trodding the boards by Brian Sands

E-mail: bsnola2@hotmail.com

Assassins at Le Petit’s Muriel’s Cabaret Theatre

T

he NOLA Project’s recent production of Assassins was not for those who like their musicals neatly wrapped with a happy ending. For everyone else, however, it was an opportunity to see Stephen Sondheim’s award winner in a production that is unlikely to be surpassed here in our lifetime. An off-Broadway flop in 1991, Assassins returned in 2004 to connect with critics if not necessarily with the masses. As it explores the psyches and motivations of actual and would-be killers of American presidents, this ground-breaking musical demonstrates a hideous corruption of America’s cando spirit, the flip side of Oklahoma’s optimism. Given its local premiere on the eve of another presidential election, Assassins remains relevant, the instant fame that accrued to its dramatis personae non gratae upon firing a historyaltering shot being a distant relative to Sarah Palin’s overnight celebrity upon becoming the Republican Party’s vicepresidential nominee. I’ll admit that I liked, but didn’t love, Assassins when I first saw Roundabout’s version a few days after it won 5 Tony Awards; it was not always easy to figure out who was killing whom and why, and it was a bit of a challenge to follow Sondheim’s deliciously intricate lyrics. Four years and countless listenings to the original cast recording later, I’m a fan. Even so, I was not fully prepared for Director AJ Allegra’s pitch-perfect production which found a way to make John Weidman’s interesting, though

disjointed, script work. If one misses the bells and whistles of Joe Mantello’s Broadway interpretation, Allegra’s less busy approach allowed for greater clarity while still finding humor in this grizzly subject. And unlike the emotionallydistancing vastness of Studio 54, Allegra used the in-your-face intimacy of Muriel’s Cabaret Theatre to white knuckle effect. In one of the most outstanding ensembles ever to be seen on a New Orleans stage, two performances stood out. Richard Alexander Pomes unleashed volcanic depths of fury as Sam Byck who had planned to crash a hijacked plane into Nixon’s White House. Though least similar in appearance to “his” assassin, Pomes nailed Byck’s grandiose bitterness. And Lisa Picone’s Sara Jane Moore was the finest characterization I’ve yet seen of hers and a personal triumph for this courageous breast cancer survivor as she returned to trodding the boards after an annus interruptus. Picone found the hair thin line between the comically desperate and the dramatically crazy sides of this dowdy would-be killer of Gerald Ford, and walked it expertly from start to finish. In addition, Jimmy Murphy made an intense John Wilkes Booth who truly believed he was doing the best thing for his country by killing Lincoln; Ricky Graham captured Charlie Guiteau’s eccentricities while giving depth to Garfield’s killer; Gary Rucker was unassuming yet pointed as the Balladeer and didn’t overplay it as Lee Harvey Oswald; and Vatican Lokey was suitably demonic as the Proprietor, using a lighter, and hence more effective, touch

Eleanor Bernstein, Kirk Bush and Jessica Greenberg in The Arabian Nights

than he employed in Miss Saigon. Newcomers Sam Dudley (Leon Czolgosz), Lauren Elens (Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme) and Alex Martinez Wallace (Giuseppe Zangara) all held their own with the veterans on stage. Elens seemed a bit too tough as Fromme but she made up for it in a fine Unworthy of Your Love duet with Matthew Mickal, unrecognizable as John Hinckley. Tara Brewer, Paul Broussard, William Bryant, Andrew Farrier, Kate Kuen, Angela Papale, and youngAaron Richert excellently completed the cast. >From the superb Opening onwards, Musical Director Jefferson Turner did a brilliant job with this difficult score. Under Scott Sauber’s ominously candycolored lights, Cecile Covert filled Eli Grove & Kyle Herbert’s simple but effective set with period appropriate outfits for each assassin. I’m writing this a week before Election Day. If by the time you’re reading this, Barack Obama has been elected President, as seems likely tho by no means definite, let’s hope certain predictions prove false and there’ll be no need to add another character to any future productions of Assassins. Only time will tell.

The Arabian Nights at Tulane’s Lupin Theater

A

The cast of Assassins

fter seeing The Arabian Nights recently, I gave a silent prayer: O Allah, permit Lorenzo Gonzalez many happy years of directing plays so that his time on earth is so well-filled that he shall never again have the time to act in any. I’ll say no more about his lamentable forays into Shakespearean acting earlier this season (his Ali Hakim in Summer Lyric’s Oklahoma was slightly better), but on the basis of The Arabian Nights and last year’s The Wedding Dress, I am already looking forward to whatever directorial assignment he takes on next. The Arabian Nights is a compendium of the tales that originated hundreds of years ago in India, Persia, Egypt and other Arab lands said to be

told by Scheherezade to delay her execution by Shahryar. (She succeeded indefinitely.) Mary Zimmerman rearranged and rewrote them, and this version was first produced in Chicago in 1992. Scheherezade’s brilliant imagination, or whomever’s it was who came up with these tales, encompasses a panorama of human emotions and situations. We’re given genies, kings, thieves, slave girls, sheiks, princesses, and caliphs sprinkled among tales of knowledge, loss, honor, dishonor, calumny, fortunes found and lovers lost. At times, it’s reminiscent of the complexity of an Escher drawing with stories within stories that lead onto other stories. Gonzalez used the Lupin’s small space to its fullest extent, found the script’s humor without overdoing it and, overall, did a beautiful job of directing with a light hand and imaginative flourishes. The group of belly dancers, choreographed by Stephanie Herring, was a nice touch. Zimmerman challenges actors by using language that is in league with Shakespeare’s; the Tulane cast generally mastered this although some accents seemed a bit jarringly out of place. Arabian Nights’ Story Theater-ish nature encourages a innocent childlike approach to the material. If some in the young cast were not as polished as others in this presentational style of acting, every single ensemble member conveyed an emotional aptness as right as the sun’s glow or the greenness of grass. As the show progressed, the actors eased into their characters and seemed more comfortable quick-changing between broad comedy (e.g., fart jokes) and the most intimate of human feelings. Giving the most assured performances were Samuel Repshas and Susan Lanigan in multiple roles, and Eleanor Bernstein, luminous as Scheherezade. Though the entire rest of the cast displayed lots of potential,

Thanksgiving 2008

I

can’t believe it’s time to think turkey already, but the weather outside is screaming that it is, the temp outside is in the low 60s and falling with 40s forecasted overnight. I swear I just wrote about this not long ago. Well its true time just flies by the older you get, so do all those caloric ridden meals past. Well this is a trimmer holiday feast. This menu will feed about ten folks, so make it a family affair. TOMATO- BASIL TOAST 16 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped 4 green onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced ½ cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil 2 teaspoons olive oil 1-2 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper 2 (8-ounce) French baguettes, cut into ½-inch-thick sliced Vegetable cooking spray Stir together first eight ingredients, cover and chill at least one hour. Arrange bread slices on baking sheets; lightly coat with cooking spray. Bake at 425 degrees for nine minutes or until lightly browned. Spoon tomato mixture over baguette slices. Serve immediately. CITRUS AND HERB TURKEY 1 (1 ½ pound) bone-in turkey breast 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon butter, softened 3 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 3 tablespoons chopped fresh sage 2 oranges, thinly sliced 2 lemons, thinly sliced vegetable cooking spray 1 large onion, quartered Sprinkle turkey breast evenly with salt and pepper. Stir together butter, rosemary and sage. Loosen skin from turkey without detaching it; spread butter mixture under skin. Arrange onefourth of orange and lemon slices over butter mixture. Gently pull skin over meat. Coat skin with cooking spray. Place turkey in an aluminum foil-lined pan coated with cooking spray. Place onion and remaining fruit slices in pan. Drizzle with water. Bake turkey at 325 degrees for two hours and fifteen minutes or until meat thermometer inserted into thickest part registers 170 degrees, basting every 30 minutes. Cover loosely with aluminum foil coated with cooking

spray to prevent excessive browning after first hour and thirty minutes, if necessary. CRANBERRY SALSA 3 cups fresh cranberries 2 teaspoons grated orange rind 2 oranges, peeled and chopped 1 yellow bell pepper, diced 1 cup sugar (I use Splenda) 4 tablespoons fresh orange juice 1 teaspoon ground allspice ½ teaspoon salt 4 teaspoons olive oil

trodding the boards ...from M-14 Billie Stirewalt, Shannon Lynn March and Stephen Foley (dryly funny he) particularly stood out; Kirk Bush is not ready yet but he has the makings of a distinguished Othello some day. Valerie Johnson’s fantastic set was like an enlarged Persian rug. Brad Minardi’s lighting reminded me of sunlight coming through the colored windows of an ancient Turkish bathhouse. Christopher Arthur coordinated a lovely range of exotic costumes. The Arabian Nights may not have quite moved me the way UNO’s transcendent production of Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses did. Yet it was still one of this year’s most satisfying nights I have spent in a theater. Here’s to 1,001 more such nights!

food processor 6 times until coarsely chopped, and place in a bowl. Stir in orange rind and remaining ingredients. Cover and chill at least eight hours. ROSEMARY ROASTED ROOT VEGETABLES 8 small red potatoes 4 medium turnips, peeled 4 medium parsnips, peeled 1 small rutabaga, peeled 4 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch pieces 12 shallots, peeled and halved 2 garlic cloves, minced 4 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 3 tablespoon olive oil 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon ground pepper vegetable cooking spray Cut potatoes and next three ingredients into ½ inch cubes. Combine cubed vegetables, carrots, and next six ingredients in a large bowl, tossing to coat. Place vegetable mixture on aluminum foil-lined baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Bake at 425 degrees for one hour or until browned and tender, stirring every twenty minutes. PARMESAN CORN MUFFINS 2 cups white cornmeal mix ¾ cup all-purpose flour ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese ¼ teaspoon cayenne 2 ½ cups fat-free buttermilk ½ cup egg substitute 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Vegetable cooking spray Combine first four ingredients in a large bowl; make a well in the center of mixture. Stir together buttermilk, egg substitute and oil; add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened. Spoon into muffin pans coated with cooking spray, filling two-thirds full. Bake at 425 degrees for fifteen minutes or until golden. Remove from pans immediately.

I

n his ten play cycle about the 20th century African-American experience, August Wilson perceptively explored history, personal mythology, family relationships, and love in many forms. To the best of my knowledge, however, he did not have much experience in electoral politics or real estate, two of the topics covered in his final play, Radio Golf. It is a long play. Had Wilson lived to see its Broadway premiere, he may have edited it. As it stands, though, we get too much talk that doesn’t really advance the plot. More importantly, unlike, say, a David Mamet play in which the dialog has an authentic ring to it, Radio Golf sounds like its author never spent much time in a campaign nor a realty office. Still, in this tale of blacks who sell out and those who honor their history, there are some humorous passages and lovely speeches as when Harmond Wilks, a mayoral candidate in Pittsburgh, describes how he met his future wife Mame in the rain. Director Anthony Bean did an admirable job of bringing life to this too often inert piece and smoothing over those sections where one felt Wilson’s authorial hand trying to make a point rather than letting it rise organically from the characters. Bean was abetted by that fine Wilsonian actor Will Williams as Wilks who, like other Wilson heroes, nobly finds his true self in the course of the play. Gwendolyne Foxworth, another actor born to interpret Wilson’s characters, brilliantly embodied the somewhat And cool on wire racks. For dessert pick up a sugar free pie or two from your local bakery and you have a much lighter holiday fare than usual. Have a great Holiday meal and invite at least eight people to share it with you. You may contact me at donniejay@hotmail.com.

affected Mame; as Wilks’ campaign implodes, Foxworth’s eyes were as eloquent as Wilson’s words as Mame sadly watches her dreams evaporate. Harold X Evans infused Elder Joseph Barlow, the keeper of the Hill District’s legacy, with wonderful humanity and rye cynicism. Donald Lewis, Jr. well-captured the comic aspects of Roosevelt Hicks, a businessman willing to become the “black face” of a corporate enterprise, but tended to be a bit overwrought. Newcomer Lionel J. Jackson was a bit rough around the edges, as was his character Sterling Johnson, an ally of Barlow’s, but he held his own with the pros on stage. At one point, Johnson, as Wilson’s seeming surrogate, describes the African-American community as good blacks (“niggahs”) and bad blacks (“negroes”). As America is on the verge of an epochal change, I hope future playwrights explore this subject with more nuanced shades of gray. Seeing things in simple black and white is becoming so yesterday.

The God of Hell at Delgado Community College

A

fter seeing The God of Hell one might rightly wonder how Sam Shepard came to be acclaimed as a major American dramatist. Oh well, I guess everyone’s allowed an off one. God is Shepard’s none too subtle swipe at the Bush administration and its “Torture’s OK” policy. Emma and Frank, an all-American Wisconsin farm couple, have given shelter to Haynes who had been held in some Guantánamo-like place—or had he been working on a government research project? Welch, a salesman-cum-government agent, shows up and inane chatter soon leads to brutal acts. Shepard trots out such usual topics as our lack of communication and psychic disorientation (“I don’t even know our country any more.”) But in a post-Katrina land, what might have seemed chillingly absurd four years ago when God premiered has an air of the commonplace about it now. Working with a young cast, one wishes Director Kris La Morte had instilled a sense of menace sooner and kept it taut as a piano string throughout; while the third and final scene had the requisite creepiness, the tension flagged in the second one. Still, La Morte brought out the visual humor as when he had Emma dragging oversized planters to barricade the door. As the bewildered hausfrau Emma, Emily Boudreaux was not bad for her first time on stage but she needed to bring greater variance to the way she delivered her lines. Kyle Daigrepont, so good in musical comedies, is not your natural farmer type; still, it was nice to see him stretching his talents. Bill

his has been a time of loss for many of our Community. Dr. Molly Wallick succumbed to cancer. She had moved to Florida to be attended by her son. Dr. Wallick was a brave supporter of the GLBT community long before it was fashionable to have Gay friends. She dedicated her life to the care of children. Julie Thompson and I attended her funeral on a chilly, damp morning. Rabbi Cohn spoke of her service to her Jewish community, her family and the community-at-large. If you have not attended a Jewish burial, you feel stunned as the first clump of dirt hits the coffin which has been lowered to its resting place. Then each friend and loved-one shovels in another, then another until the long line of mourners has covered the top to the coffin. Dust to dust. Next I will attend my aunt’s funeral, we will walk away before the coffin is lowered. I have been thinking about the differences in culture and traditions, and I think being a part of the actual burial could be very healing for some. My Mama Ellen would understand this chop chop ...from Main-17 banana, brown sugar, low fat vanilla ice cream, isopure protein and soy protein. Open 7 days, Mon.-Sat. 10am-8pm and Sunday 10am-6pm. Call 302.1185 for delivery and information. Orleans Grapevine, 720 Orleans, is located in a beautifully renovated 1809 building offering a pleasant atmosphere, extensive wine list with over 350 selections and delicious food including prime steaks, lobster tails and rack of lamb. Serving dinner 5-11pm daily. Call 523.1930 for additional information. Petunias, A Restaurant, 817 St. Louis, is open daily 8am-10pm serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, crepes, poboys, salads, gumbo, Cajun/Creole specialties and dinner. Call 522.6440 for more info. Quartermaster: The Nellie Deli, 1100 Bourbon St., was voted Restaurant/Deli of the Year once again and is open 24 hours 7 days. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the deli offers free delivery. Call 529.1416 to order. Tomatillo's Restaurant, 437 Esplanade Ave., is open Tues., Wed. 11am10pm; Thurs.-Sun. 11am-11pm. The restaurant refers to itself as "A Mexican Joint" featuring appetizers, soups, salads, make your own combination plates, house specialties, burritos, desserts, and of course, specialty margaritas. Call 945.9997 for reservations.

tradition as she was a very spiritual woman. She was 93 years old, and much like a second mother to me from the time I was born. She was supportive throughout my life but never more than when I cameout to my family. She attended Church of Christ the Liberator with Mom and me several times. She accepted my dates, my friends and me with love and warmth. With her passing, I have lost all my family except for a cousin who I have idolized since childhood. He is an older man active in theatre, movies and commercials and much too busy to remember our childhood promise to always be brother and sister. I’m hoping that will change now. The third loss is Roy A. Racca from Jennings, LA. Roy was active in LAGPAC during the early days of the organization. He was a supporter of HIV/ACTS organizations. Roy was loved and admired for his loving and helpful attitude towards all people. An example of Roy’s kindness took place several years ago when a young stranger was told by his grandmother to get out of her house, his home. She gave him the money to take a cab to the Bus Station and slammed the door. The young man, Robbie, called PFLAG. That call lead to Roy who drove two hours to pick Robbie up and bring him to his home for a night’s rest. The next day Roy brought Robbie into New Orleans to stay with Stewart Butler and Alfred Doolittle. No favor was too big for Roy. No youth was denied Roy’s help. These three wonderful people will be missed. The world is a little less bright without these stellar humans. They are examples for us all. They were all what we consider elderly but that was in years only. In heart and mind, these people were young, active and vibrant.

Great effort is going into assisting Louisiana’s Gay citizens in their workplaces and schools. The New Orleans Chapter of PFLAG has offered to work with the ACLU to educated and protect our community. Julie Thompson and I spoke with Marjorie and her assistant in the hopes of forming closer ties. The group was a nice mix of Lesbians, Gay men and Straight supporters. There was a delicious spread of finger foods and wine. The conversations were lively and there was true interest in assisting the ACLU. Local members are needed so that the ACLU can continue their work on our behalf. Please consider becoming a member today.

The Center has several new members on the Board of Directors and it was good to meet and speak with them. It was not a large crowd but it was a fun and happy group that gathered to support the continued service of the Center. The Center is in need of members, paying members. Check them out soon.

Vote This issue is due out on Election Day. I am hoping that everyone in our community will get out to vote and bring a neighbor with them. This is a very important election during difficult financial times. Not voting is a vote for bad government. Don’t let bigotry or confusion stop you from electing Obama president. I’ve heard a lot of terrible excuses for not voting, and they all add up to intolerance and ignorance. Be the best person you can be by voting the issues alone not race or lies.

A New Start?

I

have been hopping mad for the last few months as the election campaign has ground on – hopefully by the time you read this there will be a new president installed and I can take a breath! Despite the fact that I have some VERY strong opinions on who is best to

serve the country – even though I am a foreigner (partly because I am a foreigner!) I am sworn to silence by my denomination (Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches) so that we don’t run foul of the IRS rules for non-profit organizations. The fact that churches are supposed to be non-partisan doesn’t seem to have silenced

numerous New Orleans churches from making endorsements left, right and center. Many churches are at least slightly careful in the way they do this – a Catholic church near us in Carrollton has enormous ‘Vote Pro-life’ signs outside, which may as well be ‘vote Republican’, but lots of churches have thrown discretion to the winds and got behind certain candidates. It has been very interesting to see what criteria they use for endorsing a candidate – it seems that a harsh and generally intolerant position on same-sex marriage trumps personal conduct and morality; the actual character and personal history of the candidate seems secondary to ticking off a list of ‘must disapprove of’ The Servant Leader talking points. The Christian concept (and it is the core of Christianity) of lovingkindness and compassion for the poor, the prisoner, the sick, seems completely irrelevant to many so called religious leaders. Judgment upon human weakness, no matter how incompatible with scripture is warped into mainstream church dogma. There is a leader of a major church here in NOLA that endorsed an anti gay, anti universal healthcare candidate despite having major questions asked about his own sexuality and having large numbers of uninsured people in his congregation. It is not good enough to suspend Christian ethics in the ballot box – but pastors should not have to endorse candidates, they should have so effectively prospered their congregation’s relationships with God that voting for a hatemonger would be inconceivable! Teach the Good News of God’s grace and love for us and people will be moved to compassion in all areas of their lives – including politics. This is really the point of church, and of clergy – to ignite and then encourage a flame of spirituality in people’s lives, and share the growth and encouragement of that flame with each others in a loving and safe environment. Without the personal craving for God, there is no use in teaching folk a load of doctrine that is inappropriate for individuals, and only any good for simplifying the job of the church hierarchy and giving them excessive power over people’s lives. Hopefully, if I were to stand in the pulpit and endorse certain candidates, candidates that taught selfishness and self interest over equality and compassion then I would be bawled off stage! If that is not the case then I have certainly not done my job. The model of Christian leadership is very different that practised many political leaders (especially those who call themselves ‘Christian’ and ‘Family Values’); the concept of the ‘Servant King’ – the one who has power only to serve the powerless is central to Christian theology. Christ taught that in order to be mighty you had to be humble – not self seeking but always seeking for those who cannot control their own destinies – the weak, the sick, the poor, the marginalized. The wealthy and empowered are quite capable of putting food on their tables and looking out for themselves, it is how a society treats those that Jesus described as ‘the least of my children’ that it should be judged. Well, as you will read this after the election, I guess I can safely say who I would vote for if I were able to vote (as a subject of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II I am ineligible). I would vote for whoever gave me dignity as a gay man, for whoever recognized my family and marriage as valid and more importantly, whoever I felt reflected those core Christian beliefs of compassion and lovingkindness – of course, I will leave it to you to work out who that may be……

trodding the boards ...from M-16 Mader, Jr. suitably exploded with pain whenever Welch pulled the switch connected to his gonads. In a gender- and colorblind casting coup, Khephra C. It was the scariest thing I’ve seen this Halloween season.

The Baroness Undressed and The Erect Pronoun at Voodoo Mystére Lounge

D

iana E.H. Shortes’ new solo work The Baroness Undressed is a character study of the strong-willed and self-satisfied Baroness Pontalba who was “sold” by her father into marriage at the age of 15 and was “less than happy of her union with Celestin de Pontalba.” At a time when women had little to say about the destiny of their bodies, after taking four bullets from her fatherin-law (one took off two fingers on her left hand including one still wearing her diamond wedding ring), she packed up, returned to New Orleans, and constructed the Pontalba Apartments bordering Jackson Square. With her flashing eyes, Shortes uses the challenges 19th century women faced in dressing themselves (all those layers!) to make physically manifest the Baroness’ spiritual discomfort. She employed a stately, determined pace and affecting stage business as when a red lace shawl stood in for the blood she spilled. I wouldn’t have minded, however, if Shortes had included a little more information about the Baroness and taken a slightly less stately pace. A work in progress when I saw it at the Voodoo Mystére Lounge, Shortes will be remounting it as part of the New Orleans Fringe Festival. With a little polishing, by then it should be a lovely

jewel of a piece. Continuing on Mondays at the VML thru November 24, is Warren Usey in Robert Patrick’s The Erect Pronoun (née One Person), a 1969 monolog about a young gay man’s unraveling relationship updated with local and present-day references. Unfortunately, Usey is not a great match for this material; he has neither the temperament (he’d be better suited to playing a contemporary 20something) nor the talent (his emotional palette does not do the work full justice) that Pronoun deserves. (I’d love to see Brad Caldwell in it.) Still, Usey acquits himself well enough, affording us the rare opportunity to sense what gay culture and off-off-Broadway offerings were like 40 years or so ago.

F

or those wanting a change of pace from all of Halloween’s gay bois running around the Quarter, Voodoofest in City Park provides lotsa alternative straight boys and a goodly number of lesbians as well as ladies of all types for the womyn. It’s a 3 day, 12 hours a day rock/alt/local music extravaganza. I went this year for the first time mainly to see two groups, R.E.M. and Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. The former, despite visual razzmatazz, were too rock-y for me and I fled to hear Irma Thomas’ classic soul stylings on the Preservation Hall Stage. SJ&tDK, however, lived up to expectations and beyond. Jones is a hypnotizing soul singer who, at a proud 52, has a voice beyond compare and a backfield she can put in motion with the best and youngest of ‘em. She can do Tina Turner, she can do James Brown, but best of all she does her fabulous self as in 100 Days, 100 Nights. And when she answers “How do I let a good man down?” with “Easy” you know she ain’t lying. As a flock of ducks flew in Vformation overhead and with the sun setting behind the Dap Kings on a perfect Fall day, all I could think was “Amy Winehouse isn’t worthy to lick Sharon Jones’ shoes.”

Metropolitan Opera HD Encore/Salome at AMC Elmwood Palace 20

U

nlike the Live Opening Night Gala, no one was wearing black tie at the Met’s HD Encore performance of Salome. And yet, for those unable to make the live Saturday matinee broadcast, the Wednesday evening repeat is a fine option even if it lacks the frisson of excitement that accompanies anything live. After a few minutes of previews, Deborah Voight offered some background information about the opera and then asked headliner Karita Mattila as

Specializing in Historic Properties Full-time Licensed Realtor for 12 years French Quarter Property Owner To Buy, Sell, or Lease, call Mary Lind! Phone 504.948.3011 or 504.581.2020 she emerged from her dressing room if she had anything to say to the viewing audience. En route to the stage, Mattila replied, “Let’s kick some ass.” The camera work of these broadcasts, both backstage and from the front, continues to be amazing allowing us to see what happens behind the curtain. It can obscure, however; we were prevented from seeing the finale of the delirious Dance of the Seven Veils (choreographed by Doug Varone) in which Mattila stood exultantly naked for a few seconds. Otherwise, HD viewers got the full effect of this landmark production of Richard Strauss’ adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s debauched tale of bad people behaving badly reset among the crass present day upper class. And just because it was a repeat didn’t mean that we didn’t have our own live drama. Just as Salome was getting ready to kiss the head of John the Baptist, the screen went blank. We could still hear the gorgeous singing but Mattila’s fearless performance was not to be missed. The audience was not happy. Eventually, it was blamed on an interruption with the satellite system. Management was able to restart the DVR at approximately where it had left off and, to their credit, as we exited, gave out passes for a future screening. Never a dull moment.

A Time for Adjustment: Part Six

I Say A Little Prayer

T

oday is the 29th of October, seven days from tomorrow our nation will have a new President elect. Seven days from tomorrow we will know where this beloved country of ours will be headed. This is a plea to get out the vote. When this paper is published and you read this, it will all be election day. The Electoral College will pick the next leader of the greatest nation on earth, if we can still call it that, hopefully there will be no hanging chads or a bias governor instructing his peons whom to declare the winner. There will be no appointed King of our country. Hopefully that is. There is no way at this late time for any one to tell you I told you so, it was your responsibility to get your ass out and vote. I know that many of you have become disillusioned of the system and to tell you the truth so have I. It is really time to abolish the Electoral College and truly make the one vote for one person really count. It is time to actually elect our leaders ourselves and not elect other people to vote for us. The truth is we have gotten to the point technically that this is a true possibility to accomplish. Let us elect our highest office in the land by popular vote just like we do all our local and state governments. I say a little prayer that this can become a reality within my lifetime.

one last song ...from Ex-5 over in time that if a person finds his one true love he should consider himself exceptional lucky. He was lucky to have found the one, not only once, but twice. In his sleep he tightened his arms around Dale. They slept soundly that night and awoke simultaneously the next morning at the crack of dawn. There was no sounds coming up from the Quarter’s streets, it was as if the entire world was still asleep. As they laid in each other’s grasp Dale turned to face Kevin. “What were you dreaming about last night?” “Dreaming? I have no idea, why do you ask?” Kevin tried to think if indeed he had a dream. “You were mumbling something. As if you were talking to someone, when I got up to relieve myself, it was weird, like someone else was in bed with us.” “You’ve got to be kidding me, there wasn’t anyone here.” “I’m aware of that silly, I wasn’t drunk and you know that I’m not into three-ways, I’ve told you that already. I’m a one person type of guy.” He laughed a bit, to lighten the mood that seemed to be settling over Kevin. “One at a time anyway.” Kevin raised his head from the pillow and planted a kiss firmly on Dale’s lips. “Is that a warning that I better watch my p’s and q’s or you maybe looking elsewhere?” “Not in your lifetime.” Dale swung his legs out of the bed. “Where are you going?” “To start some coffee.” He stood up, his nakedness highlighted by the sun streaming through the slates on the windows. “Lord you look delicious in the early morning.” Dale didn’t comment on that, not this morning. It was things like that, that

when Kevin said them it always led to their morning seductions. Today Dale didn’t want to start off the day with sex, today he wanted to know that wasn’t the only reason that Kevin was keeping him around, the sex, sex was good but at this point and time Dale wanted to make sure it was more than that. There was something that he had held back from telling Kevin and it was time that he did so, but he had to be sure that what they were having was going to last, before he allowed himself to become vulnerable. Growing up for Dale was nothing like it was for most of the other young men he had met since packing up and disappearing from his house in the middle of the night one freezing December two years ago in New England. He disappeared without a trace, not telling any of his friends or relatives, he had planned it well from the very beginning, establishing an alternative identity for himself. Obtaining a social security number different from his own, obtaining another birth certificate with the help of a shady physician he had an affair with. Getting a driver’s license in the state next to his own was a breeze and in less time than he thought it would take he had established a second identity. He became Dale Evans, yea it was a joke, a play on his favorite cowboy’s wife’s name. As a child he fell in love with Roy Rogers watching old serial reruns on the TV. As long as he could remember he only had romantic feelings for men, real or imaginary, and when he confessed this to his own father, his dad flew into an uncontrollable rage, forbidding Dale to ever mention the subject again. From that point on he became a virtual prisoner in his fathers house. As a well known former televangelist and now a respected Senator, his dad would not allow his son to tarnish the family name. With no mother present at home, she had passed away two years before his

announcement, nor brothers or sisters; they had all gone on to colleges or married. He was forced to live in isolation, and so he hatched a plan and carried it out. Once he had disappeared, it became news worthy and was reported nationally in all the papers, there were no clues, had he been kidnapped, a victim of foul play? Murder perhaps? Just what had happened that night no one could figure out? He quickly traveled out of state and took up living among the gutter punks of his generation and just blended in. He was happy with his life as it was then. He unlike many of his new gutter punk kin, did work and earned monies to keep him going. When he was in a town large enough, like here in New Orleans, he would always hook up with a kind gentleman and live with them for awhile till the urge hit him to move on and that was how he had been living. But once he met Kevin that all began to change, he was happy and truly felt that this was it, that this would be a lasting thing. Now his past was haunting him. If he was to spend too much time here and settle down, would his past come back to haunt him and what havoc could his father cause for his love? He couldn’t stand the thought of what his father would and could do to destroy this man that he loved. That man that had followed them last night, through the Quarter from dinner at Petunias, down Royal Street and still onward in the shadows of the old buildings that lined the street to their home, who was he? Though he was sure that Kevin thought he had entered the restaurant bar across from the gallery they had stopped in front of on Royal Street and had stayed there. He had seen him hovering a block or so behind them. Was that stranger someone his father had hired to find him? A private-eye perhaps? He could not be sure and he hated the thoughts that were running though his mind as he prepared the morning coffee. Should he come up with an excuse to send Kevin on an errand to get something from Rouse’s grocery, pack and flee while he was out? Vanish as he had done in the past. If that man was following him last night, it might be the best thing to do, rather than stay here and be responsible for God knows what? It saddened him to even have these thoughts and started him having stressful butterflies in his stomach. He was standing by the kitchen counter just watching the coffee pot drip, when Kevin came up behind him and wrapped his arm’s around his neck; he almost jumped out of his skin. “A bit jumpy this morn-

ing are we my dear?” “I didn’t hear you even get out of bed, you startled me, nothing else.” “We are out of cream, would you mind running to get some? I don’t feel like putting clothes on this morning.” “I was just thinking the same thing myself; it sure would spoil the morning to put any clothing on at all.” “But neither of us like our coffee black.” “Let’s just skip the coffee.” “It’s almost ready, come on don’t be so lazy, I’ll have breakfast ready when you get back.” “If you insist.” Kevin threw on shorts, a t-shirt and sandals and headed out the door. As soon as Dale heard the gate close he hurried to the bedroom, took his bag out of the closet and began to throw his belongings into it. He barely had anything in it when he heard Kevin call from the doorway. “Toss a towel around you, we have company.” Panicking he tossed his bag in the closet dashed into the bathroom, draped a towel over his mid-section and walked into the kitchen. He almost gasped audibly; there standing in the kitchen with Kevin was the man from last night. He froze in his steps and stood there like a deer caught in a set of headlights. “Dale, this is an old friend of mine from long ago in my past. Kenny this is Dale.” Kenny extended his hand moving towards Dale; Dale took it and shook it, releasing the towel around his waist dropping it to the floor. Kenny smiled. “You’re a lucky son of a bitch Kevin. But then again the fates have always been good to you.” “Starting with you my dear Kenny, starting with you.” They both laughed. “Sit down Kenny, we were just going to have some coffee, I was just on my way to get some cream.” Dale picked the towel up and rewrapped it around his waist, this time securing it better. “You don’t have to, I spotted some creamer on the top shelf.” Dale got three mugs from the countertop and served the coffee. “You have know idea how surprised I was to spot you in that restaurant last night as I was passing by. I thought it was you, but I wasn’t to sure, so I waited and followed you. Then when you stopped I was sure of myself. I almost called out to you then.” “Why didn’t you?” “I wasn’t sure that you’d remember me.” “You’d be surprised at how much I remember, I even remember that ONE LAST SONG we danced to all those years ago.” “Really?” Dale questioned, “I’d love to hear all about that.” “And so you will my dear.” Kevin took his hand and kissed it. “So you will.” To be continued. Wonderful Wes

I

love to observe, take mental notes, and then talk with some one about their life, their goals, and their friends or lovers. You can learn a lot by listening, watching, remembering, and then telling everyone what you have learned. From past columns, I’m sure you’ve noticed this technique. I don’t make perfect analyses, but they are near perfect anyway, and if it shows someone that they are wonderful human beings, then it is all worthwhile. Let’s take a look at wonderful and

Splash’s gorgeous Wes

gorgeous Wes. This guy is just a sheer joy to watch. He has such a bubbling personality that you (or at least in my case) wish you were back in that age bracket and enjoying his company. I noticed him on earlier visits to Splash, and I wondered how I would approach him to do a mini-interview. This attempt started out at the pool table (not on it, darlings) and graduated back to behind the bar for a sexy pose without his shirt. It was a great way to start off the interview. Wes, as you can see, works out and is proud of that body. If I looked like that, I’d be hanging out all over the place. This young man just oozes with a charm that makes you want to reach out and hug him. He is absolutely one of the most charismatic youngsters I’ve met in a long time. Once you get to know him, he has a masterful technique of maneuvering you into doing what he wants and not what you set out to do. That is a good character trait. It’s like taking the bull by the horns and maneuvering your way forward, or in this case, his way forward. As far as his goals, I’d have to say they are very good ones to be looking forward to, especially in the education category.

He is a marketing major at the University of New Orleans, and he calls LaPlace his home base. That means that some of his work days are very stressful. He gets up early, heads out to UNO, takes time to work out at school and at a gym in LaPlace, and drive up to Red Stick for a little work time at Splash. I’d say that he has a way of juggling his schedule to make it work out the best for him, and those who have the opportunity to know him find him to be that outwardly pleasant and friendly little stud who can charm the pants off you in a hurry. (And I use that phrase loosely.) All I can say is that he is simply adorable, sexy as sexy can get, and that body is to die for. Whether he is working at a job or working toward that degree, I would have to think that anyone being in his presence comes away with a better understanding of what being around a magnificent human being is all about. His smile is contagious. His laughter is outstanding. His eyes are beautiful entrances to his very being. He is simply a gorgeous young man with a bright future, and he knows what he has to do to reach that future goal. Wes is really a wonderful youngster, filled with a lust for life and a love for his friends that reaches out and grabs

you instantly. I really like this one.

Fabulous Assets

P

arties have already been going on around Red Stick, all leading up to Halloween, and these are only one of the classification of pleasurable assets in our city. I have to admit that Halloween isn’t my favorite holiday, but with that said, I can still enjoy by watching and admiring all the hard work that so many people put into this day. It’s amazing to see the unusual costumes that come into play, and I have to admire those who put so much of the creativity into the designs. For the past few years, one persons stand out as having the most authentic costume, but then he is a very creative artisan and the results show in his designs. This would be none other than a sexy guy named Hanley. He completely disappears into his designs, and he becomes the character he has created. This year will prove me right in this. In fact, I’ve just seen a picture at one of the parties I couldn’t attend, and I would recognize that threesome immediately. Those bear guys really know how to do it up right, and Hanley’s handiwork shows through in excellent [continued on Expose-17]

Red Stick’s hottest couple Stephen & Ty

hot tails of red stick ...from Ex-8 style. Joy’s pajama party wasn’t really a Halloween delight, but it was a delight just the same, and, who knows, maybe some people really go out that way. At any rate, when it’s Joy who throws a party, you have to know that it’s a good one. When you have such a fun-loving personality, everyone around gets in the mood. Joy does that to anyone stopping in at Hound Dogs. When it comes to decorating houses, I always take a look at Jerry’s home on Spanish Town Road, across from Capitol Grocery. There is always something going on here. Sometimes the guys just gather around for some drinks and friendly banter. Other times, there is a celebration going on – holidays, birthdays, or big cookouts. Whatever the occasion, Jerry does it up right. Josie’s home next door is also a nice addition to any holiday season. With that screened in porch, she can pretty much take it month by month, but you don’t really see the end results unless you go by at night. I’ll be going around the neighborhood on Halloween night, and I’ll try to get a picture with the lights on and this sweetheart passing out candy to the little ones. Maybe I can get a tasty tidbit for myself. If you really want to see some fabulous decorations, Splash is the place to see. I don’t know who takes care of

this dance emporium, but you have to be there to experience the feel of the season, any season. As for me, I don’t go there for the decorations unless you consider the sexy bartenders as decorations. I just find each one to be totally different, and it is always a pleasure to talk with them, photograph them, and drool a little too. I got to meet Landon last week. He has taken over Ben’s duties as photographer, and when I caught up with him he was sharing door duties with Scott. There’s more security working now since Gustav blew through. Most of the fences around the facility were blown down, and then the boards miraculously disappeared into the surrounding neighborhood. Now feature that. It will be nice when they all go back up. The loss of privacy on the outside is evident especially at the front entrance, but with all those sexy security guys, perhaps this is a good thing. Robert and Brandon did the Voodoo Music Festival last week and met up with out-of-town friends to enjoy all the festivities. Rhonda and Celia from South Carolina and Chris from Atlanta joined our sexy Red Stick studs. The weather cooperated, and they all had a wonderful time shuffling between seeing some of the big name music acts in City Park and enjoying spending time at the local bars in the French Quarter and the Marigny. They also noted lots of other Red Stickers down for the festival

and also the big Halloween New Orleans circuit party and benefit for Project Lazarus. It was the 25th year for this event, and it was aptly named the Silver Party. Local establishments were teaming with Baton Rouge neighbors and lots of exceptionally cute out-oftowners, all in for the big party weekend. Johnny is keeping everything going great at Hound Dogs. He always has this marvelous smile that just shows you how much you are welcomed to this bar. They’ve also added Wednesday night karaoke, and Johnny reports that business is booming for this night of revelry. With all the great drink bargains and having Miss Jeanne sitting on her throne, all seems to be going very nicely at this Main Street hangout. Last week when I stopped by, someone else had her spot, and the entire room looked out of place. Those guys should be ashamed booting her out of her spot. The nerve of some people! Coco keeps me updated on the comings and goings of her “hot pack” of karaoke and dinner gang. They always have so much fun, and just watching them is a joy to behold. Coco has such a beautiful voice too. I could sit around for hours listening to her, but if I did, I’d have to crawl home. Karaoke and drinks just seem to go together, and you sometimes lose track of time until the crawling takes place. Karaoke at George’s is always

great fun. Cody does a big show each week, and lots of good talent comes through on that stage. They also have nice dancers on the bar, and Eric is an excellent example of this. I love a guy with a little hair on his chest, and the package that goes with it is also exceptionally nice. He’s a cutie. Maybe I should do a mini-interview with him. Hmmm. I ran into Chica LaRouge at Splash last week, and I have to tell you that this is one talented guy. I think he proved his credibility when he made it to the Miss Gay America Pageant. All I can say is that “she” looked fabulous last week when I talked with her. It was the first time that I recall seeing an outfit and hairdo that showed so much sophistication. The colors of the outfit were nice, and the makeup was impeccable. She looked damned good! Chica is a good example of what having fun is all about, but there is this serious side too which I think I like even more. If you get the chance to catch one of the shows from the Divas, by all means catch it. There is lots of talent there just waiting to pleasure you.

T

oday is Election Day across the United States for a Presidential Race that has been long and significant. By time another issue is released, we should have elected a new president, and hopefully be kinder to the Gay Community than Bush has been these last eight years. Since the 90s, I have watched my civil liberties dwindle, along with any hope I had for being treated equally in the “Land of Equality.” I am hopeful that this Presidential Election will begin to set things right. If you haven’t voted yet, there is still time. Go to the Polls and let your voice be heard. If we learned anything in 2000, it’s that every vote counts. Besides politics, Acadiana has had

a lot going on in its nightlife. Halloween was as wild as ever, and I know you all had an incredible time at Sound Factory’s giant Halloween Bash. But the party isn’t over. Halloween marks the beginning of the Celebration Season. From now until well into the new year, there will be a seemingly endless barrage of wild celebrations. Right around the corner is Thanksgiving, which is quickly followed by Christmas. Then there’s the New Year and Mardi Gras. For the next few months, Lafayette will transform into an even more festive environment. And Sound Factory and Back Side are here to make sure the party never ends. While you’re waiting around for the next big celebration, don’t forget

That doesn’t stop his personal trainer from stopping by. That is one outstandingly sexy trainer who just bubbles over with a great personality. He stopped and talked with me last week while I was out walking my dog, and I could hardly contain my excitement. Sitting in that truck was a living, breathing dreamboat - the answer to any gay man’s lustful object of affection. How can anyone so straight be so sexy? Maybe I should ask him while I’m giving him a massage. I also hear Lance has been under the weather. I left before he arrived at Splash last week, and I also missed seeing that sexy couple Stephen and Ty. I guess you have to say they are objects of my lustful desires, which is a compliment, and I can throw in Corey, Brad, David, Wes, Dan, Quentin, Luther, Michael, and several others into the mixture. They are all great guys, and I always enjoy seeing them. I’ve been a little silent on Luther lately, but I feel something coming on. Get ready Luther. Shall we discuss it over dinner?

and John needs a margarita to relax. You don’t find margaritas any better than those at El Rio Grande, and the food is made to order, nothing frozen and warmed over here. It’s as fresh as you can get, and everyone at the restaurant is friendly and helpful. You can tell when your business is appreciated, and I don’t know of another place that gives you such a homey atmosphere. Lots of “happy” people can be seen here on just about any night except Monday, when it is closed. Sam has noticed an increase in interest in the VHS film he has in stock. It’s some of the XXX stock that was at Hibiscus Bookstore with lots of new ones added since the bookstore closed. He also sells lots of gay books, old and new, but since he deals with antiques mainly, you will find that a lot of his items fall into the collectible category. His shop is located at the corner of Weller and Pawtucket, right off Plank Road. You will recognize it when you get there. I got a note from Sweet William last week, so I’m looking for him to pay me a visit soon. It’s been too long, sweetie. With the change in the weather pattern, we may have to drink our wine inside instead of on my porch, but that would be fine. Your presence is always a nice part of my day. Gerry has been too silent lately. I wonder what he is up to. His new job is keeping him busy, but that shouldn’t rule out a nice bottle of wine over dinner. I need to give this sweetheart a call and set something up. Sexy David of Bungalow Lane fame is recovering from surgery, and it will be several more weeks before he can get back to bike riding and working out.

about Sound Factory and Back Side’s unbeatable Fall Line-up. They are open seven days a week and always have something wild going on. Every Monday you can compete in the weekly Pool Tournament at Back Side. If you’re good with a stick, come by and show off your talent. Whether you win or lose, it’s always a great time. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. His charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. Back by popular demand, Wednesday nights is Lube Wrestling, and while it may yet to be an Olympic sport, it is definitely one of the sexiest events of the week. And of course, you’re always welcome to participate. If you can wrestle, or just like to get all lubed up, come by early and sign up. If you win, there’s always fabulous prizes. Thursday is Lady’s Night at Sound Factory, but if you’re a guy, don’t worry, the Back Side will always have some specials for you too. Friday Nights are the ever popular Dance Party where you can get out on the floor and go wild to some of the best music around. Then on Saturday you can be entertained by the ever popular Show Night. Each week there’ll be special

entertainment to liven up the Lafayette Nightlife. And who could forget Sundays with its twelve hours of fun and festivities? It begins at noon on Back Side with their Sunday Lunch Buffet and continues that night with the infamous Drag Races at Sound Factory. By midnight you’re ready for a good nights sleep since it all starts over again the next day. All in all, Sound Factory and Back Side make sure that no matter what night of the week you hit the Downtown, there’s always something festive going on. The next few months should be an incredible time in Acadiana. And no matter what happens in the election, at least the Bush Era is coming to an end. So come out and celebrate. Support the gay community. Sound Factory and Back Side are gay owned and operated; so every time you visit it’s helping the community and sending a message. It shows that we know how to take care of ourselves, that we’ll stick together. There are always going to be other establishments that try to exploit us to make money. Just ask yourself if you want to support bars that give nothing back to the gay community. It’s easy to say you’re a gay bar if it makes you money. The real test is the one that really helps the community, and that’s what the Sound Factory and Back Side do. Show your pride and support them too. Until next time, have fun and be safe. I ’ll see you around town.

worship service on Sunday, December 7, and will be visiting for other activities during the December 6-7 celebration weekend. Other events planned for the celebration weekend include a concert, a variety of entertainment and an anniversary reception at 7pm on Saturday, December 6, at MCCBR’s building at 7747 Tom Drive in Baton Rouge. Rev.

Troy Perry’s living room 40 years ago now has grown into an international phenomenon with approximately 300 churches and more than 40,000 members around the world,” said Rev. Keith Mozingo, pastor of MCC of Baton Rouge. “We’re proud to be a part of that here at MCC of Baton Rouge.” The Baton Rouge church officially held its first worship service on December 4, 1983 – and now is about to mark 25 continuous years of serving the Baton Rouge community. “I’m glad to call Rev. Troy Perry a friend, and we’re glad he’s going to be with us to celebrate the anniversary of our church in Baton Rouge,” Mozingo said. “Now that Troy is retired, this definitely is a special blessing, so you don’t want to miss this rare opportunity to meet him and hear from him.” For more details on the anniversary weekend – and other activities of MCC of Baton Rouge – visit www.mccbr.org.
