The great gay cities of the world do, and this puts us in the league with New York, San Francisco, London and Amsterdam.”

roject Lazarus, the residential facility for people living with HIV and AIDS, has named community and business leaders Vicky Bayley and Jim Lestelle as winners of the organization’s 2008 Guardian Angel Award. “The Guardian Angel is the highest honor that Project Lazarus bestows on individuals and organizations who selflessly give of their time, talents, financial resources and leadership abilities on behalf of those in the HIV and AIDS community who need our support most,” said Eric Oleson, executive director of Project Lazarus. “Each has demonstrated compassion and generosity that cannot be fully acknowledged. We invite others in the New Orleans area to follow in their footsteps of public service.” Bayley is president of VB Limited, a consulting business specializing in the opening of new restaurants. She formerly operated several restaurants of her own, including Ohia at Hotel Le Cirque, 7 on Fulton in the Wyndham Riverfront New Orleans Hotel, Artesia in Abita Springs and Mike’s on the Avenue in the central business district. Bayley first became associated with Project Lazarus in the mid-1990s and since that time has donated catering, staffing and funding for many of the organization’s fund-raising initiatives, such as Art Against AIDS and the Guardian Angel Award gala. She also led her restaurants’ participation in the annual Dining for Life fund-raiser. New Orleans – do you know what it means?

T

here are many things I love but up near the top of the list is the city I grew up in, ran away from, and crawled back to – New Orleans. We handle celebrations very differently here than I have experienced anywhere else. One of these special events is the death of a loved one, and that became clear to me as we celebrated the life of Alfred Doolittle. Friends and family didn’t hide themselves in black. We didn’t mourn. We rejoiced Alfred’s new life with God and talked about the angels that came to carry him away. The day began at the Garden of Memories for 10am where we had a brief interment. We praised his life at an 11am High Mass at St. Anna’s Episcopal Church. A huge and delicious luncheon was served in the church’s reception hall. After which, we all gathered at the Fairy Playhouse to place a lock of Alfred’s hair in the Memorial Garden while friends distributed white rose petals in the garden and spoke of the individual memory that each of us holds dear about our friendship with Alfred. After five hours, I took my leave but left a little piece of my heart there for both Alfred and Stewart Butler, his loving, life partner of 35 years. Special events continue to come to us here in this old city of traditions. I took part in celebrating St. Joseph’s and St. Patrick’s Days. It occurred to me as Julie Thompson and I walked into Holy Rosary Church on Esplanade Avenue that in all the places I have lived that have large Italian populations only in New Orleans do we honor St. Joseph with a church service, an altar of gifts of food and a celebration of eating, drinking and dancing on Church property. Since St. Joseph’s Day fell during Holy Week this year, the “Church” decided to celebrate the Saturday before the traditional date of March 19th. Believers came together to witness the blessing of the altar and share in the gifts. Real Italian homemade fig cookies, the likes of which I have not tasted since young adulthood, were plentiful along with delicious Italian style bread like I used to enjoy while living in New York and New Jersey. Many of the musicians that played this day looked to be older than rock but their spirit was full, and their sound rich with traditional enthusiasm. After eating our fill and people watching with great amusement, we danced and sang our way out into the parking lot to the tune of “It’s A Grand Old Flag.” Italian-Americans are very patriotic; a result of guilt from WWII perhaps or bringing the Mafia when fleeing Sicily. There must have been many dozens of Tony’s, Joseph’s and Mary’s in the crowd so that every time I heard my name and turned to see who was speaking to me, there was a stranger speaking to someone else. It was very confusing but funny. The Irish-Americans had a parade in Metairie the Sunday before March 17th. A

day I usually hide inside because the parade passes one block from my house making it impossible to get in or out from 11am until almost 4pm. The parade fell on Palm Sunday this year so I braved the nut cases that park on my lawn and make my street a one lane bottleneck. John Demurs picked me up – many thanks. The thing I love about the Irish is that they throw cabbages, carrots and potatoes. This went well with the fig cookies and bread I had gotten the day before. As the parade made its way through Metairie and Fr. Michael was finishing Mass at Church of Christ the Liberator, John, Joe and I started on another adventure – Voodoo, football that is. Going to a Voodoo game is a hoot. The small arena makes participation much more enjoyable and intimate. It is really easy to watch and get invested in the play. We – Voodoo – won by four touchdowns. And there were plenty touchdowns on both sides. The field is half the length of regulation football fields and there are no sidelines to speak of. There are a few rules that differ but it is easy to follow and a nice way to enjoy a bit of football until the Saints come marching in this August without spending a month’s rent for a ticket. Seats in section 300 are less than $10 and the view is good. Only in New Orleans can you attend four events in a weekend and meet your new best friends at every one. This is truly a city filled with pride and love. And yet, we have a crime rate that would disavow that fact.

Enemies

T

he enemies of law and order are numerous. But what is touching me this day is the enemies of relationships in our community. It is not bad enough that we have to face national and state laws that pull us apart. We seem to think that pulling each other apart is okay too. Recently, I have been in touch with two couples – one gay men, the other lesbians – who have been in relationships for eight to eighteen months. When they are together, they seem like lovers but separately they sound like enemies. The sad part is that they involve innocent people like me in their craziness. To hear either side of both arguments, no one is willing to accept their half of the blame for their problems and the other guy is always wrong. If you start out liking someone and come to love them, why would you see only their faults when things do not seem to be going your way? Love means never doing anything that would require you to say, “I’m sorry.” If the other guy had children before you got involved, they aren’t going to disappear. And disapproving parents are not going to change over night so expect there to be some difficult times especially during holidays and family events. You should never ask a partner to [continued on Main-12]

A Tale of Two Cities

L

ast week I was in London. London was the city I spent most of my adult life in, and a city I have always loved – it is huge, busy, exciting and full of interest, but either I am getting

sappho psalm ...from Main-8 make a choice between you and their family. That is not love; it is childish immaturity. I am getting weary of the complaints. I am even thinking of screening my phone calls so I don’t upset myself with someone else’s drama. What’s a friend to do? I recommended a good therapist. I also listened for weeks, maybe months, and in the case of one couple, I just don’t respect them anymore and want to distance myself from them. This makes me feel really bad. I am also hearing from others that many people feel as I do. We are getting sick of on again, off again relationships. My plan is to pray for them and walk away for my own peace of mind. Love is a very special and beautiful gift. It must be pampered and respected. Love does not threaten or find fault. Love is our strength and also our kindness. If you love someone, tell them today and show them all the days you have together.

old or it is getting even faster, but I found the whole trip an enormous trial!! There are about fifteen million people in the London metro area – most of them squeezed into central London – and they all seem to have one thing on their minds: money. London has always been about money, but previously they had God as well as money, now they just have money. The teeming millions that struggle into London each day on the congested roads, or the crowded tube trains will tell you they are doing it ‘to make ends meet’ but if you look at life-style statistics then a great number of them are selling their souls for a second home, a third car, or a third foreign vacation a year. It was a breath of fresh air to get back to New Orleans and breathe; yes, London is rich and successful, but the price it has paid is tremendous. When I preach about money and materialism it is so easy to be a hypocrite – who doesn’t like nice things and being financially comfortable? the difference is that if you take your spiritual life seriously then all that hard cash should at most be gravy; the meat is God – if you don’t have the spiritual life then the gravy is all you have and it is not enough! I have heard outsiders to New Orleans comment on why it is ‘third world’, an overemphasis on life-style above mak-

ing money – but they miss the point. Life-style and the ‘leisure’ activities that are so important in NOLA give life color, and the rich spirituality that New Orleans has spawned show that this approach is a better long term investment than hoarding dollars in the bank, they make the bed you die in more comfortable, but once that last breath is taken they become worthless. Building a life worth living leads to a death rich in significance, and a new view of life, presenting the possibility of a life that never ends. New Orleans has an appealing way of underestimating its importance and impact upon the world, back in the United Kingdom, Louisiana, and New Orleans especially, has an almost mythic significance, partly I suppose because Brits love Jazz and all associated with it, but also because New Orleans is something genuinely different, unique. I grew up with Mahalia Jackson and Louis Armstrong, but also went to school reading Anne Rice and Tennessee Williams. The city is a state of mind as well as bricks and mortar – and that is true of very few earthly places. As I write this we are in Holy Week – just approaching Easter, and the idea that a place can be a state of mind is vital to the

whole Easter thing – Calvary is not just a place where people were killed, it is a spiritual reality and a ‘state of mind’. The cross does not just represent a form of execution, it represents the ‘dark night of the soul’, but it also represents victory, light, freedom, it is at the center of the paradoxes that make up the core of Christianity. Weakness becomes strength, death becomes life, darkness becomes light – a man born in poverty that dies in the most shameful way possible is the King of Kings; appearances are not trustworthy. London, with all its grandeur and wealth may turn out to have made the poor investment, whilst dear old New Orleans with its apparent weaknesses and it’s fixation with ‘life-style’ may have made the better choice. Our choice is between a glorious bed to die in, or a glorious life after death – not as cheap reward for going to church, but as the obvious consequence of building a relationship with the one that is eternal and with whom eternity is spent. Shakespeare said “All that glisters is not gold; gilded tombs do worms enfold”. Rev. Clinton Crawshaw is the Pastor of The Big Easy Metropolitan Community Church in New Orleans. Gem of the Ocean at Dillard University

A

lthough Gem of the Ocean was the penultimately pro duced play in August Wilson’s cycle of works chronicling the AfricanAmerican experience in the twentieth century, Gem stands first chronologically taking place in 1904, a time when former slaves still lived, yet younger blacks were feeling cut off from their history. In Gem, Citizen Barlow, a young man recently arrived in Pittsburgh from the South, turns up at the home of Aunt Ester whom he hopes can “wash his soul.” As in a Greek drama, one relatively small action sets in motion a series of events

that ends in large scale tragedy, while thematically Gem is related to some of Ibsen’s plays dealing with the expiation of one’s sins. A lot happens in this Tonynominated script and Wilson has written some extraordinary scenes, but it doesn’t have the muscularity of his Fences nor the haunting quality of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Dillard’s recent production, though not perfect, went a long way in overcoming some of the script’s inherent challenges. For example, in a play in which the characters threaten to become mere symbolic archetypes, Dillard’s cast always presented them as fully fleshed out living beings despite some of the repetitively talky stretches.

If Raymond Vrazel, Jr.’s direction was somewhat static (at times, it seemed as though the young actors were just wandering around the set for lack of anything better to do), he delivered a vibrant emotionalism in the play’s big scenes particularly in the metaphysical journey to the City of Bones; though comparisons are odious, Dillard’s version of this scene was even more compelling than in the Anthony Bean Community Theater’s generally fine production last year. As Aunt Ester, the slyly wise matriarch at the center of the play, Brittney James was believably authoritative, her expressive face conveying unspoken feelings. Though a somewhat more serious Aunt Ester than ABCT’s Adella Gautier, Ambie Award-winner James’ interpretation was just as valid. Even if he didn’t capture his character’s age, Lawrence J. Weber, Jr. gave a worthy, intelligent performance as Solly Two Kings, a feisty seller of pure (i.e., dog doo manure) and a former conductor on the Underground Railroad. Christopher Robinson was good, if also a bit too youth-

ful as Eli, Ester’s aide de camp, while Avon Manning was very good as Rutherford Selig, a sympathetic traveling salesman. Canae White was good in those parts where as Black Mary, the heir to Ester’s legacy, she was called upon to do something but she was unable to make her passages of exposition sound natural. Sharrieff Banks as Mary’s policeman brother Caesar, an enforcer of the white establishment’s rules, was simply flat in his delivery and characterization. The find of the production, however, was Rodney Graham who, as Citizen Barlow, embodied that character’s innocence, determination and gullibility, making clear Ester’s admonition to him, “You’re on an adventure. You signed up for it and you didn’t even know it.” I look forward to seeing him in future productions. James Jennings’ evocative scenery was good as was Terrance Holloway’s lighting; I especially liked its expressionistic quality for the journey to the City of Bones section. Christopher Wright’s sound design was inventive and memorable.

Loretta Lynn at IP Casino Resort

L

oretta Lynn returned to the Gulf Coast for the first time since Katrina and if she packed the force of a hurricane, hers was the most benign and wonderful of storms. I last saw her in 2004 when imminent foot surgery forced her to sit for much of the concert and, though she gave a wonderful performance, she clearly was in pain. Three years later, at age 73, she was completely mobile again, at times sashaying around the stage like a schoolgirl while looking resplendent in a shimmery, bejeweled sky blue gown. When she flashed her million watt smile, the entire auditorium lit up. As for her voice, if it sounded a teensy bit husky during her first few songs, she soon warmed up and sounded exactly as she did 40 years ago when she was in the midst of her series of countless Top Ten hits. Listening to her today, her perfect diction allows you to understand every word she sings and she amazes by making her classics sound as fresh as they did in the 1960s and ’70s. Lynn’s voice continues to have a timbre as unique as Pavarotti’s and, like the greatest opera singers, the command she has over her sound production coupled with a powerhouse diaphragm allows her to make her artistry look effortless while others have to strain for the same effect. Simply singing a capella, as she did for the gospel number My Savior God To Thee, she sounded heavenly. Throughout the concert at the IP Casino Resort’s newly renovated and beautifully intimate theater, Lynn engaged in patented repartee with her son Ray and daughter Peggy Jean about other family members including her late husband Doo and his girlfriend or as Lynn put it, “his whore.” When Ray made some mildly homophobic comments about Lynn’s dress designer, Momma Loretta quickly and commendably put him in his place. Unlike so many other singers who just wail out a song, Lynn’s communicative power lies in her being a great storyteller, both as a performer and writer. And if her writing has sometimes been over[continued on Main-20]

et’s see, New Year's, Mardi Gras and now even Easter has hopped on by on the calendar. Where is time going this year anyway? Let me tell you, Mardi Gras 2008 was like no other ever for me. I congratulate all the krewes on the hard work everyone put in this year. It is always a challenge to put on a bal masque, with the exceptionally short season this year it seemed almost impossible. They all did it though, and did a great job, too. I also find it necessary to thank my Brothers in the Lords of Leather. It was the greatest honor to be crowned Lord Consort XXV this year but to share Royalty honors with my husband Michael, Lord King XXV, was simply amazing! As most of you know, it is very rare for a couple to be crowned royalty together and for this, I know I speak for both of us, we are honored and privileged. I look forward to being a member of the Lords for many years, this is a great group of guys. With all that said, the clubs have been busy as ever here lately. Many clubs have elected 2008 officers and already have schedules for much

of the year. That has been one thing I was able to do on my short hiatus, catch-up my calendar!

trodding the boards ...from M-18

Osage County (Imperial Theater) by Tracy Letts “the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years.” I’m sorry, but I beg to disagree. In AUGUST, three generations of the totally dysfunctional Weston family come together after its patriarch has disappeared. In the course of its nearly three and a half hours running time, we get alcoholism, drugs (prescription and otherwise), potheads, divorce, adultery, sex with students, nymphomania, cancer, Alzheimer’s, abusive childhoods, lies, family secrets, incest, and fighting, lotsa fighting. Surprisingly, homosexuality is left out though one sister keeps being referred to as a lesbian. The only normal person onstage is the Native American housekeeper who has to clean up the mess everyone else has made. This could be fine, but Letts is content to give us O’Neill, Williams and Sam Shepard regurgitated for the YouTube, tell all/show all era. I’ll admit that Letts writes engaging dialog (favorite line: “Thank god we can’t tell the future or we’d never get out of bed.”) that keeps the story going despite an exposition-laden act or two. Yet despite a few involving passages, ultimately AUGUST becomes a trite, soap opera-ish story about a bunch of ugly people acting uglily, to coin a word one of the doped-up characters might use, without the humanity that, say, a Pedro Almodovar brings to his similarly whacked out families. Anna D. Shapiro staged this saga smoothly though she seems to have encouraged her cast, particularly Deanna Dunagan as the clan’s venomous matriarch, to overact when a little subtlety might have been even more effective. Much more satisfying than the Westons of Oklahoma were the Pollitts of Mississippi in Debbie Allen’s all-black production of Tennessee Williams’ Cat

shadowed by her singing, that will be rectified in June when she’s due to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in a ceremony in New York City. In addition to her staggering talents, what has endeared Lynn to generations of fans is her warmth and truly down home, sugar’n’spice personality. For example, she was genuinely nice to a young girl who came to the stage to present her with a bedraggled looking rose and apologized for singing the wrong chorus in her Grammy-winning duo Portland, OR. Lynn appears to be having a blast on stage and seamlessly goes from simple ballads (Here I Am Again, Dear Uncle Sam) to honky tonk (I’m a Honky Tonk Girl, Fist City) to the comic One’s on the Way. And after 75 jam-packed minutes, when she launched into the inevitable finale Coal Miner’s Daughter there is no doubt that she truly is proud to be one. One could’ve asked for more songs from her Grammy-winning album Van Lear Rose as it’s exciting to hear her sing from her newer repertoire. And one could’ve also asked that she rehearse just a teensy bit more so as to avoid lyric-flubbing. But who I am to ask a goddess like Loretta Lynn for, well, anything except to come back to the New Orleans area for another concert just as soon as she can?

The Great Black & White Way—A Strange Cat Passing Through Xanadu in August

trip to New York allowed me to catch up on some of the more recent offerings on Broadway and catch up I did. The New York Times called AUGUST:

f you happened to be in the Quarter on March 15th, did you notice some unusual Wacky Wagons around? The Louisiana State Gay Rodeo Association (LSGRA) held their 1st Wacky Wagon Race fund-raiser with four teams and 10 bars participating. LSGRA Member-atLarge Mike Andrews told me that all went very well for this first of its kind event. Café Lafitte’s in Exile, Voodoo Lounge, the LSGRA and the Lords of Leather all had entries. Entrants were responsible for coming up with a wagon to pull to various stops throughout the Quarter and Marigny with “challenges” at each of the 10 stops along the way. Teams were also selling raffle tickets along the way with the team that sold the most splitting the pot. Congratulations to the Team Lafitte’s as they were the speed demons of the day finishing first in the race. The Lords of Leather won prizes for Best Wagon, Best [continued on Main-24]

on a Hot Tin Roof (Broadhurst Theater). The most remarkable thing about this landmark revival is just how unremarkable the race-changing is (though after all the talk of black men being on the “down low”, having an African-American cast adds another layer to Brick’s possible homosexuality). In her first time out as a Broadway director, Allen simply let this Pulitzer Prize-winning play speak for itself with generally engrossing results. That force of nature, James Earl Jones, has mined the text and fully reveals every facet of Big Daddy with precision, employing both volcanic outbursts and delicate nuance, in a role he was born to play. Anika Noni Rose holds the stage for nearly the entire first act as Maggie the Cat with a “to the manor born” attitude (note her insinuating “ah-ha”) that nonetheless occasionally shows cracks in its desperate armor. Best of all, the usually elegant and dignified Phylicia Rashad has altered her speech pattern in a revelatory performance as Big Mama. Fluttery, yet never fully covering up the steel magnolia beneath, Rashad disappears into her character (aided by Jane Greenwood’s just right costume) in a perfectly calibrated example of sublime acting. Terrence Howard, making his stage debut as Brick, is quite good but not in the same league as these other three pros; at one point he even got an “oh shit” look on his face when he unintentionally bent his metal crutch out of shape. This being Williams, there’s an awful lot of verbiage and Allen can’t prevent the momentum from flagging a bit towards the ends of Acts One and Two; one wishes each was about 10 minutes shorter. And Act Three veers into Southern gothic shenanigans. Yet Cat remains a great play and on Ray Klausen’s exquisite set, despite some tacky fireworks, this black Cat will prove lucky for all theatergoers fortunate enough to see it. Let’s hope our local theater companies will take a casting cue from this production as they mount other works from Williams’ oeuvre in the future. Among musical offerings, Passing Strange (Belasco Theater) is an autobiographical pop/rock musical written by and starring Stew, a black man who grew up among the middle class of Los Angeles in the 1960s/70s and went to Europe in the 80s to find himself. This is another one of

those journeys of self in which the hero, well-played by Daniel Breaker, ultimately discovers that you have to be true to yourself if you want to create worthy art. Stew is supremely talented and displays an acute intelligence whether describing church as “a Baptist fashion show,” deliciously parodying German cabaret artists or capturing the trust found among young Europeans in the wonderful song Keys. Yet, perhaps because none of the music, co-written with Heidi Rodewald, stuck in my mind once I left the theater, or because the show’s episodic structure did not allow for more than a fleeting connection with its well-drawn (and ably acted by a supporting cast of five) secondary characters, or maybe because it ended on more of a whimper than bang, while I thought Passing Strange was nice and enjoyed its affecting sweetness, I was unable to share in the enthusiasm that many audience members clearly felt for the show. Or maybe I’m just an old fogey and this is a show for a new generation. But, hey, I really, really liked Spring Awakening (with which Passing Strange shares lighting designer Kevin Adams who continues to create spectacular visual effects). Guess you’ll just have to go and make up your mind for yourself. I have a sneaking suspicion, though, that just about everybody reading this who goes to see Xanadu (Helen Hayes Theater) will enjoy it. Adapted by Douglas Carter Beane from the wretched movie, this Xanadu is virtually critic proof as it continuously pokes fun at itself...and its audience (“This is art not for the welleducated or intelligent.” one character intones, “Like you.”) With puns, naughty humor and cheesy, well, everything abounding, Xanadu is certainly over-the-top, never more so than when the cast is twirling around on roller skates. Yet its Top 40 score (Magic, I’m Alive, Have You Never Been Mellow? and the title song) ensures a certain level of aural enjoyability, especially when those accomplished scene stealers, Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa, tear into the hootiest version of Evil Woman you’ve ever heard. The show does have some slow moments, usually when no one’s singing, but otherwise director Christopher Ashley keeps things moving along and the stage filled with zany antics. Kerry Butler in the Olivia Newton-John role and Cheyenne Jackson as a dumb hunk are both very good. And were it not for the presence of Tony Roberts—who used to play Woody Allen’s best friend and here tongue-incheekly plays Zeus—Xanadu would unquestionably be the gayest show ever. As it is, when dozens of disco balls come down from the rafters for the finale, it comes pretty darn close.

Another Spring

S

pring has sprung, eternally young if only I were. Alas, but time marches on, never stepping back to recapture the glory of one’s youth, but brazenly going forward. Where is it leading me? What a great question that truly is, who really knows where tomorrow may lead them, what marvelous adventures are awaiting them in the wings of life? Will it be a comedy, full of laughter and insane antics bringing countless smiles to one's face, or perhaps a tragedy, the passing of one’s friend leaving behind it despair and loneliness. Or maybe it could be something worse. That is the real question of life and it always has been. Just what is waiting around the next bend for me? If we knew the answer to that question, would we do things differently? Could it alter the way we really feel about something or someone? This is something that you really have to think about deep down, because we just don’t always get second chances. So when you have something to say about something or someone, really delve down into the soul of your thoughts and remember the things you say and do can not necessarily be undone at a latter date. Now thinking back, I have myself

clubs & krewes ...from Main-20 Drag (that was Lord Alan impersonating Dale Evans) and Most Money Raised. The Lords did donate $500 of their winnings back to the LSGRA. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this race but have heard from numerous folks that it was a blast. I am also glad to hear that Alan was able to stay on that horse! The LSGRA plans on making this an annual event. The LSGRA also holds monthly Beer and Soda Busts at the Phoenix Bar on the Fourth Friday of every month from 9pm till midnight. Cowboy Mike tells me that this month they will also be holding a 50/50 raffle to benefit Buzzy’s Boys and Girls! Stop on by and say howdy to these good cowboys and cowgirls! You can check out www.lsgra.com for all kinds of information, too.

To start out the Lords had a great time with our friends in the LSGRA Wacky Wagon Race and enjoyed riding in the Gay Easter Parade for the first time this year. Their fund-raising schedule is filling up as well. Start with their Toga Party on April 19th to be held at JohnPaul’s and the Cinco de Mayo Celebration on May 4th! The Hot Daddy Contest will be held on Friday, June 13th at the Lords monthly

been too unkind to some folks in my long life and do I wish I could undo some of the harm I may have done? In my past remembrances I am really trying to asses that right now. Whom have I said things about in haste that I would like to recount now. No one I can think of offhand. Am I perfect? No way, Jose. It’s just that when it comes to the printed word, I only publish what I truly believe is the truth. Have I ever been proven to have printed a misconception, once again the answer is a firm no. What I say about anyone though it may be only my opinion, it is what I feel is the gospel truth. So if perchance you read something here concerning yourself or someone else that you know is not the truth, please contact me and let me know, but please have the proof to back it up with. Now I am the first to acknowledge that I am an opinionated bitch, but in no way do I wish to cause anyone undue stress. Now that we are on the subject of undue stress, what the hell is it with all these blogs today? Did you see in the news where people are losing their jobs, because of what they have posted or what has been posted about them? I have always found most blogs interesting and gain knowledge about the people who write them and learn some amusing things there, but I Beer Bust at the Phoenix. Get ready all you Daddy types – and hey you boys – start getting Daddy ready too! While the Lords are keeping the tradition of the Decadence Block Party and Beer Bust alive and better than ever, they have moved the Mr. Louisiana Leather Contest from Decadence Weekend to October. Look for more information on this to come soon. The Lords host a monthly Beer and Soda Bust at their home bar, the Phoenix, on the Second Friday of every month from 9pm till midnight. Find out more at their web site: www.lordsofleather.com.

he Bears are busy this spring too. Not that they had time to hibernate this winter with all they did during Carnival Season! The Bears continue to hold Beer and Soda Busts on the First AND Third Fridays of every moth at the Phoenix Bar. They have also held a Bake Sale at Cutters on March 16th – I hear it went very well with lots of delicious goodies! They are also making final preparations for their 14th Anniversary Celebration and will be holding a Craw-b-Que on April 26th. I can tell you now, the Bears know how to put out a spread and with Sonny and Tibby heading up the pit and Crawfish pot – WOW! Check out all the Bears have been up to and all they have scheduled at: www.bearsofneworleans.com.

O

ur friends and neighbors over in Mobile have been hard at it as well. The Southern Renegades held the “Black Party II” at the Roundup in Pensacola on March 5th.

have never taken them as more than fun things to share and add my comments to whenever the mood strikes me. But now some folks are taking them to a rather overtly nasty way of commenting on things, so much so that it is becoming a constitutional question. Some people are beginning to react to something by suing the bloggers for defamation. Are the bloggers responsible for what they are sending out? Some are claiming it is freedom of speech, others strongly disagree. I am sure it is not nice to read unsavory comments about one self on-line and I imagine it will eventually be proven to be slander. But just how far is this going to go? More than likely to the

Renegade Darwin tells me it was a very well attended party. Along with the rest of Mobile, the Renegades are getting ready for Mobile PrideFest April 4, 5 and 6. They will be over at B-Bob’s on Friday, April 4 as owner Jerry will be hosting a Leather/Uniform Night. Now I have been over to B-Bob’s for Jerry’s Leather nights in the past and have found it to always be a great time. It isn’t limited to guys and gals in leather – though it is encouraged – and leather usually gets the cover charge waived too. Saturday night, April 5th, the Renegades and Vision’s Twist get together and host the Official Men’s Party of Mobile Pride called “Rear Entry”. Now lest you think naughty, the party will be held on the Backside Patio at Visions and the entrance is in the rear. Getting your plans for Memorial Day set for the beach? Stop by the Roundup on Friday, May 23 and join the Renegades for a drink or six on your way back from the beach – or your way there for you late arrivals. Also, with the Renegades spanning the Gulf Coast, they are sponsoring two leather contests over the summer. Mr. Southern Renegade/Pensacola will be held at the Roundup on July 5th. Mr. Southern Renegade/Mobile will be held at BBob’s in August, on the Friday night before the Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest. Darwin told me that the winners of each contest will be sponsored by the Renegades to the Mr. Louisiana Leather Contest in October. And I bet more than a few of the Renegades will be joining them for a weekend here in the Big Easy! Need details on any of the Renegades events or even to just ogle the pics on their

highest court in the land. I always thought that the reason to blog in the first place was to stay in contact with immediate friends and share the joys, trials and tribulations of one’s life. When has it transgressed to becoming such wasted space? Some blogs have just become so far off base from what they started out to be, that they absolutely serve no purpose other than to cause pain and discomfort to others. Now I am a firm believer in the freedom of speech, but when we do go on to someone else’s blog, why not post things that are concerned with the current topic therein. When we happen to post also just say what is relevant to you and does not speak for others one way or the other. It will save a lot of miscommunication that way, and possibly just make life a little more pleasant for all of us.

The Big Dog Gets the Bone

nother disappointment in life has just hit me hard. As many of you know I became obsessed with presenting the New Orleans premier of The Little Dog Laughed since it closed on Broadway. Unfortunately after applying to Dramatist Play Service since that time it has remained unavailable this year pending a professional production. After checking back time and time again I was unable to find anyone in the state that had applied, in fact at one time I thought I had it, but it was a miscommunication. [continued on Main-25]

hat’s right winter has moved on at last and spring is here and so it's time to adjust our eating habits. It is time to let go of those warm comforting stews, chowders, chicken and dumplings and hearty casseroles. Time to begin to eat lighter, remember summer is just a few months away and don’t we all want

to be a few pounds lighter. Not only will we look better, but we’ll be healthier also. Salads, whether they are main course ones or a lighter lunch fare; they can certainly help in the quest to a better body.

Well I checked just a few days ago and alas my greatest fears were realized. The fact is that Le Petite has applied for it to run the end of July and into the beginning of August, which just happens to be Southern Decadence. I have always been a proud supporter of Le Petite Theater and will remain so. I wish them the best, I am just a little peeved I suppose and a little green with envy.

The Pink Patty Party

W

hat a crazy night it was indeed, I just about worked what little butt I have left completely off. The Pink Patty Party gave everyone a chance to wear another color other than the traditional green for Saint Patrick’s Day, although the printing on the coveted free give away t-shirts was in green. The place, Tubby’s Golden Lantern, 1239 Royal Street, and the crowd rowdy and ripe with anticipation of a new tradition. Think pink was the word of the day indeed. What had begun at Tubby’s in Fort Meyers, had made the transition to New Orleans intact, but that should have surprised no one because New Orleans will party for any reason what so ever. It was not only Pink Patty that brought the overflowing crowds out but also the fare well party for former owners Jim and Godfrey, who arrived all smiles, but with mixed emotions, confessing to having mixed emotions about having sold the bar. But as I have said earlier time marches on and what has been done, sometimes can not be changed. I for one will miss them both and in all honestly wish them both only the best with their finale retirement in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Speaking of the Lantern, I would like to take a moment to remind everyone of my new hours. I am working Monday and Tuesday from 1pm to 8pm, and for those of you are up early from 8am till 1pm Wednesday mornings. Actually our new hours are now from 8am to 4am daily with two happy hours each day one from 8am (Bloody Mary’s anyone) to 10am and then again 4pm. till 9pm

A Thought for the Day

S

pring has sprung, let's freshen the air, make nice with everyone, smile at strangers on the street, greet them with a cheery hello, and maybe, just maybe you won’t get mugged. Once again and this truly is a shame, be very careful where you walk especially in the lower Quarter. Again thugs are wandering freely through the area and the Marigny Triangle looking for unsuspecting citizens to rob and they are succeeding. What a shame it is that our streets have once again become unsafe for law abiding people. If you must go through these areas try not to go alone, and if you have no other way be aware of everything going on around you. If you must carry mace with you, don’t be afraid to use it. The life you save may be your own.

Singing One Last Song

W

ell my children it is time to go once again, but I’ll be back next issue and as always I will have probably to much to say once again. Some of it I am sure will be of some interest to someone; a lot of it will not be of course. Who knows maybe I’ll write something about you next time, but more than likely I will not. Perhaps I will begin another of my thinly veiled life stories; then again you’ve already read most of them. Perhaps I will sing ONE LAST SONG myself.

ell we’re right in the middle of Spring Break 2008 and I know all you college students are taking a much needed vacation from your studies. Now that the weather is getting warmer, it’s time to start working on those tans. Before long, you’ll be hitting the bars in shorts. And as the outside temperature gets

hotter, so does the nightlife in Downtown Lafayette. Sound Factory and Back Side continue to represent everything that is great about the gay community here in Acadiana. They are the one place you can always depend on for a good time. They’re open seven days a week and have a weekly lineup that rivals all the other bars. Tuesdays are a tradition with Karaoke

Mr. Cat Stud

I

never thought I would say that someone acted out the part of Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof better than Paul Newman, but I saw a performance last Saturday night that convinced me that someone could do it better, namely Cooper Helm at the Baton Rouge Little Theater. His acting was flawless, and it was just absolutely a joy to watch from my frontrow seat. I don’t know anything about him except what his bio indicated in the program, but he could easily outdo any of the actors you see in movies today. I just hope someday to see more of his work. He is a very talented man. I only wish I knew him better. Cooper Helm – you are a fine actor, and I wish you the very best. I’ve been a Tennessee Williams fan for many years. I recall several years ago when I had an appointment to interview him at Marti’s Restaurant in New Orleans. Tennessee often dined at the restaurant, and you could sit on Marti’s balcony and see Tennessee’s home down the street. It was a pleasant setting, the food was outstanding, and Marti was a great host. My writing group had one of our meetings at his place, and the setting inspired everyone to go out and create more stories. That’s what happens when you meet others and are offered a challenge to do better work. I never got that interview with Tennessee. I was working at the newspaper here in Baton Rouge at the time, and rather than call in and tell them I would be late, I decided to start back to be at work on time. As soon as I sat down at my desk, I got a call from Marti, who said that Tennessee walked in right after I left. He was running late that day and was sorry to have missed me, but he said he would make sure he talked with me when he got back from New York. This all happened a couple of months before his death in New York, so I never got to meet him. One of my most memorable trips involved the annual Key West Writers Seminar. Of course, the first one was on Tennessee’s work, and I continued to go to these seminars every January until I got involved with Mardi Gras balls. Perhaps I’ll start going to them again in 2009. I made so many friends there – Carl Hiaasen,

Lanford Wilson, and Donald Spoto among them. One year, I made a second trip to Key West. I grew a full beard and entered the Hemingway Look-alike Contest, did a short story entry, and drank lots of beer with the other contestants. I got a fine compliment for my efforts. One of the judges told me that it might offend me, but he thought I was too young to claim the title. He told me to give it ten years and enter again. I’ve never been back for that contest because beards itch, and this thing is held in June. When I lived and worked in Pennsylvania, I grew a beard, but the climate was more oriented to this growth. It was rather a warmth barrier against those cold northern winds. Last year, I did go to the Tennessee Williams Seminar held each year in New Orleans, but the reason was merely to meet one of my favorite movie stars from my youth, Tab Hunter. He was one of those very popular screen idols at the time, and I just wanted to meet and talk with him, get him to autograph his autobiography for me, and to tell him that I was a big fan – and still was. It was a very rewarding meeting for me, and I hear he will be back this year for another session at the seminar, but I will probably pass on it this time around.

Mr. Dreamboat 2008

I

told you last week that a selection committee was looking into the qualifications of several nice gentlemen to be named Mr. Dreamboat 2008. Well, that decision has been reached, so let me tell you something about him. Not only is he one of the most handsome men in the city, I could definitely say he could hold his own anywhere. He’s got those movie star looks with a gorgeous smile, laughing eyes that mirror the beauty that comes from within, and he has a heart of gold. It is always a pleasure being in his company whether it’s swimming naked together in a private pool or sitting across a conference table from him. Whatever the setting, the friendship comes through with a professionalism not possessed by that many guys. I suppose it is the professionalism that makes him stand tall among his peers. His knowledge has carried his career to

Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. Has charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. And the rest of the week at Sound Factory and Back Side is just as entertaining. Between karaoke on Tuesday nights and Show Night on Sundays, they pack each night with everything from kickass contests to drag shows and pool tournaments. And scattered throughout are fabulous drink specials and the unforgettable dance music spun by DJ Huggies. And unlike many other dance clubs, Sound Factory has a quieter more relaxed side, the Back Side, where you can take a break from the loud music and socialize

with your friends, or make some new ones. And when the conversations wear thin, all you have to do is walk around the corner to dance the night away. What more could anybody ask for? It’s two bars for the price of one, and it’s right in the heart of Downtown Lafayette. It’s no wonder so many people travel from all over to come out in Lafayette. It offers a unique culture and an unbeatable nightlife. I know a lot of you are traveling for Spring Break, but for those of you who decided to stick around, there’s no excuse for not celebrating in the Downtown. The Sound Factory and Back Side make sure every night is a celebration. So come on out and take a nightly vacation from life, especially if you don’t have time to take a vacation from work. Until next time, have fun and be safe. I’ll see you around town.

the heights, and he is well known, well liked, and well on his way to bigger and brighter accomplishments in the future. As a model, he could make any style stand out. In fact, he is a model individual, carrying himself expertly with the latest styles in clothing, and this expertise carries over to his home, which is one of the most beautiful in the city. With all the work that he does, he still has time to enjoy life, travel some, spend quality periods with friends, or just seek out ways to better his life while passing on his experiences with friends. From the personality standpoint, he possesses one of the best you will find anywhere. He is just a charming young man, an asset to his community, and definitely the best choice to become the first Mr. Dreamboat. Let me introduce you to this outstanding stud, a beautiful human being and a leader among men – as well as being the damn sexiest lawyer on the planet. His name is Joseph Possa, and he is our Mr. Dreamboat 2008.

refreshing one. Speaking of refreshing, Splash has done it again. I caught Cory and David redoing the floors. It was just another week of doing some improvements to this already outstanding facility. I think this attitude of improving things is a great asset for Cory. It shows his determination for creating a better atmosphere for guys and gals to come out and enjoy themselves. In a way, it is a way of showing his creativity, and with David being so adept at bringing it all to completion, it just really shows how both care for making Splash the biggest and the best dance emporium in the Deep South. Don’t take my word for it. Go check it out yourself. Lots of happy people celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at George’s. It was refreshing seeing all this activity. Richard was really enjoying himself too. If there is a real cutie out there, this is one guy that will find him in a crowd. It’s a talent that has always been one of Richard’s assets. He has been doing this for as long as I can remember – even back when he was driving that big white Cadillac. What ever happened to that car, Richard? I ran into Jeannie at Hound Dogs last week. I hadn’t seen her for a while, and it is always nice to be in her company. Hound Dogs was rather busy that day, and I met lots of people and passed a good time with them. Johnny was bartending, and it was happy hour time so lots of people were there for their refreshing drinks on this rather hot spring day. I didn’t realize it until after I had left that Joy wasn’t around. Well, let me re-phrase that. Joy wasn’t around, but joy was. Where were you, sweetie? Driving down Perkins Road after the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is really a sight. The street is littered, but it doesn’t seem to be as nasty as some of the other parades. There’s less trash and more beads around. In fact, the street looks almost as if it is painted green. There are green beads for miles along this route. I made my way over to the best coffee house in the city, Perks Coffee and Tea, for my daily dark roast. I made the mistake yesterday of getting my cup elsewhere, and it wasn’t worth drinking. I won’t say where it was, but if you want the good stuff, stick with Perks. Besides, I enjoy going there because the employees are the nicest around, and that cutie Brandon is a wonderful piece of eye candy. He could be

like St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a great time to be with friends, and it is a holiday that deserves more recognition, closely followed by St. Joseph’s Day, which deserves more emphasis too. They are only two days apart, and St. Patrick seems to overshadow St. Joseph – at least when it comes to recognized and popular holidays. Our local community of happy people came out in force wearing the green. I wanted (actually needed) to get a picture of that sexy stud Luther all decked out in green, but I didn’t manage to get one of him. However, when it comes to this gorgeous man, the color doesn’t matter. He looks fantastic in any color, and he makes my heart go pitter-patter every time I’m with him. I’ll corner him one of these days and do a complete discussion about him in a future column. I know he’s just one of the finer human beings you can possibly meet, and I’d consider it an honor to dine with him, chat with him, or do anything else with him. My goodness! He is a dynamic youngster and a damn classy individual too. Splash, George’s, and Hound Dogs did the green day in their own ways. I’m not too anxious to drink green beer, but I’ve done it many times. I think being around the people celebrating this holiday is what is important. Is it just me, or do people seem to enjoy themselves more? It’s a carefree attitude, but it’s such a nice and

ave you ever seen someone that you thought was just about the hottest thing on the planet? Well, you don’t have to answer that because I know it’s true. The bottom line is what could be classified as a serious case of lust. As you know, lust and love are two different feelings, but they are sometimes confused, or rather the individual feeling the emotions is a little bit confused. With that said, I’ll have to describe this British cutie – married and straight – but mighty nice to look at. I’m not shy at all if I want to meet someone, so I just politely introduced myself, and I now have a nice conversation-only relationship with him. He works for a firm (out of the city), and much of it is done at his home. When he is tired of computer work, he takes out jogging or riding that nice motorcycle to points east of his home. Whether he is in those nice jogging shorts or those nice and tight-fitting jeans, it just makes me tingle all over. Goodness! The big turn-on is that accent, almost difficult to understand, but, then again, it is so British that you just can’t help but admire it and him. He is a great looking guy too. I’d have to say he has a wonderful

swimmer body, tightly chiseled features, sparkling eyes, and a smile that could be in a tooth paste commercial. Even though the conversations are nice, I can also enjoy afternoon wine breaks with him. Isn’t a non-sexual friendship wonderful? Don’t answer that!

Easter Happenings

I

f you want to really enjoy your Easter Sunday, you need to be at the Gay Easter Parade in New Orleans. I’m going to head down that way and spend a day being with friends, having a drink or two (if I can find a driver for the day), and dine on some wonderful food that you only find in the Crescent City. I know a lot of places will be closed, but I lived in the city long enough to know which ones are open for business on just about any holiday. I’ll have my cameras handy in case I run into any Red Stickers or Acadian studs along the way. After all, this is an event you won’t find in our historic and closeted capital city. I’m looking forward to seeing Mark, John, Mina, Kevin, Timm, and D.B. again. As I say, I have to find a driver. I feel a need for some relaxing hours ahead. I also find Easter to be a great holiday. It is such a beautiful period of time, like the charm of Christmas and the family gatherings around Thanksgiving. I know a lot a people like Halloween, and some good things happen on this holiday, but there are those who use it to spread mischief that is sometimes hurtful. If it is all in fun or maybe raising funds for a good cause, I support it completely. However, destruction of personal property is a no-no, and [continued on Expose-8]

2008 AIDS International Candlelight Volunteers & Participants Needed in Austin

A

ustin, Texas - This year’s 25th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial will take place on Sunday, May 18 from 8pm - 9pm at Republic Square Park. Volunteers are needed for group and individual speakers, singers, poem readers, performing artists, bands, prayer, remembrances, songs, stats, community literature, music, declarations and commitments. This memorial is free & open to the public. Austin will host its 9th year participation of this event on May 18 when millions

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-5 mean people sometimes take advantage of the holiday in the name of fun. Give me the serenity and peace of Easter or Christmas or Thanksgiving, and even St. Patrick’s Day and St. Joseph’s Day. And if I want to pass out candy on Halloween, then that is okay. Whatever happened to apple bobbing or sharing home-made treats? I guess things like that just went with the wind – somewhere back in time. As we move into spring and all the social functions that the seasons of warmth bring, think of all your blessings – one by one. They are there. It is up to all of us to find the joy and comfort in the warmth of the human spirit.

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is designed to honor the memory of those lost to HIV/AIDS, show support for those living with HIV/AIDS, raise awareness of HIV/ AIDS, and mobilize community involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The Global Heath Council, (GHC), the Voice of Global Health, www.globalhealth.org, has selected this year’s theme for the 25th International Candlelight Memorial Service as: Never Give Up, Never Forget, symbolizing the crossroads in the epidemic this memorial represents. choreography for the National American College Dance Festival in New York City by adjudicators of the 2008 American College Dance Festival South Central Conference held at Stephen F. Austin State University from Feb. 27 – Mar. 1, 2008. The dance piece selected to represent Tulane University is titled Ana-Alicia and was cochoreographed by Ms. Burr and Ms. Crump. Ms. Burr and Ms. Crump were also nominated to the National Festival for Outstanding Undergraduate Choreography. Ana-Alicia was initially selected from approximately 52 pieces for performance on the South Central Gala concert, Mar. 1. From that Gala concert, Ana-Alicia was selected for the National Festival with UT/ Austin’s Futar Tomo (Two Together) choreographed by Holly Williams, University of North Texas’ En I Me (Part I revised) choreographed by Shelley Cushman, and San Jacinto College South’s Letting Go choreographed by Michelle Manzanales. Amanda Burr is a senior majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology with a minor in dance; Ms. Crump is a junior BFA dance major candidate. The National Festival showcases dances selected by the adjudicators from each of the national regional conferences based on their outstanding artistic excellence and merit. The primary objective of the National Festival is to highlight, on the national level, the outstanding quality of choreography and performance that is being created on college and university campuses. The National Festival provides this venue in three gala performances, presenting works from approximately 30 colleges and universities. This year, the National Festival will be held in June at Barnard College in New York City. The nationally and internationally known dance adjudicators were Kitty Daniels, Leslie Jane Pessemier, and Dan Wagoner.

Girls Gone Wild at B-Bob’s

e-mail Subject: Shirley Q. Liquor Southern Decadence: I plan to attend this year, but I have to protest including racism in a celebration of sexual decadence. I do not think I could be offended by anything sexual, but I do not get the connection of sex and eroticism to a white man wearing blackface and pretending to be an uneducated, fat, black woman. Black women have enough to bear just being black and women without white men making fun of them. It is particularly disgraceful that gay men (mostly white) would find that behavior funny when we have been mocked for our movements, our talking, our clothes, our particular jobs, our sexual practices, our choice of sports, and anything else alleged straight comedians can think of. That this trash talk actually draws a crowd is not surprising because inside we share the hurt and it is easier to laugh than to recognize it. Like Jerry Springer, it appeals to our worst human nature. It should not be put on a stage to give it shabby dignity and allow sick people to repeat it and somehow think this is acceptable. It is not, and that is why, if we say it, we whisper it. We are ashamed. Eroticism can be sophisticated, mature, and classy. Ethnic humor and racism are narrow-minded, juvenile, and low. The first can be well done on stage. The second is immoral and has nothing to do with the first. If the supposed comic has talent, he can create another way to express it. If that is his only show, pay him to go away. Thank you for considering that. --Tom Lazenby, Delray Beach, Florida

but Wayne from Big Daddy’s and Jim from the Friendly were just coming in. We got to visit a bit, but it was 6pm, so we headed on over to The County Club. Earlier in the week, we had mentioned we had wanted to take in the Thursday night affair at The Country Club. Irish Mike told us we were in for a treat and how incredible the choices available were. You can join the fun here from 6-8pm for $19 a person. Yes, that’s right, $19 for two hours of tasting Chef Miles Prescott’s latest selection of wine and cheese every Thursday. But, before we get to the wine and cheese, we have to let ya’ll in on the tunes of Hassan Allen and the Orleania String Quartet setting the mood here with favorite jazz and classical selections, all live! This is one of the best renditions we’ve experienced in the city. There were some 17 wine selections, from the night’s menu and some not on the menu, while there were 14 selections of cheese, most available for purchase from Stein’s Market or St. James Cheese Company. In order to begin, you go to the bar where Donovan accepts payment and wrist bans each patron participating. Once banded, you head to the center dining room where we found manager Heath Walker serving the selections of wine. Not far from the wine table is Caroline who will help with your cheese selections, while Michael Bill works the floor serving water and clearing tables once a selection is completed. Of the wines we tasted, we found the Meulenhof Riesling Kabinett, a little on the sweet side, most to our liking. However, there were sparkling selections like Roederer 25th Anniversary Brut, whites like Hopler Dry Reisling and reds like Peiurano Estate Vineyards Petite Sirah available which were quite good in their own right. We had an absolute field day with the selections of cheese, especially the La Serena, a raw sheep semisoft brie from Spain; the Bayley Hazen Blue, a cow blue/ cheddary one from the USA; and the Gorgonzola Dulce, a cow blue/triple cream from Italy. There is something here to tempt the taste buds of everyone.

Turning Into Cowboys

N

ot knowing a thing about Western wear, we turned to Opal Masters and Darwin Reed for assistance on Friday. After all, they at one time, showed horses, and were experts in the field. Why do we need Western wear ya’ll ask? Well, tomorrow was to be our first major fund-raiser to attend as Mr. and Miss LSGRA (Louisiana State Gay Rodeo Association), the organization’s first Wacky Wagon Race through the streets of the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny. We met Opal and Darwin at Sylvester’s in Kenner at 11am. We had been there a couple of weeks before and were so overwhelmed at the selections and the prices, we left not knowing exactly what we should get and could afford. They had arrived prior to us and were already seeking assistance from one of the clerks there. After trying on hats for a while, we finally found out what sizes we needed. The next chore was to find one in the right size and price range, but both matching. The first rack we chose from were on the pricey side, so Opal went off with the clerk to see what they could find in the range we hoped for. They

found two perfect Tony Lama black felts we liked and thank God, they were on sale. So after having Rips stretched a bit, that was taken care of. Then it was time to find each of us a pair of boots. For Rip it would be a short black boot that zipped to accommodate his feet since his bouts with gout. The Durango boot was found and it only took three sizes to find the right fit, and this too was on sale. For Marsha, it was difficult. She needed a 9 narrow in a womens. After trying on some 10 pairs and not liking any of them, Opal found a gorgeous leather Twisted X in natural python, and after only two tries found the right fit. And to make this better, was also on sale. After finding two skirts and two shirts on sale, the ordeal was finally over. Expensive, but not as expensive as it could have been. To thank Opal and Darwin, we took them out for lunch at Don’s Seafood Hut. Of course since it was Friday, and during Lent, we had to wait a short time for a table. A couple of specials on the board had caught our eye. So once we were seated, we asked a few questions before making a selection. Opal chose the shrimp and crab pasta in Alfredo sauce, Darwin the lunch portion of the fried seafood platter, Marsha the special broiled and stuffed fresh flounder with shrimp and crab stuffing and Rip, the deep fried stuffed soft shell crab with shrimp and crab stuffing. The portions were huge and all were scrumptious. After chatting a bit after lunch, we bid our farewells and thanks, and we went our separate ways. We still had to make a quick stop at Dillard’s. Then it was off to C’s to pick up Rip’s prescriptions, which cost practically nothing since he’d met his insurance deductible. The savings here helped offset our spending spree earlier in the day at Sylvester’s. Of course when we arrived back home, there was no place to park, so it was up on the sidewalk to unload all the boxes and bags from Sylvester’s. While Marsha took the van to our parking lot, Rip completed the deposit for the bank and processed the last parade entry forms for vehicles in the Gay Easter Parade. Once Marsha arrived back at the office, we took off down Royal to the bank. Now we could relax and have a little fun. Our first stop was Double Play where we caught up with Doc and Stephen. Stephen showed us some of the pics of the vehicles he was looking at for his next auto purchase. Doc got to sit a minute and chat with us while we had a couple of drinks. It seems the lovely Jaded Jade (aka Javier of Starlight) had been in earlier, flushed her keys down the toilet in the ladies room and turned that facility into a mess. They were still trying to get the toilet up and running. We say send the bill to her! We headed down the street to see Miss Ashlee at The Corner Pocket next. Several of her regulars were in as was Jay Sewell. It was a nice afternoon to catch up on the latest. Miss Ashlee has moved and is now closer to us living in David Wieck’s old apartment on St. Ann near Dauphine. So when we pass by and smell some of that cooking, we’ll know Miss Ashlee is rattling those pots and pans. Maybe if we give a knock, she’ll give us a bite so we won’t wither away to nothing. Our next stop was to see Allen at Oz where Princesse Stephaney and Sable Nicole Starr were setting up for Drag Dingo. Yes, this colorful duet holds court many [continued on Expose-19]

Fridays and Sundays at the land of dance for this Dingo stint. Tommy was in since Glenn was on vacation in Chicago. Allen was busy entertaining the boys and girls with his boyish charm and assets. Ya’ll know exactly what we mean! A Friday would not be complete without popping into Cafe Lafitte in Exile. After all, Beaumont is upstairs every Friday serving 25¢ oyster shooters. Don’t arrive too late, because when they’re gone, they are gone. Easter Grand Marshal Orlando and sidekick Joe were there. They never miss a Friday either. But when we saw them, we were sure all of the oyster shooters were gone. We were lucky. We got there just in time to order a dozen, almost the very bottom of the bucket. Another great thing on Fridays is the $1.50 cocktails here from 4-9pm. It had been quite a day, so we headed back home right down the street.

St. Joseph’s Altar

I

t’s now Saturday, March 15th, and due to Holy Week, the St. Joseph’s Altars were moved up to this weekend. Unfortunately, due to a special commitment, we could only attend one St. Joseph Altar this year, and it had to be the one behind St. Louis Cathedral right around the corner from here. We arrived just as a tour group entered ahead of us. It gave us time to write down our special intentions and deposit the sheets along with our offering to St. Joseph. The line moved along and we were able to stop in front of St. Joseph on the altar and offer our special prayers of thanksgiving. Then we picked up our small bags which are given to each visitor which include a blessed medal, holy prayer card, fava (lucky) bean, cookies and bread. We made two additional donations and took our St. Joseph’s candles and placed them on the altar. There we picked up more fava beans and medals for sisters and parents living down the bayou where they do not have St. Joseph’s Altars. Once home, we took last year’s fava beans out of our wallets and planted them on the patio and placed the new beans in our wallets. We removed the bread from the freezer and placed the new piece there. It’s said that as long as you possess the lucky (fava) bean you will never be without coins and the blessed bread will assure that you will never go hungry. The bean also reminds you to pray to St. Joseph.

Wacky Wagon Race Raises $1,602 for LSGRA

F

ollowing our stop at the St. Joseph’s Altar, it was back to the office to get ready for LSGRA’s Wacky Wagon Race. We took our new cowboy hats out of the boxes and placed our Mr. and Miss LSGRA crowns on each respective hat. We also had two pins made, one with Mr. LSGRA 2008 and one with Miss LSGRA 2008 to wear. Additionally, we wore jeans, but decided not to wear the new boots, since it was going to be a long race. Once ready, we left out the front door and headed down the street to Cafe Lafitte’s where the teams were already gathering. First we spotted a covered wagon, much like those in the old Westerns we used to watch as kids on TV, finding out this one was from the LSGRA Team. The next one we spotted was a wagon topped with an oversized rocking horse with jew-

eled eyes surrounded by men all in black with purple feathers on their hats and the sides of their bodies, which turned out to be the Lords of Leather team. We then saw a little red wagon with pride material on top belonging to the Cafe Lafitte’s Team and finally, a decorated covered wheel chair belonging to the Voodoo Team. About that time a carriage with tourist was passing by Lafitte’s when the mule bucked and started going backwards running the carriage into the sidewalk garbage can and newspaper racks outside of Clover Grill. The mule apparently got spooked by the rocking horse on the Lords wagon. The driver could not make the mule go back down Bourbon, but had to turn onto Dumaine. About that time another carriage came up and the same thing happened. Then another one and the same thing. The police came up and made the Lords move their rocking horse wagon and hide it behind LSGRA’s covered wagon. A lady with the carriage company came into Lafitte’s to find out the route of the Wacky Wagon Race to make sure her carriages were not near the Lords rocking horse wagon. This start sure put “wacky” in the Wacky Wagon Race. At each stop each team of four was required to do a challenge and three members of the team had to have a drink before receiving a flag in order to move onto the next destination. One team member could opt out of having a drink in order to be the designated driver of the wagon. For the Lafitte’s challenge, each team had to do a Country Western Karaoke song. It was pretty entertaining, some more than others. Then the race began. The team member in cowgirl drag for each team was required to ride in the wagon to the next stop which was Starlight. Here they shot a game of darts, did three drinks and went on to Voodoo. We skipped Voodoo trying to get ahead of the race to get some good photos, so we went straight to Rawhide. Here the challenge was to roll the dice till the first number called was rolled, get your drinks and race off. We were already at Good Friends when the first team, Lafitte’s, got there to toss a ring over the flamingo’s head. We knew we couldn’t keep up with the race on foot so we called a cab, hoping to get to the Golden Lantern before the teams did. Each team came and went, and we waited and waited. Almost a half hour or so passed until we finally did a call back. We waited and waited some more and finally got a cab. Since it had been such a long period of time and seeing how fast the first five stops had gone, we decided to skip the Lantern and go on to Cutter’s. On the way there, we got worried we wouldn’t be able to get a cab from there so opted for JohnPaul’s at the last minute, instead of Cutter’s. We made the right choice. It was not long before the Lafitte’s Team raced in to perform their challenge here, bobbing for the #1, #2 and #3 balls from a wash tub full of balls. First tries, and 1, 2, and 3 were completed in record time. However, LSGRA President Lance had not arrived with the completion flags for JohnPaul’s, since the Lafitte’s Team was so fast so they sat for quite some time before Lance arrived. Then the Lafitte’s Team was off to the Phoenix. Voodoo was the next team to arrive at JohnPaul’s. Then it was the LSGRA Team followed by the Lords of Leather Team. The whole thing had gone so fast that when all four teams had completed the challenge at the Phoenix, it was

1:30pm. The final destination, Cowpokes, was not opening until 3pm, so the race ended at JohnPaul’s. Around that time in comes the new Crack Whore, Chris, so since three has beens were here, Aletha and us, we had to get a pic with CW 9. We were not sure who Chris was until we saw him. We had met him when he previously worked at The Country Club, and did indeed know who he was. But ya’ll wouldn’t be able to tell it from the pics at the Crack Whore Ball. Cafe Lafitte’s won 1st Place in the Wacky Wagon Race as the Fastest Team followed by Voodoo. However, the Lords of Leather was 1st Place in Most Money Raised from raffle ticket sales (480 tickets-$960), Best Wagon and Best Drag (Alan Kelley). LSGRA won 2nd place in Most Money Raised (360 tickets-$720) and Best Wagon, while Voodoo won 2nd place in Best Drag (Anita Rich Goodman). Cafe Lafitte’s sold 195 tickets raising $390 and Voodoo sold 39 tickets raising $78. Lords of Leather received half of the raffle ticket proceeds as 1st Place in Most Money Raised, $1,102, and immediately turned around and donated $500 of that back to the LSGRA. The event including the Lords of Leather donation raised $1,602 for LSGRA and will help the organization host the International Gay Rodeo Association’s 24th annual Convention and Royalty Competition October 29-November 1 at the Marriott Hotel here in New Orleans. A Triple Header on Sunday

I

t seems like the whirl wind our lives are in never slows to a twirl. However, twirling was on the horizon this Sunday evening. First stop was JohnPaul’s for Marcy Marcell’s presentation of Those Beautiful Girls benefiting Buzzy’s Boys & Girls and In This Together. The show which was waiting on its sound man ran late so it gave us time to visit with the crowd coming in from Cowpokes following the Fleur De Lis Divas show. Tami Tarmac was already wound up and was definitely the “big bird” in her bright St. Patrick’s Day green with hubby Paul rolling his eyes at the diva. Elizabeth Bouvier looked exceptionally glamorous with her soft womanly features showing through that pretty face with Stephen at her side. Then we saw the lovely Cathy Fox and hubby Barry, Opal out of drag as Mike and hubby Darwin, and Brittney O’Bryan. After a 45 minute delay, the opening production brought Todd Blauvelt to the stage with “beautiful girls” Regina Adams, Eva “the Diva” Las Vegas, Tami Tarmac, Zaa Zaa de Lahore and Lifetime Achievement Awardee Marcy Marcell. We were on a tight schedule, but did get to see other stars hit the stage as well including Elizabeth Bouvier, Raven Kennedy, Denny Summers singing live, and Ursuline Burgundy before heading out for our next engagement. The event raised $375 for each organization. A quick trip brought us back to the Quarter to Good Friends Bar. It was the 14th annual Trailer Park Beauty Pageant and we arrived in the middle of competition. Emcee Princesse Stephaney, all sun burnt from riding in the Metairie St. Patrick’s Day Parade earlier in the day, had contestant two on stage and she was a vision as Uneeda Stop DressingLikeThat. The audience found out her favorite food was fresh gigged frog legs; hobbies: stalking,

and sniffing bar stools; most embarrassing moment: When I woke up and found out that warm weenie next to me was last night’s Lucky Dog; world vision: Everyone should be happy with what they have or don’t have; and why should you win the title: So I can be a “trophy” wife! Could it get any better than this? Yes, it could! Contestant three, Miracle “Cool” Whip’s favorite food was, you guessed it, cool whip, anything white; hobbies: BJs in the bathroom, most embarrassing moment: now; world vision: Can’t see world from here; and why should you win the title: Cause I did last year. Then it was back to contestant one, Tammy Jo Juanita Crandall Crowe with here favorite food: fried baloney sandwiches; hobbies: yelling at kids, cooking meth, reading to blind nuns; most embarrassing moment: Burning down my own trailer cuz it looked just like that cheating bastard Billy Ray’s house; world vision: more trailers, more meth houses; and why should you win the title: So that cheating bastard Billy Ray will finally see what he gave up. We got to see Princesse as Peg Bundy entertain some and then Good Friends manager Joey gave out special door prizes. We got a can of vienna sausage and a bottle of Boone’s Farm wine as did the judges. The scores were tabulated and Tammy Jo Juanita Crandall Crowe won the pageant with first runnerup Uneeda Stop DressingLikeThat. It had already been a night, but we were off for the next venture down the street for show night at the Land of Dance, Oz on Bourbon. We got there just as emcee Blanche Debris was getting things off, complaining how hungry she was. Well, it was her lucky night. We ran right up to the stage to give her our can of vienna sausage and bottle of Boone’s Farm we’d just snagged at the Trailer Park Beauty Pageant. She went to the DJ booth to eat the sausage and summoned the Fab 3, Tyra Van Ryan, Mercedes Ellis Loreal and Coca, to hit the stage to open the show. These multitalented girls never cease to amaze us. Just when you think they couldn’t possibly do something to dazzle you even more, they slap you right across the face with it! And we had know idea what surprise was in store for us. When we heard the name, we thought we were back in Mobile, Alabama. It couldn’t be, but it was, Venus Shante’ Da Vis. We got to see and meet this super diva on our last trip to BBob’s. She is indeed an incredible talent, but she had something even more to sock us and the crowd at Oz when she hit the stage in a brilliant red ensemble highlighted with black bra and panties overlaid in lollipops. Yes, that’s right lollipops! As each person came up with their dollars during her "Lick It" song, Venus pulled off a lollipop and plopped it into their mouths. The crowd went wild. We understand from Tommy that he’ll be bringing Venus back once a month for show night, that’s every Sunday at 9pm. We can’t forget about the floor show between the stage numbers when Blanche came out in the audience snagging a boy here or there in town for Spring Break, and were they young, cute and HOTTTT!!! The show came to an end, but the fever pitch continued as the Spring Break boys and girls got to catch those hunky Men of Manwatch hop on the bar to tantalize them as DJ Tim Pflueger kept the dance tempo going circuit style!
