2008. LSGRA hopes your bar, business, and/or organization will participate in the race first and foremost by entering / sponsoring a team. The cost to enter – FREE! For this event, LSGRA is asking you to help support the organization as it helps support your business/organization during the race. Here is what is planned The race will begin in the French Quarter at Cafe Lafitte in Exile and end in the Marigny at Cowpokes. Each team will consist of four (4) people. Teams will need a 4 wheel “wagon” (built, borrowed, bought; cannot be motorized and must be small enough to be wheeled down the sidewalks of the Quarter). The decorated wagon will be pushed or pulled from bar to bar. One member of the team must start the race in “Cowgirl Drag” to consist of the following: Hat, wig, dress, hose, shoes, lipstick and some color on the eyes. This team member will begin the race riding in the wagon. Teams will be required to stop at each participating bar along the designated route. At each bar, team members will be required to do the following: (1) At least 3 members of each team must have/finish a shot or drink at the bar. Note that one member may elect to be the ‘designated team driver’ and therefore is exempt from consuming alcoholic beverages. (2) Each bar will have some “challenge” which requires the whole team to compete in. Keep in mind that the challenge is meant to hold a team in the bar for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Some challenges might be as follows: each member must roll a pair of “snake eyes”; win a game of Blackjack (get a 21); mini scavenger hunt; or some other fun thing

the bar comes up with. Once a team finishes their drinks and the challenge, the bar manager will present the team with a flag and then they are off to the next designated stop along the race. During the race, team members will sell raffle tickets. The grand prize of this raffle is a round trip ticket on Jet Blue Airlines good for travel in the continental U.S. Raffle tickets are available from participating teams. The drawing will be held on March 15th. once all teams have completed the race. The team selling the most raffle tickets will receive half of the raffle ticket sale proceeds! This could be BIG BUCKS for the team to use as they see fit – a charity / organization fund-raiser or split the money between the team members. The other half of the raffle ticket proceeds will be used by LSGRA towards the costs associated with hosting the IGRA Convention. The members of LSGRA believe this is a great event to increase awareness of and involvement in LSGRA, IGRA and the sport of gay rodeo by local residents, organizations and businesses. The Race Route starts at Lafitte's (Bourbon and Dumaine), goes up Dumaine to Rampart, up Rampart to St. Louis, St. Louis to Burgundy, Burgundy to St. Ann, St. Ann to Royal, Royal to Golden Lantern (1239 Royal). Teams will gather at Golden Lantern and then move as a group to the Marigny. Once in the Marigny, teams will proceed based on the order and time they arrived at the Golden Lantern. From Golden Lantern its up Barracks to Chartres, Chartres to Franklin, Franklin to Burgundy, Burgundy to Elysian Fields, Elysian Fields to North Rampart, North

pride corner/new orleans by Todd Blauvelt, pridefestneworleans@yahoo.com s you all know the New Orleans Gay community is inundated with celebrations and festivities throughout the year and all of our planning committees try to respect, honor and support each other. Well with that said, once again it is our turn. Gay Pride 2008 is scheduled to take place at Washington Square Park on June 28th and 29th this year and with the festival we are bringing back the Gay Pride Parade on the evening of the 29th. We have been hosting a few fundraising events and are planning to hold several more between now and the festival. Anyone interested in hosting an event for us should contact our fund-raising chair, Stephanie Lee Grathouse. Next up is our party called “Pride Purple” at JohnPaul’s on March 22. Our entertainment director, Rikki Redd, has been in contact with several top notch entertainers to fill our stages for our two day event. Our festival director, Ceasar Trafficante, has been coordinating all of the logistics of the festival and set up. Our Chair Dee Cooley has been leading the march for the parade. And our sponsorship chair Todd Blauvelt has been wooing local and national underwriters to help us in our cause. McDonald’s includes domestic partners in their employee benefits program and has sponsored a float in last year’s San Francisco Gay Pride. Randy Lee of the Great Southern Region of McDonald’s is leading their participation in the New Orleans Gay Pride festivities and looks forward to hosting a family friendly tent for children at this year’s festival. Karol Brandt of Harrah’s is heading up the drive to assist with the Gay Pride Parade and wants the community to know how open Harrah’s is with their gay friendly employment opportunities and wants people to know that Harrah’s is committed to supporting local events such as Jazz Fest, French Quarter Fest, and now the Gay Pride Festival. ulture is the bedrock of identity, and for us in the LGBT community is vital to remember our culture. Our culture is amongst the richest of any group in human society – it includes a strong spiritual element (the numerous gay and lesbian saints and religious leaders stretch back into the earliest Christian history) but also has its own language. Language? I hear you say.. surely not? Oh yes! LGBT people have their own ‘language’ - an entire dialect designed to be incomprehensible to outsiders, to protect themselves from scorn and persecution. This language flourished in England for over four hundred years, and has not entirely died out even today. It is called Parlary (or Palari – pronounced pa-la-ree). Just like proper English is known as the ‘Queen’s English’ broad Parlary was known as ‘Queen’s Parlary’ for an altogether different reason! So why is the Pink Pastor writing about a gay dialect from England? Well, first of all it is endlessly fascinating, and secondly, it shows continuity between our GLBT brothers and sisters centuries ago and today – just like we have an unbroken spiritual continuity that has ‘hard wired’ us into Christianity since the time of Christ. In spirituality as in other areas, we must not think we are clamoring for inclusion, we are claiming what is already ours - we have built the structure that is Christianity as much as anyone else, and we have contributed disproportionately to mainstream culture; we cannot beg admittance to something we have been in for centuries! I bring up Parlary especially because it shows how closely linked our ancestors were to every other group that inhabited society. Parlary is descended from ‘Lingua Franca’ a trading language used in time is Madam Adam Hawkins with a donation of $1,000. We have two Red level sponsors at $100 each, Glenn O’Berry and Ron Bimes. If any of you would like to join our Rainbow club we invite you to visit our website at www.nolapridefest.org. On the website you can also find information regarding donations, volunteer opportunities, booth rental applications, float rental for the parade and view photos of our events. This past weekend we hosted comedienne Grace Fraga at the Country Club. Grace is a former Big Easy Entertainment award recipient and intends to perform this year at Gay Pride Fest New Orleans. The festival and entertainment committees are still looking for artists interested in performing and you can contact those committees at festival@nolapridefest.org or entertainment@nolapridefest.org. We are all excited about the return of a two day festival and parade and look forward to seeing you all there. Start making plans now for the best festival in years.

medieval Europe, but contains elements of Romany (Gypsy), Italian, English, Yiddish and ‘backslang’ - the language of London’s criminal underworld in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is fertile and rich soil we are digging through here – acknowledging our cultural heritage can only make us stronger and help build pride in our community - all things essential for us to claim our rightful place in the 21st century. The title to this article – ‘Bona to Varda your dolly old eek’ is taken from a 1960’s British radio show called ‘Round the Horne’ where the two main characters where outrageous queens who spoke in Parlary, to the vast amusement of pretty much the whole country at the time. It means ‘nice to see your lovely old face’, as ‘varda’ is Parlary for ‘look’ or ‘see’ and ‘eek’ is Parlary for face. ‘Dolly’ is generally used to mean anything desirable or attractive, and ‘Bona’ means good. Here is a quick Parlary 101 incorporating a few common phrases from 19th century Parlary – ‘I have just been to the police station’ – ‘I’ve been up the charpering carsey’ ‘You have a very attractive figure – good legs’ – ‘Bona Lucoddy, just varda those thews!’ ‘It’s a raid! Let’s leave the bar quickly!’ – ‘Cop Bung!! Scarper the bungery!’ ‘God help that poor woman’ – ‘Devlesa preserve that poor polone’ ‘That man is gay’ – either a euphemism like ‘she don’t tell no lies!’ or a literal Parlary phrase like ‘That Omee is an Omipolone’. Confused? Good – that was the intention. By speaking Parlary LGBT people -especially gay men - could talk, confide, plot, do business and seek partners without anyone having a clue what they were saying. The full vocabulary is several thousand words and phrases, enough to completely mask any area of life in the pink haze of Parlary, and to save our ancestors from imprisonment and death. Let’s build sufficient pride in our past that we don’t have to beg for our future, we can claim it as ours by right. Glossary: Bona – good, admirable, from the Italian and Latin. Bungery – A public house - ‘pub’, often of a low nature. Bevvy – an alcoholic drink. Carsey – any place, often a building; in modern British slang it means a toilet (from ‘little house’) Charpering – seeking, looking hence charpering carsey for ‘Police station’ – a place where they investigate things. Devlesa – God, from the Romany (Gypsy). Eek or ecaf – face. Fakements – worldy goods and possession. Latty – home. Lucoddy – body. Naff – unpleasant, undesirable. [continued on Main-20]

Extended Family

F

or years I have been writing about the precious, my favorite person in my extended family, Dr. Amy, my God-child. You’ve visited with us through Dental School, Medical School and Residency, and the ups and downs of friends and lovers. Maybe it has been Amy’s exposure to “out” Aunt Toni for she has been a supportive part of the gay community since her teens. Recently after ten years of deep friendship, Amy married her best friend, former Investment Banker turned musician, song writer and Nashville personality, Bud. Her maid of honor was Gaynor, an out and proud Lesbian since high school who has been in a committed relationship for five years. During the wedding and reception at Woodland Plantation in West Pointe a la Hache, I was amazed at the number of their gay and lesbian extended family and the acceptance of their straight family and friends. This gathering of over 200 people from all walks of life, levels of education and social standing mixed lovingly, joyously and comfortably. My favorite of Amy’s friend is Dr. John who I met through the Mayor’s Advisory Committee when he was just starting Med School. Due to demands, John had to drop out of the Committee which was sad because he had many talents to share with the community. That was about ten years ago and I have tried to keep track of him during the passing time. Much to my shock, this handsome, tall, sweet man is single today. What a catch!! I have written about Gaynor many times. She and I took a month long trip to England and Italy what seems like another lifetime ago. Thanks to me she met her life mate, Ann, a woman I met in Portland who was going through a difficult time after a breakup with her then girlfriend. I also had the pleasure of traveling with Ann in the Canadian west.

Anyway back to Gaynor who looked lovelier than I’ve ever seen her in a deep blue halter top gown. My only shock was to see her salt and pepper hair which was once a beautiful brunette – a color that I loved. Her former partner – another Ann – was also there looking just fantastic in a tailored suit. It was great to see them all again after an absence of too many years. I finally got to meet the wonderful couple Shamus and Harry who live in the Marigny. We were once neighbors and didn’t even know it. Shamus is a delight and I was sorry that every time we got a chance to talk someone came along to steal one of us away from the other. Shamus is eclectic and there was nothing that I didn’t like about him especially the shy and quiet Harry who I’d love to get to know better. John Arthur, Amy’s friend and hairdresser from Charleston, made the trip along with several doctors from Charleston that work with Amy. I had met John Arthur on my first visit to Amy several years ago. He claims to be a homosexual but not gay. He’s a diva who claims to be Charleston society. Amy and I thought we might make a love connection with him and Dr. John but luckily for John that didn’t happen. Gay couples enjoying a straight wedding and being so comfortable that no one seemed to notice a difference, something conservative politicians seem to think is abnormal. There was also an elderly lesbian couple – perhaps in their 70s – who mixed with Amy’s parents, uncle, and cousins with ease. People are all the same basically regardless of the hate spread by religious hypocrites in fearful ignorance. I believe in the six degrees of separation, and concede that we are all related if for no other reason than we are all created by the one God, no matter what you call her. If all religious people thought the way of peace and love and harmony, there would be no difference made over sexual-

ity. I told the Episcopal priest who married Amy and Bud that I once attended St. Anna’s Episcopal Church on Esplanade Avenue but was now a member of the Church of Christ the Liberator. He was very aware of who we are and why. He seemed pleased to be able to speak with someone from this church and share ideas about belief and acceptance. That was a great comfort to me. I’ve seen great growth in religion in my life, and am saddened that the extremes – Roman Catholicism, Baptist-Pentecostal – cannot adjust their narrow thinking to practice the word of God. But that is a subject for another article and one that I have written about before – enough said. The wedding was beautiful, Amy was beautiful, the plantation was beautiful and even the weather was beautiful. It had rained for days before the wedding and we prayed for sun to dry the ground for the outdoor ceremony. The sun did indeed comply and the gardens were beautiful too. As planned, the wedding took place perfectly except Gaynor’s heals were sinking into the softer grassy patches coming down the aisle. She is just too accustomed to wearing Birkenstocks. Woodland Plantation just a few years ago was devastated by time and Katrina. The forward thinking speculators purchased the plantation and rebuilt/remodeled this Louisiana treasure. A veranda runs the length of both the front and back of the structure, and was the meeting spot for all the guests staying on site especially us smokers. It was the place we all gathered on Sunday morning to eat leftover wedding cake before Amy opened gifts. In addition to the house, another structure was moved to the location. It was once a chapel and is now the reception hall, dining area and bar. I understand that the historical departments of the state and parish that governs the remodeling of such sites did not want to allow the Chapel building to be placed on the grounds. The clever entrepreneurs said, OK, we will just destroy the Chapel building. That got lots of attention and also permission to keep the structure in tact at the site. Bravo, free thinkers. The reception was held inside the Chapel building and flowed onto the large covered patio adjacent to it. The band was great. The dancing was lively and lasted into the evening but I think that was due to the open bar. The best entertainment was after the band left and the Nashville guests gathered to jam. We heard several of Bud’s songs and one written with Mark Stephen Jones who has a great reputation as a song writer. Bud and Mark were having a song recorded by Hank Williams, Jr. the week after the wedding – this perfect timing was quite a gift. My knee had not healed enough to dance but I certainly enjoy every aspect of the three day event. The exceptionally happy couple planned to honeymoon in New Orleans and Jamaica before returning to Charleston. I am really thankful for my extended family and proud that I can be a close part of their lives. It is important for members of the GLBT community to educate by example, and that is what I have tried to do with everyone I meet. It has served me well and hopefully I’ve changed some hearts along the way as my extended family has richly changed mine. Postscript: I have just learned of the passing of Alfred Doolittle, the long time

one last song ...from Main-20 able to attend, I simply say that I would love to but I had other plans for that day. Well this happened to me on the weekend of February 22nd. It all started when I received an invitation in the mail. It read: Sharing our love, life and laughter. Celebrating 25 wonderful years. Randy Patterson and Andy Denmark invite you to share in the joy of their Holy Union Saturday, the 23 of February, 2008 at two o’clock in the afternoon. King of Peach Metropolitan Community Church, St. Petersburg, Florida. A reception will follow in the church social hall. Well you could have bowled me over. Randy as many of you may or not know is the notorious Phyllis Denmark, formerly of our fair city and my own revue, Divas “R” Us, which had played for much to long a time at the former Golden Lantern Bar on Royal Street, now known as Tubby’s Golden Lantern. Where I might add, at this point, that despite the untrue rumors I am still working. Though my hours have changed, at my request, I am now working Monday and Tuesday from one in the afternoon to nine at night, and then on Wednesday’s from eight in the morning till one at the afternoon. Yes, we are now opening at one in the morning at the request of the many coffee clutch patrons, so don’t forget to stop in and see us and that is seven days a week. With Lance on Tuesday morning and Tommy the other five mornings. Anyway now back to the wedding. Well if Phyllis finally convinced dear Andy to tie the knot after all these years, you know I was just going to have to attend in person just to find out the whole scoop of what she was holding over his head, or where she got the gun to hold in his back. Or perhaps, and this may just be the real reason that I just had to be there, was there some new sexual position or technique she had learned in the lust filled tropics of South Florida. Well if that was it, I was determined to find out by being there. And so began my conniving to get there as fast and cheap as possible. Well hello Jet Blue, my way to go anywhere, after getting a friend of a friend of a friend’s help I managed to get a buddy pass for less than eighty dollars. I was on my way. With just a little more than an one hour layover at JFK airport in New York on Friday morning I would be in Tampa by one in the afternoon. Andy had a wonderful room set up for me at a close by hotel. Phyllis’ two sisters were driving in to be there for them and were staying at their home. We would all go out to dinner that evening, after which I would just possibly go out for a little carousing, my nature being what it is. The next day I would help my dear sister prepare some of the food for that reception that afternoon, then the ceremony, and the next afternoon I would be headed home again to be back at work the following Monday afternoon. A great two day trip, at a minimal amount of cash and I would be there for this historic event. That Friday morning, I arrived at the airport via Chuck and his trustee White Cab, at 5:30am, plenty of time to check in. Check in was a breeze, thanks to Jeff who assured me there would be no trouble with stand by flights on either trip. I was off and on my way. Now getting into the concourse through security is a bit difficult with my missing half of left foot. It is just hard to get in and out of my specially made

shoes. They are a bitch to get on and even worse to get back on, what takes a normal person but a second or two takes me about ten to fifteen minutes, you should see airport security checking me out during this process. I truly feel as if I am under a spotlight performing onstage again. Well that over I made my way to the proper embarking area, spread my carry on things over two seats and began to do the morning puzzle in the Times-Picayune. Well I must have been heavy into the paper, because I really didn’t hear the message come over the loud speaker about my flight to New York, but I kind of got the message that something was wrong when all the other passengers picked up their collective things and headed out of the area towards the Jet Blue check in station. Let them go I thought to myself, I’ll just wait until after the crowd got settled and sign on the next flight. So I sat and finished my puzzle, then went back out into the Airport lobby. There was still a long line at the Jet Blue counter so I was hungry and got a small breakfast. After I finished eating I came out and there

were just two people waiting to be served at the airline counter, so I got into the line. Jeff was busy when it was my turn and so I asked a very polite young lady if I could get a seat on the next flight out today, at which time she smiled at me and gave me a slight wink. Surely this woman couldn’t have been flirting with an old fruit like me. She wasn’t. She laughed, I’m sure you heard that all flights to New York have been cancelled. I laughed, “Just kidding. How about tomorrow.” You’ll have to call this evening she replied politely. I headed to the exit; stopping only to call my sister to come pick me up, which she did two hours later, please don’t ask. When I got home there was a message telling me that my Jet Blue flight to Tampa had been cancelled. No crap, I never made it into New York, that flight had been cancelled also. That evening with firm resolve, you know I do not give up easily. I made the call to re-reserve the next morning, my idea is a simple one if I do get there at 1pm, Saturday I can cab it directly to the church for the 2pm nuptials and then stay for they reception, which I’m sure you all know is

the best part anyway. Well here I go again; they had no available flights until the next Monday morning. Well that certainly would do me no good unless; I called Phyllis immediately and explained my problem. Honey, I said to her, I won’t be able to come in for your wedding, but I can get there in time for the honeymoon, how about that? This was met by total silence, not a word came from the phone until I heard a voice say to me. "If you’d like to make a call hang up." I’m sorry Randy I really did try. I know I should have been there but alas I’m still here. few quick notes on the Marigny Theatre and To Do Productions this season. ell this is in reality the Easter issue, and I know that I covered that in the last issue skipping Saint Patrick’s Day completely. But I’ve covered Corned Beef and Cabbage variations till I’m blue in the face. So here is another great Easter dinner if you invite six to eight friends over and really want to go over budget, it doesn’t have to

be a holiday but if you're feeling flush, serve this menu.

Gradually add beef broth and next three ingredients. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer uncovered, fifteen minutes. Place 8 oven proof serving bowls on a baking sheet. Place one bread slice in each bowl; ladle soup over bread. Top each with a cheese slice; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Broil 5½ inches from the heat until cheese melts. Yield eight servings.

LEMON SORBET 3 cups boiling water 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind ½ cup lemon juice Combine boiling water and sugar in a large bowl, stirring until sugar dissolves; let cool. So things should be bigger and better than ever this year. I just want to say that I was indeed privileged to be invited to their annual Drag Extravaganza fund-raising show at Cowpokes on March 1st. It had a wonderful talented array of talent, both genders, some new, some old. Marsha, girl I just want to say that was another side of you I certainly have never seen before. Rock on sister, I expect to see much more of you in the future, now that I have to really cut back. Well so long for now kids, see you next time around. Marigny Perks Fuels You Up

Q

uaint Marigny Perks, 2401 Burgundy, near Cowpokes, JohnPaul's and Phoenix, gives you that feel of a Paris patisserie with both sidewalk and indoor seating for gourmet coffee, pastries, breakfast or lunch. We popped in for lunch, which turned out to be quite a surprise. We've had Danish, croissants and some of Billy's Bites' famous muffins and red velvet cup cakes on previous visits, and of course, the fab coffee, all quite good. So we were not sure how lunch would rate in this coffee house. Well, my dears, you are in for

a treat if you make a lunch date. We decided on gumbo, artichoke soup, Survivor sandwich and vegetarian quiche to get a sampling of the offerings here. Be warned, both the gumbo and the soup are served one size, a large bowl. While the seafood gumbo (4.50), loaded with shrimp was very good, the artichoke soup (3.75) stole the show in a rich and thick cream broth, very much like an Alfredo bisque, but with tender sliced artichokes laced throughout. The Survivor sandwich (6.75) was an excellent choice with seeded wheat stuffed with lean, deli sliced turkey and American cheese along with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato and a bag of Lays potato chips. You can also choose Swiss cheese and sourdough or croissant on this sandwich selection.

Seafood Gumbo

Spinach & Mushroom Quiche

Survivor Sandwich

The quiche du jour (4.50) was a delicious spinach and mushroom one with cheddar baked to a golden brown. One hint when having lunch, either split a bowl of gumbo or soup, and then have a sandwich and quiche or vice versus. The portions for the price are unbelievable. Bold as Brass

R

onnie is one of the most interesting individuals I know, and he is really a super-nice guy. I had a couple of beers with him last week when I was feeling the urge for a cold one or two. He thought I was delivering Ambush, but I had done that the day before, but this youngster came running out to my car in anticipation of helping me. I ended up talking with him for quite some time. I made it a point to come just as he opened shop because you can’t really talk openly when all the customers start coming in. I inquired about his love live, his goals in life, and his current activities. This opened up a doorway to lots of information, some for publication, some totally between us – and I like that kind of openness from a friend. Ronnie and I have known each other for a number of years, and it’s always been a mutual admiration of interests between us. He has his life. I have mine. And they don’t cross or intertwine in any way. That is what makes the relationship interesting. The only way I can learn about his life is to just point blank ask him, and he usually opens up, almost as if he needs to get something off his chest, so to speak. After our conversation last Wednesday, I came away knowing a lot about him that I didn’t know before. Sometimes you have to show an interest in someone and be willing to listen in order to learn. I am pleased to know of his goals, and I’m wishing him the very best. I happen to know that he will meet them and come away making a lot of people very proud of him. I only have one complaint about him. He slept in the same bed with my gorgeous and wonderful Lance, and I’m so jealous. And they didn’t do anything! What! Are you out of your mind? I wouldn’t have been able to get a single bit of sleep, much like when Mark and I were on the road with the leather contests. However, like Ronnie, I was happy just watching him snore closeup and know that his warmth was next to me. Well, Ronnie that is okay. You certainly showed a lot of composure there. It’s a trait that few have, and you are definitely one of those special individuals who treasure a friendship more than a fleeting moment of passion. At any rate, keep up your special individuality. Let everyone know that you have a special quality that is difficult to acquire. It’s called class – and you have to earn it. You have that special class, and you stand tall among the masses.

Nice as Silver

E

veryone has close friends. That doesn’t include all the acquaintance you make along the way. There is a difference between acquaintances and friendships. If you don’t know the difference, you are in a state of denial. For me, I have many friends, some closer than others. These close friends are those that I can share a part of my life with that isn’t known or judged by the outside world. It’s a closed circle, so to

speak. One such friend who could easily fall into the silver category is Sam. I don’t even recall the first time I met him, but, to me, he’s family. His family is my family. His friends are my friends. There is a closeness here that commands a kind of trust that you would never willingly give to others. Maybe that’s why we enjoy trips together, dining together, going to Mardi Gras balls together, or just walking the streets of the French Quarter enjoying a time of leisure, maybe together, sometimes having other friends with us. We have our favorite restaurants and shopping areas, and we know our limits when it comes to schedules. That is true whether it is in the local areas or on extended trips like Cancun or in Miami. He knows my faults. I know his faults. That is an understanding between friends. Right now, we have another trip planned. Of course, Sam just returned recently from a European tour which didn’t appeal to me, but he went with someone who was interested in that part of the world, and, for Sam, it was one that will stay with him forever. It was with our friend Leonard. I’m more of the Key West, Las Vegas, or San Francisco persuasion, and if this doesn’t appeal to my friends, then I go it alone. After all, in Las Vegas, I have so many friends that I don’t even have to check into a hotel. They would be offended if I even thought about doing this. That’s why I could return again and again. With Miami, it’s different. I have to depend on Sam for the connection there. All in all, it balances out, and then if the spirit moves me or us, the location could be Chicago or Boston or San Diego. With my dear buddy Kevin, we are happy just driving over to San Antonio or flying out to Santa Fe. He has a companion who allows our friendship to continue because he understands that this is exactly what the relationship is – a friendship and a close one. If time permits, he knows he can join us. That is what trust can do for relationships. Of course, most of my friends know that I’m too much of a loner to hook up with anyone anyway. Just ask John or Mark over in the Bywater if you don’t believe me. I might be alone most of the time, but I’m never lonely. I have friends to fill any void in my life. I guess all of these people could be placed in the silver category because they can be polished and aloof, or they can just remain relaxed away from the crowds, or open and friendly within crowds. It’s just something that many people don’t understand. Silver has nothing to do with age or the color of one’s hair. It is the way that individuals have polished their lives and put that technique out for all to see. I only mention Sam prominently here, but there are so many others. Who is in your silver lining?

Classy as Diamonds

D

iamonds are a girl’s best friend, but they are also expensive pieces of jewelry. It is much better to be a diamond in the rough

but polished by a technique that only you alone can obtain. Take Gerry, for instance. I don’t know of a single individual that I respect more than I do this man. He is thoughtful and loyal, and he puts family first. Loved ones are the basis of his inner strength, and he shows this in everything he does. Gerry is my dinner buddy, my computer buddy, and my special friend. I enjoy his company, and he must enjoy mine or he wouldn’t continue to dine with me. We have our favorite restaurants, and this is where we look out for ourselves and shape our plans to conquer the world. It is a meeting of the minds, and it is a good thing. This is someone else that I have enjoyed a relationship with for many years, and it is built on trust and respect that is so important for any individual or individuals in a continuing friendship. Of course, we have a lot in common too, even down to our choices of wine and restaurants. It’s a closeness difficult to explain, but one that is built on a strong foundation of admiration. I don’t know how else to explain it except to say that I enjoy his company, and I always look forward to being with him. I know it’s mutual. Tommy is another friend who I totally enjoy being around. In fact, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and this is an Acadiana stud that I have to at least see and be with once a year, sometimes more. Even though the distance between us is great, it is only in miles, not in the matters of the heart. He’s always there, always will be. We aren’t lovers. We are friends, but I miss not being with him more often, and

whenever we are together, it is like two kids loose in a candy store. We go hiking, hitting historic places, checking out plants, hitting the bars, watching TV, and all those other things that most people might find boring. All I can say is that I am so fortunate to have had him come into my life. (Note: Tommy is written up in the latest issue of “The Advocate.”) My little buddy John is also a part of my life that I now have to share with his companion for life, Phil. That’s the way it should be. I settle for occasional visits from both of them or just dining out with them every couple of weeks or so. It is just wonderful to know that someone you care so much about has found someone to spend the rest of his life with. Not many people have this to look forward to. Some look and never find. It’s sad to think of someone like this. It’s as if they are looking but can never find that one person to fill the needs of the heart. For John, I think the foundation has begun, and it looks to be a strong one. I couldn’t be happier. I couldn’t be happier for Crawford and his significant other too. They just celebrated their second anniversary at Jubans, and he seems to have found his permanent partner for life. If you should go to dinner at Fleming’s, be sure to request him as your waiter. He would appreciate it, and you will be treated graciously and expertly in every way. He is really a nice human being. (Now, if I could only get better acquainted with that straight stud Mitch that he works with, I would be one happy man. My goodness! I need to take [continued on Expose-5]

n just under two weeks, Lent will be over, which means things will be wilder than ever here in Acadiana. And with Easter comes Spring Break, that last big break for college students before final exams begin. Altogether, I say we have some pretty wild parties on the horizon. The Sound Factory and Back Side have gone out of their way to make sure the post-Mardi Gras lull has been as festive as possible. Now that Easter is quickly approaching, the nightlife in Downtown Lafayette is already starting to look up. Just last Wednesday night, I was out and saw more people partying than I have since Fat Tuesday, and that’s an impressive feat for the middle of the week. So much so, that I can only imagine what things will be like for Spring Break. Until Easter, come by and check out their weekly lineup. There’s none better in town. The Sound Factory and Back Side are open seven days a week to make sure you never have to go elsewhere for your fun and entertainment. Their unique atmosphere and friendly staff make it a tradition in the Downtown. Whether you hit the street on a Tuesday night or a Saturday, they always something going on. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad

Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. He doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. And the rest of the week at Sound Factory and Back Side is just as entertaining. Between karaoke on Tuesday nights and Show Night on Sundays, they pack each night with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are fabulous drink specials and the unforgettable dance music spun by DJ Huggies. And unlike many other dance clubs, Sound Factory has a quieter more relaxed side, the Back Side, where you can take a break from the loud music and socialize with your friends, or make some new ones. It’s two bars for the price of one, and it’s right in the heart of Downtown Lafayette. It’s no wonder so many people travel from all over to come out in Lafayette. It offers a unique culture and an unbeatable nightlife. The countdown is on to Spring Break. And while I know a lot of you are planning road trips, with gas prices the way they are, it might be more economically feasible to stick closer to home. Luckily we have the Sound Factory and Back Side to make sure you don’t have to go far to have a great time.

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-4 a brief break.)

Good as Gold

I

t is always a tragedy for a close friend to pass away, and I suppose as you grow older you become more aware of this. Recently, several people have passed on, but the memories of the good times linger on in our memories. One such memory is of Don Curtis, a church-going and extremely nice human being. How do I know him? Well, I accompanied him to many of the bal masques in New Orleans along with Gene Normand and Sam Favaro. We were a foursome when it came to balls in the Crescent City. It was usually Don who drove and Gene who talked constantly all the way to and from the Chalmette complex where most of the balls were held. With Sam and myself in the backseat, we knew that Don couldn’t possibly go to sleep at the wheel with all the chatter coming from Gene, who, bless his heart, would read every sign along the highway – out loud – like we all needed to know this great event or location. I never thought I would miss that - but I do. When Gene passed away, it ended our trips, leaving usually me and Sam to suffer through each others conversations and laughter and recollections. We lost Leonard too, who was also a long-time companion at many of these events, but the loss of Don left two of us standing and wondering what the hell was going to happen next. That is one of the dangers of

age, but it doesn’t mean it is always just the age factor. Youth is fleeting, and I like to tell all my friends – and my readers too – to just enjoy life. It is fleeting and passes so quickly. With Don’s death, it marked the closing chapter of another life, much like Rocky a couple of weeks ago in New Orleans, who many of you also knew well and who was a founding member of the Crescent City Outlaws. I knew Rocky as more of an acquaintance than a friend, but I still felt a loss with his passing. What I’m trying to convey here is that life is so precious, and so many people never think twice about their actions. What has happened here is not reserved for those in the autumn years of their life or at any age for that matter. As with most anything today, it is with the youth and those community leaders who meet every day that we see expectations of long and prosperous years of comfort and companionships. Endings will be there, but we always hope for the best. Life is more precious than gold. Life leads to the foundation of golden memories. However, when someone leaves, there is a void that is difficult to fill. Take care of yourselves. Live life to the fullest, but recognize the pitfalls that may be ahead. Do your best to leave a legacy of many friendships along the way. Like Don and Rocky, make sure you have added many hours of pleasure to your friendships. That is why memories mean so much. Make sure they are good ones so that you can leave a legacy of good relationships [continued on Expose-8]

Sparkling as a Sapphire

O

n a lighter note here, let me get back to that wonderful and youthful stud that is loved Thea Austin sings to the girls

by so many. A while back, you may recall that this stud, namely Lance, was named Mr. Butt Beautiful of 2007. Well, he still fits this description – always will – but we have to move on, and in 2008, there is someone else who needs to carry this excellent title. Research has lead a team of individuals to explore the community not only here in Red Stick but also in Lafayette and New Orleans. From the list of candidates, it was narrowed down to less than a half dozen individuals, and finally a winner was chosen. Mr. Butt Beautiful 2008 is none other than the gorgeous and studly king of the Lafayette night scene, Macky, who just happens to be one of the nicest guys around. As soon as I can, I’ll get back over to Lafayette and do a complete interview with him and let you know all about him. If you wonder why this choice was made, just think back to this year’s Royal Order of Unicorn bal masque production. Who could forget the bulging red briefs that fit so beautifully around those bulging family jewels and fantastic derriere. Congratulations, Macky, on being named Mr. Butt Beautiful 2008. Now this youthful stud is definitely a great example of a sparkling sapphire, and, as most of you know I love anything that is blue and sparkles, so you know where my vote was cast. Next time, I’ll tell you all about a new category of male excellence as I announce Mr. Dreamboat 2008. Looking over all the candidates for this title has just really got me excited, so excited that I have to take a break and “relax.” And with this said, I will bid you all adieu until next time.
