Gustav Cuts Southern Decadence Short

T

he approach of Hurricane Gustav brought the giant 37th Southern Decadence weekend to a close early cancelling all events on Sunday, August 31 and Labor Day, September 1. The 35th Southern Decadence Parade and the 15th Southern Decadence Bead Toss were cancelled on Sunday, as well as the 11th Southern Decadence Survivors Outer Loop Bar Crawl on Monday. Additionally, the 4th Bourbon Street Extravaganza was cancelled on Saturday, August 30. Early estimates from area businesses predicted this to be a record weekend based on huge increases in business on both Thursday and Friday, August 28 and 29. Southern Decadence events on those days brought in the crowds for French Quarter events and the Leather Block Party in the Marigny. A voluntary evacuation was called by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. Due to this call the majority of hotels put all guests out at noon on Saturday, August 30, leaving them on the streets. In spite of the evacuation, Saturday night was also a very profitable one in the gay community. The mayor called for a mandatory evacuation on Sunday and all remaining tourists and locals were urged to leave the city. Flights had to be rescheduled since the airport closed at 6pm on Sunday. Many tourists had to rent cars to leave the city. And several tourists ended up staying with locals who chose to ride out the storm. Luckily the affects of Gustav were minimal in New Orleans. However, our friends in Baton Rouge, Lafourche Parish and Terrebone Parishes were not as lucky. Severe damage occurred in these areas as well as other areas across South and Central Louisiana. Please consider making donations to the various relief organizations, especially the Red Cross, to help Louisiana citizens in need. The 38th Southern Decadence Celebration of Gay Life, Music and Culture is scheduled for Wednesday September 2 through Labor Day, September 7, 2009. For the latest, visit SouthernDecadence.COM.

Decadent Ducks Raise $2,000 for Food For Friends

T

he Gustav evacuation may have brought an abrupt end to the Southern Decadence weekend this year, but it couldn’t dampen the spirits of the Decadent Ducks. A travel group and social organization, the Decadent Ducks brought over 300 revelers from all over the world to New Orleans for the festivities. Before the city was evacuated, the Ducks transformed their annual Welcome Party into a fundraiser for Food for Friends, a local organization that provides healthy meals and services to those living with HIV/AIDS. The Ducks raised over $2,000 for the charity through raffle sales and member donations. Southern Decadence XXXV Grand Marshal Paloma attended the event and welcomed the Ducks to New Orleans. Paloma is a frequent supporter of Food for Friends and suggested the organization to Decadent Ducks founder Troy Richardson. Troy said, “We had been hoping to do a benefit this year, so when Paloma suggested Food for Friends, it felt like the perfect fit for us.” The Decadent Ducks have been traveling to New Orleans for Southern Decadence for the past 11 years. Troy hopes to work with future Grand Marshals and make the fundraiser idea an annual tradition for the Ducks. No matter what the weather throws at New Orleans, the Decadent Ducks will be back. Troy said, “We can’t wait to come back. It was a shorter trip than usual this year, but we had a blast!” You can learn more about the Decadent Ducks at www.decadentducks.com.

Locker. Fresh off his collaborative success with The NOLA Project on What, Has Thing Appeared Again Tonight?, Fitzmorris is ready to fly solo again...doubtless just as intellectually dense, dizzying, and daring as always. As befits the presentation of a firstrank storyteller, the Voodoo is unembarassed to admit that it doesn’t know a damn thing of what Gusman/Hurt is about. (“About 45 minutes.” With no intermission.) “I tell a story where it seems that I’m explaining why I’m not going to do something that’s usually done in stories of that sort, only to find at the end I’ve done it anyway while the audience thinks I’m doing something else,” Fitzmorris explains, paraphrasedly speaking. We know Gusman/Hurt involves New Orleans politics and culture. We know it involves pain. More than enough. Runs Thursdays & Fridays 9pm, September 11 - September 26th at 718 North Rampart at Orleans, 504.304.1568, $10 admission.

t’s Sunday, August 31, and with the City of New Orleans under a mandatory evacuation due to the approach of Hurricane Gustav, there were very few people left in town. However, a small group had gathered at JohnPaul’s. All of a sudden the group realized it was 2pm, which should have been the start of the 35th Southern Decadence Parade, so the group did a Southern Decadence toast and celebrated the event with a bar crawl from JohnPaul’s to the Phoenix. JohnPaul’s and the Phoenix were the only two gay bars still open in the city. No grand marshals were in town, but all of the Susan Luccis on the crawl would have done them proud. the "official" dish ...from Main-4 tember 14 in Audubon Park. This year, NO/ AIDS hopes to raise $200,000 to assist the men, women and families that NO/ AIDS Task Force serves. Now in our 25th year of service to the greater New Orleans area, NO/AIDS is continuing to expand to meet the growing needs of the HIV affected population. We recently expanded our medical clinic which is now seeing three times as many clients as before Hurricane Katrina. And that number keeps growing. We see approximately 12 - 15 new clients every month. Additionally, we continue to offer help to those living with HIV and AIDS through services such as mental health, medications, housing, a food bank and meal delivery program and case management services. Our prevention education department is on the cutting edge of HIV prevention work, developing internet and chat based outreach programs with grants from the Centers for Disease Control. Of course we continue to do street and bar and venue-based outreach, and reach thousands each year through these efforts. NO/AIDS also recognizes the financial hardships that all AIDS service organizations face. As a result, NO/AIDS Task Force is once again offering an opportunity for other Louisiana-based AIDS service organizations to benefit from one of the largest AIDS fundraisers in the state. The Walk Share Grant Program allows other HIV/AIDS nonprofits providing direct services to keep 75% of all the money they raise for the Walk. Organizations who qualify to participate in this program can

contact NO/AIDS at 504-821-2601 ext. 218 or download the materials at www.noaidstaskforce.org. The NO/AIDS Walk is open to anyone who wishes to participate. You can register for the walk online at w w w.noaidswalk.com. You can fundraise and walk as an individual or gather friends, family and co-workers and form a team. Teams are our best fundraisers each year, and a great way to give back to the community while having fun at the same time. For businesses and organizations, teams are a great way to promote the work you do. “NO/AIDS encourages businesses to carry a banner, wear company shirts, carry signs or even dress up in costume. With over 3,000 people in attendance, plus people and businesses along the uptown route, it’s great advertising,” said T.J. Rogers, marketing coordinator, NO/ AIDS Task Force. This is NO/AIDS largest event of the year and the Walk takes the efforts of literally thousands of people to be successful. Volunteers are always needed and there are positions for everything from pre-walk office volunteers to registration, course monitors and food service. “Now in its 19th year, the NO/AIDS Walk continues to be our most important event each year. In addition to the funds raised to help those living with HIV disease, it’s an impressive demonstration of awareness and solidarity in the fight against AIDS in New Orleans,” says executive director Noel Twilbeck. “Every year, when I see that huge crowd of people stretching down Magazine Street, it’s overwhelming to know that so many continue

to support NO/AIDS and the thousands we serve after 25 years.”

obituary

W

illiam “Lewis” Routh, 59, was quietly called back in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 23, 2008, while sleeping at his home in New Orleans. Lewis is most fondly remembered as a playwright, producer, director and performer in theatrical companies in New Orleans and around the nation. He was also an accomplished short story writer, digital graphic designer and artist in the medium of acrylics on canvas. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on May 18th, 1949, of his parents Sam Routh and La Una “Lee” Ferguson Routh. His childhood was also greatly influenced by his maternal grandmother, Jewel “Dede” Brandt, of Texarkana, Texas. Lewis’ one true passion in life was theatre. Whether as a performer, director, producer or playwright, his commitment to the excellence of theatrical art was his driving force in life. He began his professional theatrical life at an early age as a ventriloquist, folk singer and dancer. He continued in his mid-teens touring the country professionally and performing in plays, musicals, cabarets and nightclubs. The first production of one of his own plays opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and starred the now-famous Alfre Woodard in her first performance. He also toured the United Kingdom in a production of West Side Story in the role of Riff. Later work included melodrama and vaudeville performances at the Iron Springs Chateau in Manitou Springs, Colo-

rado, and at the Heritage Square Opera House in Golden, Colorado, as well as at the Goldenrod Showboat in St. Louis, Missouri. Other professional and community theatre work was accomplished in Eureka Springs and Bull Shoals, Arkansas; Atlanta, Georgia, and Orlando, Florida, where in each city he owned his own theatre companies; San Francisco, California; Galveston, Texas; and New Orleans. Other highlights of his professional career of which he was most proud were being the Director of the 1998 May Fine Arts Festival in Eureka Springs, and receiving the Orlando Spectrum award for Entertainer of the Year in 1995. Lewis is survived by his life partner of thirty years, Marlin Haindfield, and by his mother, Lee Routh, both of New Orleans; a brother, Sam Routh, Jr., of Galveston, Texas; a half-brother, Ron Routh, of Houston, Texas; a half-sister, Mary Ellen Routh Bowman, of Little Rock, Arkansas; an aunt, Mary Routh Dickson, of Little Rock; an aunt, Laneda Routh, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a niece, Heather, of Nashville, Tennessee; 2 nephews, Eli and Lucas, of Nashville; a niece, Shannon, living abroad; 2 nephews, Michael and Isaac, of Houston; 2 nieces, Mary Ann and Sheryl, of Little Rock; and 5 grand-nieces and grandnephews. In accordance with his wishes, Lewis’ body was donated to the LSU School of Medicine. In lieu of a funeral service, a Celebration of Life gathering of family and his numerous friends is being planned. A memorial fund has been established to assist his partner and mother with final expenses. Donations are being

accepted online at LewisRouth.com, or by mail at Lewis Routh Memorial Fund, 3628 Franklin Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70122. Any residual funds will be used to benefit the New Orleans theatrical community. Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can. --Danny Kaye

Harrah's Host Benefit Gala for NOLA Great BJ Crosby

H

arrah’s New Orleans is paying tribute to New Orleans favorite, BJ Crosby (Lady BJ), by hosting “An Evening to Remember – A Benefit Gala for BJ Crosby” at Harrah’s Theatre, Saturday, September 20, at 7pm. Some of New Orleans’ finest musicians, singers, choirs and gospel groups are scheduled to perform. The confirmed lineup to date includes Grammy Award winner Irma Thomas, Germaine Bazzle, Leah Chase, John Boutte, Phillip Manuel, Barbara Shorts, Topsy Chapman, Caesar Elloie, Thais Clark, Yolanda Windsay, and Jolynda Phillips, as well as the nationally known Roz Ryan and Victor Cook. Organizers of the event, which is sponsored by Harrah’s, include a number of Lady BJ’s friends and relatives—Lawrence Sieberth, Gregory Davis, Mary Andry, Gilda Lewis, Vivian Crayton, Leslie Perrin, L. Bryan Francher, and Catherine Hill. A silent auction will precede the con-

cert. Silent auction items will be on display in the theatre’s foyer starting at 6 p.m. In mid-June, Lady BJ suffered a stroke on the right side of her body. The stroke left her partially paralyzed and unable to speak and sing. Since then she has regained some movement and can now speak, but not sing. All of the money raised from the event will go towards her recovery. “It is wonderful that so many of my peers are taking the time to come out and support me. I’m simply overwhelmed,” said Lady BJ. “I have worked with each one of these fine performers at some point during my career,” she added, promising that, “it’s going to be an incredible show. Great music just comes naturally to New Orleans singers and musicians.” For two decades, the New Orleans native has stunned audiences on theatrical stages and in jazz clubs around the globe with her sultry voice. In 2007, Lady BJ released “Best of Your Heart,” her first-ever solo album. It features original songs from Betty Carter, Joe Sample, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett. “Harrah’s New Orleans is pleased and privileged to lend our support to a New Orleans treasure,” said Jim Hoskins, senior vice president and general manager of Harrah’s New Orleans. “Lady BJ is truly a musical gem.” Contributions can be made to the “Friends of BJ Crosby” account at the Liberty Bank branch located at 3200 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA 70115. Reserved seating tickets are on sale now at $40 and $50 each, and may be purchased in person at Harrah’s box office or online at Ticketmaster.com. You must be at least 21 to attend shows at Harrah’s Theatre.

What, has This Thing Appeared Again Tonight? at Tulane’s McWilliams Hall Lab Theatre

J

im Fitzmorris’ expressionistic drama, What, has This Thing Appeared Again Tonight?, begins on the Danziger Bridge with James Bartelle and Sean Glazebrook. They and their fellow NOLA Project members have fanned out around the city looking for inspiration and ideas as they try to make sense of the tragedies that occurred in the aftermath of The Storm. “Oh, another Katrina play,” you think. But wait. The gentlemen have discovered a book, The Terrifying Tome of Terrible Things, that teases the NOLA Projecters and tempts them to figure out its meaning. They can ask its text, as embodied by Claire Gresham, questions but it sure helps if they have some idea of the answer beforehand else annihilation can result. With side trips to the lands of Hamlet and Thyestes, ...Tonight? explores what the artist’s place is in post-Katrina society (“Gutting homes or making art? You can only give what you have.”), paranoia, ghosts, panic, the search for knowledge, and terror using a format that is at once both Escherian and Borgesian. Think of The Blair Witch Project crossed with a graduate seminar on epistemology. With fine skill, Fitzmorris tailored his work to the talents and personalities of the

And as the Text of The Terrifying Tome of Terrible Things, Gresham was phenomenal, a wraith you wouldn’t want to mess with, in a role which in lesser hands could have been thuddingly bad. If Will Connolly, Andrew Larimer, Pete McElligott along with Allegra, Bartelle, Glazebrook and Tarwater were better at playing themselves than the characters in Hamlet and Thyestes, that is not necessarily not high praise. If ...Tonight? was a trifle obvious and certainly verbose (15 minutes less of it, particularly the Thyestes sections, would’ve added to its strength), the play was assuredly interesting and lots of fun. Some might think it impassioned, others overdone. An imaginative literary lecture or reminiscent of late night collegiate debates? Intellectually probing or pretentious ca-ca? I suspect Fitzmorris would welcome such a range of responses.

Vote October 4th

I

had the pleasure of interviewing Judge Darryl Derbigny on his run for re-election to the Criminal District Court. Traveling around town for these interviews isn’t always easy for me. Most of these men have offices downtown where parking is difficult and where they are most comfortable. Few are willing to drive out to Metairie to meet me at my home so that I can be comfortable. Judge Derbigny was one of the thoughtful who took time from his schedule to accommodate me. We sat in my kitchen over a pot of coffee and had a nice long visit. Derbigny, a native of the Seventh Ward, was elected to office in 2003 and has

served New Orleans with pride and distinction. In 2008, he was considered one of the top three Judges in Docket Performance. Derbigny has served the city as New Orleans City Attorney from 1978 to 1980. From 1980 until 1984, he was the Managing Attorney for the New Orleans Legal Assistance Corp. He opened private practice from 1984 to 1989 before service in the Orleans Indigent Defender Program through 1990. Derbigny’s service took him to Loyola Law School as a Clinical Professor and Ad Hoc Municipal Court Judge until 2003 when he was elected to the Criminal Court. The proud New Orleanian is the father of five adult sons. He is the seventh of

nine children so a large family was natural for him. He is a graduate of Jesuit High School and Tulane University School of Law. He taught in the Orleans Parish Public School system. His college studies took him to New York City, Columbia University, and Europe, L’Institut d’Etudes Francaises d’Avignon. Darryl Derbigny is another New Orleans success story. I found him to be personable and a delight to interview. On Gay issues, he rates 100%. Although he is a Roman Catholic, he believes in thinking for oneself. He believes in tolerance, love and acceptance. On abortion, he takes the stand that the decision is between the individual involved not the State. Government should not dictate. On Gay marriage, he says the government should stay out of the bedroom. It is about love and commitment, he said, not gender. On Gay adoption, he thinks that a stable and loving home is what is right for a child. The gender of the parents should not matter.

I believe in the separation of church and state, he told me. He thinks of himself as a tolerant, liberal thinker. He is not affiliated with political groups that would try to force their views on him. His love of travel and education has taken Derbigny to many places where the culture of all people has been an important experience to developing his caring and strong character. He also loves languages and speaks Spanish as well as having a slight understanding of other languages. He brings this knowledge and life experience to criminal court as an aid to justice and fairness. He takes a progressive attitude toward incarceration. He believes strongly in the Drug Core Program introduced by Judge Cannizzaro to rehabilitate the young and non-violent. He speaks with jurors to learn what the average citizen wants and needs from their court system. Judge Derbigny believes in public debate on issues and has with the citizens of New Orleans made a study for the legalization of marijuana on social and financial grounds. Judge Derbigny is experienced and respected. But what is most important is that his integrity is unquestioned. He asks for your vote on October 4th for re-election. He can be contacted through email at campaign@judgederbigny.com. His web site for more information is www.judgeberbigny.com or by calling 504.717.4830.

Gustav

I

guess we all have both funny and sad Gustav stories. I have a rather scary one but it was more from trying to help someone in need than from any storm. I also have a lot of great stories and I want to share a couple with you. As you know, Southern Decadence and hurricanes and my birthday fall one on top of the other most years. Gustav came and Southern Decadence went but my birthday was still a success with over a dozen calls from friends. Rip Naquin called to tell me that the Quarter had power and I should come down and spend the storm with them. I was grateful to know they were thinking of me. Your Orleans Parish State Representative Juan LaFonta called to make sure I was safe and invite Julie and me to sit at his table when he receives the award from the Forum for Equality. That was a great surprise and once again proves to me that he is a great and caring servant of the citizens of New Orleans. I don’t live in his District anymore but he still cares. I asked Juan what was going on in Baton Rouge and he was not at all happy about the way State Reps were treated by Jindal. Reps were not allowed to take part in planning or given updated information on the happenings in their Districts. Juan said that some of the Baton Rouge crowd calls Jindal, Baby Jesus, because of his attitude towards himself. Julie Thompson called me from Austin where she and her family relocated for a week. Julie’s daughter Karen lives in Austin and she never misses a chance to visit her grandsons. Paul Killgore called before leaving Sunday to assist his sister and her family in Baton Rouge. Randy Trahan spent four uncomfortable days at the Times-Picayune working but found time to check on me several times a day. And, of course, Many Stories, One Voice [continued on Main-18]

sappho psalm ...from Main-16 was postponed, and the national organizers checked on the local committee members. There were calls from New Jersey and New York, and everyone was concerned about how we were doing under the threat of Gustav and added a birthday wish for safety. Other than losing the contents of my refrigerator, having too much of my large Oak tree in pieces on the lawn, and having to eat my little birthday cake alone in the dark, this was not too bad as hurricanes and birthdays go. I lost five pounds; that’s great. The house is OK. Freddie is still my sweetest and best companion. Most of my friends have returned safely to their homes here in New Orleans and Metairie. I have a lot to be thankful for. If there was a personal downside during the power outage, it was that there was no US Open coverage for several days. The TV came back just in time for the dynamic match between the Williams sisters. Today is another wonderful day of tennis, the sun is bright, the A/C is keeping me cool and I am planning for my trip to New Zealand in ten days. Could life be any better?

e-mail/letters Subject: Hi Rip (from Ray Ruiz) Date: Friday, August 29, 2008 9:16 AM Hi Rip, We were just wondering— Has anyone thought of changing the annual dates for So. Dec. to Memorial Day weekend? Even tho it would compete with Pensacola, we think each attracts a different crowd. I don’t think there’s ever a hurricane threat at the end of May, but there seem to have been several ruinous, or near ruinous hurricane threats for Labor Day weekends. I can recall three of them. If not Memorial Day, then another perhaps... --Ray Ruiz

AM I just wanted to let the leaders of Southern Decadence know just what kind of stress you have caused in my life over the last few days. Because of your reluctance to cancel Southern Decadence, I am standing to lose over 1000 dollars in prepaid monies in hopes of enjoy the weekend without worrying about overspending. Additional monies had to be used just to get of the city on Saturday due to the Amtrak suspending all services forcing me to rent a vehicle to get home. We have been to Southern Decadence for the past 7 years with the exception of 2005 due to cancellation. More coordination between you and the city should of happened. Also, thanks to the city for never mentioning our people during these news conference since we did provide 1/5 of the city’s operating budget. Use your power to convince the Bourbon Pub to at least reimburse monies for the passes that most of us never got to use. I just don’t know if I can come back for another Decadence since this has caused me such loss of monies. --Robert L. Jordan

f Hurricane Gustav had not come our way, yesterday, Sunday, August 31st, would have been a giant 35th Southern Decadence Parade. Instead the City of New Orleans was under mandatory evacuation. Several of us locals who never leave for hurricanes stayed once again to ride out the storm. Our dear Billy came over to help us prepare for the storm at 9:30am. After boarding up the windows and dormers on the third floor of Ambush Headquarters from inside the building, it was time to tackle the second floor. First we removed the plants, pots and shelving from the balcony over the courtyard. Then it was off to the balcony overlooking Bourbon Street. Before tackling that balcony, we had to roll up the oriental rug under the dining room table and get it off to the side. Then we moved the dining room table up against the rug. From the balcony we removed five tables, two stands, eight chairs, two shelving units, forty-six potted plants, plant hangers, wind chimes, the mirrored centerpiece fleur de lis, and two lamp post. There was only enough room for a narrow walk through space in the dining room. Then we closed all of the shutters wiring them together to protect the walk through windows from flying debris. On the first floor we wired shut the shutters on the two windows on the front of the building. From there it was on to the courtyard. Here we opened up our slave quarter unit and placed eight chairs, a table and grill inside and closed the wooden shutters. In the breeze way, we moved all of the Ambush shipping boxes and furniture into the office on the first floor. We finally finished around 1pm. Sunday was a beautiful afternoon. Only two gay clubs remained opened that we're aware of in the entire city, JohnPaul's, 940 Elysian Fields, and the Phoenix, 941 [continued on Main-23]

Subject: The GOP’s discriminatory platform Date: Friday, September 05, 2008 2:26 PM Have you seen the Republican Party’s platform position on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”? It contains this plank: “To protect our servicemen and women and ensure that America’s Armed Forces remain the best in the world, we affirm the timeliness of those values, the benefits of traditional military culture, and the incompatibility of homosexuality with military service.” That’s right — this week at its national convention, the Republican Party once again made discrimination against lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members an official part of its vision for the United States. Join me in sending a clear message to the Republican leadership that this position is unacceptable. Sign this petition right away urging the Party to reconsider its position: http://action.sldn.org/incompatible. Thank you!

We met up with club owners John and Paul, Eva Las Vegas, Nicklaus and Wendy. All of a sudden we realized it was 2pm, which should have been the start of the Southern Decadence Parade, so we all did a SD toast and celebrated the event with a bar crawl to the Phoenix. At the Phoenix we found club owner Bobby Connell, bartender Marty, Marcos and a couple of other customers. We all celebrated SD here as well. No grand marshals were in town, but all of us Susan Lucci's would have done them proud. We headed home around 5pm to get inside before the outer bands of Gustav arrived. Around 8pm the winds picked up and in came some of the rain bands. The howling winds came more frequently around 10pm, and after watching the latest weather forecast, we felt the French Quarter and the East Bank of New Orleans would be spared the brunt of the storm. We decided it was time to turn in and get some sleep. We woke up around 6am when the electricity went out. It was time to turn on our battery operated TV and catch up on the weather updates. Gustav was making landfall almost exactly where it was expected to and was being downgraded to a Category 2 storm. After getting some essentials done, we headed down to our slave quarter unit which has a gas stove so we could make a pot of coffee. The main building is all electric except for the hot water heaters on the second and third floors. We had coffee in the breeze way and then had more on the stoop in front of the building on Bourbon Street. Then we saw them. The winds were slinging our neighbor Mary's giant avocados off her courtyard tree through the air over her home into the street. We scrambled and picked us up some. Can't wait till they're ripe. The winds calmed so we decided to take a walk down Bourbon past Johnny White's bar which was packed since it was the only drinking establishment open in the French Quarter. We turned on Toulouse and then on Royal for the walk back home. After some lunch, we decided to get the car out and head over to JohnPaul's. When we got to our off street parking lot, we thought we'd just be able to turn the key and push the electric gate open since there was no electricity. But no, that did not work. We went through the side pedestrian gate. Finally, Marsha figured we'd have to use the hand crank to open the gate. Once we got that done, we drove on out, and closed the gate once again. There was quite a crowd at JohnPaul's even though there was no electricity here either. The boys had prepared quite a cookout with hamburgers and hot sausage sandwiches courtesy of Gene's Poboys, pasta salad and an array of baked goods from Billy's Bites. Cocktails were flowing, and then the first responders began to arrive. John and Paul supplied all the eats they had and bottled water to members of the National Guard, New Orleans Fire Department and New Orleans Police Department. With all the first responders and all the bar patrons, the guys served up over 250 sandwiches. After all of this went on, it was almost 2pm when several of us realized it would have been the time for the Southern Deca-

A Time For Adjustment: Part Three

S

ince we skipped an issue for our Decadence issue, I will bring you up to date with a short synopsis of what took place in the last chapter of this series. In Part Two Kevin was walking through Jackson Square, when he spotted a young man apparently sleeping on a park bench, he didn’t think much on it but went on to eat. At the restaurant, the young man showed up and much to his surprise came in to eat and paid then left. After drinking a full bottle of wine, he weaved his way back towards his apartment. Drunk he ended sitting down on a bench with the same young man who introduced himself as Dale. Dale suggested that he should help Kevin home and maybe he could give him shelter for the night. Kevin found out Dale was eighteen and as he bragged he was not a hustler and knew his way around. Kevin agreed and so they went on their way. “Cool pad,” Dale commented half heartily as they entered Kevin’s cramped apartment. “My temporary abode,” Kevin stated

blandly. “If you want, I can stretch out on the floor so that I won’t bother you. Dale pointed towards the floor.” “I won’t hear of it, you are my guest after all, you take the bed,” Kevin replied “No way man, why don’t we share it, I promise you I’ll be good.” “But will I? That’s the real question.” “And the real answer? What would that be?” Dale smiled at him. “I’m not sure to tell you the truth.” “Well I’m willing to take a chance on it that is if you are.” He began to get undressed. “My dear young man, you may just be getting more than you suspect.” “I’m willing; I’ve never had too much before. He was out of his shirt and undershirt now and began to unbuckle his jeans. He slid them down showing his golden pubic hair; he was wearing no underware.” He caught Kevin staring at him with an unusual look on his face. He knew that look and just started to explain. “I never wear them, they’re to restricting. I like to hang free, as the expression goes.” Sliding his jeans down just a bit more to reveal the beginning of his shaft. Kevin smiled

broadly, it was very promising, he opened his mouth to say something, but no words came forth. It was the last thing he remembered seeing from the night before. When he opened his eyes once more it was daylight, and his brain contained no memory of the night that had passed. When he went to stretch out he realized that he had been securely entwined with the young man from the night before. What in the hell was his name, he tried to focus, something that started with a d, he thought. David? Denny? No, none of them rang a bell. He lay quietly, not wanting to move and awaken the man whose body engulfed his. Dale that was the name, it came to him in a flash along with the vision of him lowering his jeans just to the point of his starting to expose himself. But he never did see anything past that, but now he felt the hugeness of it pressed against his buttocks. I must have died last evening and woke up in heaven; this was the thought that crossed his mind. Dale move slightly turning his head to face Kevin, my Lord he looked awfully young, then he remembered Dale saying he was of legal age, he sure hoped it was true. Last night he could have honestly said he wasn’t responsible for what might have happened. But this morning was another story completely; he knew that as he felt himself begin to stiffen. Kevin pushed back hard against Dale’s erection, at the same time reaching for his hand and bringing it around to take hold of him. Dale made no move of resistance but grasped what was offered to him. “Nice piece.” He mumbled, or that’s what Kevin thought he heard, he couldn’t be sure. “You too.” He replied taking Dale in his hand. Dale sat up abruptly, startling Kevin. “What’s wrong?” Kevin asked reaching for him. “Got to relive myself, that’s all.” Dale leaned over and kissed him on the forehead. “Don’t lose that,” pointing at Kevin’s crotch, “I’ll be right back to take care of that.” “Don’t be to long.” “I won’t,” and he wasn’t he was crawling back into the bed before Kevin realized he was gone, he clutched something in his hand and on closer observation Kevin saw it was a couple of rubbers and an individual shot of lubricant. “Looks like someone is going to have a good time.” “You can bet your last dollar on that,” Dale said expertly sliding the protection on Kevin’s pole, and then squirting on the lube. “I’m going to take one hell of a hard ride.” He sat above Kevin and smiled down on him. “Here I come ready or not.” And with those few words he sat directly down engulfing Kevin with out so much as a whimper. Kevin was amazed with the agility and marveled at the fact that he was tight, clenching him inside hisself. Dale was not kidding nor bragging when he stated that he was going to take a hard ride. The energy that he put into this sexual encounter

almost exhausted his partner, just when he thought the guy was slowing down, he started up again, “I don’t think I can hold off much longer,” Kevin confessed. That statement only urged him to ride on faster and faster. He squeezed his sphincter so tight Kevin thought he was going to clamp him in two; he looked up into Dale’s face. Dale’s eyes were rolled back, his mouth wide open and his breathing was coming heavier and heavier, instinctively Kevin knew he was about to explode and when Dale did, Kevin let out such a loud moan he was sure they heard it a block away, and they reached their first climax together as one. Dale sat where he was for a good two minutes or so till Kevin naturally slid from him; he stretched out next to Kevin, smiling contentedly rubbing the older man's belly. “Well did you have a good time?” he was tweaking Kevin’s nipples. “You heard any complaints?” “I heard nothing actually. I thought I’d get a little bit of praise at least.” “You heard that moan? I’m sure they heard it two blocks from here, need I say more?” “If you want more,” “Right now? I don’t think I’m up to it just yet.” Kevin pointed down at his own crotch; he was definitely ready to go again. He smiled as he slid the remaining rubber on: from seemingly nowhere he produced another tube of lube and covered the protection with a thick layer. “You want to top or bottom daddy?” “I don’t think I could hold a candle up to that ride of yours, I’ll bottom. He rolled over on his stomach and relaxed as best he could. But it had been quite awhile for him and as Dale began to enter he tightened up making it more painful than it needed to be, causing the younger man to ask “are you cherry?” “Far from it. It’s just been a long time, that’s all.” “We can do this some other time if you’d rather? I mean, I’ll be around for awhile.” Kevin realized that Dale didn’t mean he would be here in this apartment, but rather in New Orleans in general. Kevin knew that less than twenty-four hours after first meeting that he wanted Dale to stay with him. He wanted to be his. He wanted Dale to be Kevin’s, but he wasn’t sure how to approach the subject. He gave a little laugh prompting Dale to ask what was so funny. “Lay down.” Was all he said and Dale did so. With determination he got above the young man and aping his actions earlier took the plunge with one painful seating. “I can hang with the best of them kid, and believe me when I say you are the best.” They spent most of the day taking turns topping one another and when the sun was about to set they showered together and finally got dressed. Dale started to pack his bag, but Kevin stopped him. “Leave it, we are just going out for dinner and then we’ll come back here. That is if you want to?” “Sure,” was all Dale said as they headed out down the street towards Jackson Square. They heard a woeful sax playing ONE LAST SONG before packing it in for the night. Capital City Highlights ~ Baton Rouge, Louisiana ~ Photos by Brad Benedict, Ben Woods

I

t’s been a rough time in historic old Red Stick. In fact, to be honest, it’s a mess up here due to Hurricane Gustav. Most of the city is without power, and that includes Spanish Town where I live. You know it’s bad when the State Capitol is without power. Some of the downtown area has power because of the underground power lines, but the city in general is suffering from the effects brought on by downed trees and utility poles. I went by the State Capitol this morning and took pictures of all the damage. It is a heartbreaking scene when you see the historic old Zachary Taylor live oak lying on the ground with the root ball uncovered. The former president’s home was nearby, and you have to wonder if he admired this moss-covered oak as much then as we do now. In addition to this scene, all the majestic magnolia trees are heavily damaged with many of them on the ground too. Spanish Town is practically cut off from the rest of the city. You have to zig-zag around to get to your home because of all the downed trees, especially along Spanish Town Road. I hear many of the big oaks over at the entrance to City Park have toppled onto homes too. With all of this and the constant sound of sirens, it is a time to wonder what the hell is going on.

With the curfew in place at 8pm and the complete darkness, it is best to stay in anyway. I laughed with my lawyer neighbor this morning. When I walked by his home, I saw all these empty shotgun shells in the street and thought I had slept through a major shoot-out. It seems that he was throwing away the spent shells, forgot the bag on the porch, and the storm scattered them in the yard and street. I have to admit, if I were a stranger walking by and saw this sight, I believe I would head in the opposite direction. When things in New Orleans were about to close down, my good buddy Tommy of Las Vegas, formerly of Eunice, stopped by to see me on the way to the airport to re-schedule and get out of Dodge. I suppose he made it, but I haven’t heard from him since then. He may have had his vacation cut short, but I did get to see that new trim body that he has. Those workouts and proper eating habits have really done the job for him. He is really a gorgeous guy to start with, but now he is a great piece of wonder eye-candy. My National Guard buddy John got notified on his way to New Orleans that he had to report for duty in Alexandria, so he [continued on Expose-18]

allons acadiana by Patrick Clinton Email: BlondAtULL@aol.com

I

t has been an interesting two weeks to say the least, but all has fared generally well here in Acadiana. And while Hurricane Gustav definitely did its share of damage, I am pleased to say both your favorite gay publication and Lafayette’s most popular gay nightspot are still intact. And while the cleanup may take weeks or even months, it is nice to know the Sound Factory and Back Side are back open and functioning at full capacity. And while for many of you this is a horrible time, think to the future, and keep your fingers crossed that Hurricane Ike goes the other way. And if you need a place to unwind or just take a break from the hectic world,

stop by Sound Factory or Back Side. It's your home away from home, and during these hectic times, its always good to know you have a trusted friend. It adds a sense of continuity to a world that sometimes seems out of control. For reasons I don’t completely understand, knowing karaoke will still be happening every Tuesday night somehow makes me feel like everything’s going to work out. Many of you have a long and difficult road ahead, but it will all come together, and the Acadiana gay community is here for you. We will persevere. Until next time, have fun and be safe. I’ll see you around Downtown.

I

am writing this five hundred miles from the city (New Orleans) I have fallen in love with and the people I count as family, and church. Leon and I, and a few of our church are in Atlanta, and I am beginning to understand the peculiar distress of being away from the place, people and church you love at a time when every emotion and urge says I should be doing SOMETHING. Of course, prayer and constant contact is pretty much the sum of what I am capable of in the face of Gustav howling away. From a spiritual point of view it is useful to contemplate the origins of the Christian religion, it was chaos - the great deep and the fearful storm that raged in the night that first inspired humanity to rest it’s fears on God’s changelessness. It was Behemoth, Leviathan and other ‘chaos monsters’ that haunt the Old Testament and first defined the power of the Almighty. People recognized that God had power over chaos, that The Spirit breathed over the waters and calmed the tumult, both in the deep and in the human heart. It is only when faced with elemental fury that we remember those origins – we can imagine a people, powerless and primitive seeking the God who had power over things they were helpless before. Humanity progressed from begging God to spare them from flood and famine to a deeper understanding that Christianity offers help even when overtaken by flood and famine. Christianity contains the strange paradox that nothing, not life, death, storm, fear, disapproval, prejudice, divorce, disease, or any other thing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus; all our life turns on this assurance - that all can be taken away from us and we can still have everything we need. Theology teaches that even the homeless beggar can be victorious in friendship with Christ – we do not require money or fame for success,

only love and compassion. I preached in church last week that loving those who love us is no test of virtue – we are called to love those who hate us; well, loving God and trusting God is no test when all the blessings are easily recognized - it is a test when the blessings are disguised as ferocious hurricanes! I have lurched between steely resolve, floods of tears and fervent prayer over the last few days; though intellectually I understand that I am in God’s tender care even when - ESPECIALLY when events do not coincide with my plans. What I now realize as I sit here in Georgia giving thanks that I have a home to return to is that Lafcadio Hearne was right. I am paraphrasing him when I say that even now, even amidst the debris and the disruption; the evacuations and the threat of storms to come, the life we have here is worth clinging on to, and the city we live in is worth all these trials to preserve.

Lafcadio Hearne

Yesterday we had a cook-out for our church folk that were up here in Atlanta, and we managed to take our minds off the weather channel for a few hours and relish each others company. A few people from New Orleans third ward who were staying over the road from us came by and

had to head back home. His two cohorts of the moment turned around and at least enjoyed a couple of days in the Crescent City before they had to come back home too. Holidays were cut short, but it could have been so much worse. I was more disturbed at the reports I was getting of all the major news media sources hovering over the levees as if they were really wanting them to break. As far as correct news reporting was concerned, I found the Weather Channel personnel to be the most accurate in reporting the facts. In fact, Jim Cantore said Baton Rouge was in for it right before my power went out. I’ll have to send him pictures and congratulate him and the rest of the weather crew for a job well done. Those other idiots who were waiting for the 9th Ward to get it again are not worth my time, and I’ll be very careful of how I watch news from now on. Here is something that you may find funny. Our local big newspaper didn’t think they would lose power, so they didn’t buy a generator. They missed out on covering the major news event of the season and possibly being in line for a Pulitzer Prize. The capital city looks like a war zone, and they had to get a pitiful excuse of a newspaper printed in Lafayette. Shame on those in control! I did get to see my good buddy Tommy who stopped by on his way to the airport to re-schedule his flight out of here. He got to enjoy three days of fun in the Crescent City, and I’m sorry it was cut short, but I do appreciate him stopping by to see me. And he looks great. All that good eating and exercise has created a beautiful body. He was a great looking guy to begin with, and now he is a man of perfection – absolutely magnificent. I love you Tommy. Someone else I care about a lot is my National Guard buddy John, who got the call for duty while on his way to New Orleans for Decadence. He had to turn around and head to Alexandria, and I suppose he is still there. I haven’t heard from him since he called on his way to duty. His buddies Colla and Phil dropped him off here and headed back for the couple of days they had before being run out because of Gustav. I haven’t heard from we had a New Orleans reunion for a few hours. For three or four hours I could forget I was in exile and pretend I was still in the tender embrace of New Orleans. I am a newcomer, but have an intense connection to the city I have made my home. I have traveled all over the world, lived in London and Los Angeles and know many of the world’s great cities but have never found anywhere even vaguely like NOLA. NOLA may be a slightly louche old lady who smells a little, and who’s glory is faded round the edges, but she is still a very grand old lady, who is happy to befriend all manner of eccentric and outsider. I intend to cling to her company as long as I can, and thank God for every day I spend with her. Rev. Clinton Crawshaw is the Pastor of The Big Easy Metropolitan Community Church in New Orleans. They meet every Sunday at 5pm at 1333 S. Carrollton Ave. NOLA 70118 – ring or e-mail for details. pastor@bigeasymcc.com, 504.214.4340 or visit www.bigeasymcc.com.

either of them, but Tommy did say he ran into Colla while out on the streets. BC Boy lost his apartment to a fallen tree. Out of the entire complex, it was his unit that got crushed. He has been on EMS duty since last Friday but has lost everything. All the water soaked his apartment. I am going to join him later at Hound Dogs for a cool one. He was unable to get to my house to check on me, but the thought was there and it is appreciated. Things are hopping here in the capital city. There are lots of cookouts to get rid of frozen foods, but it is not a good time like you might normally see. Under the circumstances, it’s a little on the tough side. However, everyone seems to be grinning and bearing it under the current situation. Hound Dogs is offering a place to recharge cell phones and laptops, and they are offering a cool place to have a drink and think of better days. I haven’t been able to get over to George’s, and Splash isn’t open today. I’ll have to catch you up on them later. Right now, I have to sweat it out and pray for a speedy return of power to cool this place off. I do have a gas stove and water heater, so that is nice. However, I’m in no mood to cook. I’ll make do with what I have and hopefully will find some places open that are serving up some good food. I want to thank Ben Woods again for helping me with pictures, especially from Splash. I plan to keep working with him and sharing the credit on the picture page. I have been wanting to sit down with him so I could tell you a little bit about him, but that hasn’t happened either. It will come with time. I’ve got bits and pieces of data on him, but I would prefer to meet him up close and personal before putting anything down in writing. I’m anxious to get back out to see what’s going on, but right now, things just aren’t that pleasant. I’ve been doing the Jimmy Buffett thing lately. I have had a few drinks and thought to myself that it’s 5 o’clock somewhere, and thank goodness for the personal stash of liquor. It’s just not the same however with all the rain and the mess that Gustav brought our way. It’s depressing sitting on the porch and looking at the devastation in my tropical garden, and it’s even more depressing when I come in the house to find it so dark. I trust all of my friends in Lafayette are okay. I haven’t heard from anyone there. As soon as I can, I’ll get Sam to ride over there with me to check things out. I’m hoping my favorite restaurant with those wonderful crab cakes was not damaged. It’s located in Abbeville and well worth the drive over just for the crab cakes. I wish I had some right now. Pat’s Seafood Restaurant in Henderson was where Sam and I stopped last week, and I discovered some bread pudding that was almost as good as that served at Deanie’s in Buck Town. As you can tell from my writing, I’m looking forward to better days. In the meantime, I’m going to cut this one short this week. I don’t want the battery on the laptop to play out before I save this copy. Until next time, I’m hoping this finds you healthy, happy and ready to take on the world. I certainly am. Well, the sirens are blaring again, so I have no idea what is going on. I am working on battery power now on my laptop and hopefully can find a source where I can send this on to Ambush Headquarters.

Southern Renegades Leather Contest, Highlights, Club Action ~ Mobile, Alabama

ello Mobile Alabama Pride Supporters! I would like to invite everyone to attend the Pride meetings and meet the 2008/2009 Mobile Alabama Pride Board and see the events that are in store for this exciting year! The meeting dates through the end of 2008 are as follows: October 7 ~ 6:30pm, November 4 ~ 6:30pm, and December 2 ~ 6:30pm, all at B-Bob’s These are the events that Mobile Alabama Pride has planned for the 2008/ 2009 season: The Fall Carnival (new to Mobile Alabama Pride this year!) The date is set for Saturday, September 20th from 8 - Midnight! If you have not signed up with a Pride board member or Elvin at Gabriel’s and would like to participate, please contact us soon. We are trying to not duplicate games and there are still some great ideas for fund-raising booths available! There will be a “Live” Band, A Side Show/Freak Show, Dunking Booth and other carnival games provided by community groups and organizations of Mobile! The Camp Chili Cook-Off date of November 8th has been set and will be held in Spanish Plaza from Noon until 5pm. The Holiday Wreath Auction date is TBD. The Pride of the Southeast Conference (POSE) is March 20-22nd, 2009. The Pride Parade and the Pride Festival in the Park is set for April 17 -19th 2009. All of these events are designed to unite the community together for activities. These events are also designed as Fundraisers for the biggest, most costly events of the year: Pride Parade, Pride Festival in the Park and this year, Pride of the Southeast Conference (POSE). Our budget has been increasing by 30 - 40% each year and our attendance has been increasing at about the same rate. In years past the City of Mobile has donated stages and barricades for our events. We have just been informed that due to budget cuts, etc. that we will now have to start paying fees to use these items. I anticipate that the same rule will apply with the City of Mobile this year when we get our permits for the parks and schedule the parade. This should be a very exciting year for Mobile Alabama Pride (MAP)! Besides the events of the past years, MAP has won the bid to host the POSE conference. We anticipate 200 delegates from Pride organizations in the Southeast U.S. and their spouses/significant others visiting our city in March 2009! The Mobile Alabama Pride bowling fall league will begin October 13th. If you are interested in joining a team or bringing your own team, come to the Florida St. Lanes in Midtown Mobile at 7pm. The teams are 4 players each and there are 10 teams. Come if you are interested even if you don’t have a team. This is a great way to contribute to Pride! The Mobile Alabama Pride bowling league is the single largest contributor to the Pride Festival in April!
