It is believed that the 2007 economic impact could well exceed $80 million, based on an $800 per person conservative spending average. The mayor’s office, city council, police department, sanitation department, streets department and local businesses have worked together to ensure that visitors and locals will enjoy a safe Southern Decadence.

Southern Decadence Parade Sun., Sept. 2, 2pm

he 34th annual Southern Deca dence Parade celebrating Southern Decadence 36 begins at the Golden Lantern, 1239 Royal at Barracks in the French Quarter. Always starting at 2pm sharp, this year’s parade is Sun., Sept. 2. Southern Decadence Grand Marshals (SDGM) XXXIV Electra City, Guadalupe and Marcus Martinez will lead the 2007 parade. Their "official" theme is Ancient Truths, Lies & Sacrifice; colors crimson, teal and gold; and song, Beautiful Liar by Beyonce and Shakira. Since the parade has grown so much, the City of New Orleans has required a parade permit for the past nine years. Fourteen area businesses have underwritten the cost of the parade permit and fees for the police officers required for the parade. the "official" dish a good time.” --Robert King, one of the founding members of Southern Decadence t is coming again! The Official Southern Decadence celebration; that circus gone amok of a wildly aberrant, unusual, motley, slightly crazy bunch of avant garde attitudes in drag; that congerie of costumed marchers who take to the streets of the French Quarter in a route set by the Grand Marshal or Marshals on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend [late August/early September] that usually turns out to be one of the hottest of the year in this Bombay of the New WorldNew Orleans. They arrive like Asian termites hungering for pine logs in French Quarter architecture. But these strange creatures arrive mostly to imbibe of the grape; mostly to be outrageous and have fun doing it. Not even the fire from of a dragon’s breath would keep participants and watchers from assembling in the 1200 block of Royal Street on the first Sunday before

Labor Day for a celebration that has gotten bigger and more wonderfully insane each year since its casual creation in 1972. That day, usually between 10am and noon, an unknown quantity of men and women, gay and straight, begin to assemble at the corner of Royal and Barracks Streets. They will huddle on the banquette in front of a favorite gay watering hole named the Golden Lantern, the Home of Southern Decadence, there for over 35 years. They will spill out into the street. No one ever knows exactly how many will show up, but recent years have seen the numbers grow into the tens of thousands. By around noon traffic will have to slow down or detour because Royal Street will be overflowing with marchers mostly costumed in drag, scare drag and traditional drag, and any other kind of rig they can conjure up from their imaginations. And don’t forget all those gorgeous men and women, most scantily clad. You will see the playful, the whimsical, the pretty, the ugly, the satirical, the witty, and the obscene. But whatever you see, it will always be totally decadent. It’s a scene

from a technicolor Fellini film extemporaneously created. It’s a happening of habadashery fit for an LSD Alice In Wonderland. It’s a casting call for Lord of the Rings. Then, at 2pm, the Grand Marshal(s) will arrive with a following of courtiers accompanied by the squeals and screams of his/her entourage and often other noises - the sound of whistles, goose honks, castanets, washtub fiddles, conch shell blasts, homemade jazz bands, horse whinnies, tiger roars, pussy meows, and whatever else that particular group fancies as an auditory assault, or a musical instrument. When the time comes to march, the Grand Marshal(s) blows his/ her/its whistle and the whole drunken, rowdy group weaves its drunken way down the streets of the Quarter. The route is always decadent, outrageous, and, of course, includes all the Gayles bars and other favorites; it’s always an extemporaneous demonstration of cutting edge freedom of expression, a walk on the wild side, a flourish, a smile, a brave conceit of the past.

2007 Marks 36th Southern Decadence Anniversary

007 will be the 36th anniversary of Southern Decadence. This will actually be the 34th year with a grand marshal (the grand marshal selection did not begin until the third year), but Southern Decadence Grand Marshals XXXIII reigned as grand marshals two years since Decadence was cancelled in 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina (the two in 1978 were counted as grand marshals 5 & 6). However, this is actually the 34th parade (there was no parade the first year or in 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina). It all began in 1972 with a mixed going away party for Michael Evers consisting of gays, straights, blacks and whites, at Belle Reve, 2110 Barracks St. There was no parade. The first invitation read: “Ya’ll Come to the Dress Up As Your Favorite Southern Decadent Party at Belle Reve, 2110 Barracks, late afternoon, Sunday, September 3rd.” (1972) According to Southern Decadence historian and SDGM IV Robert Laurent, “Cheers to Southern Decadence! What began in 1972 as an end-of-summer party among a small group of friends has transformed itself into a Quarter-wide weekend celebration. The first costume party was a farewell to Michael Evers, who was leaving New Orleans. Now, 36 years later, his spirit, wit and sense of frivolity continue, transformed into a celebration of Laissez les bon temps rouler.” In 1973, an informal march began from Matassa’s bar to 2110 Barracks. There was no grand marshal yet. The grand marshal selection began in 1974. Clifton Webb Debuts A New Pen-and-Ink Exhibit Sept. 4 at Dillard University

he Dillard University Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition of pen-and-ink drawings and paper polychrome sculptural marquettes Curves: Paper Works - created by Clifton Webb. The exhibit will run from September 4 with an opening reception that day from 6-8pm through October 26. On view at the Samuel DuBois Cook Communications Center, 2601 Gentilly Blvd., gallery hours are Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm. Clifton Webb is an African-American artist based in New Orleans who has shown his work on a local and national basis for over 30 years. He is co-founder of the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Webb has also exhibited at the Arthur Roger Gallery, the Atlanta Arts Festival, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Chattanooga Museum of Afro-American Culture and History, Alternatives Museum, and Max Hutchinson Gallery (New York).

Dealing with Decadence

t is that time again my little sweet hearts when your Auntie Dee has to haul out her warnings again about the party week we have all come to love and hate at the same time, and always I have to remind all my children to remember to stop and take a little nourishment. Remember, man does not live by sex alone. For those of you who also accepted the extra burden of entertaining out of town guests, which of course, I always enjoy, having some cook ahead casseroles that can be popped in the microwave for easy eating is wise, because no matter how hard we try, we just can’t always sit down and dine with each other. So here are some easy fix ahead meals for all of us.

BACON AND EGG CASSEROLE This breakfast casserole can be made the day or evening before. 2 large baking potatoes, unpeeled, cubed cooked till tender, drained and cooled ¼ cup butter ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 cup milk 1 cup half-and-half 4 cups (16 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 12 large hard cooked eggs, sliced 1 pound bacon, cooked and coarsely crumbled 2 cups soft whole wheat breadcrumbs (4 slices) 3 tablespoons butter, melted Melt ¼ cup of butter in a heavy saucepan over medium-low heat, whisk in flour till smooth. Cook one minute stirring constantly. Gradually add milk and half-andhalf; cook over medium heat stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Add cheddar, Italian seasoning and pepper stirring till cheese melts. Remove from heat. Layer half each - egg slices, bacon and cheese sauce in a lightly greased 13x9 inch baking dish. Top with potato cubes, Top with remaining eggs, bacon and cheese. Combine breadcrumbs and melted butter, sprinkle evenly over casserole. Cover and chill till ready to use. Remove casserole from refrigerator and allow to stand at room temperature thirty minutes. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for thirty minutes. Yield ten servings.

EGGS FLORENTINE CASSEROLE 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, cooked and drained well 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese 1 pound pork sausage, cooked and drained 2 cups sliced mushrooms 6 green onions, chopped 2 tablespoons butter, melted 12 large eggs, slightly beaten 2 cups whipping cream 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded swiss cheese

¼ teaspoon paprika Sprinkle cheddar cheese in bottom of a 13x9” baking dish, spread spinach over cheese. Sprinkle browned sausage over spinach. Sauté mushrooms and green onions in butter over medium-high heat until done. Sprinkle sautéed vegetables over sausage. Combine eggs and whipping cream beating with a whisk until well blended. Pour egg mixture on top of sautéed vegetables. Top with Swiss cheese and sprinkle with paprika. Bake uncovered, at 350 degrees for forty minutes or until set. Yield; twelve servings.

HAM AND BROCCOLI STRATA A good make ahead dish to prepare the day before for a brunch or lunch. 12 slices white bread, crusts removed cut into small cubes 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped broccoli, thawed and drained 2 cups diced cooked ham 6 large eggs, lightly beaten 3 ¼ cups milk 1 tablespoon dried minced onion ¼ teaspoon dry mustard 3 cups (12 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese Layer bread cubes, broccoli and ham cubes in a buttered 13x9” baking dish. Combine eggs and the rest of the ingredients stirring well. Pour into dish, cover and refrigerate till ready to use at least two hours or overnight. Bake uncovered at 325 degrees for about an hour. Yield; eight servings.

PICADILLO An easy to prepare dish ahead of time can be individually ladled over yellow rice, micro waved at any time of the day this will make eight servings, but if your house is full of people coming and going you might want to double this. 2 medium onions, finely chopped 2 large green peppers chopped 2 cloves of garlic, minced 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon celery salt ½ teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce 1 (14.5 ounce) can whole tomatoes, untrained and chopped 1 (3 ounce) jar pimento stuffed olives, drained ½ cup raisins Eight cups cooked yellow rice. Cook first four ingredients in a large skillet over medium-high heat until beef is browned, stirring until it crumbles; drain. Add salt and next nine ingredients; stir well. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat and simmer thirty minutes. Serve over yellow rice.

POTATO SALAD 2 ½ pounds red potatoes 1 stalk celery, diced 1/3 cup sweet pickle relish 2 large hard-cooked eggs, sliced 2 green onions, chopped 1 cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper ½ teaspoon dry mustard

Cook potatoes in boiling water for twenty-five minutes or just until tender. Drain well and cool slightly. Peel and cube. Combine potatoes, celery and next three ingredients in a large bowl and toss gently. Combine mayonnaise and next four ingredients in a small bowl; mix well. Spoon mayonnaise mixture over potato mixture, tossing gently to combine. Serve warm or chilled. Yield seven servings. Ordinary People at the Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans

getting to the production’s praiseworthy portion, the lead actors were so good that this did not prove fatal to the show. What Piazza’s staging lacked, he made up for by guiding the actors playing the Jarretts and the psychiatrist who tries to help them to beautifully nuanced, touching performances. As he did with Lucas

rdinarily, journalism’s first rule is “Don’t bury the lead.” But I prefer to “Save the best for last” and so will quickly dispense with my reservations about the Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans’ production of Ordinary People before saluting its praiseworthy components. Nancy Gilsenan has dramatized Judith Guest’s novel about the Jarretts, a mid-Western, upper middle class family who continue to deal with the loss of their eldest child. Unlike, say, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, however, with its short unconnected scenes Gilsenan’s People never rises above a stage version of the book (or movie) to become an organically created play. Director René J.F. Piazza comRandy Maggiore, Andy LaRocca & Morrey McElroy in Ordinary People pounded matters by failing to shape the show with imaginative staging; instead, scene changes had a herky-jerky Harms in The Nerd, with the right person quality with classical music that stopped in the right role, Piazza enables his actors and started rather than allowing for to find all the complex dimensions of his/ smooth segues among home, school her character and shape them into a conand psychiatrist’s office locales. As Conrad’s father Cal, Randy Maggiore balanced precisely on the thin line that separates a parent’s caring for his child and caring too much. As an accountant better at managing numbers than his own family, Maggiore made us feel we were looking into the soul of a decent man trying to do the right thing, trying to parent as best as possible and, sadly, coming up short. Though a tad too young in the role that brought Mary Tyler Moore an Oscar nomination, Morrey McElroy was absolutely devastating as Beth, Conrad’s mother. Beth is not one to give up control of her emotions, yet McElroy let leak through the tiniest of fissures in her façade the existential torment she felt at being incapable of loving her child who is still living as much as the one who has died. As McElroy and Maggiore warred over the fate of their family, their scenes crackled with pent up tension courtesy of the script’s best material as well as their own talents. Lastly, there was Andy LaRocca as Conrad. Appearing in nearly every scene of the play, LaRocca captured every bit of this tortured young man’s alienation and desperation stemming from his (unnecessary) guilt over his involvement with his brother’s death in a boating accident. He made us feel Conrad’s pain but also conveyed the teen’s ironic sense of humor as well as his emerging hormonal impulses. Demonstrating that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, LaRocca and McElroy jibed entirely as two perfectionists destined to disappoint one another. With Berger/ Bellow helping him to find the source of his anguish, it was almost painful to watch as LaRocca gathered himself in a fetal position and bared himself emotionally, finally achieving some inner peace. This was less a performance than an opportunity to watch a troubled, multi-faceted soul be brought to life better than any reality show could do. To Gilsenan’s credit, just when we think the play will end on a hopeful note, she remains true to her characters’ pathologies and jangles an audience waiting for a happily-ever-after resolution. It may be just what this tragically dysfunctional household needs in order to move on and start healing as individuals if not as a family unit. It’s the triumph of this production’s four lead actors that by then we care enough to want to know what will happen to the Jarretts.

The Pillowman at Muriel’s Cabaret/ Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré

f as Martin (The Lieutenant of Inishmore) McDonagh posits in The Pillowman, the “first duty of a storyteller is to tell a story” then McDonagh fulfills his duty wholly and wonderfully with his newest play recently seen in Le Petit’s small theater. The Pillowman takes place in the interrogation room of a police station in a totalitarian state. Katurian, a writer, is being interviewed by two detectives. From another room he hears his mentally challenged brother screaming out. We suspect he’s being tortured. Eventually we find out that a series of child murders have occurred seemingly inspired by

the gruesome short stories Katurian has written but that have, so far except for one, been unpublished. Is the somewhat pompous Katurian responsible? Or his brother Michal? And if so, why did they do it? And what is their dark family history that caused them to turn out this way? McDonagh gives us lots of ifs and maybe’s, as his story turns upon itself with Escherian knottiness and metaphysical implications. If the tension flags a bit in the second of three acts—some of the dialog during Katurian and Michal’s lengthy scene together seems more for the audience’s benefit than the characters’—McDonagh leavens his drama with humorous lines sprinkled throughout to provide for an evening that’s challenging, thought-provoking and completely gripping. I would only argue with that “totalitarian state” setting. Once we realize that the charges at hand are criminal not political, it would seem that The Pillowman could take place anywhere. In fact, its cops’ actions might be scarier if set in any ol’ big American/European city. I mean, you don’t find torture in a democracy, right? Right??? At a running time of nearly three hours, Dane Rhodes’ direction went at a leisurely pace but nonetheless held our attention throughout. If he better illuminated the tale’s human dynamics than its metaphysical conceits, he admirably captured the fear and concomitant campfire-ghost-story-ness [continued on Main-36]

Rhodes’ vision was enhanced by the atmospheric lighting and expressionistic scenic design of Josh Palmer and Chad Talkington whose set looked as though a childhood closet had been opened and long repressed memories had tumbled out. As Katurian, Blake Balu gave a beautifully modulated performance. His hysteria seemed to come from within, complete with uncontrollably twitching fingers; you believed his dread was genuine (the firstrate special effects helped) and not actorly emoting. Balu also brought out Katurian’s self-centered determination that would put the survival of his stories above all else. And with a proud glee, his eyes lit up as he pointed out to his captors the O. Henry-like “twists” that end his tales. A few flubbed lines notwithstanding, this is a performance that, along with Ordinary People’s LaRocca, ought to be remembered at awards time next year. Despite his twinkling eyes and a physiognomy too cute for a person who’s endured what Michal has, Leon Contavesprie’s inner talents convinced us of the distorted mind, body and soul of Katurian’s brother, a troubled innocent who lives at a slight distance from reality. As the detectives charged with solving the children’s murders by whatever means possible, Bob Scully’s bad cop was very good; Robert Pavlovich’s good cop with literary aspirations, excellent. McDonagh gives their tag team interrogation scenes just enough of a comic edge to remind us of such classic pairs as Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, even Vladimir & Estragon; Scully & Pavlovich worthily played up, but never overplayed, this aspect. The Pillowman is not exactly light, summertime entertainment. But when a production is this good, its tale can be told any time.

Soulville II at Anthony Bean Community Theater

oulville II is a heartfelt cri decoeur from the inner city, an amalgam of monologs and dramatic scenes that reflect what today’s teenagers have to deal with on a day to day basis interspersed with gospel songs and modern dance numbers that offer a salve to the youths’ tremendous challenges. Written primarily by Anthony Bean and presumably taken from the real life stories of participants in his summer theater camp, Soulville II pulls no punches. There are missing fathers and too busy parents with too busy lives to pay attention to their children. Tales of drugs, alcohol and violence abound. That these kids are alive, yet alone thriving, after all they’ve gone through is a sterling testament to the resiliency of youth. Bean uses, in part, a radio call-in show for teens to discuss their problems as a framing device. Real life Q93 DJ Wild Wayne plays the host who tries to offer advice; sometimes it’s taken, sometimes a child, not quite ready to deal with it, shuts his/her cell phone and instantaneously cuts him off. Wayne is no James Earl Jones or even Oprah; given the callers’ gritty stories, responding with an almost unbelieving “Wow” may be understand-

able but it doesn’t make for piquant dialog. Still, one admires Wayne’s dedication to this project. The show begins with twenty-five 810 year olds, divided 25/75% between innocent and more knowing ones, trashtalking about things nobody I knew talked about when I was that age. Cute they are and a bunch of pros as well, sparkling with charisma and ready to light up a Broadway stage. But, man, they have been forced to grow up soooooo fast. The rest of the program features teenagers and if the music/dance numbers are not as strong as the dramatic pieces, they provide a nice counterpoint. I was tremendously impressed by the uniformly high level of acting ability of Bean’s student thespians. Among the highlights were Princey Walker as a girl whose Dad killed her Mom; Timothy Bellows whose Chauncey finds it impossible to tell the truth; Australia James as a 14year-old serving life in prison for killing her cheating boyfriend, a man she didn’t even know was 40-years-old until the trial; Bailey Gstohl as a more well-off kid who doesn’t realize how spoiled she is; Dedric Alexander as a 10-year-old who “gets the blues”; Reiana Brown whose Lisa, penned by Elise Felix, is being raised by her father; and 12-year-old Tony Felix sporting a mouthful of gold and a gun in his pocket. In the powerful ensemble section Mother’s Day, written by Marie Slade Weatherspoon, six young ladies (Dasia Bell, Angeletta Green, Chelsey London, Jade Radford, Bria Toney and Tyrianne Varnado—all flawless) described a series of mothers from hell, starting with one who had just been arrested for writing bad checks and going downhill from there. One marvels that their daughters turned out as poised as they did. In another memorable section, Father’s Day, Stephen Edmond, Daryl Lutcher and Telfry Thompson authoritatively played three aspects of one young man facing the oversize difficulties of growing up without a Dad. Picking up the story where another left off, these three actors interwove the tale seamlessly. Edmund will be leaving New Orleans soon for college; I hope we haven’t seen the last of him on stage nor his two other scenemates. Perhaps most haunting of all was the tale of 15-year-old Tyrone written by Ateja Lewis. Seduced and raped by an older aunt, he comes to find out that he has impregnated her and been infected with HIV. Haltingly enacted by Edward Buckles, it was a masterpiece of understatement that grabbed you by the throat and didn’t let go. Ironically, the only section that elicited an audible reaction from the predominantly African-American audience was when a preacher’s son admitted to Wild Wayne that he was gay. Michael Alexander portrayed Baby Boy with dignity and the response seemed one more of surprise, rather than derision, but one would think that an audience would more likely be shocked as much if not more so by tales of hatred and neglect rather than one of nascent love. Soulville II could use some trimming and shaping; the first act was about 15 minutes too long. But if Bean and Co. are willing to make some adjustments this could be a major work along the lines of Elizabeth Swados’ Runaways. The children of post-Katrina New Orleans deserve as much.

PFLAG Awards

he New Orleans Chapter of PFLAG is receiving two awards – one local, one national. In September, The Forum for Equality will honor PFLAGNO. Acclaim Awards IX sponsored by The Equality Club will honor PFLAG New Orleans with the Political Activism Award. Other awards recipients are Barbara Motley – Arts & Entertainment Acclaim Award; Rabbi Edward P. Cohn – Chair’s Acclaim Award; Senator Edwin Murray – Political Leader Acclaim Award; Dennis Woltering – Media Acclaim Award; and Project Lazarus – Community Health Acclaim Award. The gala will be held at The Astor Crowne Plaza. Ticket are available. At the National PFLAG Convention in Washington, DC in October, PFLAGNO will receive the PFLAG National Chapter Award for Outstanding Support Efforts. PFLAGNO is the first chapter to give GLBT students scholarships. We are the scholarship program that is being used by other chapters today. We also have given support to chapters smaller and less fortunate financially. PFLAGNO came back from Katrina with no meeting place and most of our members scattered. Our president’s home was under six feet of water. Yet from

Austin, she kept our people together so that we never missed giving scholarship awards. PFLAG Board Members have made themselves available as speakers at Universities, they attend the meetings and receptions of other organizations, they support the fund-raisers of other GLBT groups, they work the NO/AIDS Walk registration, they work the Gay NO Volleyball Tournament, and support the Gay Men’s Chorus while educating and supporting parents and Gay children. These are two awards well earned. President Julie Thompson will represent the chapter by accepting both of these awards on behalf of the New Orleans Chapter.

peaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited New Orleans to review the rebuilding of schools and tour the lower 9th Ward with the aim of helping residents find housing and help from the Federal Government. With thanks to teacher Daven Lewis, the partner of Fr. Michael Des Jardins, I was invited to attend the tour of Mary McLeod Bethune School and meet, if possible, Ms Pelosi.

I arrived early only to find that Pelosi, Bill Jefferson and many, many more luminaries had already started the tour. I caught up with them in the play yard that was filled with trailers and work vehicles. I followed the group through the school until I found someone that looked to be apart of the “in” group and asked for an interview. Interviews were being held at 1pm I was told. It was now 10am and at 1pm, I expected to be sitting at a card table playing bridge. So even though I am not a reporter, I thought of what my vision of a reporter would do. I caught up with the tour and watched where they were going and went in the opposite direction hoping to run face first into them. And so I did. I was asked to have a seat at the tables where the speakers were to sit. I explained that I was not someone important; I was just press. I was assured that it was okay for me to sit there. When Ms Pelosi passed me, I turned and smiled. She stopped. I introduced myself and asked what “the Party” could do for abused GLBT students. We talked about the recently passed Hate Crimes Bill and I informed her about the anti-Gay Pride Parade that was held in Nebraska each year. She was shocked. I was pleased. Before she was pulled away from me (I had perpetrated a no-no), we passed a few words about Hillary Clinton and both agreed that Hillary would make a great President for all the USA. It was the biggest smile I saw on her face while I was there. I was then asked to remove myself from the seat at the table. I’d gotten what I wanted so I agreed pleasantly. I started

for the door only to have three women in uniforms ask if I was leaving. This was interesting, I thought. They treat me badly, I walk out and that isn’t something they want to see in the press. I explained that I was shown to the wrong place and asked to leave. I was then ushered to a comfortable area in the rear of the room where a chair was brought in for me. I was really tickled at the attention and treatment. Rip has never gotten me a press pass so I could never prove that I was with the press but just saying the words, I work for an alternative life-style newspaper, gets people worried. By 11am, I was home with the story I went to get and a couple of doughnuts from the reception. I was impressed with Ms. Pelosi. The fact that she stopped to talk with me was astonishing. She could have just walked by without a word – most politicians do. She seemed genuinely concerned over the suicide rate of Gay youth and annoyed by the anti-Gay events. There is hope and I’m hoping it is with the Democrats especially Hillary & Nancy.

t isn’t often that you come across a book as riveting in detail as No Ordinary Heroes. Dr. Demaree Inglese has come up with gripping tales of perseverance and dedication to duty in one of the most unlikely places during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He puts a new spin on heroism, one that shows an amazing look at the human spirit. This true story could easily be fiction. The fact that doctors, nurses, and prisoners all faced this ordeal together is truly amazing. At the time of the storm, Dr. Inglese was the medical director of the jail – the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office or OPP – one of the six largest jails in the country. Housed here were nearly 7,000 inmates, many of them being held for capital crimes such as murder and rape. The entire complex contained thirteen buildings and spanned eight city blocks, and a part of this facility contained an infirmary housing two hundred prisoners who were seriously ill. Few people in New Orleans or in the surrounding areas really realized this part of the Crescent City existed. The decision not to evacuate before the storm and subsequent events meant that the eight doctors and thirty nurses volunteered to stay and provide medical care during the hurricane. Into all this, there were several hundred deputies, and many of the employees brought family members and pets to shelter at the jail. The situation became one of isolation when the jail was cut off from the outside world after Katrina passed through the area. They were without communication or assistance from outside the complex. Adding to this situation was the fact that electrical power had been lost and also running water. They were totally isolated and surrounded by water. Even though the situation kept going downhill, Dr. Inglese manages to portray a positive look at this situation. He does this by focusing on the courageous actions of all the doctors, nurses, and deputies who struggled to ensure the safe evacuation of over 7,000 people. They endured all this as the waters rose, supplies diminished, and inmate problems escalated. The heat of that period in August was also overwhelming, and groups of inmates eventually broke free, set fire to buildings, and threatened the staff and security people. When you consider the fact that these were desperate inmates seeking to escape, you realize that these doctors, nurses, and security personnel were in extreme danger. The storm that moved through New Orleans created another storm, one of internal dangers. Through all this, you can see the goodness of man under stress. There is one aspect of this story that shows something different, something that few books tend to expose to the public. There are six main characters in the book, and four are gay men. It is not often that gay men are pictured in such a positive way. It is definitely something to take notice of, and Dr. Inglese has done a marvelous job in telling this story.

Heroes come in all sizes and shapes, all religions and sexual orientations, but few are pictured so well as in this book where several gay men stepped in to help out under such grueling conditions. Perhaps more stories of this type will emerge. At least, Dr. Inglese has had the courage to tell such a positive story. I have said many times that this book or that book is one that I found hard to put down. This book is definitely one of those publications. I am extremely appreciative that Dr. Inglese asked me to read and evaluate this work. Through all of this, he has managed to come forth with an inspirational story about people rising about personal losses and hardships in order to help others. I find that to be amazing and encourage everyone to read this book. It is a sad tale of despair, but it is such a glorious tale of human endurance that it deserves a place in any major library or personal collection. This beautiful hard-cover edition is priced at $24.95 and available at all bookstores. It contains over three hundred pages and includes pictures of staff members, doctors, and the place where this ordeal took place. It comes from Citadel/ Kensington, and you really need to get this one. It is absolutely an amazing piece of literature and deserves to be among award-winning books of 2007.

rom the heroic of a true story, let’s now take a look at heroics of another kind. I definitely see this new hero as a very special undercover agent, and I use that description very loosely. It isn’t every day that you have this kind of hero enter your world of reading pleasure. The Hair-Raising Adventures of Jayms Blonde is hilarious, sexy, and definitely a joy to read, but I doubt if it will ever win any major awards. Jayms Blonde is a gorgeous gay guy who makes the bad guys pay. He is a hairdresser by trade and a secret agent by choice, a former U.S. Navy Seal who can use an Uzi as well as a teasing comb. With the aid of his faithful pedicurist Precious Needmoore, they lead an elite band of Pink Berets to save the world from bad hair and bad air. It just get wilder as you read along. The hair salon is at street level, and below this facility is the headquarters of STOP (Stop Terrorizing Our Planet), a secret environmental espionage agency created by Jayms and his fabulous celebrity clientele. Throw in the evil cartel ZENRON (Zealot Environmental Nazis Ruthlessly Obliterating Nature), and you have the basis for this new superhero to show what he is worth. It is outrageous, but it is fun to read. This is another hard-cover book, priced at $24.94, published by iUniverse, Inc. of Lincoln, Nebraska, written by Robert W. Cabell, and available at your favorite bookstore.

he New Orleans Bear and Bear Trapper Social Club will kick the weekend off with a Welcome to Decadence Beer Bust at Rawhide on Thursday night from 4-10pm. This event is premiering this year and I am sure that Rawhide, the Bears and Bud Light are going to go all out to get the weekend off to a great start. Stop by and say howdy, or Grrrrr, to this group of guys who have put a lot of hard work into this weekend. Friday, the Bears get the evening started with their annual Sire Ursus Contest at the New Orleans Leather Company, 2230 St. Claude Ave (right next to Cowpokes), from 6pm till 10pm. I hear there are just a few tickets left at the time I am writing this. Contact the Bears for availability. lso Friday night, the Lords of Leather, along with the Phoenix Bar, will sponsor Leather Decadence!, the largest Leather Block Party in the South. Come on over to the 2200 block on N. Rampart St. and see for yourselves from 10pm till 2am. The Lords will be hosting the night with a Beer Bust. This will also be your first opportunity to meet the judges and contestants for Mr. Louisiana Leather 2008! Phoenix Bar General Manager Clint Taylor tells me that they have invited other clubs to participate in this huge event. o is all this enough to keep you busy? Well believe me there is more. Every bar from the Quarter to the Marigny will be having specials and prizes throughout the weekend. I would like to offer a few suggestions and bits of advice to those of you visiting The Big Easy this weekend, after all, you aren’t in Kansas anymore Dorothy. First, pace yourself. It is hot and humid here in New Orleans which can be a double edged sword. While it may encourage the bearing of a bit more flesh, it can also make for an early end to your day if you aren’t a bit careful. Remember to add a bottle or two of water in among your choices of adult beverages. You will need the hydration, trust me. Get out of the heat every now and then. Take a few moments to get inside. Maybe enjoy a great meal in a local restaurant and support our local Gay and Lesbian entrepreneurs. A little cool down time and you’ll be back to the party all night long. Remember too, our bars do not close. That’s right, 24 hours a day serving you like no where else. Yes, you can take your drink with you when you leave, just make sure it is in a plastic cup – NO GLASS on the street. When Mother Nature calls, find a rest room. I know, I know, the lines are long and you really gotta go. Think in advance a bit though. Remember, you need to get out of the heat a bit anyway, right? Besides, this is not only where we come to party but we work and live here too. Our steps and doorways are not your urinals. This is also a great way to get to know the justice system here in New Orleans as the Police take offense at public urination. You could say, they take it personally and rightfully so. You really do not want a trip to Central Lock-Up and with this being a holiday weekend; court will not be held till Tuesday. That means you won’t get out till then too. Speaking of NOPD, regardless of what you may hear in the other media, they are good folks with a very serious job to do. They too have a sense of humor and do like to relax as well. But if you get on the business end of these men and women, cooperate with them. If they ask you to move on ...get your left foot in front of the other. If you get a chance though, say thanks to them for all they do for us this weekend and all others. Mostly boys and girls, have a great time here this weekend. Party all weekend, enjoy some of the best food in the world, and use a little common sense. Stay aware of your surroundings. Maybe take a taxi to avoid long walks and driving under the influence. Mostly, enjoy New Orleans and hopefully you will understand why so many of us love this place over anywhere else. Cheers!

And Then There Was One

hen it all started, there were ten contestants vying for the title of Miss Gay Louisiana America 2007-2008 at Splash on Highland Road, located near LSU. By the end of the second day, there was only one – Chelsea Delorean Divine, the reigning Miss Gay Splash America 2007-2008 who had garnered the title of Miss Gay Louisiana America 2007-2008. The first runnerup was Haley Alexander, Miss Gay Crescent City America 2007-2008. It ended with cheers from the audience, but there was a mixed reaction from around the section where I was seated. That always happens when you have such outstanding finalists. It had to have been a very close score to come up with these two individuals. The other ten contestants included: Marsheya St. Clair, Miss Gay Splash America 1st alternate; Dior Dandridge,

Miss Gay Shreveport America; A’jah St. James, Miss Gay Shreveport America 1st alternate; Anastacia Davenport, Miss Gay Vieux Carre America; Passion Armani Cassidine, Miss Gay New Orleans America; Krystina Synclaire, Miss Gay Capital City America; Nicole Foxx, Miss Gay Capital City America 1st alternate; and Amy Nelson, Miss Gay Crescent City America 1st alternate. “A Night at Twelve Oaks” was a nice theme for this contest, and Savanna Delorean made the spirit of the Old South come alive with her beautiful opening number, and the closing number was equally nice and appropriate. She has been one of the best yet to represent the state of Louisiana, and her year has been one of many wonderful memories as she graciously represented her title with dignity and charm. he Fall Semester began last week and it was back to school for all of us college students out there in Acadiana. I have been looking forward to the start of this semester for a while now, mainly because I get paid to be there, not to mention it brings a whole new group of people into Lafayette. It’s always to good to see more people in the Downtown.

he Sound Factory, Acadiana’s premier gay club, has a lot planned for the rest of the month. Aside from hosting the Mystic Krewe of Apollo’s “Mr. And Miss Apollo Competition,” they are also showing their appreciation for returning students by giving a dollar off all regular priced Big Girl cocktails when they show their current college ID. She was really a super nice individual, and I enjoyed meeting her and watching her perform for the crowd who came to Splash for the contest. One of the best emcees of any event I’ve attended just happened to be in the exciting Miss Gay America 2000, Catia Lee Love. Her charm was apparent, and her performances were definitely outstanding. She managed to grab your attention whether she was performing or just announcing the contestants and other entertainers. And there were plenty of other entertainers too. Some have been around for a number of years, but they still charmed the crowd with their performances. These included: Victoria Valentine, a former Miss Gay Louisiana America now claiming the title of Miss Gay Mississippi America; Jessica Daniels, Miss Gay Louisiana America 1999; Maya McNeil, Miss Gay Louisiana America 2006; Dominique Delorean, Miss Gay Louisiana 2005; Carrione Synclair, Miss Gay Louisiana America 1997; Tiffany Alexander, Miss Gay Louisiana America 1991, 1993; and, of course, state pageant owner Raquel Chevallier, Miss Gay Louisiana 1996 and also going on to win the Miss Gay America title in 2005. The one person I did miss at this event was the ever beautiful and talented Miss Nicole Dubois, Miss Gay America 2006. One of the nice things too about the program was the tribute paid to the memory of Asya Alexander, Miss Gay Louisiana America 2002. In fact, that was the last year I judged this contest, and I was very impressed with this individual. You can tell a lot about an individual when you talk with them at length, and I can assure that this was a fine human being. I remember the night well. I noted this year that the judges were also quite charming. I was seated on the front row right behind Alvin Coleman of Houston. You may recall him as Victoria Versace. Of course, I had my hormones on the rise with the fine, fine head judge Rodger Dimick of Baltimore, Maryland. He owns a big club up there, but I saw him as this unusually sexy hunk of a man. Even though I didn’t get to meet him, I saw far beyond the judging potential of this beautiful man. The other judges were equally nice, namely Todd Darst, Terry Parker, and Edward Robicheaux. I have to say that Edward was also a former acquaintance who may have aged, but the aging is definitely with perfection. Raquel, along with Chris Wilderman,

are co-promoters of the MGLA organization. Luis Sosa is the MGLA graphic designer and designed the program, and Roy LeCompte is the MGLA webmaster. Terry Eason and Larry Tyger, co-owners of the national group, were also in attendance, and it was nice meeting both of them. Miss Gay America 2008 will be held at the Holiday Inn – Airport Memphis. The dates are October 17 – 21, 2007. “One Night in Hollywood” is the theme, and more information can be obtained at www.missgayamerica.com or by phone at 901.603.4838. I have to also say a few words about someone else here. That would be the one and only Ramona Leger, Miss Gay America 1995. She passed away before the end of her reign, but she will always remain in my memory as one of the outstanding winners of all time.

And He Was Sexy Straight

always enjoy being with everyone and observing the latest trends in fashions and learning what is going on with the youth of today. That was definitely true at Splash this week. You can learn a lot about people by keeping in the background and watching the actions of those around you. Of course, when you know the individuals, it is easy to come to a conclusion on how nice they are, how hot they are, or just how you enjoy their friendships. I guess this is the joy of writing and photographing individuals for Ambush. It gives me the opportunity of explaining how these people not only mingle within my own life but the way they interface with others. I hear their conversations as I walk around. I talk with various ones and get a better understanding of their daily activities. I see the hard-working and studious ones, and I see the false personalities yet sometimes true personalities of those trying to pretend to be something or someone they are not. It is a lesson of observing how people fit in or attempt to fit it. There are winners, and there are losers. It is easy to spot the difference, and sometimes it is embarrassing to see some try so hard to be a part of the action, never apparently realizing how they are perceived by others. Then again, perhaps they know. Being true to self is important. I see the goodness of Stephen, Ty, Lance, Jimmy, Mia, Dan, both Davids, Michael, Joy, Johnny, Aaron, and others, but this is because I have known them for so long, [continued on Expose-9]

However, brief encounters are different, and they offer a challenge of getting to understand them better and perhaps even forming different opinions at future meetings. It’s all a part of the observation game. That is why it was a little different with Grant. I hadn’t met him before, but he immediately came across as a sincere and honest individual, someone who didn’t fit in with the surroundings but accepted the surroundings with an openness not seen in lots of those among the younger generation. He is part of a growing trend of those who accept yet stand aloof without showing their stature openly. With piercing brown eyes, curly black hair, amazing smile, a soothing voice, fantastic muscle tone, broad shoulders that showed how he cared for his appearance, and a great wit in conversation, he stood out, way above others around him. His reason for being in the crowd was work, an assignment he hadn’t wanted, but he accepted it because he was expected to cover a story through pictures. Watching him was enjoyable. Seeing his work ethic was delightful. Hearing about his youthful endeavors was definitely the highlight of an evening of work and pleasure. Others could take lessons from the goodness he exhibited, the openness he showed, and the excellence of his character. Grant stood tall in this setting. He is straight, but definitely not narrow in his acceptance of others. If everyone could be like him, the world would be a much better place to live. I wish him well in his work and

in his future endeavors. He is a deserving young man with a bright future ahead of him.

And The Beat Goes On

had the pleasure of meeting more nice people during the past two weeks. When I stopped off at George’s, Michael pointed out his mother and sister who were at the bar that day. I made it a point to go over and talk with them. It has been evident over the past few years that I consider Michael a wonderful individual, and it was nice to see where the excellence in the human spirit originated. There is much to be gleaned in chance meetings, especially if you know about any given situation in advance of a meeting. It’s a long way from Montana, but because of a treasured son, Baton Rouge opened up its heart and accepted these two ladies. Life is good when shared, and Michael has proven that much of his strength lies within the very heritage from which he came. It was a pleasure meeting them. I ran into Paula at Hound Dogs. It had been quite some time since I saw her, but when meetings like this happen, it brings back lots of memories. I usually enjoy my trips to Hound Dogs because I not only enjoy being with Jeannie but it is a pleasure to be around Joy when she is bartending. When you have known people for so long, you sometimes accept them on unconditional terms, and this is definitely the case with Jeannie and Joy. Some Pointers on Decadence

elcome one, welcome all, to the thirty sixth annual Southern Decadence celebration. For those of you whom have never been to “The City That Care Forgot”, here are a few helpful hints on how to adjust to the freedoms you may be encountering for the first time.

Drinking

nlike most all other cities on this planet, New Orleans is a town where no place really has to ever close, mainly I’m talking clubs and bars. Things to keep in mind about this are really rather simple, where you might go out around nine or ten o’clock in your hometown and head back three or four hours later, it’s not a bad time to do so, this isn’t necessarily so in new Orleans. You can enter many places at eight pm while the sun is still shining and leave at eight twenty while it is still out, and rather than have spent twenty minutes inside dancing your but off, you have actually been at it for twelve hours and twenty minutes. In reality it is the next morning. Not me, you say. I say, yes you. You’d be surprised just how fast the time can fly, while you're downing some cocktail or beer, you're riding a high-energy wave, and you have spotted the man of your dreams swirling around the dance floor just out of your reach. Partying on down in New Orleans takes quite a bit of getting use to, and although we are probably the most liberal city in the entire South, we do have laws against public drunkenness, that can be and sometimes are strictly enforced. That is not to say the our law enforcement is to strict, as long as you don’t fall two or three times on your way out the door, you’ll probably get by them safely. Just remember to drink slowly and pace yourself, don’t try shooting those little pucker drinks every ten or so minutes. If you have a need to always have a drink in your hand you can always alternate a bottle of water or a plain juice in your hand between the harder stuff. Remember, you don’t have to keep pace with the locals drink for drink, we are a hardy drinking bunch, we are not really just a town of amateur alcoholics. We have had years of training, we are consummate professionals. Besides we absolutely adore our out of towner’s and you're sure to get laid anyway, it’s just a lot more fun doing so if you can remember at least a little bit of the details of the encounter. Maybe even the name of whom you did it with. Or at least where.

Eating

s New Orleanians, the one thing that we never forget to do is eat. We are always sure to take food breaks even during our three and four days drinking festivals like Mardi

Gras and Decadence. Food is important to everyone, it is what keeps us going and the lack of it can have horrible consequences. Make sure you set time aside to get your proper nourishment, and not just try to exist on a liquid diet for the three or four days you’ll be visiting us. New Orleans is world famous for is restaurants and cuisine, as well as its clubs and cruising. Every restaurant is gay-friendly especially at Decadence, but there are a few that are run by and cater to our brothers and sisters year round. Petunias on St. Louis Street; Mona Lisa on Royal; Meauxbar Bistro on Rampart, Krystal Burger, Clover Grill and Quartermaster on Bourbon; Tomatillo’s on Esplanade; Bywater Bar.B.Que on Dauphine; and Marigny Perks on Burgundy. Just keep this thought in mind, you will definitely be able to party longer and have a much better time if you eat a good balanced meal every four or five hours. Now I’m not suggesting you over eat, just eat sensible, don’t skip meals. Take time out from the party, it will still be going when you return.

Urinating

ou have all heard the old adage, we don’t swim in your toilets, please don’t pee in our pool, well that goes for our street too. This is really one really big issue with the law enforcement here. First of all, in order to do such a thing you really have to expose yourself. Secondly, since Hurricane Katrina blew everybody’s skirts up, New Orleans has hired a new contractor to keep the French Quarter clean and stop the odor problems we have had in the past. Truth is, it has never smelled better nor looked cleaner, saying it clearly, the guy has done a great job, and to top it off he’s a real cutie. So don’t make his job any harder ...don’t pee in our streets. Now raise your right hand to your heart and pledge in unison; “We did not come here to pee in the streets, we will use provided outhouses and not the sidewalks, alleyways, doorways or any dark corner. Mainly because we don’t want to spend our vacation in jail, where we will have to pee in front of everyone wither we like them or not.

Exposure

his is a hard subject for me to approach, if you pardon my pun, because personally I find nothing wrong with any of it. If I had my way, no one would be forced to wear anything, anytime if they didn’t want to do so. But of course, I’m just a grey haired horny old bitch no one is going to listen to. The law clearly states that it is against the law to expose one‘s private parts in public. Private parts seems to only mean penises, tits seem to get by even with nipples flying in the wind. Occasionally, a cat may end up getting it‘s owner arrested, not as quick as a penis will. But one thing we can enjoy, which I do of course, is a well shaped rear. Just as long as the road in is covered, you can flaunt it. Seriously many times you can get away with a quick flash or two, just be

careful and be aware of who is around you. If you are more or less surrounded with like minded souls, you more than likely may get away with it. Here I should point out if you're going down the street with your rod trolling for something good to come along expect the boys who come following you to be dressed in blue. If you do end up in jail don’t expect to get out until Decadence is over, cause that’s just the way they have it set up. So keep your pecker in your pants. If you really want to see it all hanging out - legally that is catch NAKED BOYS SINGING at the MARIGNY THEATRE.

Pot

tried smoking it once, but the handle got caught in my throat, old joke, showing my age I suppose. I admit almost everyone whom I grew up with tried it more than once, but none of us ever inhaled ...RIGHT !!!! ...Sure you’ll smell a lot of it just about anywhere you walk in the Quarter, drifting out to you on the gently summer breezes luring you with her aroma. Just a reminder that lighting up in public is still against the law here as is many other states and no matter how great it makes the city smell or how wonderful you feel smoking it. Mary Jane will gladly waltz with you right on down to Central lockup. She’ll fill up your dance card right on through the celebration on the streets.

Recreational Drugs

his is one area I really don’t care to express a personal opinion on, I really have none. To each of you, it is a choice which you have to personally make. Just because you are on vacation, and Decadence is considered a circuit event and facing facts we all know what that means, doesn’t mean to alter your mind into a non-thinking state. If you do partake, and those who do, know to whom I speak, keep in mind being in an altered state in pubic has definite disadvantages. As with alcohol, don’t expect our city’s finest to come looking for everyone with a hint of it on their breath, but if you are showing definite signs of partying to excess do expect to be questioned. And for your own sake, don’t carry anything with you, no matter how sly you make think you are, someone else may be a little slicker. Possession carries severe penalties and you just may find yourself spending a lot more time in our city that you would like. Remember no matter how fab you are, non of you are Paris. For those who are novices, this is no time to accept or try anything new just for the excitement of the adventure. Remember, you have no idea what you may be ingesting, to start with, let alone how your body may react to it. This advice goes out even to the pros, know your source. Play hardy, but play it safe.

In Closing

n no way do I want to put a damper on the big party, after all that is why you all came in the first place. But, as I did, many years ago upon first returning as an adult to this city, I let my hair down foolishly in public and paid the consequences. I don’t want that to happen to you. Remember, you can get away with more indoors than on the public streets anytime here, in the City That Care Forgot, especially during this period, our special

I can’t even count the number of years I’ve known them, but they really haven’t changed that much, just mellowed with age. Now as the owners of a new home here in Red Stick and another home up in Mississippi, they are beginning to reap the results of years of hard work, something they have mastered extremely well. The same could be said of Richard and Guy. I suppose I’ve known them even longer, but I’m not even sure of this. Time has a way of making the past merge with the future in interesting ways. It also has a way of bringing about an understanding of people by knowing their past histories. It is a story of lives moving along and meeting another day with pride and dignity. Cory and Jeff have also maintained a unique sense of importance within the community. Their business offers a place for everyone to gather and enjoy themselves. They have become an integral part of the Red Stick scene, and they constantly seek to improve not only their business but their very livelihood as well. It is a good sign when you can share and support in the way they have done over the past few years. I find that to be a special gift of the human spirit.

And Time Moves On

ith football season upon us, we have a chance to gather at our favorite bars to watch the games and be with friends or we can enjoy gatherings at private homes. It is a time for forgetting but also a time for enjoyable encounters. When fall arrives, we have a lot to look forward to, like the beginning of a new period in our lives, full of hope and a desire to achieve new and important goals. We all have the chance to help in improving our image and importance on the face of this planet. As we move along into the following holiday period, I trust that everyone will enjoy the activities and at the same time play safe. Remaining happy is good, but keeping a firm hand on reality is the only way to completely stay out of harm’s way. It is my wish that this period of time will bring forth a new togetherness within the community and show the world that acceptance is far better than the alternative.
