PFLAG Criticizes Congress Removal of Hate Crimes Legislation

www.pflag.org for updates on activities related to Hate Crimes legislation and other related issues.

ashington, D.C.-Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) condemned a move by Congress for removing the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (LLEHCPA), also known as the Matthew Shepard Act, from existing legislation, effectively killing the bill. The passage of the legislation would have extended federal law to cover crimes motivated by hatred for people based on their gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. “PFLAG is saddened that Congress has decided at this time not to protect all Americans, especially our children,” said John Cepek, National President of PFLAG. “We had come so close in this session for Congress to enact crimes protections for all - the progress made was historic, as was this callous act to end our effort.” LLEHCPA passed the House of Representatives and then the Senate, where it was attached as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, a Department of Defense spending bill. Had it been included, it would go before the President to potentially be signed into law. “This isn’t the end of the fight for this basic and necessary legislation,” said Jody M. Huckaby, PFLAG’s executive director. “We’ll double our efforts to send the message to Congress that our families deserve basic protections too.” Huckaby noted that thousands of PFLAG members have contacted their representatives in Congress, trying to convince legislators that this is a law whose time has come. He added that “State laws are inadequate to respond to these crimes. Only 27 states and the District of Columbia have hate crimes laws inclusive of sexual orientation, and only five of those and D.C.’s are expressly transgender inclusive. We need an inclusive Federal law that protects everybody, regardless of where they live and who they are.” PFLAG will also continue to encourage its vast network of members to press for change in their own home states and local governments to further equality. Judy & Dennis Shepard Respond to Withdrawal of Hate Crimes Legislation

W

J

udy and Dennis Shepard, the parents of slain Matthew Shepard, have issued the following statement on the withdrawal of hate crimes legislation in Congress. “We are truly dismayed to find that Congress now will put aside its leadership on passage of federal hate crimes legislation that includes sexual orientation and gender identity. “At this time of year that fills us all with hope for humankind, we are sad to find that a Congressional majority of each House who have already adopted the Matthew Shepard Act cannot yet come together. “If not here, where? If not now, when? “Make no mistake; this is a small triumph of process over principle. We are dedicated to redoubling our efforts next year to achieve our vision of a hate-free America that truly includes everyone. This has never simply been about Matthew Shepard and our family, this legislation is a gift delayed but never forgotten for all America’s families. “We thank our friends, allies and champions in Washington and around the world who have struggled so hard this year. We know that we will unite once again next year to achieve passage of this milestone human rights legislation.” The original legislation is formally entitled, the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (S. 1105). This summer, it was offered as a bipartisan amendment by Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) to the Department of Defense authorization bill that was approved by both Houses of Congress. The virtually identical House version of the bill passed overwhelmingly on May 3rd, 2007 with a bipartisan vote of 237 to 180 as an appropriate and measured response to the unrelenting and under-addressed problem of hates crimes against individuals based on sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and disability.

Prior federal hate crimes law permitted the federal prosecution of a hate crime only if the hate crime was motivated by bias based on race, color, religion, or national origin and the assailant intends to prevent the victim from exercising a “federally protected right” such as the right to vote or attend school. Hate crime legislation was first enacted in 1968 when the country witnessed acts of violent hate focused at the AfricanAmerican community. When Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered in 1998, the current hate crime statutes did not apply to the crime. Without the federal resources needed, finding justice for this horrific act cost Albany County, Wyoming more than $150,000 and forced the local law enforcement to furlough five members of its force. The Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Dennis and Judy Shepard in memory of their 21-year-old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998. Created to honor Matthew in a manner that was appropriate to his dreams, beliefs and aspirations, the Foundation seeks to “Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion & Acceptance” through its varied education, outreach and advocacy programs. Revealing an American Wilderness: Audubon’s Birds of Louisiana Exhibition Runs thru Mar. 2

B

aton Rouge, LA - The Louisiana State Museum in collaboration with the Louisiana Office of State Parks, presents Revealing an American Wilderness: Audubon’s Birds of Louisiana. This stunning exhibition of prints by John James Audubon presents twenty species of birds that Audubon drew during his time in New Orleans; West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana; and Natchez, Mississippi. The dynamic poses and vivid colors of the hand-colored engravings communicate the diversity of American wildlife. Equally impressive are the prints’ dimensions: at two by three feet, each bird is rendered life-size. From the statuesque white pelican to the delicate ruby-throated hummingbird, visitors will catch glimpses of nature’s splendor. “Once visitors view this world-class exhibition in Baton Rouge, I believe they will be inspired to follow in the steps of Audubon in Louisiana’s own backyard,” said Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu, who oversees the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. “Our state provides several opportunities to enjoy and appreciate the natural beauty and abundant wildlife of the state.” John James Audubon (1785-1851) was born in Santo Domingo (now Haiti) and raised by his stepmother in France. At the age of 18, Audubon was sent to America, both to manage the family estate in Pennsylvania and to avoid conscription in Napoleon’s army. Arriving in 1803, Audubon was immediately captivated by the beauty of the unspoiled American wilderness. In the fall of 1820 Audubon embarked on a commercial flatboat departing Ohio and headed south for New Orleans. After several expeditions into the woodlands of Louisiana, Audubon recorded his travels

in The Birds of America, and The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. In 1834 the State of Louisiana acquired a collection of Audubon’s Birds of America prints, which later became part of the Louisiana State Museum’s permanent collection. “Audubon combined his love of nature with his artistic talent to produce some of the most beautiful and lifelike depictions of birds ever created”, said Louisiana State Museum Director, David Kahn. “He was famed for his exacting attention to detail and his practice of depicting wildlife in their native habitats.” In addition to the prints, visitors will also be able to view bird specimens on loan from the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science. Revealing an American Wilderness: Audubon’s Birds of Louisiana will be on view through March 2, 2008 at the Louisiana State Museum - Baton Rouge located at 660 North 4th Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802. Admission is $6 for [continued on Main-6]

Tango Fire, Direct from Buenos Aires, Presented by NOBA Feb. 8 & 9

T

he New Orleans Ballet Association presents the sizzling sensation, Tango Fire, performed by Argentina’s Estampas Porteñas. Direct from Buenos Aires, this internationally acclaimed tango company performs Friday and Saturday, February 8 & 9, 8pm at Tulane University’s Dixon Hall. In slit skirts, seamed stocking and stunningly tailored suits, Tango Fire pairs five of the world’s leading tango couples with the virtuoso five-piece band, Quatrotango. Hailed as “one of the truly outstanding tango shows in the world today,” (Hong Kong’s Morning Post), Tango Fire theatri-

cally traces the history of tango from the red-light district of Buenos Aires during the late 19th century, to the glamour of the Roaring Twenties and ballroom dance crazy of today. Tickets for the performance range from $30 to $80. Students and seniors (65 and older) receive a $7 discount off the regular ticket prices. Group discounts also are available. For tickets or more information, call the New Orleans Ballet Association Box Office at 504.522.0996. Tickets also may be purchased online through www.nobadance.com, or via Ticketmaster at 504.522.5555 or www.ticketmaster.com. [continued on Main-8]

the "official" dish ...from Main-6 Founded in Buenos Aires in 1996, Estampas Porteñas is led by Argentine ballerina Carolina Soler. Conceived, choreographed and artfully directed by Soler, Tango Fire showcases the intricate razorsharp timing and dueling partnering of tango. The soundtrack for the evening of traditional and modern tango arrangements, including works by legendary Astor Piazzolla, is provided by the Quatrotango. This musical ensemble of piano, violin, bass, bandoneon with guest vocalist is led by musical director Gabriel Clenar. Since 2003, Tango Fire has toured worldwide receiving rave reviews from Sydney to South Africa and Edinburgh to New York. Back by popular demand, Tango Fire returns to the United States for a 16 city cross-country tour. Born in the brothels, dance halls and gangster underground of Buenos Aires in the late 1880s, tango evolved as a result of borrowed dance and music forms from the poor immigrant populations from Africa and Europe that blended their cul-

tures with native-born Argentines. By combining traditional polkas, waltzes and mazurkas with popular habanera from Cuba and rhythms from Africa, tango emerged. This sexy dance form quickly evolved to become the dance rage in Paris and the world by the early 20th century. Following tango’s Golden Age in the 1940s and 50s, interest in dance form diminished as American swing and rock and roll became popular. In the 1980s, tango began a flourishing renaissance that continues today following the success of the international touring show Tango Argentina and the Broadway musical Forever Tango. The New Orleans Ballet Association is the region’s premiere presenting and service organization dedicated solely to furthering the art of dance and dance education. Following the performances of Tango Fire the New Orleans Ballet Association will continue its season of dance with the fresh and exciting Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (March 28-29); and the unsurpassed beauty of classical dance with ABSOULTE

BALLET!, featuring dancers from the acclaimed Pacific Northwest Ballet (May 910).

Big Easy MCC's Revival & Rebirth

R

ev. Clinton Crawshaw and his partner Leon Huton have recently moved to New Orleans from London, England to lead revival and rebirth at the Big Easy Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) here in the city. Rev Clinton was trained at Oxford and ordained in the Anglican Church before choosing MCC as his spiritual home. They are both excited at the opportunities here, and look forward to helping build a church where everyone can be ‘celebrated’ and not ‘tolerated’.

Leon Huton & Rev. Clinton Crawshaw

Clinton and Leon say they are already overwhelmed by the friends they have made and the interest shown in the Church in just a couple of weeks - and invite everyone to “join in the project” over the coming months. Rev. Clinton has offered that anyone interested in coming to church but a little unsure as to what to expect can ring him for a chat before turning up - or even meet for coffee before committing to a visit! The Big Easy MCC meets every Sunday at 1333 S. Carrolton Ave. (Carrollton and Oak) at S. Matthews UCC. Call 504.214.4340 or visit www.bigeasymcc.com for more informations.

es, 2007 has been a GREAT year here in New Orleans and all along the Gulf Coast; but are you ready for 2008? uld Sweet Olive Bed and Breakfast will kick off New Year's Eve with their annual afternoon celebration Bears and Bubbles from 4 till 7pm. Proprietors Dale and Dave invite all you bears and friends to stop by. I can tell you from personal experience; this is a great way to start an evening in a relaxed atmosphere with some great folks from all over the country.

B

y the time this is published our neighbors over in Mobile and the Gulf Coast will have been very busy celebrating the holidays. The Southern Renegades hosted their Leather Santa night at B-bob’s featuring Colt Man Roger Danik as Santa. Now that would be a Santa to see! I can only imagine who all was sitting on his lap requesting a present or six. The evening was also a Toy Collection Night for South Alabama Cares, an AIDS service agency. Guests were asked to donate a toy in return for entry in the door

with prize drawings for all sorts of Colt memorabilia. On December 8th, the Gulf Coast Bear and Leather Association held their annual Bears ‘n Baskets teddy bear and gift basket auction at the Roundup in Pensacola. The Bears were joined by the Renegades to raise money for G.E.A.R.S., an agency dedicated to teaching safer sex practices to at risk young men in the Gulf Coast region. The GCBLA has been active in raising money for local charities in their community for years, and deserve every bit of thanks from all of us. It is good to see the GCBLA and Southern Renegades working together for the benefit of the Gulf Coast GLBT Community. It just goes to show that when clubs do not just coexist but get along and work together, everyone comes out on top. Check out the upcoming events of both clubs on the web sites: www.southernrenegareds.com and www.gcbla.com respectively.

ginning to end this year. But have no fear; the krewes are hard at work making preparations for the flash and glitz of the bal masque. Mardi Gras 2008 promises to be fast and furious but filled to the brim with activities. No matter how you celebrate it, from parades to bal masques, to people watching in the French Quarter, there will be plenty to keep you busy. The Krewe of Amon Ra will hold their 43rd Bal Masque on January 12 at English Turn Country Club. The party begins at 8pm. Check Amon Ra’s website for more information: gaymardigras.com/amonra. The Krewe of Petronius will hold their ball on Sunday, January 13th at the Scottish Rite Temple. The ball starts at 7pm. The New Orleans Bear and Bear Trapper Social Club will gather at the corner of St. Charles Ave. and Josephine St. on Sunday, January 27th at 10am for their annual Bears on Parade. The Bears get together to watch three parades roll down St. Charles Ave. and try to guess who they know on the floats. I know many members of various clubs ride in the Krewe of King Arthur Parade every year. Also on January 27th, the Krewe of Satyricon will hold their annual Bal Masque starting at 8pm at The Sugar Mill. For more information and tickets, check out Satyricon’s web site: www.mystickreweofsatyricon.com. hrough a fog of oxycodone, I am contemplating resolutions for the New Year, the steroids trails that have kept CNN busy all morning and where equality fits into the National plan. At some point after the Democratic candidates’ debate, the names of sports stars will be posted according to their use of drugs. It is folly to me as no one seems to really want to know. And when we do find out, no one wants to do anything. That brings me to equality. If you commit a crime, you should be punished. Michael Vick belongs in jail. If he is convicted of using steroids, Barry Bonds should serve time in jail. That’s equality under the law. Law makers and law enforcers will turn a blind eye to crimes in sports. What does that say to our youth? It is okay to do it if you don’t get caught or if you excel in sports. That is the American way of equality. Sports heroes are not equal. They are above the regular street junkie. If this country is too jaded to punish those clearly offending the law, then how will there be equality in any area of the country? Are gay people equal to straight people? In the Constitution, yes. In public opinion, no. Not until the gay communityat-large stands up together in a court of justice will we see change in equality. I listened to the very congenial debate among the Democrats. Everyone spoke

of change and equality. Nothing was said about gay rights. This is the time to contact the office of the candidate of your choice and demand to know where he/she stands and what they will do for our equality if they are elected using our vote. Our votes are more precious this year than in any year past. Democrats think the gay vote is theirs just because they are Democrats. This should not be true. We should make them work for our support. If you don’t watch CNN eight hours a day, you might be pleased to know that Hillary was outstanding. The talking heads had lots of useless things to say but if you are a person of independence and any intelligence, you can hear for yourselves what is being said by each candidate. We need to start listening to the candidates and making up our own minds rather than listening to the media bull-artists who will try to make up our minds for us. I am still hoping for a Clinton—Obama ticket. They seemed to play nice on TV today. Well, the pain pills are leaving me and I need to drag myself back into bed. I learned while in the hospital that knee surgery is the most painful surgery according to nurses and physical therapists. I am a chicken – so I would not have done this if I had known. However, now that it is history, I am feeling good about the pain because it is less everyday. There is more range of motion even with the staples still

and much more as we take over the street. Drinks will be available inside and out. Also on February 2nd is the Krewe of Armeinius Bal Masque which will be held at the Alario Center in Westwego beginning at 8pm. Sunday, February 3rd is the Lords of Leather Ball Masque XXV at 8pm in the Alario Center in Westwego. With this being the big 25th Anniversary for the Lords, big things are planned. Ball Captain David tells me they are including many new and traditional aspects this year. “Expect a few surprises as well,” he said. I have seen the hard work the Lords are putting in and can attest that this will be one of the best balls ever. Information on the Lords Bal Masque and the Night of the Black Mask Block Party can be found on the web site www.lordsofleather.com. It may seem like a lot to think about this early but time is limited this year. Yes, you can schedule all the things you want to do but make sure you leave time to just have fun. trodding the boards by Brian Sands

E-mail: bsnola2@hotmail.com

I

n the spirit of the holidays, I’m going to acknowledge only those things about which I have nice things to say. Well, more or less. Here goes— It was worth a journey to the North Shore to see Slidell Little Theatre’s Singin’ in the Rain, a stage adaptation of the beloved movie. Despite a somewhat choppy book, Scott Sauber’s direction gave the musical a cinematic flow and he exhibited a real talent for choreographing complicated mise en crowd scènes. As Don Lockwood, Josh St. Cyr may not have erased memories of Gene Kelly— who could?—but he came pretty darn close. Unlike Don’s putative lover Lina Lamont who’s said to be a triple threat, “she can’t act, dance or sing”, St. Cyr is a triple threat who can do all three, fabulously, and he conveyed an endearing charm as well. Bryan Reilly brought a sly presence to Don’s sidekick Cosmo Brown and matched St. Cyr in the talent and charm departments. If both were a tad too young for their parts, give’em a few years and they’ll be Broadway worthy. With a sure comic presence, Janie Heck made Lina a villainess you loved to hate, wonderfully maintaining a nasal voice that could pierce metal even when singing What’s Wrong With Me. Vicki Lighter was good in the Debbie Reynolds role though her being visibly older than St. Cyr was a bit incongruous with Kathy’s being supposedly a fresh new face. (Hey, I’m not being bitchy; her bio said she’s the “mother of two teenagers”.) There were nice touches throughout including Joshua Brewer’s vocal soloist, Sam Beverly’s make-up girl, Sally Anne Buras’ period costumes and Lindsey Price’s slam-bang choreography. And when actual rain started coming down for the title number and St. Cyr launched into the celebrated pas de deux with his umbrella, it was simply the best musical number seen on any local stage in recent memory. Returning to Orleans Parish, when Bert V. Royal’s Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead debuted in Manhattan in 2004, The New York Times admired its “clever script [that had] charm and depth.”A year later, when it opened for a commercial run, a different reviewer in the same paper completely dismissed it. Based on Gary Rucker’s recent production at Tulane, I’d lean more toward the former opinion for this tale of what happens to the Peanuts gang once they grow up and become high school students. Though there’s still a lot of humor to be had, Royal imbues his story with a melancholic air as Charlie Brown & Co. confront death, confusing sexuality and many of the other serious matters that kids have to deal with today. Though I wish the script had a little more heft, Royal captures the zeitgeist of our times while leaving us with a touching, metaphysical and unexpected conclusion involving someone with the initials CS. Rucker served the text terrifically by

not overplaying it or yocking it up for easy laughs. (That said, the audience I saw it with, mostly Tulane students, was strangely subdued unlike others, I’m told, during the run.) If he didn’t capture every single one of the script’s facets, that could be chalked up to the inexperience of some of the cast members. As Beethoven, the Schroeder character abused by his Dad and now a sensitive gay boy ostracized by the “in” crowd, and Tricia/Peppermint Pattie, who covers her latent lesbianism by putting down others, Sean Knapp and Claire Gresham, respectively, had the best material to work with and made the most of it. Ryan Michael Davis as a now germ-phobic, bullying Matt/Pig Pen, and Rebecca Williams as Marcy, still Peppermint Pattie’s acolyte, were just as good with more one-note characters. Andrew Farrier was a little too goodlooking as C.B./Charlie Brown but negotiated the role’s emotional hairpin turns well while carrying the brunt of the show’s philosophizing. Incarcerated in an institution for setting the Little Redheaded Girl’s hair on fire, Meredith Mullins was fun in her one scene even if she lacked Lucy’s imperiousness. Over at the Hi Ho Lounge through December 22, Michael Martin is elucidating the joys, temptations and mysteries of the Big Easy via his adaptation of Robert Kinney’s 1946 guidebook, The Bachelor in New Orleans. Strolling into the Lounge in a dapper outfit, Martin proceeds to give advice on how to get the most out of New Orleans’ notable institutions, how to avoid becoming that bane of civilization “a tourist” (“treat your bartender well”), things to watch out for (“ladies of the evening, taxi drivers and being lonely as here it’s easy to make friends”, words of advice that are still true, eh?), how to get the most out of Bourbon Street & la vie de boheme and, lastly, how to handle romance in the Big Easy. Among the highlights of this 70 minute monolog, there’s a wonderful description of Mardi Gras and at the end Kinney/Martin perfectly encapsulates the urge any sane person has to return to NOLA after one has left. Martin’s outsize personality is wellsuited to the material and he makes a convincing raconteur, astutely handling audience members who want to get into the act. Having seen the show just after its Thanksgiving hiatus, I’m sure by now Martin has a firm command of his lines so that nothing should prevent him from giving full-throttled life to the material. If I’m not absolutely convinced of Bachelor’s dramatic (vs. narrative) value, it’s still entertaining and fun, getting more and more involving as it goes along its merry way. More merriment can be had over at Le Chat Noir where Scrooge in Rouge! is holding forth till December 30th. In what could become a holiday perennial, Ricky Graham, Jefferson Turner and Jeffrey Roberson, a.k.a. Varla Jean Merman, lovingly send up the British Music Hall tradition with their version of A Christmas

Carol featuring terrible puns, consistent excessiveness and 70 jam-packed minutes of frivolity. Though 17 of the Royal Music Hall 20Member Variety Players have been felled by food poisoning, with Graham, Roberson/Merman--quickly becoming New Orleans’ answer to Lunt & Fontanne—and, convincing in various trouser roles, Yvette Hargis quick-changing costumes faster than you can say “Queen Victoria”, you’d swear you really are seeing a cast of twenty. I’d kill to be backstage to watch the costumes flying on and off. Speaking of costumes, they ranged from a Christmas tree to a human-sized pickle. Cecile Casey Covert, abetted by Amanda Hebert’s wildly imaginative wigs, has outdone herself with flounces and flourishes and petticoats that perfectly define each and every one of the many characters. If, ultimately, this is not a Christmas Carol that elicits a lump in the throat for Scrooge’s conversion, what do you expect from a show with such lyrics as “Tiny Tim, Tiny Tim/Can anyone be as pathetic as him?” While not technically a Christmas show, Purlie, seen recently at Le Petit, seems appropriate for this season with its tale of redemption and right triumphing over prejudice and petty mindedness. Having never seen it before I wish I could say Purlie is a neglected masterpiece. But, adapted from Ossie Davis’ potent play Purlie Victorious, there’s no escaping the fact that with a score that hardly lingers on one’s mind, Purlie is a wellmeaning, mildly enjoyable but ultimately second rate musical. That, however, did not stop the cast at Le Petit from giving some first rate performances. As the preacher determined to get a church of his own, Fenwick Broyard III’s handsome visage, powerful voice and dynamic presence made for a Purlie that could hardly have been improved upon. That this was his stage debut made his commanding performance that much more astonishing. An MPH candidate at Tulane, let’s hope this will not be the last time we see Broyard trodding the boards. Idella Johnson, an Ambie Award nominee three years ago for Eubie!, made Lutiebelle, who starts off as just a pawn in Purlie’s scheme to get $500 that is rightfully his and winds up stealing his heart, very “country” but didn’t overplay it. Her Lutiebelle was delightful but genuinely touching as she revealed her sad childhood. Asia Rainey was so natural as Missy, Purlie’s sister-in-law and ally, bringing wry wisdom, strength and world-weariness to the role, that it was hard to believe that she, too, was making her musical theater debut. The incomparable Dane Rhodes, done up in white beard and Colonel Sanders attire as the owner of the modern day cotton plantation where Purlie is set, demonstrated just how ugly bonedeep racism can be, concurrently patronizing and threatening his employees; that he could also pull off the comic song Big Fish, Little Fish did not diminish an audience’s satisfaction at his demise. The ever reliable Carol Sutton was fine as Rhodes’ housekeeper though I wish she had had more to do. Joshua Palmer’s scenery consisting of the shack where Missy and Purlie live and the plantation commissary displayed a high degree of verisimilitude. Kesha McKey’s choreography aptly captured the

characters’ sense of joy, determination and oppression. Moving from the fields of South Georgia back to New Orleans’ Jackson Square, though my colleague Patrick Shannon will provide a more detailed review of Puccini’s three one act opera’s done last month by the New Orleans Opera Association, Gianni Schicci, the third opera of Il Trittico’s three, was a sheer delight as its tale of an inheritance and greedy relatives was imaginatively transported to an apartment in the Pontalba in the 1950’s. The direction had just the right effervescence, the entire cast sung beautifully and totally got into the playful spirit, and the translation, which substituted references to Marrerro, Westwego, Mignon Faget and the Huey P. Long bridge for the original ones, was absolutely brilliant. If the universe portrayed in The Fix, seen last month at Delgado, seemed a bit far-fetched with its political dynasty filled with druggies and mob connections, what with William Jefferson’s frozen $90,000 and Larry Craig’s foot-tapping skills making headlines, I suppose nothing can be considered too far-fetched these days. In fact, in the ten years since its world premiere in London, John Dempsey’s book and lyrics seem absolutely prescient even if their satire is more Saturday Night Live 101 than as biting as we’re served up in our daily papers. While I totally admire Delgado for presenting something previously unseen in NOLA, I just wish the material, particularly Dana P. Rowe’s music, had been better. Despite that, Bryan Wagar was compelling as a dissolute dolt thrust into national prominence. And as his mother, the matriarch of the nasty Chandlers, Tracey E. Collins, in a beautifully calibrated performance of assured venality, proved to be a Livia for the post-Sopranos era. Once a ground-breaking metaphor for love and commitment in the time of AIDS, Craig Lucas’ Prelude to a Kiss, has lost a lot of its oomph now that drug cocktails can keep HIV+ people looking fine for years and years. Having missed its earlier stage and screen incarnations, I have to admit I was a little disappointed by Prelude’s thinness though appreciative of the Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans for giving me the opportunity to see it. Among Prelude’s cast, Angela Papale made a believable transformation from young woman to old-man-in-youngwoman’s-body. Peter Gabb was likewise very good at channeling the personality of a young woman despite having a body that’s been around for a while; he was especially fine in Lucas’ big monolog about mortality. In smaller roles, David Glasser’s theatrical flair was amusing while Jessi Norton’s restrained portrayal was all the more impressive for being so different from her more showy role in Boy Gets Girl. Lastly, what kind things can I say about Jerry Rabushka’s Woof! The Road Show, a touring production about a backstage gay romance? Well, co-star Larry Sowell had a pleasant singing voice. And it was only 50 minutes long. Ho-Ho-Ho!

one last song by Donnie "Jager" Jay, SDGM XXXII E-mail: donniejay@hotmail.com

A Year Gone By

A

nother year has past, leaving behind events happy and sad, important and unimportant, things that have made a difference in our lives and things that mattered not at all. All these things are relative in how they affect our lives or not, because we are all individuals that really have different goals in the direction we want our lives to proceed. Things that are monumental to some of us, hold no concern for others at all. For me personally it has been a year of extreme highs and lows. On the positive side the top of the list has got to be To Do Productions, the theatrical production company I founded with others just after returning from my exodus in the Katrina aftermath. Having gone under changes since its original conception and gone through several partnerships, which just didn’t work out for one reason or another, it has finally struggled through its infancy and emerged as an upstanding addition to New Orleans growing theatrical scene. After a two year infancy it has matured into the premier force in presenting theatre for and about the GLBT community for the entire Gulf South. With the rather obvious pride of a single parent guiding his child to a productive place in it’s community, I find myself singing it’s praises a bit

to loudly at times. That is not to say that I did it alone, I have had an incredible amount of support from everyone concerned, from my past partners, past directors, the wonderful casts who have struggled at times to get the shows up and running, the volunteers who have worked backstage, in the box office, those working to promote the plays, and you, the faithful audiences who have attended and spread the word. Special thanks have got to go to David Fuller, for his undying support of these projects and to his undeniable artistic talents. From the backdrops to the fabulous “Mask of Murdock” in Now She Dances or the horses in the just closed Valhalla, they would not have had such eye-popping props and brilliant execution without your design and input. David, otherwise know as Anita Rich-Goodman, who also performs in my the Divas “R” Us drag show, you are a creative source to be reckoned with. A little insert here concerning Divas “R” Us, our little group which also includes Rikki Redd and Vanessa Carmichael will be returning for one show only on New Year's Eve, December 31st at 10:30pm., promptly of course – we do not do drag-time to The Golden Lantern, 1239 Royal Street. To all the critics, from all the various media in town I want to thank all of you for paying attention to To Do Productions from the very onset. Through your thoughtful and insightful critics of our productions, you have indeed helped us to grow. Our two last presentations; Naked Boys Singing, a co-production with The Marigny Theatre and Valhalla, have met with almost universal accolades, the credit for this of course rests with the talented and daring casts assembled for these projects. To the cast of Naked Boys Singing, Bryan Wager, Jason George, Marshal Harris, Philip Gordon, Travis Resoir and Julius Dietz, who bared their all for their art, thanks for making the dream that Robbie Thomas and I had come true. We had worked for over five years to bring this show to our city, you all gave it its life, and to Jonne Dendinger our musical director/ director you are pure magic, a talent to be unbelieved. Valhalla’s cast was more than likely the best ensemble cast assembled for any of our shows, with the possible exception of Take Me Out. From the novice Chris Weaver, who also bared it all for his art, to [continued on Main-24]

one last song ...from Main-22 seasoned veterans Shannon Williams, Keith Launey, Cammie West, Liz Mills and Carlos Gonzalez they all gave performance of such brilliance, that they brought house after house to their feet for standing ovations, including many of the critics. The credit for this again does not rest with me but rather with my resident director Glenn Meche. Glenn Meche, of course, is my lucky charm, one that I keep hidden jealously in my pocket. He is my proverbial Ace in the hole. In other words without him I wouldn’t know where I would be. Probably flipping burgers on Bourbon Street. Special mention also to Hector Trau, webmaster for Patrick Shannon who keeps our publicity and all we do out front

for all to learn about. Of course, there are so many others to mention, it would be impossible to list them all here. From Timm Holt, (my sometimes co-producer) the owner of Cowpokes where the Marigny Theatre is located, to his wonderful staff who have to put up with the diva producer and all her rantings and ravings. Suzanna, Steve Patrick, Regina and Debbie who are there whenever they are needed. Everyone else thanks from the bottom of my heart. Having just announced our 2008 season which includes; The Little Dog Laughed (if available) in April, Gertrude Stein and A Companion – June, Thrill Me- Decadence ( a co-production with The Marigny Theatre) and an original musical one piece, by local musician Randy Bibb in November, To Do is looking forward to it’s third full season.

W

ell life is not just a series of ups, as everyone knows, but also downs. I have lost to many friends in the past year. The talented and beautiful Tonisha Thompson (fondly know as simply T.T.), Robbie Thomas, for whom I fought so hard to get Naked boys Singing, Ineeda Shave and many others, all

of these from natural causes. But the most horrifying loss to me was that of Robin Malta, who was beaten to death on June 11th. For the many of us in both the gay and straight communities, Robin was a friend, who was always there with his smile and quips to bring some sunshine into our lives. He had preceded me in 1998 as Grand Marshal of Southern Decadence, and has a successful beauty salon along with his sister, Salon D'Malta. He was beaten to death inside his Marigny home which showed no signs of being broken into. The case galvanized the Marigny neighbors and prompted vigils and a march to stop the violence. The police questioned a person of interest, Robin’s former roommate Shawn Curry, who was later released. Months drug by with no announcement of any arrest in the case, but Robin's friends and neighbors never let it fade from the limelight. Holding benefits for many of the charities Robin held dear and keeping flyers posted everywhere concerning the incident. Finally an article appeared in the Times-Picayune on Friday, November 30th, 2007 announcing that the police had booked one 27-year old woman in the June highprofile murder of Robin. That was Laura Michelle Lapaz, who went by the street nickname “Seven”, who was already in Federal custody awaiting separate drug charges, she was booked with first-degree murder in Robin's case, as well as solicitation to commit murder. Police believe she may have hired a person or people to kill Robin. Lapaz, who is a felon, had been arrested with a bag that appeared to be meth, as well as a pistol. The case is scheduled for sometime this month, not the murder case, but the drug and the possession of the fire arms charge. What about the murder case? Nothing was mentioned about that, but the fact that the murder motive might have been that Robin owed her money for a drug deal was. What difference does it matter if he owed her money for any reason, even if it was for drugs? Does that justify murder? I think not, but I find it very strange indeed that it was presented in the press at all. It is here that I have to take a quick look back at the case of Lee Featherston, also know as Miss Fly, who was found dead in a ditch in Saint Bernard years ago. His murder ended in an arrest also, also rumored to be a drug deal gone bad, but to this day there has not been a trial. Could it be that somehow gay deaths and drug deals when combined to not warrant the same right to a speedy trial than others do? You could argue that Katrina has left our Justice Department overworked and understaffed, but Lee’s case preceded that by several years. I don’t think that Robin’s case will prove that easy for our Justice Department to just forget about. I know I for one will not ever let it lie. I shall raise my voice in ONE LAST SONG so that it will never be. Please let me know your thoughts on this. You may contact me at donniejay@hotmail.com.

Closing Out The Old

Looking To The New

ven though the Christmas season is a happy period, it has its sadness too. It means the end to another year of both the good and bad memories. We have lost friends and even gained some new ones, but the hurt of the losses is far greater than the new beginnings. I told you about Leonard last time, and this was a loss that affected me tremendously, and I’m still trying to get over the pain. Earlier this year, we also said goodbye to Truman, one of the most respected and lovable human beings I have ever known. His loss is still being felt, and it will be with some of us longer than others. He was just such a vibrant part of our lives that it still seems impossible that he could no longer be with us. David was also a part of my life, and I miss him tremendously. You don’t get over the loss of a friend. You just have to move on and deal with what life has to offer you. Even though we have losses in our lives, there are also lots of things to be thankful for, and we do this in a number of ways. We attend bal masque presentations and royalty-elect gatherings, and we take in the numerous shows that are major parts of the schedules at local entertainment venues such as Splash, George’s, and Hound Dogs. This spills over into several other places like the Phoenix, Oz, Lafitte’s, Sound Factory, Crystal’s and numerous other establishments in the Crescent City as well as clubs in Lafayette and Lake Charles. Along with the public places, we also manage to take in a lot of private parties. Taking trips, or mini-vacations, also occupy our time when we aren’t meeting the day to day job duties or attending school. It’s almost like time moves on but few changes take place. These changes are really happening but at a slower pace so that we don’t really realize what we have until something is gone or changed forever. Just as the sun rises in the morning, we also must face the setting sun, whether this may be in our work activities, or how we play, or even how we plan for future activities or goals. It is ever changing – slowly but surely – and there really isn’t that much we can do about it except move along and greet each day with renewed vigor and excitement. Life is a constant challenge. There are many things coming up right after New Years Day. Of course, we immediately think of Mardi Gras and all the activities taking place with the different krewes – and especially the activities centered around the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Parade. This soon comes and goes, and we find ourselves looking to Easter, but even this arrives too soon and is gone before we realize it. Then it’s Labor Day, the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and right back to where we are now, Christmas. Where did 2007 go?

lans for outstanding Mardi Gras balls are in full swing now. The Lafayette Royal Order of Unicorn will present their Bal Masque XXIV on Saturday, January 19, 2008 with their “ROU Schwarz, the Ultimate Toy Fantasy.” This is always a fun ball where everyone seems to get in on the action. Kenny Hebert is one of the guiding forces behind the success of this krewe’s continuing endeavors to present excellent programs, but he has a lot of help from some other avid supporters of this group. It is this combined effort on the part of so many that makes this ball so successful each year. Tickets for this one are only $20 per person, and this is well worth this amount. Again, the location is at 409 Cora Street in Lafayette. Guests may arrive at 7pm with the tableau beginning at 9pm. For further information, write to them at P.O. Box 3985, Lafayette, LA 70502. The Mystic Krewe of Apollo Shreveport’s theme is “Apollo Returns to Mount Olympus.” It is their Bal Masque XXII and will also be held on Saturday, January 19, 2008. It will be held at the Municipal Auditorium, 705 Elvis Presley Blvd., in Shreveport. Doors open at 7pm, and tableau begins at 8:30pm. The tickets are $75 per person. Their mailing address is P.O. Box 4918, Shreveport, LA 71134 or you can go on-line to check them out at www.mkashreveport.com. The Korner Lounge invites everyone to join in the after the ball party at 800 Louisiana Avenue. Mark your calendars for a trip to Dallas on February 2, 2008. This marks the date set by the Mystic Krewe of Apollo Dallas for their Bal Masque II to take place in the Dallas Convention Center Arena. This theme will be “A Lone Star Mardi Gras,” and you know if Ronnie Wise has anything to do with it, the night will be one to remember. Ronnie is the returning King Apollo Dallas I. This ball will take you on a tour of the great state of Texas, and they promise to hit all the major cities and a few smaller ones along the way. Their ball this year was really something else. They themed it “Coming Out in Dallas,” and what a way to bring a great bal masque presentation to this city. Highlights included the amazing costumes, choreographed dancing, a variety of entertainment, and, of course, the crowing of the first royalty for Big D. Now they are ready for an encore, and the prospects are for a great show. The Baton Rouge Krewe of Apollo will celebrate their Bal Masque XXVII at the zoo – “They All Asked For You.” This krewe was formed in August of 1981, and each year they bring forth some fabulous shows for all to enjoy. In fact, they seem to constantly outdo themselves in creativity. Since 1989, the krewe members have been actively involved in special events and fund-raisers to help individuals in the community who are affected by HIV and AIDS. In 1993, the krewe established a special fund for this ongoing project. Reigning King Apollo XXVI Scott Blanchard and his Queen Apollo XXVI Eddy Vargas will relinquish their

here is only one week left until Christmas, which really means that there are only thirteen days left until the big New Year’s Eve. December is always a great month in Acadiana, and now that finals are over, all that’s needed to finish out the year are some kickass parties, and the Lafayette Downtown has them in abundance. From now until well into the new year, Sound Factory and its Back Side will be the hottest party spot in South Louisiana. So start marking your calendars because you sure don’t want to miss any of the biggest celebrations of the year. On Saturday, December 22, Sound Factory and Back Side are hosting their Annual Christmas Party and Show. The fabulous Stephanie Stevens, along with some of her most talented friends, will be providing the night’s entertainment. And if it’s anything like in years past, it will definitely be a night you won’t want to miss. And just over a week later, on Monday, December 31, Sound Factory and Back Side will have their Giant New Year’s Eve Extravaganza. There’ll be champagne and party favors, not to mention the balloon drop at midnight that’s packed full of cash and prizes. It’ll definitely be a night to remember. So make sure you plan ahead to bring in 2008 at Lafayette’s premiere gay bars, Sound Factory and Back Side. And in between these two incredibly festive nights, don’t forget about every-

thing else Sound Factory and Back Side have to offer. They are open seven days a week and have a weekly lineup that is second to none. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. The rest of the week at Sound Factory and Back Side is just as entertaining. Between karaoke on Tuesday nights and Show Night on Sundays, they pack each night with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are fabulous drink specials and the unforgettable dance music spun by DJ Huggies. Sound Factory has a quieter more relaxed side, the Back Side, where you can take a break from the loud music and socialize with your friends, or make some new ones. It’s two bars for the price of one, and it’s right in the heart of Downtown Lafayette. It’s no wonder so many people travel from all over to come out in Lafayette. The holiday season can be particularly stressful, especially having to sometimes deal with family members that you try to avoid the rest of the year. Just remember, you have another more friendly family in the Downtown. When it all gets to be a bit too much, come by Sound Factory and Back Side and wind down with your other family. There’s nothing like a refreshing cocktail to take the edge off. Until next time, have fun and be safe. I’ll see you around town.

crowns at the 2008 ball to King Apollo XXVII John Sallinger and Queen Apollo XXVII Lester Mut. For complete information on this local group, go to their website at www.apollobatonrouge.com. Bal Masque XXVII will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2008 in the Baton Rouge RiverCenter. The Birmingham Krewe of Apollo has scheduled their Ball Masque XXXII for February 16, 2008. Their theme is “Apollo’s Wide World of Sports,” and it will be held at the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham. Their website is www.mkabirmingham.com. Their theme is one that holds great promise for a very entertaining evening. Bal Masque XXXII in Lafayette has a theme of “Gods, Goddness, Kings, and of course Queens,” to be held on Monday, December 31, 2007 at the Heymann Center Ball Room. This is always a lively gathering. You can learn more about this krewe at http://www.kreweofapollo.com.

only connection with George was through his cousin and a fellow writer, the late, great Lorena Dureau, one of Louisiana’s most talented authors. Her book about the last casket girls in New Orleans should be on everyone’s reading list. It is probably out of print now, but copies should be available via the Internet. John Wayne and Phil keep steaming up the scene – well, not in public, but this twosome was just meant to be. Phil was just the dish that John Wayne needed to appease his appetite. Wherever you go, you always seem to run into people from out of the past. Last week while I was out Christmas tree shopping (only the ones potted up for me), I ran into Kevin at Home Depot. He mentioned to me that he did miss Hibiscus Bookstore and all the good times he had shopping there. These comments are always surfacing. I guess the last time I ran into Kevin was at Hibiscus. Just think – it’s been over two years gone now. It just goes to show you how time passes so quickly. Another Kevin, of the Jonathan variety, continues to build on his personal news business, and he is constantly there for friends who depend on his helpful hints and great work ethics. In addition to helping out friends here in Red Stick, he often goes to visit with Florida friends, where he spends his time in a “fix-up mode.” Kevin is just one of those genuine and personable human beings who you know is always going to be there for you. obert and Brandon are looking forward to completing restoration of their home in Spanish Town. It’s coming along nicely, and it looks as if it just might be one of the showplace homes of the downtown area. Anyone collecting George Dureau has to be of the enormously talented variety. Even though I don’t have any of his works in my personal collection, I admire those who do for the uniqueness of his creations. My

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-4 of my best friends, and I enjoy my time with him. I ran into Todd, Jules, and Donald last week at my favorite Lebanese restaurant over in CitiPlace. It was a reunion of sorts. I guess it had been a year almost since I last saw Todd. We spent a great hour dining on delicious food and catching up on the latest happenings in Baton Rouge and in New Orleans. Wine sessions on Damon’s front porch are frequent since the weather has been so agreeable lately. Sometimes, these turn into mini-gatherings of old friends who are just interested in keeping up with things. Michael is looking forward to the new year. Being the manager of Rudolph’s Christmas Store doesn’t leave him much time to enjoy life around him, especially from the beginning of September and leading up to Christmas day. I’m not sure I could stand Christmas all year, but he must like it. He’s been there for many years and even gave up horticulture for this. At least, he can do his own personal horticulture interests on the side. In fact, this is his outlet and probably keeps him from sticking his head out the front door and screaming. I haven’t seen too much of the great TTT this year. His schedule seems to keep him really busy, and if his regular job doesn’t hold him down, his church work definitely does. I think he must spend more time at work and church than he does at home. Did I get that right, sweetie? David is always such a welcome sight when I go to Splash. He is always there to

give me a hug and a kind word or two. Last week, I should have had my camera with me. I could have taken a picture of Cory mopping the floors. My goodness! That was a first for me. He is usually sitting behind his desk, directing employees, or hiding from my camera. I don’t have any problems taking pictures when I go to George's or Hound Dogs. The owners and customers are very open to being in Ambush. I do, however, make it a point to ask. There is this one hot stud that is always in the pictures I want to use, and one of these days I may slip up and use one. However, I watch carefully. For someone who doesn’t want people to know he’s gay, he certainly knows how to play the crowd – and one individual, who I won’t name, but they are one hot, steaming combination of love and lust. Sam is busy cleaning out his storage warehouse and adding things to his antique shop here in the capital city. People are shocked at what he has on display, and as word gets around, his business continues to grow. He even has an adult section which isn’t bad at all. You need to check this out over on the corner of Weller and Pawtucket. Patrick seems to be doing well too. Many of you will remember him as having worked at Hibiscus for so long. He is living near Sam’s antique store, finally got rid of that old brown truck, and is getting out and about more. He still leads a very private existence, but this seems to fit him, and if he’s happy, then that’s what it is all about. I decided to put up a Christmas tree this year. Normally, I’m out and about, [continued on Expose-20]

texas, the lone star state Houston Museum of Fine Arts Concludes International Pompeii Tour in 2008

Arts, Houston, where it will be on view from March 2 to June 22, 2008 in the Caroline Wiess Law Building, 1001 Bissonnet Street. The show´s bronze and marble

n their final terrifying hours on August 24 and 25, A.D. 79, residents of Pompeii and the nearby coastal resort towns of Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Terzigno in southern Italy gathered objects precious to them and tried to escape the fury of Mount Vesuvius. The erupting volcano eventually buried Pompeii under 10 feet of ash and pumice, then waves of superheated gases and boiling mud traveling down Vesuvius´s slopes at speeds of nearly 100 miles an hour brought instant death to all still remaining in Pompeii and the other cities. The thriving, prosperous communities lay buried— silenced and forgotten for 1,700 years before being rediscovered through excavations which revealed that this horrific tragedy had preserved a wealth of information about the people, their belongings, and how they lived. While work continues at Pompeii today, the city´s archaeological superintendent, Pietro Giovanni Guzzo, has organized an exhibition of nearly 500 objects excavated largely in the last 15 years. These new finds, supported by well-documented research, greatly expand what is known about the people of Pompeii and their neighbors, and what happened just before their deaths. The exhibition, Pompeii: Tales from an Eruption, closes its international tour at the Museum of Fine

pompeii tour ...from Expose-18 sculptures, large-scale frescoes, jewelry, tools, table silver, armor, coins, skeletons, and plaster casts of the bodies of the victims now tell the stories of life at the Bay of Naples in the days of the early Roman Empire. “Houston is fortunate to be one of the few venues in the world to show this heartrending and yet uplifting exhibition,” said Peter C. Marzio, MFAH director. “It speaks at once to man´s creativity and achievement—in the first century and in the years of ongoing excavations—and to our fears. This exhibition offers visitors the rare opportunity to see a number of objects being shown for the first time outside of Italy and to contemplate the lives and the world of the people who owned them.”

At the MFAH, the exhibition will be installed in the expansive Upper Brown Pavilion of the Law Building. Current photographs of Pompeii, including a panorama of one of the city´s main streets stretching nearly the length of the 300-foot gallery, will provide an overall sense of place and identify specific locations where victims, artworks, and other objects have been found. The exhibition includes about 240 objects from Pompeii, more than 100 each from Herculaneum and Oplontis, and about 20 from Terzigno. Notable works from Pompeii include an exquisite fulllength statue of Apollo, god of music, found at the House of Menander, a wealthy inlaw of Emperor Nero; a floor mosaic with a central image of Medusa found at the House of the Centenary; and a wall from the Building of the Triclinia with a deep red

fresco depicting Nero as Apollo playing the lyre. From Herculaneum there are a marble head of an Amazon, a full-length statue of the goddess Hera, and a cast of 32 skeletons found in a boat shelter near the sea shore. The sculptures, both traveling for the first time, were found at the Villa of the Papyri, which may have been the home of Julius Caesar´s father-inlaw, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Cesonius. From all four sites there are numerous examples of ancient coins and gold jewelry—necklaces, armbands, rings, earrings, and pendants. “With about two-thirds of Pompeii now excavated, the citizens´ appreciation of fine art and craft continues to reveal itself,” said Frances Marzio, MFAH curator in charge of the exhibition in Houston. “Coupling recent discoveries with information

about the places they were found and what people tried to take with them as they fled deepens our understanding of what these ancient people considered important.” The City in A.D. 79 At the time of the eruption, Pompeii was a busy, sophisticated port city with a population of 10,000 to 20,000. The narrow stone streets were lined with shops and taverns. A new aqueduct system provided water to the city´s fountains and running water in most homes. Herculaneum, located about nine miles northwest of Pompeii, was a resort home to about 5,000 wealthy residents of Rome, including Roman senators. The country villages of Oplontis and Terzigno were situated in between. The prosperity of the area, ironically, stemmed from the vineyards and olive orchards planted in the rich volcanic soil. The Caroline Wiess Law Building of the MFAH is located at 1001 Bissonnet Street. The museum is open to the public Tuesday and Wednesday, 10am-5pm; Thursday, 10am-9pm.; Friday and Saturday, 10am-7pm; and Sunday, 12:15-7pm. The museum is closed on Monday, except for holidays. hot tails of red stick ...from EX-5 visiting or traveling, but I felt a blue Christmas coming on. In fact, my white tree is covered with my favorite color ornaments and lights. With the big day almost here, I’m about through with my shopping, and I think everyone will be pleased with my gifts. Gerry and I decided not to do gifts for each other. We are just going to exchange dinners. He pays one week. I pay the next. It works out fine that way, and the company is better than the presents anyway. Hopefully, BC Boy won’t have to work this holiday season, but when you serve the public, you never know when the call will come and you have to take care of business. This guy is great. He would have made a great doctor, but things don’t always work out the way they should. He is still in the medical profession, and he seems to be quite happy with his life. Luther has been a nice part of my life in recent months. I know the meetings are usually at George’s, but when you have that beautiful smile and that gracious personality in front of you, things just don’t get any better. This guy is just one of those very nice human beings that can easily make your day more enjoyable with his charm and warmth – a winning combination to make you feel good all over. I’ve been having problems with my old cell phone lately, so I just bought a new one. I was told that Trace had tried to contact me several times the other day, but somehow the calls didn’t make it to me. Like that commercial you see on television, I could be talking away and then there would be no one on the line – just silence. In a flash, I found myself talking to myself. I’m about ready to get Trace out to our favorite restaurant again. I don’t like to while away too much time without seeing him in person. He is a super nice friend. Well, 2007 is just about history, and we have so much to look forward to in 2008. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and that goes for a Happy New Year too. Just remember to honor the season for what it really stands for and keep good thoughts for everyone. Time passes quickly. Live it wisely and honorably.
