A Southwest Supper

Y

ou may think Mexican when you read the menu, but the facts are quite simple, this is the southwestern version of many traditional Mexican dishes; remember if you will, the true settlers of this region of our country. Anyway, I not really hear to give a history lesson, but rather recipes for a great meal. So here it goes. QUESADILLAS 3 tablespoons butter, softened 9 (8 inch) flour tortillas (I use the whole wheat ones)

4 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese 12 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled 1 tomato, seeded and chopped 4 pickled jalapeno peppers, finely chopped 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 ¼ cups salsa Spread butter on 1 side of each tortilla. Place tortillas, buttered side down, on ungreased baking sheet; set aside. Combine cheese and the next four ingredients; spoon evenly over half

of each tortilla (about ½ cup per tortilla). Fold tortillas in half, press lightly. Bake at 400 degrees for five minutes, turn quesadillas, and bake five more minutes or until cheese melts. Cut into wedges and serve with salsa. Serve warm. SOUTHWEST FLANK STEAK 1 (1 ½ pound) flank steak ¼ cup fresh orange juice 2 tablespoons chili sauce 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon honey 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 ½ teaspoons grated orange rind 2 tablespoons chili powder ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground red pepper 1 medium orange, thinly sliced Score steak diagonally across the

grain at one inch intervals. Place steak in a heavy-duty, zip-top plastic bag or large shallow dish; set aside. Combine the next nine ingredients; pour over steak. Place orange slices on steak. Seal or cover, and marinate in the refrigerator for at least eight hours, turning occasionally. Remove steak from marinade, discard marinade. Grill steak, covered with grill lid over medium-high coals, seven minutes on each side or until desired doneness is reached. Slice the steak thinly across the grain. Serve with Fruit Salsa. FRUIT SALSA 1 cup fresh pineapple, diced 1 cup fresh mango, diced 1 kiwifruit, peeled and chopped ¾ cup sweet red pepper, diced 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro, minced 1 ½ tablespoons sugar 2 ½ tablespoons white wine vinegar ¼ teaspoon dried crushed red pepper Combine all ingredients in a small bowl, tossing gently. Cover and chill eight hours before using. Let stand at room temperature before serving with hot meats. Yield: 2 cups HOT PEPPER RICE 3 cups cooked long-grain rice 1 (8-ounce) carton sour cream 1 (4.5-ounce) can chopped green chilies, drained 1 (8-ounce) package Monterey cheese with peppers, shredded ½ cup (2-ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese Combine first three ingredients. Layer half of the rice mixture into a lightly greased 10 x 6-inch baking dish, top with the Monterey cheese. Repeat, Sprinkle with the Cheddar cheese. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for fifteen minutes. CHILI CORNBREAD 1 cup self-rising cornmeal ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon chili powder 1 ½ cups (6-ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese ½ cup chopped onion 1 cup milk 3 tablespoons bacon grease 1 teaspoon garlic powder 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 (7 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained 1 (4.5-ounce) can chopped green chilies, drained 1 (2-ounce) jar diced pimientos, drained Combine the first four ingredients in a large bowl; add Cheddar cheese and remaining eight ingredients, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Spoon batter into a lightly greased ten [continued on Main-18]

n a sunny afternoon, with gas prices just .03 off the $4 mark, I took the five mile drive to Esplanade with A/C on high just to see Fr. Bill Terry at St. Anna’s Church. I was a congregant there when Fr. Dodwell was the priest. I miss him each time I retrace my steps onto the Treme. And I know that although Fr. Dodwell cannot be replaced, the Church is in great hands with Fr. Terry. Since his arrival five years ago, St. cookin' w/auntie dee ...from M-16 inch cast iron skillet. Just a few of the programs now active in the St. Anna’s Community, are gun buy-backs, mental and physical health care, the Murder Board, and youth counseling. until the date of his death. He never admits to his crime but starts writing a prison newspaper which condemns the death sentence under any circumstance. The script if rift with thoughtful substance about this subject and others contingent upon the idea. The imprisoned writer John Brennen, played with electrifying conviction by Michael Aaron Santos loses his long time next door cell inhabitant to the death toll who time has come. The new cell neighbor, Bobby Rayburn played with technical wizardry and a heart rending mesmerizing sense of acting by Jason Kirkpatrick, is a red neck ignorant country guy who in his own words is a “nigger and Jew” hating racist almost too stereotypical but Kirkpatrick makes it work. As the plot unfolds we learn that he is an uneducated possibly mentally handicapped man:, unloved by his mother, put in a home and raped by a roomful of fellow inmates - the very type of possibly innocent man his next door cell mate is trying to keep from the death penalty.

We hear all the arguments against and for “victims of society” pro and con. John Brennan the writer finds out a fact that if revealed would get the guy a life sentence based on an insanity plea, but the red neck Mr. Rayburn accepts his guilt, admits it and wants redemption via a meeting with Jesus based upon a fraudulent prison cleric’s advice, further proving his mental derangement. And opening up more questions without sense and/ or more answers without the sound questions. Is the death sentence civilized or not? Necessary or not? Is an insane man innocent if he commits murder or not, sort Michael Aaron Santos in Coyote On A Fence (Photo: Kelly Sherlock) of like Frankenstein when he throws the [continued on Main-21] little girl into the pond? Today the couple lives not far from the church in the By-Water. They have two children, a daughter 31 and a son 23. As a younger man before going into business, he served in Viet Nam with the Navy. Today his days are filled with work in the church. Presently, his most demanding project is the September 6th gun buyback. This will take place at two locations in the City. Three teams of volunteers are needed for the event. There will be two evenings of training before the day long Saturday work. The police anticipate more than 300 guns being removed from the streets. Working with the Musicians Union, musical instruments can be swapped for guns. Musicians take a part in the growing Church life, and they wish to give back. Each Wednesday there is a Mass, $5 dinner and the music of professional New Orleans artists. It is an inexpensive evening of good food and great music, an experience that few outside the Church have enjoyed. If this sounds like “passing a good time,” mark your calendars for Wednesday evenings at 6pm. Stewart Butler and I have enjoyed this program with much satisfaction. A mid-week service is a special boost to a frustrating week. For the price, the meal, music and Mass are a steal. St. Anna’s works with the NO/AIDS Task Force to provide rapid AIDS testing, and with Tulane psychiatrists for special needs. Included the in health

program are checks on blood sugar and blood pressure, massage therapy, and acupuncture. The Murder Board remembers all victims, and the community is also planning a memorial service. A single rose for each death has been sent to the Mayor, Police Chief, City Council and City Attorney to show support for police and victims, and let the community know that these deaths will not be forgotten. In a call to St. Anna’s from a non-member, Mother of a victim, she said, “I thought no one cared or remembered.” Fr. Terry will not let that happen. He believes that there are no throw away people. He will see that the Murder Board continues until crime is under control. Fr. Terry takes great pride in his diverse staff. Luigi is his altar boy and right hand man. Dianna, a fifth generation member of the Church, is the coordinator of the health project. Jamie oversees the 12 Step groups and is a mentor for girls. There is a Latino program that teaches English and holds an all Spanish Health Fair. He told me the staff serves with joy and pride at a job well done, not with ego. They all feel that they are made better by serving. And all know they are filling the purpose that God has given them. “It is amazing to be here,” said Fr. Terry. We have a $600,000 a year budget from grants and donations. Only $200,000 is earmarked for operating expenses. $400,000 is spent on com-

Coyote On A Fence

T

his Bruce Graham play, brilliantly directed by Ashley Ricord, is an unforgettable knockout of a show. The script and Ms. Ashley’s directorial concept are so well carved that they fit together like the work of a gorgeous Mallard half tester bed. And you know we don’t find that kind of craftsmanship around much anymore. Therefore I say without a doubt as a critic that this production is as priceless a work of art as can be found on the stage of our town of late. Now if I only had 100 thousand to get me a hand crafted Mallard bed, or cabinet or to invest in a longer run of this all to short showing of Coyote On A Fence ...but alas our city “leaders” can always find the funds for football or some other caveman activity, but for the arts, well let’s dip the city in chocolate and make it a real tourist attraction... As to the play: the script was old hat about an educated man who commits a crime that puts him in solitary

sappho psalm ...from Main-18 River. He lived in Uptown New Orleans just blocks from the levee, and visited the River site often. He was a married business man when his daughter was shot at 19 years of age. This started his walk with Christ. Fr. Terry describes himself as being wild in his twenties so he understands the need of the young to experience what their elders tell them not to do. He also admits to being a former alcoholic which makes him able to understand people and social rejection. He took part in a prison ministry at Angola before becoming a priest. There he saw hardened felons cry at the loss of a beloved prisoner. His part in the social justice program taught him lessons that he had not realized existed in daily life through busy and family. He knew from the death of his daughter that time was limited. “What will I do with my time?,” he asked himself. He opened his Bible and read the story of Lazarus in the Book of John. Jesus had been devastated and cried. “I can believe in a God who cries with me,” he said. One day driving home from Angola, he experienced an epiphany. While praying, God called him to serve in the Church. Terry rushed home to tell his wife that he was going back to school to study for the priesthood. She was shocked and prayed for a week before God made His desire for Terry known to her. Together they dedicated their lives.

munity projects. After Katrina, there were only 15 members. Today the Church is back to pre-Katrina membership. In addition to Mass on Sunday and Wednesday, there is a Sunday School for children. When I attended St. Anna’s, the congregation was Gay friendly and there were Gay members. Today the attitude of inclusion comes directly from the top. We respect the dignity of all human beings, I was told. The Church is racially and sexually diverse. “We are not a Gay church,” Terry said, “but we have many Gay members who are very active.” Although Terry studied ethics with the Jesuits at Loyola, I don’t think that Liberal thinking came from them. On July 27th, the Church will celebrate the Festival of St. Anna with a processional through the streets of the Treme and French Quarter. “Permits are in place, and we are very excited to honor our patron Saint,” Terry went on the say. His joy in being there is evident in his broad smile as his long white pony tail dances across his clerical collar. I asked if the Church was expecting a large turn out for the Festival. The answer was, of course, because we preach the gospel, we honor God, we are diverse as we embrace differences, we help each other to be accountable and we have a special relationship with the community. St. Anna’s is a loving Christian church of diversity.

trodding the boards ...from M-20 to ponder. Playing their cell block guard Shawna DuChamps is Angie Joachim, who in police uniform with billy club gives one of the best performances of such a role as I may live to see. She is magnificent in a beating scene and a magnetic presence in every other one she does. Ms. Joachim makes a small part into a monument to gifted actors everywhere; this is what she does in this role and nothing less. Not only one of our town’s best actors and playwrights, Mr. Santos designed the stunning set for this show with a minimalist idea and perhaps a small budget. But what he did with a few yards of page fencing, bunk beds separated by a faux cement half wall and extensions of the playing area stage right and left and from stage center into the audience like a cat walk for models was astonishing. The very simplicity of the concept captured the essence of the script’s soul searching plot and the ambience, with few materials, of a prison cell, a nearby bar away from the prison and two areas for a New York Times reporter to interview Santos about his role as prison journalist. The reporter, Sam Fried, was convincingly played by Kris LaMorte who also demonstrated how a smaller part can be so polished and burnished as to shine like gold in every scene.

This play was an explosion of dramatic expertise and theatrical art on the stage of Delgado Community College. Drama Hall, 3rd Floor. The show was done in conjunction with Inside Out Productions, a local company founded in 2005 by four UNO alums, Mike Harkins, Ashley Ricord, Michael Aaron Santos and Jim Winters.

Private Eyes

I

t would be hard to find a better group of actors playing actors who are actors in certain scenes who then become non-actors in other scenes in the very excellent production of Private Eyes playing at Southern Rep Theatre under the auspices of Golden Eagle Theater Company. Think Pirandello updated and then rush over there and see this excellent show. It’s the old story of young married actors who get into an unadulterated mixup of adultery or maybe not. It was my impression that the playwright (Steven Dietz) meant

nothing to be totally defined in this brilliant example of his writing of a play withing a play within a .........? It’s a script mindful of a room full of mirrors facing mirrors and one is not sure before which mirror stands the real item (or scene or person) causing the reflections in the others.. Reality vs. fantasy, yes, very Pirandello. If you are a theater patron who appreciates really original drama with a dollop of the fantastic or if

you’re an actor and you can put your own ego aside long enough to enjoy a real play and great acting, rush to Southern Rep for this one. After all Private Eyes is about three actors, a director, the director’s wife (also an actor, a dick, or private eye and the subject of adultery) and a female shrink named Frank who seems to know them all profes[continued on main-22]

Go for Growth?

I

have been faced with an unusual dilemma; and it goes to the very heart of how we see religion, and especially, for me, Christianity. At The Big Easy MCC we have just taken on 10 new members, meaning in just ten months we have tripled our membership. I know this is a source of rejoicing, and people are going to write me off as mad if I question it, but whilst I rejoice, I am being very careful to examine exactly what sort of growth we seek, and how we go about getting it. You see, as I preached on Sunday, there are two very different types of Religion (not just Christianity) and the question of growth and evangelism is often key to which type a church ends up being. There is one type which believes that because the vast majority of humanity is doomed to burn, then ‘saving souls’ must come above all else – it also believes that this end justifies almost any means – people are threatened with hellfire and bribed with a sort of heaven that looks like Liberace’s boudoir. This sort of religion puts growth in numbers above all else, and doesn’t especially care how people come to be in church or to recite the formula of ‘giving their lives to Christ’ as long as they go through the motions. This sort of Church is quite able to pack in astonishing growth rates, and often becomes a ‘mega church’ because it is offering consumer religion; a program of spiritual entertainment geared up to keep the folks orthodox, controlled and of course, terrified of hell. There is another form of religion, a type I desperately want our little church to reflect; this type is patient – it understands salvation is a journey that all are traveling on, and it may take people a long time to decide to travel together. It is generous and trusting and not about rules – it trusts God to change where change is needed. In this sort of church evangelism is concerned with Good News, not the bad – it is also much more about witness, about being different and modeling the qualities it claims for Christianity in order to attract, not bullying or bribing. Bertrand Russell said ‘Neither a man nor a crowd, nor a nation can be trusted to act humanely or to think sanely under the influence of great fear’ – churches are the same; ‘There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love’ [1 John 4:18] and if God is love we cannot form a relationship of

loving trust if we believe God may throw us into eternal torture at the slightest whim. One religion plays games with fear, and uses fear as a means to an end – the other type rejects fear as incompatible with love and is content to patiently await the privilege of journeying together with someone, and does not need to force their hand with threats. There is always a temptation as a Pastor to do something that works in order to get folks to come to church; even if their coming to church has little to do with their growing in God, or deepening their relationship with God. Sometime it is just ‘fire insurance’. Pastors often regard this as ends justifying means, but once people have been conned or deceived or mistreated it is likely to distort their whole future growth. I have also been tempted; I can preach about the wickedness of organized religion and the warmth and safety of our little island of faith and I know it will bring a response, it will play to people’s fears and wounds and although people often need their experience affirming, if I am not careful then that sort of sermonizing will diminish me and the Church I am trying to help build. Our opponents in the movement to include LGBT people in the Christian journey are not horned devils anymore than we are – they are variously ignorant, honest, frightened, deluded, sincere and confused but not demons. We have ultimately more in common with them as fellow travelers and human beings than we have dividing us and I am praying for a church that will embrace enemies, love difference and seek growth in depth and love as strongly, or more strongly than growth in numbers. So far I have been fortunate that our growth rates have been gradual enough that we can bring people in as family, that we can socialize with each other, eat together and form the ‘ties that bind’ in a way that has keeps up with our increase in numbers. My prayer and concern is that we keep this sort of growth uppermost in our minds, and are patient to allow people to come to us at their speed – not ours. There are six and a half billion journeys going on, and if I, through my impatience, end up being a stumbling block to any one of them then I don’t deserve to pastor a church; if the God I claim to serve is all I claim, then truth will out and the God of endless love will in the long term prove as attractive to others as it is to me and our family at The Big Easy MCC. Rev Clinton Crawshaw is the Pastor of The Big Easy Metropolitan

trodding the boards ...from M-21 sionally, but don’t tell. Complicated? Yes, brilliantly so and all of this directed with a startling pace and magical talent by Andrew Elliott. On a very minimal set of a couple of tables and some chairs, and some pure clear clever lighting, actors Keith Launey (Matthew), Liz Mills (Lisa), Leon Contravesprie (Adrian) Angela Papale (Cory) and Staci Robbins (Dr. Frank, a psychologist), demonstrated what real acting is all about. Perfect performances from everyone and a script that is so original and imaginative you’ve just got to see it. Private Eyes should be seen by every theater patron’s eyes!

The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940

I

n a clever set designed and built by that amazing man of many talents Rene J. F. Piazza, to resemble the library of a home in Chappaqua, NY circa 1940, the small stage of his production company Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans did just that. It was a workable and clever concept, well done for a small community theater. A bit of fancy chairs, tables, bookcases that opened and led to hidden passageways, and a rich theater patron who owned the mansion and loved to invest in shows sets the plot. So a meeting has been arranged with several actors, a director with a suspect past, and the grand dame herself to discuss the plans. However things go awry when it is discovered that the director and others assembled were

involved in a show he did in which some serial stabber kept killing off the pretty ladies of the cast. The plot thickens and the audience is treated to a trivial but delightful little mystery well acted and directed by the cast and crew as a tall man all in black, face covered, starts killing off the house guests. Of course the grand dame has a German maid who is as wacky as a blond furred gorilla on LSD (remember this is 1940s Nazi time). I think my favorite actress was the grand dame played by Starr Mason as Ms. Elsa Von Grossenknueten in an elegant mauveish draped gown, or was that purpleish? And she played it with a sort of Margaret Dumont (from the 3 Stooges) tongue in cheek condescension style. Another favorite was the lyricist of the work in progress, Bernice Roth played by Stephanie Duplechin making her entrance fresh from New York City and dressed to kill in imitation leopard-looking matching hat and outfit, her long red hair draping around anything as she gulped down another and another and another drinkypoo. Jessi Norton as the German maid or was that maids (but don’t tell) was a laugh maker with every Wagnerian entrance or scene and that handsome and talented Brian Collins convincingly played the perhaps crazed director, Ken De La Maize. Now don’t think I didn’t like or was not impressed by the other good looking fine performers (I wanted to wrap a couple of them up and take them home for the weekend) but space is limited so let me just say that adding greatly to the

trodding the boards ...from Main-22 Baverstock and Doug Delcambre as Roger Hopewell. The show had much sparkle and many laughs because of their deliciously good contributions of well honed stagecraft. Rene’ J. F. Piazza directed with a good sense of workable camp and excellent pacing and as mentioned he designed the attractive useful set. Well, there was one secret bookcase that just wouldn’t slide well, but it seemed part of the script. If it works, kids, keep it in. Chelle Ambrose did the period costumes which were quite in keeping with the style of the script. Danielle Hull did the fine sound and lighting, and a whole lot of other people worked long and hard nailing, painting, cleaning and helping to create the big magic of a delightful little show. A show which you should all go and enjoy. This is an ensemble group that keeps getting better and better and their love and dedication to the joy of theatre makes every production glow.

T

he Summer Lyric Theatre at Tulane University seems on a winning streak after its first musical of the season, a mesmerizing, stunning production of Pal Joey. The second production, Panama, Frank, Mercer, and De Paul, a sizable hit on Broadway in the 1960s, was another equally polished and classy show with an added touch of high falouting kick-a-poo-joy-juice technicolor sets and costumes and enough energy to power some Chocolate City for at least a week. And please remember that The Summer Lyric Theatre at Tulane University has nothing to do or is in no way connected to that psychologically enclosed very private entity, Tulane University I’m told.. SLT only uses some of T.U. buildings and staff and facilities and students and cannot be influenced by those who pontificate over and rule The Tulane University Department of Theater and Dance. Unless, of course they may want to kick someone on the SLT staff off and tell him to hit the bricks. I’m not sure who signs the paychecks. These comments are in response to a query I had regarding other comments in my previous review of Pal Joey which implied some connection or other of this totally separate (and you can tell by the quality of its productions) theatrical company from other things done on campus regarding theater and dance. Questions? I have a lot of answers. 504.361.0943. So now back to the totally unaffiliated production of a wonderful show set amidst that Vatican City of Universities, Tulane U. Li’l Abner as staged by our own remarkable TSL Artistic Director B. Michael Howard with such a crisp, fresh, joyful well paced vision was, yes, let’s say it kids,

awesome. And Director Diane Lala added many a dollop of bright beauty to his work. Rick Paul’s set designs looked like they were fresh off the stage of some NYC Broadway designer in appearance, style and finish. Charlotte Lang’s costumes would be up for an Oscar if she had done them for a movie version. Peter Pfeil’s lighting design was creative and as effective as some of the Kick A Poo Joy Juice alluded to in the show. His lighting concept gave the whole show such a sunny kick of color and content we all got happy. Conductor/Musical Director Kenneth L. Leach got a Carnegy Hall performance of a whole lot of polished pure sound and harmony from the orchestra, and Don & Linda Galled brought that old Al Camp cartoon to life with such authentic wigs and makeup. The performers were quite simply Camp character brought to life on stage. C. Leonard Raybon was a handsome charming Li’l Abner, although he had enough eye liner to be silent film star Rudolph Valentino’s understudy. He has a beautiful voice, he’s

multi talented and was a perfect cast for this role. Daisey Mae played by Eleanor Bernstein was lovely and full of energy. Wayne Daigrepont was a perfect Marryin’ Sam but it was Jorinda Junius who stole the show as Mammy Yokum. What a thrilling and well conceived performance. Mat Grau, III, as Pappy Yokum was excellent as her partner. Gary Rucker in that lime green zoot suit was a marvelous and creative and unforgettable Evil Eye Fleagle. Robert Pavlovich as Earthquake McGoon was both funny and wonderful in the role. [continued on Main-27]

Cass & Friends

I

t was a fabulous Saturday after noon and night at a birthday party over in Melrose Place. In addition to all the gay neighbors who attended, the garden and home saw many friends coming to pay their respects to our favorite handy man, Cass. This was his latest 39th birthday, and it was an elaborate setup from beginning to end. Of course, after all those margaritas, I don’t think Cass remembered the last few or anything that happened past a certain time frame. It looked almost like a reunion of Hibiscus Bookstore customers. I hadn’t seen many of these guys since my days of hanging out at the store. It really was a nice gathering, and I certainly enjoyed myself. I was joined by my sexy neighbors Robert and Brandon, who stopped by the party prior to going to an art exhibit at the Shaw Center for the Arts. These two guys really know how to swing with the big boys yet they are definitely two of the friendliest guys around town. Living so close, I can always hear them around their pool or see them at events like the party for Cass. I need to ask them out for dinner sometimes. They are super nice. Two other really nice guys are Van and Chuck. These two entrepreneurs are the owners of Nature’s Treasures, over on Government Street at the entrance to the Garden District. In fact this entire complex of shops is a shopper’s delight as well as being able to dine in antiquity. Yvette’s offers some refreshing drinks and delightful sandwiches for those stopping by to view the antiques on display. Of course, it is extremely nice to know that Nature’s Treasures is still around. When the previous owners left town, it was closed down, but Van and Chuck got the rights to the name and opened in this new shopping plaza. Be sure to check out this area. You will really enjoy it. I hadn’t seen Joe in quite some time. He was with Gary and Frank when I got around to photographing him. Actually, he and Gary had just returned from a visit to Minneapolis to see the Sword man and his loving nurse. They were down recently for a visit, and I missed seeing them, so maybe I need to put the cold north country on my list of places to visit while the heat is around. I’m not into cold – unless it is in the form of a refreshing drink or an air conditioned place for resting. It’s always nice to see Tim and Michael too. I usually only see them around Mardi Gras in Spanish Town when they are looking for refreshments

or needing bathroom privileges. That’s what friends are for, and when it comes to these studs, my door is always open. TTT was also in attendance. He assured me that he had been a nice boy lately and didn’t need new knee pads. His regular work plus some real estate work and his constant church work is really keeping him busy. He looks good, so life must be treating him well. I was also glad to see Caz, a friend from years past. It was such a pleasure to be standing by the window and seeing him get out of the car and enter the house. He was with a very nice and pleasant young man, but then he has always managed to stay young through his younger friends. That is something he has managed to do over the years, and this youthful connection has kept him ever so young at heart. I usually only see Ken at the Apollo bal masques although I ran into him frequently when the bookstore was still open. I managed to corner him, Rick, and Ted for a picture. I believe they were picture-shy at first because darkness had set in before they agreed to pose for Ambush glory. In fact, I don’t recall missing anyone, even the straight bartender in his skimpy leather attire, but I did promise him that I wouldn’t use his picture in the paper. That’s fine. I can see the day when he will be asking for a spot along with other hot tails. I think he was pleasantly surprised at how much fun this party turned out to be. By the way, that was my leather that he was wearing. It brought back memories of my time with Mark and the Lords of Leather. Seth and Shane drove up from Destrehan to be with the partygoers. I don’t know much about them, but I can say that the time I spent with them was very pleasant. They just seem to be such a happy couple. Another couple from down Gonzales way was Curt and Bruce. We knew a lot of people in common, so this was a joy to be with them. Apollo was well represented at the party – Dennis, Joe, John, Les, and Corey. All these guys are constantly promoting activities in this Mardi Gras krewe, and I still say that the last ball Apollo was really one of the most outstanding thus far. I have to credit Joe for a lot of this because I know how he works, and I know his goals at seeking perfection. He guides and others follow, and this is a good thing. New Orleans was represented with Kelly, Dennis’ brother, who is a really nice guy. Robert was the lively, somewhat exhibitionist of the group, proudly showing off his teeny gay thong. Those

rainbow colors were almost at complete attention all evening. Casey was also there as was Chris and Jeff. Casey owns Bumble Lane, a full service spa. He has nice fingers and really knows how to use them. It was especially nice seeing David and Will in attendance. I see David at various meetings around town, but I hadn’t seen Will since I ran into them at the Farmers Market, probably over a year ago. Time is going by so fast that it is difficult to keep up with things. I’m hoping to see more of these two, and I’m going to have to take them up on their invitation to visit their home. Of course, the man of hour was Cass, who just happens to be one of the nicest guys around. I don’t think he expected such an elaborate affair, but his daughter and his friends made this a spectacular time for him. And let me tell you, I have all the pictures to show exactly what a great time he had. I am so sorry to inform you that you will never see some of them in this family publication. Let’s just say that he had a marvelous time. I am so happy to have been invited to this party. It was one of the best I’ve attended in quite some time. Thanks for the invite, Cass.

All About Town

D

inners have really improved for me and Gerry. Luther is making it a point to join us. He is really a busy guy now that he has taken on his workload at George’s. He’s been filling in for Guy while Richard and Guy have been off on another trip. I think it is another cruise but I’ll have to tell you more about that when they return. Another birthday celebration took place over at Splash recently. That sexy photographer Ben really let his hair down as he celebrated his latest. He is such a little hottie. My goodness! He is certainly an asset to this dance emporium, and you can enjoy his pictures by going to the Splash website. That Rapides stud is still shaking things up in the neighborhood. He just radiates with sex appeal, and he really knows how to lay on the charm with that cute smile and wonderful personality. It is always nice to see him. It’s always nice to see my English buddy too. It is difficult for me to place this handsome and extremely sexy stud that walks around the neighborhood for exercise on a motorcycle. However, this is one and the same individual. Once those tight workout clothes come off, he dons the loose motorcycle pants and protective head gear and leaves for points unknown. He is such a charmer. My tongue gets hard every time I see him. Jeannie was her charming self too when I saw her last week at Hound Dogs. We talked a lot about the past especially different times that we had experienced with Jacques. It seems

that Jacques has a new love and is off to points unknown. I believe this new one lives in Alabama, so I never know if he is over there or in Ville Platte or down in Belize visiting his brother. We have really had some good times together. We even recalled Steve and Mr. Bill. The memories all came flowing back. We still mourned Jeremy. I haven’t seen my Lance in a couple of weeks so I need to get over to Splash for my dose of manly goodness. This stud is and always will be tops in my book. He is just the best and sexiest guy I’ve known in a long time. And he gets sexier and cuter with age. There are others who are right up there with him, and I don’t want to overlook them either. I really think Ty is perhaps the most underrated stud in all of Red Stick. He and other half Stephen have been working out, and their bodies are beginning to really come around to look rather nice. However, in my humble opinion, Ty is perfect just the way he was and is right now. Besides his adorable personality and cute smile make this young man definitely one of the hottest guys on the planet. I could just sit and look at him, but I’m afraid if I did I might start drooling on myself. And when you get Ty with his Stephen, you have to know that you are looking at perfection. I met Kurt the other night at dinner. He seems like a great guy too. He was a little on the quiet side, but I’m sure if Luther has anything to do with the situation, he can loosen him up in a hurry. I haven’t talked to Josie, Claudette, and Debbie lately, but I see them constantly. It is usually when Josie is walking her dog or when Claudette is working in the yard with the cigar hanging from her lips. Debbie is here, there, and everywhere. I haven’t seen Little John in a while, and I’m getting lonesome for him. That means a dinner must be somewhere in our future. I always have to wonder if he is off doing the army thing when I don’t hear from him. I think that is only one weekend a month now that the Kansas duty is completed. Colla surprised me with some candid pictures last week. This was such a treat from one of the best treats around this part of the country. He seems to be enjoying his home in Kentwood, but I do enjoy it when he pays a visit to old Red Stick. I don’t normally like tattoos, but Colla has one that is absolutely amazing, and I always love seeing that one. BC Boy has started riding with a bicycle club, but he was complaining last week about the skimpy shorts they had to wear. I told him to be proud and show off that manhood more. After all, when you got it, flaunt it. Joy flaunts it too, but from her, that is definitely a good thing. She was her cheerful self last week when I ran into her at Hound Dogs. I don’t think I’ve ever [continued on Expose-5]

A Time for Adjustment

H

e sat watching the television set in his little efficiency apartment. The paper had described it as a large well lit hot tails of red stick ...from EX-4 seen her when she wasn’t cheerful and living the good life. Her personality is really outstanding. Ditto that for Johnny. The local chef Barry continues to make everyone happy at Capitol Grocery. He doesn’t live too far from me so we talk whenever we run into each other. His apartment has a balcony overlooking scenic Eighth Street, right down from my English pal. I’m always running into people when I’m out checking out the neighborhood but with the heat we’ve had lately, I find the coolness of Splash, Hound Dogs, George’s, and my restaurants of choice to be the best places to spend my leisure time. It was 100 degrees in old Red Stick yesterday, and that is hot, my friends. Even the afternoon shower did little to cool things down. In fact,

spacious apartment overlooking a beautiful patio, with a fountain located in the heart of the historic French Quarter. He had read it in the paper at the library in his home town of Coral Gables, Florida, steam was coming from the streets and sidewalks afterwards. It was so hot I even considered taking a dip in Robert and Brandon’s pool. The only problem is that I just prefer the shade much better. It’s strange. When I was younger, I couldn’t get enough sun. Now I can’t get enough shade. Therefore I hang out in my garden or sit at my computer writing columns, reviews, and articles. Regardless of the heat, I’ll take it over the cold. I just don’t care for that kind of climate. Give me an island any old day of the week where I can romp in the sand and let it all hang out. Now, I am wondering why in the world I let Kevin talk me into a vacation in Arizona in August. There had better be some good-looking cowboys out there or I’m going to be pissed! I’ll let you know.

and it sounded perfect for his needs. He wanted to get away from the big mansion he had inherited after his lover passed away and wanted to live a simpler life-style just as he had done before meeting Russell. Russell, dear Russell, rich spoiled Russell. Russell, whom he had, fell madly and deeply in love with on their very first date. Russell, whom all his friends said was unattainable for him or any one less on the social ladder than himself. Russell who had fallen head over heels for him on their very first date as well and had promised himself heart and soul to him forever as long as they both should live and did so. Their love had indeed flourished, as impossible as it seemed, he was of course of a different social cast, not really poor, for his family never wanted for the very basics of life, but that was just about it, they had the basics, but more than that required stretching the budget somewhat. He could remember as a child, going on family outings in the summer, maybe out to Crandon Park Zoo, for a day at the beach, his mother packing a lunch to eat on the shore at the picnic tables provided, under the coconut palms, toting along some Kool-Aid to drink, because cokes were to expensive. His mother always found a way to make ends meet for her six children and they never seemed to go with out, though they had Kool-Aid instead of cokes and homemade lunches rather

the beach burgers, they swam and romped and sometimes they even got to go into the zoo and visit with all the animals there. Those were special times, special days, maybe in celebration of one of their birthdays. He couldn’t always remember the occasion, but even today, after all these years, he remembered those special days. It was at one of these outings with his family, that he came of age. That he found out that he was different than most of the other guys he went to school with, that in fact he had very little in common with them. He must have been all of twelve years old at that time, and as his friends started to come of age their interest began turning towards the girls in their classes, but not his, not really. Oh, he joked with them and teased the girls along with them, but the truth be known he wasn’t having the same feelings that they seemed to be having. The other guys were noticing the changes that were taking place in the girls in their classrooms, the sprouting of breasts, the rounding out of their nubile bodies. He had not noticed this so much as the changes that he and the other guys were going through. He noticed a lot in the showers after gym. The slight growth in pubic hair at first and then more by the months until some of the guys were sporting quite a healthy patch in between their legs. He noticed [continued on Expose-8]

He on the other hand was wearing the baggy surfer type suit his mom had bought for him last fall, when the summer clothes from the year before were discounted. He was lost in thought, silently watching a young man in a red suit, when out of nowhere; the ball landed bouncing in his direction. Without much thought he swiftly moved and caught it. “Good catch,” he heard a deep voice above him, and looked up. Looking up directly into the crotch or Mister red suit, his well endowed midsection almost squarely in his face, who was smiling down at him. “Thanks.” He muttered. Then from out of the blue, the older guy asked if he’d care to join the game as they were short a dude. He readily accepted, he loved volleyball and had played a lot after school. He was of course about four inches shorter than most of the guys, being about five years younger, but you wouldn’t have noticed the age difference in the way he played. He attacked the ball savagely when ever it came towards him and even managed to score a point or two. They played a good hour or so, until their bodies glistened with sweat from the heat. “Cool off time.” One of the guys shouted and they all made a beeline into the cooling water. “Last one to the island gets me off another shouted.” They all dived into the surf and began swimming to a smaller isle just off shore from Crandon. He followed them playing their game. He not only kept up with the older boys, but surpassed most of them crawling out of the water on the isle’s shore second only to the dude in the red Speedo. He lay next to the guy, panting just a bit from the exertion of the race. “Not bad,” the guy next to him smiled, “not bad at all kid.” “I’m worn,” he replied. “Rest a few. How old are you anyway?”

A tall blonde came up behind them, “I was last Kenny, lets get it on man,” and he headed into the scrub bush just a yard or two away. The under growth was thick, but there was well worn paths among it, almost forming a maze. Kevin followed the older boys through it. They walked about two or three minutes [continued on Expose-16]

one last song ...from Expose-8 and then the pines began, shading the pathways from the sky. It was beneath one of the stands of pines, the boys stopped and much to Kevin’s shock, stripped out of their brief swimsuits. The blonde took Kenny’s privates in his hand and started massaging them; they began to stiffen at once. Kevin looked over at Kenny, puzzled. Kenny smiled back at him and raised a finger to his lips, signaling him not to make a sound. Kevin didn’t, he felt himself getting just as hard as Kenny, he crossed his legs, trying to hide what was taking place under his swim shorts. It was then that Kenny reached over and took Kevin into his own hand. He stroked Kevin through

the material and Kevin felt a strange light headiness. Kenny pulled at his shorts until they fell around his feet and he instinctively stepped out of them. He was staring heavenward into the tree tops, he began to quiver a bit and Kenny’s hand left his crotch. He glanced over at Kenny; he had moved his hand to the top of the blonde’s head which was buried in his groin area now. Kenny sunk to his knees, reaching out for him at the same time and pulling him to the ground just above his face. He was trembling now, partly from fear, wondering just what was happening, and partly from the excitement of it all. Kenny was now shaking as well and thrashing his

n just a few more days, we’ll be entering the hottest month of the year, both in terms of temperature and in celebrations. As the thermostat rises, things in Downtown Lafayette keep getting wilder as we get closer to the big back to school celebrations. In the meantime, you still have a few more weeks to take care of all the Summer Drink Specials. Sound Factory and Back Side have really gone all out this summer. With their weekly lineup, there’s something incredible going on seven days a week. one last song ...from Expose-16 legs about. Suddenly Kevin felt warm between his legs, warm and moist and all at once his world exploded with the most wondrous feeling he had ever felt. Kenny lifted him up and to the side, lowering him gently to the ground. He could hear Kenny gasping and he grunted out loud and somehow he knew that Kenny was feeling just what he had a moment ago and deep inside him he had wished it was he who had given this pleasure to his new found friend. The blonde swung around and took Kevin’s place above Kenny. Kevin watched in fascination as the two of them satisfied each other. That was the first day he met the guys on the summer beach volleyball team. Soon after he joined them, replacing their former team mate, who later he found out had moved away. He was the youngest and least experienced of the team, but soon he was hitting his stride in all their activities. It was time for an adjustment in his life, one of many yet to come. He readily accepted the fact that he was indeed different than the other guys, but it didn’t bother him much, he had five other team mates who were just like him. All six members of the team were gay and each day after practice, they took care of one another, sometimes in groups, sometimes just in pairs. It was a strange relationship indeed. They weren’t in love, they were just horny teenagers. They were great together on and off the court. But as time moved on the guys each went their separate ways. Off to college or moved out of town to work on their careers. There were just two of the original team members left by the time Kevin turned seventeen, he and the blonde. They remained friends for quite a few years, even after they also left the team. They were the ones who started to cruise the gay bars together in the downtown area. For the longest time they weren’t very successful until they figured out that most of the guys thought they were a mo-

They really make sure no matter what night you decide to take a break from your busy life, they’ll not only be open, but have a festive party waiting for you. The week kicks off every Monday and never slows until it all begins again seven days later. Mondays are a celebration of Monday Madness with all your favorite Happy Hour drink specials. And for those of you who have become accustomed to the weekly Pool Tournament on Back Side, don’t worry about a thing. Your favorite competition hasn’t changed. nogamous couple. They soon rectified that and suddenly they were the hottest pair of buddies in town. The blonde finally fell in love with a handsome Latino and moved to the west coast of Florida, leaving Kevin to find a new set of friends and be the only one of the original six to stay in the Miami area. Years passed and times changed the freewheeling of his sexual youth diminished and as he matured, he craved someone of his own to settle down with, and just after his twentieth second birthday he met Russell. Russell, dear Russell, dear spoiled rich Russell, whom he had fallen in love with, madly and deeply on their very first date. He went immediately from being very frugal, a trait he inherited from his mother, to having anything he desired, almost overnight. It was time for another major adjustment in his life. It was one he had no trouble living with, and living very well he might add. Unfortunately Russell was taken from him very young and he felt the loss deeply in his heart. He was left with Russell’s entire estate and was a wealthy man himself now, but he longed for the earlier days of his life, longed for his past like so many of us do, and so he started looking to begin again, without all the trappings of wealth he inherited. He decided to move to New Orleans and start anew. He looked in the paper for a small unpretentious place to live. It was not anything like what was described as in the paper. He could almost touch the opposite walls when he extended his arms outward, hardly spacious. The fountain in the courtyard was overgrown and stopped up with algae, and the small windows hardly let any light in at all. But it would suffice for now until something better came along or someone. He turned on the stereo listening to ONE LAST SONG, before dressing to go out for dinner. To be continued. You may contact me at donniejay@hotmail.com.

Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by Chad Evans. He doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. Wednesday are Wild Wednesdays at Sound Factory, with a special theme party every other week. So be sure to stop by and get all the details about upcoming parties. Tomorrow night, Wednesday July 30, the celebration continues with the Wildest Wild Wednesday yet, a Masquerade Party with a Summer Twist. Grab your favorite mask or anything else to hide your face, and come by to celebrate. It’ll definitely be a night to remember. Thursdays are Thirsty Thursday, with drink specials that will top any

others in town. Friday nights are Long Friday with specials on all your favorite longneck beer. Saturdays are Sizzling Saturday at Sound Factory, with drink specials on all your favorite liquor, not just the well drinks, but all your favorite call and premium brands as well. And to end the week, Sundays begin with Sunday Tea at Back Side and continue with Show Night at Sound Factory. What a way to end the week. And it all begins again the next day. Downtown Lafayette keeps getting better. And as the month of August winds down and all the new college students arrive, the celebrations will just get wilder. Until next time, have fun and be safe. I’ll see you around town.

commentary John McCain Should Talk to the Real Expert on My Family-Me by Alan O’Brien-Myers (Alan O’Brien-Myers is a rising senior at Holyoke High School in Holyoke, MA, where he lives with his two moms and younger brother.) s someone who was adopted by two lesbian moms, I was certainly disappointed to find out that John McCain, a candidate for President of the United States, doesn’t “believe in gay adoption.” What’s not to believe in? Many gays and lesbians adopt children and create wonderful, loving families. My moms adopted me out of foster care when I was eleven years old. I’m seventeen now. I love my family. My moms provide for me in all the ways that other parents provide for their children. We have our problems just like everybody else, but in the end we take care of each other. We believe in each other. What we don’t believe in is John McCain and any other politician who is out of touch with the reality of American families. Not all families are married moms and dads with their biological children. Many children are raised by single parents, unmarried parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and more. What makes these families real is the love and care they have for each other, their commitment to seeing each other through good times and bad. John McCain says he supports a quicker route to adoption so kids who need homes can get them faster, but he clearly has a bias against my kind of family and all the ones I listed above. If John McCain had his way, my family would not exist. I’m not giving up my family just because John McCain is confused about what really makes a family. If John McCain really cared about families, he would trust the professionals who have agreed that sexual orien-

A

tation doesn’t affect someone’s ability to be a good parent. He would listen to my voice and the voice of many other kids being raised by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents. It’s not that our families are better, just that we’re basically the same, except in most places the laws don’t protect our families very well. If John McCain really cared about families like mine, he would let LGBT people marry the person they love so that all families can be treated equally to others. My two moms, my little brother and me, we’re doing just fine. We could do a little better if we had the support of people like John McCain, who as President or even as a senator has so much power over how other people live their lives. Without his support, we’ll keep doing what we’ve always done-love each other, care for each other, argue like all families, make up like all families, and continue to work for a country that really respects all of its people and families. We’d rather have our next president support us. Wouldn’t you?
