YEAR 1 CHECKUP What has changed since your original feature: At the time of my original feature I had just released my book “The Bad Bytch RuleBook”. My book has now been on the market for more than one year. It was nominated for a “Rising Star” award. It was recently picked up by Barnes and Nobles as a distributor. Are there any new successes: I also opened up an extremely successful Early Education Childcare Center in my hometown. It is very beautiful 15,000 square feet, 30 employees and over 100 children attend everyday. What do you have coming up that we can look forward to: I have many new projects that I am proud to be involved in. I am in the process of opening several more small businesses. One that I am most looking forward to is a dance/exercise studio. I am also outlining a new book which will be entitled “Self-Made”. My goal is to become a self-made millionaire within the very near future. Social Media/ Contact: Twitter/Instagram: @JuiceyAdoir Booking for motivational speaking or book signings: juiceyadoir@gmail.com What is about you that embodies Ambition: I embody ambition because if I see something I want, I go and get it. No matter how hard it is, if I am focused on achieving something, I will accomplish it. I may be told “No” the first couple of times and have to adjust and strategically re-plan it, but I will achieve it.
Kourtni Hatton What has changed since your original feature: Wow! So much has changed since my original feature with Ambition Magazine. I personally, as the owner of the business participated in a program for small women owned businesses. This program was truly a breakthrough point for me and the company because I was able to become confident in the fact that I have business and not just a hobby. It also allowed me to network and create a foundation for a professional fan base and support system. Seeing others excitement and belief in a long term vision for MY business was a new motivation. For OneEleven, the social media presence has increased which has led us to an abundance of custom orders during the first quarter of the year. OneEleven also donated two custom bow ties to the 27th Annual Black Tie Ball Silent Auction, benefiting Nationwide Children’s Hospital Behavioral Health Services. It was for a great cause and we look forward to giving back any chance we get. Are there any new successes: Some of the most exciting news is that OneEleven has begun its journey into local retail stores starting with Columbus Furniture Revival located in downtown Columbus. OneEleven has also expanded its team! We have partnered with an amazing photographer with a love for bow ties and recently added a Communications Coordinator! Lastly, OneEleven’s one-of-a-kind bow ties are now available to be purchased directly from our website at www.OneElevenStyle.com! What do you have coming up that we can look forward to: We are preparing to expand to other local stores and stores out- of-state sooner than expected so stay tuned Social Media/ Contact: Instagram: @_OneEleven Twitter: @_OneEleven Website: www.OneElevenStyle.com Email: info@OneElevenStyle.com Phone: (216) 694-8018

I launched Write Chicago, an organization that helps Chicago area teenagers explore creative writing for self-expression in music, film, mass media, and more. Our focus is to support and cultivate their innate talents and interests. Are there any new successes: I’ve now written for a number of other publications including JET Magazine and served as an official blogger for The BOSS Network where I discussed business strategy and career-related topics. What do you have coming up that we can look forward to? My book, “Fly Girl Chronicles: The Road to a Flyer Self-Perception” will be coming out this summer. I’m also going to start advising and consulting on how to create awesome digital and print content, beginning this spring. Social Media/ Contact: Twitter: @arialyssa Facebook: UrbanShakeMagazine Google+: +ArionneNettles Website: ArionneAlyssa.com What is about you that embodies Ambition? I’ve grown to be very fearless about executing the ideas that God gives me. I don’t really wait anymore—I act quickly and I get it done. I think that it takes a lot of ambition to be courageous enough to go for what you want and to trust your instinct. When God puts that vision in your head, instead of spending a bunch of time worrying about how you’re going to do it and who’s going to like it, just doing it makes all the difference. If it’s within your purpose, it’s going to be successful because it’s meant to be.

Why this business/ profession: Writing has always been my passion. I started writing short stories as a little girl. When my father asked required me in addition to my regular school work to complete a book report for him once a week, I was excited to read more and of course write! There was also this burning passion to incorporate multimedia. I always knew that my calling involved being on TV. Public speaking is a skill I honed very young. In college, I studied broadcast journalism. It’s where all my passions and talents converged: writing, storytelling and public speaking. In my business, I get to write, report, host, produce, shoot video and edit. Six years ago, I created the King’s Daughters, a place for women to refine character and practice abstinence before marriage. TKD also encourages women to be honest and open about their sexuality and the real issues we encounter going all the way back to childhood. What is it about you that embodies Ambition: At the core, I’m a visionary. Daily, I’m co-creating with God. I feel his tug and his push towards my higher calling and the purpose he set out for me and I’m working in partnership with him to bring that purpose to life here on earth. Almost a year and a half ago, my husband and I made the decision in the infancy of my marriage to move 1700 miles and work full time for a news station. We knew that the experience would elevate my careers and sharpen my skills. As crazy as it seemed to some, for us it was steps of faith. We always kept the greater goal in mind. Everyday, I’m pushed to run towards my goals and the inspire others to do the same. She is the CEO and owner of Just A Journey Counseling & Psychological Services, LLC a comprehensive behavioral health agency servicing the Metro Atlanta area. She operates from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy model with a belief that people can bring about change in their lives by first changing their thoughts and beliefs. Her overall view of therapy is that the therapists’ role is to provide encouragement and to assist clients in changing their thought process and behavior to achieve a specific goal or outcome. Tranace Littlejohn By: Antoinette Dymon Tranace Littlejohn is a successful rising celebrity hairstylist and entrepreneur with a driven yet classy personality. She was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey. Although Tranace is in her early twenties, she is no newcomer to the fashion industry. Tranace’s passion for styling sparked as a young girl going to hair appointments with her mother. She always noticed the increase of confidence the women in the salon had after a new hairdo. She quickly learned that people tend to feel better when they look better. That inspired her to help people. In the third grade, Tranace begin learning hair techniques and doing her mother, cousins, and friends’ hair on a regular basis. By the time she was 14 years old, she was already working in a hair salon as a licensed cosmetologist. By 16, she snagged her first photo shoot as a model for a hair magazine working for Bennay Hair Studio. Over the next couple of years, Tranace built a strong clientele working in the salon, became an experienced hair model and gained creditable connections behind the screens. She was a featured model in various hair magazines such as Black Hair Magazine, Drum Hair Magazine, and Salon Digest as well as frequent features in Style Cue Magazine. To establish even more diversity in the industry, Tranace begin styling more behind the screens for models, celebrities and music artists for their video shoots, magazine shoots and even a couple of movie sets. Tranace realized she was living her dream and it never felt like work, it is fun and a solid income. Styling became second nature for Tranace. Although Tranace loved being a cosmetologist, she wanted to ensure multiple opportunities so upon graduation of high school she enrolled in college at William Paterson University. She felt obligated to achieve a higher education and the gritty streets of her hometown inspired her to study Criminal Justice. Growing up with the influence of her father and older brothers in the police force intrigued her curiosity with how inner city corruption plays out on both sides of the law. While earning her degree, Tranace still maintained admirable grades by balancing school work during the day and networking at industry events at night. She worked behind the scenes two years in a row for New York Fashion Week and BET Rip the Runway. She also styled for celebrities on television shows like Gossip Girl and Mob Wives, photo shoots for different websites, video sets for artists such as Jada Kiss and Corey Guns as well as networking at awards shows. In 2011, Tranace gave birth to her a handsome son she named Zion. Balancing her time effectively became even more critical. Nevertheless, she continued studying for her degree. This was a difficult time for Tranace; however, the support of her mother and grandmother really helped her maintain her responsibilities and still pursue her dreams. In 2012, Tranace accomplished another goal by earning her Bachelor of Arts. This achievement gave her great insight. She enjoyed the college experience and studying Criminal Justice but after working more thoroughly as a cosmetologist, she was even more assured that she prefers to work in the hair and fashion industries completely. Thus far, one of the highlights of her career has been networking with various influential people in the industry such as Derrick Simmons, who is a notable actor, stunt man and producer. Tranace believes that the milestones in one’s career are not always the limelight and accolades, but building relationships with strong contacts allows for longevity. She is grateful for those who appreciate the quality of her work as well as developing genuine friendships with them. From salon to set life, Tranace equally loves working in both environments. She loves the independence of traveling and the creativity she is able to bring on set; however, working in the salon keeps her grounded and updated on current trends. In five years, Tranace envisions herself opening and operating her own salon, owning her home, more established as a celebrity hairstylist, married and having another child, and paying off her student loans. On advice for working moms, “Never give up on your dream. You have to really learn patience and prioritize effectively. The reality is you’re going to have to sacrifice a lot for the needs of your child but eventually you will be able to balance a career and motherhood. My child comes first so I missed a lot of events because I couldn’t travel. I preferred to wait for him to learn to talk. I wanted him to be able to talk to me when I came home from work. You have to know your child and what works best for your child.” –Tranace LJ Fun Facts: *Advanced student so she was skipped from kindergarten to the second grade. *Loves to freestyle and create her own hairstyles *One of her favorite gifts was a manikin her mother gave her when she was 8 years old. Ms. Media Mogul in the Making Written by Antoinette Dymon Ms. Evanna Kay is a business savvy media mogul in the making hailing from Paterson, New Jersey. She carries a “go getter” attitude and an innovative style. Ms. Evanna Kay is a talented celebrity hairstylist, beauty consultant, project manager, casting director, event planner, marketing and branding consultant and owner and operator of her company, Realistic Linx. Ms. Evanna began her career at 14 years old working in a local salon as a shampoo girl. Within a year, she earned her cosmetology license. While in beauty school, Ms. Evanna fell in love with the craft. Over the next nine years, she worked as hairstylist while venturing into other opportunities. At the age of 25, she wanted a change in her career and began traveling over the bridge to New York more frequently. Soon she was offered an internship as Public Relations Representative for Drahma Magazine. This position allowed Ms. Evanna to book artists for events and opened her eyes to bigger aspirations. Within six months, she learned as much as she could about the industry and established her own company, Realistic Linx, a collection of products and services which are offered through the industries of hair, beauty, fashion and entertainment. Ms. Evanna’s career begin to skyrocket; she built alliances with networks B.E.T., VH1, Rhymes & Dimes Magazine, and Harlem Women’s Commerce of Chamber, to name a few. On and off camera, Ms. Evanna has accumulated an extensive workload in media. She has hosted media coverage for popular celebrities; for instance Jay-Z on his video shoot for “Picasso Baby”, VH1’s Love and Hip Hop, Mob Wives and Black Ink Crew, Rhymes & Dimes Magazine, Bravo TV’s series premier of Chef Roblè’s show, and with long-time civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton. She has held interviews with other music artists such as Coko, Mya, Jadakiss, and Sean Garret, and television personalities such as Meeka Claxton, Erica Mena, and Terrence J. As host of Realistic Linx “Networking Talk Show”, she gave celebrities from all walks of media an opportunity to enlighten viewers about their career endeavors. Realistic Linx is a fresh and unique growing empire that reaches to promote, not only the well-known artists or celebrities, but the people who assist them, such as hairstylists, models, fashion stylists, DJs, CEOs, and the likes. Ms. Evanna wholeheartedly believes in all of the crew members on set and reaches to support everyone in their own personal journeys. Some of the people featured on her talk show are movie and video director, J Jesses, the legendary DJ Spinderella of Salt N Pepa, NFL Super Bowl champ, Brian Witherspoon and Bad Boy engineer Jermaine. Behind the scenes, she has conducted casting calls for multiple shoots ranging from the Spider Man 2 movie to Maino ft Waka Flocka’s “We Mobbin” video shoot. Still remaining true to her first love, hairstyling, Ms. Evanna Kay wore the hat of beauty consultant on set for countless events and celebrities such as VH1’s Love and Hip Hop, B.E.T.’s 106 and Park, Ocean Style Magazine, and for cover models Sheneka Adams, Jazzibelle, and Ms. Cat of Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club. Ms. Evanna has also carried the hat of event planner for multiple occasions such as La Femme Forte, Women’s & Mother’s day event sponsored by Carol’s Daughter, Industry Fridays HK, and Rhymes & Dimes Magazine’s press release events. Ms. Evanna believes that balance is an ongoing learning experience. It is important to Ms. Evanna that she is involved in every aspect of her business. Life is ever-changing so she completes work based on one priority at the time. She has overcome trials along the way and knows that her determination and staying true to herself has driven her to success. One of the biggest lessons for her has been misconduct of contracts and agreements. The industry can be very political and unfair; however, Ms. Evanna Kay has always maintained integrity as a business owner and values the same from those that she works with. Although she has not always received that in return, she focuses on her lane and continues to strengthen her talents, taking risks and learning new skills. To build greater success, Ms. Evanna believes in learning from the mistakes of self and others. Realistic Linx has ‘evolved into an educational and networking platform to help pursue the development of entrepreneurial skill sets that are essential for the expansion of and within the entertainment industry’. Ms. Evanna Kay is currently working on venturing into e-commerce and developing her online boutique and local hair salon. Her goal is to achieve more work behind the scenes on movie sets. She envisions herself traveling overseas not only to vacation but to network for future projects and help others. She aspires to be a philanthropist and give back to those in her neighborhood as well as nationally and internationally. Self-proclaimed “E of all Trades” is a dynamic business woman merged with her classy exterior, compelling resume and determination is definitely a force to reckoned with. On advice for rising entrepreneurs: “My advice to upcoming entrepreneurs is to know your craft and have great knowledge of behind the scenes and agreements that you make. There is a movement going and it has some people confused. That movement is the creation of The Single Wives Club by founder and president, Koereyelle Dubose. The term Single Wife alone is throwing people off and getting some dirty looks because people don’t know quite what to think of it. That’s when you say shut up, read and listen. The purpose of The Single Wives Club is to prepare single women for marriage. Being a wife is not something that you just wake up one day and are great at executing. It takes some work and some of the work that goes into being a wife comes before you even meet Hubby. Small things such as learning how to cook, learning how to take care of a man and take care of yourself, working on you before trying to become a we or an us are all things that can be learned and practiced before entering a marriage. I caught wind of this movement early last year and was immediately drawn in. I am what I call a modern traditionalist, meaning that I have a lot of very ambitious goals but I also believe in taking care of my home. Cooking and tending to my man. So I instantly identified with being a single wife. While Koereyelle is not in a formal classroom anymore ,she is still standing true to her teaching background with the organization. Researching and guiding her members to the right resources. You can’t force a person to take in knowledge all you can do is put it in front of them. Thus far Koereylle has done a commendable job of not only leading her members to the dating game but also giving them the resources to comfortably enter the playing field. Koereyelle, has taken goal setting, personal development, networking and dating and created a whole new world for her members. together and help one another reach the next level. The Single Wives participate in a variety of activities ranging from social media based challenges to participating in a book club and organized chats with the Wives Society. While there are definitely some additional advantages to being a local member, all members get to communicate with one another. She is an entrepreneur. Koereyelle, who by began her career as a teacher, fell into entrepreneurship and from my view, it has been a great move. Entrepreneurship can be physically, mentally and financially straining in it’s first year when you are passionate about what you are doing. If you are not passionate about it, you probably shouldn’t be doing it. “Believe in what you have going on! Whatever it is you have to believe in it, if you are not willing to fight for it tooth and nail you are not supposed to be doing it”. -Koereylle When talking to Koereyelle, it is interesting listening to her struggles, goals and accomplishments with The Single Wives Club. When talking about struggles it seems as though understanding from others has been the biggest issue. Sharing how people including some of her mentors have suggested changing the name of the organization because it appeared controversial and people didn’t quite know how to take it. But she had a vision and stuck to her guns and here we are today. The organization began after Koereyelle broke off an engagement of her own, which as she looks back now she jokingly expresses how she could have ever thought that this was the one for her. So in 2011 after ending the relationship she began doing some personal development, focusing on her health and learning to cook, things of that nature. As she was diving into this world she began including her friends and they began doing potlucks in her home. The cool thing about it was that not only did you bring your dish, you also brought the recipe to be shared with everyone and help everyone increase their cooking repertoire. As they began to post pictures on social media more and more people wanted to become involved and from those beginnings The Single Wives Club was formed. This year, 2014, is definitely set to be a great year for Koereyelle and her organization. She and her team have already created a positive road for single women to communicate, learn and gain the needed resources. One of the best resources outside of the camaraderie is the Wives’ Society! Actual wives who are working to help those aspiring to that lifestyle to understand the reality of married life. Some of us are viewing marriage as a fairy tale and forgetting that it takes work and that it is a responsibility to be a wife. She is Koereyelle. “Since starting The Single Wives Club dating has changed. I know what I am supposed to be doing from listening to my mentors and preparing the information for all of the members so I put a lot of pressure on myself. Then the topic of the organization always comes up because it is what I do so it can be difficult. Then all of these men think I am supposed to be they wife and that is just not true”. Make sure you keep your eyes open for everything that this woman is doing and don’t make the mistake of boxing her in, cause she’s just getting warmed up! We wish Koereylle the best of luck in 2014 and we encourage those of you who are single ladies to check out The Single Wives Club and equip yourselves with the resources that they have to offer and to those gentlemen out there looking for a wife, these might be the women you want to watch out for. If nothing else you know that they are putting forth the effort to better themselves so that they can be GREAT to and for you! Combining A Dream
and a Lifestyle Arab-American Designer, Lubna Najjar, has been making noise from coast to coast, with the honor of showing in New York and Columbus Fashion weeks in 2013. 2014 will be a far from disappointing year as she will be showing in New York Fashion Week, Columbus Fashion Week, and adding Miami Fashion Week to the list. Lubna is what she calls, “a clash of human being”, in combining the tradition and conservative roots of being Arab with the Western Society, American lifestyle. In developing Lubna Designs, which falls under Lubna Designs Inc., she was able to see the merging of her two sides coming out through her designs. She has always designed and sketched as a hobby with no formal training. The most training that she has was with a seamstress. Having somewhat of an internal battle on whether she should take designing further and whether others would take her seriously, she decided that should at least give it a try. Lubna was blessed with a husband who saw the passion in her hobby and encouraged her to pursue something more and he built a studio in their home for her to work and accept clients and build upon her gift. The in-home studio has served her well for the past year plus but as she grows, the brand must grow and allow her to accept and see people outside of her home. The home studio has been great for people that she knows but as more people find her through google and social media there is a need to expand. This year she is focusing on branding and expanding her name and that is where iL Moda (“the fashion” in Arabic) comes in. Lubna is now building her very own showroom in Columbus, OH, iL Moda. iL Moda will provide the Columbus environment, which is currently #3 in fashion with a true New York fashion experience. Lubna creations with be housed in the showroom, and Lubna will be inviting larger retailers to come in and show their collections. iL Moda Showroom will also include a beauty bar that will feature Faith Nicole, MUA. The goal Lubna has for iL Moda is to make it a destination by making it appointment only. Giving her clients a personalized experience. Think about it… what could be better than being able to go and sit down for a custom fitting with one of Columbus’ hottest designers and have your makeup done by one of Columbus’ hottest MUAs. Let me tell you, just the thought of it has me trying to create an event to go to. I am excited for all the things to come for Lubna and especially getting the chance to share it all with you! Stay tuned for a web exclusive. BRINGING HISTORY INTO OUR LIVES THROUGH THE YOUTH
E
Eunique Gibson-Jones, DC resident, began to shake up Black History Month last year with her campaign, Because of Them We Can, posting creative graphics of some of our favorite and most well-known Black pioneers. Using children to portray some of the most memorable and influential people in black history, such as, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Bill Cosby, Bob Marley and Spike Lee, to name a few.
I was so excited to get a chance to speak with Eunique and find out a little more about her and the Because of Them We Can campaign. At this point it is much more than a campaign it is a movement that is benefiting not only our youth but adults as well. Growing up we all had those people who we identified with or that we learned more about than others. Like how many of you reading this can say that you have never written a report on Dr. Martin Luther King? I’ll wait… The point is, there are so many great people in history, not just black history that if you don’t have a love for history and reading you will never hear about. Eunique, who is a wife and mother of two sons Chase and Amari, was inspired to create Because of Them We Can by her sons.
“In thinking about the opportunities that have been made for them because of all the progress that have been made by blacks past and present. During this time when so many negative sound bites are out there”. Eunique Jones-Gibson
BECAUSE OF THEM, WE CAN
When talking to Eunique I asked her who she was just as a person and this is what she told me ‘… I am passionate about building the self-esteem of others, and inspiring people to follow their dreams, a perfectionist, someone who believes in pushing the envelope and pushing the glass ceiling to shatter it’! From that explanation of self it is easy to see who she could create something as powerful as this movement. While it began with Black/ African American notable figures, Eunique expresses that one of the things we can watch for in the months to come is the introduction of other historical figures of all races and nationalities. One of the biggest curiosities was if she knew it was going to become what it is today, leading her to leave her job in order to pursue and keep up with the pace of Because of Them We Can. She says no, she knew it would be great but never to this extent. She wasn’t aware that she was filling a void in our communities. With the 2014 year she has multiple things up her sleeve for growth but as with all good things we must wait but she has to leave us waiting for something. In the immediate she wants it to be scaled and wants everyone to be touched by Because of Them We Can and integrate it more significantly into our society. Already having produced a calendar, shirts, photographs and a coffee table book, I can only imagine what else she comes up with but I am definitely anxiously awaiting. Follow Eunique and watch Because of Them We Can grow on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/becauseofthemwecan) and Instagram (@becauseofthem), you can also watch things unfold on their website, http://www. becauseofthemwecan.com/. C Cleveland native, Faith (Redd) Walker has been turning heads in a great way for the past couple of years. In last year’s anniversary issue we featured Faith as she was working on building her business as an esthetician and the launch of her make up line. Since last March she has just been on the move.

LOVE
Faith wears what seems to be a million hats as daughter, sister, mother to two beautiful young ladies and a military wife. For some, holding those titles would be a large enough feat but Faith decided to add entrepreneur to that list in 2012 and then in 2013 she added published Author to that list. When Faith began her journey of entrepreneurship it began with her studio and makeup line FYB, Faithfully Yours Beauty. That grew into her switching gears to focusing on her work as a Make Up Artist and that is when Faith Nicole was born. It seems as though the moment she made the decision to truly focus on being a makeup artist things just took off. Booking weddings, photo shoots, even getting the opportunity to participate in both the Columbus Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week and being about to do make up for a local television station, Hola Columbus. December 5, 2013 as the first of many winter storms rolled into Ohio, Faith was in a cozy downtown Columbus lounge launching her new book Love, Beauty! What is Love, Beauty about?
“What is Love, Beauty? It’s my story! It’s about my journey to find true beauty–and myself–in a world full of conflicting messages and circumstances. This is more than just a beauty book; it’s a story of survival and empowerment.”
BEAUTY
That is a difficult question to answer because Love, Beauty covers so many different aspects of life. When you read through the pages of this quick read you will find women’s empowerment, beauty tips, recipes and a look into Faith’s life. There is truly something for everyone in this book. Having the pleasure of watching Faith work on this book and seeing the days/ weeks of writer’s block and then see the excitement and nervousness encompass her once the book was finished does create a level of bias. Anyone that writes a book has accomplished something great. Watching someone create their masterpiece, especially when they are including pieces of their personal life. It’s easy to talk about accolades and happy moments in life but Faith allows you into some of the darker moments of her life that helped to mold her into the powerful, beautiful, successful women that she is today. You can purchase Love, Beauty on Amazon, you can book Faith Nicole at FaithNicoleMUA.com or Fybeauty.com. Follow Faith on Instagram at @fybeauty.

friend says ‘Man fck this fat sh*t’. **The other funny part of this story is that she says this friend wasn’t even fat.** Za agreed, ‘yeah man, fck this fat sh*t’! She says from there the name was pretty much created.
#FckBeingFat is the hashtag that has Instagram blowing up but it is much more than just a hashtag, it is the fitness challenge that is helping people to lose internationally drop those unwanted pounds. When people hear the words Fck Being Fat, some clutch their pearls while others are running the streets like ‘yea fck being fat’. Either way the challenge is changing lives. Zakia Blain (Za), mother of two and teacher by trade, in just over a year has created a challenge that truly promotes a lifestyle change and she provides you with the tools to succeed for the cost of what some spend on fast food in the course of one week. The reality of weight loss is that until you individually are committed to a lifestyle change, there will be no consistency. This whole movement started with Za’s personal journey. One of the funniest things about this journey is how the name , Fck Being Fat was created. One lunch break during the beginning of her journey, she was walking with a friend. While walking and trying to get right, her

Why does this challenge work? This challenge works because it focuses on everyday life and it was created based off of what Za was doing in her own life to become healthy. This isn’t a biggest loser competition! The expectation is absolutely to lose weight and lose inches but you are not living in this unrealistic bubble for 8 weeks in seemingly perfect conditions. You are living your normal life and trying to make a change to save your life and Za provides the best tools that she can to help you with that. There are no supplements that are promoted just moderation and activity. Sounds simple, huh? Not quite! You have to be ready and understand this isn’t a diet so she isn’t going to tell you that you can’t have something or that you must do something in order to participate. You simply have to make a commitment to yourself and learn to make changes in your life even when the rest of your family and friends aren’t. Eat clean, exercise, drink water and develop a support system… if only it was as easy to execute as it is to type. With a following of well over 20k on Instagram , there is this relatability that you get with Zakia even without meeting her. It could be the realness of her instavids or the personal look you get into her life with her vlog that she is doing with two of her participants that shows the good days and the bad days. The good and bad thing about the social media is the expectation that people place on you. Za makes it no mystery that she is not a fitness professional, she is a woman who

started a journey and has had success with her journey. She now wants to use her successes and her failures to create a program that can help others achieve what she has. Yet people are constantly criticizing the most basic things and holding her to the most ridiculous standard fitness perfection. I don’t know about you but I don’t really want the trainer who has always been fit and never had to overcome issues with eating properly and being motivated to exercise. I can’t relate! So it’s funny to see people go nuts when she is eating Chick-fil-a or when they are attempting to critique how a whole meal is cooked through one snapshot, I know they say a picture is worth a thousand words but some of those people should probably shut up. What I enjoy even more is how she silences them. What’s next for Zakia? Growing the Fck Being Fat Fitness Brand and making it a full service fitness empire. She has already begin making strides with this by creating 2 programs outside of the original program that provides more attention and resources to help those who are at different places in their journey. Many people return after their first challenge because they have seen success with their personal journey and the support that
you receive is hard to come by in other arenas. She is also going to be bringing some more focus to her other business, Brown Girls Building Brands, which is a networking group that helps share and provide resources for entrepreneurial and professional women. I am excited to see where this goes and will definitely be participating and supporting. We need a better understanding of networking and how to build and create brands. There are people with great ideas and just don’t know what direction to move. Stay tuned for more about Zakia and Fck Being Fat in our Fitness issue. Chaquis Maliq…. Poet, Musician, Independent Artist, Business Woman. Chaquis is a talented young woman, currently residing on the east coast. Chaquis started out as a poet and used that love and those skills to develop her career as an R&B artist. Coming from a musically inclined family the ability and the resources were always at her fingertips. As an adolescent she played the piano and the drums but when she began her music career she did play any instruments. Her reasons for not playing an instrument in the beginning are very valid. She wanted to come into the industry and create her own path and not constantly be compared to current well-known names such as India Arie. She was accompanied by a band in the beginning and it wasn’t until her band separated that she picked up the guitar. Ironically, there were efforts to get Chaquis to play the guitar when she was in high school and she wasn’t interested. So it shows how things come full circle as she now plays the guitar. Already having a musical background, picking up the guitar was not extremely difficult. The one problem that Chaquis had as a child was that she didn’t like to play others people’s music. From talking to her she is definitely a person who learns her music from hearing it which leads us into how she learned to play the guitar. She just played! She attempted lessons and all sorts of things but what worked best for her was to just play. Transitioning from poetry to singing was not a difficult process for her either. The poetry, that she still does, provided the skills to write the music and a lot of people thought she had the voice for singing so she went for. She was never one of those people that just walked around the house singing. When she made the move to the East Coast is when she really began to get started with the music, starting out with ghost writing for other R&B artist. This was good for her because it gave her the ability to perfect her craft and develop her skills. The most inspiring thing about Chaquis when talking to her is her free spirit. When listening to Chaquis you feel this free/ healing spirit within her music. She is not a promoter of the bashing through music. She has a message to spread love through her music and connecting with people through her music. Ultimately every song is a story and she is very cognizant of what her music is doing to her listeners and that’s to be a positive reflection. She is not tied down by what other people do and has no desire to be a star. “I don’t want to be a star because eventually stars fall out of the sky and I don’t want to fall” In addition to her promoting her music, she performed at a sex trafficking awareness event which she wrote a song in honor of one of the survivors that she will be releasing as a single. She is also releasing a fragrance this month (March). We are looking forward to some great things coming from Chaquis and look out for the web exclusive coming this summer to learn more about Chaquis! chaquismaliq.com chaquismaliq.tumblr.com chaquismaliq.bandcamp.com twitter.com/chaquismaliq instagram.com/chaquismaliq youtube.com/chaquismaliq facebook.com/chaquismaliqmusic soundcloud.com/chaquismaliqmusic

Recently Beyoncé dropped her self- titled album out of the Blue. No promotion, no marketing, just a release. Who does she think she is to, one, secretly record and film a whole album with videos to match, two, break the iTunes download record with over 600,000 in 3 days (take that Taylor Swift) and three, make it seem easy. Beyoncé broke all the rules of a good marketing campaign by not marketing at all. Beyoncé has become a brand. A trusted name and dependable go to source for everything music, dance, fashion, fragrance, love, sex and maybe even parenting. Her ambition is nearly unmatched these days. There is a “bonus” video included on the self -titled album, Grown Woman. The video showcases the evolution of Beyoncé’s diva-ism from old home video clips to current times. The cinematography, produced by Jake Nava of Believe Media, is clever, as the images portrayed provide glimpses of her development and accomplishments and… well… growth. I recently started a new job and on my morning commute I made sure that my playlist was full of inspiration. The Beyoncé song, Grown Woman, easily became a daily source of uplift in the car to prepare me for the day. As usual, I was especially touched by the careful compilation of musical and lyrical persuasion by one of the most trailblazing artist of my generation. Whether it was passing someone to the left, getting ready to go out, I like to party, or even coping with the loss of someone who was here, I practically have a Beyoncé song for many of my life moments that I can play to empower me. (I’m sure you can relate.) The more and more I
ness Grown OF
BY: Amber Jones
listened to Grown Woman, every morning for at least 2 months, the more it resonated with how I consider myself grown, and because I’m a critical thinker, it soon became a deep self reflection avenue for me. What was Beyoncé conditioning me think? What does “grown” really mean? Am I really grown? How do I measure my “grown-ness”. If it was by Beyoncé approved standards it may be classified by having the ability to do whatever I want, and knowing the road, knowing where I’m going, without Google maps or maybe using my phat assets to seemingly get whatever I want. Putting it down, moving it round and not looking back. Ironically, I determined that my definition of Grown was much different from The Yoncé’s. Although Beyoncé brings up a great point of the power of free will, which God grants us all, she seems to leave out the repercussions of the power of choices and the responsibility it requires. But maybe that is addressed in the next bonus release. This is an even more crucial issue for humans of womanly decent. Earlier this year Beyoncé released a statement on The Shriver Report titled, Gender Equality is a Myth. While there are conflicting opinions on whether Bey can be classified as a feminist, I would moderately defend that she is an advocate for women and sometimes works her platform to speak out. Although I’m not sure how many actually took notice of the statement, the visual and musical statements that Bey portrays has surely been one of strong womanly confidence through sexuality, image, and entrepreneurship. And while I wish we all had the option to do whatever we wanted, truth is, that’s not always a viable option, and especially for women.
While the Grown Woman video seems to imitate grown-ness as getting older, physical development and showcase. For regular people it is much more than that. Ironically my definition of grown was much different from The Yoncé’s. Growth is ambiguous. Which means we must define that for ourselves. Growth is continuous, and contagious. It is getting bigger in size and spirit. It is critical but not always consistent. It is adaptive and adverse. It is all these things and more! While Beyoncé’s grown-ness is determined and exerted by doing whatever she wants, leading many to freedom exerted Harriett Tubman’s. Barbara Jordan’s grown-ness was exerted by being politically involved and leading civil rights activities. Hillary Clintons was by being an international leader and advocate at one of the highest levels possible. What will it be for you? Our women and girls are in dyer need of support and insight to survive, and survival is key. Nearly 1 in 5 women on college campuses are sexually assaulted. In a recent address at President Obama called such acts “totally unacceptable”. In Ohio nearly 20% of students are not graduating from high school, in 2014 there are still a good number of 1ststudents, and I’d still guess that women are paid less than their male counterparts. (jaw drops) Nationwide we have become much more selfish and self centered then ever. It is still our responsibility to help and hold up each other. On our journeyto grown, let us not forget the responsibility we have as people, as women, as mothers, as sisters, as daughters, as friends to the greater good of this world. We must pay it forward to those we owe the future; let’s give them a bonus. Your bonus contribution is unique to you, but leaving your positive mark is needed more than ever, and I would consider that the grownness thing ever. A M B I T I O N M AG . O RG

We are coming off of one of the biggest holidays ever. Nope I am not talking about Thanksgiving, not even Christmas, but Valentine’s Day. February is the month of all things love. Americans spend on average between $13 - $14 billion every year on Valentine’s Day gifts alone. So much energy, time and money goes into people planning out what to do and or buy for their significant others. Most of the time you find that it is the men who are exhausting these valuable resources to show their love and affection towards a woman. I remember growing up always anticipating what my boyfriend at the time was going to get me. As I’ve gotten older I found that any other day is just as good as Valentine’s Day to tell my loved ones how much I care about them. I have also discovered that being a wife, mother and business woman I needed to also do the same thing for myself…Love me!
March is National Women’s Month and what a more appropriate time than this to focus and celebrate you, the natural, beautiful, powerful, intelligent being that you are. WOMAN!! Now I’m not talking about going on shopping sprees and getting mani - pedis and makeovers. Well, let’s save those for last… Right now I’m talking about celebrating your life at this moment and being grateful for who and where you are. We can honor ourselves by taking care of ourselves, physically, emotionally and mentally. Our bodies need the essentials to function at is best: food, water and adequate rest are key. Emotionally we need to feel loved, desired, appreciated and respected. Mentally we need balance, peace, and clarity. Our roles as women can become so overwhelming at times as we attempt to effectively master the art of “juggling!” In the midst of this circus act called life we find ourselves, tired, unfulfilled and unhappy because we have not learned that we must take care of ourselves. One of the first rules you learn when riding an airplane is that you must first put the oxygen mask on yourself before assisting anyone else. This lesson holds true off the airplane as well. What good are you to your husband, your children and or your boss if you’ve passed out due to lack of oxygen? Make yourself a priority this month. Make a commitment to improve your physical, emotional and mental health. Additionally, spoil yourself! Treat yourself to that shopping spree, visit the nail salon and schedule a makeover. Encourage you girlfriends, mothers and sisters to do the same. Remember you cannot pour out of an empty cup! Pour into yourself so that you can pour into others! Until next time!

BROTHERS
P
KEEPER
resident Barack Obama has recently launched an initiative entitled My Brothers Keeper. So what do we think of this initiative? When it comes to education, young men of color have been falling behind as society continues to stagnate socio-economic progress in these communities with lack of opportunity and education. This initiative focuses to break down “… disproportionate challenges and obstacles to success,” (The White House Blog, February 27, 2014). This task force has been charged with a mighty feat of locating the issues impacting young men of color, seeking out what’s working in different communities and most importantly, searching for ways to improve policy as to not inhibit the growth and development of these young men. This initiative is one which will take a tremendous amount of time to see clearly the fruits of its labor. But again, what does this initiative truly mean? While I will admit I am extremely excited about this initiative and the attention our Black and Brown young men are receiving because of it I cannot help but wonder what will come of this. Our young men’s potential is overshadowed with an educational system bound in local and neighborhood schools failing to meet the needs of its students. Our system is in an era where the teacher is no longer a respected profession, but one which an alternative certification can be achieved. And I do realize in this age our society wants everything right now, quick, fast and in a hurry… even our degrees. Where will the educational investment come from? How will years and years of oppression and self-hatred begin to be stripped away from people to have equity and equality in education? These are just some of my initial reactions to this initiative. And while I am thankful for this initiative and the President of the United States letting everyone knowhe sees there’s an issue in our accountability for one another, etc. we will have to do things on our own. It is up to us in our communities to be proactive and see that our young men of color are educated. “We cannot be educated if we can’t read and if we can’t read it’s because no one taught us.”-Anonymous Dr. Candice Dawson

The Fashion
A
CENTURY OF
FASHION
“So many things can happen in a century. The last 100 years of fashion has taken us on a rollercoaster of styles, genres and designers.” I guess the best place to start would be with the Queen of style herself, “Coco” Chanel. In 1913, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, founded Chanel. This timeless brand has come to be the epitome of fashion for many decades. The ‘Double C’ logo is recognized worldwide by young and old as a sign of class and opulence. From the wool jersey Chanel suit to her iconic signature parfum scent Chanel No. 5; this Parisian powerhouse surely set the fashion world on FIRE! The “Roaring 20’s” chartered remarkable changes to the world of style, during this time the “Flapper” was born. Colorful fabrics and knee length hemlines took a front seat on the fashion scene.

Shoes and stockings became flashier now that they were more noticeable with the shorter dresses. Women became more audacious with their opera, theatre, dinner and cocktail length cigarette holders, cocktail drinking and dancing. In the 1920’s, women were becoming more free to be themselves. Who would’ve known that a cute little alligator would become a world renowned fashion phenomenon? Tennis star Rene Lacoste, also known as “le Crocodile” was just looking to make a simple tennis shirt. Since 1933, the embroidered reptile has transcended the modest collared tennis shirt that it began with. The Lacoste brand now houses not only fashion for
which is designed to fit close but not tight. Balenciaga was the architect of the new silhouette for women; one that brought attention to the detail(s) of the clothing and not just the shape of the body. One of his clients said it best in their description of his work, “Women did not have to be perfect or even beautiful to wear his clothes. His clothes made them beautiful.”
men but also for women, kids, shoes and accessories. A long way from that cute French designed polo shirt with the alligator huh?
n the 1960’s and 70’s fashion and music were partners in crime. Designers like Halston took over the U.S disco scene while the rock influenced
The Second World War brought a halt to many Parisian couture houses. But in the late 1940’s, after the craziness of the war, Christian Dior restored the French fashion scene! With his focus on femininity, he set his fashion house apart from the times of austerity. Dior celebrated the hour glass shape of the woman with his designs. His pieces are highly recognizable for their affluent fabrics and elaborate designs. From the top of the pyramid of Hollywood royalty to the everyday woman who loves fashion, Dior is a household name. Not everything in fashion was labored in France. In the 1950’s, the world was introduced to the Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga. He was the originator “semi-fit,”

The Fashion
“Mod” era swept across London, making it one of the fashion capitals of the world. One of the most famous pieces that Halston is known for is the ‘pill box’ hat that he designed for the First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Jump started by Supermodel Twiggy, Mod was full of fun, bright colors and freedom of expression. Bright colors and fun carried over into the 1980’s. Along with the cool clothes came the exaggerated makeup. Dresses and sneakers were a hit and even those who weren’t dancers wore legwarmers. The oversized, slouchy, off the one shoulder sweatshirt was made popular by Jennifer Beal in Flashdance. One of the freest spirits known to mankind hit the scene in the 80’s, Madonna burst onto the fashion and music scene like an atomic bomb; making herself the poster child for some of the most memorable moments in 80’s style. From tutus to teased hair, the 80’s was definitely a time to remember. The 1990’s boasted some crazy styles as well. With extreme designers like Alexander McQueen hit-

ting the fashion scene in the 90’s, there were surely some innovative looks. A huge designer of the 90’s era was Gianni Versace from Italy. The Versace brand includes: Atelier Versace, Versace Couture, Versace Sports, Versace Home Collection, Versace Jeans Couture, Versace Collection, Young Versace, and Versus. Even though his tenure in fashion was dramatically cut short, the excitement in his house of fashion design lives on! Another huge trend in the 90’s was baggy street wear. Designers like Tommy Hilfiger capitalized off of
this phenomenon. Oversized shirts and pants were the thing to be seen in; this trend crossed gender lines too and included women. This was also the time when Hip Hop started to have a serious influence on fashion. Urban wear like RocaWear, Sean John and FUBU hit the scene. No longer were they only artists’, they became multidimensional which officially included them fashion world as not only consumers but now as designers. The 2000’s has been an eclectic mix of all fashion styles and genres. Designers like Kimora Lee Simmons burst on the scene with Baby Phat and brought back that fitted feminine vibe to the ladies’ wardrobe. Starting out with just baby tees, the brand is now a worldwide fashion empire. Fashion in the 2000 era has been nothing short of an interesting mix of new trends with classic twists from previous decades. Unlike their predecessors, new designers these days have so many different avenues for gaining both knowledge of the industry and exposure for their work. They have the luxury of having their work reach the masses with just the simple click of a button. You never know what you’re going to see on the runway these days but one thing you do know is that it WILL be fabulous! This was just a short walk down memory lane in the past 100 years of fashion. I am excited to see what the fashion world has to offer us in the future. But one thing’s
for sure we wouldn’t know where to go if we didn’t know where we came from. Until next time, STAY AMBITIOUS! Written by: Simon’e Lightfoot the Fashion Wordsmith for http://www.myn8style.wordpress.com

ENJOY
In the course of the past 2 years, I have provided you with now 10 steps that you should (keyword: should) follow on your entrepreneurship journey. We have covered everything from having the dream and wanting to monetize it to our final step, enjoying what you have created. I am willing to bet that I am getting two consistent reactions from the final step! One: Why didn’t you say this earlier? Two: As soon as I can find the time I will. I have something for both. Enjoy is the last step because a lot goes into truly being able to enjoy the entrepreneur/ self-employed life. Sometimes, in the beginning, I did a little too much enjoying. Not having to punch a time clock, having no one to answer to and at times making in a week or less what I had previously made in the course of a month. Let’s just say the freedom was nice and some not so great habits began to form quickly. Once I developed better habits I still had fun but I was also more productive. Put the work in early so you can have the systems and people in place so that if you go on a week vacation or you get sick that your business is not only still standing but running appropriately in your absence. To respond to the other thought…. Right now you are in the growth phase of your business where you have a serious case of tunnel vision. You’re focus is unmatched and you are driven purely by success, goals and metrics. To you, I say always have the ability to accept a win. In this phase it can be difficult because your event may not have brought in the amount of money that you wanted but people showed up. You may have wanted to sell out of everything but you only sold out of one product. Think about it, there are people who have events and no one shows up and the people who do show up don’t buy anything. There is always potential that something could have went better but regardless there was a level of success achieved and you always need to acknowledge and celebrate that.

CLIMBING THE CORPORAT
B Be dainty. Be polite. Be a lady. They’re among the most common lessons taught to young girls by well-meaning parents. But when that little girl becomes a woman in the workplace, they can really limit her potential to get ahead. Men are often taught as boys to be fearless, competitive and tough - ready to hide their feelings and put themselves first. While girls are told to behave themselves, be modest, and be aware of the needs of others. It’s that distinction that’s ultimately responsible for the inequality of the modern workplace. Women who want to get ahead must break that cycle and lose what the ‘nice girl image’ and be assertive. To basically unlearn the lessons of childhood. This doesn’t mean you walk all over everyone else to get what you want. The workplace is somewhat of a game. You have to play to win and to do that properly you need to understand the rules. Men tend to exaggerate their accomplishments more than women do, and thus they gain an edge when competing for corporate positions. That doesn’t mean men lie during job interviews or performance

reviews, but it does mean they exhibit a lot more confidence in workplace situations. They’re not afraid to sing their own praises. Women tend to underestimate the accomplishments they do have. To match the success men can have in the business world, women need to be comfortable with talking about their achievements. Clearly, we females need to take a page from the male playbook and make sure that we’re getting the recognition and credit we’ve earned.
The way you look and talk matters. This has nothing to do with your vast vocabulary and fashion sense. Your attire and speaking skills affect how others perceive you, and it’s nothing personal.

Where in the world are your manners? Didn’t anybody ever teach you ladies first? If they didn’t then I’m here to put this important info in your ear. We are always first. Why, you may ask. Probably because we are the only one’s in the human race that can give birth. So open the door, and let us in! That means we enter, and then you follow. How about every word we speak you swallow. Not meaning to be a little dry, but baby nothing about this lady is shy. I am always a lady first, and then I’m everything else. Let me do you a favor, and let you know that a lady adores a man with a true meaning. One that handles his responsibilities, and doesn’t hesitate to get on his providing knees. Please Believe! Once you start putting your lady first you will soon recognize her value. And a note to my beautiful ladies: Please keep in touch with yourself, and remember your self worth. Honor yourself and your choices. When a real man notice you even he will know that you come first, and you will not have to tell him that you are:
A LADY FIRST. - Shaderia Sneed
