ew Orleans - REEL IDENTITIES is proud to announce its exciting lineup for New Orleans fourth lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender film festival. The full film schedule can be viewed at http:// reelidentities.org/2007/schedule/. After a festival that exceeded expectations in 2005, Reel Identities went on hiatus in 2006 due to Hurricane Katrina, and instead held individual screenings and curated the film portion of the DecaFest gay arts festival in August. Three days of programming will be held in the space used by Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center at Tulane University's School of Architecture, Richardson Memorial Building, second floor. Opening night features include A Four-Letter Word, a romantic comedy by director Casper Andreas in which main character Luke ultimately realizes that being true to one's self may be the best way to deal with the many complications of a four-letter word called love. Also on opening night will be Itty Bitty Titty Committee, a new comedy by Jamie Babbit, who directed But I'm a Cheerleader. In Itty Bitty, Anna, who lives at home and works in a plastic surgeon's office, falls in with a haphazard group of dyke activists in a classic girl-becomeswoman tale. Daniela Sea (the L Word), Jenny Shimizu and Guinivere Turner star. The festival will offer nine two-hour programs over the three-day weekend. Tickets will be $7.50 per screening, with a discount pass for five screenings available for $30, and an all-access festival pass available for $50. (Passes must be presented at the box office for tickets for individual screenings and do not guarantee admission, which is on a first-come, first-serve basis.) Tickets and passes will be available at the door for cash only. Box office opens an hour before first program of each day. Tickets and passes are also available on the website until 11:59pm the night preceding a program. Using the event ticketing service EventBrite, filmgoers can charge advance tickets via the Paypal electronic payment system. Tickets purchased on-line will be available for pick-up at Will Call at the venue the night of the program. Passes purchased on-line will be available for pick-up at Will Call for the duration of the Festival . There will be no refund for unused portions of either Festival Pass. For tickets, visit: http:/ /reelidentities.org/2007/tickets/. Presented by the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of New Orleans, Reel Identities is sponsored by Zeitgeist MultiDisciplinary Arts Center, Here! televsion, and Ariel Montage, and is supported in part by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, administered by the Arts Council of New Orleans.

the "official" dish ...from Main-4 Katrina schedule. Despite a petition with over 1,100 signatures, numerous meetings with public officials, an intense media campaign and a City Resolutionauthored by Councilmen Arnie Fielkow and James Carter-the hours were not restored until Rep. Jeff Arnold initiated a bill which resulted in amending the legislative budget to include funds for reinstating this historic transportation link across the city. Ferry Night is a celebration of this latest rebuilding block for New Orleans. It is about Algerines who can again cross the river for a night in the French Quarter. It’s about French Quarter & CBD restaurateurs who desperately need their patronage. It’s about late-shift hospitality workers who can now find housing on the more affordable West Bank. It’s about restoring property values, keeping drunk drivers off the bridge, promoting self-propelling transportation alternatives like strolling and bicycling. It’s about embracing this most delightful form of public transportation—and in doing so, reducing our city’s carbon footprint. Ferry Night is one big “Open House” -where a river runs through it. Please join this historic event. Schedule of events include: 5pm - Meet at the Canal St. Ferry Landing for the Second Line along the Moonwalk; 5:45pm - Take the Ferry to the Algiers Point Landing for the 6pm - City Proclamation, Blessing of the Ferry & complimentary “Pink Ferrytinis”; 6:30pm - Second Line along the levee to the Costume Contest @ Warren’s Corner (across from The Old Point Bar) where SOMEONE WILL BE CROWNED 2007’s “Algiers Fairy” - or for the kids, “The Pedestrian Fairy”; 7pm - Stick around the Old Point for the Bourbon Cowboys at 7 & Westbank Mike at 9; or cruise Algiers Point pubs & places; or jaunt back over to the CBD & French Quarter where your fairy/ferry costume-or Key to the City-is your ticket to deals & discounts in all three neighborhoods. pride corner/new orleans by: Todd J. Blauvelt ell it's time to look forward to a brand new year of planning for PrideFest 2008. A membership drive is underway to attract interested individual to the New Orleans Alliance of Pride. Membership is relatively simple to obtain, all you have to do is inquire at pridefestneworleans@yahoo.com. Membership requires that you supply in writing to the Alliance your legal name, mailing address and that you subscribe to the purposes of the Alliance and the purpose of the Alliance is to organize and operate the annual event known as "New Orleans Gay Pride" or "PrideFest" and other events for the purpose of promoting and demonstrating inclusion, pride, solidarity, and unity among members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community and it's community-at-large.

W

Since PrideFest last month our membership has grown to fifty-eight members as of this writing. All members are eligible to be nominated to the Board of Directors and are also entitled to vote on nominees to the Board. Our annual membership meeting will be held in the Friendly Bar's meeting room on Tuesday, August 14th at 7pm at which time, we (the 2007 Board if Directors), will reveal our income and expenses for 2007 and conduct the election of our new 2008 Board of Directors. The Alliance's Board can consist of no less than four and no more than seventeen directors and three of those spots are automatic; Mr. Gay Pride Keeno-Kane Broadway, Ms. Gay Pride Passion Armani Cassidine, and Pride Grand Marshal Toby Lefort, leaving fourteen position yet available. Nominations are now being accepted and thus far nominated are include:

Regina Adams, Christy Alford, Todd Blauvelt, Dee Cooley, Mae Falgout, Rikki Hill, Tyrique Kennedy, Morwen Madrigal and Kyle Scott. We concluded 2007 business at our July Board meeting and given that June was our busiest banking month of the year and that we had not received our bank statement by the time of the meeting, Christy was unable to provide a year end report. According to our bylaws the numbers have to be prepared and delivered to the membership at the Annual Membership Meeting, so we will have that information by that date. These numbers will also be published here in "Pride Corner" for public inspection and may be prepared and available prior to the annual meeting of members. One other issue to clear was our JetBLUE raffle for the two round trip airfares anywhere JetBLUE flies. We'd like to thank Marty of the Friendly Bar for drawing our winning ticket number 1185 purchased by Tom Bruneau and sold by Miss Dee Cooley. We hope Tom enjoys his trip wherever that may be and we'd also like to thank

Passion

I

f you have been reading my column for any length of time, you know that I love tennis. Last July I took my first trip to Wimbledon for the Championships. This year I am watching Wimbledon on TV. Last year I was cheer-

pride corner/new orleans ...from M-8 and we thank Café Pontalba, the rodeo and everyone that participated in the games. Lastly, as Chairman 2007, I'd like to give my most heartfelt thanks and utmost respect to the entire board of the New Orleans Alliance of Pride 2007. Without each of you, this year's events would not have been so successful. We laughed, we cried, we yelled, we struggled, we drank... okay, so all that was me, but you were all there to pick me up and encourage me through all that was necessary, even if it meant yelling back, to achieve what WE all achieved. Thanks Regina, Christy, Dee, Mae, Rikki, Morwen, Dave and Kyle. If you see these guys and gals out and about please thank them too. They deserve it in the biggest way. Visit the New Orleans Alliance of Pride at www.myspace.com/ pridefestneworleans.

ing for the two people that won the Championships. This year I am hoping for Venus Williams to win the women’s final and Federer to win the men’s final. I just lost my hope for Andy Roddick as he lost his semi-final match in five sets. It was a terrible upset. Roddick was predicted to win. I don’t know what happened but he looked exhausted after three sets and suddenly his opponent got a second wind to win the last three sets. With his head and eyes lowered, Roddick stumbled off the court. As a fan, I felt sorrow for the USA’s tennis reputation and sadness for the young man that I have watched play since he was in the juniors. It will be another day before I know if Venus is able to win. The waiting is almost painful but whatever the outcome, I am still looking forward to the hard-court season that will start soon after Wimbledon ends. That season will end with the U S Open where I again hope that Roddick will be a winner. I am thrilled that the Williams sisters are back in the game. I think they will do well also. How did I become so passionate about tennis? I did play when I was a child but I was never good. For most of my adult life, I was interested in tennis but my passion was road racing through the Sports Car Club of America [continued on Main-12]

sappho psalm ...from Main-10 and Formula One racing. Today I cannot even watch a car race on TV. I get bored. Tennis can be pretty boring also but still I watch for hours. Just today (the day of this writing) I watched a match that took five hours to complete in the morning (5am to 10am) and the Roddick match was almost four hours. Luckily, I had an appointment between the two matches so that I didn’t go blind. I had just gotten home after church to see Federer receive the winner’s trophy. God or Federer, that was a difficult choice. He also set another record – 5 continuous Wimbledon wins. Of course, Venus also set a record as the lowest ranked played to win Wimbledon. I was very happy with the results.

P

assion is a good thing. We all need a hobby to love to take our thoughts away from our disappointments or heavy work loads. Some love the theatre or motorcycles and some love volunteering or entertaining. One of the better home entertainers I’ve met lately is Joe Ruffino. He was the host recently for Game Day for Church of Christ the Liberator. Game Day was planned as a time to play cards & board games and fellowship with one another. Thanks to Joe and friend Stewart Chambers, who cooked for the group, we spent most of the day eating. I am not exaggerating that Joe’s gumbo, meat balls & sauce and cam piñata are perfectly delicious. All that combined with Stewart’s pies made for a passionate dinning experience. Elwood Richardson and I were lucky enough to catch a ride to Joe’s home in Abita Springs with Al Hardouin. Our problem was that we had great directions to the street but no address. Of course, the street was less than a mile long so how hard could it be to find a house in the country where gay men live? We drove down the road looking for something festive – maybe a flag or flamingos. That didn’t work. Next we drove the road again stopping at every other house, and I was elected to knock on doors to ask if they knew Mr. Ruffino. No one did. In total frustration, we drove back to the main highway to hunt a phone. There are no phone booths. We pulled into a hardware store where I was met by a kindly Neanderthal who allowed me to use his phone. I rushed back to the car only to find that Al was in the store window shopping. Men! So I did something that I never thought I’d do. I stood at the door and yelled “Al, let’s go.” That did it. Ten minutes later we arrived at the correct house. Al walked around to the back of the house. Elwood and I went to the front door. We knocked for five minutes before we were allowed inside because the “guys” inside thought we were joking. I never joke about standing out in the miserable summer heat. It was an inauspicious beginning that got better and better very quickly. In all, there were twelve of us enjoying the great food and games. I won the first game of cards. That’s no surprise as I have a passion for playing cards, especially Bridge. I gave my lucky seat to John, and he won the next game. Al came in second twice. And we ate, and ate. In between, we sat out in the beautiful two acre garden and smoked and swapped stories. Game

Day was a big success. Perhaps you’ll join us next time when it will be a pool party and Bar-B-Que.

I

believe we all have a passion for our community and those who serve it. So it is no wonder that I am on the Board of the GAA – Gay Appreciation Awards. It was a fun and entertaining evening at Cowpokes’ Marigny Theatre where Marcy Marcell was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. I’ve enjoyed watching Marcy entertain on stage since the 1980’s and was thrilled that she was, at last, receiving this well earned award. Bar stage entertainment has come a long way as anyone who has watched Teryl-Lynn Foxx and Lisa Beaumann over the years can attest. It was once again proven out by the Show Bar Top 5 Finalist: Bourbon Pub/Parade, Oz, Starlight by the Park and Cowpokes. However, my personal favorite for just plain fun/funny was the performance by the Cowpokes girls. I have two favorite moments at the GAA. First is when I get to give someone else an award. The second time is when the full board presents the Lifetime Achievement Award. Perhaps we all have a little grease paint in our veins. Wait for it – here it comes – the downside. Yes, the GAA has for years had a downside for me, and that is that PFLAG is not nominated. Are you people blind and deaf? PFLAG gives more money to needy Gay students in the form of scholarships than any other organization. Next year we need to nominate the PFLAG Scholarship Reception for Event of the Year. How much money you ask? In 2007, PFLAG gave $34,000 to Louisiana students. And more money was given to help families of gay teens for education and understanding. PFLAG speaks to colleges and businesses and the Legislature in our goal to win equality for all GLBT people.

M

ovies are also a passion of mine but when the press preview comes early on a Monday morning, I feel a little resentful. So maybe I wasn’t all together when I viewed Joshua. This is an over done subject – genius child reeks havoc on his loving family. The kid is a psychopath, let’s lock him up and let his parents have a life. And how does he get away with killing someone in the daylight in a Brooklyn park before dozens of people? The new young actor is beautiful and talented so it isn’t too hard to sit through. The best part of this film is the gay uncle who is loved by the crazy kid – there is a true Homosexual overtone. After Joshua, I was agitated and in dire need of a cigarette. Too many puffs off of a cigarette and I’m drunk. I smoked the entire fag down to the filter. Getting home was not the easiest three miles as I kept trying to drive into the car in front of me. With that in mind, I was not looking forward to the next film, Introducing the Dwights. This Australian made film is not for the young without life experience to appreciate the emotional ups and downs. To enjoy this film you must have an understanding of the difficulties of aging in a world where you were once beautiful and talented. It is the story of a mother maturing and a son fighting to leave the nest. The development was slow but I enjoyed the story. This is not a blockbuster but would be nice on a rainy afternoon. Go out and enjoy your passions.

NO/AIDS Task Force Holds 13th Dining For Life; Make a Date to Make a Difference: Eat, Drink and Help Fight AIDS

O

n Thursday, July 19, NO/AIDS Task Force is inviting everyone to support a great cause over a great meal for the 13th annual Dining for Life fund-raiser. The Task Force has teamed up with over 30 area restaurants to raise funds to help those affected by HIV and AIDS. In New Orleans, a city known for its cuisine, it couldn’t be easier or simpler to help those in need. Dine at one of the participating restaurants on July 19th, order your favorite culinary delights, sit back, relax and enjoy! At the end of the day, those participating restaurants will donate 25 percent of their proceeds to NO/AIDS Task Force. This year’s event offers a wide array of culinary delights. Whether it be the Creole cooking at Petunias and Mat & Naddie’s or more exotic fare at Hookah Café and Iris, there’s something for everyone. Diners can head down to one of the city’s newer hotspots, Fulton Street, and choose between 7 on Fulton or Wolfe’s in the Warehouse. And there are always casual options such as Louisiana Pizza Kitchen either in the French Market or uptown on Carrollton. For those not in the city, there’s Chad’s Bistro and Andrea’s in Metairie, Sherri Lynn’s Café in Gretna and even Dish on First on the Northshore. Since its inception, Dining For Life has raised over $400,000 to support the efforts of NO/AIDS Task Force. The agency was created in 1983 with only 14 reported cases of AIDS in New Orleans, and now proudly serves 12 parishes. To date, there have been over 26,000 cases of HIV/AIDS reported in Louisiana. New Orleans continues to be one of the hardest hit cities, ranking 7th in AIDS case rates among large metropolitan areas. NO/AIDS Task Force assists those infected with HIV/AIDS by providing a continuum of services such as: primary medical care, prevention education, HIV antibody testing and counseling, community outreach, mental health services, case management, housing coordination, medication distribution, meal delivery and a food bank program. Proceeds from this event will go directly to providing vital services for those infected with HIV/AIDS in New Orleans and its surrounding communities. Event Sponsors for Dining For Life are: Abita Beer, RAIN Vodka, Stolichnaya Vodka, Ambush Magazine, Gambit Weekly, NOLA.com, The Times Picayune, Where Y’AT Magazine, City Business, International House Hotel. For More information or the full list of participating restaurants, visit www.noaidsdfl.com, call 504.821.2601, or see the Dining For Life ad on Main-21.

Randy Bea Show Succeeds

T

he Golden Lantern bar at 1239 Royal Street in the French Quarter was a gathering place for celebrities when Anita O’Day, Judy Garland, Mildred Bailey, Pearl Bailey, Ma Rainey, Belle Barth, Chita Rivera, Idina Menzel, and Barbra Streisand among many others all showed up at least in spirit to sing along with the talented Randy Bea who now plays the piano at this ancient venue every Sunday evening from 7pm to 10pm. And what a show this multi talented man presented! Of course the spirits of all those pop music song birds were not the only spirits there among the full crowd, as many of our locals also visited the place to wish Randy Bea (also known as Randy Bibb) well and sing-a-long with his expert song rendition and piano accompaniment and each other. During the exuberant and festive singing, they were sucking up the booze and pouring out cig smoke from mouth, ear - and any other orifice possible as the bar crowd is prone to do at a popular night spot filled with popular local denizens,

Even I and Al Shea and Special Correspondent for www.CrescentCityChronicles.net, Hector Trau, were along with other local theater personalities Glenn Meche and Steven Patrick. (In the thickening crowd it was rumored that Melba Carondelet, clutching her ever present mayonnaise glass of Pernod was there. Supposedly, she was overheard loudly regaling bored patrons with more than Twice Told Tales of her time on stage with Vera Charles and Bell Poitrine.) The plots thickened as more and more drinks were enjoyed and more and more locals joined in jostling for the spotlight all hoping to get to sing the definitive version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, which I think was finally done by Elwood Richardson that night. Now, if that wasn’t live theater I don’t know what is live theater! You can also become a star every Sunday evening at this historical old boite and who knows you may even get some spotlight-role at Le Petite Theater du Vieux Carre, Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre, or Theatre Marigny just by brushing shoulders with the local

(And Brush Up Your Shakespeare and “they will all kow-tow” and then you may end up in multi-lingual, ambi/pansexual casts of The Shakespeare Festival at Tulane University.) It was a good crowd and a lot of fun and some of those people can really sing.

he Four Humor’s production company gave its second show, The Third Degrees of J.O. Breeze on the stage of the Hi Ho Lounge at 2239 St. Claude Avenue. This is a curious and well written play by Chicago playwright Beau O’Reilly. Mr. O’Reilly has a felicitous way with language, and this existentially tilted play is lush with wonderful phrases and imagery.

3 zucchinis, halved lengthwise and cut into ¾" pieces ½ cup golden raisins 1 teaspoon kosher salt Grated zest of one orange 1 (14.5 ounce) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained 1 ½ cups chicken broth ½ cup orange juice 1 ½ cups couscous 3 tablespoons chopped fresh mint Place a large heavy pot over medium heat. Stir in the first seven ingredients; gently toast until fragrant, about three minutes. Stir in oil and onion, cook until softened. Stir in bell pepper and zucchini and cook for five minutes. Stir in the raisins, salt, zest and garbanzo beans. Pour in the chicken broth and orange juice and bring to a boil. When the mixture is boiling, stir in the couscous and remove from the heat, and let stand for five minutes. Fluff with fork and fold in the fresh mint. Yield; eight servings.

Sauté over medium heat for five minutes. In a medium saucepan put three tablespoon oil and the next six ingredients, saute over medium heat for three minutes. Pour mixture into the Dutch oven and add the rest of the ingredients except the spinach. Simmer twenty minutes, covered. Add spinach to pot and cook five minutes more or until spinach is wilted. To Play Among The Palms: Part Four

A

fter Brick left, to return to driving his cab, Ty stretched out on the bed in his room at the Willows Inn, it felt good to stretch out after the long flight he had just been on. He just laid there staring at the ceiling fan, thinking about how direct Brick had been with him, no real hedging around the bush about his gayness, just a direct statement and then a date. He had to admire his directness, if this was Frisco, it was sure different than anything he had known or thought it might be. Hell he hadn’t even checked in to the city yet and he was already going out with a hot man. Laying there he had fallen asleep and when he awoke he was startled to find how much time had passed. It was already four o’clock and Brick would be arriving soon. He sat up at once, and rubbing the sleep from his eyes arose and slid his pants off standing where he was. His Hanes followed and he stepped out of

trodding the boards ...from M-22 acter who bounced from desk top to chair to stage floor with kinetic intensity. In those scenes in which just by sitting on his desk in the glow of a red light, wearing a frayed clown collar and ghastly makeup he established a remarkable and theatrically effective stage presence as he interviewed the job applicants. And when one considers how he managed to keep his legs folded against himself when he hopped around the stage, one cannot help but appreciate his awesome stage craft. Joseph Dominick played the role of the troll’s assistant, The Captain. He did an excellent job. His job was to constantly type comments on an old manual typewriter as the troll interviewed the man and woman. Mr. Dominick took this smaller but important role and made it bigger. Being a big broad shouldered man helped him in establishing the rough brutality of this biker-type character with a smooth well conceived technique especially in those moments when he rose up and threatened the man and woman into submission to reveal their secrets. Keith Launey, once again, did a splendid job in his part, performing the role of Horace, the man being interviewed by the troll. Mr. Launey seems to be a natural actor and it’s a pleasure watching him on stage as he deftly creates the character he imagines, and brings him to life so well. He makes it seem effortless. Jennifer Growden played the role of Doris, the woman with a certitude of style and effort. She has a lovely stage voice and demonstrates a fine knowledge of the subtleties of performing demonstrated by her top notch job in this show. The program gave the actors credit with the direction of this show, and if so it surprises me that it was done so consistently well on a small stage with very limited set pieces and lights. I guess miracles can happen on the stage when the actors are so good.

them leaving them in a pile at the side of the bed. He pulled off his socks and tshirts and deposited them with the other pieces of clothing and walked into the bathroom. He was surprised to find out how big the bathroom was in this room, not at all like the ones in some big hotels he had stayed in the past. This was more like a home bathroom, large and comfortable, with a lion clawed bathtub with golden faucets, that was so large and deep he could easily stretch his six foot frame out in with no trouble at all, and when full, the water actually came up to this chest. It’s warmness felt good and relaxing after being cramped in that small plane seat for so many hours. He relished in the soothing waters, and must have dozed off for a little bit, for when he awoke the water had taken on a slight chill. Hell he thought to himself, as he let the water run out and stood out of the tub to dry himself off, how much time had past? Has Brick already

Little Me & Sugar Babies or A Little Goes A Long Way

G

ood and competent performers were on stage in two recent glorious productions from the musical comedy genre. So much has already been written about these two shows that I shall be brief:

Sugar Babies

S

ugar Babies - an innocently risque valentine to burlesque - was produced at Le Petit Theater du Vieux Carre and directed with wonderful boundless energy (choreography - from precision tap to glowing Minstrel Show banjos - was created in exuberant period detail by Karen Hebert) and verve by Sonny Borey and Derek Franklin. It was a joy and wonder to behold. Trina Beck, Dane Rhodes, Bryan Wagner, and Karen Hebert illuminated the stage in just about their every scene as did the ever amazing Michael Sullivan, Bob Edes, Richard Hutton, and Robert Richardson. Trina Beck, like Karen Hebert, was outstanding and beautiful, performing with grace, humor, and elegance and a lot of good comic timing. Her nicely naughty fan dance with lavender feathers and matching set and costumes was stunning. There were fourteen beautiful young women the show’s chorines called the Sugar Babies, each and every one a goddess; and four very handsome men in a tuneful Gaiety Quartet, all proven talents of the local stage. Space does not permit naming them all; but kudos to each and every one. This combo variety and burlesque show was a hugely successful work of show biz artistry, spectacular in every sense of the word as was Chad Talkington’s many many curtains and set pieces for the musical’s Gaiety Theater. The costumes by a coven of magic making designers, Roy Haylock, Regina Schlotzhauer, Linda Fried, and Cecile Casey Covert, were bright

been waiting for him downstairs? He was toweling himself when he thought he heard movement in his bedroom, but just shook it off as maybe creaking floorboards in the old house. He was drying his hair as he walked into the bedroom, so he wasn’t really looking and he just about jumped out of his skin when he turned to the bed and saw Brick stretched out across it. Brick laughed when Ty jumped. “Sorry I should have addressed myself, when I came in.” He pointed to a vase of roses he had placed on the dresser, “I wanted to surprise you.” “That you did, how did you get in here?” “I got a key from the desk clerk before I went back to work, I convinced him I was your lover and that’s why you stopped over for the night.” “Security doesn’t seem to be much of a concern around here.” Ty started to wrap the towel around his waist. “You don’t have to tie that towel around your waist. Are you mad at me?” “Not really, I was just shocked to find you in bed. If I’m pissed at anyone, it would have to be the desk clerk.” “If it’ll make you feel better I had to slip him a rather large bill to get the keys.“ “You could have just asked me, you know.” “It would have been that easy?” Brick and spellbinding. With Derek Franklin conducting a twenty piece orchestra and the brilliant Joanne Dendinger at the piano, our ears enjoyed a really well centered professional vaudeville-burlesque Broadway musical sound. However the many old burlesque joke and scenes did go on and on and on. This amazing show might have benefitted from a lot of editing in the second act. Cut out all the jokes and just keep in those amazing musical numbers. Sometimes a little goes a long way. In spite of this critique, one tired old word really does describes the production: FABULOUS!!

Little Me

T

ulane Summer Lyric’s lively and lovely production of this old 1960s cult musical, based on the book of the same name by Patrick Dennis, was a triumph and how could it not be with genius Michael Howard at the helm, and Maestro C. Leonard Raybon as Musical Director. Once again Mr. Howard’s faultless direction brought this somewhat dated work to life and even though I was never really engaged by the film-flam-flummery of the on stage fluttering and fluting story of the rise of the poor - but well endowed - Belle Schlumfert to famously notorious Belle Poitrine. I enjoyed seeing our own local star of stars, Ricky Graham, play Ricky Graham seven times in each role, as I did enjoy local second magnitude - but rising stars - Gary Rucker and Sean Patterson do the same in their secondbanana varied and multiple roles much to the delight of their many fans and family real, imaginary, extended, scholastic, digital, or whatever. Beautiful, and brassy when needed, Andriene Couvillion was very effective as the Young Belle, and Mildred Hong was excellent as the Older Belle. Francine Segal, as Mama Schlumfert, was a minor knockout wearing one of the most humor-

undid his belt buckle and started to unbutton his five-o-ones. “You thought I was going to be hard?” Brick smiled, and pulling his jeans down smiled up at Ty, "I was kind off hoping.” Ty dropped the towel and fell forward on top of Brick. “And I feel my wish is starting to come true.” Ty chuckled, “I aim to please.” Brick drug Ty’s face down to him and planted a long very hot kiss on the younger man. “Well you're aiming it in the right direction.” Brick laughed as he threw his legs around Ty’s waist. “What you say we play around a little before dinner.” “I say yes.” And so they did, they played, and played and before either one of them realized it, the sun had set over the city. By the time they did get out of bed it was nearing ten o’clock. Getting dressed Brick said, “Where in the hell did the time go?” “You don’t remember? Weren’t you enjoying it?” “Damn right I was, it just went so fast. I had planned on taking you for a great dinner, showing you what San Francisco was all about, but we drop dead about two and there isn’t much time left.” “I think I’ve seen the best of the city already. I’m fine with just getting something to eat.” “But, you wanted to see the Castro.” “So I’ll have an abbreviated tour.” He started to get dressed. “You like seafood?” “Sure.” “Great, there’s a nice place not far from here, within walking distance actually. We’ll start there and the bars are just a short walk away.” “Sounds great.” They were about to walk out the door, Brick took him in his arms and gave him one more kiss before opening the door for him. “You might want to grab a light jacket, even in the summer it has way of getting a chill in the air around here.” “I’ll trust you to keep me warm.” Ty gave Brick a rather lustful look as they headed out the door and down the stairs. The same guy, who had checked Ty in was reading a book under a lamp in the corner of the main room, he looked up as they entered, smiled and nodded as they left the building. Once outside, Ty kind of wished he had taken Brick’s advice and grabbed a light jacket, because the air already had a crispness to it, but Brick at once took him under his arm and he felt his warmth and he knew it was all he would need. It was a great feeling, but odd at the same time. This was something he could get use to. [continued on Main-27]

ous and trashiest “ho” costumes seen since I covered drag shows in the 1970s. Handsome Steven Lucas as “Lucky” Musgrove had great stage presence, and sang, danced, and semi-stripped with pizzaz. Co-Director Edmond Kresley created some great choreography for the cast; and Michael Batt added fun and sparkle with his delightful lighting design. Charlotte Lang’s costumes were visually beautiful and well done. But alas, the show seemed to drag and all too often a little goes a long, long way with some stars of the local stage.

one last song ...from Main-26 Two guys would never walk around where he was from locked under each others arms. It did feel good to him, but strange none the less. But this was after all San Francisco, this was what it had stopped over here for the night to experience. It just never in his wildest dreams thought this would be so easy to achieve. Maybe all his dreams would not be for naught, as he had feared they might be, after all this was already more than he had expected to realize on this trip, and if this was only the beginning, who knew what else would be in store for him. As they entered the restaurant his hopes for the remainder of the night and in fact for the whole trip were soaring. They sat at a booth right in the window, where they could watch the traffic going by. They didn’t sit across the table from each other, but rather side by side, Brick’s hand resting on his thigh as they read the menu together. He didn’t even remove it when the waitress came to take their order, but just left it

there as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Lord how liberating this whole experience was becoming. He watched the foot traffic streaming pass the window as they waited for their food. It was just amazing to him how many guys were walking to and from the establishments arms linked or around each others waists. Showering each other from time to time with kisses. About the only things that didn’t occur on the streets here was the actual copulation. From what he understood that had started to happen in

the back rooms of bars again. He had wanted to question Brick about that, but now that they had gotten it on so well, he was almost afraid to do so. He didn’t want to ruin this night, or rather what might happen after they made the rounds, as Brick had put it. It was obvious to Ty, that [continued on Main-29]

e-mail/letters Subject: Petition for Vitter Resignation Hi, I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed: “Petition for the Resignation of David Vitter” http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ VitterResignation/?e. I really think this is an important cause, and I’d like to encourage you to add your signature, too. It’s free and takes less than a minute of your time. Thanks! --Toni Pizanie

Subject: from Greg Herren Dear friends: As some of you may or may not know, I am a candidate for a seat on the board of directors for the National Stonewall Democrats. This has been a long journey for me; and I am very proud and excited at the possibility of affecting real change, not only within the party but in our country as a whole. Over the last ten years or so, I have watched and deplored as a Republican controlled government has slowly but surely tried to dismantle the Constitution and abridge the civil rights and liberties of people of color, women, gays, lesbians, and the poor. They currently have three candidates for the highest office in the land who do not believe in evolution. Opponents of equal treatment for the LGBT community skoff and call it ‘special rights,’ which is specious at best. We aren’t fighting for ‘special rights,’ we are fighting for the rights the Constitution of the United States guarantees EVERY American. There are no footnotes to any clause of that document that read ‘except for the LGBT citizens.’ And isn’t it interesting than an illegal alien can marry in this country, while some ‘tax-paying citizens can’t? Working closely with Party Chair Howard Dean, the Democratic Party has recently implemented a new policy requiring state delegations to the National Presidential Convention include a minimum number of GLBT delegates. This is change—and an example of the Democratic Party’s commitment to our community. But in order for our voices to be heard, we have to raise them. I am asking you to help me in my candidacy for the board by making a donation to the National Stonewall Democrats, to assist them in their battle for our rights. Anything will help; $5 multiplied by 100 is $500. You can do this on-line at http:// www.stonewalldemocrats.org/contribute/ ; you can also get more information there about how to get involved. In order for our voices to be heard, we have to raise them. Join us in the fight for a LGBT friendly Congress and White House. Sincerely, --Greg Herren

Subject: www.marignyperks.com Greetings to all, Our website is now up and running. If you are out of town, you can join our online community at www.marignyperks.com. If you are in New Orleans, you may find yourself on the

Photo Album page. The site is visually appealing and content rich - thanks to the fine work by Billy, who also supplies the shop with mini loaves of bread, baked fresh daily, along with other treats. I really want this experience to be interactive and dynamic so I hope you’ll go to the Coffee Talk page, register and express yourself. I’ve started a couple of topics and look forward to seeing your interests on that page. There is a link to a blog I write and post comments to it too. — Bob Patience, Marigny Perks, 2401 Burgundy St., New Orleans

Ambush Mag Dear Rip and Marsha: I have finally decided: I am a fan. I have lived in many parts of the country, notably the West Coast, where gay pride and related-causes are well supported and funded ...after years in NOLA, I have found this is not the case locally. Were it not for the two of you, there would be little or no support in this haven we call New Orleans for these types of events and organizations. A local krewe leader told me that unless the locals can attend a bar nitely, they have no interest in participation (gay causes, functions, orgs, etc.), and thus so many old-style groups face a bleak future. Only your publication, thru publicity, keeps the drum-roll going. Keep it up ...please expand your “letters to the editor” section, which allows a lot of stimulating correspondence to make it to print. Personally, I live in AL but consider myself in exile from NOLA. I appreciate your work. Sincerely, --Wes Jackson

one last song ...from Main-27 Brick intended to spend the entire night with him. As far as he was concerned, that would be just fine with him. Just then there was a rap at the window. There were a couple of guys outside waving at Brick. The two what Ty supposed were referred to as Leather Daddies, in this part of the woods. Brick smiled, waved back and enticed them to come into the restaurant. They entered the restaurant, arms casually wrapped around each others waists, made their way to the booth and slid in on the other side. “Tom,” the taller of the two extended his hand toward Ty. “This is my other half Jimmy.” Jimmy just nodded and smiled.” “Name’s Ty,” he shook the extended hand. Then directing the conversation towards Brick, he asked what they were up to after dinner. To which Brick told them Ty was just here for the night and he was showing him around. “Good night to be in Frisco, it’s a full moon and the parties are already going wild.” “Where are you all headed?” Tom rattled off a name that Ty didn’t really hear, and wouldn’t have known it anyway. “Maybe we’ll see you there. You want to get some dessert with us or coffee?” “No thanks, we want to get our usual place. We’ll watch out for you, if you decide to come.” “It’s up to my date, don’t really know if he’s up to that or not.” Tom and Jimmy said their byes, rose and left. Just as the were about to exit Tom turned looked back directly at Ty and winked.

“Into what?” Ty asked as the door closed behind the two. “Leather baby, leather.” Ty blushed a little, that was one thing all the magazines from the west coast did cover, the leather scene. “You are blushing, is that suppose to be a yes or no?” “I’ve read about it for sure, I don’t know if it's something I would get into, but I’d kind of like to be voyeuristic and maybe take a peek. To me it reads sexy, but then again sex to me has always been more, how would I say it, more comforting I guess.” “You don’t have to get involved in anything you don’t want to, I’ll guarantee that.” “We’ll see.” Dessert was delivered, ending the rather awkward conversation. Being honest with himself as he devoured the cake before him, he had to admit the bondage thing did posses a certain titillating thing effect on his libido. But he was not sure he would enjoy being tied up and have some stranger have total control over his body, it seemed to be a matter of trust for the most part. The guy would have to be someone he could trust completely, and currently there was no one who would fit that bill. On the other hand if he were the one to do the inflicting, to be the daddy, it had interesting possibilities, but he wouldn’t because he didn’t want to really hurt anyone. Maybe however with a little instruction in the art, he might give it a try. He didn’t mention these thought to his companion. After a ten minute spat about whom was going to pick up the dinner tab, Ty finally relented and Brick paid the waiter. They left the restaurant and without any discussion joined the parade of gay men cruising the street. They stopped on more than one occasion allowing Brick to introduce his new trophy. Ty was kind of getting off on all the attention he was getting until he commented about it to his escort. New meat on the street was all Brick had to say to bring him down a notch or two. “Is that the way you think of me?” “No, I was referring to my street mates that’s all. I shouldn’t think that at all, after you think about it, who was waiting for you in your bed after you got out of the bath. Do you think that was someone who wanted to share your one night in town with the entire Castro area?” “I don’t think so.” “Well let's just go take a peek as you put it and then head back to your place. How does that sound to you?“ “Great,” was all Ty said as Brick escorted him into a dimly lit bar, which had no sign in front or anything else to let you know it did exist.

ummer is finally in full gear. It is time to break out the bathing suit, grab some sun and get a little color because who wants to look all Gothic pasty (so last millennium) for the upcoming whirlwind of must attend social events. Austin’s party season is upon us beginning with the granddaddy of all bar events – Red Hot. Friday, July 20th Oilcan Harry’s will unveil the 16th incarnation of this annual blowout all benefitting Project Transitions. Austin institution Steve Higgenbotham along with Oilcan Harry’s began this event in 1992 and they have made sure each year was bigger and better than the one before. Over the years, this event has raised over $155,000 for Project Transitions. This year’s event begins at 5pm and features an extensive complimentary buffet, a silent auction of interesting Austin items, the dancers of Manwatch, happy hour pricing until 10pm and a featured appearance by the Austin Babtist Women. Red Hot offers a fabulously fun way to give back to those in need by providing much needed support to Project Transitions’ programs and services. For more information see any Oilcan Harry’s staff member. Hats off to Steve, Tommy, Larry, Randy, Cody and all the crew at Oilcan Harry’s for

helping make Austin the city with a heart.

Doing the Market

I

n Baton Rouge, “doing the market” has taken over where “making groceries” used to reign supreme. In fact, I had not heard the grocery phrase until I moved to South Louisiana. In my old stomping ground in North Louisiana, we went to the grocery store – period. However, let’s just say that “doing the market” in old Red Stick means getting to see your gay friends in a setting other than the bars or at major parties. I rather enjoy my Saturday outings, and I do believe that the Farmers Market, held for only four hours, 8am until noon, on Saturdays on Fifth Street on the west side of the main building and facing St. Joseph Cathedral, is probably one of the best things to happen to the downtown area in quite some time. Of course, our fine city has finally realized that a vibrant downtown is only as good as what is offered to its citizens. With all the new buildings now being occupied by state offices, and all the new restaurants and businesses, the life of the city is coming back. Even with all of this, one has to realize that it is still a government town, and at quitting time on a weekday, be prepared to see a mad dash home for most of the employee here. It’s like Main Street and Spanish Town Road become the major exits, this being

a sad situation since it goes through the vibrant heart of a great downtown community. For sweet Jeanne, it means stopping at Hound Dogs. There is a stop sign at 7th and Spanish Town Road, but I look for a major accident to happen here, especially at the time when all the state workers are anxious to get home. I don’t think these people realize what they are doing, but speeding through a neighborhood just isn’t the proper thing to do. Their only thought is a selfish one, and that is to get home and relax. What do they care if the people sitting in front of the Capitol Grocery or on the front porches get their lungs full of exhaust fumes? After all, there is still that old lingering description of Spanish Town being a place for old hippies, queers, and riff-raff. I do believe a former mayor projected that image. However, I beg to differ with that summation of life in Spanish Town. This small area is home to many professional people including lawyers, writers, retirees, professors, real estate executives, and many others too numerous to name here. In fact, the state workers who live here know exactly what I mean when I say that Spanish Town is a short cut to getting home. Perhaps the police department will sooner or later catch on and set up a few check bears and yes, Babtist Women, the Capitol City Stampede is going to certainly heat up the summer. Why miss any of the fun? Book a room at the Wyndham Hotel, host to this year’s rodeo. Busses will be provided from the host hotel to the warehouse district bars on Friday and Saturday nights. Be sure to inquire about special limited VIP passes that come with special parking and a VIP only area at the rodeo arena complete with snacks and libations. points. It would bring an immediate increase to the city’s revenue. Walking dogs or checking out neighbors is a way of life here. Going to market requires only a nice little walk over to see everyone and to pick up the latest fresh fruits and vegetables. Taking in the sights is wonderful, and the first Saturday of each month brings in the arts people with their exhibits in the Cathedral parking lot. In case of a wedding or other activity when the parking lot is needed, the arts people set up in other parking lots or on the grounds of the state buildings. There are numerous shops and places to eat that are not only open on Saturdays but also during the week. This is a very active and important section of the downtown area. As soon as I grab my fresh produce and load it in my car, I’m ready for breakfast and chatting with friends. It’s become a common sight now to see people hugging old friends or gathering in groups to talk. Last Saturday, my sweet little Corey came running over to me and gave me a big hug. I really like this little stud, and he is a good example of the goodness and excitement you can see in the youth of today. There is a more open attitude toward sexuality, and this is a good thing. Of course, there is a limit to this, but I also noticed two lesbians walking through the market area holding hands. You just seldom see this in Baton Rouge, and I rather like the new air of confidence that the younger people are bringing to the city. Harry’s always pulls out all the stops to make sure an event is just that – an event. This one will be one for the books I am sure.

Newcomers from Florida, David and his significant other, are examples of a new gay freedom too. They brought their dog to market, like so many others do, and even the lover’s parents were there, separated but still friends, and the daddy decided that gay was the only way to play. It’s nice to see the attitude of acceptance here, and that is something else that is totally new. At least it is to me. Being from a small town in North Louisiana, you know this would not ever happen. Growing up gay, you knew there were others like you, but nothing was ever said. If you didn’t fit in, you were called sissy. I still hate that word. It’s ugly and demeaning and totally unnecessary in anyone’s vocabulary. I don’t recall the word queer or gay ever being used, but when you enjoy being a bookworm and studying was your way to overcome the fangs of fellow redneck buttwipes, you adjusted to the time and the place and you finally overcame whatever obstacles were in your way. So as you can see, the market idea is not only benefiting lots of people, both farmers and residents, but it is a place that allows you the opportunity to be yourself, limited but there anyway. I look forward to Saturdays. However, if you don’t get there early, you will find the produce limited, and the early birds will be gone. Just remember that when you stay out Friday nights and have a few too many drinks, I don’t think the market is a place to clear up that hangover. If you are up and ready to meet the world, come on out for a strong cup of coffee and meet your friends. I think you may be pleasantly surprised.

nother morning place to be is the Cake Palace on Essen Lane. I usually stop here when I’m in this part of town shopping or donating my time to my favorite work area, a local historical and gardening spot. I’ve been dining here for quite some time, but recently I looked up and saw a face from my past. My brain didn’t reveal the identity of this individual to me until I point blank asked her who she was. Forevermore, it was Poppy. I had not seen her in a long time and had met her through one of the Mardi Gras krewes at one of their parties or bal masque presentations. At any rate, I was pleasantly pleased to have made the re-acquaintance. In fact, in looking through some of the old pictures I took for Ambush Maga[continued on Expose-6]

ot is the only way to describe the weather here in Acadiana, but as temperatures continue to rise, the nightlife in Downtown Lafayette just keeps getting wilder. If you thought the Independence Day celebrations were incredible, wait until you see what’s planned for the rest of the month.

ound Factory, along with it's Back Side, are unbeatable when it comes to live shows and entertainment, and the month of July is no exception. In just under a week, on Saturday, July 21, Kofi and Company will be performing live at Sound Factory. For those of you who are either new to the gay world or have lived in a vacuum, Kofi is the premiere performer. She is not only fabulous, but hilarious, a combination that proves unbeatable for an entertainer. So mark your calendars and get ready for a wild ride because when Kofi hits Acadiana, there’s no knowing just how crazy things can get. Besides hosting some of the most memorable special events in the area, Sound Factory and it's Back Side also offer a weekly lineup that is second to none. The Sound Factory’s Hot Summer Drink Specials have been a real hit all

summer long. With their early bird specials every night from eight til 10pm, they’ve really given people a reason to hit the streets earlier. Their two dollar domestics and one dollar wells really hit the spot after a long day at work. And once it’s ten, the fun doesn’t end. Every night of the week, Sound Factory is offering a different drink special. So no matter what night you decide to drop in, you’ll get great prices along with their one of a kind service. They are open seven days a week and work tirelessly to make sure each night is both fun and unique. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory so feel free to come on out and serenade the city of Lafayette with your unique musical styles and talent. Whether you enjoy being on stage or simply watching those that do, you’re sure to have an awesome night. And the rest of the week is just as great. Between Mama Ray’s karaoke on Tuesday nights and Show Night on Sundays, they pack seven days with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are drink specials and some of the best dance music around. And unlike many other dance clubs, Sound Factory has a quieter more relaxed

side, a Back Side, where you can take a break from the loud music and socialize with your friends, or make some new ones. And when the conversations wear thin, all you have to do is walk around the corner to dance the night away.

V

Bar is planning a July celebration that is surely to become a classic in years to come. On Saturday, July 28, Michelle and the rest of the crew are holding their first annual White Party, and I know it’s going to be a night to remember. So you better start working on your tan because in just a week and a half, everybody you know will be decked out in their palest garments and ready to take Lafayette by storm. But don’t forget about the rest of the week at Lafayette’s newest gay nightspot. It’s open every Thursday thru Saturday and has a weekly lineup that is as different as it is inviting. On Thursday nights, they have Ladies Night. As the only gay bar in the city that offers a special night for women, they hope to create a haven, for at least one night, where women in the gay community can come out and feel truly special. The cover is only three dollars, and in return ladies get three free drinks. Now that’s a deal. And to make things even better, D.J. Tina will be spinning the best Hip Hop music around. What more could a woman ask for? Friday and Saturday nights at V Bar are for getting wild. On Fridays, if you're eighteen to twenty, there’s a five dollar cover, but for those of you who are twentyone and older, it’s only three dollars. And on top of that, you can enjoy two dollar wells and domestic beer until midnight.

To top it off, they play a variety of music to fit all tastes, sticking to more popular sounds, ranging from 1980s hits to today’s most popular songs. On Saturdays, V Bar is working hard to make sure those early birds have a great night. They offer free single well drinks until 10pm. And with either a three or five dollar cover, depending on age, those that get there early really get their money’s worth. After ten, V Bar has two dollar single wells and domestic beer until midnight. And as you’re gulping down cocktails, you’ll get to dance the night away to some of the hottest dance music around.

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-6 knew personally or just recognized from other places. Even though no outward expressions or greetings are made public, a nod or a smile is a common exchange that goes unnoticed by those around you. I often meet people here, like my buddy Danny or my straight doctor friend. It’s a great way to start any day of the week. Charles also works at the Cake Palace (which faces Essen and is located behind the big grocery store and across from the culinary school). I’ve known Charles for a long time, too long to even focus on the number of years. As I recall, I first met him back in the days of the old Mirror Lounge, a place that means so much for so many and is now locked away in our memories. I also see him when I go to vote in my section of town since he works in the voting precinct. (Again, this is another place to see happy people other than Charles.) I haven’t seen Charles’ Peter in a long time, probably since the Lafayette Royal Order of Unicorn Bal Masque earlier this year. I’m sure I can catch a sighting sooner or later at the Palace or in some other public place or maybe even at the market. Perhaps too, I can catch Peter at Hound Dogs, another good place to meet friends and influence people. haven’t dined at the Cake Palace, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to see friends and enjoy a great breakfast. If you are a late riser (my but that sounds sexy and makes me think of a certain Splash stud named David), then go over and enjoy lunch. You will be glad you did.

Doing the Tex-Mex

W

hile I’m on the subject of meeting places, I’ll do the Tex-Mex thing here. One of the most gay friendly places you will find is El Rio Grande Restaurant on Airline Highway, across from Cortana Mall. We haven’t had our big party gatherings there in quite some time, but dining there in small groups or individually is still a nice thing to do. Lots of friends consider this their favorite place, and I do too, mainly because the owner is a friend of mine. However, the food is also a draw here. It is absolutely the best and most authentic with the margaritas being the top of the line, so to speak. I also enjoy Marina’s, another Mexican place, this one located on Bennington, down from the post office. Not as many gay people are seen here, but this is probably because they don’t know it’s there. Again, food is the main draw because it is great and is served in large quantities. It’s owned by friends too as is Albasha, over in CitiPlace. This is a favorite for Lebanese or Mediterranean dining, and Trace is my most frequent partner here. And speaking of Trace, this man is just one of the best things to ever walked into my life. Our friendship is strong and endearing, and I miss him when he is out on his world trips. I can hardly wait until he returns to Baton Rouge. Gerry and I ate at Towne Center recently, at Fleming’s, but my main reason for being in this part of town is to shop at Whole Foods. I was first introduced to this fine food outlet when it was located on Esplanade in New Orleans. It was great to see it expand into Baton Rouge, and it’s nice to see so many happy people shopping here. After all, when you can run into that magnificent Lance shopping here, you know that you have come to the right place. I need to stop by Splash and see this sweetie again. He is just one great hunk of sexuality, and he makes my heart go pitter patter. Goodness, I’d better take a break and go fetch a glass of ice water. Doing the market on Saturdays has reminded me of so many places where I see my gay and lesbian friends. It just goes to show that you don’t have to go to bars to meet people. In fact, many of these people just don’t go out at all. They are happily married, some bi-sexuals, but others just happy in their same-sex relationships. Like so many others, I miss meeting and greeting people at the only gay bookstore that was ever in Baton Rouge. This, of course, was Hibiscus Bookstore. I used to gather lots of interesting stories and meet so many wonderful people there. This place of business offered the community a safe haven for buying gay-related materials, checking out or buying movies, stocking up on lubricants or getting the latest magazines or literature. James and Kyle at Hound Dogs get a lot of questions from their customers on what happened and why it closed. I’ve learned that it was because the building was sold and no other place was found that would allow [continued on Expose18]

C

ongratulations to Trixie Trailer Trash, Miss Possum Holler 2007. The Crescent City Outlaws held their annual Miss Possum Holler contest at Cowpokes, their home bar, on July 7th. While it is definitely a different take on the typical “beauty contest” the Outlaws always do a great job with this event. Outlaws' Mina, Nan, Kevin, Rich and pledge Erick were all there to help out. Nan and Rich were pitching in selling Jell-O shots that, I have to admit were quite tasty. Three contestants competed for the title. Besse Mae Truss became First Runner Up and Brad placed third. All contestants made for a memorable competition. The Outlaws are also busy planning their annual Run to be held this fall. Along with Jailbreak 8 will be the Fall meeting of the Mid America Conference of Clubs (MACC). Watch for more information on these important events in the next issue. You can also find more information at: www.crescentcityoutlaws.org.

O

ur neighbors in Mobile, AL are gearing up for a big ole Leather and Bear Weekend. August 17 and 18 things will definitely be hopping over on the Bay. The weekend will start with a Leather

Night at B-bob’s Downtown hosted by a new Leather/Levi club, the Southern Renegades. Renegade Darwin tells me they have a fun night planned with a theme of “Back in Black”. The evening should start around 9pm upstairs. Darwin also let me know that the evening will be a benefit for one of the local charities. Not a group to let things pass with just a night of partying, the Renegades have also planned a Bar-B-Q for Saturday afternoon, Meat the Renegades, on the patio at Visions. You may not be familiar with the Southern Renegades. This is a group of men, some of whom I have known for years, that have gotten together to foster Brotherhood and community spirit among the Gulf Coast Leather Community. You can find out more about the Renegades at: www.sorenegades.googlepages.com.

T

he Renegades are hosting these events as part of Mobile’s Bear Weekend. Yes, the GCBLA is hosting the 12th Annual Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest on Saturday August 18th at Bbob’s Downtown. The Bears weekend will benefit South Alabama CARES, a charity to support those affected with HIV/AIDS. The theme for this year’s Bear Weekend is Bears Gone Wild. I know I have

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-16 gay materials to be stocked. This gets back to the same age-old reason that one’s sexuality remains hidmentioned before, but the GCBLA puts on one of the most irreverent contests ever. Tired of the “Stand and Pose” contests? Well, get on over to Mobile as you definitely will not run into that with this one. The GCBLA is a prolific fund-raiser and have donated thousands of dollars over the years to various charities along the gulf coast. More information can be found on their website: www.gcbla.com. With all these clubs have planned, it is definitely worth a getaway weekend to head on over to Mobile. It is a beautiful city with great people. Weekend rate information for the host hotel is available on both the GCBLA and Renegades web sites. Can’t make the weekend, just pick a day or event and go, it’s only a few ours from New Orleans!

ack here in the Big Easy, a lot of folks are gearing up for Southern Decadence. After all, we only have just over a month before the largest Gay Weekend in the South is upon us. The New Orleans Bear and Bear Trapper Social Club will kick off the weekend with their annual Sire Ursus Contest on Friday, August 31. The contest will be held at the New Orleans Leather Company, 2230 N. Rampart Street, next to Cowpokes. NOBBTSC President Steven has told [continued on Expose-20]

den. The owner of a property can control what is being housed in and on their property. It was different with Hibiscus. The property owner was open to the business, and this became the main reason for its success plus the fact that it was a respectable and proper place to meet and greet friends on common ground. As with most small businesses, however, Hibiscus met the future, and the future was being controlled by the big boys, the major companies, and the smaller businesses began to be hurt by the expanded means of offering the same merchandise to customers. It was a handwriting that had been seen well in advance. Now, you can join a gay book club, or go to any of the major bookstores, or even go on-line and get whatever you need. The same is true for movies, lubricants, and giftable items. Therefore, a small business of this type could only offer the safe haven which isn’t enough to promote a continuing effort at giving the community what it needed. Now you have bars, markets, and restaurants, but what I miss most is seeing the hidden element of our society. Working with Ambush affords me the chance to meet others, but it isn’t the same as meeting them at Hibiscus. Maybe I should put on my Ambush shirt or get an Ambush cap and stroll through the market or wear it to my favorite restaurants. It would be like wearing the gay colors, a sense of pride for all to see. Ambush is synonymous with the community we all love. It is and has always offered a safe haven for those who read its pages and support its advertisers. May it live long and prosper.

I am sure the prizes will be worth showing all there is!

I

t seems there is always some thing to do in this great city of ours, not to mention all along the Gulf Coast. When was the last time you took the opportunity to play tourist right here at home. If you are like me, it has been a long time! Especially with all the work we have had to do in the past two years. Well come on folks. Take a day or even an afternoon and get out and see what you’ve been missing. It may well surprise you. Even though it seems too hot to get out during the day, remember how refreshing a daiquiri, Hurricane, Mint Julip or even ice tea can be on a hot July afternoon? I constantly hear locals talk bad about our home town these days. Yes, we have problems, but so does everyone else everywhere else. It is to our benefit that we live in one of the most unique and interesting places on earth. We just seem to get lost in the day to day struggles of our lives and forget to stop and smell the humidity! Take the time, this week. You may well be surprised how great it is!
