Grand Marshals set Official Southern Decadence Press Party for August 8 at Dance Club of the Year Oz

he Official Press Party for Southern Decadence 2007 is set for Wednesday, August 8, beginning at 8pm. Dance Club of the Year Oz, 828 Bourbon Street, will host the event this year.

These classes are designed to improve appreciation and participation in art programs that allow opportunities for children and adults alike to explore their own artistic talents. One of the largest annual celebrations in New Orleans, it has become known as the “Gay Mardi Gras.” People begin to arrive on the Wednesday before Labor Day, and generally don’t even think about stopping or going home until the following Tuesday. With over 100,000 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender participants, the economic impact on the city has been estimated to be in excess of $95 million. The city has recognized its importance with an Official Proclamation to welcome the event. The 36th annual Southern Decadence: A Celebration of Gay Life, Music and Culture is Wednesday, August 29 through Monday, September 3 with the extravagant street parade at 2pm on Sunday, September 2 beginning at the Home of Southern Decadence, The Golden Lantern, 1239 Royal Street. DecaFest Announces Entertainment

ecaFest 2007, a New Orleans Festival of LGBT culture, will start on a high note, literally, on Thursday, August 30 with an Opening Night Gala entitled “Sing Out, New Orleans.” The evening will feature a galaxy of New Orleans LGBT community singing talent, soloists as well as the New Orleans Gay Men’s Chorus, which is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. The evening will also include the New Orleans premiere of a short film entitled “Why We Sing,” shot at the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses Festival in Montreal. This exciting film shows the transformative power of gay, lesbian and transgender choral music – how it uplifts, inspires and unites. The Gala, to be held in the Freeport McMoRan Theatre of the Contemporary

Arts Center will conclude with a champagne reception honoring DecaFest supporters. Headlining the DecaFest entertainment line-up on successive nights at the CAC theatre will be two of the LGBT community’s leading talents in two more New Orleans premieres. Friday, August 31 will bring the stand-up comedy of Robin Tyler’s new one-woman show, “Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Groom.” The show opened February 10 at the Acme Comedy Theatre in Hollywood to sold-out houses. In this two-act multimedia presentation, Tyler dishes the last thirty years of the LGBT community, from early marches on Washington to breakups with lovers and the current Marriage Equality Movement. America’s first openly-lesbian comic, Tyler set the standard for later entertainers such as Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell. Jade Esteban Estrada, who dazzled DecaFest audiences last year in his solo musical, “ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the world, Volume 1,” will take the CAC stage on Saturday, September 1. Gambit theatre critic Dalt Wonk called the show “a slam-bang performance, a stunning transformation that actor/singer/ dancer/writer/composer Estrada pulled off before our very eyes.” He added, “I hope the rumors that he will return with Volume Two of his ‘ICONS’ series are true.” DecaFest producer Roberts Batson confirms that the rumors are true. In “ICONS; 2” Estrada will bring us a new cast of fabulous characters, “Alexander the Great, Queen Christina of Sweden,

Last Dance!

n July 22 , New Orleans MCC members and friends rejoiced with Pastor Dexter Brecht when he celebrated his last sermon as the pastor of their church. The title of his sermon was scheduled to be Trust in God’s Call to You. Campbell Soup, Exchange Rate and Being Good Lovers were the subsections – but a last minute change inspired Dexter to announce his sermon as Last Dance! here at his almost former New Orleans church. Campbell Soup is Mum, mum good! And so are we. During his formative years in the freezing northern Midwest, nothing was better than coming in from the snow to a cup of hot tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. This was comfort for him as God’s love is comforting for us all. The Exchange Rate in South Africa is over two to one US dollar. Our exchange rate with God is always more than this world has to offer. Being Good Lovers is something Dexter thinks the GLBT community is very good at but the love he wanted us to know about is God’s love for us and our love for our brothers and sisters in the world. The last time I attended MCC at St. Matthew Church there were only a hand full of people in attendance. On the day of his last sermon, the church was full with over one hundred worshipers and loved ones of Dexter. Throughout the church weeping could be heard. I felt hot tears of sadness rolling down my cheeks and a sharp stabbing ache in my chest as Dexter served me communion. His prayer for my spiritual and physical health touched my heart as he asked God’s blessings for me. This nd

was the last time I will feel his touch, I thought with a sense of loss. I have not been a member of Dexter’s church since the founding of Church of Christ the Liberator. My change was not because of Dexter. I was looking for a more traditional service as I had experienced at St. Anna Episcopal Church. When it came to ministers, Dexter was the most sensitive, pure hearted man I had worshiped under. But there was no need to attend MCC to find that Christian love Dexter has for all. Dexter’s love overflowed into his every day, his every act. To be his friend is a great honor. We worked together on the Up Stairs Lounge fire memorial. We struggled together to get enough money for the plaque that now is embedded in the sidewalk at the site of the fire in memory of those lost. We worked together on several projects and it was always a positive time spent with him. I am hopeful that before MCC assigns Dexter to another post, we will have the time to work on another project. One of the options investigated by Dexter is a startup community in South Africa. He has done his share of startup congregations, and will not be going to this far off location. He is still waiting to hear of other assignments although several potential offers are pending both in and out of the country. Dexter’s home was Iowa, the home of corn, he told us, where he grew up under the loving lessons of his grandmother who taught him respect and worth for self and others. Dexter was not raised by his grandmother but she is the person who first stirred his spirit and influenced his growth as a Christian. His grandmother was not a church goer like so many good

Christians I have met. For 13 and one half years, he has made New Orleans his home where he has fought for equal rights for the GLBT community and built the MCC community. Before coming to New Orleans, Dexter worked with MCC in Baton Rouge and in Minneapolis. He studied for his vocation at the United Theological Seminary. I felt the Spirit the first time I visited NOMCC, he said, I was glad to be a part of the community. It allowed me to grow both in spiritually skills and in practical skills, he continued. I am not the same person that I was almost 14 years ago, he said with a laugh. I can remember that man I met 13 years ago at the church on St. Roch Street. He has grown and become an influence in many areas of our community from MCC to HRC to art dealer. Dexter thanked his congregation and friends for worshiping with him this day. He preached on change – the difficulties and joys. He reminded us that all changes are to be rejoiced. He thanked us for our diversity and said he was joyful that his life has intersected with so many people from different walks of life. After the service, friends gathered at the home of Robert Turner and Donald St. Pierre to honor Dexter and celebrate the start of his new life. This beautifully resorted Uptown home has been the setting of many lovely gatherings but tonight was very special. No one wanted to say good-night to Dexter, and the 6:30pm reception lasted long into the night. Dexter is thinking of writing a book. His friends have encouraged him to do so. If I do write a book, he said, I will entitle it Theology of Relationships. This would be a book worth reading, I think, because the GLBT community is a blessing to him. His partner, Larry, died November, 1999. It was only a short time ago that he began to date again. Larry’s death made Dexter face many of the problems that his congregation has faced. It was another growing process. Larry left Dexter his art gallery, Ariodante, which Dexter has continued to operate and will keep whether he stays in New Orleans or not. Today he is preparing for White Linen Night. For the many of us who will miss Dexter if he leaves the city, there is always the blessing of having worked with him and learned from him. There will be a dark hole in our community without him. But Dexter loves New Orleans and its people, he will be back often and he will always be in our hearts. When change comes, we will know the trust and faith that he has and it will help us to face any changes.

Renegade Darwin tells me they are planning shot specials and a few other surprises for those attend-

ing. With these guys, you never know what will happen. The Renegades are also planning a “Meat the Renegades” Bar-B-Que on Saturday, August 18 from 6pm till …. Hungry for Hungary

or as far back as I can remember, the exotic names of Hungarian dishes have held intrigue for me. I mean, come on now, how many of you haven’t thought about such foreign sounding names like Goulash, Paprikash, Gulascinsuppe, well maybe not the last one, but you catch my drift. Well today we are going to delve into Hungarian cooking because to tell the truth I am a bit hungry for it.

HUNGARIAN STYLE MUSHROOM SOUP 4 tablespoons butter 2 cups chopped onions 1 pound mushrooms, sliced 2 teaspoons dried dill weed 1 tablespoon paprika 1 tablespoon soy sauce 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup milk 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 2 teaspoons lemon juice ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped ½ cup sour cream Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Sauté onions in butter for five minutes. Add mushrooms and cook five minutes more. Stir in dill, paprika, soy sauce and chicken broth. Reduce heat to low and simmer for fifteen minutes. In a bowl, whisk together milk and flour. Pour this into the soup and stir well to blend. Cover and simmer fifteen more minutes, stirring occasionally. Finally, stir in the rest of the ingredients. Mix together and allow to heat through, but do not boil. Serve immediately. Serves six.

GULYAS LEVIS (VEGETABLE SOUP) 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 tablespoons Hungarian sweet paprika 8 ounces textured vegetable protein 1 green pepper, chopped 5 cups vegetable broth 4 cups potatoes, diced 2 large carrots, diced 1 tomato, chopped ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped Dumplings: 1 egg 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons water, as needed In a heavy pot, heat oil over medium heat. Sauté onions in oil until tender. Add paprika, textured vegetable protein and green pepper; cook and stir mixture until coated with paprika. Stir in broth. Add potatoes, carrots, tomato, salt, pepper and parsley. Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer till carrots and potatoes are tender. In a small bowl combine egg, flour,

and ½ teaspoon salt. Mix in enough water to have a smooth consistency; dough should be stiff and sticky. Spoon on to a flat plate, slice off small amounts into the simmering soup. Simmer until the dumplings are done. Serves four.

FLOURLESS HAZELNUT CAKE 12 ounces hazelnuts 2 teaspoons baking powder 6 egg yolks 5/8 cup white sugar 6 egg whites 1 pint heavy whipping cream 1/8 cup chopped hazelnuts, for garnish Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 inch spring foam pan. Grind hazel nuts until very fine. Add baking pow-

der and set aside. In a large bowl, whip the egg yolks with the sugar until pale yellow in color. Beat in the ground hazelnut mixture. In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites until stiff. Quickly fold 1/3 of the egg whites into the yolk mixture, then add remaining egg white and fold in until no streaks remain. Pour into the 9” spring form pan. Bake in the pre-heated oven for sixty to seventy-five minutes, or until top of cake springs back when lightly tapped. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely on a wire rack. When cake is cool, slice horizontally into three layers. Whip [continued on Main-24]

HUNGARIAN GOULASH 3 tablespoons butter 2 pounds cubed beef stew meat 1 pinch of caraway seeds 1 pound onions, sliced 2 teaspoons paprika 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 1 (10.5 ounce) can beef consommé 1 (10 ounce) package egg noodles, cooked, rinsed and drained Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the stew meat, caraway seeds, onion and paprika. Cook stirring until the meat is browned, and the onions translucent. Add the garlic and the lemon zest and cook for another minute. Stir in the tomato paste and beef consommé, adding water if necessary to cove the meat. Cover reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 1 ½ hours. Serve over cooked noodles. Yield; four servings.

CHICKEN PAPRIKASH 2 tablespoons bacon grease 1 large onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced ¾ tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 (2 to 3 pound) chicken, cut into pieces 1 cup water 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 (8 ounce) container sour cream Heat bacon grease in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, salt, red pepper flakes and paprika. Stir together and cook until onion is translucent. Add chicken pieces and pour water over all. Cook over medium heat for one hour, adding more water if necessary. Stir in tomatoes, reserving liquid. Whisk liquid together with the flour in a medium bowl. Whisk in sour cream until well blended. Slowly add mixture to the chicken. Cook until mixture is thick. Yield; four servings

Sauté onion until transparent, then stir in peppers and tomato paste. Cover reduce heat to low and simmer for ten minutes. Add beef to skillet, then stir in red pepper flakes, paprika,

Though I’ve not seen all of Argus’ major performances, I’ve come to believe that she can do anything...perfectly. With the operatically trained James C. Martin as Roxie’s defender Billy Flynn, it was a treat to hear the role sung with a set of pipes worthy of La Scala. As demonstrated in last year’s Pippin, Martin’s strengths lie more in his vocal abilities than in his acting. Yet Chicago’s moneyloving lead lawyer lies right within his emotional palette and he made as brash, obnoxious and charming a Flynn as one could ask for. As Roxie’s woebegone husband, Ricky Graham gave one of the best acted, genuinely touching Amos’s I’ve seen. Charlotte Lang, sans make-up and in a standard prison grey outfit, made Matron “Mama” Morton one tough cookie who seemed to have an eye for the girls; as with Martin, her trained voice added a touch of sophistication to Morton’s usual menace and guile. And even knowing the denouement of sob sister Mary Sunshine’s shtik didn’t lessen the enjoyment to be had from D. Bellais’ great portrayal of her. Unfortunately, Leslie Castay is temperamentally unsuited for the toughness of Roxie’s nemesis-turned-partner Velma Kelly and so threw the first half of the first act off balance. But once Castay got to the desperation of I Can’t Do It Alone, she found her stride and was fine. Musical director C. Leonard Raybon got the proper razzle dazzle from his band and the chorus members were all dandy; I just wish such talents as Chase Kamata and Joanna Richardson had had more to do. With human nature as steady as it is, I suspect 100 years from now Chicago will still provide as apt a commentary on society as it does nowadays...and that people will still be enjoying it.

Morning, Noon, & Night at the Anthony Bean Community Theater

ritten by Ted Shine, Morning, Noon, & Night is a curious play. Part dramatic, part comedic, part melodramatic and eventually a tale that could’ve been told around the campfire, with its uneasy mix of tragedy and humor, MN&N might best be described as Southern Gothic. After all, what better term fits a scenario that involves possible murders, venereal disease, rat poison, a fake leg that needs repainting and lotsa “Hail Jesus”’s? Despite feeling as though set in the 1960’s, MN&N takes place in a small1950’s Texas town. Twelve year old Ben Marvin lives with his aunt Ida Ray after the death of his parents. Gussie Black, his bible-thumping paternal grandmother, came to look after her ailing daughter-inlaw and stayed on after her passing. Nerves are becoming frayed in this unhappy trio. Ben would like his grandma to stop threatening him with the road to Hell. Gussie wants her bookish grandson to become a preacher. Ida Ray wishes [continued on Main-26]

Slowly, lies and a terrible family history are revealed with deadly results. It’s an intriguing and involving story though one wishes that Shine’s writing was a bit more muscular; the script would’ve benefitted if some of its repetitious flab had been trimmed away. Anthony Bean brought the same knowing yet unobtrusive directorial hand to MN&N that he has to August Wilson’s dramas and in so doing, generally kept the production grounded, letting it build gradually to its Walpurgisnacht of a conclusion. Bean was aided mightily by having the formidable Patricia McGuire-Hill as Gussie. McGuire-Hill brought all sorts of shadings to what could have been a stock character, the overbearing religious type who, when pressed, plays the helpless victim. Instead, while we may not agree with the choices Gussie made, McGuireHill begged no pity but made us empathize with, or at least understand, this sneakily avaricious woman whose husband was a horror and who tragically deludes herself with the belief that she’ll soon be starting the Gussie Black & Grandson Tabernacle. This Ambie Award-winning actress kept her performance from going completely over the top to ultimately riveting effect. When will someone give her the opportunity to do Shakespeare, Shaw and the Greeks? Young Tony Felix more than held his own with McGuire-Hill, no small task. Though he still needs to learn that part of acting is reacting when other characters are speaking, his future seems very bright indeed. Benita Scott marked a welcome return to the stage with a lovely performance as Ida Ray that anchored the play in a naturalistic reality. If Brittany M. James’ turn as a lovesick admirer of Ben was a bit overdone, it did

supply some welcome comic relief. John Grimsley & Matt Borel provided the solid set. I may not be sure what the message of Morning, Noon, & Night is—too much religion can kill you?—but I’m not sure it really matters. Sometimes fun, summertime entertainment is enough.

New Orleans Ballet Theatre at Roussell Hall, Loyola University

s New Orleans Ballet Theatre returned for its fifth season, how nice it was to see two of its original members fully come into their own. Husband and wife John Welker and Christine Winkler have always been outstanding dancers. But now Welker’s once unruly mop of hair has been tamed and Winkler’s facial expressions appropriately reflect the mood of the piece she’s dancing.

More importantly, in john and I..., a world premiere choreographed by Christopher Hampson, not only was their dancing flawless but they brought a heart-rending sensitivity, seen in the smallest movements of their hands or heads, to this ballet of a couple’s meeting, forming a relationship and ultimately breaking up. Hampson’s angular choreography, while breaking no new ground, employed couplings and positions not ordinarily seen which imbued the entire dance with an unexpected quality too often lacking in new works. Wholly successful, john and I... was a coup for NOBT; it deserves to be seen worldwide. Also on the program was the floating beauty of Les Sylphides. So pretty to look at, with the corps de ballet doing superb toe work, Douglas Gawriljuk staged this classic ballet after Michel Fokine. While one could overlook some of the leaps that weren’t as high as one would like, overall, with the exception of Winkler, the presentation lacked a certain oomph and feeling that prevented the work’s delicacy from coming through fully. The energy that Sylphides lacked was made up by Welker in Julia Adams’ Exit. To music by U2, Welker faced an existential dilemma—to go through the “EXIT” or not— with driven, pulsating awareness. I can watch Gregory Schramel’s Lakme Meditation, an absolutely beautiful work, again and again. With their willowy limbs, Aubrey Morgan and Marife Giminez seemed to be the most forceful and determined of the three pairings I’ve seen as though they were characters out of a Lorca play. That their landings sounded more like horses than birds did not take away from the overall gracefulness of the dance. Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco concluded the evening. Winkler’s crisp dancing outshone Morgan who seemed slightly tentative and not fully engaged with the work. The corps, however, provided a accomplished backbone for this classic ballet, a feast for the eyes that I did not want to end.

Coriolanus at the Lupin Theater, Tulane

ere a critic from Variety to cover the recent production at the Shakespeare Festival at Tulane, I suspect the headline might be Sandoval Lands on his Coriolanus. For rarely have I seen such a misguided performance. Antony Sandoval, a professor in Tulane’s Department of Theatre & Dance, played the title role in Shakespeare’s tragedy as though starring in a third rate silent expressionist film. Popping his eyes and furrowing his forehead substituted for deep character analysis; if audience members had started a new drinking game whereby a shot was done every time Sandoval raised his eyebrows, everyone would’ve been drunk by intermission. Employing, as best I can tell, a weird Scottish brogue, Sandoval gave line reading after line reading that all sounded the same except when using a wholly inappropriate mincing irony. Rather than illuminating Shakespeare’s exploration of democratic leadership, Sandoval was neither patrician enough (his Coriolanus seemed to have risen from the lower classes and was playing at being a noble) nor did he convey a smidgen of this warrior/politician/statesman’s psychological depth. I have no objection to radically reinterpreting a role; had the rest of the performances been similarly outrageous one could have accepted Sandoval’s perhaps. But this Coriolanus seemed to have been interpolated from another production, or even planet, altogether. Surely director Ron Gural must accept some of the blame; one wonders if Sandoval’s performance was done with his blessing or over his objections. For otherwise, this production was fairly standard issue Shakespeare. [continued on Main-29]

Frank was simply too young to be Coriolanus’ mother and lacked the inner, to-the-manor-born steeliness that is required. With Sandoval doing his own thing, a mother-son bond was never believably established. Ironically, what I’ll remember most about this Coriolanus is Cassie Steck Worley in the small role of Valeria, a friend of Coriolanus’ wife Virgilia. Wearing a mink stole as she tried to get Virgilia to go out socializing with her, Worley spoke the words so trippingly and with a complete naturalness that went beyond the text that one might have thought she was an Uptown lady who just wandered onto the stage. Brava!

Well-paced and well-staged on Qin “Lucy” Lu’s simple set, Gural allowed the rest of the cast to declaim the Bard’s lines with a consistency that, while intelligent, did not create any multidimensional portraits nor give rise to any “A-ha” moments of textual revelation that Gary Rucker’s Romeo & Juliet offered last year. To be sure, the fault lies, in part, with Shakespeare. Let’s face it, Coriolanus is not Will at his best and I do not envy those actors who must play too, too wordy scenes. Yet one could hear in certain passages the potential for much more penetrating portrayals than were offered here. Barry Hubbard and Danny Bowen, however, did well as two relatively levelheaded generals, though Bowen didn’t entirely overcome his local accent that served him so well in Rising Water. ell Ho-Ho-Ho. No, I haven’t gotten my seasons confused. It is time for the “Ho Show” at none other than Austin’s legendary nightclub, Oilcan Harry’s. On Wednesday, August 1st at 10pm, Oilcan Harry’s will come alive with the sounds of Gypsy, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret and more as entertainers take to the stage offering their unique interpretations of classic musical theater fare. What better way to welcome August than with a terrific evening of entertainment brought to life by the staff of Austin’s grand dame of nightlife. Oilcan Harry’s is certainly a class act and the “Ho Show” is shaping up to be another 1st class production. Speaking of 1st class productions, Oilcan Harry’s was the scene recently for the 16th annual incarnation of Red Hot. This event benefits Project Transitions and was brought to life once again by Steve H., Larry, and all the gang at Oilcan Harry’s. What fun it was mingling with the crowd, perusing the super silent auction items and people watching to beat the band. Spotted was Austin’s leading style maven Stephen Moser looking super. The pounds are falling off him so fast we could hear them hitting the floor. The Austin Babtist Women certainly wowed the crowd and Christine King delivered a Lucy impression so dead-on hilarious that I almost fell off the speaker that the standing room only crowd made sure I was pressed tightly up against. Summer Happenings

ut of all the clubs in the local area, it would seem that Splash has come up with a full schedule of great happenings. I’m impressed with their new Tuesday night openings with “girls only” attending to customer requests from behind the bars. This is a great idea since all the lesbian bars have closed down in old Red Stick. Since the days of glory back with Minette and her Hide-A-Way, things just haven’t been the same. There were lots of others that tried but failed miserably, which, in a way, was the sound of the death knell for lesbian bar history in Baton Rouge. Doubloons was the next closest thing to a great bar for women, and this too faded away into the pages of time.

With the new schedule at Splash, I see a resurgence of past glory, and this is what Baton Rouge has needed for the past two or three years. There is a new feeling of togetherness at Splash that wasn’t there before. In addition to being a dance bar, and a place for guys to come out and do their thing, I now see this facility as a great place for woman to woman camaraderie. I truly hope this all works out because now you don’t even have a place in New Orleans to really call an excellent lesbian bar. I can recall when Charlene’s on Elysian Fields and Rampart was the female counterpart to the equally important and popular Phoenix, across Elysian and on the corner of Rampart. After Charlene moved to the Mississippi coast, I kept saying I would pay her a visit, but I never got around to it. She was a super nice lady, conducted a great and proper business, and offered guests, be they male or female, a fine place to meet and greet others in a safe and sound environment. I miss Charlene, and I need to talk with Jeanne over at Hound Dogs about her party days with this bar baron. Even though Charlene is no longer with us, she left her mark on the lesbian history of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans areas. I have many fond memories of her.

Right now, it’s time to create some fond memories here in Baton Rouge by supporting Splash on their Tuesday Ladies Night activities. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 9pm to 2am, and you won’t find a dull moment anywhere during this time period. Check out their website at www.splashbr.com for all the great plans they have and for their upcoming contests, especially the web and sexy boxers contest. Where else can you go to see such sexy guys in watersoaked undies? My goodness! I need to stop and go get a glass of ice water. See you at Splash, darlings. George’s Place is also noted for some great activities, mainly their karaoke nights, their show nights with the Divas and the Bears, and sometimes the Jukebox cuties too, and those wonderful boys parading

around on the bar. Even at happy hour early in the evening, you can enjoy great drinks and nice conversations with friends along with great videos on all those television sets. I do my catching up on community activities by chatting with Luther, Michael and Ronnie. Occasionally, Chansley and Richard are still around, but they have to go home and rest a while before coming back for the night’s activities. I need to catch Aaron on duty sometimes. This is another extremely sexy, young, and dapper stud. After all this time, I really have never just sat down and talked with him. Maybe I can do this soon and pass along new info to you. ummer classes have ended and we’re in the final count down to the beginning of the fall semester. Over the next few weeks, there’ll be an influx of literally thousands of college students. And for every familiar face, there’ll be at least one that’s new to the area. For this reason, August is one of my favorite months. And as you would expect, the local bars go wild to roll out the welcome mat.

On Saturday, August 11, the Sound Factory and Royal Order of Unicorn are hosting the annual Hat’s Off. So grab your glue gun and get to work for what’s sure to be one of the most interesting events of the year. And just two weeks afterward, on Saturday, August 25, the Sound Factory is hosting the Mystic Krewe of Apollo’s Mr. & Miss Apollo 2008. Who will hold the coveted titles of Mr. and Miss Apollo for Mardi Gras 2008? Be there and you’ll get to watch the fierce competition that leads to two of the most prestigious titles in the gay community. It’s sure to be both fun and entertaining. esides hosting some of the most memorable special events in the area, Sound Factory and its Back Side also offer a weekly lineup that is second to none. The Sound Factory’s Hot Summer Drink Specials have been a real hit all summer long. With their early bird specials every night from eight til ten pm, they’ve really given people a reason to hit the streets earlier. Their two dollar domestics and one dollar wells really hit the spot after a long day at work. And once it’s ten, the fun doesn’t end. Every night of the week, Sound Factory is offering a different drink special. So no matter what night you decide to drop in, you’ll get great prices along with their one of a kind service. They are open seven days a week

Over the years, I have found this one to be more and more the right place to be, especially if you are walking to and from the bar. I’ve never heard of a DWI while walking. And I do remember walking with and helping people home. I have great memories of those days. Now, I try to limit my assistance by dining and drinking socially early in the day. However, this isn’t always the safest thing to do, especially if you go to a winetasting dinner and realize that the mixture of all those wines and the rich foods are not meant to be taken on by a driver needing to get home. I encountered this recently at a function of importance at Fleming’s. First of all, I don’t drink that much, and I certainly don’t mix when I do,

and work tirelessly to make sure each night is both fun and unique. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory so feel free to come on out and serenade the city of Lafayette with your unique musical styles and talent. Whether you enjoy being on stage or simply watching those that do, you’re sure to have an awesome night. And the rest of the week is just as great. Between Mama Ray’s karaoke on Tuesday nights and Show Night on Sundays, they pack seven days with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are drink specials and some of the best dance music around. Unlike many other dance clubs, Sound Factory has a quieter more relaxed side, a Back Side, where you can take a break from the loud music and socialize with your friends, or make some new ones.

Bar offers an alternative to the normal club scene. With its nonsmoking atmosphere and crisp, clean look, it really stands out in a city full of bars. It’s open every Thursday thru Saturday and has a weekly lineup that is as different as it is inviting. On Thursday nights, they have Ladies Night. As the only gay bar in the city that offers a special night for women, they hope to create a haven, for at least one night, where women in the gay community can come out and feel truly special. DJ Tina will be spinning the best Hip Hop music around. Friday and Saturday nights at V Bar are for getting wild. They play a variety of music to fit all tastes, sticking to more popular sounds, ranging from 1980s hits to today’s most popular songs. s the time ticks away towards the end of the summer, be sure to make the most of all that’s going on around town. Get out of the house and have some fun. No matter what night of the week you hit the downtown, you’re sure to find something festive going on. Until next time, have fun and be safe. but my buddy Garry invited me to this rather upscale dining experience tied into the wine tasting function, and before the night was over, I wasn’t sure I could make it home. Rich food and five kinds of wine are not the best for any body to accept, and my body was not ready for that. I am afraid I’ll have to stick to Lebanese, Thai, or Mexican, with one glass of wine, one bottle of imported beer, or one margarita to grace my meal of the evening - or stay at home and cook.

Summer Boys

acations are common during the summer months, and with Kevin, especially after the Legislative session has ended, a trip to Orlando to be with friends was certainly a welcomed activity. He does the unusual. He takes working vacations. He helps

friends, usually his rodeo buddies, mend fences, build this, that, or the other item, and comes away just as relaxed as I do after doing all that work in my tropical garden. I guess it is all in the way your body accepts relaxation. Of course, after these strenuous escapades at hard labor, a great massage is the only way to fly. That’s why I kept my massage table. I’m always there to help out my friends, and this week, it wasn’t the massage table that came in handy but one of my wing-back chairs. He had been up working all night, and by using someone else’s vehicle, he left his keys at home. It was one of those times when he never thought about being locked out of his house, but that’s what happened. After learning that he had no place to call home for about six to eight hours, he went to buy some clothes, came by to clean up at my place, and kept saying he needed to stay awake. However, it didn’t take him long to start snoring in that chair, so I went about my computer work, fixing dinner, and waiting for him to wake up. In a way, it was funny, but not for Kevin. However, looking back, he might agree with me. This morning, we did what we were going to do yesterday and that was to dine at Another Broken Egg. As they say, a day late and a dollar short certainly applied to this situation. Our breakfast was only delayed by 24 hours, but the wait was worth it. Now, we will do the breakfast thing on Thursday at the Cake Palace on Essen Lane. My very dear buddy and wonderful friend Trace is in Hawaii again, taking in the sun, and resting up. He’s been in Miami, but his friend on the big island treats him to some great times over Hawaii way. In fact, I’m not even sure it’s on the big island, but whichever it is, it is always great to see a surfing friend do what he needs to do to keep trim and fit and body beautiful. And there is no better example of beauty than in the eye of the beholder, and when that beauty comes from the heart as well as the body, it is indeed a great feeling to know that you are in some way a small part of the overall picture in this guy’s life. I am so fortunate to have had Trace come my way. Hurry back to Red Stick, sweetie. I haven’t had Lebanese since you left on your last trip. It’s just not the same when you aren’t sitting across the table or next to me as we talk of time, and place, and future plans. I miss you. In a different way, I miss John Wayne. I guess I wasn’t prepared to see him finally come up with such a fine and wonderful partner. After all these years, I just never had him in a relationship like he is in now. I’ve known him for so long, and I know his likes and dislikes. My only surprise is that I never thought about this combination before. I am so pleased to see him so contented and happy, and I am pleased to know that it is with Phil. Goodness! We go back a long way too. I think I must be getting old, but as long as I feel young, I guess that’s all that counts. I’m very happy for both of you guys. You deserve the happiness. I ran into another good friend at the Farmers Market last Saturday. In fact, it was the first time I had met his mother. I speak of the Winstead man, always smiling, always looking on the brighter side of life, and always as sexy to me as he was the first time I met him. And speaking of great times, I recall so many with this young stud. It was strange how we met at

the market. I had already been early in the day to pick up my fresh produce for the week, but I thought by going closer to closing time that I could give my dog a treat. So we started out – me with my camera and a bag containing water and a doggie bowl – and a very happy canine. Well, when these two canines met and started sniffing each other, I realized that this very dog had been to my house before, and sure enough, it was my ambulance buddy who I hadn’t noticed since he had his back to me – and I wasn’t expecting to see him in those loud and wonderful tropical shorts. It was a reunion of sorts since I hadn’t seen him for a couple of months. This guy is just a great individual, and I’ve always had a special place in my heart for him. He’s a dear friend. I also looked for my Splash buddy, now state worker, Corey. After all, it’s not just anyone that I hug in the middle of the street with all these people gawking at me, but with Corey, they can gawk all they want. This magnificent child is a picture of perfection, a youngster with a gorgeous smile, a beautiful outlook on life, and just reeking with a personality that borders on complete perfection. He is exactly the kind of guy you want to impress because secretly this is the kind of individual you want to take home with you for a permanent partner. I’ve met lots of guys in my work over the years, and not many have impressed me as much as Corey. He is definitely wise beyond his years, has a heart of gold, and is probably one of the most caring individuals you will ever meet. He is absolutely a gem of humanity. I think so very highly of him.

Summer Cleanings

ell, it’s getting closer and closer to Southern Decadence. I think I’m going to partake of all the activities this year. After all, I need the break, and I haven’t done but one vacation so far this year, and that was down in Ft. Myers, Florida. After my latest work project is finished, I’ll be heading out to Las Vegas, San Francisco, and maybe San Diego, but nothing is definite yet. I postponed my Atlanta trip until Kevin could schedule a time to go with me. When it happens, it will happen. I don’t worry about such minor things any more. My neighbor met me out walking my dog this morning, and he asked what I was doing, and without even thinking, I replied “nothing.” He said that was a good thing. After all, who can argue with the possibility of relaxing on a nice front porch with a glass of wine and surveying the world go by. I guess you have to be at peace with yourself to do that, and I’m just one happy camper. With the heat of the summer, and the possibility of hurricanes in the next couple of months, I think most people are on the watch out, posting their vacations for later in the year. Besides, what better vacation can one look forward to than the great Decadence activities. Hello Mark, John, Ernie, Timm, Kevin C. and Mina Babe - I’m in your future. I’m hoping to run into lots of other friends I haven’t seen since Mardi Gras and before. I may even have to stop in and have a cup of coffee with an old acquaintance, Mr. Patience. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him too or even checked out the happenings at Cowpokes. Of course, one upcoming event will draw a big crowd for the Marigny Theatre. [continued on Expose-16]

I miss the Saenger Theater and wonder if I’ll ever see my front row seat again. I just refuse to go to the plays here in Baton Rouge. New Orleans is the only place I would consider unless it might be to catch something at LSU. Every now and then, they offer the off-beat treats, but they are usually connected to someone I know, like when I did so much at the Black Box Theater. I rather think of the Marigny Theatre now as the place to be. If you really want to see great gay gatherings, I don’t think you can find any venue any better. I ran into Brett at the Farmers Market a few weeks ago, and he’s itching to get back to the Saenger too. I always made these plays with Sam and his sister. Now, I just wait until the right thing comes along and head out to enjoy these limited en-

gagements. I should just buy a season ticket to the Marigny Theatre. After all, I like the theater, I like Cowpokes, and I definitely enjoy my relationship with Timm. I haven’t heard anything about the future of the Saenger recently. I also need to get down and have a picture session with Larry Graham. After all, I personally feel as if he can do me up the way I would like to be done. My goodness! That sounds sexy, but it’s really the truth. I’ve been watching his work and find it to be excellent in all respects. Besides, I haven’t connected with him since Mardi Gras, and we are overdue. Call me, Larry dear. You have my number – in one way or another. For all of you other studs and lovely readers, have a great time visiting your favorite bars, fund-raisers or other charitable events, club activities, and the theater. y walked deeper into the narrow hallway, the darkness grew in intensity the farther he walked, he felt Brick take his hand and pull him in a little closer to him, this made him relax just a bit to know this man was taking control of the current situation. He walked about five more feet and bumped hard into someone standing against the wall, apparently there was a curve in the hallway. He stopped to apologize, but before he could get a word out, his body was covered with roaming hands and probing fingers, someone was unzipping his fly and he could feel someone else undoing his belt buckle. God, this was crazy, no one could see anyone else in this lightless pit, but it seemed everyone was out to get a little of him. Without warning suddenly he was turned around and drawn close to a hard body, he started to push away, then at once it felt very familiar and he knew in his mind that it was Brick and the move was executed to let the others know he was someone else’s possession. The hands withdrew some at once, others more reluctant, lingering to take an extra feel of his thigh, his butt, no part of him was overlooked for once last feel. When it quieted down, Brick took the lead steering him down the crowded hallway and into a dimly lit room. The only light here seemed to be from strings of small blue Christmas lights. It gave the room an eerie feel, a rather cool glow as if evil was waiting just around the corner. Slowly Ty’s eyed adjusted to the dimness of the room and he began to see men standing around and talking with each other. Well most of them were talking, others were doing things that were mostly reserved for the privacy of one’s bedroom. But this is what he had said he wanted, he wanted to watch. There wasn’t anything hard core going on here just a spanking or two and a little light flogging in one corner, but the muffled sounds coming from the rooms further to the back, held promise of stricter discipline. Brick asked Ty what he would like to drink, Ty whispered something in his ear and then Brick approached the bar and ordered two Scotch and waters. The bartender was an older man with a clean cut salt and pepper beard, well built body wise. He was wearing a black leather vest, biker boots, a black jock-strap and nothing else but a red hankie covering the crack in the rear. Ty stared as he bent over making the drinks. Brick knocked him lightly on the back of his head. “Your mama, never told you it was impolite to stare?” “My Mama never saw a sight like that.” He laughed very low. “Where I’m from, no one in their right mind would be tending bar in a public place dressed like that. You know I can’t ever really say I’ve seen a man tending bar.” “Sheltered life?” “Guess so.” Brick handed him his drink, it kind of glowed in the dark, he stared at it without drinking. “Black light

makes it glow like that, it’s safe to drink.” Ty laughed and glancing at the ceiling took a sip from his drink and said, “I never realized they were up there. “Better stay aware of everything around you or you might just miss what you want to see.” “I think I may have already seen enough.” “Really?” “I’m not sure.” “Let’s move on then.” Brick grabbed him by a belt loop and steered him to the red glow toward the end of the actual bar.” The further they went back the louder the sounds. When they entered the second room Ty could hear the cracks of a whip and after each came a muted groan. He looked to his right as they cleared the entry and saw Tom, the taller of Brick's friends bent over what looked like a hitching post his hands cuffed around his ankles, it was the smaller and younger one who was wielding the whip. He had figured it to be the other way around, he leaned over and whispered in Bricks ear, “My mom always did say, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover.” “Your mom was exceptionally bright.” Brick kissed him and let go of the belt loop. Just as Jimmy turned and noticed they had indeed come. “Like to try one or two,” he offered the whip to Ty. “I just came to observe,” he declined. “Don’t worry about hurting him“, indicating Tom “He can take more than you can dish out. “Maybe later.” Ty didn’t really want to offend either one of them, but he just wasn’t sure he wanted to be any part of this scene. “It would be my pleasure sir.” Tom looked up at him and winked again. Brick could sense Ty’s nervousness, smiled at his friends and said, “We’ll stop back before we check out, and led Ty onward toward another door at the end of the red room. This doorway had heavy black curtains hanging in front of it so that you couldn’t see anything beyond it. The sounds there were barely audible in the bar, were loud and clear here. As Brick led Ty through the doorway the sounds of passion filled his ears, it engulfed him complete, sending waves of sexual feelings through out his body. They seemed to be coming from every direction in the room, one after the other reaching towards a crescendo of enormous proportions. Ty stared into the silky darkness but still couldn’t see anything at all, he could sense movement all around him though, every once and awhile he could feel something or someone brush against him. Every inch of his skin was alive and pulsating with sexual tension. He felt Brick’s lips on the back of his neck and thought that any second he would just explode. Brick’s hands traced the outline of Ty’s body from just below his nipples downward stopping to undo his buckle and unzip his pants. Ty felt his pants drop [continued on Expose-20]

one last song ...from EX-18 to the floor as Brick nibbled on his ear. He all but melted into Brick’s arms, he closed his eyes and leaned back against Bricks body pressing him against the wall. He moaned loudly joining in the hedonistic chorus that echoed in his head seemingly now coming from everywhere . Brick began massaging the rump muscles pressed against him, Ty thought for just a moment that he was going to faint and fall, but he opened his eye quickly, suddenly he could see in the darkness, his eyes had adjusted, and almost everywhere he looked men were copulating. No one seemed to pay attention to anyone else except for those in their immediate group, wither it be just two or more. He felt something brush against his leg again and this time looking down he saw there were three guys getting it on right next to him. It was one of the guys long blonde hair that he had felt brush against him several times. He went to move his foot, but realized that he couldn’t because the blonde had rested his head upon it during the last brush across it. He slowly began to wiggle his toes from beneath the head, but was suddenly stopped when the blonde’s hand grabbed his ankle. The blonde man grabbing his foot raised it a little and began sucking on his toes. He was so unready for this that it sent a shock throughout his body causing his to push back against Brick even harder. “Baby, take it easy, you’ll get all you want tonight” Brick whispered in his ear. ‘I promise, anyway you want it, it’s yours.” Ty didn’t answer, but just sighed reaching back for Brick and grasping him. He

could not describe the sensations that were going through him even if he had to. He had never felt quite like this before, who would have imagined that having your toes sucked could produce such sexual tension, well that and being pressed naked against the hottest man you’ve ever met. It was just then that he realized that Brick had taken off all his clothes at some time or another and was indeed pushing back against him from the wall stark naked. He leaned back pushing down on Brick, he felt the blondes’ hands reaching up the inside of his legs, and suddenly felt wet and warm. He reached down and grabbed hold of the head between his thighs and looked down, he almost let out a blood chilling scream, but held back, it was Brick. Brick, down there? But who in the hell had he been riding all this time? He glanced over his shoulder and saw Jimmy smiling back at him. Damn he thought to himself, had this been a set-up all along? Right now it didn’t really matter much, he was well beyond the point of stopping this right now. “Your quite a piece,” Jimmy whispered in his ear. “Where’s your other half?” “Still strapped over the rail, waiting for us to return.” Brick began sliding his tongue up Ty’s body finally standing face to face with him, he leaned forward kissing him, but Ty didn’t respond at once. “You’re pissed with me?” he asked Ty. ‘I don’t know, I just don’t remember you switching places with Jimmy, that’s all. I mean I really like to know who I’m getting it on with.” “I sensed you wanted a little action, I’m sorry.” Brick took his hand, “I’m sorry,

really I am, but you did look like you were enjoying it.” “I didn’t say I wasn’t.” “Do you want to go back to your room.” “Yea, I think so, in a while,” Ty smiled at Brick. “Can I come to?” “As much as you’d like,” and with that said Ty finally kissed him back. Later after they had experimented a little more at the club and began walking back towards the Inn arm and arm again, like they had been together for years. Ty had this feeling of finally belonging to someone, a feeling he had never had before, as if this is where he was meant to be. “A penny for your thoughts,” Brick drew in in nearer to him. “I was just thinking.” “That was obvious. You going to tell me or am I going to have to do something kinky to get it out of you.” “I don’t know, I mean this has been one of the craziest nights of my life.” It’s been great actually, being with you especially. That club.” “You seemed to enjoy yourself, but somehow I’m getting a different vibe now.” “It was exciting in it’s own way, but I don’t think I’d want to be part of that scene all the time.” “Variety is the spice of life you know.” “ They do say that, don’t they. I don’t know though, I’ve grown up thinking that, but somehow as I get a little older I think that there just might be something else.” Before they realized it they were back in front of the Inn. “You still want me to stay over? I mean even if I am a dirty older man.”

“Your not that much older, nor dirtier, just more world-wise I guess you could say.” “Really!” Brick feigned being hurt by that last remark. “Man I’ve had a great time being with you and I just don’t want it to end. I’ve been hoping all along that you were going to spend the night with me. Now I seem to be killing the fact that you might have. I’m going to have to hire a cab to go back to the airport anyway, so why not stay and I can be your first fare tomorrow.” “Sure you’ll be safe with a character like me?” “I’m praying I won’t be.” “Lead the way.” “Lead you astray?” Brick laughed, as they entered the Inn and headed up the stairs to Ty’s room. “Tonight you're mine.” Brick stripped out of his clothes and was on the bed before you could have counted to five. “And tomorrows airport run is on me.” “I was intending to pay for it.” “Oh, you're going to pay for it all right, just get your ass over here.” Ty shut off the lights, quickly undressed and slid into bed and Brick’s waiting arms.
