Ambush Celebrates 26 Years of Service, 1982-2008

his first edition of 2008 celebrates 26 years of service to the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender community of the Gulf South. Ambush had its humble beginnings in Baton Rouge, Louisiana first launching in 1982. Moving to New Orleans in 1985, Ambush set up shop on world famous Bourbon Street, and expanded to cover the huge Gulf South market from Texas to Florida. After carefully selecting the best professionals in the journalistic arena, Ambush began a roller coaster ride of success. In 2005, the devastating effects of Hurricane’s Katrina and Rita almost brought the publication to an end. In spite of the obstacles which lay ahead, Ambush owes an eternal debt of gratitude to its many advertisers who came back immediately on board, thus saving the oldest surviving GLBT publication in the Gulf South, allowing it to continue its service and commitment to community. Although Ambush acknowledges its gratitude to its advertisers, it also must express its thanks to its staff and its numerous readers both in print and on-line across the Gulf South who continue to patronize the publication.

olleyball New Orleans is proud to present the 25th annual Mardi Gras Classic Invitational Tournament celebrating On the Silver Side of the Crescent Moon. Always held on MLK weekend, the activities begin Friday, January 11th from 7 to 10pm, with registration at Napoleon’s Itch. Oz host the After Registration Party beginning at 7pm. The Reffing and Score keeping Clinics are held at the Marriott Convention Center Hotel beginning at 8pm. On Saturday, January 12th, Pool play will be held at the Alario Center and Hilton Athletic Club from 8am to roughly 6:30pm. The Seeding Party/ Announcement will be hosted at the Parade Disco at 8pm. Sunday, January 13th features Double Elimination Tournament Play at both facilities starting at 8am. Sunday night, the Awards Banquet & Party will be hosted at Generations Hall beginning at 7pm. This year, the tournament boast 80 teams with some 560 players coming in from all over the country including the cities of Albuquerque, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Portland, Puerto Rico, Raleigh, San Antonio, San Francisco, Tampa, and Vancouver. Even after the Hurricane's Katrina and Rita, MGC 23 had roughly 40 teams competing. Last year, the Classic had 87 teams come and play, the largest turnout ever. For the 2009 MGC 26, the tournament will have more court space available and should be able to host almost 100 teams. A portion of the proceeds benefits the PFLAG scholarship fund. Volleyball New Orleans is hoping to raise enough funds to give to additional charities as well this

the "official" dish ...from Main-4 claimed the Big 10 Title for the second straight year, winning the title outright with a 14-3 victory over Michigan in the regular season finale on Nov. 17. LSU (11-2, 6-2 SEC) makes its second straight appearance in New Orleans for a BCS Bowl game and will play for the BCS National Championship for the second time in four years, claiming the 2004 title with a 21-14 win over Oklahoma, also in New Orleans. In three seasons in Baton Rouge, Les Miles has led LSU to a 33-6 record (61-27 in seven seasons as a head coach) and guided the Tigers to their first conference title in four years with a 2114 win over Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta on Dec. 1. “It is certainly my pleasure to welcome the two great universities involved in our great Allstate BCS National Championship Game,” said Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Paul Hoolahan. “We are proud for the opportunity to host them in a championship setting. It is a wonderful chance for both great teams to compete for a national

title and have the opportunity to contest on the field the greatness of both superior football programs. I think it affords the rest of the country the opportunity to see football at its best.” “We are thrilled to have Ohio State and LSU in the Allstate BCS National Championship Game,” said Allstate Sugar Bowl President Ray Jeandron. “These teams have ranked among the top five in the nation defensively all season, while also showing big-play ability on offense. This ranks as one of the best matchups in championship game history and should make for an outstanding contest.” In his first season as a starter, Ohio State QB Todd Boeckman earned firstteam All-Big Ten honors. While leading the league in passing efficiency, he completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 2,171 yards and 23 touchdowns. Another first-team AllBig Ten selection, RB Chris Wells had eight 100-yard rushing games in running for 1,463 yards and 14 touchdowns. WR Brian Robiskie leads the team in receptions (50), receiving yards (885) and touchdowns (10).

LSU QB Matt Flynn is also in his first season as a starter, passing for 2,233 yards and 17 touchdowns, ranking eighth in school history in single-season passing yards. Flynn also has four rushing touchdowns. Sophomore QB Ryan Perrilloux started in place of an injured Flynn in the SEC Championship Game, earning MVP honors in the win. RB Jacob Hester leads the rushing attack with 1,017 yards and 11 touchdowns. WR Demetrius Byrd leads the receiving corps with seven TD receptions. The strength of both teams is their defense. Ohio State ranks first nationally in total defense (225.25 yards per game), scoring defense (10.67), pass defense (148.17 yards per game), and pass efficiency defense (93.97). By comparison, LSU ranks third nationally in total defense (283.85 yards per game), 20th in scoring defense (19.62 points per game), ninth in pass defense (180.77 yards per game), and third pass efficiency defense (96.16). This will be just the third meeting between the two schools, playing a home-

and-home series in 1987 and 1988. The two teams played to a 13-all tie on Sept. 26, 1987 in Baton Rouge. One year later, Ohio State beat the Tigers 36-33 in Columbus on Sept. 24, 1988. This will be Ohio State’s fourth Bowl appearance in New Orleans, where the Buckeyes are 1-2. They lost to Alabama, 35-6, in the 1978 Sugar Bowl. Ohio State made back-to-back appearances in 1998 and 1999. OSU fell to Florida State, 31-14 in ‘98, but won the following year with a 2414 victory over Texas A&M. LSU will make its fourth Bowl appearance in New Orleans this decade and 14th overall. The Tigers are 6-7 in Bowl games in the Crescent City, and have won their last three games here (2002 Sugar Bowl: 47-34 win over Illinois; 2004 National Championship Game: 21-14 win over Oklahoma; 2007 Sugar Bowl: 41-14 win over Notre Dame).

re you ready to Mambo? Mardi Gras Mambo, that is! Well, it’s time to get ready if you’re not. Carnival Season officially kicks off on January 6th, Twelfth Night. The GLBT Community is busier that ever with the shortest season possible upon us. In case you are not aware, Mardi Gras is February 5th this year, a mere 30 days after Twelfth Night. Those Krewes that put on all the wonderful bal masques are busy, busy, busy right now. It is just a few weeks for ball captains to nail down the last minute details and for members to finish up their costumes. Believe me, there is more hot glue being used as you read this, than you can imagine.

But if irreverence and satire are to your liking, make sure you catch Krewe du Vieux parade through the Marigny and French Quarter. It is a walking parade with smaller floats that the big boys but none the less a great time. Krewe du Vieux parades on Saturday, January 19th at 7pm with the theme Magical Misery Tour. This is always a great way to kick-off the parade season.

The Krewe of Amon Ra starts this out with their Bal Masque on Saturday, January 12th at 8pm. Amon Ra has the gorgeous venue of English Turn Country Club this year. Tickets are available from Amon Ra members. Sunday, January 13th will find the Krewe of Petronius producing their annual extravaganza at the Scottish Rite Temple. The ball will begin at 7pm. The Mystic Krewe of Satyricon will be holding their 6th Bal Masque on Sunday, January 27th, at 8pm. The Krewe of Armeinius will hold their Bal Masque XL on Saturday, February 2nd at 8pm at the Alario Center in Westwego for the second year. Mark's Story

ark slowly opened his eyes, and through their sleepiness he glanced around the room. He had absolutely not a single hint of an idea on earth where he was, and what was worse he could not recall the events of the ending hour or so from the night before, which had led him to this room. Glancing around he realized that the place was well appointed; almost elegant in its simplicity, much nicer than some of the places he had awakened in this past year. Hell, he silently castigated himself why did he allow his self to get so loaded as to place himself in these situations? In the not so distance past he would have never allowed this to happen to him. At that time, which wasn’t so long ago, he may have had a few libations to relax himself, but at least he could remember whom he had left with and where they had gone. He could remember where they had met and the name of whose bed he had crawled into. But that was the past and this was now. The room was still pretty dark, but it belied the time he was sure, the blinds were drawn and very little daylight was managing to filter through them. Carefully as not to awaken the guy still wrapped in his arms, he reached for his watch on the nightstand. The face glowed in the dark; he could see it just fine. Eight thirty seven it read. He remembered the night Jim had given it to him; it was on his twenty-fourth birthday, a little over five years ago. Jim joked that now even in the darkest of clubs he could see the time and be home by the time he had gotten off of work. He smiled to himself at the very thought of home. They had a home then, in their second year of their relationship, it was theirs, and they had purchased it together with money they had both saved and an inheritance Jim had received from his grandparents. That seemed so long ago and more than once he had wished that it was all still the same and that he had the welcoming place to go back to. But that was all gone now and of course it was his entire fault. Had he not been such a smuck and kept his pants on like he should have none of it would have happened. What was that saying, the one that has been said a

million times over; a stiff one has no conscious, will his was the proof in the pudding. It wasn’t that he was not satisfied with his home life, it was just that an opportunity had presented its self that at the time seemed could not have been turned down. He realized the next morning that it could have and should have as he was dressing to go home. It was already eight o’clock in the morning and Jim would have been home for almost an hour by then. His mind was searching for a valid excuse, but just staring at the gift on his wrist, he knew that it would be futile. Well there would be an argument more than likely, then he would get the silent treatment for a few days, then it would pass and Jim would jump his bones once again and all would be forgiven once again. He had gotten dressed that morning so many years ago now, kissed the trick good-bye and headed on home. Driving up to the house he did not see Jim’s car in the driveway, he smiled to himself. How many times was this man he loved going to pull this stunt on him? Parking down the block or around the corner was a thing Jim had done before to make Jake worry a bit, and he admitted to himself now that it had worked more than once. Well not this time, he thought to himself, I’m on to that game my friend. So, needless to say when he walked into the house, he was more than surprised to see that Jim was not at home. He bound the stairs two or three at a time, half expecting to find him waiting in the bed naked. But there was no one there either. No, a wave of fear crossed over him and he started to worry. Then he noticed the closet open and several of Jim’s dresser drawers had been rifled through and a lot of things seemed to be missing. He noticed that Jim’s suitcases were missing and he sank slowly onto the side of the bed his stomach churning. He remembered that night now as if it were yesterday, but it wasn’t and now he was lying in a strangers bed, holding someone who’s name he couldn’t remember, and feeling nothing. Well nothing was not exactly true, he knew that he had been ridden pretty well the night before that he could feel and at once he knew the stud had been hung pretty large. The body in his arms moved just slightly readjusting himself and rolling over on his back, Jake stared at the guy. He wasn’t bad at all, not like some of the guys he had awakened with from an inebriated state. His hair was almost jet black, a little long perhaps, but it

fell nicely, cut framing a well defined masculine face, proportioned all to well to be true. The guy looked rather familiar in some way. It must have just been from the night before Jake surmised. At once his eyes opened, a whirlpool of deep blue stared over at Jake and the man smiled up at him. “Hey” he whispered in a raspy somehow sexy voice. “Hey” was all Jake could answer back as he was turned over on his side his back facing the other man, his buttocks exposed and vulnerable. He could feel the other man turning sideways pressing against him; he could feel the firmness of flesh pressing against his firm cheek muscles. His visits to the gym had paid off for him defining his own body. With no other words between them and nor any emotional feelings Jake spread his legs a little to allow the nameless stranger easier access. The air was warm as it brushed every so lightly across Jim’s body, the sun had just barely risen in the morning sky, they were lying alone on the beach there was nary another soul in sight. This was one of the many joys to living in Key West during the winter months. Just lying, with his best buddy on the warm sand, listening to the ocean lap against the shore and most of all feeling the soothing warmth of the sun penetrating his body. Jock lay nestled in his arms his head buried in his right hand shoulder on his stomach enjoying the quiet of the beach in the early morning hours. There were no tourist on the beach yet, but they would be arriving soon in droves after their Continental breakfasts. That was probably the most pleasant amenities of the many B and B’s that had sprung up in the Keys in the mid nineties, that lovely assortment of pastries, quiche and morning coffee, teas and maybe mimosas. He was, as fate would have it the owner of one of them, a male only property called “Shadows in the Palms.” He had put the down payment on it just a month after him and his ex Jake had sold their home up north. It had been a wise move for him and a very successful one, so now he had employees to do the work for him and that meant all his time was his own. It had hurt him badly the break up with Jake, for he truly loved the young man. Jake was the second lover of his young life, he was just a little older by two years than Jake was. They were so happy with each other at the start that he just knew they would belong to each other for ever. That’s the way things happen in books and the fairy tales he had read as a child. But he had come to know in his adult life that the fairy tales in the real world didn’t always end up that way. Oh, there were exceptions for sure, couples who had been together for very long periods of time, one such couple had stayed at the B and B just at the beginning of this season. Samuel and Stephen were their names, and they had been together since they were teenagers and had come to this sun drenched Mecca celebrating their fiftieth anniversary. Samuel and Stephan, he smiled to himself that is what they wished to be called, not Sam and Steve, pretentious queens that they were, as they had reminded him every time he spoke to them using the nick names. They were so fussy, that he could not understand how they had been together for so long to start with. But as their stay continued on, it became evident that not only did they share their likes and dislikes, but they also

shared a number of tricks, which they escorted into rooms in a most unnecessary way. Disguising them as delivery men or what ever. But as many as they may have snuck upstairs he never caught any of the guys leaving, so he might have questioned them. But he had recognized more than one of them, they were among the young men that strutted around the beach dressed in the briefest of thongs, displaying all their wares for the world to see. Wares that was readily available for a price. Well if that was the secret to longevity in a relationship, he really didn’t want any part of it he surmised. He rolled over a bit and brushed some hair that had fallen in front of Jock's eyes out of his face and gently kissed his cheek. Aloud he said, “At least I have you to keep me company Jock.” Sitting up caused Jock to spring up and start jumping around. He had become excited by Jim getting up and somehow knew it was time to head on home. Jim smiled at the dog, his “My best friend in the whole wide world,” he said scratching Jock's furry back. He started walking back towards his B and B, just as the first few tourists were staggering onto the beach, their arms over burdened with everything they needed for a day at the beach. Umbrellas, beach chairs, blankets and thermoses filled more than not with premixed Bloody Marys. The nameless guy had finished with Mark, who was lying there like a limp rag doll, spent and aching. He may not remember the guy’s name, and he was thinking of a polite way to get it, but the one thing he was certain of this dude knew how to satisfy another. He was deliberating the different ways he could inquire about this person’s moniker without sounding like a dunce, when all of a sudden the guy sat up and stretched. “By the way, my name is Bruce.” “Of course it is, you told me that last night. I may have been a little loaded, but I remember.” Mark lied. “Why in the hell did you call me Jim, in the middle of it all?” He reached over for Mark and pulled him in closer. “I did? Sorry about that, it must have been the heat of the moment.” “Is that your lover’s name?” “I told you last night I have no lover, or anybody in my life.” “So why Jim?” “Just someone I knew, years ago, you reminded me of him that’s all.” “He must have left quite an impression on you.” “He did.” He smiled up at Bruce and closed his eyes. Daydreaming some people called it, lying there in Bruce's arms he thought of Jim. They were much alike, their hair, their eyes, their size, they could have been brothers. He feigned being asleep and before he could even think about it he was. He dreamed of the year and a half he had spent in Jim's arms, in his bed and he could even feel the sorry in his sleep for what he had done to break them up. Somewhere in the background of his dream he could hear music playing, it sounded so familiar, and it was the ONE LAST SONG, he and Jim had danced together to. he Austin Babtist Women: Widow Modine Murphy, Ima Spinster, Betty Bea Blessing and OFeelYa Faith, raised a whopping $2,769 for the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Austin during the ABW’s 21st Christmas Spectacular: A Very Pink Christmas at Rainbow Cattle Company in Austin, Texas. The event also included the talents of emcee Deacon Dave, former Miss RCC She Gotta Mustache, Sandi Shores, former Miss RCC and current Austin Empress Simone Riviera, and the ABW's first grand daughter Kelly Kline. TGRA was on hand taking the donations at the door as well as selling jello shots and 50/50 raffle tickets. TapeLenders donated a 7 ft. pre-lighted Christmas tree for auction. The bar put out trays of finger food snacks. The crowd was huge and had the working staff of the Breast Cancer Resource Center present. The Babtist Women opened the show with how they first met in the orphanage with a Hard Knock Life and Miss Hannigan’s take on Little Girls. Later in the show they did a 50s Christmas cocktail party atmosphere and closed the show with their current upbeat signature Gospel flavor.

Mona Lisa Continues to Amaze

ona Lisa has to be one of the best Italian, Mediterranean restaurants in the French Quarter that continues to amaze you with each visit. Located at 1212 Royal Street, the eatery has the rustic charm of one found on the streets of Rome, Italy. Make sure and check out the Specials board when entering the restaurant. There's usually a special appetizer or two, an entree and special dessert. On our last visit we had to try the Spinach & Artichoke Dip (4.50) with crisp garlic bread strips. Chock full of spinach, artichoke and parmesan, it practically melts in your mouth. Be warned, it is a generous portion. And if you're a fan of Caesar Salad (7.75), then Spinach & Artichoke Dip make sure you don't miss out on our favorite one in the entire city. Their special Caesar dressing loaded with garlic is to die for and the crisp croutons and garlic bread (pizza slice) will send you over the top. It is also served with all entrees. Next up was the Mona Lisa Special Combo 10" Pizza (12.50) served with Ceasar Salad with Garlic Bread heaping portions of pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, onions, mushrooms, green peppers and black olives with jalapenos and anchovies optional. If you like pizza, this one will not leave you disappointed. You can also get a 12" or 14" one, depending on your appetite or how many are in your party to experience this Italian delight. A Glorious Il Trittico

he New Orleans Opera Association’s recent production of Giacomo Puccini’s trio of one act operas Il Trittico was a sumptuous success as performed on the stage of McAlister Auditorium on the Tulane U. campus. Triumphantly directed with great understanding and artistry by Maestro Robert Lyall, the orchestra was in top form flooding the venue with beautiful sound. Jay Jackson’s stage direction of this trio of one act operas was brilliant as was the idea to set each of them in the French Quarter of New Orleans circa 1959. It is my belief that Puccini would have loved and applauded this numinous production. The three operas, Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi are classic examples of human emotions set to celestial music as the characters face a gamut of character studies beginning with jealousy and murder, guilt, motherly love, grace and miracles, and human greed at its most comical, respectively. The cast was an astonishing example of stupendous singers/actors, some playing several parts. Soprano Mardi Byers was effectively moving in the role of Suor Angelica, the nun who mourns the death of her child taken away from her at birth in the aria Senza mamma, which she sang with power, grace, and a solid pure soprano voice, exposing her heart and machop chop ...from Main-17

ternal suffering in the melodies of Puccini’s great score. Byers was also memorable in her role of Giorgetta, the adulterous wife in Il Tabarro, finding much spice and earthiness in her strong voice. As her betrayed bargeman/lover baritone Frederick Burchinal established a dark sinister tone early which was especially chilling while singing the aria during which he murders her and pulls her under his cloak (tabarro). He then proved his abilities to sing and play a role at the opposite end of the emotional spectrum doing a delicious and delightful turn about in the title role of Gianni Schicchi about as the charming, disarming and handsome cad. Tenor Bryan Hymel sang with gusto using his strong voice to express the emotions both delicate and vibrant in his roles as Luigi (Il Tabarro) and the youthful Rinuccio of Schicchi. Mezzo Soprano Gwendolyn Jones was stunning in her role as the “etched in acid” character of Suor Angelica’s aristocratic aunt doubling as La Ciesca in Schicchi. Of course we all couldn’t wait to hear the aria O mio babbino caro was sung with great charm and beauty by the lovely young soprano Angela Mannino as Lauretta in Schicchi and mezzo soprano Cindy Sadler was a joy to hear and see as she dominated the stage playing the role of Zita. All minor roles were sung without fault and a “Big Easy” stage presence. This production was exquisitely beautiful with sets designed by G. Alan Rusnak. Costuming by Charlotte Lang was a consummate joy capturing a 1950s look with detail and delight. Gorgeous lighting was by Don Darnutzer. This was indeed a numinous and unforgettable production by our own New Orleans Opera Association. What a miracle great opera can be when done with such perfection and joy!

La Traviata

s some of you may know I have been recovering from a couple of eye operations which did not permit me to finish and publish some reviews in time for deadline. So for your press copy regarding them I submit the following comments: The Jefferson Performing Arts Society presented a lovely version of Verdi’s La Traviata which I was anxious to see and hear because soprano Nancy Ross was scheduled to sing the difficult but beautiful role of the immortal “fallen woman” Violetta. I had heard Ms. Ross sing this role once before and I was very moved. Her stage presence, acting abilities, and beautiful voice reminded me of that great actress and singer, Maria Callas. So I was ready to see and hear our own local Maria Callas sing those beautiful and difficult arias again. But Ms. Ross was indisposed with that horror of all great singers, laryngitis so twenty four hours before curtain, Amy Pfrimmer was given the role. And she was remarkable. It was a miracle to me to witness such an amazing performance. Ms. Pfrimmer was able to tackle those coloratura cascades of melody with clar-

ity, those soft heart breaking pianissimo moments with a delicate power and her acting abilities were exemplary. Brava, brava, brava. Ms. Pfrimmer is a beautiful young woman with a remarkable voice, strong and powerful but able to glimmer with the soft vocal caresses in the many emotional moments that occur in this dramatic tragic opera. Ms. Pfrimmer looked wonderful singing with a talent that was equal to her own in youthful looks and strong vocal ability beside her lover Alfredo, sung by tenor Fillippo Pina Castiglioni. Castiglioni sang with great passion and vigor. He was one of the sexiest Alfredo I’ve ever seen. As his father, Germont, baritone Mauro Augustini, sang with warmth and delicacy with a rich and well centered baritone. Conductor Dennis G. Assaf directed the JPAS Symphony Orchestra with vigor. Yet Mr. Assaf demonstrated a tender understanding of the score, bringing the sound down during the several softly touching and lyrical duets. The orchestra sounded lush and romantic under his baton. Massimo Perzzutti directed the entire cast with a clear sense of cinematic vision. He created many lovely fleeting tableau on the stage dressed with a minimalist stark set in the production designs conceived by Shannon R. Miller. The chorus was especially vigorous and clear as directed by Donna F. Clavijo and

Trish McLains colorful costumes were a rich contribution to the production. This was another JPAS production of merit that brought high art and beauty to the people of our area. Mr. Assaf and the entire cast is commended and applauded.

Valhalla A Miracle On Marigny Street

o one knows where, when, or why it happens and it rarely does happen, but IT happened recently at the Marigny Theatre on Marigny Street. IT happened when Paul Rudnick’s play, Valhalla in a recent premiere production of Donald James To Do Production Company was staged at this little regional theater magically directed by Glenn Meche. I think it helped put another bright spotlight on this fledgling company. On a small stage with no real set and only actors in bright costumes, this dark comedy which explores man’s often unattainable quest for beauty-from Barvaria’s gay Mad King Ludwig to a young dreamer in Texas growing up before WWII - and the ultimately tragic cost of their blind ambitions became the ineffable vehicle for one of those IT theatrical experiences. One critic I know wept. Another came to almost every performance. This Valhalla caused the audience to become so swept up in

ell our weather has certainly had its up and downs lately, but it is basically winter and even if the weather doesn’t feel like it I’m in a wintery mood. So it may be warm while I’m preparing this column but more than likely it will be chilly when you read it, so light up the oven and let’s get started. Now is the time to invite friends over for a home cooked meal. The following will amply feed eight hungry folks with prime rib left over for sandwiches or lunch.

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 (4 pound) packages rock salt ½ cup water Spicy horseradish sauce – recipe follows Rub roast on all sides with garlic, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Place salt to a depth of ½ inch in a disposable roasting pan; place roast in center of pan. Pat remaining salt onto roast; sprinkle with ½ cup water. This show was an example of the power and influence that can happen when either through luck or insightful selection, the actors chosen play their parts on stage with such red hot perfection that the whole play becomes a mystical journey into that unforgettable something which the great critic Walter Kerr called “theatrical incandescence” - when IT happens, people leave the theater so moved, so burned by the fire of fine art, that they will bear the scared scar forever. And that’s what makes for great theater. And that’s what those of us lucky enough to witness this production discovered. A burning beauty in the words and ideas of the playwright and the “pretend with perfection” skills and phosphorescent chemistry of just the right actors at the right moments, at least one of which had never been on stage before. And who were the actors who left such a splendid shining theatrical memory of their work in our hearts and minds? Cammie West-Patterson as Margaret Avery/Queen Marie/Princess Enid/ and

Natalie Kippelbaum; Carlos Gonzales as Pfeiffer/Otto/Footman/Princess Ursula the Unusual/ Rev. Howesberry and Sergeant; the beautiful 18 years old Chris Weaver in his debut on stage as Henry Lee Stafford/ Helmut/Opera Singer; Keith Launey as James Avery; Liz Mills as Sally Mortimer/ Princess Patricia/Princess Sophie/Marie Antoinette/Annie Avery and Shannon Williams as Mad King Ludwig. Glenn Meche directed with all the gods at his side. Kevin Champagne did choreography, Timm Holt lighting, and Donald James, assisted by Regina Adams did the beautiful costumes. It is this kind of ineffable theatrical experience which defines the worth and the necessity of live theater. It is a magical production in every sense of theater artistry such as this one that brings the true glory and necessity of the arts and the catharsis of theater into the realms of the spiritual. And that what the IT is all about. To Do Productions and the cast and tech crew of this show really did let IT all hang out with emotionally pyrotechnical repercussions. Your show was a little miracle on Marigny Street.

registers 145 degrees (medium rare) or to desired doneness. Let stand 10 minutes. Crack salt with a hammer; remove roast, and brush away salt. Remove to serving platter. Let stand 20 minutes. Serve roast with spicy sauce. Spicy Horseradish Sauce: 2/3 cup sour cream 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon dry mustard ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground red pepper Whisk all ingredients together until well blended. Cover and chill one hour.

SPINACH PIE This is a creamy quiche like pie without any crust. 2 (6 ounce) packages fresh baby spinach ¼ cup butter 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoons ground black pepper ¼ teaspoon garlic powder 4 large eggs, lightly beaten ¾ cup whipping cream ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese Rinse spinach and drain well. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add spinach and cook until just wilted. In a large bowl sift together flour, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Add spinach, eggs, whipping cream and parmesan cheese, stirring well until all is blended. Pour into a lightly greased 9” pie plate. Bake at 350 degrees for twenty-five minutes or until pie is set. Cut into wedges. Yield: eight servings

LEMON BAKED CAULIFLOWER 1/3 cup chopped shallots ¼ cup butter or margarine, softened ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 large cauliflower, cored Stir the first eight ingredients together until well blended. Place cauliflower on a large sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foul; spread butter mixture over cauliflower. Bring sides of foil to the top and seal. Place on a baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for and hour or until tender. Yield: six to eight servings.

AUNTIE DEE’S BOURBON BALLS 1 (16 ounce) package powered sugar 1/3 cup bourbon ¼ cup butter, softened Stir together in a bowl until well blended. Cover and chill eight hours. Shape mixture into one inch balls. Chill eight hours. To finish roll each ball in powered sugar or finely chopped pecans or dip into chocolate to cover and place on waxed paper. Chill one hour or until hardened.

MOCHA FUDGE CAKE A ribbon of coconut and cream cheese runs through this Bundt cake. 2 ½ cups sugar, divided 1 cup vegetable oil 3 large eggs 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons baking powder 2 tablespoons baking soda 1 ½ teaspoons salt ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa 1 cup strong coffee, cooled 1 cup buttermilk 2 tablespoons vanilla extract, divided 1 (8 ounce) cream cheese, softened ½ cup sweetened coconut flakes ½ cup semisweet chocolate morsels Chocolate glaze – recipe follows Combine 2 cups sugar, oil and two eggs in a large mixing bowl; beat at high speed with an electric mixer one minute. Combine flour and next four ingredients; combine coffee and buttermilk. Add dry ingredients and coffee mixture to batter. Beat at medium speed for three minutes. Stir in one teaspoon vanilla. Pour 2/3 mixture into a greased 12 cup Bundt pan. Beat cream cheese in a small bowl at medium speed until fluffy; add remaining sugar and 1 egg. Beat just until blended. Stir in remaining vanilla, coconut flakes and chocolate morsels; spoon over batter in the pan, leaving a one inch border around center and

ut of all the books I’ve received for review recently, the one that really stands out is The New Kid by Eliot Schrefer. This is his second novel, and it is both a coming out story and a psychological tale of exploitation and betrayal. The story centers on two siblings and their individual searches for acceptance. The kid in this story is fifteen-year-old Humphrey who has moved to Florida with his parents. They share a motel room, but Humphrey is an unsupervised kid who is

just waiting for school to start in the fall. He has a part-time job and takes a couple of summer school courses. However, he has no luck meeting other like-minded kids for bonding. Then Wade enters the scene. He is a troublemaking athlete from a messed up home, and Humphrey is immediately drawn to him. They are totally different, but his mistake is befriending Wade’s mother. As things unravel, a drunken Wade makes sexual advances toward Humphrey and passes on what happens between them to the mother’s boyfriend. The result is a severe beating. The other sibling, Gretchen, is six years older than Humphrey. She is the result of her mother’s encounter with a show business contact, and when Gretchen begins to have success as an actress, the bitterness between them really sets in. This actually keeps Humphrey from really becoming close to his sister. When Gretchen’s boyfriend Rajan leaves her, she accepts an invitation made before the breakup from his parents to go with them to Italy. When the parents hear about Humphrey’s brutal beating, they insist that he join them on the Roman holiday. It’s only later that Gretchen realizes that the boyfriend’s parents are not really a perfect couple, and she realizes that the father may be a sexual predator. The

interest isn’t about her but her brother. What then happens places Humphrey in a risky situation that could have deadly consequences. Schrefer has really come up with a great story here, and he manages to hold your interest from beginning to end. The book is hardcover, priced at $25, and published by Simon & Schuster.

he Sweet Potato Queens’ First Big-Ass Novel by Jill Conner Browne is clever, and it should bring a few smiles to you along the way. The action takes the reader back to high school in Jackson, Mississippi in 1968. It’s a story about the socially challenged - and Jill with her ragtag group of outcasts. There certainly aren’t any southern belles here. The Sweet Potato Queens were born out of an incident involving one new girl in town who wanted to be a part of the Key Club. She was a popular girl, but she was warned that the Key Club members would tear her apart if they found out her mother was a maid. It was discovered. She was humiliated, and Jill and her group take revenge by turning a pep rally into a Key Club massacre. After high school, the girls go their separate ways, but they manage to maintain a friendship that seems to be permanent. They realize that men come and go, but friendships last forever. The things they do are hilarious, but that is what an entertaining book like this is meant to do. Once you meet these characters, you realize that you are in the presence of strong-willed women who don’t realize that their high school days

will lead to such friendships. This book is also hardcover and is priced at $22.95. It too is published by Simon & Schuster.

f you missed the hardcover version of James McGreevey’s The Confession, you will have a second chance to obtain this autobiographical book. When I first heard he was planning a book, I wondered why since his life had already been aired on every newscast around the globe. It was difficult to understand why anyone would be interested in it. The difference is that you get to see McGreevey differently as he tells the full story of his political rise and fall. It is a book that blends intrigue, revelation, and unmatched insight into what it means to be an American citizen trying to negotiate the minefields of American politics today. Through his Catholic childhood and through his lifetime, he struggled with his sexuality which finally came to a head when his former lover threatened to expose him. McGreevey surprised everyone, and he does it again in this book. This is a very candid look at his public and private life, and he comes across much better than he did in all the news commentaries. It’s a book that will, and does, appeal to a wide range of individuals. Published by Harper, this soft-cover edition is priced at

he final book for review is a hoot. As is stated on the back cover, when you live in a trailer park, every day is a good day to drink. With that said, you can sit back and enjoy Donna Sue’s Down Home Trailer Park Bartending Guide by Donna Sue Boxcar, with an introduction by Ruby Ann Boxcar. This one just ain’t about cocktail recipes and drinkin’ but it gets pretty close. You can certainly get an education in some very lively concoctions. Everything seems to be covered in Boxcar’s book. Donna Sue tells you all about the employees at the Blue Whale Strip Club where she works, and she shares all the items on the bar’s food menu. She adds personal stories too which even some of the more religious brethrens could smile about. There are more than 400 recipes included, like Hop, Skip, and Go Naked to Attitude Adjustment. However, one of the highlight is her descriptions of the differences between the kinds of bars - Baptist (small enough to hide in a closet), Episcopalian (fully stocked, loaded, and ready for any planned or unplanned event, Northern (lots of cheese), and Southern (lots and lots of Jell-O), etc. And there are others, like the difference in a Democratic and a Republican bar, but then you have to appreciate Donna Sue’s bar the most. This is a soft-cover, Citadel Press Kensington release at $12.95, and fully illustrated. I have to go. I’m in the middle of a Frozen Hop, Skip, and Go Naked creation. I think I’ll try a Bump and Grind later. Wow!

Fred Holmes June 27, 1953-December 23, 2007

red Holmes, a resident of New Orleans, passed away after a two month battle with lung cancer. He and partner, Barry Marino, celebrated their 10th anniversary last summer. Originally from Massachusetts, Fred moved to New Orleans in 1991, resided for one year in New Jersey after Katrina, and returned to New Orleans in December 2006. Many will remember Fred and his many kindnesses including he and Barry's Gold Sponsorship of last year's Gay Easter Parade benefiting Food For Friends. He was a bartender at Mother Bob's, Footloose and Voodoo. Fred donated his body to science in the hopes of saving someone else from lung cancer. A private memorial will be held in the future.

Remembering Gumbo

t’s nice to be able to look back and see so many happy people enjoying themselves and acting in a responsible manner. Even though the year passed quickly, it really had it’s great moments, and I’d like to recall a few of those. Perhaps the best one would be the tribute to a dog named Gumbo, Spanish Town’s favorite pooch. Wherever you went, you could always see Gumbo hanging out at Capitol Grocery. His owner lived nearby, but I think the real love of his life was a nice and wonderful chef named Barry. It was quite some time before I realized that Gumbo belonged to someone else. When Gumbo passed away, the people in the Spanish Town community had a parade in his honor. It was something else to see all these nice individuals paying tribute to an animal that had meant so much to everyone, and the news of this reached the local newspaper editors and a nice article about the event was published. Gumbo will always be remembered. His picture was in the front window of Capitol Grocery for a while, but now it hangs on the wall behind the counter. After his death, gifts were brought to the front door and a little memorial came into being. Everyone who came by saw that there was love here that reached far beyond the

everyday activities and relationships. It was a different love, one that truly showed the respect that everyone had for this wonderful dog. Gumbo will always be in our hearts. He was a part of us, and he lives on in our memories.

Outstanding Choices

o year can go by without recalling all the good guys and happy little girls along the way. That’s why I thought I would compile a list of the most popular members in our elite school of Red Stick Gaydom, and you don’t have to be gay or lesbian to make the list. Straights were included in consideration. Perhaps you will agree with them. Perhaps you won’t. At any rate, there are lots of runner-ups, but the vote is in, and here they are: MOST BEAUTIFUL COUPLE - Ty and Stephen at Splash (Here is a couple that sets an example of what a loving relationship is all about. They are not only gorgeous guys, their beauty spills over to everyone around them. They are simply two of the best human beings you will find in historic old Red Stick. I am so pleased to know that they are friends of mine. I really know Stephen better than Ty, but like peanut butter and jelly, they just stick to-

appy belated Christmas and New Year's Acadiana. And now that it’s officially 2008, it’s time to start planning for Mardi Gras. Yeah, don’t think the party’s going to slow for even a minute. Mardi Gras day is only a month away which means it is officially Carnival Season, the wildest time of year in South Louisiana. So brush off those tuxedos if you haven’t already done so and get ready to let loose because the countdown is on. As the days tick away to the beginning of Lent, the Sound Factory and its Back Side will continuously plan more of the exciting celebrations that you’ve come to expect. I imagine that by time Ash Wednesday hits, everybody will be ready for a much needed rest. And in between the special events, don’t forget about Sound Factory and Back Side’s incredible weekly lineup. They are open seven days a week and always have something going on. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. His charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. So

if you haven’t been out lately on a Tuesday night or you think Karaoke Night is just the same old thing, you definitely need to come by. Whether you enjoy being on stage or simply watching those that do, you’re sure to have an awesome night; Chad will make sure of that. And the rest of the week at Sound Factory and Back Side is just as entertaining. Between karaoke on Tuesday nights and Show Night on Sundays, they pack each night with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are fabulous drink specials and the unforgettable dance music spun by DJ Huggies. And unlike many other dance clubs, Sound Factory has a quieter more relaxed side, it's Back Side, where you can take a break from the loud music and socialize with your friends, or make some new ones. And when the conversations wear thin, all you have to do is walk around the corner to dance the night away. What more could anybody ask for? MOST LOVABLE GUY - Lance at Splash (How can you not love someone with such a great personality, plenty of time to give you a hug and a warm greeting, and one who can charm you out of your pants! Well, don’t take the pants off too seriously. Lance has more on his mind, and this shows in his desire to better himself in the field of graphic arts. I have watched this young man go from a bartender to a seasoned student of the fine arts, and he is just one of the finest human beings you will ever have the chance to meet. You can’t help but love him for the wonderful person he is, and my wishes go out to him as I extend my hopes and sincere wishes for a successful career in his future.) MOST HANDSOME BARTENDER Luther at George’s (I have known this young man for a number of years having met him through a business encounter, the telephone kind. I guess the first time I was ever in a group gathering was at one of Trace’s wonderful parties. Luther is just one of those kind-hearted, sweet, and lovable guys that you want to grab onto and never let go. He has one of the most magnificent smiles of anyone I know, and you have to agree that when that smile appears, you know you are in the presence of a master of goodness. He glows with a youthful exuberance that is immediately felt by everyone, and he makes you want to return again and again to be in his

With so many parties during this time of year, it’s more important than ever to drink responsibly. Always designate a driver. Whether she is on the job or out having fun with friends, she is there for and with you. She is one of the most thoughtful individuals I know. I think this really shows when thinking back on that wreck across the street, and Joy goes running from the bar to sit on the sidewalk and console the victim until help arrived. She has a tenderness about her that you don’t see in many people. Sometimes she hides it behind a very outgoing and happy outlook on life, but beneath it all, she is a rare gem of humanity. She truly is a joy to the world.) MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED - Phil and John Wayne (I doubt that I would have even thought about saying this a year ago. I’ve watch the Sulphur flash suffer through one heartache after another, and all the time, someone was right there waiting to step up to the plate and give my friend what he truly needed - love and companionship, a great combination. Whenever I see them together, I see a togetherness here that is permanent. It’s not a guy thing, a brief flirtation, a one-night stand. It’s is something far beyond the everyday searching for an elusive partner. What I see here is the beginnings of that firm foundation for love that will last. It will last because there is a trust and support here that was never there before. I think the combination is outstanding - and to be admired by others.) MOST CHARMING GUY - Jason (Whether he is delivering a bang-up presentation as Belinda Botox or greeting you with a hug and friendly conversation, you won’t find another guy to match the sweetness and sincerity that Jason manages to present. It was several years ago that I first met this kind and very nice young man, and over the years he has grown into a mature man with a clear head on his shoulders. He still has that element of fun that is elusive to some, but he manages to combine this with his everyday activities, and the result is charm beyond all [continued on Expose-5]

Jason is the best.) MOST BUSINESS SMARTS Chansley (I think Chansley has proven herself in the way she has worked and kept up the great business expertise you see at George’s. At first, I only thought of George’s as Richard’s baby, but I see so many strong improvements that have been made over the years, and I have to attribute this to Chansley. After the chores have been done, she still finds time to mingle and make customers feel comfortable, so you have to credit her with a fine public relations job here. Overall, she knows what she is doing, and she is doing it in an honorable way.) MOST ENERGETIC COUPLE - Brandon and Robert (I probably couldn’t say this a year ago, but time has a way of bringing different people into you life, and I’m fortunate to have this dynamic couple to have waltzed into mine. When you see activity from both of them from sunup to sundown, you know that they are sharing their work ethic to make for a better life, improved living conditions, and a desire to please others around them. Their work is one thing, but their desire to complete projects is first rate. There is a different desire here than you see in many people. They don’t sit back and wait for things to come to them. They take things head on and tackle them until completion. Being busy from daylight to dark doesn’t keep them from sharing their energy with oth-

ers. It’s one of those traits that seem to rub off on you. Whatever it is they possess, it seems to be catching, and that’s a good thing.) MOST CARING GUY - Gerry (This was an easy choice here. I’ve never known anyone to match Gerry’s loyalty to family and friends. Without getting into his family crisis, it is just good to know that there is someone out there who cares enough to give the very best to his family and others. Most people will never realize this, but I know, and I can assure you that there is no other choice in this category that is more deserving than my wonderful friend Gerry.) MOST EXCITING COUPLE - Kenny and Garland of Lafayette (Whether it is out with the guys or helping out with Mardi Gras projects or charitable events, Kenny and Garland stand tall about others. They too could be considered energetic, but their energy is of a different type. They have been a couple for a number of years, and they seem to have been made for each other. They work together, share their common interests, and acknowledge friends with their kind and wonderful deeds. Hard working is a way to describe them. Achieving good results is their mark on society. They are truly what you have to consider as a dynamic couple, and they are loved by all.) MOST FRIENDLY GUY - Barry at Capitol Grocery (Once you meet Barry, you will see what I mean by being the most friendly guy. Whether you are right there standing with him or walking across the street, there is always a friendly hello coming your way. It’s almost as if he goes out of his way to greet you. The other morning, it was so cold that I had my head com-

pletely covered and wore a lot of clothing too. I heard him before I saw him. “Is that you under all that?” Yes, it was me, and he wasn’t about to let me get by without speaking to me. I like that in a person, and so many guys just don’t get it. They think their good looks are their ticket to success, but Barry can teach them a lesson or two. He is one of those guys where the beauty is within, and you know it when you meet him. There is no other like him.) MOST EASY GOING - Josie (Spanish Town wouldn’t be the same without Josie. We all celebrated when she bought a home and moved into the neighborhood. She is one of those women who you know is goodness through and through. You can tell it in her voice. You can see it in her face. You can feel it in her presence. She stands out because of this great combination of traits. Regardless of where you meet her, you know you are with someone who cares for you as one human being to another. It is a trait that some people show more than others, but it seems to come easy for Josie. You see her. You meet her. You know exactly what I’m saying is true. I think she is a wonderful human being.) MOST SURPRISING CHARMER Dan at Splash (I think Dan underestimates himself when it comes to the effect he has on others. I find his quiet charm to be alarming at times - but always most welcomed. You may not realize this until you talk with him for a while, but then you find yourself completely enthralled with his outgoing yet sometimes shy approach at conversation. I find his honesty catching, his conversation engaging, his every action a chance to show his way of living

life to the max. I know for a fact that when it comes to his future, he may not show it to most people, but his studies are important to him, and he will pass over a good time to better himself with an education that few others will be able to match. Sometimes, I’d like to just sit down with him and listen to him. I like the way he comes across - a guy who gives you a rather shy demeanor but you know that deep down there is a wealth of intelligence just waiting to break free. I rather like that in a guy.) MOST SINCERE COUPLE - Nick and Eric (Here are two more individuals I have known for a long time. I guess I’ve known Nick the longest, and I have always liked and respected him. I think points in his favor went up when I heard some of the stories he told about Iraq. In fact, I can look at the special gift on my mantle from Iraq that he gave me and think of him each time I walk past it. He and Eric have bought a home in Prairieville, and they seem to be another of those twosomes who just belong to each other. They have managed to go from that downtown North Boulevard apartment to a new home in a short length of time, and you can tell when you see them or hear them talk to each other that there is a love there which can’t be denied. Love is something that many never find, but for this couple, it seems to have found them, and I’m pleased to be included among their many friends.) MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED - Rod Earles (Here is a story of accomplishment after years of hard work and constant study on a part-time basis. Rod is a former [continued on Expose-18]
