25th Annual French Quarter Festival - Call for Musicians
M
usicians interested in performing at the 25th annual French Quarter Festival in New Orleans, to be held April 11-13, may access an application on-line at www.fqfi.org. The deadline for applying is January 18. The free festival, which showcases the culture and heritage of New Orleans, features local musicians performing a variety of musical genres including traditional and progressive jazz, classical, contemporary, R&B, funk, Latin, Cajun/Zydeco, Gospel and other music indigenous to the New Orleans area. Members of the local Musicians Union may perform under the Music Performance Fund. Sponsorship is welcomed for non-union musicians. Volunteers are also needed for various aspects of festival operations, including stage management. The 25th anniversary of French Quarter Festival (FQF25) is being produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc., the 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, which also produces Satchmo SummerFest in August and Christmas New Orleans Style in December. Krewe du Vieux Rolls Saturday, Jan. 19
T
he Krewe du Vieux's 21st parade rolls through the Faubourg Marigny and French Quarter on a somewhat new route Saturday, January 19 at 6:30pm. King Ronald Lewis will reign over the Magical Misery Tour. The Krewe du Vieux’s seventeen subkrewes will each present their own magical, miserable, misguided, mysterious, maniacal, magnificent, and entirely imaginary interpretations of the theme. Subkrewes include the Krewe of C.R.U.D.E., Krewe of Space Age Love, Krewe of Underwear, Seeds of Decline, Krewe of Mama Roux, Krewe of L.E.W.D., Krewe of Drips and Discharges, Krewe of K.A.O.S., Knights of Mondu, T.O.K.I.N., Krewe Rue Bourbon, Krewe de C.R.A.P.S., Krewe of PAN, Mystic Krewe of Spermes, Krewe of Comatose, Mystic Krewe of Inane, and Krewe du Mishigas. Also marching will be many of the city’s top brass bands. The Krewe du Vieux is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the historical and traditional concept of a Mardi Gras parade as a venue for individual creative expression and satirical comment. It is unique among all Mardi Gras parades because it alone carries on the old Carnival traditions, by using decorated, hand or mule-drawn floats with satirical themes, accompanied by costumed revelers dancing to the sounds of jazzy street musicians. King Barkus XVI is Yeller, a family member of Wood Enterprises' own Ken Grandpre, who will reign over Indiana Bones and the Raiders of the Lost Bark.

The 2008 Parade starts at Armstrong Park promptly at 2pm and proceeds on its traditional 15-block route through the Vieux Carré, stopping at the VIP Reviewing Stand at Good Friends Bar, corner Dauphine and St. Ann, where VIPs (and those who desire to be VIPs) will toast the Royal Court. The Pawty (before, during & after parade) at Armstrong Park is open to all at no charge to hear the music and see the sights! Edibles and potables available. Armstrong Park opens to all at 10:30am and is the staging area for the parade participants. Membership in the parade krewe is open to all dogs - regardless of their past. Pre-registration (membership dues & parade pass) is $40 until Jan. 23. Day-ofparade registration (Jan. 27) at Armstrong Park is $50. Registration includes one dog and one human escort. Additional human escort passes can be purchased for $8 each on-line or the day of the parade at Armstrong Park. Only dogs who are registered krewe members with parade tags will be allowed to be part of the parade. If you are not parading this year, but still wish to support the doggone good cause, you can become a krewe member for $20. Krewe members receive all mailings of the Krewe for one year. During The Inferno 2, the girls gave their shirts out to the other cast members. “Everybody started wearing them like crazy. We’d wake up in the morning and go to breakfast, and notice the entire cast was wearing one of our shirts.” From this, College Dropout was formed. Since then, the MTV alums have kept busy promoting their t-shirt line at Gay and Lesbian events across the country. Rachel and Veronica have previously made appearances at Long Beach Pride in California, Chicago Market Days, Surge Nightclub in NYC, as well as at the Dinah Shore Weekend in Miami. he Krewe of Queenateenas kicked off Gay Carnival Season with the 15th anniversary King Cake Queen of Gay Mardi Gras Coronation on Jan. 4. King Cake Queen (KCQ) XII Savanna DeLorean and KCQ XIV Princesse Stephaney join new King Cake Queen XV Marsha Naquin-Delain in her Victorian parlour along with KCQ VII Stephanie Williams of Las Vegas and KCQ VIII Phyllis Denmark of Largo, Florida. The celebration brought almost 300 guests through the receiving line in the first floor Ambush offices of the 828 Bourbon Street mansion. Here, guests could sample the Voodoo-Fleur de Lis Duck & Sausage Gumbo and the She Devil-Freedom Cream Cheese Pyramid de Italia (Italian cheese, meats and olive salad). Wine and beer were also available on the first floor. From there guests went up into the private residence of the Naquin-Delain’s to Belle Lain Magnolia Bar for cocktails, the Victorian parlour, the formal dining room, and out onto their world famous Bourbon Street balcony. The Captain’s Table was served in the dining room with each dish named in honor of the King Cake Queens. Wild game was courtesy of the Chaisson Family from Patterson, Louisiana. Renowed photographer Larry Graham unveiled the “official” portrait of King Cake Queen XV Marsha during the receiving line. His work, as always, was sensational. Couturier to the Queen, Opal Masters, under the label Mr. Mike, created a royal spectacle with the burgundy coronation gown overlaid in exquisite lace highlighted in gold and the colors of a peacock. The lace also covered the royal collar which boasted 4 yards of beaded fringe. To complete the ensemble, 12 gross of burgundy rhinestones and 12 gross of crystal rhinestones embellished the gown and collar. Hair stylist and makeup artist Savanna DeLorean (King Cake Queen XII) created the high fashion coif and soft facial features bringing elegance to the Queen. Queenateenas’ Captain Rip Naquin-Delain had dangling pierced crystal rhinestone earrings with the letters KCQ made for the Queen. The Queen had crystal rhinestone pins with the letters KCQ and a dangling fleur de lis made and presented them to each King Cake Queen during the King Cake Queen gift exchange. The Queen used her pin as a pendant for the evening. Varla Jean Merman Loves a Foreign Tongue at Le Chat Noir
A
t a Twelfth Night party I recently attended I felt a slight pain around my mouth. No, it wasn’t from opening my orifice too wide to stuff king cake into it. Rather, I had been laughing and smiling and grinning so hard watching Varla Jean Merman’s newest show at Le Chat Noir that my face literally hurt...but in the best way possible! Varla Jean Merman Loves a Foreign Tongue takes us on a round-the-world journey with promises that you “don’t have to get on a plane to be exposed to different languages, cultures and tuberculosis.” Varla, who first appeared wearing a red and black ruffled, sequined outfit singing a medley of La Isla Bonita and Besame Mucho, is a willing, if not always the brightest, tour guide. So what if she gets confused between Austria and Australia? Or tells you that Hawaii is “off Korea”? Or avers that Holland is in the nether regions? She can still say “This sore is not contagious” in 27 different languages and demonstrates at least a half dozen of them. Jeff Roberson’s brilliant creation continues to amaze. In an age when most Americans can barely find Europe on a map—only 11% even have passports s/he informs us—Varla refuses to play to the lowest common denominator. So not only do we get bitchily witty references to Oprah and Larry Craig and Heather Mills, but Roberson even invokes Roman gods and goddesses. Okay, so they’re Testikles and Klymidia, but still... Seriously, how many comic chanteueses can viably pull off operatic versions of Con Te Partiro and I Got You, Babe with a little bit of Pagliacci thrown in? Varla can and, with Cedric Bridges playing Placido Domingo to her Joan Sutherland, does, mixing high and low art to delicious effect. In keeping with the international theme, VJM takes us to gay Paree for a tribute to Josephine Baker with Le Freak. Though I find it difficult to describe what it looks like when

she unzips one of the bananas from Baker’s iconic skirt, mention was made of a German shepherd. Of course, never having owned a dog, I had no idea what she was referring to. As always, videos reveal yet more of Varla’s talents, as well as allowing for backstage costume changes. If one in which she seems to take on Al-Qaeda to the tune of Something’s Coming Over Me ends with a luscious twist, she then tops herself (what an image that is!) when she sends up international adoptions with Beyonce’s Irreplaceable and gets in a dig at Bianca del Rio as well. Absolutely nothing is sacred to La Merm. If Varla recycles her Teutonic Private Dancer from I’m Not Paying For This!, I had no complaints. Not only did it add a bit of Deutschland to the mix but I’ll gladly see anything that fabulous twice. Likewise, every time she accompanies herself on ukelele to sing “You can take the girl out of New Orleans/But you can’t take the New Orleans out of the girl” she humanizes her outrageous self to touching effect, not unlike Hillary getting choked up in New Hampshire. For now, while sex is never far from Varla’s mind, she seems to have put the personal demons away that she explored in Under A Big Top and Girl with a Pearl Necklace ( intimacy, love, clowns, etc.) and replaced them with a righteous anger aimed at our soon-to-be gone President. With that in mind, her tribute to our Northern neighbor ended Foreign Tongue with a coup d’theatre that made even me appreciate Canada. Now that’s talent!

There was comedy, there was tragedy...and not all of it was at City Hall. Rather, the theatrical community— actors, writers, directors, designers, technicians—came together to give the Crescent City and its environs a theatrical buffet worthy of a city that was not still enduring the aftereffects of the most dramatic show Mother Nature, with various governmental agencies in featured roles, had ever produced. In recognition of the extraordinary work done in the past twelve months, we are thrilled to announce the nominees for the Fifth Annual Ambie Awards. can not believe it. Mardi Gras 2008 is already upon us and I still have my Christmas lights and decorations hanging in my windows. Martha Stewart would just cringe and take away my medal of conduct. But alas I am truly amiss in this situation. I for one personally attended the official beginning of the Gay Mardi Gras on Friday, January 4th. It was of course the coronation of the Queenateenas' King Cake Queen XV Marsha Naquin – Delain, a more deserving queen there could never be. Marsha was radiant in her royal attire and just blew all the attendees away. Congratulations Marsha. Now today’s column is not going to be one of those and how to prepare for the masses of house guests that may be heading your way this festive season, as I write every Decadence and Mardi Gras, but rather a menu for a cozy sit down dinner for from four to six people, that even during this rushed season can be satisfying and make for many fond future memories.

½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper French baguette slices Prepare Garden Pesto. With food processor running, drop garlic cloves through food chute; process until minced. Add goat cheese and next three ingredients; processing until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides. Line a three cup bowl with plastic wrap, allowing three inches to hang over sides. Spread ½ cheese mixture into bowl; top with pesto. Top with remaining cheese mixture. Cover and chill eight hours. Invert chilled Torta onto a serving platter; remove plastic wrap. Serve with Baguette slices. Garden Pesto: ¼ cup chopped pecans ¼ cup pine nuts 2 garlic cloves 2 ½ cups firmly packed basil leaves ¾ cup loosely packed fresh parsley leaves ¾ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese ½ cup olive oil Bake pecans and pine nuts in a shallow pan at 350 degrees for eight minutes. Let cool completely. With food processor running, drop garlic through food chute; process til minced. Add basil and parsley; process until minced. Add nuts and cheese. STRAWBERRY SALAD WITH CINNAMON VINAIGRETTE 1 (11 ounce) can mandarin oranges, drained 1 pint fresh strawberries, stemmed and halved 1 small red onion, thinly sliced ½ cup coarsely chopped pecans, toasted 1 avocado, cut into chunks 1 (10 ounce) package romaine lettuce Cinnamon Vinaigrette (recipe follows) Combine first six ingredients in a large bowl. Drizzle with half of Cinnamon Vinaigrette tossing to coat. Serve remaining vinaigrette with salad. Yield: six servings. Cinnamon Vinaigrette: 1/3 cup olive oil 1/3 cup raspberry vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground pepper ½ teaspoon hot sauce Combine all ingredients in a jay; cover tightly, and shake vigorously. Chill at least two hours. Shake well before serving.

1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper 1 (14 ounce) can chicken broth 2 pounds cooked, ready to eat crawfish tail meat ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley ¼ cup chopped fresh chives 6 cups cooked rice Melt butter in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion and next four ingredients; sauté five minutes or until tender. Add flour salt and cayenne; cook stirring constantly, until caramel-colored (about twelve minutes). Add broth; cook from three to five minutes until thick and bubbly. Stir in crawfish meat; cook five minutes or until thoroughly heated. Stir in herbs. Serve over hot cooked rice. Yield: six servings
SWEET POTATO SALAD 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes Vegetable cooking spray 1 teaspoon salt, divided 3 ribs celery, diced 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped ¾ cup diced onion ½ cups diced bell pepper 4 tablespoons brown sugar 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 6 tablespoons white vinegar 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon hot sauce 1 teaspoon prepared mustard 3 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled Arrange sweet potatoes in an even layer on a baking sheet. Coat with cooking spray; sprinkle with ½ teaspoon salt. Bake at 400 degrees for twenty-five minutes or just until tender. Allow to cool slightly. Stir together remaining ½ teaspoon salt, celery, and the next nine ingredients in a large bowl until blended. Add potatoes and toss gently. Sprinkle with crumbled bacon. Serve warm or chilled. Yield: six servings.
PRALINES 1 ½ cups granulated sugar 1 ½ cups firmly packed light brown sugar 1 cup evaporated milk ¼ cup butter 2 cups pecan halves, toasted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Bring sugars and milk to a boil in a 4quart saucepan, stirring often, for eleven minutes or until candy thermometer registers 232 degrees (thread stage). Stir in butter and pecans, and cook, stirring constantly, until candy thermometer registers 232 degrees. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Beat with a wooden spoon for two minutes or just until mixture begins to thicken and lose it’s gloss. Quickly drop by heaping tablespoonfuls onto buttered wax paper; let stand until firm. Yield 2 ½ dozen candies.
MAPLE COFFEE 2 cups half and half 1 cup maple syrup 3 cups strong brewed coffee, hot Cook half and half and maple syrup in a saucepan over medium heat for five minutes or until thoroughly heated. I
’ve been spending a lot of time lately watching CNN and MSNBC in the hope of learning more about the Presidential Candidates. It looks likely that the Democrats will have an edge this coming Fall but who the candidate will be is still not clear. I am a fan of Hillary Clinton. For all the hoopla about change, she is the only candidate that has effected change during her long career. I also believe that she is the brightest of the bunch and will ably keep up with government demands be they at home or abroad. A year or two before Katrina, Nicholas Romans and I were having lunch at ByWater Bar.B.Que. We were talking politics as we often did and Nicholas was adamant that Hillary would make an outstanding president. I was just getting on the Hillary bandwagon and not totally confident at the time. Since then, I’ve done a lot of reading about her record as an elected official, as the wife of the Governor of Arkansas and as the wife of the President of the USA. She really is outstanding. I can see why older Caucasian males might be intimidated by her but I am at a loss to see why younger men and women aren’t standing by her. The college set seems to have chosen Obama as their candidate, and I find that odd. Obama has a good but all to short political record. I truly hope that we do not find ourselves voting race rather than qualifications. Still the college set seems to be mostly Caucasian. It is usual for college students to stick with the candidate acting the most

sophisticated and upper class whether they are or not. Obama seems to be playing that role and the less experienced voters seem to be foolishly impressed. Obama’s lack of experience could cost the Democrats dearly in November. I would love to see a ticket of Clinton for President and Obama for Vice-President. That would groom Obama for four to eight years before taking the run at President. And what about Edwards? He is a great guy but no Clinton. He might unite the South but that didn’t happen during the last Presidential selection. I admire where he came from and the way he became a self-made millionaire. He is truly impressive but that makes him a great businessman only. He didn’t show much while serving in public office. Running a country is nothing like running a business especially if that country is the strongest on the planet, and other countries are either taking shots at you or depending on you for survival. You can count on me to be glued to the primaries. I’ll try to be as fair as possible while writing on our political future. Please realize that my fairness guide is a little left
of center and firmly in appreciation of Clinton. On the other side of the isle is a truly confusing group. They have a religious radical, a political rebel and the only sane candidate cannot seem to get enough votes and positive attention to keep his spirit above water. Watching the Republicans gives one a mix of fear and comedy. They all seem to dislike the current Republican President. They rag on Bush more than the Democrats. Where is the party unity, I keep asking my Republican friends. If Bush had the support of the citizens, candidates would be falling over themselves trying to be his best friends. It is true that politics makes strange bedfellows. One interesting point is the way the candidates are being showcased by the media. I hate it. If you watch FOX, you get the Republican slant. CNN and MSNBC are more honest in their approach but none of them is doing a truly fair or good job of sharing the news. One day the media has Clinton marked as a bitch, the next a victim. Obama seems to be the golden haired kid and Edwards is shown to be something in between the two. If Hillary cries with a mother talking about her son at a rally, she is weak. That kind of concern and the ability to be so touched by the people shows real strength to me. If she answers a question from a point of strength, she is too unfeminine or harsh. The most sarcastic remarks I’ve heard have come from Obama. The most

tell you what, after spending a lot of time out of town recently, it was really good to get back to New Orleans especially for New Year's Eve. It was one of those times when I remember why I love this city so much. First, I have to commend Dale and Dave, proprietors of Auld Sweet Olive Bed and Breakfast. These guys threw one of their fantastic Bears and Bubbles parties to jump start the celebration on New Year's Eve. It is always great to stop by and see the folks there. The crowd is always friendly and a great mix of visitors and locals. My hats off to you, Dale and Dave, keep up the good work. Oh, and just so you all know, they are already busy planning their Bears, Beads and Bubbles celebration for Lundi Gras. Stop by from 4pm till 7pm and say hi! And for those of you who happen to get on-line every now and then, next time log onto Bear411.com, add the party to your profile under Events, I will Be Attending. Just so we all know who you are when we get there. Just being in the French Quarter for New Year's is an experience I hope never to tire of. The excitement is almost palpable every year. Yes, it helps to have the Sugar Bowl crowds and the tourists from all over. They are not always hard on the eyes either, but it is all just one big celebration that can’t be compared. I know Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence may be bigger crowds, but maybe when you think
of it as a celebration going on around the world one hour at a time, it just seems special. A chance to start new in some way.

o, what do we have to look forward to here in New Orleans? Why, Mardi Gras my friends, what else. And my oh my is it fast approaching. Just a week or so and we will all be doing the Mambo! If the partying in the streets isn’t enough for you, don’t fret, there is plenty going on. There are parades galore, kicked off with the biting humor of Krewe du Vieux on Saturday, January 19th. There has been a slight change in the route for this year, check out their web site, www.kreweduvieux.org , for the exact route. Krewe du Vieux’s theme is The Magical Misery Tour! While this is not one of the big super parades with big tractor drawn floats and all, I bet you’ll get a kick out of the effort all the sub-krewes, their themes and walking floats do. Come on out for one of the most irreverent nights of your life! After Krewe du Vieux, you will be free to enjoy all the rest of the parades and their fantastic celebrations. Not that you wouldn’t be free to do so if you miss it, but hey, this is Mardi Gras in New Orleans, it’s all good!

he Lords of Leather have been some busy folks lately. Ball Captain David and Lieutenant
whining I’ve heard comes from Edwards. Clinton has been straightforward and honest about herself and her opponents. What does a smart, capable woman have to do to get respect? It seems almost as impossible now as it did to me when I was starting out in the 1960’s. No matter how hard you work, there is always a man who is inferior trying to stop you from getting ahead. No amount of education or hard work gets equal treatment. That is the reason I ended up being self-employed. I got sick of being told what I couldn’t do when I was already doing the job in question. Being a female in business and politics is like being Gay in the world at large. We just aren’t God’s favorites, they tell us. Women and queers just cannot live up to the good old boys that are both white and black. So with that in mind, I am encouraging everyone in the GLBT community to take an interest in the Presidential campaign. I think you will see that Clinton is not only very Gay friendly, she is qualified to represent us. Don’t take my word. Research for yourselves. A few hours with CNN might make you question why Obama and Edwards are joining forces against the only true candidate – Clinton. As much as I would like for everyone to love Hillary, I do know that we are all entitled to our opinions. The important thing here is to take part, learn and select the person you think is best for the country. Don’t let someone else make up your mind for you. That is how we totally lose what few rights we have. Michael D. have been putting countless hours into this year's bal masque. With this being the 25th anniversary, these two, and all the Lords, are working on putting on a show like no other. Captain David broke with tradition this year and at the royalty celebration for Lord King and Lord Consort XXIV, announced this year’s ball theme: Super Heroes! While I was not able to attend the Royal Leather Tea for Lord King and Consort XXIV, I hear it went very well with some great food and a lot of great people. Held at JohnPaul’s upstairs, which is a great space by the way, all those who came were not only well fed but well entertained. The Lords of Leather Bal Masque XXV, Super Heroes, will be on Sunday, February 3rd, at 8pm at the Alario Center in Westwego, Louisiana. he New Orleans Bear and Bear Trapper Social Club is busy this year as well. The Bears are still holding their twice monthly beer busts at their home bar, the Phoenix, every First and Third Friday from 9pm til midnight out on the patio. Mark's Story: Part Two
W
hen he awoke an hour or so later, he quietly removed himself from Bruce’s clutches, went to the bathroom and showered as quickly as possible. He dressed just as fast and pocketed his own possessions hoping to steal away with no further conversation, and he almost made it. In fact his hand was on the doorknob when he heard Bruce’s voice from the bed. “Sneaking out so early, Jake?” Jake? Jake, that’s right he had told this dude his name was Jake, last night, Christ was he loaded then. Why did he always use the name Jake when he wanted a meaningless one night stand? He had never figured that one out. His name was Mark, and he always used it except when he was in a whoring mood. Christ he had been using it a lot lately, he was going to have to curb that action for a little while, he was never going to find another lover if he continued to play the wanton slut. “You are going to call me later hot piece?” “You know it sweetheart.” He made his way out the door and whatever Bruce was saying drifted back from the hall and into oblivion. Jake reverted back to Mark, the sincere guy, Mark the man who had lost his true love to his horny counterpart Jake. Mark who would never think about going to cruise the bars for a one night

he Phoenix will be the site of the annual Night of the Black Mask Street Party on Friday, February 1st. The Phoenix and the Lords of Leather will co-host this legendary street party with the traditional Beer Bust and more. Look for the Bears and the LSGRA to be set up as well. Phoenix manager Clint Taylor tells me that Buzz Cut Boy Ernest will make his return on that night as well. So stop by, get a beer or six, get a haircut and have a great time. As always, Ernest will donate all of his donations to NO/AIDS Task Force. Clint also told me that the Bears will be hosting a Lundi Gras Beer Bust from 9pm til midnight on Monday, the 4th of February. Now that is a new event that I am sure will be a big success for all.

Mark who just now walked out of another man’s apartment, whom he had never met until last evening, having given himself over entirely more than once, no this was not Mark, he would never have allowed himself to be so nondiscriminatory, and this was the other side of the coin, the nasty side. Jim walked silently back to his little bed and breakfast, which was just down the beach about two blocks from where he had been sitting and across US 1 and a winding driveway about a block long leading through lush vegetation stopping just short of the veranda of his Victorian. He paused briefly to inhale the intoxicating aroma of fresh sea breeze mingled with the sweetness of honeysuckle, roses and a hint of the fresh herbs, which he was growing along the outer edges of the veranda. Carlos was watering the plants, clad in the skimpiest of thongs, Carlos was one of the three young men he had hired on to attend to the B and B and it’s guests. All three were of American-Cuban decent. All three were built like the proverbial outhouse, one handsomer than the other, all super personable, gay and available. Carlos’ face broke into a big smile as his employer approached the steps. “Out walking earlier than usual this morning.” “Couldn’t sleep much last night.” “You should call me sometime when you feel that way.” He winked in a way that was a bit flirty, just enough not to cross the line. “My child Carlos, you are indeed a classic work of art.” “Sir, with all due respect, I may even be more than meets the eye.” “Carlos, there isn’t much left that does not meet the eye. In fact I guess that there is not an inch left of you that could be hidden anywhere.” “Do I perhaps offend you? I mean I could cover myself more if it would please you or your guests.” “You please me more, as you are than you’ll ever know.” “Really?” He leaned over the top of the ladder fluffing the pathos vines that were hanging almost to the ground, raising his firm rounded buns towards the heavens. And just then it occurred to Jim that Carlos possessed probably the most perfect set of cheeks he had ever seen next to Marks. “Really.” Jim walked past the ladder raising his hand and just barely touching the merchandise. He could feel Carlos tighten the muscles as he did so. “Call me some time; it doesn’t always have to be work.” He started down the ladder as Jim turned to enter the front door. He could feel Carlos’ hand come to rest on his shoulder and it startled him a little bit, Carlos had never actually touched him before, not that he could think of, that was for sure. “Senor?” Carlos questioned Jim. Jim turned to face him and when he did, the young man reached up taking his head in his palms and planted a long kiss on Jim’s lips. “If you fire me, so be it. It was worth it. I could die a happy man this very second.”
“You could die an idiot!” Jim slid into the house and hurried upstairs, a most genuine smile crossed his face, one more so than in the past year and a half since he had come here to the Florida Keys. Jim gone, left Carlos standing there smiling to himself as well, he had wanted to do this very thing for over six months since he had started working here at the guest house, but just never had the nerve, in fact it surprised the crap out of him that he had actually acted on impulse this morning and acted on his fantasy. When his cousin Manuel had told him about working here and the side benefits it held, it seemed like it could be a good way to keep his pockets full of extra spending cash. The jobs weren’t all that hard to begin with, four or five hours a day was all. Clean a couple of rooms, set up some breakfast foods, fresh coffees and teas, then swim in the pool and parade around the grounds during the afternoon for the guests to ogle. Actually this last part was not a requirement; the boys found out fast that it led to quite a few invitations to dinners and nights out on the town, sometimes with a further invite to spend the night. And why not? What was to lose? They were already at work. Manuel spent a lot of time at the B and B, over night stays, not so many for Carlos, though the offer came on a more regular basis. Carlos was more a dreamer than Manny, as the guests favored calling his cousin. Manny jumped on the occasion to make a coin. Carlos wanted more; Carlos wanted to be half owner of the place. He was born for it; he felt it deep in his heart and soul, now if he could just make Jim feel the same way as he did. He would bring the man down on his knees; give him his heart, his soul, his body to do with as he pleased if he could only make him see things his way. Carlos rubbed his hands down his slim body as he descended the stairs and walked around to the side patio with the pool. Poolside, he slowly slide down the thin strip of cloth he wore standing stark naked in the sun. Slowly and suggestively he stretched his body, posing now and then for effect, for he was sure he was being watched by Jim, from the master bedroom. He abruptly dove into the pool, sending shudders up Jim’s back who was indeed in attendance, watching from behind the dark green drapes. He had to admit that Carlos was a fine specimen of man, handsomely constructed with all the parts amply displayed in the proper places. He watched as many of his guests fawned over the man, as well as they did his cousins. But Carlos wasn’t like Manny or even the younger Philippe, who took up all the invitations that were offered, he seemed a little more conservative. Had the truth been known Carlos had stolen just a bit of Jim’s heart almost since the day he showed up to apply for a job. Jim had Manny and Philippe to clean the rooms, keep the cupboards stocked, tend the laundry and most of the other chores, what he needed was a grounds keeper and an additional piece of eye candy. Manny was the one who suggested his cousin. At first Jim was skeptical, I mean really how many cute queers could one family produce was the question that popped into his mind? But listening to the brothers he had agreed to meet their cousin, he was not disappointed! On the day he showed up for the interview he arrived in just about what he came to work
in daily ever since, just about nothing. The young man was bright, intelligent, not to mention easy on the eyes. Mark walked along the bitter streets of Philadelphia, already having forsaken last night’s personality of Jake. Jake was the one that he couldn’t stand, the unfaithful one, the one who had no idea of commitment, of caring, of belonging to another of sharing things together and working on building a future together. There was no future in the lives of the Jakes of this world, only hedonistic satisfaction. The Jakes were the ones who ruined the lives of the Marks of this world. Who took their dreams and tossed them aside on the highways of life to fester and rot along with the other disgorged items of humanity. They laughed at committed relationships, they shunned togetherness and god forbid they came across true love; it all but caused them to implode. Mark, by this time, remembered nothing of his encounter from last night. It just ceased to exist. It never occurred it just had never happened. He felt nothing from or about it, there was no longing, there was no ache. The only ache he carried was the one from having lost his lover for some infraction he could not understand. He just never came to grasp the fact that Jake had been there. He walked along briskly towards his work, shivering as it were, he passed by one of the many gay themed travel agencies in this section of town, the brightly sunlit photograph of guys frolicking on a beach in the Keys stopped him in his tracks. Christ on the Mount, he thought, I have two paid weeks coming. I’ll cash them in and head for some warmth. He set a faster pace and headed on into work. Once at work, Mark called his boss, okayed his off dates, called the travel agency, gave them his travel dates and allowed them full discretion as to making all the arrangements for his holiday. It would be his first vacation since his break up with Jim and he felt this was just what he possibly needed to get his life back in order. Jock laid on the foot of his master’s bed watching him with curiosity standing behind the curtain staring out the window. He had no idea what Jim found so fascinating out beyond the glass pane. Jim slowly unbuttoned the Cargo shorts he was wearing and allowed them to drop to the floor, he stripped off the light blue net shirt he was wearing as well, and stood there just out of sight naked as a jaybird. He watched Carlos lazily swimming in the pool below. How old was Carlos, he wondered to himself? Probably twenty-two, twenty-three, it was almost impossible to tell with these Cuban-American youth now days. They had their Hispanic dark looks with an exotic, almost hypnotic olive skin tone; they all seemed to spring from gangly teens into well muscle toned young men over night. There just didn’t seem to be any in between stage. Jim could feel the desire flowing strongly through his veins now gaining control of his innermost desires. He had just turned thirtytwo, not really to old to start up a relationship with his young employee he thought. Not if by any chance the hints Carlos had been throwing his way this past summer were for real, and after today’s kiss he was sure they were. He stood here now in the shadows watching the young man below, desiring him, wanting him why not just

obituary A Living Icon of Jesus: Rev. Bill Richardson 1909-2007 by: Peter Iveson of Toronto Ontario Canada Holding onto my hand and my grandmother’s cross Dad died peacefully at 10:48 on Wednesday, Oct 3, 2007, Handel’s Messiah was playing on his CD player”, apologized Rev. Bill Richardson’s daughter Anne on Dec.16th 2007. “I thought we had notified you,” she said. Father Richardson, a long time member of New Orleans gay community, was born in 1909 in Lexington, Kentucky. He attended the University of the South in Sewanee Tennessee and General Theological Seminary in New York and was ordained to the Episcopal Church priesthood in 1935 serving in parishes in Rochester, New York and Michigan before coming to St. George’s Episcopal Church, 4600 St. Charles Ave., where he was rector from I953 to 1976. His requiem Eucharist was held Oct. 8, 2007 at St. George’s. You can listen to the homily preached at his funeral if you look up the church’s website. Segregation was enforced when Rev. Richardson arrived at St. George’s in 1953. He got wind of the ushers canning blacks and refusing to let in people who were not dressed properly. He used to patrol in front of the Church every Sunday morning to welcome everyone to worship almighty God. Some racists broke away and formed a break away church. When Metropolitan Community Church met in his chapel at St. George’s in the early seventies the tragic gay night club fire in the French Quarter took place. Some 33 gays were burnt alive .The Roman Catholic archdiocese wouldn’t get involved and the memorial service was held in the United Methodist Church on Rampart Street. Father Richardson allowed MCC to hold their planning meeting at St. George’s providing they promised his church’s name be not publicized. However, when Troy Perry the Pope of MCC arrived at the airport, the press were there. Next morning the Times Picayune covered the meeting, they mentioned St. George’s Church but they didn’t mention its denomination. Soon Bishop Iveson Nolan, no relation of mine; heard. He called Fr. .Bill.” Why did you allow those people to hold their meeting at your church?” the bishop scolded. Father Bill said, “Yes Bishop, I did. They are all God’s children. They all have God’s unconditional love.” That took the wind out of the bishop’s sails. Next a high society lady from Trinity Episcopal called. ”Oh Father Richardson that was the most wonderful Christian thing that you could of done. ”Father Bill told her to call the Bishop and tell him what she said." Episcopal Church then a church for the rich, they had fired their rector. He told them how badly they had treated their pastor and he gave them hell. He was never invited back again. Integrity, the gay caucus in the Episcopal Church was founded by Louie Crew in 1975, very soon afterwards chapters sprung up all over the United States and Canada, soon Integrity New Orleans was formed by Father Bill and others. They were denied meeting space in all Episcopal parishes in New Orleans by the orders of the then Bishop Brown. Over Labor Day weekend in 1982 Integrity Inc. .held its annual convention in New Orleans, I attended. Again we were denied use of an Episcopal church, there was a protest by Integrity on the steps of Christ Church Cathedral which got Bishop Brown into trouble with other bishops who were meeting at General Convention New Orleans 1982 In 1982, my friend the late Rev. Gregory Lee of Toronto, asked me to go travelling with him in his motor home. The destination was Mardi Gras I982 in New Orleans. Father Lee had visions of us parking in an Episcopal parking lot in downtown, Gregory was very stubborn.
Although I had never met Father Bill, I called him about Gregory’s intentions with the fears I had heard about the crime in New Orleans. He said he would take care of things. As Fr. Lee hit all the Episcopal parking lots along the route he called up each Episcopal church in New Orleans. They all responded with “No.” Out of desperation, we went to the Cathedral in New Orleans, they sent us over to Bill’s home where he invited us in, fed us, gave us beds to sleep in, and Gregory got to sleep with Father Bill. This was the beginning of a twenty five year friendship that I had with Bill Richardson, I came down many times over the years to stay with Fr. [continued on Main-31]

Carlos was doing the backstroke and looking up at the window just as Jim stepped into full view, he smiled broadly and waved. Jim waved back and smiled as well. Not taking his eyes off of his boss, he pulled himself out of the pool, staring heavenward. He shook the excessive water off his body and entered the house, bounding up the two staircases to the third floor. It did not take more than thirty seconds for the two men to fall entwined in each others arms onto the bed, causing Jock to jump down so as not to get crushed beneath them. This should have happened months ago they both thought as they reveled in each others bodies. In the office on the first floor, the fax machine was spewing forth a new reservation from Mark. Bill Richardson’s wife Mary died in 1963 and Bill had to bring up his family by himself. After his family had grown up Father Bill had made some gay friends, he still thought of himself as straight. He got the chance to make love with a close friend, he said it was the most wonderful experience. He said he had some homosexual experiences when he was in seminary but they weren’t very successful. Soon he had a lover, Bobby Poirier, a Cajun and he took him to live with him in his shotgun house on Baronne Street around the corner from St. George’s. Bobby was an alcoholic, hated blacks, and kept a gun. Once when I was there Bobby threatened to shoot Bill’s black handyman. I can still hear it now. “Bobby give me that gun. Now Bobby, Bobby" ...eventually Bobby would hand over the gun to Father Bill. A Bible thumper came to the door to quote scripture, Father Bill would invite him in and eventually they would end up in bed. Father Bill always believed that God is a god of love .Rev. Gregory Lee would scold Father Bill for not being circumspect. There was not an ounce of Victorian prudery in Bill. During my visit in September 1987, Bobby had died and Bill was having to decide which suitor he would take to live with. He picked Alex Jacobs, a non religious Jew .They had a wonderful relationship which lasted from 1987 until 1998. They were both widowers and had children and grandchildren, they traveled extensively; were involved with the Prime Timers, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, gay mens groups; nudist gatherings. One year they were the guests of honor in New Orleans Pride Parade.. Father Bill continued to assist in parishes all over the diocese. They moved from Baronne St. to a gated condominium in Metairie for safety, since Father Bill was too trusting of everyone and would answer the door without hesitation. After two close calls with gunmen they moved out. The late Bobby Saucier took Alex’s place in looking after Father Bill who was almost ninety. After I came all the way to Fr. Bill’s ninetieth birthday I had an open invitation each year for Mardi Gras since 1999 which I took advantage of. In 2001 Father Bill hired a gay regis-
tered nurse Robert Bender to look after him, he made Robert his power of attorney in 2002 since he feared his wilful daughter Anne would take control and put him in a nursing home near her in California. Anne accused Robert of manipulating her father. At Mardi Gras 2002 Anne announced that she was coming to visit and she told her father she didn’t want any Mardi Gras guests around, she didn’t use the word queers, So fortunately all eight of us got to stay at Bobby Saucier’s home on Bell Street in Bayou St. John. In October 2003 upon Bobby Saucier’s brothers’ and sisters’ concern, Robert and Father Bill went to check on Bobby, they found him dead in bed. This was a terrible shock for an old man of 94. The family did not want any of Bobby’s gay friends coming to his funeral up in Mississippi ,however Robert, Father Bill, and John Alexander went. At Mardi Gras 2004 a memorial Eucharist for Bobby Saucier was held at St. George’s Episcopal Church as a closure. Father Bill presided and I read and some forty gays came after it was advertised in Ambush. Bobby was only 65. After a stroke in June 2004, Father Richardson began to fail badly with dementia setting in. I found his condition very difficult when I visited that November, and stayed on my own for Mardi Gras 2005 but went to see him. I called him every two months and was very concerned when Katrina struck. The evacuation was very hard on both Robert and Father Bill although they were more fortunate than others. Robert bought a little retirement home in Arizona and took Father Bill there for hurricane season in 2006. I didn’t get to Mardi Gras 2006 but I again stayed on my own in the Marigny for Mardi Gras in 2007 and got to have two nice long visits with Father Bill and got to see him for the last time. Robert told me to come as Father Bill was failing badly and he expected to be relieved of his charge at any time by the family. Apart from room and board Robert was never paid for looking after Father Bill. Robert, a devout Catholic felt he was caring for a living saint. He was given Father Bill’s car, when they bought a new car. Anne was furious. I called just after they had finished Easter dinner 2007. All his family were there, they showered him with family love and affection and seduced him back into the family fold. Next day the family’s lawyer came

With pull from the Bishop, Anne was able to get her dad into Christwood an Episcopal Facility in Covington where he had physiotherapy three times a week, and old parishioners and clergy friends for company. He had three good months there before he died. Father Bill wanted his ashes to be with those of Alex, but Anne insisted they be interred beside his wife Mary in Michigan. There was some talk that they be incorporated in the altar at St. George’s. Apart from mention of the gay night club tragedy in an article on Bill Richardson in the Times Picayune I felt I should tell the important points of Bill’s gay life that were ignored by the family. Robert Bender told me he saw “Father Bill as a living Icon of Jesus.” Father Bill loved Robert, Robert actually extended Father Bill’s life. Rev. Bill Richardson was most certainly a modern saint.

Flatscape 2008 Apollo Ball
T
he Baton Rouge Krewe of Apollo presented their 27th bal masque on Saturday, Jan. 5 in the River Center Arena, and I have to say that this is perhaps one of the best in their entire history of presenting excellent balls. Everything was first class – programs, costumes, lighting, sound, set decorations, etc. It was a great tribute to animals with the theme They All Asked For You. I spoke with Joe Boniol before the tableau started, and he assured me that I would like this ball, and he was right. It was the first time in recent years when the emphasis was on beautiful costumes as opposed to production numbers. This kept the crowd in their seats and watching the ball instead of dancing around like fools in heat. I can’t say enough good things about this effort, and from a theatrical standpoint, it was really one great extravaganza. Larry Fremin led the Color Guard, and Ron Doherty sang the National Anthem, a really nice rendition for this former Apollo queen. Following this was the presentation of Mr. National Apollo, Chad Blanchard, and Miss Apollo, the beautiful and vivacious Nicole Foxx. Masters and Mistress of Ceremonies were Murphy, Sam and Jodi, and they did a fine job except for one obvious error. They called for the Grand March a little too soon, and it interfered with the final walk of the new King and Queen Apollo XXVII. Other than that, I’d have to say that this was a near-perfect bal masque. I don’t know the co-captain personally, but I will say that this was a very successful venture for the talented and artistic Joe Boniol. Boniol and his co-captain, Buffi Monet, started things off with great Pink Flamingos, truly colorful, very beautiful costumes. I have to also say that I thought last year’s royalty came forth with a couple of great Spanish-themed costumes, but they certainly outdid themselves this year. Gorgeous Scott Blanchard, King Apollo XXVI, always fills out his costumes remarkably well, and his Queen Apollo XXVI Eddy Vargas was exceptionally beautiful. They were truly fantastic Peacocks, and they knew how to strut their stuff. I’m not sure who a lot of the costumers were so I can’t go into detail on all of them, but the animal kingdom was adequately covered by the American Bald Eagle (the talented and beautiful Effie Marie), the (Navy) Seal (that exceptionally handsome and really nice Richard Lucas), Aquatics, Scarlet Macaw (a sexy Jimmy Jones showing a little skin), Dragon (one of Don Johnson’s best efforts with a rather fantastic dragon following him down the runway), Cobras (the versatile Danny Fontenot and a shockingly beautiful Alan Daigrepont), Penquins, Monkeys (Nathan Wright and his Texas contingent), Arctic Fox and Polar Bear (a costume fit for a queen, really, really beautiful and well executed), Hippopotamus and Friends, and the Golden Pheasant (krewe president Mark Lafeaux). To top off this spectacular evening of
entertainment, the jungle came alive with a very royal King Apollo XXVII John Sallinger as The Lion, and his Queen Apollo XXVII Jennifer Marlow (Les Mut) as the Lioness. It was a magnificent closure to a rather magnificent bal masque. In retrospect, it makes any of the older kings and queens wish they were back on that stage participating once more. Overall, this was an A+ bal masque, thoroughly enjoyable, and one that will set the stage for any follow-up ball that has to compete with this one. On one closing note, I would like to congratulate Sam Favaro for not only taking care of things at the door but also for setting up his and Leonard Sonnier’s tables. It was sad sitting there looking at Leonard’s picture, the centerpiece of our table, but this is a ball that he would have loved. He lived and loved Mardi Gras as no other person I’ve ever known. I felt as if he was there with us sharing this wonderful evening of bal masque magic. We loved you Leonard, and you are missed tremendously. And for Truman May, this would have been a night he would have loved too. They are both remembered and will always remain with us in spirit and in beautiful memories.

ho writes our history? It could be answered at Flatscape 2008, sponsored by the Baton Rouge Gallery and the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge. The history of mankind is little more than the blending of fact and perception. The question of through whose eyes those facts are interpreted is one that is even more glaringly important in today’s age of around-the-clock news and entertainment media. The idea, for example, that history as we know it might have been written or perceived differently had the opposing side of a battle been victorious seems increasingly germane in this era of international conflict and unrest. Similarly, the question of through whose eyes and ears art is to be determined as significant is one that can be equally as important in writing a culture’s history. Baton Rouge Gallery, in conjunction with the Louisiana State Museum- Baton Rouge, proudly presents the first installment of Flatscape 2008, Who Writes Our History? on Jan. 25 at 8pm. he 2008 Outworks Festival, which opens Jan. 22, promises both madcap comedy and intense drama. The plays will be split into two three-play bills that will perform on alternating days. The festival will run through Jan. 26 with performances at 7:30pm, and on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2pm. Also on Sunday, a special performance of all six plays will be performed at 7:30pm. The six one act plays were chosen from a total of 160 submissions nationwide and include: Bill A - Call Girl by Carol Mullen, directed by George Judy, Dog Tag by Anne Bertram and Matthew A. Everett, directed by Joshua Toups, Where Things Are by Steven Schutzman, directed by Christopher Krejci; Bill B - Lesbian Nightmare by Corinne J. Kawecki, directed by John Mabry, The Heinrich Maneuver by Mark Harvey Levine, directed by Lindsey Lanson, Liberal Arts by Don LaPlant, directed by Vastine Stabler. The directors for this year’s productions range from two faculty members to two graduate students and two undergraduate students. The varied plots include a queer spy versus spy, campus controversies, a birthday party from hell, a dog’s eye view of relationships, lovesick phone sex operators, and the lesbian nightmare. The show is part of the LSU Department of Theatre Studio Season. All tickets are $6 (suggested donation) and only available at the door. This production is supported in part by the LSU Student Performing Arts Fee. The schedules are: Bill A – Jan. 22, 24 and 26 at 7:30pm and Bill B – Jan. 23 and 25 at 7:30pm and Jan. 27 at 2pm. Memory of It: Three recollected documents by David Thorne and Julia Meltzer and the critically acclaimed Ruins by Jesse Lerner. Collectively, these works help shed light on the importance of understanding the people, organizations and biases that distill our conceptions of what news and/or culture is. It’s Not My Memory of It: Three recollected documents (2003) examines the practices of secrecy and documentation by federal agencies in these times of fear and heightened security. The documentary also features CIA film and interviews that discuss the practice of “neither confirming nor denying” the existence of records and the process of separating classified and unclassified information. It’s Not My Memory of It has received critical acclaim and was honored as Best Documentary at the International Short Film Festival in 2004. Jesse Lerner’s Ruins (1999) is a film that, like some history accounts, is part fiction, part documentary. Ruins is a provocative pseudo-documentary which delights viewers with its satirical questioning of who decides what culture is and upsets their views and assumptions about history itself. It is a startling and inventive journey into the realm of video art that has received praise from the likes of the Sundance Film Festival and the NY Press. arnival, Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, call it whatever you want, but in just three weeks, the biggest, wildest party day of the year is happening in downtown Lafayette. And if you haven’t already started making plans for this once a year event, you better get with it because this is the time to cut loose and let the good times roll. The Sound Factory and Back Side are already making plans for the big day. They’ll open their doors at 8am for breakfast and cocktails. And let me tell you from experience, there’s no better way to begin the celebrations than with mimosas and Mark’s unforgettable homestyle cooking. And since they're only one block from the parade route, the Sound Factory and Back Side are the perfect place to relax and regroup while you take a much needed break from whoring for beads. So mark your calendar and put on your wildest, most outrageous outfits, because all your friends are gonna be there, and so will my trusty camera to capture the most festive ensembles. Remember, this is the one day of the year when just about anything is allowed; so you better take advantage. And it all starts in the early morning hours at Back Side. I can honestly say, I’m curious to see just how many people can make it all the way until 2am. And in the meantime, the Sound Factory and Back Side will continue with the best weekly lineup in all of Acadiana. They are open seven days a week and always
have something going on. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. His charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. And the rest of the week at Sound Factory and Back Side is just as entertaining. Between karaoke on Tuesday nights and Show Night on Sundays, they pack each night with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are fabulous drink specials and the unforgettable dance music spun by DJ Huggies. At the Back Side you can take a break from the loud music and socialize with your friends, or make some new ones. And when the conversations wear thin, all you have to do is walk around the corner to dance the night away at Sound Factory. Mardi Gras is the wildest time of year here in South Louisiana, and thanks to bars like Sound Factory and Back Side, the Acadiana gay community has a place they can begin and end the celebrations right off the parade route in the heart of downtown Lafayette. allas continues to stand out as a city rich in diversity, especially with a thriving LGBT community. As the ninth largest city in the United States, Dallas continues to shatter stereotypes with nationally publicized milestones that support and draw thousands of LGBT travelers each year. “What makes Dallas different is our residents,” says Phillip Jones, president of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Our vibrant and active community along with the city’s hospitality industry offer an inviting atmosphere that draws LGBT visitors, meetings and sports competitions to our city.” Milestones in the LGBT community continue to elevate Dallas as a city that embraces diversity. From elected gay officials, to LGBT church congregations, to years of gay pride celebrations-Dallas is beginning to be known as a gay-friendly destination. Sheriff Lupe Valdez is the only female and openly-gay Sheriff in the state of Texas. Elected as the highest ranking law enforcement official in Dallas County, Valdez is now up for re-election since her initial historical election in 2004. Other LGBT candidates have also run for city office, including Dallas restaurateur Monica Barros-Greene, a transgender female who nearly claimed a seat on the city council back in 2005. Barros-Greene lost by only a small margin.

t is nice to hear that TTT is out of the hospital and mending properly. He was hospitalized last week with an infection of his hand, but he is on the recovery list now. No, darlings, he wasn’t overdoing the deed. Whatever made you think of that? John and Phil just got back from a week’s vacation in Santa Fe, and they can’t stop talking about the wonders they saw and experienced. In fact, they are ready to go again – when there is less snow and more sun. I had the chance to experience a rare occurrence at the ball coming from Red Stick’s most beautiful couple, both in physical appearance and in their sincerity to themselves and to others. It was something personal between me and them, something that rarely happens to me in my work, and it says exactly what I commented on in last week’s column. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but for Ty and Stephen, it is a given, truly two nice and really super human beings, and that beauty

goes right to the heart and engulfs all those around them. It was nice to see Ronnie Wise once again. He was formerly with the Apollo krewe in Shreveport and started the Dallas Krewe of Apollo last year. He has always been and will always remain one of my dearest friends. We go back a long way, and it’s all been good. Two people I missed were Darren and Desmond from Bossier City. I don’t know if they were there or not, but I for one missed seeing them. It was a reunion of sorts for me and the guys from Lafayette’s Royal Order of Unicorn. Kenny and Garland are just really great guys, and I look forward to attending their bal masque on the 19th of January. There were other Lafayette friends there too including a really beautiful lady from Shreveport who can always be seen with them. Someone that really turned into a very beautiful and sexy individual was Jason, or Belinda Botox. I have seen lots of transformations in my time, but this one was truly amazing. She was gorgeous in black with a hairstyle that was by far the best to date. I see a Miss Gay America lurking here and ready to hit the scene. Go for it, sweetie! Another gorgeous couple I like to talk about is Richard and Michael. I’ve known real estate baron Richard for quite some time, and he can put Jake Gyllenhaal and Brad Pitt to shame. He is remarkably handsome, and Michael is a very distinguished partner too. They make an exceptional couple. Mayor Tom Leppert, former Mayor Laura Miller and Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle have all participated in this event over recent years. LGBT events not only promote pride in our city, but they also shape the community. The Resource Center of Dallas coordinates GayBingo, a monthly social event where proceeds go toward the support of community services. This drag queenhosted event features live performances and traditional bingo with a fun twist. Local LGBT-owned businesses also coordinate events in the community, such as the largest Halloween street party in Dallas. Each year, Cedar Springs Road is closed and made accessible for the parade of costumes - an event that attracts some others just on occasional outings in the capital city. It’s always a great experience to be around Todd Cole, Jules, John, Kyle, Michael, Sam, Al, Jeff, Cory, Pete, Eric, Nick, and so many other guys. I think this is the reason I like this season so much. It is a time of renewing old acquaintances and making new friends. It is a time to celebrate and to capture new memories that will carry over for years to come. Mardi Gras is a party, a gathering, a time to enjoy friendships, but most of all, it is a season of revelry that is only as good as what you make of it. So grab a King Cake, throw a party or two, enjoy friends, go to balls, play safe, and let the good times roll.

thousands of patrons in the heart of the gayborhood. Out Takes Dallas, a completely volunteer-driven gay and lesbian film festival, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2008. Out Takes screens LGBT films and provides monetary support to North Texas area charities. The Turtle Creek Chorale, the most recorded all men’s chorus in the world, welcomes a new artistic director, Dr. Jonathan Palant, for the first time in 21 years. The Turtle Creek Chorale has produced 33 albums and has made it to the top of the Billboard charts in the classical genre, even breaking records in the Guinness Book of World Records. With more than 300 active members, the Cathedral of Hope shines as the largest LGBT church in the world. This year, the Cathedral celebrates its expansion by breaking ground on the much-anticipated Interfaith Peace Chapel. The new 175seat chapel will house worshipping congregations of various faiths and will be available for seekers of peace who claim no faith. The Chapel is a project of the Cathedral’s Hope for Peace and Justice program which strives to promote peace and educate the public on equal rights and values. The Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau welcomes LGBT travelers to a richly diverse city. As such, they’ve developed a micro site, GLBTdallas.com, that serves as a resource to the LGBT community. This Web site is currently undergoing a major face-lift, that when completed, will feature more resources. One of the new resources that the site will feature are travel packages that will be focused on the LGBT traveler and will help guide LGBT like-minded individuals and families through the city. Soon, these packages will be rolled out with an advanced itinerary creation feature on the micro site.
