n February 11, Co-Theater Editors Brian Sands and Patrick Shannon presented the Fifth Annual Ambie Awards for theater excellence. Le Chat Noir was packed with a fun and festive crowd of theater luminaries, their friends and family members. While we crowned a “Best” in 26 categories (see list below), with nominees of such outstanding caliber, no one was a loser. We also gave out some Special Ambie Awards as noted below as well as many Glammie and a few Slammie Awards in a variety of tongue-in-cheek categories. Ambush Magazine, which sponsored the event, is very proud that over $1,000 was raised for NOCCA’s Department of Theater. In addition to presenting the Someone to Watch Out For Special Award, Executive Director of the NOCCA Institute Sally Perry spoke about NOCCA’s wide range of programs and how vital such funds are to support those youth who are dedicating themselves to the arts. Many thanks to all our presenters, particularly Civil District Court Judge Tiffany Gautier Chase; WWL-TV’s Jonathan Betz; Patrick Lee, producer and founder of the CAC Performance Support Program; and, especially Councilperson-at-Large Jacquelyn Clarkson, who made it back to New Orleans from Baton Rouge in recordbreaking time in order to be part of the ceremony. A huge round of applause to Musical Director Jonne Dendinger and all our performers (Tracey Collins of The Fix, the casts of Bitter/Sweet (Rich Arnold, Natalie Boyd, Michael Tramontin), Broadway on Demand (Rikke Gee, Philip Gordon, Brandi Cotogno Lopez, Christopher Woods), Naked Boys Singing (Jason George, Philip Gordon, Marshall Harris, Travis Resor), Purlie (Idella Johnson, Asia Rainey), Singin’ in the Rain (Bryan Reilly, Josh St. Cyr) and the incomparable Varla Jean Merman who also presented an award as her alter ego, Jeff Roberson) who gave of their talents so generously. And, as always, we couldn’t have made the Ambies happen without the tremendous support of Le Chat’s Barbara Motley and her incredible staff (Su Gonczy, Brian Johnston, Thaddeus and Phil). As we salute the best of the best who trod the boards in 2007, we are already enjoying the 2008 Season and look forward to many more fabulous shows this year! entertainment Chinese Acrobats and Russian Dancers Entertain at Beau Rivage in the new show “Y”

B

ILOXI, MS - Beau Rivage’s new production show Y opened to audiences recently and will run through June 15 in the 1,550-seat Beau Rivage Theatre. Y is cross-cultural fusion featuring a cast of 50 award-winning performers from China’s famed Hebei Acrobatic Troupe and Russia’s respected dance company Todes. “The 80-minute production is a dynamic blend of artistry and adrenaline, a mix of Chinese acrobatics and Russian dancing that combines spectacular choreography, costumes and state-of-the-art sound and lighting effects,” said Terry Burden, vice president of entertainment at Beau Rivage. “The talent in this production is on an entirely different level.” Established in the 1970s, the Hebei Acrobatic Troupe began as a province-level professional acrobatic troupe and has grown to become a world famous large-scale ensemble. They have won numerous international awards and its main strength is formed of the professional youth acrobats, as every retiring acrobat has the responsibility of training the new to be top-quality acrobats. The troupe combines modern technique with its deep rooted traditional art foundation. Under the direction of the concept -”glory in the prosperity of the troupe and shame in the degeneration of it,” the artists create superior and excellent acrobatic masterpieces with new styles, high skills and elegant presentations. Choreographed by Alla Duchova, Russia’s foremost choreographer and head of

the country’s top dance company Todes, Y blends amazing acts of skill and agility with cutting edge modern dance. Duchova, who operates 25 dance schools and studios throughout Russia, Latvia, the Ukraine, and other countries formerly part of the Soviet Union, has been described

as “today’s Russian answer to Bob Fosse.” Individual tickets are $9.95, $19.95 and $29.95 plus tax and service fee for evening and matinee performances. Show times are 7:30pm Monday-Thursday; 6pm and 8:30pm on Saturday; and 3pm and 7pm on Sunday; no performances on Friday. For tickets, contact the Beau Rivage Ticket Office at 888.566.7469. Y room packages start at $153 plus tax, based on double occupancy and include deluxe accommodations, two tickets to Y and two Theatre Snack Packs, which include a small non-alcoholic drink, small popcorn and candy. For reservations or information, call 888.567.6667 or visit www.beaurivage.com.

here in the hell is this year going? And what is with this weather? One week summer next winter, I am afraid to set out my

ene J. F. Piazza has written and directed some very well done and valid theatrical pieces at his own well operated venue Actors Theater in Metairie. Piazza constantly improves his obvious and many talents as demonstrated by this excellent production of his most recent plays in a collection of three offerings Stool Pigeons, The Four Aces, and A Review To Kill. Well worth attending not only for the fluid scripts and the very excellent dialogue, the ensemble acting of the handsome guys who play the roles in these three fine little showlets, Danny Martin, John Breerwood, Josh Stover and Robert Facio, each has a tight handle on his role and plays it with a naturalness that brings subtle, charming, and moving moments to the stage. Bravo

to these actors! Piazza’s direction was right on the mark and his simple set concepts worked in every play. Nothing fancy here. Just four stools for Stool Pigeons, a couch, kitchen table, chairs and a coffee table for The Four Aces and a table, a tape player, and a chair for my favorite, A Review To Kill. These easy sets and the crisp purity of the scripts make these theatrical vehicles excellent for little theater productions everywhere. Producers check them out. Call Mr. Piazza after this run. Stool Pigeons is simply done. Each actor is seated on a stool and does a monologue under a spot light. The first one, Football, is a humorous tale about a young kid 11 years old whose over concerned mother signs him up for a football [continued on Main-21]

have a firm conviction that all the ‘isms’ and hatreds that we suffer from have a nasty habit of worming their way into our beings whether we agree with them or not. Between racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia (and others!) we are attacked from all sides by negative impressions of what we do, but most importantly what we are. Being attacked for what you are is many many times more damaging than being criticized for what we choose to do. This is why I get myself in a flap whenever people describe homosexuality as a ‘life-style’ to me! It makes it sound like RVing or nudism! My sexuality is part of what makes me ‘me’, at its basic level it is completely outside of my control - meaning I cannot change it by any act of will - and is no more a life-style than the color of my skin. The reason many religious people try to characterize sexuality as a ‘life-style’ is that they are smart enough to realize that if it is outside of your control then they have no grounds for criticizing you for it, therefore they have to describe it as a ‘choice’. Furthermore, the clever ones amongst them have worked out that if it is part of your ‘created’ nature then God must have had a hand in it! Rather than accept that, they would happily turn their backs on evidence, common sense, science and God in order to preserve their right to hate. The way some people go on about sexuality being a ‘choice’ leads me to believe that either they are just not paying attention, or they are bisexual. The only people that can choose who they are going to sleep with based upon equal attraction are bisexual – the only people truly presented with any meaningful gender choice when it comes to sexual expression. The fallout from all this is internalized

homophobia, transphobia, sexism and racism. What is internalized homophobia? It is the seeping conviction that we are less than equal, that we are capable of less, that we deserve less – gay people suffer from it, as do other groups who are victims of prejudice, and it is a poisonous thing. It is believing the hatred despite yourself, it is hearing something so many times that it starts to sink in. In a spiritual sense it is something I battle with every day! In church, groups of strong, talented, amazing people will often ‘settle’ for little because of internalized homophobia - we are ‘just’ gay people so we cannot aspire to the same things as straight folk. NONSENSE!!! We are currently building a church here, so far only in people, aspirations and finances, but soon in bricks and mortar as well. The tools we have to build this are some of the most talented and inspired people I have ever met! We have a first class product; with spirit filled worship. joyful fellowship and pretty good preaching (even if I do say so myself!) yet there was still some nervousness about reaching out to grasp our full potential – and this was only because we are a majority gay congregation. We will and must - as a community overcome internalized homophobia, and all the other isms and phobias as well. For my part I intend to be a part of a large, successful and financially solvent church that has the means to speak with a powerful voice, not just to the GLBT community, but to everybody, because our message is not just ‘good enough’ it is better! Mainstream Christianity desperately needs to hear our perspective, our awareness of the fullness and depth of God’s love – our message may help to save the faith from hatred and fear; two things that have the

sappho psalm ...from Main-19 mance troop is made up of 13 members with an extended cast of 15 so that each act is fresh, sometimes funny, and always entertaining. The first of these female to male shows started with the Hardly Boys. The performers came together as friends and partners who wanted to have some fun. In 2003, a bouncer from the Pub asked the two groups to appear. They were a hit with live singers and guitar plays and drag queens. As time went on there were fewer queens and many more kings as their popularity grew. The group does five to six shows a month at a variety of clubs like The New Bar, Sanctuary, Cowpokes and Billy’s in Slidell. They have even performed musical drag plays like “Tainted Love.” Drag kings are becoming huge across the world’s gay community. Once a year, they gather for a convention-like weekend called IDKE – International Drag Kings Extravaganza. In 2006, the IDKE was held in Austin and the Carnival Kings were asked to perform both Friday and Saturday nights. Before the Carnival Kings, Drag Kings held shows at Kim’s (Female Trouble) and Cheers once located across the river. Kim’s and Cheers are gone but the drag kings of New Orleans are going strong. Like all of us, the Kings were affected by Katrina. Only five members of the Carnival Kings returned to the city but the Pub still wanted them back. On November 15, 2005, the group performed at the Pub with six people doing 12 acts. Soon new performers began to apply and the group grew to a healthy number. Who makes up the Carnival Kings? Lesbians, a handful of female to male trans boys and a few bi women make up the group. The group is diverse and yet harmonious. And drag queens are still invited to join them on stage. The original reason for forming drag king shows was mainly activism in answer to the drag queen performers. Today the reason is purely entertainment for the Carnival Kings. I had the great pleasure of interviewing Thea, stage name Ike Ilia, and Jenna, stage name Harvey Wallbanger. We spent a delightful few hours together and I personally am looking forward to seeing their show very soon. I asked about the respect angle of the show. I’ve found myself very insulted more than once by a drag queen’s performance. Like you’ve heard me say before, there are enough ugly women in this world without men making us (women) more unattractive. Thea assured me that the attitude of the performers is very respectful. They do not wish to make men look ridiculous or unattractive. The New Orleans group is different from the usual IDKE members. It is political and theatrical. Doing acts one time potential to kill it stone dead. Remember, you are not second best in anything – you are joint best with every other soul on Earth, and can expect, and demand what is your due! Rev Clinton Crawshaw is the pastor of The Big Easy Metropolitan Community Church, which meets at 5pm every Sunday at 1333 S. Carrollton Ave (S Matthew’s church).

only makes them more entertaining. That must take up a lot of rehearsal time, I thought out loud. The women laughed. We rehearse each act but not the entire show at one time as a rule. So how would you describe the differences between drag king and queens? Queens are individuals like cats. Be careful or you’ll get your eyes scratched. Kings are more of a pack like dogs. We run together for protection as much as fun. An example of that is the Carnival Kings members got together to discuss this interview before it was held. This was their way of showing respect for each member and their history. The members of the troop take financial responsibility and elect managers to oversee the music, web site, money, bookings and general activities. Cast members are not decision making members. Only troop members can take on that responsibility. There are performers from many walks of life – some college students, some career women. College students like to perform most, I was told. And they get support from their schools in attendance and promotion. The Kings do fund-raising as well as shows for profit. A few of their charities that have gained from the Kings’ shows are Food For Friends, NO/AIDS Task Force, adopting an AIDS family for Christmas, Habitat for Humanities and the Lisa Gibbons Alzheimer’s Association. After lots of talk and laughter and sharing of stories, yes, they were kind enough to listen to my stories too; I ask one final question before they had to get their passports stamped and head back to New Orleans from Metairie. What are the goals of the Carnival Kings? Having diverse members of the troop is very important. We want to continue performing, to embrace change in entertainment and awareness and have fun together on and off stage. I know that is a great plan and I applaud these wonderful women.

A

nother great group with a plan is the New Orleans Gay Men’s Chorus. I was joined recently by PFLAG’s Julie and Courtney and my friend Karen for their Love in Any Language concert at Temple Sinai. Once again we were thrilled. Many thanks to artistic director Cedric Bridges, pianist Jesse Reeks and the Men of the Chorus. One of my favorite soloist, baritone Kelly Kerr, sang La Vie En Rose, a song I dearly enjoyed. John Fichtel pleased us with his rich, full tenor voice doing I Know About Love.Always a favorite Tommy Jones sang a lovely solo and duets with Brian Thompson and John Fichtel. You’ll Never Know was well sung by tenor Tom Lilly and tenor Chris Moix sang I Don’t Know How To Love Him. No concert is complete without Cedric’s rich, beautiful tenor, and we were spellbound twice by Cedric. Again, thank you, thank you. I want to know who made the delicious fruit filled cookies for the reception that followed the concert. I’ll continue writing true and wonderful things about the chorus if I can get some more of those cookies. I’m trying to find the 25# I lost. I guess I’ll never be able to attend a Chorus concert again without missing two of my favorite people (recently) Andre and (from the 1980s) Douglas. Guess they are singing with the angels and helping us all hit the high notes.

dam Charles (Rocky) Hebert of Gretna died at 11:35pm on Sunday, February 3, 2008 after a long illness. He was 49 years old. Floyd Joseph Theriot Catahoula - Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at St. Rita Catholic Church in Catahoula, for Floyd Joseph Theriot, 54, who passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans. As a registered nurse he excelled in caring and exhibited compassion to everyone. He loved his family, friends of Catahoula, as well as his extended family in New Orleans. trodding the boards ...from M-20 team with a “spitting” coach. The kid hates football and I can relate to that myself. Danny Martin was amusing and confident sharing this tale. Stolen Goods starring the excellent Josh Stover is a more serious story. Stover tells us about a robbery and assault in which he is injured for life both physically and spiritually. Valentine’s Day concerns a guy who seems to strike out, even on this day of high expectations and romance. Not only does he buy red boxer shorts to impress his girl when “the moment” arrives, only to step in some

nasty stinky dog doo doo as he enters her apartment but he never seems to make a hit with theladies. John Breerwood gives us a wry and amusing performance with nuance as he eventually equates all romance with dog doo doo. Best Friends is an autobiographical one act about four guys who have dreams of going to Hollywood and becoming rich and famous. It’s a good study of four young guys, each different, and each with the dreams of all young aspiring people and the ensemble acting in this piece is marvelous. Danny Marin as Chris, John Breerwood and Brian, Josh Stover as John Robert Facio as Ray are excellent and totally believable. A Review To Kill is my favorite of the three. It a quick playlet with a heavy and very theatrically worthy plot about a critic who has possibly and unfairly driven a playwright insane because of his unkind and unjust reviews. No more about this plot. I don’t want to ruin it for patrons nor do I want to put any ideas in some of the more “ego sensitive” local actors and playwrights I have reviewed. You know who you are, oh evil ones who cannot live without your full

length mirrors and monkey minions. But I digress. Robert Facio as the distressed playwright Coty Deckbar and Danny Martin as the abducted critic Payton Riffco were excellent! Don’t miss these fine plays!

he Jefferson Performing Arts Society is now running The Great American Trailer Park Musical in the beautiful Westwego Performing Arts Theater. It’s another hit for this worthy group of talented people and the theater was full to capacity the night we saw this vibrant show. Hill billy, rock a billy, or country and western music is not what I prefer to listen to, and after seeing those hilarious “white trash” trailer park parodies that Richard Read and the Running With Scissors group does every year it’s a hard act to top, but JPAS has done that with a well tuned, high quality production of this trailer park [continued on Main-23]

it to go on forever. But alas, nothing ever does. Manny was getting wilder and wilder by the minute, twisting and turning Jake’s body in ways he thought it would never go, but heightened by the passion, Jake succumbed. Just as Manny let out the most animalistic growl, they lost their balance and tumbled out of the bed and onto the floor. The sound was so loud above that Jim sat straight up in his bed.” What in the hell was that?” “Huh.” “It sounded like someone fell below,” Jim stated flatly. Carlos laughed. “More than likely just my cousin, welcoming the new guest to your humble abode, you know how he enjoys that.” “Hell in a handbag. I had forgotten anyone was coming.” He turned facing Carlos. “It sounds like it was all taken care of.” There was nothing but quite. “Don’t fret about it. I’m sure the client will get a little shut eye before looking around for something else. Why don’t we catch a few more private moments ourselves. Jim smiled at him. “You always say the most perfect things.” This time Jim placed his hands around Carlos’ head and pulled him into

his arms, kissing him with a wide open mouth. Jim’s breath was a little sour this morning from all the alcohol they had consumed last night, but it did not matter to Carlos, to him it tasted like mother’s milk. Jim was lying flat on his back. Carlos broke the kiss and in the smoothest change of positions was seated above Jim. Carlos wrapped his legs beneath Jims positioning himself just above his manhood. Slowly and methodically Carlos began lowering himself, Jim could barely believe the sensations he was feeling, up until now there had only been an oral exchange, with precautions, between them. This was more than he had thought would ever occur between the two of them. He shook, just a little bit, causing the man above him to laugh just a little. “Are you cold my love? Should I get up and turn on the heat?” “If you do I’ll scream.” “I think maybe I should,” he allowed himself to slid down a little more, “I certainly don’t want to be liable for any discomfort you're feeling.” “Believe me when I say, when I tell you, there is no discomfort. None. Nada.” “If you say so sir.” He stretched sliding up a bit and then relaxed sliding down. Jim let out a deep breath. “You like that?” “Very much.” Carlos did it again…then again …and again. Jim grabbed his hips and sliding him up and down set the rhythm. When they had finished, Carlos slowly got off Jim and smiling asked foolishly if he had enjoyed it. “There are no words to describe the way I felt, the way it felt.” “So it was good?” “Beyond good, it was fantastic. Norbert, has tried to take her out to some classy place like maybe the Roller Derby Hash & Dash Delight for dinner, but she just can’t do it. It’s their 20th wedding anniversary and he wants to take her to a classy ice follies show. Will she or won’t she get to go? Let us see what happens when ANOTHER WOMAN moves into the trailer park. A stripper fleeing from her scary boyfriend who might be only tooooooo willing to go to an ice follies show with Norbert. Hmmmmmmm. Will she stand by her man? Will her man stand by her or will he leave her like a stale buttered biscuit on a tinfoil tray gettin hard in the sun all day? I am yet to see Ms. West do a single thing on stage out of character and this divine actress does not fail in her tender hearted role as Jeannine. She is funny with perfect timing. She is touching with believability. And like the rest of this good cast, she sings like a mockingbird. The OTHER WOMAN, Pippi, played with world-weary yet heart breaking delight is Jessie Terrebonne, another actress who can do no wrong. She just whipped into the character of the “slut” from Husband Stealers Incorporated with a sublime tackiness and a lot of well chosen charm. She makes this stripper gal character into a traditional man-eater that we all end up rooting for because she’s really not all that bad, considering. Her prey, Norbert, the unhappy unbedded husband of Ms. Agoraphobia, Jeannine, takes one lusty horny look at her and rises to the occasion. Remember this is an adult show with music and the affair begins. Poor Norbert, brilliantly play by Ford Dieth, follows his pee pee and is hooked by the sexy other woman.Love blooms amid Wal Mart mentalies and hooker

dreams for a long playing man. Mr. Dieth creates an unforgettable character in his role as Norbert and he has a fine singing voice. He was perfect for this part and added much to the flavor and high quality of the show. Bravo to this performer who was new to me on stage in such a large well done role. In a smaller part, handsome Richard Arnold takes a turn as a ten gallon hat wearing ex prisoner who is looking for his girlfriend who just might have moved into the trailer park to hide out. Mr. Arnold, as usual, does an excellent job in his role of Duke, making a stereotype into a sexy lil’ hunk of manly white trash. Directed by the multi talented Sean Patterson with a true vision of trailer park musical tragedy and a near psychic sense of hilarity, Patterson brings us a bouquet of plastic-flowers-sentimentality, six pack sexuality, and beer battered banalities all made very funny. It’s easy to understand why this show is such a joy and success when we consider this all star cast he-having on stage with toe-tapping songs and witty adult lyrics! Starring in their own field of sharp and beautiful talents are the musicians directed by Jefferson Turner (keyboard), Mike Vila (guitar), Brad Buras (bass) and Andrew Moran (percussion). They can twang out those C&W sounds like hit paraders. The set is a real treat. Think two trailers which can open up to become a strip tease joint in one case and the living room of its resident in the other case. Cameron MacDonald designed this fine set with help from Dina Schaefer. Cecile Casey Covert did the wonderful “white trash” costumes, and the fun finger flipping choreography was by the gorgeous

Mark's Story: Part Five

O

n the third floor, in the master bedroom, of the bed and breakfast, barely a soul moved, the only sign that either man was alive was the quiet breathing of one and then the other, the slowly rising and falling of their chest cavities as did the necessary bodily functions, which kept them going. Jim’s arm was draped lazily over Carlos’ back, not actually holding him, but just resting there. They had grown so comfortable in the last twenty-four hours that had one not known one would have thought their relationship had blossomed while Carlos was still in high school. Carlos turned to face Jim, in his sleep, Jim’s hand just skimmed along the top of his skin, so softly Carlos didn’t notice it was there. Not so in the suite just below them where Manny was topping Jake, the new arrival, they were in the throws of wild animal passion. The grunting and groaning were like two animals in the jungles of Africa, consumed by their lust completely, mating for just the moment with no future in mind. Manny blurted something out in Spanish, and thrust deep into Jake. Jake had no clue what so ever what the god-like stud had said pounding him and he just didn’t care. It just felt so good he wanted

trodding the boards ...from M-23 the other side of the tracks, Lin, Pickles, and Jeannie. Lin who was named Lin by her mama cause she was born on a linoleum is a down home woman of easy virtue played with caustic charm and angled grace by Morla Gorrondona who we first see on stage sitting in a plastic weave chair with her legs spread out wide enough to let a Lykes Super Tanker float by. The tall thin model’s bod of this fine actress lends itself well to her concept of a trailer park woman who wears super short shorts and a Lil Abner shirt with one sleeve hanging down over her shoulder. Having last seen Ms. Gorrondona as a very virgin Orthodox Jewess, all sincerely and sobs, a demure daughter of her father in JPAS’s excellent production of Fiddler On The Roof, she created a remarkably different character in this role, a tribute to the mercurial talent of a true actress. Carrie Black plays Pickles with a gamin sweetness and lots of sparkle. She’s always suffering from psycho-induced imaginary pregnancy and lags a thought or two behind her fellow suffering sisters. Ms. Black creates a solid well conceived character as the dipsy little Miss Pickles. Is she pregnant or not? Just you wait and see. The divine Cammie West-Patterson or Cammie Patterson-West depending who’s on top that week I guess, plays the central character Jeannine in this wonderfully tacky trailer trash faux tragedy. She suffers from agoraphobia and can’t step out of her trailer door frame ever since her baby was snatched from her arms twenty years ago. For twenty years her husband,

are you going?” “To work, my dear man, I do still have a job here you know.” “It doesn’t mean you have to be on time, you know, I do have some pull with the owner. Jim reached out for him, but missed him as he turned. “I’m not on time; I’m already an hour late.” Carlos disappeared into the bathroom. Jim made a move to get up, but fell back among his pillows, he was not getting up this early, and his head was pounding from the night before, what little of it he could feel. “Carlos”, he called out, “Please bring me a head ache powder from the cabinet.” But he could hear the shower running, so he knew, hopelessly, that he had not been heard and drug his butt out of bed and headed for the relief he so desperately needed. As he was passing the window he heard voices in the pool. Early for a swim he thought, well not all his guests had stayed up consuming unheard of amounts of alcohol, the night before, and after all they were an hour late getting out of bed. He stopped momentarily to take a peek out at the pool, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. No, it couldn’t possibly be, but the man swimming in the pool turned his face from Jim that quick. For the briefest of seconds he thought the man in the pool was Mark. He smiled to himself and let the drape fall from his hand and headed back on his original course to the bathroom. Upon opening the bathroom door, he was greeted by Carlos, with a towel wrapped around his waist, shaving at the sink. The shower was running and steam was filling the room. “I figured you’d follow me in here.” “Did you hear me call for a headache power?” Carlos smiled at him, in that sly way only he had that conveyed the answer of course I did, but I wanted you in here, for reasons of my own. Jim got a package of Goodys out of the medicine cabinet, went to the second sink, poured a glass of water and downed it, grimacing. “Don’t like the taste of that?” Jim grimaced again, “Try some of this.” His dropped his towel on the floor. Jim was slightly embarrassed; he had been taken care of all right this morning, but had forgotten about his partner, something he knew was the one thing that should never happen if you wanted to make something work. Carlos grabbed his arm, gently and steering him into the shower stall, made it very clear just what he wanted. [continued on Main-25]

and talented Lynne Lawrence. With a high caliber cast, right-on-key fine singing, chuck a luck fun dancing and a vibrant sentimental script, you can’t go wrong with JPAS’s The Great American Trailer Park Musical. Bouncy, busty, campy, and charming all at once, it is a great little “white trash” musical, one of the best of that genre about the American Trailer Park and it’s beer bottle drug slugging inhabitants, all of which have broken hearts of gold.

one last song ...from Main-24 Down in the pool Mark (Jake) swam lazily around it’d circumference, watching Manny toting the loads of linen back to the washing shed. “Are you sure you don’t need help with that?” “No, I do this every day, half the rooms on one day and the rest the next that is unless there are accidents.” “Accidents?” Manny snickered. “Believe me you really don’t want to know, the run from the mundane to the bizarre. It would only make me less desirable to you.” “Never, I could stay in bed twenty-four seven, if I could afford it.” “I have weekly rates.” “I bet you do.” But when I checked in, well that was a special treat for me, I don’t always pay.” “And I don’t always charge.” Manny winked at Jake as he left the poolside.” Well Mark (Jake) thought to himself that certainly is good to know. He was sure Manny would be up to another roll in the hay when he caught up with his chores and he wanted to make sure he was available. He grabbed a float from the pool deck, placed it in the pool and laid his head on it, closing his eyes and just drifted at his leisure. Carlos and Jim had toweled each other dry. Carlos dressed for work in his bright tee-shirt and matching thong, kissing Jim cheek he headed out the door, down the steps and into the garden to care for the plants. Going directly behind the house to the shed to get his tools, he didn’t even notice the guest in the pool. Coming back he got down on all fours, with his back to the pool and began hand tilling the soil between the plants preparing to replace them with younger ones. Jake opened his eyes, staring right up Carlos tong. He splashed water in Carlos direction, wetting him down, thinking it was Manny. Carlos turned around abruptly, just as Jim on the third floor drew his drapes open. Mark stared at Carlos in shock. “My God, I’m sorry I thought you were Manny.” “I’m his cousin Carlos, people make that mistake all the time.” Jim stared down at the pool in shock, it was Mark, and he had not been mistaken earlier. Carlos stood up and walked over to the pool to shake the new guest’s hand, Mark couldn’t help at staring at his package. “I’m Carlos like I said; it’s a pleasure to meet you.” “Jake,” Mark responded,” Jake’s the name, sex is the game.” Carlos laughed politely. “Well I’m dating the owner, but I’ll be happy to introduce you to either of my cousins.” “Lucky owner is all I can say. He must be quite a guy.” “He is, in fact you can meet him right now, and here he comes.” Mark turned to look and got the shock of his young life, if he had false teeth they would have fallen into the pool. Jim approached the pool, trying to stay calm. Manny was coming around from the laundry room. “Well Mark, it’s good to see you after all this time,” Jim faked a smile. “Mark? I thought your name was Jake.” Both Manny and Carlos said in unison. “Well it is when he’s on the prowl,” Jim said with a tone of sarcasm. “I take it that the two of you know each other?” Carlos asked. “We sure do. In fact we knew each other quite well at one time, wouldn’t you say so Jim?” Mark gave a wink in Jim’s direction. “I thought so for a time, until I found out about the real you.” “The real me? I’m not exactly sure just whom the real me is Mark, the rational side of me or Jake the sexual addict.” “The sex addict?” “Carlos, I know I mentioned having had a lover in the past and how badly I had been hurt and why I was afraid to date anyone seriously, well this is him. I don’t know how he found me here.” Jim’s eyes were watering up. “I had no idea you were here, there was no mention of who owned the place in the brochure I read, it just sounded like a great place, and it is. You being here is just a bonus. Sort of the surprise inside the box. But I’m glad you’re here, I’ve been trying to reconnect with you for so long.” Mark got out of the pool, Jim couldn’t help scanning his body, and it was just as he remembered it. Mark had

kept himself in great shape. “I’d like another chance, now that I know my problem; I know I can conquer it with your help. Mark reached for Jim, and at first Jim started to extend his hand towards him, but at the last second stopped short.” “Hold on a second here, we’ve made a commitment to each other here.” Carlos was not amused, “doesn’t that count for anything?” “And we’ve shared many a night and I know that he knows that deep in my heart I love no one but him. I know now that I can and will set it right between us. Think about it Jim, have you been happy since we’ve been apart, I know that I haven’t, you know that we belong to one another, you’ve always said that.” Mark reached for him again, but still did not connect. Carlos turned and started to walk off. “Where are you going?” “This is something that only you can decide.” He sat down his gardening things and went inside and upstairs to the third floor suite. Manny quietly slipped away. Mark walked over to Jim grabbing him tightly and pulling him towards him. Tears were streaming down Jim’s cheek; quietly he thought how many times he thought of just such a day, that the two of them would be back in each others arms.

If only it could be, a life together at last. They kissed deeply and Marks hands explored Jims body, knowing just where to go. Tears flowed down Carlos’ cheeks as he dropped the drape that covered the window he was watching from. He began packing at once and when Jim entered the home he was just closing his overnight bag. He looked at Jim, holding back his tears. “I just wanted to say one thing, I do care.” “And I have just one thing to say to you as well. I’m sorry, but I do care as well. Mark is packing right now; I got him a room down the street at Carl’s place. It’s a clean slate for me, for us.” They embraced and they both could have heard that ONE LAST SONG from last night. Maybe this time I’ll be lucky. The end.

ell, the temps in Minneapolis have been a little on the frigid side, but that hasn’t stopped our Wild Bill from continuing his wicked – oops – winning ways. He called me a few minutes ago to let me know he was keeping his weenie inside. It was zero degrees when he got up this morning, so it’s not exactly the kind of weather that welcomes you outside. Bill said that Trent and Brock (who I had dinner with back during football season) had thrown a very nice Mardi Gras Party, so their experiences in Louisiana must have really been rewarding for them. Or maybe they just wanted to make Bill feel less homesick. I use homesick a little loosely here. After all, if you have a sexy stud like Chris around, there just isn’t that much time to be homesick. I was also told that these guys were going to start a Prime Timers group in Minneapolis, so this sounds like a lot of fun. It will mean a lot of get-togethers to socialize and be with friends. I do miss the get-togethers that used to take place at Bill’s home here off Highland Road. The meals were great, the friendships were outstanding, and just being among friends was such welcome and nice experiences. I guess I miss this more than I realized.

Another cold spot of late has been Las Vegas. Of course, my Acadiana buddy Tommy has a new home out there, and I have a standing invitation to visit him. Since I prefer the warmer temps, I think I will wait a while to make another trip to Nevada. Besides, I have to make arrangements with Tommy so he can be off while I’m there, or I suppose he could just hook me up with a buddy like former Baton Rougean Buddy of Splash fame and his gorgeous and sexy other half Sammy. After all, hiking in the Red Rock Mountain area is always something to look forward to when you don’t care for all the casinos along the Strip. In fact, I still want to use Las Vegas as the stopping off place before driving over to Sequoia National Park inside California. It’s closer to drive there from Las Vegas than from San Francisco, one of my other destinations planned for later this year. With five free trips earned, I need to hit the trail once again. Not only has Minneapolis and Las Vegas been a little on the cold side, but so has the wonderful Windy City herself, Chicago. There are several ex-Baton Rouge friends there. One in particular, the sexy young and gorgeous bear stud Rod, both in name and member, is now out of school and teaching. He worked long and

here is less than a month to go before Easter and the big Spring Break celebrations. And while it may seem like a lull in the usually festive atmosphere that dominates South Louisiana, anybody who has been on Jefferson Street can testify that things are as wild as ever. Sound Factory, along with Back Side, have not slowed a bit since Mardi Gras. They are the one place you can always depend on for a good time. They’ re open seven days a week and have a weekly lineup that rivals all the other bars. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. His charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. So if you haven’t been out lately on a Tuesday night or you think Karaoke Night is just the same old thing, you definitely need to come by. Whether you enjoy being on stage or simply watching those that do, you’re sure to have an awesome night; Chad will make sure of that. And the rest of the week at Sound Factory and Back Side is just as entertaining. Between karaoke on Tuesday nights

and Show Night on Sundays, they pack each night with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are fabulous drink specials and the unforgettable dance music spun by DJ Huggies. And unlike many other dance clubs, Sound Factory has a quieter more relaxed side, the Back Side, where you can take a break from the loud music and socialize with your friends, or make some new ones. And when the conversations wear thin, all you have to do is walk around the corner to dance the night away. What more could anybody ask for? It’s two bars for the price of one, and it’s right in the heart of Downtown Lafayette. It’s no wonder so many people travel from all over to come out in Lafayette. It offers a unique culture and an unbeatable nightlife. So next time you’re trying to figure out something to do, come by Sound Factory and Back Side. You’ re sure to have an unforgettable night. If you’ve been hiding out since Mardi Gras, it’s high time you get out of the house. Just because one of the biggest parties of the year is over doesn’ t mean the fun has to end. Sound Factory and Back Side make every night a celebration. So come check out what you’ve been missing.

hard for his career break, and now he is happy and making others happy at the same time. I recall when he was my neighbor across the street. Time passes so quickly, but the memories are there, and they are all good ones. He also was one of those individuals with a beautiful voice, and I recall he used that to his advantage while living here. When he moved from here, another friend, the absolutely beautiful Blake, moved at the same time. It was a great loss for our fair city but a definite gain for the Windy City. Blake was always an extremely nice and affectionate friend. I was surprised when I learned of his decision to move, but he is now in a great relationship up Chicago way, and that is a good thing, for him and for his other half. His friendship will always be remembered fondly, and I expect to see him again in the future, either here or when I drop in on them in the cold north country. Cold keeps me from going to Denver to visit with Joy. This was one wonderful and gracious friend. I somehow missed her when she came down for Christmas last year. In fact, the last time I saw her was two years ago at the Farmers Market here. We still stay in touch, but I’ve lost contact with her twin brother. He was another neighbor, actually the one who got the apartment that Rod vacated when he moved away. At any rate, I don’t want to miss a chance meeting with Joy on her next trip down here. For some reason, I’ve never really wanted to visit Denver. Maybe I just like California, Key West, and Cape Cod more.

Hot Spots

I

’d like to say that Baton Rouge is a hot spot, but the temps here keep bouncing back and forth. One day it’s hot and the next day it’s time for long sleeves and jackets. I’m a tropical gardener so I have to keep close tabs on the weather. When I get tired of writing or reading, I head out to the garden to see what I can accomplish there. It’s a neverending job. Now that I have two “hot” new neighbors, I’ll have to stay on my toes to keep up with them. Robert and Brandon are turning their recently purchased home into a charming place. They are going to make our Spanish Town neighborhood residents stand up and take notice of their accomplishments. They are constantly coming up with new ideas for decorating both the yard and the house, inside and out. Next up will be a swimming pool, fences, new paint job, and more landscaping. They are tireless in their efforts to improve their home, and it is such a welcomed change. They are indeed a grand asset to the entire neighborhood. Bungalow Lane is fortunate to have them. This street in our historic old section of Baton Rouge is also home to the sexy David of interior decorating fame. Whether he is out jogging or riding his bike in those ever-so-sexy International Male black shorts (the really revealing kind), this is another asset to the community. His home is also a magnificent piece of restoration both inside and out. Something tells me that the entire street is going to benefit from all the fabulous work that is being done on these two blocks of prime real estate. It’s the hot spot in the heart of Spanish Town. Josie has done a lot of work on her

home too. The new roof and railing around her extended porch is quite nice. She always decorates her glassed-in front porch during holidays, and it doesn’t stop here. Her magic techniques are seen inside and out. Doc Jim also has created a little paradise in Spanish Town. His new complex has some of the most beautiful fountains and swimming pool decorations. It is completely hidden from view except from a nosey neighbor who insisted on placing a chair on her upper deck and facing his secluded area. Oh, well, honey, just drop your drawers and give her a thrill. It will probably be a great improvement in her life. I never worry about nosey neighbors, and even if I did, they can peek to their heart’s delights. People are strange when it comes to what is going on around them, but peeking doesn’t come under my list of things to do. For me, I say just open the damn gate and come on in. I’d like to tell you about a really cute and sexy young man who is a neighbor, but I can’t describe him too closely for fear that you might recognize him. The reason is the fact that he is married, has a lovely wife, is a very hard worker, and is just an extremely nice individual. However, he is certainly the best piece of eye candy in all of Spanish Town. My heart skips a beat every time he comes down my street. Be still my heart!

suppose best is the right word to describe Mikey. I told you about him last week and how I missed seeing him at Splash. He’s moved on to a fine career, and I do wish him the very best. It isn’t often that a guy appeals to me in such a positive and fine way. It just seems to me that Mikey’s personality causes all around him to react in such a nice way to his presence. I always felt that way when he was working at Splash, and when he came back to celebrate at the Spanish Town Parade, it made me realize how much I miss him and his smiling and every-so beautiful face. There was never a time that I wasn’t shown the greatest respect from this guy. He is just one of a kind, and I’m hoping him much happiness and success in his new job in Hattiesburg. Someone else who I don’t see enough of is my lawyer friend Joseph. I know he’s busy, but I haven’t been out doing a beer run with him in quite some time. Of course, when it comes to my legal needs, he shows the expertise that I need, and he always comes through timely and in great form. And speaking of form, he really has a nice one. I mean the guy is simply gorgeous from head to toe and “all” points in between. Trust me. I know. If you are ever in need of legal advice, I would highly recommend him. When it comes to real estate, my buddy Richard is a good one to deal with. I’ll tell you more about him later. He has lots of plans that I will explain to you in detail. It’s just not the right time to do that now. Guy and Richard’s last trip included lots of people. I wish I had known about it sooner. I’ve always wanted to go to Cabo San Lucas, but I prefer to be with a group when I go out of the country. I’m an island kind of guy. The Caribbean is one of my favorite areas to visit, but I’ve always heard [continued on Expose-3]

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-2 good things about Cabo San Lucas. If it isn’t an island in my itinerary, I usually pick another of my favorite places, Costa Rica. I think with age, I’ve grown to be more of a homebody. It just seems that I always have another deadline to meet in my writing or someone wants something in way of a photography assignment. That’s all well and good, but sometimes I do just have to “get out of Dodge City” for a brief spell. When this happens, I usually just head out to New Orleans for food, friends, and shopping. Shopping in Baton Rouge is really a competitive situation now. With all the new Perkins Rowe complex, the additions to the Mall of Louisiana, the upscale Towne

Center, and even some of the smaller strip malls, there is much to do here. The only disadvantage is sometimes the heavy traffic, but that comes with the growth factor. I have my back ways to get to where I’m going, but I have to even travel these only at certain times. Sometimes I wish I was back on my farm in North Louisiana, but then again, what would I do without my friends. I may stay at home a lot, but at least I’m close to what I want to do and who I want to see. There is a kind of peaceful existence in all this. I had a visit from Cass yesterday. He’s my friend who did so much wonderful work in the restoration of my home and who is about to do some work for Robert [continued on Expose-6]

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-3 and Brandon. Cass and I go back a long way. I call him my red-headed buddy, unlike my orange-headed buddy Trace. Cass and I have a lot of things in common, and I always enjoy his company. The same is true for Trace, who I haven’t seen since Mardi Gras and the Spanish Town Parade, but I did talk to him on the phone today. I also had a visit from Michael the other day. We exchange plants for our gardens and are in the same gardening group together. He may be a horticulture major, but he does a really fine job in managing the Rudolph’s Christmas complex on Highland Road. This is another place that you need to visit. There are lots of shops back in this area that you can’t see from the road. Turn in. Stay a while. Look around. You may be surprised at what you find here. For those of you who may want to dine on a different kind of breakfast, I think you need to try Superior Grill on Government Street on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It’s a great dining experience and one that you will want to experience again and again. You don’t think of breakfast food as being Mexican, but you will be pleasantly surprised at what you find on the menu here. Try it. I think you will appreciate the tip. Otherwise, I have to tell you that if you want to dine in the sky, try Tsunami. There is no better place to enjoy a meal at sunset looking out over the Mississippi River and the Atchafalaya area in the distance. That’s my favorite time to dine here although the food is great whenever you eat here. When the weather is warm, you can even sit outside, but being inside looking out over the river and the bridge and the river traffic

is very nice and relaxing. And those sunsets are beautiful, almost matching those looking out onto the Gulf of Mexico at Mallory Square in Key West. I love atmosphere. Great food makes it even better. To make things even better, sharing a meal with a friend or several friends is always a nice way to end any day. Doing this with those you respect and love to be around makes it even more worthwhile. The next time you look out over a sunset, just remember that there are others just like you experiencing this magnificent phenomenon. As Hemingway might say, the sun also rises, but I find those sunsets to signal the close of another beautiful day of new experiences and the acquiring of more wonderful memories. Enjoy your friends, and cherish your memories. They are great footprints on the pages of time. South Padre Island, Texas
