try for nearly two decades as producer and talent scout. Known and respected by most of the major labels for his expertise in a variety of musical genres, Alago discovered Metallica and worked with a diverse group of artists that includes Michael Feinstein, Johnny Rotten, White Zombie and Nina Simone. "Working with the incomparable Nina was my finest hour," says Alago, speaking of their work together on the critically acclaimed album A Single Woman, the singer's last recording. Alago left the music business in the summer of 2003 to concentrate on another life-long passion—photography. Working initially with a Polaroid camera, Michael began a series of stark male portraits that is still ongoing. Many of the images on his website are reproduced from the Polaroid's from this early period of work. This collection of friends, models and bodybuilders indeed boast the muscularity, tattoos, and attitude that define this particular male subset, but the images also bear Alago's distinctive stamp of irreverent heat.

Bourbon Street Homes To Open For Tour Oct. 14

A

collection of Creole and Victorian homes, along with their courtyard gardens, will open for the annual Treasures of Bourbon Street House Tour on Sunday, October 14 from 1 to 5pm. The event is sponsored by the Historic Bourbon Street Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes the residential heritage of Bourbon Street and spotlights the fact that in addition to its storied nightlife, Bourbon Street can claim some of New Orleans’ most outstanding

1218 Bourbon Street on Treasures of Bourbon Street House Tour

homes. The street was the premier residential address of Old New Orleans and was named for the French royal family. Tickets are $15 and will be sold on the day of the tour at 804 Dumaine St. and 1452 Pauger St. Tickets must be purchased by 3:30pm. Houses located on or just off Bourbon Street that will be on view include: An unusual Creole cottage at 815 Dumaine St. with a front door that opens onto a side piazza in the Charleston style. The dormered cottage is the home of art consultant Arlene Karcher and its contents include a collection of primitive art. The courtyard gardens of Judith Ann Hartwell at 818 Ursulines St. feature lush plantings in two gardens, one behind the main house and the other behind a rear dependency. A quaint wooden gate leads to the second garden. A raised Victorian cottage at 1218 Bourbon St. is the future retirement home of Robert White and Kathi Metzgar of Dallas, Texas. Unusual for Bourbon Street, the house is set back from the sidewalk and has a large magnolia tree in front. The home’s furnishings include European pieces. The building at 1243 Bourbon St. was originally a corner Creole cottage but in the 1880s it was Victorianized and a second story added. It is now the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowen and the large ground floor space that was the store is now filled with American Empire antiques, old lamps and cozy over-stuffed sofas and arm chairs. On the wall hang old prints and oil paintings of French Quarter scenes. The house at 1452 Paugar St. (where Bourbon Street ends and curves to become Pauger Street) is a 135-year-old side hall Victorian cottage with a two-story rear wing. The home of Sammy Levy, the structure has been adapted for modern living. For information about the house tour, call 504-524-3621.

Boswell Sisters Centennial Celebration to Mark Connee Boswell’s 100th birthday

T

he Boswell Sisters Centennial Celebration commemorates the music and lives of the Boswell Sisters, a national singing sensation in the 1920s and ‘30s whose unique musical stylings influenced legendary singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, The Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Wynonna Judd. The four-day happening includes live music performances and labs, a documentary short, and a series of seminars that covers the Boswell Sisters contributions to New Or-

leans music and their influence on jazz and harmony – and Connee Boswell, the most famous of the sisters, whose musical career extended into the 1960’s. The celebration runs Friday, November 30 – Monday, December 3 in New Orleans at various locations. December 3, marks the 100th birthday of Connee Boswell. Connee died in 1976 at age 68. With her sisters, Martha and Helvetia “Vet” Boswell, she performed in the 1930’s as The Boswell Sisters and became a highly influential singing group via recordings, radio and movies. By the time Connee retired in 1963, she and her sisters had recorded more than 300 songs, sold 70 million records and changed American popular music forever. However, over the years, the impact of the Boswell Sisters blended harmonies and unique arrangements has been overlooked. Live performers include the Pfister Sisters, Shout Sister, The Stolen Sweets, YazooZaz and Jan Shapiro, in addition to an array of distinguished speakers. Organized by the Boswell Sisters Centennial Committee, the Centennial is made possible by a grant from The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc., and partnerships with the Louisiana State Museum, The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, and the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies at the University of New Orleans. clubs & krewes by Douglas Minich, New Orleans E-mail: nolaclubrptr@yahoo.com

W

hat a weekend! Congratulations to the Lords of Leather and to the Crescent City Outlaws, both for great times. The Outlaws held their annual run Jailbreak 7: Escape to Las Vegas from September 28 – 30. Outlaws' Mina, Rich, Kevin, Nan and Eric did a great job putting together a weekend full of fun. Sure there was plenty of eating and drinking but more than that, was the obvious friendship of all those in attendance. I can attest to there being run participants from as far away as Minnesota with clubs from Chicago, Iowa, Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis and beyond. Quite a crowd to come here to the Big Easy. The weekend started with a welcome party at Cowpokes, the Outlaws home bar, with food provided by Bywater Mike of Bywater Bar.B.Que fame, and Mona Lisa Restaurant. Saturday, the Outlaws had a full day scheduled from breakfast being served at JohnPauls on Elysian Fields, lunch at Cowpokes, and a trip to the Aquarium of the Americas in the afternoon. The formal banquet was held Saturday evening at 5 Happiness in the Imperial Room. If you haven’t been to 5 Happiness, you are missing out on the best Chinese cuisine in New Orleans! After the banquet the Outlaws presented awards in thanks for the support they have received from many, many in attendance. Sunday again started with breakfast with a wind down and open microphone session after lunch. From the parts of the weekend I was able to attend, it was obvious that all in attendance had a great time. If you have ever had weekend guests and know how tough that can be, imagine having 80+ weekend guests. It is a huge amount of work to put a weekend run together and all of the Outlaws deserve a big round of applause, they really did a great job. All this and they also hosted the Fall MACC meeting to boot. Also, congrats go to Bywater Mike as he did an incredible job of feeding the crowd all weekend. It is always good to see Michael in town too! I can guess that all the Outlaws are taking a big sigh of relief this past week but I also know they are not ones to lay too long. They are already getting ready for Jailbreak 8 next September. They also have their annual Ho Down coming up November 17 at Cowpokes. Keep an eye out for details on this fun event.

T

he Lords of Leather held a pool party at the Lions Inn Bed and Breakfast on Sunday, September 30th with the theme Flying Down to Rio. Even Carmen Miranda made a surprise appearance courtesy of Lord Alan. Food was a plenty with grilled chicken, black beans, salsa, and more. A keg was tapped and there were some great frozen slushy drinks, aka daiquiris. All this in the wonderful setting of the Lions Inn. Special thanks to Lions Inn proprietor's Floyd and Stuart for being such gracious hosts! Now I can’t tell everything that went on

there but all the attendees and guests reportedly had a great time. Awards for Teeniest Thong, Best Tan Line and a special award of Ms. Fernando Llamas were presented as well as a 50/50 Raffle. Congratulations to Lord Gary and all the others for a job very well done. Find out more about the Lords on their web site www.lordsofleather.com. trodding the boards by Patrick Shannon, III E-mail: nedcat@earthlink.net

The Best Little Whorehouse

T

his King, Masterson, Hall collaboration is on the boards at Le Petit Theatre under the bright and cheerful direction of Derek Franklin and Sonny Borey. This popular musical with the honkey tonk/C&W score has become a favorite with regional theatres and it certainly was the night I attended with a nearly sold out performance. Good women and actresses love to play bad women and whores and they seem to do it with such wicked glee. Think of this show and Cabaret, both full of sleazy whores. And audiences seem to love to watch them play these roles. Ponder this a while. However, there is not a weak woman or whore in this burnished production. It’s a highly polished rendering and once again we must praise the shining work of Franklin and Borey and a splendid cast, male and female; all have brought the ninety first season of Le Petit into being with a lively and entertaining show. Karen Hebert is a star in every meaning of the word playing the role of Mona Stangley, the Madam of this little “chicken ranch” establishment. Ms. Hebert makes an entrance that can only be described as a moment of magnificent brightness and brilliance as she enters stage right on the top level of the 2 level set, dressed all in a white bat wing cape with long flared leg trousers split on either side up to her thighs. Looking like a movie star (when their were real movie stars) her red hair flames above the pearlescent whiteness of her face and ensemble as she stands there under a white spot for a few seconds. It can best be described as a Queen’s Dream of an Entratura. Ms. Hebert is at the zenith of her theatrical endeavors and she illumines the stage from that moment on, singing, dancing and acting with grace and charm. She is beautiful and talented. Talk about an operatic entrance. How lucky we are to have such a gifted woman in our town! Then the have the handsome, lanky, sexy Richard Hutton playing her romantic interest as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd. He does a splendid job using his beautiful singing voice with great effect. Lara Grice was sublime as Doatsey Mae. Christopher Lloyd Shaw was over the top funny in the role of Melvin P. Thorpe. Dane Rhodes claimed the entire stage whenever he was on as Governor C. J. Scruggs. Joan C. Spraggins as Jewel, took the house by storm when she belted out her solo number and Jessie Terrebonne as Angel, one of the whores, was a very believable delight as was Angela Papale as Shy, the youngest and most inexperienced member of the ladies in the house. I think I counted 25 performers in this big and wonderful cast and each actor/ actress was marvelous. What an amazing cast! The clever solid two level set was by Chad Talkington, the lively musical direction by Dereck Franklin, and the splendid choreography by Karen Hebert, with fine

lighting by Earl H. Lennie III. Y’all go on down to Le Petit and have a real ho-down or ho-up time. This show has high production values and should not be missed. It really shines.

The Breach

I

f you missed The Breach, Southern Rep’s cutting edge production of an original play by Catherne Filloux, Tarell McCraney and Joe Sutton “about Katrina, the Gulf, and our nation,” you missed one of the most effective dramatic and theatrical interpretation of the epic tragedy of hurricane Katrina’s effect on our town and the Gulf Coast yet produced. Considering the dramatic stage craft created by the authors, this play almost captured the nearly impossible elements of this great tragedy fusing the theatrical elements of poetic vision, myth and mystery and human suffering. However, I am still waiting for some masterful playwright to capture the overwhelming, illusive, and deeply tragic elements of this apocalyptic event within the parameters of a theatrical concept whether it be traditional and linear or outre and mind boggling “out there” in concept. In this play the authors have almost succeeded. Five actors play up to three different roles with one actor playing one, and they all do so fantastically well. Lance Nichols does the role of Charlie, Chorus #2 and his major role as a father, Pere Leon, who attempts to come to terms with his sons private life and falls upon his Christiana beliefs for support; Kenneth Brown plays the seemingly errant son; Kesha Bullard does the role of Quan, spirit of Water, Nurse, Poet and Chorus #2, Troi Bechet does the roles of an older Quan, Woman, and Linda; Bob Edes, Jr. plays Mac and Chorus #4, and Sean Patterson plays Lynch and Francis. They all perform with very professional abilities and with touching and convincing dignity as they act their parts on a simple but stunning set which allows them to either stand and lie on a slanting rooftop and walk from it into a pool of real water surrounding it. The constant splash and gurgle of water caused by the action of the characters walking or falling into the pool adds a powerful dimension to the true theme of this script, that water can both renew and kill, can be palatable or poisonous. It also allows for the actors to created heart breaking images of bodies drowned and floating. This marvelous set was designed by Takeshi Kata. It allowed water to become the most important character of this script, which is what the destruction of hurricane Katrina in reality was all about. Excellent lighting by Bill Liotta, sound by Eric Shim as well as original music, and costumes by Paule LeMasson were tremendous assets to the ambiance and theatricality of this fine production which was faultlessly directed by Ryan Rilette. We all know more or less what the plot was about, and this fine play almost cap-

A Few of My Favorite Things

T

hough I am no longer working in the restaurant business, I continue to develop new recipes from time to time at home, especially when I invite a friend or two over. Sometimes I strike gold, other times the dishes seem to resemble others I have done in the past, but almost all of them turn out eatable. That is not to say that on an occasion or two they have been down right awful. Desserts to me, now that I am a full fledged diabetic are among my favorite challenges. Today I shall start with a new favorite or two of mine.

BROCCOLI & AVOCADO SALAD 1 ½ pounds young, tender broccoli 1 ripe avocado 1 tablespoon lemon juice. ½ cup chopped pecans spring mix salad greens Remove the broccoli florets from the large stems. In a sauce pan with boiling salted water cook the florets for about three minutes. Drain and cool under running water. Cut avocado in half, remove seed and cube. Sprinkle with lemon juice. Combine avocado, broccoli, and pecans in a small bowl. Place a generous portion of greens on a salad plate and top with the broccoli mixture. Top with Hazelnut Vinaigrette dreading.

HAZELNUT VINAIGRETTE DRESSING ½ cup hazelnut oil 3/4 cup olive oil ½ cup hazelnuts, roasted and skinned 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1 teaspoon thyme, finely chopped 1 egg white ¼ teaspoon white pepper

Combine all ingredients in a food processor. Process until well blended.

CRABMEAT IMPERIAL 1 pound crabmeat (picked over shells removed) 1/2 cup scallions, finely chopped ½ cup bell pepper, finely chopped ¼ cup chopped pimentos 1 egg yolk 1 teaspoon dry mustard 2 tablespoons paprika 1 cup mayonnaise (recipe follows) ¼ cup parmesan cheese ¼ cup bread crumbs Salt and pepper to taste In a large bowl combine the crabmeat, scallions, bell peppers, pimento, egg yolk, paprika, and ½ cup mayonnaise. Stir, mixing well and salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the crabmeat mixture equally into one cup baking dishes, cover with the remaining mayonnaise. In a small bowl mix together parmesan cheese and bread crumbs. Sprinkle tops of cups with cheese and bread crumb mixture. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about ten minutes or until hot and bubbly. MAYONNAISE: 2 egg yolks ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon lemon juice ½ teaspoon dry mustard Pinch of cayenne 2 cups cooking oil 2 tablespoons boiling water Combine the egg yolks, salt, lemon juice, dry mustard, and cayenne in a mixing bowl; beat with and electric mixer or whisk until slightly thickened, about five minutes. Add one cup of oil, one teaspoon at a time, beating constantly until mixture becomes a thick emulsion. Add the remaining cup of oil, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time. When all of the oil is incorporated, beat in two tablespoons of boiling water. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

CORN PUDDING 9 ears fresh corn ¼ cup scallions, thinly chopped ¼ cup chopped pimentos 4 large eggs ½ cup half and half 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder 1/3 cup butter 2 tablespoons Splenda 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper Remove and discard husks and silk from corn. Cut off tips of corn kernels into a bowl, scrape milk and remaining pulp from

cob with a paring knife to measure three cups. Set corn aside. Combine eggs, half and half, and baking powder, stirring well with a wire whisk. Melt 1/3 cup butter in a large saucepan over low heat; add sugar and flour stirring until smooth. Remove from heat; gradually whisk in egg mixture. Stir in the corn. Pour corn mixture into a greased 1 ½ quart casserole. Bake uncovered, at 350 degrees for forty to fortyfive minutes or until pudding is set. Drizzle with one tablespoon melted butter; sprinkle with ground pepper. Broil 1 ½ inches from heat for about two minutes or until golden brown. Yield: six servings

TROPICAL LIME CHEESECAKE CRUST: 1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs ¼ cup (1/2 stick) margarine, melted ¼ cup Splenda 2 packages (8 ounce) cream cheese softened 1 cup Splenda 4 eggs ½ cup sour cream 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 teaspoons lemon zest Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Spray bottom of spring form pan lightly with veg-

Thoroughly Modern Millie

S

tyle rather than substance is the happiest element to be found in a musical such as Thoroughly Modern Millie, the latest show to bring lots of sweet sugary escapist nonsense to the patrons of Rivertown Repertory Theatre. It’s a typical formulaic musical in which all things come to a happy ending. It’s one of those precious yet enjoyable “office musicals” like Pajama Game and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. To wit: Millie arrives in Manhattan from Salinas, Kansas. She wants to become a thoroughly modern woman and marry for money rather than love. It’s circa 1920, New York is full of flappers, jazz, and illegal booze and “modern women.” No sooner is Millie on the streets of the Big Apple than her suitcase, her purse, and one shoe is snatched and she is now without anything. Desperate for help, she trips a young guy rushing by and it’s love among the skyscrapers. They hate each other at first, but you know how these plots go. He gets rid of her by giving her the name of a hotel that caters to young women in need. She goes there. The hotel keeper is an evil Asian woman who drugs young ladies for the white slave trade if they are all alone in the world. And so on. It really does not matter. Plot and subplot in musicals like this are as inane as a high school crush description in the diary of an adolescent. And the music of Jeanine Tesori and lyrics of Dick Scanlan though zippy and light are forgettable even in the recorded score used by the director for the cast rather than a live orchestra. Inane or not, the familiar story lends itself to some wonderful singing and dancing and some excellent direction by Gary Rucker. Rucker gives us a crisp well paced song and dance entertainment that’s just splendid but a bit too long.

etable pan spray. In a medium bowl, stir together graham cracker crumbs, margarine and Splenda. Press mixture into bottom and up sides of spring form pan. Bake eight to ten minutes or until lightly golden brown. Remove from oven and cool completely. Reduce heat to 250 degrees. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in Splenda; mix well. Add eggs, sour cream, lime juice and zest; mix well. Pour into prepared crust. Place shallow pan of water on bottom rack of oven. Place spring form pan on a cookie sheet, place on middle rack in the oven. Bake one hour and fifteen minutes. Turn off oven, leave door to the oven closed, allowing the cheese cake to remain in heated oven for one hour. Remove and allow cooling to room temperature. Refrigerate for at least two hours. If desired, garnish with whipped cream and thin lime slices before serving. Yield: 12 servings. Well my little ones, I sincerely hope you’ll try these new recipes and that you enjoy them as much as I do. You may contact me via this publication. Until next time around, hope you enjoy everything you eat. Svelte and impeccable in the lead role as Millie Dillmount, Kelly Fouchi shines and glows under the spotlight. Handsome Rich Arnold as her love interest, Jimmy Smith, is right up there with her, his burnished stage presence gleams and his polished tenor voice is like silver sparkling above the recorded orchestral sounds. Karen Ann Cox is pretty and sings and dances as well as the leads in her role as the secretly super rich Miss Dorothy Brown. Vatican Lokey is a study in perfection as he brings excellence and high comedy to the role of Trevor Graydon. Leslie Limberg was more than memorable in her role as the zipped out Office Manageress, Miss Flannery, a woman with a crazy hair do. Tracey E. Collins is a darling delight with a perfect sense of timing in the evil yet comedic role of the faux Asian lady, Mrs. Meers. She’s a real scene stealer along with her two Chinese kidnappers, T. Joe Seibert as Ching Ho and Kyle Daigrepont as Bun Foo who were excellent and funny in their parts. Staci Robbins as Muzzy Von Hossmere, the “older actress role” in this little pastiche of theatrical conventions was more than competent and a knockout in her first big solo Only In New York. She has a strong singing voice but I just wish she would let go and really use it as I know she can. Come on Muzzy, let it rip. Use ALL that style and class and sass I know you can. With absolutely gorgeous “flapper” costumes by Linda Fried; somewhat adequate set pieces by Chris Adams and adequate lighting by Shawn Ramagos, this show does entertain. Except for the wobbly elevator, one of several set pieces that just don’t work esthetically or otherwise. And what is more annoying and a true mark of amateur regional community theater than NOT MASKING THE WINGS. This seems to be director Rucker’s directorial signature: allowing actors to be seen parading back stage in full costume like a Fifth Avenue Easter Parade is totally disconcerting. Nothing breaks a scene or

effery had just arrived home from work; it was just about six fifteen as he glanced at his watch. He was home just about the same time every evening, he silently laughed to himself, he was such a creature of habit, and he had no idea why he even glanced at his watch, but he did. His apartment was small, even by New York standards. He remembered when he had first read about it. A four room loft in the village, the price seemed low for what was offered he had thought at that moment. He hurried down here to see it, praying all the way that it wouldn’t be rented by the time he arrived, and it wasn’t. To be actually frank upon seeing the property, it didn’t seem all that great of a deal. There were four rooms, allright, if in fact one could call oversized closets rooms. The bath was small to say the least, it reminded him of the ones you encountered on the cruise ships in the inside cabins. It had just enough room to turn around in; you could sit on the john and brush your teeth over the sink at the same time. That’s just how tiny the bath room was. The kitchen was almost non-existent, just maybe half a foot larger than the bathroom, it was, he believed at one time a small walk-in closet, as it sat just under the spiral staircase that led up to the sleeping loft. The loft itself wasn’t half bad and overlapped about two thirds of the rooms below it. There was plenty of room for his king-sized bed up here along with the tall chest of drawers, the matching dresser and side tables. By carefully arranging the furnishings he was able to get his favorite lounging chair and reading floor lamp in it as well. To the outsider it may have looked a bit too much on the furnishings, but it worked well for him and in fact felt very homey. It was the main room downstairs just inside the door of the apartment that was

its best selling point however. It was a large airy room surrounded on the two outer walls with ceiling to floor windows; one could look out over the park below from the front ones and see clear across it. Though the side windows faced the building next to his, it was a good fifty feet away. The balconies on that building were really kept up well, with hanging baskets of plants and large containers of potted bushes and trees. If one’s imagination served him well it could have been the hanging gardens of Babylon. An array of colors burst in beautiful fall blooms when he had moved in this fall and now as winter was approaching, it was the brilliant greens of evergreen foliage. He enjoyed standing at this window and just staring out at the green space across the way. It gave him a sense of peace and of being out in the country and not cooped up in the city. He was, after all, a country boy at heart, having grown up on a small farm outside of Scranton Pennsylvania. As a young man he thought that he would more than likely grow up and become a farmer, like his father and grandfather before him and that would have suited him just fine, for he loved the smell of the earth and the great outdoors. But as fate would have it, his childhood dreams were not to come to be. He never knew the details, but after the death of his grandfather, for some reason or another, the place that had been in their family for generations was theirs no longer. He had never seen the occupant of this apartment across the way, but from it’s furnishings he assumed it was a young woman. It was frilly and feminine in its design and almost too well kept. He wondered quite often what she looked like and for some reason he had conjured up her entire life in his mind. He deduced that she must be a career woman, as he had never seen her as before stated. She must have been a junior executive of some type or [continued on Main-24]

The costumes are bright, glittery and very showbiz shiny. And they are numerous. Thrillusions is a lavish Las Vegas style production that will amaze and thrill as well as bring you on a roller coaster ride of nostalgia via the recreations of its two look-a-like singers who impersonate Tina Turner (Hollie Vest) and David Bowie (David Brighton) as they actually sing several of their world famous hits with totally accuracy of stage presence, mannerisms and vocal intonations. Only one critique: While those ten ladies in the chorus are a sensual attraction, the producers should consider adding a half dozen sculpted barely costumed handsome, sexy male dancers. This would certainly balance out those energetic dance routines and greatly increase audience appreciation from a lot of married and single ladies and single men. Trust me. Thrillusions is an hour and a half of mesmerizing entertainment not to be missed by those who appreciate mystery, mastery, magic and marvelously lush productions. Even without any masculine hung hunks, the show works on glit, fantasy, and magic and there’s a lot of it.

So what if this show is little more than a colorful cotton candy concept with anodyne antics, a pablum plot, and lighter than air music, it does comes together so beautifully you will hardly notice. The Church’s new location will be in the annex behind the Friendly Bar on Charter and Marigny Streets. Services will still be held at 10:30am. More details will be forthcoming. Fr. Michael DesJardins will still be leading the congregation in joyful prayer and praise. All GLBT and gay friendly straight people are invited to weekly Mass and special Holy Days services. As the now former owner of the Royal Street location, I am thankful for the year I was able to donate this space to the Church. Jefferson Parish Political Interviews

O

n a recent Saturday, Keith Raines donated his lovely home on Northline to the Forum for Equality for political interviews of Jefferson Parish candidates. This is a very Republican/Right Wing area so there were not as many candidates as we see in New Orleans. Still the showing was better than one might expect. Republican candidate for re-election to the Parish Council, John Young, said he was there to learn from us. I think we gave him an earful about gay rights not being special rights and the meaning of the words marriage and civil union being one in the same. He was very open and told us that he has gay friends and supports ENDA, Civil Unions, and gay adoption. Not a lot of gays want to accept the “name game” and they set back the cause by refusing to compromise. Marriage in this state and country requires a license and a legally authorized person to perform the marriages or civil unions. Marriage is not a religious ceremony. If it were, you wouldn’t need a legal divorce when the relationship fails or a license to get started. Left to religion, I don’t think anyone could get divorced in any of the major denominations and definitely not in the fundamentalist groups. We should change the name of a marriage that takes place in a religious setting to religious civil union. Judges and JP’s could just stick with civil union. Oh, well, that’s too easy, isn’t it? Every one of the candidates I spoke with would support civil unions but not all support marriage for gays – durrr. Fear breeds ignorance and we don’t do enough to educate in a way that will eliminate fear. The fear that we are taking something from the straight community or damaging society is the biggest ignorance. Responsible people willing to take on legal obligations should be the requirement for marriage. Marriage is not about having children.

I know very happy childless couples that have been joyfully married for many years. I know single lesbians and gay men that have adopted children and made them their family. The best of the candidates to my thinking was Julio Castillo, candidate for Sheriff. I didn’t want to re-elect Harry Lee so that he could die in office and groom his successor. Sheriff Lee has died before anyone expected leaving us with two candidates. Now there is a fight to reopen qualifying so that others may run. Others that were afraid of Lee. We deserve courage not default. Several who interviewed Castillo on Saturday agreed with me. Castillo earned four votes. Yes, he is young and has only eight years in law enforcement experience, however, in addition to his experience as a deputy constable, he is also a successful independent businessman. This man has heart as well as brains. After taking his wife and two young daughters to safety during Katrina, he returned to Jefferson Parish with his father and two vehicles filled with building supplies. Without asking, he started repairing the roofs of his neighbors’ homes knowing that Rita was hot on the heals of Katrina. That saved his neighbors thousand of dollars and priceless memories from being rain soaked. I asked about his being Hispanic and how that would make a difference in Jefferson Parish. We both just laughed knowing that Lee was Asian and Jindal is also considered a man of color. I like to know what color these men are considered – they look/looked normal to me even if I would not have voted for Jindal or Lee. Don’t get excited – Lee was an effective sheriff and I did vote for him years ago before I knew how homophobic he was. I am concerned for Lee’s family and the sheriff’s department. My sympathies are with them. Back to the future – Julio Castillo is very understanding of our community as he has family members that are gay. I asked for a date with his aunt who is my age but she has moved back to Nicaragua. Foiled again! His immediate family is his German heritage wife, an attorney, and two lovely daughters, Sofia and Haley, who attend public school. They live in Harvey, Louisiana. I watched the passion in this man’s eyes as we talked about race and orientation discrimination. With the name Julio, he has been called everything from Taco to Spic. He knows the pain we feel when we are called faggot or dyke. (Lesbians have learned to use the word “dyke” to their advantage – Bravo!) Remembering the pain of the childhood school yard teasing, there were tears in his eyes. This told me that there would be no scams by police to trap gay men in public restrooms in Jefferson Parish as there have been in the past. I have seen lesbians abused coming out of what was then Angles and when the Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they said the women asked for it and did nothing to help them. This will not

happen under Julio Castillo, and if it does, someone will lose their job. Castillo’s personal goal is to turn all negatives that come his way into positive outcomes. He knows and has met with heads of law enforcement from all agencies and departments in and around Jefferson. His passion is to serve and “come down hard” on crime. As of August, 2007, crime has increased significantly from 2006. In 2006, murder was up to an increase of 78.37%; assault an increase of 32.8% and burglary an increase of 24.3%. There is a shortage of officers in Jefferson – approximately 200. Castillo is pro-gay, pro-choice, progay adoption, pro-gay marriage, pro-domestic partnership benefits for gay employees of Jefferson Parish government, and pro-peace for all who live in this parish. On HIV/AIDS, he insists that ignorance has caused fear. He wants protection and health care for patients and education for the peace of mind of all citizens. He would like to cross-train police to assist in emergencies. The police were here during Katrina, he said, they could have helped with pumping stations once the storm had subsided if they had been trained. Who doesn’t want to help save our parish in times of danger? Presently, Castillo is going door to door to introduce himself as a candidate. He has a small budget that is coming out of his pocket. Support is needed. He has yard signs, one of which is in my old Metairie front yard. The first election is October 20th. Please vote. Only through a strong gay presence at the voting polls can we effect change.

one last song ...from M-22 another, rather well off from her furnishings and what belongings he had seen left about the room. He imagined her dressed in crisp, designer fashions, for the office. Her hair worn swept up tightly on her head and a rather nice pair of glasses framing her face. A typical no nonsense type of business woman. She was neat to the point of obsession; he couldn’t even remember seeing anything out of place ever or so much as a scrap of paper on the expensive Oriental rug. Then one morning in the middle of November, as he stood at the window he glanced across and was shocked to find a vacant room staring back at him. What had happened to its unseen occupant? Why had she moved on? Could she have gotten a better job someplace else or maybe she had just up and left for better unseen pastures. Well he would never know, just as he had really never known whom it was that was gone now. The next evening upon returning home from work, yes six-fifteen, he noticed a moving van parked in front of the building next door. He thought to himself that it sure didn’t take them long to find a new tenant, then of course, the move wasn’t as unexpected for the realtors as it was for him and they of course had more than likely been advertising the vacancy for a month or more. If he had any great fault, this had to be it. He over analyzed everything, wondering just how everything co-related to all other things happening in his world all the time. When he got upstairs, he went directly to the side window and looked across at the apartment. As he knew he would, he saw stacks of boxes waiting to be unpacked and two men moving furniture in. The two delivery men were getting instructions from a younger man as to where to place his things. He stood transfixed staring at the younger man, he was so handsome, he must be someone famous he surmised, perhaps a Television or Broadway star. He didn’t really recognize him as such, but he had to be. He watched while the delivery men finished their chores, were paid and left. The young man sat down and looked around him, a satisfied smile crossing his face. Jeffery could tell that this man was very pleased with his new surroundings. Suddenly the man looked up and stared through his window meeting Jeffery’s eyes. His smile broadened and he gave a slight wave in Jeffery’s direction. Without realizing it Jeffery returned the other mans greeting. He then turned away from the window, knowing it was impolite to continue to observe what was happening there and just a bit embarrassed that he had been caught doing do. Everyday since that night when he returned home he made certain to go directly to that window and give a wave to his new neighbor. One evening a month after he had moved in, the man across the

one last song ...from Main-24 way was standing with his back to the window, looking at himself in a full length mirror he had hung on the opposite wall. He was wearing jogging clothes, a fact that Jeffery would never forget. He slipped his running shoes off and then his socks. Slowly he pulled off his top, tossing it aside on the floor. Jeffery stared at his broad shoulders, tapered down to his waist. His shoulders were broad and his arms well toned. He flexed a few times staring at himself in the mirror, then slowly lowered the running pants, sliding them off one foot then the other; they joined the top laying on the floor. His legs were tightly muscled, toned as well as his upper body. Jeffery was sure now that the man was a dancer; his body was just too perfect not to be. It was not over done like a body builders would have been, nor as slim as a swimmers, but rather in-between. Jeffery wished he had met him on the street at

one time or another and asked his name. Maybe they would have even stopped in the little Bristo down the street for a brew or even a cup of coffee. But it had not happened so far. Now the dancer was standing there in front of that mirror in nothing but his underwear, leaving almost nothing to the imagination. Obviously he had no idea that he was being watched. Jeffery knew he should not be standing here looking at this man, he couldn’t understand why he was in fact doing so, he had never had these kinds of feelings that he was encountering. He had no idea why, but he removed his suit jacket and began unbuttoning his shirt. Taking it off, he tossed it aside and bending over removed his shoes and socks. When he stood back up he saw the man across the way had turned his back to the mirror on the wall and was watching him. He still wasn’t sure just what he was doing, but he unbuckled the belt on his pants and undid the top button, allowing

them to slide to the floor. The young man smiled at him and very slowly began lowering his briefs. Jeffery wanted to walk away, but was unable to move, sliding his hands under the waistband of his own shorts, he smiled back. The other guy walked stark naked over to the window, gave a little wave and reached up for the shade. He slowly pulled the shade down, only quickening Jeffery’s pulse even more. Hell, Jeffery muttered to himself, what the crap was going on, he couldn’t believe he was standing there fully erect in front of the window looking at a silhouette of another man on the drawn shade across the way. It was the first time he had ever thought of another man as erotic. It was the first time that he had ever had any gay feelings. At the time he never had thought of gay in any sexual context. cw6 ...from Main-25 The place was jam packed. We had found a chair against one of the side walls and Ball Captain Randall Brown brought us another. About that time Opal brought co-emcee Lauren Brown to the stage. Lauren returned a few digs to Opal and saw one of us (Rip) on the side, letting him know there were two seats up front for us to take photos. That was a good thing he told Lauren since the only pics he was getting was of her side “turkeyneck” profile. Well, she went off saying she didn’t care what was written in Ambush, further adding that she loved Marsha and what an “ass” Rip was. So Lauren “Turkeyneck” Brown, this first paragraph is dedicated to you. But enough about Turkeyneck, let’s get down to the pageant. When bringing out the Miss America contestants, we have to give it to Turkeyneck Brown, her eye and facial motions said it all on what we were about to experience. The girls were supposed to be on the campy side of this production, and were they ever starting with Miss I-Dee-Ho Tater Ho (Rhonda Roget), Miss Louisiana E.Z. Anna (Crystal Charbonnet) and Miss Virginia Aibe (IB) Inbred (Amber Delight) in state costume competition. Ya’ll will have to catch these lovely images on Main-26. We got to see the talents of returning Miss America Countess D. Alice Der-Sur and Mr. America Tyrique Davenport Kennedy. The hot side of the competition was the Mr. America portion beginning with Mr. Florida Kenny Fernandez, Mr. Louisiana Denzel Washington, Jr. (Jason George), Mr. Nevada Keno Kane Broadway, Mr. Pennsylvania Constantine (Jason Hellinger), and Mr. Texas Toby Lefort in presentation (non-judged). Next we got a little talent from Turkeyneck Brown and then it was swimwear competition. The Miss contestants were just too lovely, but the men were hot and pleasing to the eye. This was the only category of competition for the Mr. America contestants. The last category of competition for the girls was talent. Miss I-Dee-Ho Tater brought down the house with her Tourette syndrome composition. But Miss Louisiana E.Z. and Miss Virginia Aibe were not to be outdone doing hysteri-

cal renditions as well. While the judges were tallying, the audience was treated to moving farewell performances by reigning Miss and Mr. America C. Alice Der-Sur and Tyrique Davenport Kennedy. The crowning was up next with Miss I-Dee-Ho Tater Ho crowned 2007 Miss America with 1st alternate Miss Louisiana E.Z. Anna and 2nd alternate Miss Virginia Aibe (IB) Inbred. Mr. Pennsylvania Constantine was crowned Mr. America with 1st Alternate Mr. Texas Toby LeFort, and 2nd Alternate Mr. Louisiana

Denzel Washington, Jr. Following the festivities we joined the winners and krewe members up front at Cowpokes, and after we all really got liquored up found out another adoring nickname given by krewe members to our dearest, "Bitter" Brown. So we leave you with Lauren "Turkeyneck-Bitter" Brown, the name says it all!

ike those New Orleans ladies and gents who stroll all the way to Esplanade, Spanish Towners can do the same except they would have to do their stroll from the Stewart-Dougherty mansion to the ancient and moss-draped Boyd Oak across from the Pentagon Barracks. You can actually notice these strollers and dog-walkers on just about any day of the week, but it is especially noticeable on weekends and holidays. Saturday mornings are lively occasions for the produce buyers and arts people. Sometimes there seems to be more dogs than people at the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings in old Red Stick, but that does stretch it a little. I’ve been guilty of doing this, but I usually shop early and walk the dog closer to noon when the

crowds have left and there is more room to walk with the animals. Lots of people come out for this little weekend diversion. It’s a little comical sometimes because there is this elderly priest who is in a wheelchair, and you had better get out of his way. He thinks he is on the freeway and will flat out run you over. Heaven forbid if an animal is in the way. We locals have come to know all the farmers and nursery people who set up here every weekend. If it rains, things are moved into the parking garage. On the first Saturday of each month, the arts and crafts people exhibit in the adjacent church parking lot. These first weekends are always crowded, and I’ve noticed lately that our city’s finest men in blue have found a parking spot and just love to give tickets. I have to admit that this is needed, but at the same time, we are only talking about

ven though the Fall Break is over, the fun is just beginning in downtown Lafayette. The clock is ticking and the countdown is on. In less than two weeks, the Halloween celebrations begin, and if you’re anything like me, it is the very best time of year. I always love getting dressed up and letting slip that wild side that seems to stay hidden so much of the year. And the celebrations this season should be better than ever. The Sound Factory and Back Side are not only celebrating one of the wildest holidays of the year, but the 10th anniversary of the Grand Opening of Sound Factory. With two big events coinciding on a single night, it’s sure to be a party like no other. And don’t forget, at midnight will be the most festive Costume Contest in all of Lafayette. So if you haven’t started already, you better start working on an outrageous outfit. You don’t want to be the only one that’s underdressed. Besides throwing a party like nobody else, Sound Factory and Back Side have a weekly lineup that tops everybody else in town, hands down. Every night of the week, Sound Factory offers a different drink special. So no matter what night you decide to drop in, you’ll get great prices along with their one of a kind service. They are open seven days a week and work tirelessly to make sure each night is both fun and unique. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, which seems like nothing new, but to change things up, karaoke is now hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Chad’s a radio deejay out of Lake Charles who has as much personality as he does talent. His charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he

doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. So if you haven’t been out lately on a Tuesday night or you think Karaoke Night is just the same old thing, you definitely need to come by. Whether you enjoy being on stage or simply watching those that do, you’re sure to have an awesome night; Chad will make sure of that. And the rest of the week at Sound Factory and Back Side is just as entertaining. Between karaoke on Tuesday nights and Show Night on Sundays, they pack each night with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are fabulous drink specials and the unforgettable dance music spun by DJ Huggies. And unlike many other dance clubs, Sound Factory has a quieter more relaxed side, a Back Side, where you can take a break from the loud music and socialize with your friends, or make some new ones. So next time you’re trying to figure out something to do, come by Sound Factory and its Back Side. You’re sure to have an unforgettable night. And you’ll sleep better at night knowing you’re supporting a gay owned and operated business. And after Halloween is past, the celebrations just get wilder. We are literally at the beginning of the big holiday season. Like dominoes, there’ll be Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, and of course Mardi Gras. I sure hope you got some sleep over the Fall Break because there won’t be much rest until well into next year. But there’ll sure be a lot of celebrating. Until next time, have fun and be safe. I’ll see you around town.

four hours on a Saturday morning, and this could just convince people to go elsewhere. It is not a very good way for promoting downtown visitors. Now if we could convince these same boys in blue to do a few tickets for those state workers who speed down Spanish Town Road, it would really help tremendously. The corner of Seventh Street and Spanish Town Road has stop signs, but I think some of these illustrious state employees haven’t learned to read yet, and they certainly don’t mind speeding down the street on their way home. I’ve often wondered what they would think if several hundred people came tearing down their neighborhood street when the work day ends. Even when we tried to get speed bumps, we were told that it would offend state workers. Do I really care if this offends them? We live here people! Slow down! Watch out sweet little kitties. Them workers are coming through. Weekends and holidays are really okay. Other than the traffic for market customers, the Spanish Town community is relatively quiet. People stop to talk while out walking their dogs, or they stop and chat with those sitting on their porches. It is a rather nice and casual atmosphere. Jerry, Debbie’s son, lives next door to Josie and across from the Capitol Grocery. Since the store doesn’t have a liquor license, it is only natural for friends to get a cool one and go across to sip their brew. At other times, usually late in the evening around dark, it looks like open court is in session. Chairs are in the yard and on the sidewalk, and the porch is packed with visitors. It is a meeting of the minds for both gays and straights, and it is a great mixture of intelligent and caring individuals. I love my walks around the area. I usually stop at Debbie and Claudette’s place and chat for awhile. Sometimes Josie is there too, but most of time I meet Josie walking her dog around the neighborhood and down my street. There is only one person who breaks all the rules and walks his dog without a leash. That’s just his way of defying the law, the same way a certain female abuses red zones. It’s as if it is their way or no way. I choose to ignore people like this. It’s a matter of respect, and it is difficult to respect anyone who is so self-centered and above the law. Therefore, they don’t deserve any respect at all. I have to tell you that last Sunday when I was out, Claudette must have just come out for the day because she was all polished and dressed in new attire. She didn’t have her trademark cigar, but she was bright and bushy tailed in her yellow shoes, blue and yellow plaid pants, white shirt, and spiffy hairdo. Casually leaning on the fence, she was surveying her kingdom and welcoming all who came within her domain. She is frank and to the point in her opinions, and she usually hits the nail right on the head. I like that in a woman, and I think she is one of the best. Of course if you are looking for a more calm and relaxed individual, you have to look no further than Josie. This Spanish Town resident is just one of the very nicest women I’ve ever met. She seems to get along well with everyone, and she is perhaps the most well-liked and respected woman in the community. She carries herself with a rather casual approach at life but at the same time is one who appears to have her feet firmly planted on the ground. It is always a pleasure talking with

her. Sitting around the tables in front of the grocery store is another spot for casual meetings. Most of the time, you see two or three people with laptops, or reading newspapers, or eating their lunch with friends. If it’s crowded, there are other tables inside, which is especially nice if it is raining. Barry is the head chef and comes up with some rather nice meals. It surprises people when they see the menus posted outside. You just can’t beat his meat loaf, red beans and rice, or smothered steaks. From cat food and bathroom items to gourmet coffee and snacks, Capitol Grocery offers it all. The one thing that pleased me about this particular corner was when they removed the pay phone outside. Of course, these are fast becoming obsolete, but this one encouraged riff-raff at all hours of the night. It wasn’t unusual to see illegal things happening here, but now it is perhaps one of the busiest and best corners in the entire downtown section. It is a Spanish Town landmark. Spanish Town welcomes you to come and walk her streets. It is residential, not at all like the French Quarter, and there is so much to see here – beautiful houses that have been restored, nice and unusual plants, and those pink flamingos. I guess I’m going to have to get one so I can “keep up with the Joneses.” Pink is the color as long as you don’t paint it on the street. Our great city fathers do not like this. In the meantime, check out the neighborhood. It is a nice place and filled with nice people.

s you can see, there is more to any city than the bars and shopping centers, but with the gay community, you either live in an area of common interests or you gather at bars to be with others of similar interests. That is why Baton Rouge is so blessed. The bar scene is nice but not like New Orleans. You have them scattered out here, so there is no walking with drinks and merging into the crowds along the street. Each one here is separate, different, and offer customers a variety of options in entertainment – from karaoke to dancing to shows. Take your pick, or pick them all. George’s is the oldest and most widely known of the local bars. It’s not only the bar with the personal touch, but it’s the bar that has kept in touch with the community over the years and has offered a place to gather and have a nice time. This really is a testament to how Richard has guided this business over the years, and with the great selection of people working for him, it just is one that doesn’t get any better. After all these years of being here, I have to say that there are a couple of guys that I really hated to see leave. My buddy Joey, now at Good Friends, was a great loss, but he is within driving distance so things are okay now. The other one is Joe, who was an instant attraction for everyone, and he moved away to Georgia or Florida. I have often wondered what happened to him. The last time I saw him, I took a picture of him from the Ambush balcony on Bourbon Street. All the others guys who now can be found at George’s are exceptionally nice, and that includes Chansley too. However, if I was going to pick that personal touch person, it wouldn’t be her (nothing personal sweetie), but I definitely could cherish a moment or two with sexy [continued on Expose-3]

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-2 Luther. My tongue gets hard just thinking about him. I always enjoy being at George’s. This same feeling carries over to Splash. I find that if the bartenders are appealing and friendly, I have a better time whether I’m alone or with friends. It’s all about making someone feel welcome, and I am always welcomed graciously when I enter the front door. Mia is just one of the great assets of this dance emporium. If you want an impression to stick, you start at the front door, and that is exactly what happens at Splash. I always think of Hair when I walk in. Time has moved on, but I still expect to see her sitting there. I was surprised when she left Baton Rouge, but Las Vegas seems to be good for her.

Longevity, whether it is at the door or behind the bar, helps to set the tone for the bar itself, and with Splash, the fact that all employees are sticking around for longer periods says a lot for the management. The same could be said for Hound Dogs. I’ve seen lots of bartenders come and go, but then along came Joy and Johnny, and things leveled off. Now if newcomer Louis sticks around, it will be what I consider to be the best trio yet. There are others who work here, but I’m not that familiar with them so I can’t really comment on their personalities or their working relationships with customers. What I can see now is a bar that has become one of excellence in service and in atmosphere. James and Kyle are to be congratulated [continued on Expose-6]

ustin still is catching its breath from the whirlwind of activities surrounding this year’s 2007 Capitol City Rodeo. The cowboys have come and gone but their impression still lingers. Friday night’s dance, with its live entertainment lead by the tremendous singing voice of Austin’s own Alison Goodgame, was a great way to kickoff the weekend. Alison wowed the crowd with a traditional country set and then picked up her guitar and hit the lounge with a fantastic singer/songwriter set. It was nice seeing local talent showcased. After all, Austin is the live music capitol. Saturday’s Wild and Wooly pool party, hosted by the super friendly Heart of Texas Bears, was the hit of the weekend. Great music and hot men all mixed poolside with tasty concoctions served up by furry curbside service. Those HOT Bears went out of their way to make sure each person got special attention. It was smiles all around. TGRA packed the Travis County Expo Center and the crowd was treated to some of the finest rodeo competitors on the IGRA circuit. All in all a great way to spend a weekend and rumor has it that Austin has been chosen as the site for next year’s

25th Anniversary Texas Gay Rodeo. The talented crew that made this year’s rodeo such a success has signed back on and vow to make next year’s silver anniversary rodeo even bigger and better. Mark your calendars now for Texas 25 – The Party as Big as Texas – coming September 2008. You heard it here first! Tinkerbell wasn’t the only fairy at Oilcan Harry’s as they presented a fantastic show featuring all the sights and sounds of Disney, interpreted as only Oilcan Harry’s can. As always, their talented cast gave a performance that was so fun you couldn’t help but hum along. Definitely an E-ticket. And speaking of humming along, stop in on Tuesdays and see if you can stop yourself as Austin DJ extraordinaire Scot Free takes us back by spinning all our favorites of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. See Whitney before the habit. Catch one of Madonna’s early personalities. Sip a giant martini while bopping along to The Weather Girls. Tuesdays are a party not to miss at Austin’s leading GLBT nightclub. See for yourself what makes OCH so special. Things truly are better in the can. Things are positively not 4th Street over on San Jacinto where CP is quickly becoming the alternative party in Austin. The Ladies are loving Wednesdays as CP

To mark the 20th anniversary of the AIDS Walk, sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display. The Quilt is a powerful visual reminder of the devastation of HIV/AIDS. As the epidemic continues to claim lives, the Quilt unfortunately continues to grow. Its impact on those who view the lovingly created panels is immense. One can’t help but be overcome by the sense of loss as you walk through panel after panel representing someone’s life. If you have never viewed the Quilt, this is the perfect opportunity to not only take in the enormity of the AIDS epidemic but to also take a step in the right direction – a step toward a cure.

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-3 on how they have managed to create a neighborhood bar without ever trying. It is just an evolution that occurred, but it is an extremely good one. Lots of other bars offer entertainment and fine drinks, but it is these three that rank high with the gays and lesbians, and the only thing missing is a Hide-A-Way or a Doubloons. Maybe someday, it will happen this way again. That would be nice.

Keepin' Up

ittle John keeps me up to date on baseball players. He sent me the news item this morning that was filmed in the Boston locker room, champagne spurting everywhere and one nice player in his jock – twice – and oh-sowell endowed. My goodness! It would have been nice to see that in person. Little John is my margarita buddy. I don’t see him as much anymore either. I guess he and Phil just find other ways to occupy their time. I hear they seldom come up for air. Now who told me that? TTT is another one to keep me up to date on special newspaper features of interest, both with Baton Rouge and New Orleans topics. We don’t see as much of each other anymore, but it is only because of our work schedules. I did run into him last week at Christina’s, so I joined him for lunch. We caught up on the latest news and some gossip, but it was mainly news. I think he will be living alone again by the time you read this. I personally like being alone and strictly by choice. Just because you live alone doesn’t mean you have to be lonely – if you get my drift. Another friend, this one in Florida, sent me the Dr. Phil test, and I scored exactly what is expected of any Libran. It was a quick test, and I scored higher than Dr. Phil or Oprah. I’m not sure what that means, but I sure don’t rate as high as them on the pay scale. It’s about time for Sam and Leonard to head out to Europe. They have been planning this trip for quite some time, and they will be gone most of October. While on one of my strolls last week, I ran into our publishing executive mowing the lawn at one of his properties. I thought he hired this type of labor out while he stayed home with his youthful companions, but I guess the hired help just isn’t the same as it used to be. Poor Dick was just working himself into a frenzy. With the cooler weather coming on, I suppose I’ll be seeing more of David entertaining on his porch. This sexy neighbor, as you may recall from past columns, went on a diet, started working out and riding his bicycle, and picked out that tight black shirt and skimpy black shorts to wear, and now he is seldom seen in regular clothes. Well, he does wear clothes occasionally, like at Hound Dogs when we drink one or two cool ones there and talk to Jeannie. The older he gets, the sexier he becomes - and the less clothes he wears. And that’s a good thing. With Halloween coming up, you may want to take in the local spook house, located over by George’s. They are only open the one month a year, and each night you find the lines wrapped around the block. With ticket prices the way they are, it only takes one month of business, and the other eleven months are just rest periods. It must be nice. [continued on Expose-8]

e decided to get away for an overnight excursion right after the last Ambush delivery. It was off early on Thursday with a stop in Bay St. Louis to visit Marty and Koo at their cottage in the resort town which had just been completely rebuilt following Katrina. The cottage is on a quiet and delightful street. After a tour, it was off for breakfast at The Buttercup, 112 N. Second Street. The eatery is the business of former Phoenix proprietor's Jamie Temple and George Cossitt. It's bright and cheery and all of our breakfast were excellent. But before leaving, don't forget to go by the counter and try some of the home baked goods. The chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies and macadamian nut cookies are to die for. Next time we want to try some of the muffins.

M

obile was next on our agenda so we were off taking the scenic route down the coast.

We checked into the Ramada Inn later that afternoon, one block off of Government Street in downtown Mobile. After a power nap, we traveled a short two blocks to Gabriel's Downtown, 55 S. Joachim Street around 10pm. There we found bartender JM and some of the locals enjoying an evening out. We were looking for Elvin, but found out we had just missed him. You can visit GabrielsDowntown.COM for more on the club. A short walk around the corner brought us to B-Bob's at 213 Conti Street. The place was beginning to fill up for the 12:30 show and we found bar baron Jerry and bartender Jason behind the bar. It was quite festive and we learned from Jerry that B-Bob's was getting ready to celebrate it's 15th anniversary weekend. The Queen of Clubland, Martha Wash, will perform in a live concert at the club on Saturday, October 20. For more information, visit b-bobs.com. Leaving the city the next morning began with a stop by Krispy Kreme, one of the last in the South, for a glazed creme filled and lemon filled donut.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, or so they say. There was a time when those Mardi Gras tapes were quite popular, and I have a complete set dating back a number of years. The stories they tell and the revealing body sights are quite nice. I see guys in their younger years who never thought anything about making historical films – at least not this kind. It’s like stepping back in time and re-living those moments all over again. I wonder what has happened to some of these guys. What great memories I have here. Oh, and one of the pictures I have is of a neighbor friend in a very un-ladylike pose, blouse up, boobies in view, and wiggling them in the breeze. I dare not say who this is, but she doesn’t smoke a cigar. Ain’t life grand!?
