Historic Characters to Greet Guests at World Cultural Economic Forum Oct. 25-26

H

istoric Characters from Louisiana’s history will greet guests at The Riverwalk October 25, 26, from 3-5 pm for Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu’s opening reception at the Convention Center for the World Cultural Economic Forum October 30, 5-7 pm. The Louisiana Living History Project will provide four Historic Characters in full period costumes to stroll and entertain visitors in the Riverwalk Marketplace and six Historic Characters to visit the World Cultural Economic Forum opening reception in the Convention Center in New Orleans. This project brings Louisiana history alive for visitors and locals. The characters exemplify the use of cultural heritage for special events as a way of educating and entertaining visitors and locals. Actors in authentic costumes portray actual historic characters, they are knowledgeable about their time period and our region’s social, cultural and political history. In Louisiana, culture means business. To leverage the state’s unique heritage and to ensure that it remains the driving force and embodiment of a global cultural economy, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, together with the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism, is working to expand this new initiative: the World Cultural Economic Forum (WCEF). The WCEF highlights Louisiana’s unique cultural assets and positions the state as a leader of this emerging cultural economy movement. The mission of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is to preserve and enhance Louisiana’s unique heritage and natural landscape; provide cultural, infor-mational, and recreational resources; and promote the use of these resources for Louisiana’s diverse citizens and visitors. The Department’s five agencies—Tourism, State Parks, Cultural Development, State Museums, and the State Library—work together to make educational resources available, conserve and interpret Louisiana’s history, support the arts and develop recreational opportuni-

ties. The Department also fuels economic growth through tourism, operates programs which generate tax revenues, and provides a stable, non-polluting source of outside income for the state. This project is supported by a grant from the Office of the Lt. Governor, the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, and the World Cultural Economic Forum (WCEF). Historic characters include: THOMY LAFON - Philanthropist, 1810 -1893; JEAN LAFITTE The Gentleman Privateer, 17801825; BARONESS PONTALBA - Developer, 1795 -1874; MARIE LAVEAU (aka The Widow Paris) - Spiritualist/Herbalist/ Social Activist, 1783 -1881; GEN. ANDREW JACKSON – Hero of the Battle of New Orleans 1767-1845; SISTER HENRIETTE DELILLE - Founder, Sisters of the Holy Family, 1812-1862; and JOSIE ARLINGTON – Storyville Madam 1864-1914. The WCEF appearance by Historic Characters will be a preview of their December season in the French Quarter. 2008 will be the twelfth year for The Louisiana Living History Project under the auspices of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc. The project’s fiscal agent is Efforts of Grace (dba Ashe Cultural Arts Center). Costumed characters developed from Louisiana history appear in salon and tableau during the month of December at a variety of locations in New Orleans historic French Quarter, entertaining and educating visitors and locals with tales, songs and dances from the multi-cultural northern capital of the Caribbean in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The members of the Living History company are well trained professionals and not just actors in costumes. They become the characters they portray and are accomplished at creating intimate street theatre. The goal is to achieve a reverse Williamsburg effect, with the actors never breaking “character” while on duty. They hold Salons in hotel lobbies that allow for solo performances, and opportunities for the characters to tell their individual stories to their audience, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the characters as real people. The cast will appear on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the month of December. The cast begins each work day with a salon in the lobby of the Hotel Monteleone at 11am. They can be seen in Jackson Square, The French Market, at museums and historic homes, strolling Royal and Chartres Streets and in French Quarter and Canal Street hotel lobbies. They will also appear courtesy the magic of Papa Noel on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day greeting those celebrating mass at the St Louis Cathedral and posing for photos in Jackson Square.

Say Yes! to Literacy Celebrity Waiter Luncheon Rescheduled to Oct. 29

T

he first annual Say Yes! to Literacy Celebrity Waiter Lun cheon has been rescheduled due to Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Harrah’s New Orleans will be hosting the event with the YMCA Educational Services Branch (YES!) on Wednesday, October 29 at Harrah’s Theatre, from 11am to 1pm. WDSU-TV news anchor Roop Raj and local actor Chris Lane will co-emcee

the event. Celebrity waiters include Inspector General Robert Cerasoli, television personality Nikki Reyes, her sister and WGNO-TV anchor Liz Reyes and King of the Krewe of Cork Patrick Van Hoorebeek. The celebrity waiters will compete against each another to provide the best service and earn the most tips from guests for this worthy cause. “Our goal is to raise awareness about the links between rampant illiteracy and high crime, high poverty and lackluster economic development in the New Orleans area,” said Amy Brown, executive director of YMCA Educational Services. “Illiteracy is an issue that affects the quality of life of every New Orleanian. As a provider of adult basic education, YES! seeks to give adults the basic skills to improve their quality of life by increasing access to jobs that pay a living wage with health-care benefits, the possibility of home ownership and access to higher education.” “As one of the city’s top employers, Harrah’s New Orleans has a strong commitment to adult education,” said Jim Hoskins, general manager of Harrah’s New Orleans. “We offer countless opportunities to our employees to continue their education, from free on-site computer classes to reimbursing them up to 90 percent of their tuition expenses for college-level courses. We are therefore pleased to partner with YES! to extend adult learning opportunities to the wider community.” Tickets are $100 each and may be purchased by calling Amy Brown at 504.568.9622 or emailing her at amyb@ymcaneworleans.org. Auction items will include drawings for various prizes including dinner for two prepared at home by Chef Melody Pate, a gift basket with Terrence Blanchard CDs and tickets to see Blanchard perform with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in February 2009 and a tour of the WDSU studios with Roop Raj and a behind-thescenes look at the noon live news broadcast. To reserve your tickets, or for questions, contact the NOMA Volunteer Committee at 504.658.4121 or nvcnoma@noma.org. This winter, the New Orleans Museum of Art presents Objects of Desire: Fabergé from the Hodges Family Collection-featuring a selection of the famed Easter eggs, as well as sculpture, jewels, smoking accessories and other precious objects by Peter Carl Fabergé-on view from November 9, 2008 through January 18, 2009. The Hodges Family Fabergé Collection currently includes 106 diversified objects, a number that continues to grow as Louisiana resident D. Lee Hodges amasses one of the world’s premier sets of Fabergé. Since 1983, the Fabergé gallery at the New Orleans Museum of Art has been one of the most visited sites within the nearly 100-year-old building. With the relocation of the Matilda Geddings Gray Foundation Collection of Fabergé to the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art in Nashville in 2007, the Museum was faced with the daunting prospect of either replacing that Fabergé material or of regretfully closing the popular gallery. At that point, D. Lee Hodges realized that the Museum was in dire need of assistance and generously offered to place his collection of Fabergé works on extended loan, an offer made all the more remarkable by the fact that Dr. Hodges was a Louisiana collector of whom the Museum had heretofore been unaware.

Art for Arts Sake: Three Women at New Orleans’ Ogden Museum

T

he Ogden Museum of Southern Art is presenting the work of three female artists—each of whom have carved a distinct niche in the national and regional art worlds: Sally Mann, Margaret Evangeline and Lisa

Silvestri in Art for Arts Sake. Sally Mann: What Remains features photography from Mann’s larger project and book of the same name. The haunting images offer a five-part meditation on mortality from this Virginia-based artist. Challenging the notions of love, death and memory, Mann’s photographs feature the Antietam Battlefield, her children, and the process of decomposition, rendered in a 19th-century photographic process. Silver Bullets and Holy Water: Paintings by Margaret Evangeline showcases paintings that are striking, conceptual, complex and often multilayered. “Margaret Evangeline’s work is an art of delicate sensibility. From her student days at the University of New Orleans, to her recent return to painting on canvas after several decades of working with metal panels,

her paintings betray an ongoing concern with complex surfaces that are at once subtle and expressive. In an effort to skirt the boundary between control and intuition, she often invents experimental techniques or uses unorthodox painting materials,” says Ogden’s chief curator David Houston, who organized this exhibition. Lisa Silvestri The New Orleans Portrait Project: The John McDonogh Series features black and white photographs of students at John McDonogh High School in New Orleans. These photographs are just a portion of Silvestri’s images taken after Hurricane Katrina. Silvestri, a resident of New York, returned to her native New Orleans after the storm to record the “Invisable part of the population; to make them visiable and celebrate them.” The exhibitions run through January 4, 2009.

M

iracle on Fulton Street, a holiday attraction in the heart of downtown New Orleans, will bring the magic of the season alive for locals and visitors of all ages starting Friday, November 28. This free and open to the public event will open at 10am daily, through January 4. This year, Miracle on Fulton Street is sure to enchant guests with two winter wonderland tunnels, complete with Santa and his live reindeer, a giant gingerbread house, snow, strolling costumed characters, top local performers and holidaythemed dining. “Miracle on Fulton Street puts locals, visitors and their loved ones in the spirit of the holiday season,” said Jim Hoskins, senior vice president and general manager of Harrah’s New Orleans. “We are pleased to bring back this delightful winter wonderland and make it a New Orleans tradition for years to come.” The entrance to the attraction, located at Fulton and Poydras Streets, will be defined by a series of custom-built, faux wrought iron arches, accentuated by 12foot Christmas trees and 3-foot fleur de lis ornaments. The arches will create a dramatic canopy illuminated by thousands of LED lights. A computerized system will enable lighting technicians to create varied color themes against the backdrop of arches, ornaments and trees. ‘Faux snow’ will be another highlight of the attraction. Periodic snowfalls, while extremely rare in New Orleans, are nonetheless ‘forecast’ for Fulton Street this holiday season. Whether naughty or nice, all are welcome to enjoy the beautiful decorations and festivities. Live entertainment will take place on Fulton Square on Fridays and Saturdays from 4-8pm and on Sundays from 3-6pm. Performers will include New Orleans favorites Charmaine Neville, The Wiseguys, Wanda Rouzan and A Taste of New Orleans, The Top Cats, The String Beans and Benny Grunch & the Bunch. Strolling carolers and choral groups including A Merry Tuba Christmas are also scheduled to perform. Santa’s Shop will sell official Miracle on Fulton Street merchandise, including commemorative ornaments, apparel, bells, coffee mugs and much more. Holiday drinks including Cajun egg nog, hot cocoa and hot toddies will also be on sale. Santa, as well as his live reindeer, will be

Miss Saigon at Rivertown Rep

N

ot a few eyebrows were raised when Rivertown Rep announced they were going to be doing Miss Saigon, Alain Boubil & Claude-Michel Schoenberg’s retelling of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (which was itself adapted from David Belasco’s Madame Butterfly) set in the era of the Vietnam War. If “The helicopter, how’re they gonna do the helicopter?” was a valid question, an even more pressing one was how were they gonna cast this challenging show with its multi-racial cast. Well, never underestimate the imagination and talents of New Orleans’ theater folk. Despite a few quibbles, this Miss was a worthy production that captured the audience’s attention and didn’t let go for two and a half hours. Coming after Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon was the third of the British blockbusters to reach Broadway. Superior to Phantom’s pap, it lacks Les Miz’s narrative sweep and range of detailed characters. But enough good songs (Sun and Moon, Last Night of the World, and its 11 o’clock number, The American Dream) poke out from the otherwise vanilla score so that, combined with Belasco’s still-absorbing tale and the passions that that ill-advised war continues to elicit, Miss Saigon makes for an eminently entertaining and thoughtprovoking evening of theater. Roland “Butch” Caire’s excellent direction gave this production a cinematic flow. The two big production numbers (The Heat is On in Saigon and Bangkok) were visually wonderful, the stage filled with a swarm of action but never feeling cluttered. Caire’s musical direction was also fine, giving the show the propulsive quality of fate. As Kim, the Butterfly of Miss Saigon, Alexis Bruza’s glorious voice and trusting, passionate portrayal ennobled Kim and made her a true tragic heroine. Daniel deShazo made a suitably white bread Chris, Kim’s Pinkerton, which is not a bad thing as it’s his naivete and innocence in thinking everything can turn out all right that sparks the tragedy. And Vatican Lokey imbued The Engineer, Kim’s pimp who hopes to use her to obtain an American visa, with a superbly assured, demonic presence, making him a survivor at all costs. Quibbles? The large chorus performed admirably, but tended to make mush of Richard Maltby, Jr.’s lyrics, which might not be such a bad thing as the original French ones seemed to have lost something in translation. Bruza too often reminded one of a silent screen actress; she needs to learn to trust her instincts and not “act” so much. DeShazo, though possessing a fine voice, had a tendency to go flat on his big notes. Lokey could have brought just a touch more pathos to The Engineer, a Eurasian caught in a no man’s land between two cultures (better make-up might’ve helped as it was not

entirely clear just from looking at him of his character’s mixed ethnic background). I also wish he had been able to build The American Dream a bit more; he started the number on such a high energy level that he had nowhere to go with it. For this, Caire must share the blame as well. Lastly, I would’ve preferred if there had been more Asians in the cast to convey the different-ness that confronts the American characters in Viet Nam, but that’s a significant challenge in this city where some talented Vietnamese opted not to participate given the nature of the show’s characters. Fortunately, those cast members of Asian heritage gave the production a vital authenticity.

Overall, Rivertown’s Miss Saigon mesmerizing whole was greater than the sum of its not inconsiderable parts (which included Christopher Ward’s set, Alex Caire’s costumes, Terrance Holloway’s lighting, Jaune Buisson’s choreography and the entire rest of the cast that space constraints prevent me from naming) and augurs very well for future productions there. And, yes, they pulled off the helicopter quite well. As for the accompanying buffet, if Andy Messina’s did not provide an Asianthemed repast, the lemon chicken, pecan catfish, penne pasta with ground beef, andouille & chicken gumbo, and green bean almondine were all yummy.

Die! Mommy! Die! at Le Chat Noir

I

t’s been said that Die! Mommy! Die! is Charles Busch’s homage to divas of the silver screen and those vehicles that kept them stars after their expiration date had passed. Per-

haps. But might it not also be his reinterpretation of Hamlet? After all, there’s a paterfamilias dead under mysterious circumstances; a troubled child, okay two, trying to discover the true doer of the dirty deed; a wife/mother implicated in the sordid crime; and a hoary maid who knows a thing or two. A maid? In Hamlet? Okay, so maybe D!M!D! isn’t Busch’s tribute to the Bard. Doesn’t matter if he’s sending up Shakespeare or Bette Davis, D!M!D! is a lot of fun. Set in 1967 Los Angeles, D!M!D! tells the tale of Angela Arden (Brian Peterson), a glamourpuss and erstwhile songbird, and the former film king of her husband, Sol P. Sussman (Bob Edes, Jr.). They have two kids, Edith, a kiss-him-on-the-lips daddy’s girl (Dorian Rush), and Lance, a mama’s boy-cum-fagelah (Dwayne Sepcich). Angela has aspirations of a comeback plus a tennis pro (Leon Contavesprie) on the side. Sol is running from the Mob. Complications ensue. And

trodding the boards ...from M-14 what about that maid (Jack Long)? D!M!D! has lotsa Hollywood in-jokes that the American Movie Channel crowd, especially those who have seen Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? 169 times, are sure to get. But if D!M!D! is like a vintage car, or starlet, like a vintage car, or starlet, it takes a while to get going. Though Busch is loving in his recreation of the atmosphere of 1950/60s “women’s” pictures, the first act is mostly build-up to the yucks, and there are many, that are finally delivered in Act Two. Fortunately, under its sure-handed if uncredited direction, the Running With

Laughing Wild at Actor’s Theatre New Orleans

hen Christopher Durang’s Laughing Wild debuted in 1987, it was derided as not really a play but two long monologs and a skit pasted together. Harrumph! In the two decades since its premiere, this tragicomedy a la Beckett has, for the most part, proven to be more durable than many other plays of that era and continues to entertain. In it, Woman (Elizabeth Skinner Gore) and Man (Robert Facio) meet un-cute in the tuna section of a supermarket. As their lives subsequently zig and zag in and around taxis, street musicians, self-help groups and each others’ dreams, a double portrait emerges of two overly sensitive people trying to work through the pain of living and succeeding intermittently. Durang’s observations about the destruction of the ozone layer, our over-dependence on sugar, and what to do with unaborted children, among many other zingers, are just as cogent today as 20 years ago. And anyone who doesn’t share Brian Peterson and Bob Edes, Jr. Man & Woman’s existential in DIE! MOMMY! DIE! angst in these post-9/11/ Scissors crowd milked D!M!D!’s humor Katrina times probably doesn’t have a to fullest effect turning out a pitch-perfect heartbeat. Laughing does feel slightly dated in production that, though its tongue was firmly in its cheek (among other places), its references to Sally Jessie Raphael never descended into mere campy mug- and Mother Theresa, and it sags in Man’s second act monolog when passages ging. D!M!D! needs a volcanic leading lady about gays and AIDS feel so passé that and got one in Peterson’s spot-on perfor- they’re not even interesting from an hismance. Not only does he have a priceless torical perspective. Certainly, Laughing Wild is a tough way with a line, giving every syl-la-ble its due, but by omitting double and triple show to pull off and, happily, the Actor’s takes, delivered an even more incisive Theatre of New Orleans largely did so. While keeping the tone right on the portrait than Busch who created the role on stage and screen. Ventriloquist Verses at Alamo Underground

I

had not seen Diana E.H. Shortes perform in a while when I saw her just after Gustav in Ventriloquist Verses. Seeing her in this original multimedia work, I was reminded just how important a member she is of the New Orleans theater community. With her incredible instrument, she can seamlessly shift from highly oratorical to conversational speech. She has the presence of a youthful queen or high priestess, and her body has the litheness of a cheetah. I hope to some day see her as Medea or Lady Macbeth. Written by Shortes and billed as an “exploration of loss, forgiveness and the search for identity in post-Katrina New Orleans,” Verses covered a lot of territory in its 55 minutes (Shortes’ Katrina experiences, her family history, local history, race relations, the role of women, etc., etc.); I wish Shortes had chosen one or two or three of these topics and explored them in more depth. Parts of Verses are aptly poetic (“liquid landscape,” “heat slows everything”),others a bit overripe (“the water no longer looks like water but smells of the sweat of slaves). What with its chanting in foreign languages, Verses flirted with pretentiousness but was saved by Shortes’ total commitment and hypnotic intensity. Jeff Zielinski’s musical accompaniment added greatly to Verses’ overall haunting quality and propelled the narrative along.

He Loves and She Loves at Le Chat Noir

L

istening to 30 or so Gershwin songs sung well is not a bad way to pass an hour. And yet... He Loves and She Loves, a George (music) and mostly Ira (lyrics) revue, featured Amy Alvarez and Jefferson Turner on the piano. To its credit, it was polished but never slick. Alvarez displayed her lovely personality and pretty voice. Nothing wrong with that. But every number was done in either perky or contemplative mode and, after a while, they all began to kinda sound the same. Not till the penultimate I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise, did Alvarez connect viscerally with a song. Alvarez knows she’s no Merman but can get away with an I Got Rhythm. Rather, she casts herself in the style of Dinah Shore, Rosemary Clooney and Doris Day. Fine. But for a cabaret act like this to be fully successful, Alvarez needs to take bigger chances. I wish there had been some emotional rawness in at least one song. Or a different style of arrangement like classical or rap. Or disco. Or something. If Ira’s words are by turns classically elegant and witty, it is fair to expect a cabaret performer to bring something new to at least some of them, a humorous reinterpretation perhaps. Instead, He Loves, with the exception of Fidgety Feet, lacked the directorial flourishes we’ve come to expect from its ever inventive director, Ricky Graham. Contrary to Kander & Ebb, life doesn’t always have to be beautiful in a cabaret. Like Elaine Stritch and Eartha Kitt, I hope in the future Alvarez won’t be afraid to let

some of her bumps and rough edges show.

Metropolitan Opera HD Live/ Opening Night Gala at AMC Elmwood Palace 20

O

pera afficionados take note— you no longer have to go to New York to attend the Metropolitan Opera. With the Met’s HD Live presentations now showing at the AMC Elmwood Palace 20 in Harahan, a short drive is all it takes to hear some of the world’s most glorious music. For the recent Opening Night Gala, the stadium seating was nearly full with some patrons in black tie, others very casual. When Maestro James Levine took the podium people applauded. One or two candy wrapper rattlers excepted, it was a very attentive audience. As fine as Met TV broadcasts have been in the past, this wide screen/high definition approach is incredible as it allows you to feel as though you’re right on the stage. And if not quite the same as hearing it live, the sound is as good as you can hope it to be. Plus you get to eat popcorn while watching. The Opening Night Gala itself was sublime with Renée Fleming featured in acts from La Traviata, Manon and Capriccio. In addition, Diva Susan Graham made a fine hostess leading pre-Gala interviews and behind-the-scenes peeks. She was ably assisted by fellow Diva Deborah Voigt speaking with people who were viewing the performance in Times Square. Fortunately, two 15 minute intermissions with nothing occupying the screen allowed for pottie breaks. Next up live (October 11) and repeated (October 22), Karita Mattila losing all seven veils—and everything else—in Strauss’ Salome.

Esoterotica at Voodoo Mystére

O

n Friday nights in the back room of the Voodoo Mystére with its trompe l’oeil library setting, a worthy series has emerged filling a unique niche in NOLA’s literary/theatrical scene. Using only a chair and a lamp sitting on a black cloth-covered stool, Esoterotica features bedtime stories for adults read by local luminaries to an audience lolling on chairs and pillows. It began in August with Dane Rhodes reading the S&M themed I Once Had a Master and has continued with other memoirs of a sexual nature. A few weeks ago, I caught boyish Ryan Bruce doing JT Leroy’s Sarah. This is the supposedly “true” story about the girlyboy truck stop prostitute that turned out to be a big hoax. Bruce did a nice job of bringing the various characters to life but needs to learn that ragout is pronounced “ra-goo” not “rag-out”. Voodoo impresario Michael Martin is to be commended for starting this series though he needs to learn how to turn off the music making machine which proved to be a bit of a distraction. I suspect, however, after a few cocktails nothing will be much of a distraction. Here’s hoping lots of people will learn to head towards the Voodoo Mystére Lounge on Friday nights at 10:30 for this recherché entertainment.

I

lost one of my dearest friends on Wednesday, October 1st, when Steve Mettner passed away. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 1, 1942, he had a most varied career having served in the United States Coast Guard, having been a play-by-play radio sportscaster for a Midwest minor league baseball team, having been a maitre d’ at Brennan’s Restaurant here in New Orleans, and then the successful business owner of the Quartermaster Deli. Steve was such a witty, humorous and caring man who never said no to a friend in need or to any charitable organization in the GLBT community that called upon him. I enjoyed all the times we travelled together to Montreal, all his many visits to my business, The Corner Pocket, and all my visits to what he thought was his greatest accomplishment in life, the Quartermaster Deli. To my good friend, Steve, I would say, that your greatest accomplishment in life was your neverending generosity. You will always have a special place in my heart, a place now filled with wonderful memories of my dear friend. —Michael Elias

M

y friend Steve will be sadly missed, but I will forever cherish the great times we shared together throughout our travels out of the country. For all of those who didn’t know him personally, you couldn’t have asked for a more kinder, witty and more generous man. Steve, paint the gates of heaven a sage green for me, and I will see you when I get home. Forever Your Friend, —Ashlee

Apple Harvest Time

W

ell as hard as it is to believe, we have finally gotten a touch of fall. Albeit it is early for us, it is certainly more than welcome. The humidity has fallen, pollen count is down and the mornings have cooled off quite a bit. Though the sun is still high in the sky and the temperatures climb in the afternoon, but then who is to complain? The breeze is out of the north and comfortable. It is fall and in the northern states the harvest is in full swing, and one of the bounties of this season is the apple. Apples are beyond a doubt my very favorite fruit, aside from my significant other of course. The apple can be and is used in the most delightful ways, and I offer you now some of my favorite ways of eating my second favorite fruit.

’m baccccck! After 48 hours (round trip) sitting in airports and being wedged into the economy class of airplanes, you might think that I was sorry to have made the commitment to visit Dr. Amy in Wellington, New Zealand. You would be very, very wrong. This was the best trip that I have ever taken and that includes Wimbledon and a dozen trips to the theatre district in NYC. For friendliness and good food, Italy is a close second. For awesome beauty, the Grand Canyon is a close second. For

diversity, no place comes close. It would take four days of driving across America to see all that you can see in four hours in New Zealand. There are snow covered mountains, green valleys, rolling six foot waves crashing into rocks and boulders on the Tasman Sea, an Art Deco City, desert, waterfalls, hills, bushes that grow as tall as trees, astounding wildlife, 80,000 sheep, 40,000 people and 20,000 dogs. I tried to pet as many of the dogs as I could. The sheep moved too fast for me. I entered New Zealand through Auckland. This is a beautiful, thriving city inch round cutter; set aside. with an International Airport. From Auckland, I flew down to Wellington where I was to make my home base. Wellington is on the southern tip of the North Island or Aeotea as the native Maori people call it. This area was first inhabited by tribes of people from the Pacific Islands so you see a lot of people that look like the native Hawaiians. They are similar in coloring and facial features to the American Indians. These are a proud people with an exciting history. Their jewelry is made of paura shells, bone, ivory, jade, mussel shells and wood. They are carvers and their wooden temples are very ornate and beautiful. Even the Anglican Church has their prayer books printed in English and the language of the Maori people. Although New Zealand is a part of the United Kingdom, it is very international in style and culture. I was immediately taken aback by the fact that Wellington is a vertical city. Tall buildings stand on rolling hills and some of the streets are so steep that you have to shift into second gear to start the climb up. Being an English territory, they do drive on the right-hand side of the street or the wrong side if you are used to driving in America. Luckily, Dr. Amy is a very good driver and never once ventured into the wrong lane. Traffic is heavy and moves very fast on narrow roads. Amy’s apartment in Wellington is seven stories above the street and has a lovely view of the bay, harbor, and mountains across the bay and a vast sky filled with swiftly moving clouds. The sky looked very different in the southern hemisphere. I don’t know why but others visitors agreed with me. I think it was the high winds that

circulate above the awesome landscape. The view inside the apartment is also very attractive with modern furnishings and lots of windows so that the space appears larger than it is and is very bright. In the guest room where I stayed, two of the four walls were glass. There was also a balcony off this room which made relaxing with a smoke very comfortable since the lease did not allow for smoking inside the apartment. The living space is provided by the hospital that Amy is working for and it comes with a car. You are in the middle of everything that has to do with the government, I was told. It was true that a short walk brought me to Parliament, the Government buildings and libraries. In the middle of that was the Anglican Cathedral, St. Paul’s, which was celebrating its 150th anniversary. There is also an Old St. Paul’s. This is the structure that the church out grew when it was upgraded to a cathedral. Old St. Paul’s is a beautiful wooden building with carved arches and intricate wood work. It is only religiously active for special events – weddings and funerals and the like. To support the up keep, there is a small gift shop where I spend my entire gift giving budget. I also went a little out of the norm for me and purchased for myself two pendants, one in ivory and one in jade. Both pendants are Maori designs that are blessings for happiness, good fortune and improved health. Now the improved health part is what caught my attention. I had no idea how much difficulty I would have with my Titanium supported back and Titanium knee

sappho psalm ...from Main-20 until I tried walking for several miles each day. By the third day, I could no longer climb the stairs in the apartment. I lost one full day to pain. I am so happy that I opted out of the China trip for the New Zealand trip. I couldn’t have kept up with the tour in China. Still I did make the most of each day by touring by myself during the week and with Amy on weekends. Being a lover of the Art Deco style, a visit to Napier was a must. Napier is called the Art Deco City. In 1931, an earthquake destroyed Napier. In the rebuilding, it was turned into an Art Deco tribute. Napier is also located in the middle of some of the best wine country in the world in part thanks to the earthquake that turned some of the area into gravel pits. Once covered with good top spoil, the gravel pits were the perfect drainage for sensitive grape vines. There are several vineyards that are open to visitors and the tours are more interesting than the ones I took in California and New York – you get to see more and drink more too. For you Erte lovers, of which I am one, Napier is the place to find reproduction of his work. There were several statues that I dearly wanted but good judgment prevailed. I did find a vast that I couldn’t leave behind. The old hotel we stayed in was only two stories and there was a sunny tiled balcony/terrace where we could enjoy a meal, a smoke or just sit and watch the activities below. Napier is only a four hour drive from Wellington with beautiful country between so we enjoyed the drive as well as the weekend visit. Being dogs lovers paid off as we befriended two Dalmatians who were owned by the proprietor of the best Inn, restaurant and bar in town. The owner took a liking to we two Yanks and a stop for a glass of wine turned into an evening and night of great food, wine, martinis and fun. By the time we realized we needed to sleep off some of the wine we had sampled, it was early morning. We walked, giggling all the way, back to our more modestly priced hotel. The area was similar to the French Quarter in size and we felt at home. The crime rate in New Zealand is very low so a short walk at 2am did not cause concern in us or our new friends. Tourism is a huge industry there so I was pleasantly pleased to learn of the lack of crime. The thought of lots of

people walking around with money and plastic in their pockets sends a New Orleans’ criminal into euphoria. Our second weekend trip took us to the Botanical Gardens, Wildlife Preserve and Cuba Street which is much like our Bourbon Street. Clubs or what they call cafes send jazz music into the night. It was a wonderful holiday and I recommend New Zealand to everyone. The exchange rate is great. I was getting $1.72 NZ cash for every US dollar. And the prices were excellent. I was able to go everywhere I wanted and purchase almost anything I wanted without

breaking my budget. Dr. Amy is thinking of doing another six months tour of duty at the hospital and I am definitely thinking of spending another vacation there. Of course, all of her family is planning to visit as well as many of her friends so I am now on the bottom of the waiting list. It will certainly be worth the long flight and wait to get back to the perfect vacation spot – New Zealand.

From Wall Street to Skid Row

I

must confess to being an avid Economist reader, as well as a keen follower of the Financial Times; and sometimes friends have asked me what economics have to do with pastoring a church. Presumably as economic Armageddon threatens to roll across the financial landscape of America, and starts to eat away at people’s pensions and 401K’s, and as capital dries up across the world the connection is going to end up being painfully clear. People’s lives and wellbeing are dependant upon the workings of a profoundly dysfunctional financial system. In the world we live in there is no difference between Wall Street and Main Street – the two places and worlds are tied together with chains of debt and dependence. Unfortunately this means that as much as we may resist anything that helps Wall Street bankers we are faced with ‘cutting off our noses to spite our faces’ we hurt Wall Street and we hurt ourselves. In short order a capital freeze (capital is funds available for investment) trickles down to stop your average Joe getting mortgages, car loans, home improvement loans, re-fi’s – indeed, the whole range of financial products upon which the west-

ern capitalist system relies. Whole swathes of the economy face stagnation and extinction unless the wheels start turning again. My own country, The United Kingdom, is in some ways in an even worse pickle than the USA; Britain relies disproportionately upon the wealth generated by the World’s largest financial institution – The City of London, and yet with only 60 million people to pay for a potential bailout instead of 300 million in America. A large part of the business of these financial markets has changed from solid investments in companies that do things and make things to bizarre and creative forms of gambling like Short selling, where dealers ‘borrow’ shares from others in the hope that they have lost value by the time they have to be given back – thereby turning a profit; if I borrow a share at $10, sell it, then have to buy another to give it back at only $5 then I have $5 profit – this is dodgy dealing of the first order! The main cause of the crisis of course is the transformation of ‘sub prime’ (bad in everyday English) mortgages into a financial commodity that banks and institutions traded between themselves at inflated values as if they were oil or gold. When the reality dawned these institutions found themselves with vast holdings of near valueless ‘repackaged’ bad loans. Of course, it would have been even better if people had not been mis-sold these bad mortgages in the first place! Well, that’s the cause, that’s the reality we find ourselves in – what does this have to do with a Pastor? Where is God in any of this? Well, our ancestors in the faith used to hold the sin of Usury as amongst the worst – and instead of laughing about how

quaint that is let us examine what usury is, and what it’s consequences are in OUR world. Usury is lending money at interest – and it was disliked because of its misuse, and it was misused in much the same ways that it is today. How many people today are in effective economic bondage due to credit card debt? How many people’s lives are blighted by loan sharks? How many people are now in danger of losing their homes because they were saddled with sub prime mortgages with obscene interest rates? How many people are relegated to second class citizens because of their credit rating? – it is not good enough to say ‘Ah well, people have choices and sometimes make bad ones’, yes they do, but until everyone starts out at age 21 with identical education, prospects and financial background I am not content to expect everyone to make equally good financial choice – the vulnerable need to be protected! What is good for the goose is generally good for the gan-

der, and I cannot help but feel that if Wall Street institutions are to be absolved from their bad decisions then maybe the poor souls being evicted and foreclosed upon may be absolved as well? They would become property owners outright with vastly more manageable financial obligations and instead of rows of empty bankowned houses blighting neighborhoods you would have proud home owners maintaining and caring for their homes. Perhaps also, after the experience of ‘nationalizing’ several banks and insurance companies, and not having turned into rabid communists, law makers will stop associating universal healthcare with socialism! I assure you all, Britain, France, Germany, Canada, Spain, Holland and all those other countries with universal healthcare do not equate it with socialist doctrine, but with common sense, compassion and the need to avoid having people dying needlessly in a modern western country. The financial system, just like the rest of government and society cannot carry on endlessly divorced from basic human compassion and what Scripture calls ‘lovingkindness’. I passionately believe that what is right will always eventually be what is best for the greatest number of people. Treating people as economic slaves, or as tools in a gigantic financial fiddle cannot lead to good results, no matter how frequently it is tried – sooner or later we have to remake our whole system along more human lines, compassion leads to happiness, leads to productivity, leads to a well adjusted, tolerant society.

J

agger’s Revolution by Kevin Hunter is one of the best gay books to come across my desk in quite some time. In fact, I not only got the book but the screenplay too. Hunter is not only a very sexy and handsome man, he is an uninhibited fiction writer whose work in entertainment began in the film business. A Southern Californian, he wrote Navy Blue Eyes and had film credits also – The Perfect Storm, Crazy in Alabama, Dr. Doolittle 2, and Carolina to name a few. Jagger isn’t your typical sex columnist, he’s a menace and has a temper – but is highly perceptive. He’s a strong guy who writes provoking and bold columns about his personal dating struggles. His engaging friends compliment his aggressive nature by tempering his inflexible fight on mankind to gain insight into their intolerable behavior. He has one bad date and relationship after another while hungering over a hot lifeguard he keeps crossing paths with and interpreting it as fate. Jagger is a detailed character study into life of a mod-

trait of the adult entertainment industry. It is also a story of one of m a n ’ s spiritual struggle, the quest for a meaningful life, for love, and the need for community. As the most celebrated black gay porn star in the business, Bobby Blake has seen and been through it all. From his roots as a bisexual black male in the Deep South dealing with a troubled mother, criminal brother, an absentee father, and his own life-threatening health problems, to his early experiences in the porn industry where drugs, racism, and other obstacles presented constant challenges, Blake has come through the other side as exactly the man he wants to be. In his tale of a man who went from preacher to porn star and back into the ministry, of sex workers balancing normal romantic relationships, the self-destructive behavior of many of his peers, and more, Blake offers a fresh and unique account of his life and a highly revealing behind-the-scenes picture of the adult film industry. It is a rough ride at times but an unquestionably exciting one. This excellent book is $14.95 and published by Running Press.

A

ern day revolutionist. This is a nice book and impressive in every way, even down to the dedication. Hunter dedicated it to every soldier, men and women, forced to hide their sexuality to fight for their country. He states that their undying bravery is far greater and has more validity than anybody and anything he’s ever known. It is also for those soldiers who fight for wars they don’t agree with. He calls them his American heroes – and he is absolutely correct in stating it this way. By all means, add Jagger’s Revolution to your collection of reading materials. It is published by AuthorHouse and priced at $13.97. The screenplay version is $12.35.

I

f you’re into the Levi/Leather genre, or you want to add to your “bar wear”, clear your calendar for Sunday, October 18 at 3 pm. That’s when the Southern Renegades will host their first Charity T-Shirt Auction to benefit the NO/ AIDS Task Force. It all happens at the Phoenix bar, and is a prelude to that night’s Mr. Louisiana Leather Contest, hosted by the Lords of Leather. The Southern Renegades is the Gulf Coast’s newest Levi/Leather club, serving Mobile, Pensacola and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Two of the club’s members will be contestants in that night’s leather contest. But during the auction, they’ll put on each t-shirt, which will then be “auctioned right off their backs!” The shirts have been donated by a variety of leather bars, leather clubs and leather shops from San Francisco to NYC and places in between. The Southern Renegades and the Phoenix will also serve up a complimentary batch of cocktails during the auction. The Southern Renegades Charity TShirt Auction is a new and unique way to

Mr. Southern Renegade Mobile John Cauloy & Mr. Southern Renegade Pensacola Darrel Foret

raise funds for one of New Orleans’ most noble charities. It’s also a way for the Renegades to introduce themselves to New Orleans. You can learn more at the club’s website: www.southernrenegades.com.

one last song by Donnie "Jager" Jay, SDGM XXXII E-mail: donniejay@hotmail.com

A Time For Adjustment: Part Four

S

orry once again there was no One Last Song column last issue, but it was due to some laser surgery I had on my eye to repair a ripped retina. I still can not see very well out of my right eye and everything is quite blurry, but according to my doctors my sight should be back to normal in three to four weeks. I am no longer getting the headaches that were so painful I could not concentrate to work. I am hunting and pecking now, but at least I am getting something done. I keep saying that I am going to get a month ahead of myself with these writings, but I seem to be a compulsive procrastinator. I promise that I will get this particular story line finished in the next few issues, but it seems to have a mind of its own and continues to grow within my head. To bring you up to date again would really do no good, but I’m sure you do recall that our Kevin had met a young man in Jackson Square, taken him home for the evening and spent the next full day in bed doing everything and anything that came up between the two of them. After dressing to go out for dinner Dale started to pack his meager belongings in the knapsack he has carried, but Kevin stopped him saying “Leave it, we are just going out for dinner and then we’ll come back here. That is if you want to?” “Sure,” was Dale’s reply. Dale knew he wanted to stay on for awhile with this older man. He had a great time in this one night and was sure that

there would be at least a few more to relish. And as for Kevin? Well he had been smitten with this youngster from the very first time he had found him, he was insatiable in his youth and that made Kevin crave him more with every passing second. Even now as they were heading to get something to eat he wanted to thrust him into the oleander bushes along the walkway and ravish him right then and there. He wanted to strip Dale naked, thrust him to the ground and have his way with him, and in his heart he knew that was just what the guy himself wanted. But he stayed composed and continued to have idle chat as they turned down Saint Louis Street and headed to Petunias Restaurant. They climbed the stairway that led into the small foyer which led into the restaurant and stopped at the sign that read Please Wait to Be Seated. It only took a minute or so for a waiter to meet them there, smiling he welcomed them and showed them to a small table near the front window. The waiter was an attractive blonde man probably in his late twenties or maybe even early thirties; he took their drink orders and quietly left. Kevin looked across the table at Dale and smiled. Dale questioned him, “What?” “You have made me feel wonderful at a time in my life I didn’t think I was capable of feeling." “Really," was all Dale could reply to Kevin’s statement? "How so?" Thankful for being asked Kevin went on to explain his past to Dale, his life up until they met just the day before yesterday.

His love for and his loss of Russell, how alone and fearful he felt in the world. How he was sure that there would never be anyone else who could ever stir real feelings in him. And how now…..and he just fell silent. Bowing his head towards the table closed his eyes. “And now?” He didn’t reply to that question right away, and Dave realized that he was weeping silently. Instinctively he reached across the table and took Kevin’s hand into his. “And now I’m beginning to feel all over again.” He lifted his head and looked deeply into Dave’s eyes. “Is that a bad thing for you?” “No, it isn’t.” “Then why the tears? Do you feel like you're betraying the memory of you deceased lover?’ “Not at all, I just am so, I don’t know, excited, blessed that I still can attain these feelings.” “Death is a funny thing, sure it closes a wonderful place, more than likely, a doorway to happiness, but it also paves the way for another one to open.” “That’s a rather astute thought for someone so young.” “I might be a few years your junior, but I’m not uneducated nor am I stupid.” “That’s not what I was insulating." “My life has not been a bed of roses up till this point either.” The waiter arrived with the drinks and placed two menus before them. “I’ll be back shortly,” walking away so they could continue their conversation. “Look,” Dale smiled, “let’s talk about this some other time rather than right now. I want to enjoy this evening with you, and I don’t want to get into my past right at this moment. If that’s all right with you. I appreciate your opening up to me like you did, but I think you may need a little more time to get to know just what kind of a guy I am, before you hear all the sordid details of my short life.” “Well I will concede that point to you. After all you’re a better judge of yourself than anyone else could possible be. Have you eaten here before?” abruptly he changed the subject. “I didn’t even know the place was here. Do you have something to recommend for me.” “That I do. I must say that everything they serve here is outstanding but I am especially fond of the crepes.” “Then you order for both of us, there isn’t a single thing I dislike or am allergic to.” Dale was glad to see that Kevin had made a fast recovery from where ever he seemed to be headed and from a conversation of his past that he was sure Kevin would not want to here. He signaled the waiter that they were ready to order. Kevin placed their order and as it arrived in courses, he was glad that he had allowed him to do so. Everything was perfection as he said it would be. Afterwards as they were sipping their coffee and brandies, their conversation naturally ebbed. Dave was relishing the atmosphere as Kevin just watched out the window at the foot traffic passing by. He was beginning to understand why they referred to this area as the financial district. He couldn’t help but keep watching the parade of passerby’s headed to the bars further down the street away from Bourbon, a strange mix of people it was. There were of course the usual strangers that were coming to the restaurant to dine,

but mostly it was rough trade and over sized drag queens dressed in under sized garments. The desserts came and the conversation resumed between the two of them. Then someone caught Kevin’s attention from the corner of his eye. Standing across the street staring into the window was a very attractive well built man about Kevin’s own age. He looked rather familiar, almost as if he should know whom he was. ‘What are you staring at?” Dale asked. “Him,” Kevin replied, but when the two of them glanced out the window there was no one there. “There’s no one out there.” “Well I swear there was just a second ago.” “Must have been someone hot, you were almost drooling.” “Built like a brick, well never mind, but that’s not what caught my eye, I thought I knew him.” “You want to go look for him?” “Not really, I’ve found what I’ve been searching for." “They paid the check and headed out the doorway and headed back to Kevin’s place.” “When we get back to my apartment I have a song I want to play for you.” “Well you better make it ONE LAST SONG for the night, because there are other things I want to play." book beat ...from Expose-4 emotional honesty and raw physical detail is compelling. Published by Running Press, it is also priced at $14.95. Don’t overlook Shaw’s other books – Brutal, Wasted, and Boundaries. They are all good if you go for this type setting. They are all sexually satisfying.

G

irls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys is a collection of original essays and goes beyond the banter to get to the essence of an intimate relationship like no other. What is most interesting about this book is the way the authors relate their true tales of friendships between straight women and gay men. T h e s e people are from all walks of life and includes National Book Award winner Andrew Solomon, novelist Gigi Levangie Graser (The Starter Wife), Sex and the City writer Cindy Chupack and Barneys New York creative director Simon Doonan. These are not just stories of gays and gals bonding over brunch, but these essays also chronicle tales of love and lust, infatuation and heartbreak, growing up and coming out, and family and children. The stories are hilarious, heartwarming, and groundbreaking in many ways. Overall, it shows how straight women and gay men are each other’s true best friends. This one is a Plume Book and priced at $16.

Back Side

I

made it a point last week to stop off at the Sound Factory to see what was up over at this Lafayette landmark. Actually, Sound Factory wasn’t open, and Back Side was just about to start another day of activity. As Sam and I were parking, that sexy and adorable Back Side stud Mark came walking up and gave us his normal and exceptionally nice greeting. We had just missed John, but I’m sure we can make it back over to do another visit soon. It was the first time I had seen all the improvements made on this entertainment establishment, and I am really pleased to report that it really gives it a new and fabulous look, especially Back Side. What used to be a bar is now a nicely wood-paneled wall with a new bar along the opposite wall. There is a door near the front that goes into the Sound Factory section, and it remains somewhat the same. As I understand it, Back Side opens early for the pleasure of customers, and Sound Factory is the late venue for those seeking music and dancing. In fact, the later it gets, the more this side of the bar kicks in. They may start late, but late is a good thing for them. While other bars are closing, Sound Factory is just getting started, and they have a great lineup of weekly activities too. I rather think that Back Side caters to this group too, but it is especially popular with the older and wiser generations who rise and shine early, kick up their heels during the day and early evening, and then retire to rest for another day’s round of activities. Back Side is the right place to be for this generation of happy people, and with cutie bartenders like Chris and Ron, who were on duty when Sam and I arrived, this is the place to be come mid-afternoon. I was very pleased to meet both of these sexy guys, but when I learned that Ron had a good looking policeman back home, I perked up. It was Johnny, who I’ve known for years but haven’t seen since he got back from Iraq. I gladly sent him care packages of food and books while he was there, and Ron called him so I could say hello. It really made my day, and I appreciate getting to talk to him. Overall, I have to say that Back Side may have changed for the better, but Mark hasn’t changed at all, and age has only made him better. It is difficult to improve on perfection, but this is one guy who is an example of what perfection is all about. He can make your heart go pitter-patter just by being in your company. I felt pitter-patter pangs elsewhere when he hugged me. It just goes to show that what comes up and goes down will come back to life at the least bit of gentlemanly affection. It also proves that the domes may be slick and shiny, but there is still plenty of fire down below. I’m hoping to see both Mark and John when they make it back to Red Stick. I may even surprise them both, especially John, by showing up at Crystal’s in Lake Charles. By the way, John, do you still see those sexy twins over there? I’ll never forget photographing one of them. He knew I had that camera pointed his way, and I believe he felt honored by the attention although we never met. I guess he didn’t want his girlfriend to know there was “eye contact.” I was very happy to get a personal descrip-

tion of the equipment from John. He does have wonderful ways of experiencing sightings. I would like to add that Back Side and Sound Factory are also great gathering places for members and friends of the Royal Order of Unicorn. I need to get back with my sweet Kenny and join him for a drink or two. Just tell me when, sweetie, and I’m on my way. As most of you know, ROU is one of the best Mardi Gras groups you will ever find. To experience one of their balls is sheer magic, and they know how to do their balls up just right. They are a fun group, and I always enjoy the wonderful camaraderie I experience when I’m in their company. Of course, Kenny, Garland, Clyde, Pamalia, Fred, Stephanie, Linda, Lucy, and all the other members deserve praise for all the hard work they do in putting on this annual extravaganza.

Kiley Away

I

’m so glad I was out last week at Splash. When Kiley came waltzing in, I realized it had been two or three years since I had seen him. Sam was with me, and it was like a reunion of sorts, and we stood around recalling some of the good times we have had together. Kiley is leaving for the bright lights of California, namely San Francisco, and I can tell you right now that he has skated his way into fame and fortune. He is going to be working for Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), one of the top entertainment-related companies in the country. Since 1975, ILM has been providing post-production visual effects services to the entertainment industry. Motion pictures, commercials, trailers, music videos and special venue projects have utilized ILM’s unequaled artistry in techniques such as model making, matte painting, computer-generated imagery, digital animation and a variety of related processes required in the production of visual effects. Groundbreaking software required for digital image production has been developed and shared with the industry at large and adopted by other companies and software manufacturers. ILM regularly consults with some of the industry’s most highly regarded filmmakers on proof of concept tests. ILM has been associated with fourteen movies which have earned the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and has been awarded seventeen technical achievement awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Just the mention of the name George Lucas, and you know you are in good company. In Kiley’s case, he is going to be working with some of the top dogs in the business. I am so pleased for him. As I mentioned, Kiley literally skated his way into fame. He did that at one of the Baton Rouge Mardi Gras balls several years ago. He was going great until the skate decided to tie into the skirt hoop and down went Kiley with undergarments in full view. It would have been such a sad situation, but for Kiley it was just the beginning. He got right up, threw that chin up, and skated into history. The only thing that would have been the show stopper was voiced by an Apollo friend. The advice was that he should have turned around when he exited the stage, threw that head in the air, and then bowed to the audience. As it was, it wasn’t necessary, and at the time, [continued on Expose-21]

hot tails of red stick ...from EX-20 Kiley could hardly wait to get off stage. I have to mention another great costume that Kiley created. Do you remember the singer in “The Fifth Element?” That blue outfit came to life on the Apollo stage, and the costume was on display at Hibiscus Bookstore for a while. It was built to perfection as only Kiley could do it. Now you know why he is qualified to be a new employee of ILM. Someone has finally recognized the talent that I saw long ago. I am so very proud of Kiley. I know you all will join me in wishing him much success in the bright lights of future Hollywood endeavors. And to top it off, he gets to live in San Francisco, one of my favorite cities. Can I come visit you in December when I come out to see the Christmas lights? I’ll treat you to an excellent dinner at the Tibetan restaurant on Lombard, right near your office complex and then we can go up to the top of Twin Peaks which overlooks the Castro and view the entire city by the bay. Let me know, sweetie. Maybe I can talk a very talented Lance (an excellent illustrative and technical artist) into coming with me.

Odds and Ends

I

t was one of the classiest dinners I’ve been to in quite some time. Little John did his best to produce a fine evening of Italian dining at his townhouse apartment. With a little help from significant other Phil, we enjoyed a wonderful evening together. It only ended when it did because they had to watch “Heroes,” and I had to get home for “CSI: Miami.”

I noted in talking with Karen and Lance that they also like “CSI: Miami.” We all agreed that it was a great loss when they killed off Tim Speedle (played by Rory Cochran). Rory went on to star in one of the best TV movies I’ve ever seen, called “The Company,” which also saw the best acting of his career from Chris O’Donnell. It was a great one. Check it out if you get the chance. I made sure I got a copy on DVD. It looks great on my big screen in my home theater. On October 10th, you need to be at Splash for the big fundraiser to benefit the Greg T. Bell A.I.D.S. Foundation. You can see your favorite bartenders in drag as Turn-A-Bout V goes into Sordid Drag Lives. It’s all for a good cause. I loved Greg. He was a friend and always had a smile on his face. I still miss him. I stopped by for a drink with Miss Jeannie last week, but I missed her. I was a little too early and had to get on to another assignment, but I plan to get back with her at Hound Dogs soon. I need to check in with Joy too to see what she has up her skirt – oops – what she has planned for her next party. Luther keeps me smiling with his presence at our dinners. Of course, Gerry has a way of revving up the excitement at these gatherings. We usually go Italian, but Luther was hungry for steak, and we made it to Outback with Matt from Houston. At least, I found out how he likes his meat – steak, of course. Recently, Gerry kept forking Luther, and then there was the nipple episode. Goodness, Luther! You have great nipples! And the forking was something else!

gay history month Elton John Interview Exclusive to Ambush Mag by Mark Segal, Gay History Project Editor’s Note: Mark Segal is Publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News and in 2005 produced Philadelphia’s Official July 4th concert which starred Sir Elton John, Pattie Labelle and Bryan Adams and raised $1,000,000 for the EJAF and $100,000 for local HIV/AIDS organizations. ark Segal (MS): Oscar Wilde wrote “Anybody can make history. Only a great man can write it.” Your new musical Billy Elliott certainly fits that realm, and at the same time takes on homophobia. Was that one of the issues that brought you to this project. Elton John (EJ): The main attraction to me for Billy Elliott was the deep connection I felt with the film. Billy’s artistic and social journey had parallels with my own life and wanting to be a musician. Having said that, I find Billy’s friendship with his gay friend Michael to be genuinely touching so that was a focus for me as well. MS: Part of your history is the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Each year you tour a country where EJAF has program. What are your most memorable thoughts from

those trips? EJ: For the past few years, my partner David Furnish and I, along with friends and colleagues from the Elton John AIDS Foundation have gone to South Africa every January. And, as you say we make a point to visit projects and organizations that are supported by EJAF. These annual trips have become not only an activity to which I look forward, but in fact give me much energy at the beginning of each year. I am always overwhelmed by the hopeful spirit that surrounds all the people with whom we come in contact – and these are people whose lives have been ravaged on so many levels by HIV/AIDS. They are children whose parents have died from AIDS. They are heads of households at 10. They are wives whose husbands have died. The stories go on and on and yet they carry on with such hope and dignity. It is a true inspiration and is something that helps focus my energy to continue to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation to support such work all around the world. Last year, I also traveled to the Ukraine where EJAF supports a number of projects. In fact, during the summer of 2007 I played an outdoor concert in Kiev to

all Break was last week and I know all you college students used it to catch up on some much needed sleep. Now that we’re back at school, the party season really gets underway. From here until the new year, it seems like there is always something wild and festive going on. In just a few weeks the season kicks off with my favorite holiday, Halloween, and I hear that this year’s celebrations will be wilder than ever. The Sound Factory and Back Side are already gearing up for their annual Halloween Extravaganza. And since it falls on a weekend for the first time in quite a few years, it should be more memorable than ever. So start working on your costumes now, because Halloween in Downtown Lafayette is like nowhere else. And don’t forget about Sound Factory’s Costume Contest. If you’re creative enough, the night might just turn out profitable, as well as wild. While you’re getting ready for the big Halloween Celebration, don’t forget about Sound Factory and Back Sides’ brand new weekly line-up. Every Monday you can compete in the weekly Pool Tournament at Back Side. If you’re good with a stick, come by and show off your talent. Whether you win or lose, it’ s always a great time. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Back by popular demand, Wednesday nights will host Lube Wrestling, and while it may yet to be an Olympic sport, it

is definitely one of the sexiest events of the week. And of course, you’re always welcome to participate. If you can wrestle, or just like to get all lubed up, come by early and sign up. If you win, there’s always fabulous prizes. Thursday is Lady’s Night at Sound Factory, but if you’re a guy, don’t worry, the Back Side will always have some specials for you too. Friday Nights are the ever popular Dance Party where you can get out on the floor and go wild to some of the best music around. Then on Saturday you can be entertained by their ever popular Show Night. Each week there’ll be special entertainment to liven up the Lafayette nightlife. And who could forget Sundays with its twelve hours of fun and festivities? It begins at noon on Back Side with their Sunday Lunch Buffet and continues that night with the infamous Drag Races at Sound Factory. By midnight you ’re ready for a good night sleep since it all starts over again the next day. All in all, Sound Factory and Back Side make sure that no matter what night of the week you hit the Downtown, there’s always something festive going on. Time is ticking away until the big Halloween celebration, so you better get to work on your outfits. And remember, it’s the one night of the year when anything goes, so get wild and crazy, show us just how creative you can be. Until next time, have fun and be safe. I’ll see you around the Downtown.

raise money and awareness for our work and HIV/AIDS in general. It was so gratifying and energizing to play before such enormous and enthusiastic crowds. Earlier this year, David traveled to India with EJAF staff and other Board members to view projects we support there. David and I are very proud of the work that we are supporting in that country. This year, we look forward to traveling to Cambodia to visit projects in that country. MS: Are there any new projects in the pipeline for EJAF? EJ: Well, I am happy to report that since 2005 EJAF has met with ever greater fund-raising success and has increased its grant making here in the U.S. by 140%. We have expanded not only the amount of money given but also strategically targeted key regions and populations that are poorly served by current prevention efforts and most at risk of infection including: critically under-funded communities of the Southern United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America; highly marginalized populations such as injection drug users, men who have sex with men, and incarcerated individuals; and underserved populations such as African Americans and young people. To use a specific example, many of the grants that EJAF has made over the last couple of years reinforce and enhance our commitment to HIV/AIDS awareness-raising, prevention, and treatment access programs in the Caribbean, the second-most HIV/AIDS affected region in the world after sub-Saharan Africa. In 2007 alone, 17,000 people in the Caribbean were newly infected with the virus, and as many as 230,000 Caribbean residents are currently living with HIV. It is also a region where there is tremendous stigma around HIV/AIDS. In 2007, EJAF invested more than $1.6 million in grants to this region and nearly $1.4 million so far in 2008, addressing the specific challenges of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on a variety of levels. To ameliorate prejudices and reduce stigma faced by people with HIV/AIDS, EJAF partnered with the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation to help establish the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS (CBMP). Since its launch in May 2006, the CBMP has grown to include more than 80 leading broadcasters from 25 Caribbean countries and territories across the region, in an unprecedented collaboration to develop a coordinated media response to AIDS. CBMP broadcast members have made HIV/AIDS a business priority, and they air HIV content across all programming genres, delivering important messages about tolerance and HIV prevention to an estimated audience of some 40 million people. With the new grant just awarded in early September, the CBMP will be expanding its efforts into Haiti, the country most affected by HIV/ AIDS in the Western Hemisphere. So, I am very pleased that EJAF can not only maintain its commitments to funding projects at the front lines here in the U.S., but can also expand to areas in

desperate need such as the Caribbean region. MS: If I’d ask someone from the U.S. about gay history they most likely would mention the Stonewall riots in 1969. Many in Britain might think of Oscar Wilde’s trials in 1895. When I say gay history what comes to your mind? EJ: For me, I would have to say that when I think of gay history I immediately think of my own civil partnership with my partner David. When civil partnerships became possible in the United Kingdom, it was very important for David and I to be able to do this on the first day it was possible. I really felt part of something genuinely progressive and groundbreaking and we were also so totally overwhelmed and heartened by the positive support we received across the board from the press, my fans, the people of Great Britain and literally the world over! MS: Ray Charles, The Beatles and Sir Elton John are all musical history. Charles will be known mostly by his music. The Beatles will be remembered for their musical invasion of the U.S. How would you want history to remember you? EJ: I would like to be remembered very simply as a good person. MS: Over the last few years you’ve been outspoken on a number of issues and causes: AIDS and HIV of course, gay marriage and even sexism. Can your own history in the gay community teach us anything? EJ: We can certainly continue to make tremendous strides by positively pulling together as a community and directing our energy toward the issues that really matter. I always say that life is about building bridges not walls. MS: Part of our struggle is the right for equality. You stood up for equality when you and David married in Windsor. Any advice for those battling in California for that right? EJ: I would say that ultimately we should not be deterred by those who do not want us to gain equal footing in society. The path to that day of victory will not be easy and there will be those individuals who will try and stand in the way of progress. But, I feel that over time the ideals of equality for gay men and women – in this case to marry – will prevail. So, don’t lose sight of what is right. MS: On a light note, how does it feel to be a married man? EJ: Wonderful! As I said, David and I deliberately chose to have our civil partnership on the very first day that this became legal and possible in Great Britain; however, after all the excitement died down, we both felt incredibly content and secure in the knowledge that mainstream British society now supported our relationship.
