nd what it is is a parody pastiche of those old 1940’s MGM B-movie musicals everybody rushed to see on Saturday afternoons. It’s called Onepiece and it’s running at the Marigny Theatre, 1030 Marigny Street, Wednesday - Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 6pm. The show continues Wednesday, Nov. 19th and plays the 20th, 21st, 23rd, 29th and 30th. According to Ambush Theatre/ Performing Arts Critic Patrick Shannon's review in this edition on Main-22, "Bitch lines abound and the performers seem to enjoy the verbal swordplay as each player gets a chance to prick a bit of blood from the ballooned egos of the characters." Imagine you’re a small-town gal with a steady beau and a simple dream of one day becoming a veterinarian. Into your bucolic world cannonballs the buoyant star of the Aquacade, the no-longeryoung Hester Willings, who has a thing for other girls’ steadies. Will you learn to swim with the sharks? Onepiece features two-time Big Easy Theatre Award Winner Cammie West, local cabaret favorite Chris Wecklein, electrifying newcomer Wendy Michaels, and the flawless musical direction of Jim Walpole. Director Glenn Meche has finally loosened up enough to present a work of staggering fluff. For reservations, call 504.948.9608, or just come to the box office to purchase your ticket. They’re $25 for the general public, less if you’re old enough to remember going to see these movies back in the day. The Marigny Theatre, LLC and To Do Productions produced this play.

Orleans Gay Ameircan Smoke Out on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 5-8pm. The New Orleans LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender) community will observe Gay American Smoke Out to bring attention to the health consequences of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure among the LGBT community and the ways the tobacco industry overtly targets the LGBT population, support tobacco users with the information and tools they need to quit, and celebrate LGBT businesses that have voluntarily elected to go smoke-free. The event will take place at the corner of Bourbon and St. Ann Streets in the French Quarter and at the following bars: Napoleon’s Itch, 734 Bourbon; Oz, 800 Bourbon; Bourbon Pub, 801 Bourbon; Rawhide, 740 Burgundy; Good Friends Bar, 740 Dauphine and Café Lafitte in Exile, 901 Bourbon. LGBT are 40-70% more likely to smoke. Studies repeatedly yield LGBT smoking prevalence rates that are 35% to almost 200% higher than the general population. LGBT adolescents are taking up smoking at an alarming rate – a recent national study showed that 45% of females and 35% of males smoke in comparison to 29% of the rest of the youth. The American Cancer Society estimates that over 30,000 LGBT people die each year of tobacco related diseases. In the past two decades, the tobacco industry began targeting members of LGBT community – a loyal and virtually untapped market according to Overlooked Opinion, a market research company that specializes in the LGBT community. Research shows that 94% of the LGBT population will support/buy products that advertise in the LGBT community. While the Louisiana Smoke-Free Air Act eliminated smoking from most places in Louisiana, secondhand smoke remains a serious health threat to many workers, particularly those who work in bars and casinos. Hospitality workers and musicians breathe 4 to 6 times more secondhand smoke than any other type of worker, [continued on Main-6]

Prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke exposure increases a worker’s risk for developing emphysema, lung cancer, asthma, and heart disease. In fact, breathing just 30 minutes of secondhand smoke has the same effect as smoking a cigarette yourself. Making the decision to quit using tobacco is a critical first step toward conquering nicotine addictions. Louisiana offers a comprehensive online cessation source — www.QuitWithUsLA.org – to help tobacco users access proven cessation tools and programs in a single location that can help them quit successfully — in their own way and on their own terms. The Web site is a joint initiative of The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Tobacco

Control Program (TCP). The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Tobacco Control Program (LTCP) coordinate their efforts in tobacco prevention and control by providing statewide coordination of existing tobacco control initiatives, funding innovative community programs for tobacco control, offering services for people who are ready to quit and developing statewide media campaigns to help reduce the excessive burden of tobacco use on the state’s resources and improve the overall health and quality of life in Louisiana. New Orleans AIDS Memorial Dedication Set for Nov. 30

T

he dedication of the New Orleans AIDS Memorial will give the greater New Orleans

community a chance to view the unveiling of the memorial, a moving piece of art designed by Brian Borillo and constructed by Erica Larkin and Mitchell Gaudet. Immediately following the dedication ceremony, guests will be allowed to leave flowers at the site as well as view the memorial brick circle and benches, of which the varied dedications reflect the impact that this disease has had on the community. The Memorial is in Washington Square Park, Frenchmen Sreet between Dauphine and Royal Streets, and will be dedicated on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2pm by the New Orleans AIDS Memorial Committee. The New Orleans AIDS Memorial will provide a healing sanctuary for family and friends and will promote understanding of the human tragedy of the AIDS epidemic. The goal for the monument is to create a public landscape where anyone who has been touched

by AIDS can find comfort and consolation within a dignified and creative community setting. The memorial, made of concentric bronze circles framing inspirational multicultural cast glass faces, will provide a powerful yet comforting reminder of the meaning behind the memorial. Leading up to the memorial, a pathway of granite stones, inscribed with names of loved ones, will allow visitors to reflect on the way this disease has forever transformed our world.

Civil Rights Groups Petition Calif. Supreme Court to Stop Enactment of Prop 8

L

OS ANGELES - Civil rights groups filed a petition Nov. 14 with the California Supreme Court to stop the enactment of Proposition 8 because it would mandate discrimination against a minority group and did not follow the process required for fundamental revisions to the California Constitution. In the petition, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Equal Justice Society, California NAACP and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. argue that in order to protect the fundamental rights of all Californians, a higher standard is required to overturn the right to marry. Minority communities cannot be stripped of their fundamental rights by a simple majority vote. “We would be making a grave mistake to view Proposition 8 as just affect[continued on Main-8]

President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. “We cannot become a society that picks and chooses who is entitled to equal rights,” said Alice A. Huffman, president of the California State NAACP. “We should include all people from all walks of life in the entitlement to all freedoms now enjoyed by the majority of our population As a civil rights advocate, we will continue the fight of eliminating roadblocks to freedom.” “Consistent with core equal protection principles, minority communities must not be stripped of their fundamental rights by bare majority rule,” said Karin Wang, Vice-President of Programs for the Asian Pacific American Legal Center. “California went down this path before when the majority population chose to bar interracial marriages involving an unpopular minority: Asian immigrants. The state Constitution exists exactly for this reason - to protect the fundamental rights of minority communities.” “Let’s not forget the landmark 1967 case of Loving v. Virginia, which allowed two people of different races to marry,” said Paterson of the Equal Justice Society. “People then believed it was acceptable to keep Mildred Loving from marrying a white man because of their ideas of who should marry whom. We must not return to those times.” the "official" dish ...from Main-6 ing the LGBT community,” said Eva Paterson, president of the Equal Justice Society. “If the Supreme Court allows Proposition 8 to take effect, it would represent a threat to the rights of people of color and all minorities.” The petition filed by Raymond C. Marshall of Bingham McCutchen and Prof. Tobias Barrington Wolff of University of Pennsylvania Law School on behalf of leading African American, Latino, and Asian American groups echo the arguments made in the November 5 lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, Lambda Legal and the Na-

tional Center for Lesbian Rights: Proposition 8 prevents the courts from exercising their essential constitutional role of enforcing the equal protection rights of minorities. The California Constitution requires that any measure attempting to revise the underlying principles of the constitution must first be approved by a two-thirds vote of the legislature before being submitted to the voters. Proposition 8 was not approved through that constitutionally required process. “Proposition 8 contradicts the most basic protection guaranteed by the California Constitution, which is the right to equal protection of the laws,” said John Trasvia, President and General Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. “We can not allow the Constitution to sanction discrimination against one group of people.” “Direct democracy cannot override the California Constitution, which requires more than a majority vote to deprive a minority group of their fundamental rights,” said John A. Payton,

The court has precedent for invalidating an improper voter initiative. In 1990, the court overruled an initiative that would have added a provision to the California Constitution stating that the “Constitution shall not be construed by the courts to afford greater rights to criminal defendants than those afforded by the Constitution of the United States.” That measure was invalid because it improperly attempted to strip California’s courts of their role as independent interpreters of the state’s constitution. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (naacpldf.org) was founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall. Although LDF’s primary purpose was to provide legal assistance to poor African Americans, its work over the years has brought greater justice to all Americans. Founded in 1968, MALDEF (maldef.org), the nation’s leading Latino legal civil rights organization, promotes and protects the rights of Latinos through litigation, advocacy, community education and outreach, leadership development, and higher education scholarships. The Asian Pacific American Legal Center (apalc.org) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for civil rights, providing legal services and education, and building coalitions to positively influence and impact Asian Pacific Americans and to create a more equitable and harmonious society. APALC is affiliated with the Asian American Justice Center, the Asian American Institute in Chicago, and the Asian Law Caucus in San Francisco. The Equal Justice Society (equaljusticesociety.org) is a national strategy group heightening conscious on race in the law and popular discourse. Using a threepronged strategy of law and public policy advocacy, cross-disciplinary convenings and strategic public communications, EJS seeks to restore race equity issues to the national consciousness, build effective progressive alliances, and advance the discourse on the positive role of government. Transgender Support

T

hursday, Nov. 20 is the celebration of the Transgender Day of Remembrance. The Lesbian & Gay Community Center of New Orleans is observing this day with a reception at the Center and a March to the Joan d’Arc Statue on Decatur Street. The event begins at 6pm and will conclude at 8pm. The march begins at 6:45pm. After a very short program at the statue where Pastor Clinton of MCC and Fr. Michael Des Jardins of Church of Christ the Liberator will speak, marchers will return to the Center for light snacks and the opportunity to speak openly about the Transgender Community in New Orleans. This is an important remembrance that has been organized by Ernesto Finales Amanda Smith. There have been 21 murders worldwide of transgender people since last year’s day of remembrance. If you enjoy the right to cross-dress or perform as a Drag Queen or live as the gender into which you were not born, you should attend. If you support those who crossdress or you attend Drag Shows, you should attend this event. We in the GLBT community beg support from our families, friends, elected officials and churches. We need to “stick together” for Civil Rights for everyone in our Community. For additional information, please call Ernesto at 985.703.2064. th

Joking Around

R

andy Trahan and I were visiting one afternoon, and I was complaining about gaining back some of the 30 pounds that I’ve lost this year. I guess I should do more strenuous exercises, I told him. Yeah, Randy said, you could do push-ups like a friend of mine. I told him that I didn’t think I could do one pushup. Sure you can, he offered, do them like my friend; he lies on his fat belly and rolls back and forth. Since his chest doesn’t touch the floor, he considers that a push-up. That’s one exercise I know I can do. So what’s your column about this week, he asked. I don’t know, I answered, I am just not inspired. It’s too late for the Center’s Reel Identities at the CAC and I don’t have any info on Project Lazarus’ event on the 30th, I continued. What! Randy yelled, you aren’t going to write about the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. So here goes – the good is that we elected Obama president along with Mary Landrieu and Leon Cannizzaro.

The bad is that California and other states repealed the right of same-sex partners to marry. The ugly is William Jefferson. How the hell could the citizens of New Orleans re-elect someone who is awaiting trial for malfeasance in office? If you opened my freezer, all you would find is ice. And don’t tell me that he is a friend to the GLBT Community. If you are Gay and a thief, I say, send you to prison whether you are a likeable guy or not. Why treat heterosexuals otherwise? I apologize for the rant. But this election made me crazy. Let’s look at the Forum and their dual endorsement for District Attorney. If you have two people that are both good for the City and can do the job the people need, you should endorse only the one that is good on GLBT issues. I reported on both men running and only one was good on our issues; thankfully he was elected. I do believe that it is good for America to have Obama leading our country. I am excited about the way he has started his service. Of course we all know that Obama cannot get anything done without the support of Congress. Our presidents get blamed for many problems that they cannot control. So if you have an issue with the government, I urge you to write your Congressperson. Speaking of which, Mary has always been good for our state. I am saddened at the way the Republican Party smeared her good name. I am joyful that the citizens of Louisiana didn’t fall for the negative ads. Don’t you hate those ads? He attacks her so she fires back. And on and on it goes until no one wants to listen to either candidate. That means we stop listening to facts as well as hate ads. Thanks to the Internet it is easy to get factual information on the candidates without having to listen to the nonsense. But every election it gets more difficult to educate and inform those who don’t want to do the work of getting the facts themselves. It is truly bad and I do mourn the loss of freedom for GLBT married couples. This was a huge step backward. How could the so called liberal people of California do such a heinous act? To me, it is like telling all males with blue eyes that they can no longer vote because the people of the state don’t like blue eyed men. To remove our rights without consideration is an abomination. Sometimes Americans forget that this is the home of the free; they forget about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” I remember when I was a child and

white people talked about giving black people Alabama and Georgia and keeping them out of the other 48 states. If that is the way people feel about the GLBT community, I say let’s take northern California and southern New York and Louisiana, and leave the homophobes the rest. With our luck, we’d get Montana and Wisconsin. I’ve already voiced my opinion about the ugly. It is politically expedient not to say more. But don’t doubt that I have more to say. After all, I worked on two of Jefferson’s campaigns. Even uglier than Jefferson was the election of Guidry. He believes the GLBT community should have no rights from the things he has said in public ads and speeches. Ah, what’s done is done and if we can pull

together next election, we might see more progress.

Slumdog Millionaire

I

have recently reviewed this film which was made in India and the UK. It is a tragic drama that spans 20 years in the life (from childhood to young man) of our hero. Although the ending is lovely and sweet and the one you are wishing for, most of the film deals with poverty, inhumane treatment, sadness and loss of spirit. It is worth seeing. It is historical in ways that we don’t readily learn about. The message is one of hope and innocence amid desperate times. I guess the best thing I could say is that I’d pay to see SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE!

he Great American SmokeOut, November 20, is a time for our community to come together to support tobacco users who are ready to quit, remind our community about the health consequences of secondhand smoke exposure, and celebrate local businesses that have voluntarily elected to go smoke-free. The Louisiana Smoke-Free Air Act, passed last year by our state legislature, eliminated smoking in most public places, but excluded bars and casinos. Secondhand smoke in those arenas still poses a serious health threat to many patrons and workers. The LGBT community has some of the highest rates of smoking compared to other populations. Our community is faced with various pressures, including self-esteem issues, peer acceptance issues, as well as the bar culture (which provides a non-discriminatory environment). Knowing this, the tobacco industry actively targets members of the LGBT community and has profited from such. Tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure can cause a variety of life-threatening illnesses, and can accelerate the process whereby HIV becomes AIDS. It is time for our state legislature and the City of New Orleans to get on board with other big cities and pass a law prohibiting smoking in bars and casinos. To support this effort, the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living, Human Rights Campaign and NO/AIDS Task Force will be hosting the first “Gay American Smoke-Out” on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 5-8pm, at Napoleon’s Itch (734 Bourbon St.) at the corner of Bourbon and St. Ann. Oz, Bourbon Pub/Parade, Good Friends Bar, Café Lafitte in Exile and Rawhide will also be participating in the SmokeOut, offering drink specials from 5-8 pm and going smoke-free that evening. Come enjoy a drink and show your

Amendment 2 — A Futile Effort to Delay the Inevitable by Howard L. Simon he vote approving Amendment 2 — the so-called mar riage-protection amendment — was a devastating but temporary setback for the cause of equal treatment for all. By a 1.9 percent margin, Florida voters prohibited allowing same-sex couples the opportunity to have their relationships legally protected, denying the religious institution of their choice the authority of law “invested in the institution” to bless the relationship. Arizona and California also voted to add a ban on same-sex marriage to their state constitutions. Despite the propaganda, gay marriage was not on the ballot. What Floridians approved was a prohibition on the legal recognition of anything “that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof.” It will take years of lawsuits and countless lawyers to sort out the intended and unintended consequences of this measure. The forces behind Amendment 2 have said that their mission is accomplished; marriage has been protected. But none of the economic and social pressures on marriage that have resulted in the terribly high divorce rate have been addressed. That would have been an honest program to “protect marriage.” It remains a mystery how the institution of marriage is “protected” by denying the right of some people the ability to enjoy its benefits. Despite its passage, Amendment 2 does not bar health or other benefits that same-sex couples currently re-

serve all voters irrespective of race, sex, orientation or faith. It works worst when it is asked to make decisions that rely upon some sort of specialized knowledge – for example, the reality of life in segregatedAmerica as anAfrican American, or the reality of life in 2008 as an LGBT person; a person who is treated as a second or third class citizen despite being expected to pay the same taxes and abide by the same laws.

The Triumph and Failure of Democracy

I

n one extraordinary night the American people and the world have been shown the triumph of democracy in the election of the son of a Kenyan goatherder to the most powerful post in the world, and the squalid limits of the democratic process in the removal of a minority’s basic human rights by an ill informed and hoodwinked majority. In Barack Obama’s case the people chose brilliance and inspiration over fear and prejudice, in the case of California it now seems that the success of the infamous Proposition 8 was largely carried by communities that were ill served by their faith leaders. It is a horrible irony to see an African American electorate that rightly led the call for civil rights now effectively saying “Only my civil rights! Not yours!” When the care and nurture of human rights are concerned, the will of the majority has proved an unsatisfactory pair of hands. Switzerland is arguably the most democratic country in the e-mail/letters ...from Main-16 ceive from public or private employers. Neither does the amendment prohibit hospital visitation, medical decisionmaking, or the right to make funeral arrangements for a deceased loved one. But should other zealots target these benefits, or should any government agency decide — wrongly — that Amendment 2 prohibits these benefits, we will move this battle from the voting booth to the courtroom. In America, change that matters always faces resistance; its path is never smooth or easy. America is in the middle of a civilrights revolution that is different, but shares similarities with earlier struggles to make the Constitution’s promise of equality a reality for women, for racial minorities, for people with disabilities — for everyone. It is important to appreciate how far we have come, and how quickly. Thanks to even a very conservative U.S. Supreme Court, it is no longer a crime to be gay in America. Within 17 years (from Bowers v. Hardwick in 1986 to Lawrence v. Texas in 2003), the Supreme Court reversed itself and declared that states could not criminalize sexual intimacy among same-sex couples. The world is changing. The forces behind Amendment 2 can delay the inevitable, but they cannot stop it.

world- huge numbers of issues are put to plebiscite every year – the will of the majority almost always rules. A consequence of this is that in certain Swiss cantons, women were not given the vote until the 1970’s! How many optimists think that the Deep South would have voted for desegregation in the 1960’s? If it had not of been for LBJ and the Supreme Court, Apartheid would probably have lingered in many states for decades longer – maybe even to the present day. If Mississippi, for example, had been allowed to pass an amendment to their constitution outlawing interracial marriage the nation would look very different, it would be a patchwork of elected bigotry; sometimes the people need a strong example of what is right and what is wrong from leaders who have troubled themselves to become informed on the subject. The LGBT minority in the USA thinks deeply about issues of love, marriage, childcare and faith as it affects them – we cannot expect heterosexuals unaffected by those issues to think as deeply, therefore their opinion is often kneeSoon, same-sex marriage will be legal and ordinary. It is already happening; Ontario, several northern Europe countries, Spain, South Africa and, as of this writing, Massachusetts and Connecticut, allow same-sex marriage. New York and Rhode Island recognize such marriages that are conferred elsewhere. Bigotry and prejudice frequently ride in on a horse of high-sounding moral principles. Sometimes even the best leaders can convince themselves that their support for a mean-spirited proposal is based on something other than bigotry and prejudice or animus. Religious leaders who sold Amendment 2 as “biblically based” public policy need to rethink whether that washes in America. In this nation — the most religiously diverse on Earth — the laws must reflect the fact that we live in different religious traditions, with different interpretations of the Bible, and, indeed, different bibles. One day, we will look back on the idea that government could have the power to dictate whom adults can marry with as much bewilderment and embarrassment as we now, shamefully, wonder how we allowed government the power to ban interracial marriage. The U.S. Supreme Court ended the legal basis for that prejudice in the landmark 1967 ACLU case of Loving v. Virginia. Howard L. Simon of Miami is executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida.

Marriage Equality

jerk, or simply the regurgitation of what a bigoted pastor or ignorant parent has told them. In the case of California it was the product of a truly wicked program of misinformation and fear mongering bankrolled by the Mormon Church; sooner or later that organization is going to have to answer for its very public stand against equality. It has set itself against the flow of history and justice, and that is always a path to disaster and historical isolation. Democracy works best when it is ordered toward a common goal – such as electing a leader who is required to

As no major political figure had the guts to stand up and say why the voters of California needed to reject prejudice, the campaign was always fighting with a disadvantage; in reality the popular vote is not the way to go with this campaign. This is a matter of America gradually finding out what the consequences are of having equality enshrined in its constitution. It took until the 1950’s and 60’s to discover that equality applied to people of color. It seems it is taking till the first decades of the 21st century to discover that we too are fully human, and our equality should not depend upon the whims of any set of voters – it has already been set in the foundations of The United States of America. It is about time we as a people were ready to claim what is rightfully ours. We should not beg or plead, just quietly and firmly demand what is already ours by right.

ering its subject matter (the assignations of several U.S. presidents and skin deep explorations into the character of the assassins) especially at a time when lots of skinheads, etc. are thinking of killing the first African American president elect, Barack Obama. I thought it was a well done production with great scenery (Eli Grove & Kyle Herbert) and thoughtful direction (A. J. Allegra), however I did attend a party during its run which was also attended by Stephen Sondheim. As an acquaintance of mine from my decade of the 60s in NYC, I asked him if he might want to attend a performance. “Assassins!”, he said with surprise. “Why would anyone want to do that show? It’s never made any money and it’s not a popular work,” he said laughing. I dropped the subject and moved on to other topics. All things considered, I enjoyed seeing this peculiar work of Mr. Sondheim and especially appreciated the work of Vatican Lokey who simply changed costumes from his recent excellent work as the slimy pimp/whore monger in Butch Caire’s splendid production of Miss Saigon at Rivertown Rep. Theater. Gary Rucker as the Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald was a bit flat on his songs, but otherwise gave an energetic interpretation of Mr. Oswald. One old wag seated behind me was heard to say, “Looks like type casting to me!” I didn’t ask him if he meant the whole cast or just Mr. Rucker, Leader of the Hector J. Trau Hate Mongering Thesis published in that grocery list of girlish gossip Stageclick.com, which I found sadly childish, cruel and vindictive. But then he does admit to some mental handicap in his family genes, so I guess we must forgive and forget. Jimmy Murphy was really excellent as John W. Booth and Lauren Elens as Lynette Squeaky Fromme with Lisa Picone as Sara Jane Moore gave outstanding performances. Richard Alexander Pomes was also a standout as Sam Byck. Local theater legend Ricky Graham did a fun job of channeling Ricky Graham as the nutty character of Charles Guiteau and he looks very handsome with a full beard. The production values were high and the rest of the cast were all up to par. Other than the fact that this young talented theatrical company whined like spoiled babies over a couple of unhappy reviews, I would say most of the folk who saw this show were either impressed, frightened, or mesmerized. Of course as Melba Carondelet always said, “Like trained dogs, actors must be constantly praised and petted by mature adults or they go rabid.” Like Gary

Rucker and his 44 “jump on the hate wagon thesis” dingo dogs who followed his lead to crucify and joyfully take park in defamation of character. But as Tulane University’s one-time Chairperson of The Dept of Theater & Dance Barbara Hayley once told me, “Well, they all have such fragile egos.” She forgot to mention vicious, vindictive and insecure. And so to all of this, Much Ado About Nothing.

Onepiece

R

andy Bibb’s original musical (Onepiece) inspired by the musicals of that cinematic fishwoman, Ester Williams, opened recently at the Marigny Theater to a wildly appreciative audience. The work is a campy musical directed with an abundance of gay sensitivity by Glenn Meche, with impressive Musical Direction by Jim Walpole and bouncy choreography by El Tahra Ibrahim. Bitch lines abound and the performers seem to enjoy the verbal swordplay as each player gets a chance to prick a bit of blood from the ballooned egos of the characters. Mr. Bibb is to be praised for his lovely music and sharp witted book. Author Bibb was fortunate in having an all star cast of mostly recognized local talents to help bring his rib-tickling creation into existence. Playing Hester Willings was Wendy Michaels, a girl in a one-piece who looks good, sings well, and knows how to sell it all. Chris Wecklein was Bobby Biscayne, her philandering manager who really only wants to marry her as he tries to enchant her by singing a couple of lovely love songs with his beautiful voice. Wecklein, as only to be expected, was excellent in his role. A big big local favorite, Cammie West, played the Louellen Parsnips role and she, of course, totally stole a couple of scenes, singing and dancing like the really talented big trouper she is and who never disappoints her many fans. Rebecca Fox played the young young young small town girl, Deanna Garland, who just happens to swim like a porpoise and who can also sing like an operatic diva. She just may end up replacing Hester Willings, willingly. Joshua Peterson, willingly or otherwise, was the quintessential “over the top” actor trying to play a butch role, which he did with just a touch of the “nell brush.” Playing Miss Deanna Garland’s mentally deranged mother, Mrs. Garland, was the incomparable Tony Fennelly, locally known as the Dame Judi Denche of local thespians. She is absolutely stunning as the unhinged mama in a nursing home and had the audience falling out of their seats with laughter. T. J. Toups did a quietly effective job as Mayor Dwight McDweeb and Mr. Davis. Nice fortyish costumes were done by Regina Adams with that guy of many guises, Eric Webb as Stage Manager. This charming show can only get better

and if you like camp with an occasional stilleto (both heels and verbal weapons) you deserve to treat you self and attend this laugh-filled delightful original musical. This is the type of show one might expect to eventually see at Le Chat Noir. It’s made for just such a venue.

Seafarer

T

he Seafarer, the title of which comes from an ancient poem that deals with loneliness, death, paganism and Christianity written by acclaimed Irish playwright Conor McPherson, is currently on the boards of Souther Rep. Theater. Being Irish myself, I’m not too fond of plays set in Ireland and which concerns a group of men getting drunk on Christmas Eve, if not every day of their lives, having perhaps lived through too many family plots of the same type. However, this play was directed with a detailed and splendid approach by Mark Routhier whose directorial talents lifted it above the banality of drunken Irishmen talking, talking, talking and getting drunk. The author plants seeds of a plot that eventually chills and makes this bachnallian night into a surreal meeting with the supernatural and director, with great subtlety allows the horror to grow. Five excellent actors perform their roles on a somewhat shoddy set of dusty sofas, arm chairs, a coal heater and that ghastly picture of Christ which we who are Roman Catholic) remember from our childhood. It used to terrify me as I looked at Jesus pointing to his bleeding heart circled by a crown of thorns. Hung nearly upstage center above the downstairs exit, this Christ picture has a red votive candle below it which seems to glow red only when hit - an electric short perhaps, or maybe something else. I mention these items because they are essential symbolic elements of the very fine evocative set which also had an upstairs entrance area. Scenic design is by James K. [continued on Main-23]

So these five Irishmen, all drinkers, are finally settled to play an innocent game of cards on Christmas eve as they guzzle the booze. One of them is a stranger brought in by one of the regulars, his name being Mr. Lockhart and played with a eyrie control and subtlety of acting technique by James Fitzmorris. The others readily accept him into their marathon of card playing as the plot slowly proceeds. It seems that Mr. Lockhart, a complete stranger to all, knows certain terrible secrets of the assembled players. Hmmmmmmm. Drew Battles as James Sharky Harkin, the man Lockhart seems to know too much about, is brilliantly played by Drew Battles with a controlled technique that is very convincing. His drunken and blind father, Richard Harkin is play a bit over the top but very effectively by Mark McLaughlin. Ivan Curry is played with bumbling charm and very believable ability by John Bostic. Nicky Giblin is done by Shad Willingham with professional aplomb and high energy. The card game progresses and we learn during a scene when they are along together that Mr. Lockhart wants to bet something very sacred with Sharkey, the son of Richard Harkin. Will he get to play for this prize and if so will Sharkey lose “that special prize” forever to the mysterious stranger, Mr. Lockheart, whose name suggests another symbolism. perhaps Go see this wonderful and highly professional production and find out. It’s a great example of what fine acting and a good script are all about. And beware of well dressed suave strangers you might bring home on a cold winter’s’ Christmas eve.

allons acadiana by Patrick Clinton Email: BlondAtULL@aol.com

T

he countdown is on until the Bush Era is over once and for all. Hopefully, the next four years will see some progress towards gay equality. We can always dream of an America where all people will actually have the same rights. In the more near future, we can always look forward to the upcoming holiday season. In just over a week, it’ll be Thanksgiving, and soon afterward will be Christmas and New Year, quickly followed by the Carnival Season. For the next few months there will be nonstop celebrations throughout Acadiana, and I know you don’t want to miss any of it. In the meantime, don’t forget about Sound Factory and Back Side’s incredible weekly line-up. Even if its not a holiday, they always have something great going on. They are open seven days a week and always the place to be

Downtown. Every Monday you can compete in the weekly Pool Tournament at Back Side. If you’re good with a stick, come by and show off your talent. Whether you win or lose, it’s always a great time. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by Chad Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. His charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. So if you haven’t been out lately on a Tuesday night or you think Karaoke Night is just the same old thing, you definitely need to come by. Whether you enjoy being on stage or simply watching those that do, you’re sure to have an awesome night; Chad will make sure of that. Back by popular demand, Wednes-

day nights is Lube Wrestling, and while it may yet to be an Olympic sport, it is definitely one of the sexiest events of the week. And of course, you’re always welcome to participate. If you can wrestle, or just like to get all lubed up, come by early and sign up. If you win, there’s always fabulous prizes. Thursday is Lady’ s Night at Sound Factory, but if you’re a guy, don’t worry, the Back Side will always have some specials for you too. Friday Nights are the ever popular Dance Party where you can get out on the floor and go wild to some of the best music around. Then on Saturday you can be entertained by their ever popular Show Night. Each week there’ll be special entertainment to liven up the Lafayette

Nightlife. And who could forget Sundays with its twelve hours of fun and festivities? It begins at noon on Back Side with their Sunday Lunch Buffet and continues that night with the infamous Drag Races at Sound Factory. By midnight you’re ready for a good nights sleep since it all starts over again the next day. All in all, Sound Factory and Back Side make sure that no matter what night of the week you hit the Downtown, there’s always something festive going on. With so much on the calendar over the next few months, there’s a lot to look forward to in Downtown Lafayette. Just make sure you always designate a driver. Until next time, have fun and be safe. I’ll see you around the Downtown.

mobile, city by the bay ...from Expose-4 sible nominations and a breif description as to why this person should be considered! The annual AQUA Silent Auction, to benefit South Alabama CARES in conjunction with the Mobile Alabama Pride Wreath Auction will be held on Sunday, Nov. 23 at Gabriel’s. The combined auctions will be the perfect place to get a new wreath for your door or over the mantel as well as do some of your Christmas shopping and support two great organizations at the same time. The purpose of this e-mail is to ask that you look in your closets and under the bed and see what items you may have and wish to donate to the auction. Maybe that gift you received which you could not really use or that item you purchased and it did not work the way you thought and you never returned it. AQUA will be doing the mystery boxes again this year and certificates for meals and other smaller items make great items for the boxes. If you own a business or have contact with someone who does a donation of an item would be a great way to advertise the business. We are also beginning to collect items CARES Holiday Gift Box Project. The Holiday Gift Box Projects brings a little Christmas joy to those living with

HIV/AIDS and their families. We are in need of non-perishable food items, personal hygiene, cleaning and paper products. We are also looking for fun items, such as movie passes, candy and toys. This year CARES has it’s first infant client in a number of years. His mother passed away and is being cared for my his grandmother. Some of the items needed are: Boys clothing, sizes 9 & 12 months (He has clothes for his size now); Similac milk #3 & #4, diapers, Baby Wipes Infant Blankets Toys Keep in mind, babies grow quickly and this baby will need help for years to come. Any items which will not perish and he can used later will be appreciated. You can drop off any donations at Bacchus, B-Bob’s, Gabriel’s and Vision’s. Keep the auction in mind as you plan your holiday shopping. We will be sending out a reminder with more details as the time grows closer. The Pride of the Southeast Conference (POSE) is March 20-22, 2009. The Pride Parade and Pride Festival in the Park is set for April 17 - 19th 2009. Hope To Hear From You Soon... --Pride Board 2008/2009 This message was sent by: Mobile Alabama Pride, Inc, PO Box 227, Mobile, AL 36601.

Naked Truth

S

ome of you have asked me how I come up with subject dividers for my articles. I try to follow a theme, and somehow it just comes to me, sometimes at the last minute. I don’t sit around thinking of what to say, but I do like to analyze and give individuals a little positive input about their lives. Today, I’d like to talk about a great friend, a bosom buddy, a confidant extraordinaire, an outstanding human being. His name is Danny Fontenot, and here is the naked truth about him. I first met Danny many years ago when Hibiscus Bookstore was just a little hole in the wall down on Main Street. He came in one day while I was there, and we started talking and haven’t shut up since that day. If we aren’t talking in public, we are taking advantage of the Internet by e-mailing back and forth, sometimes several times a day or talking on the phone. Danny works at LSU, and he loves the Tigers, the games, and everything about campus work. He even lives near the campus in a gorgeous and extravagantly landscaped home off Highland Road. With the help of his significant other, he has finally found a happiness he really hadn’t known before. Danny is one of those very sincere and dedicated human beings. If he is your friend, then you have a great one. He doesn’t change. He is always the same – loyal, kind, and caring. I think his personality must be a combination of his Germanic and Cajun backgrounds. Whatever the combination, I wouldn’t trade the camaraderie for anything. I am so happy that Dwayne came into his life. They make great music together, and they are committed to a relationship of honor which is independent of outside sources. In fact, if there was ever a monogamous relationship, they have it. As a member of the Baton Rouge Krewe of Apollo, Danny has been one of their hardest workers over the years, and his support has always been outstanding. He is a former king of this krewe, and his high standards of support for other members goes above and beyond the call of duty. In fact, it was Danny who interested me in joining the krewe, and later it was another dear friend Tom who invited me to my first Mardi Gras ball. I joined shortly thereafter. I was with Danny only yesterday as we worked in a hibiscus garden on LSU’s property on Essen Lane. Like all other endeavors, he was there to sup-

holiday and can’t wait for the next one. Southern Decadence has in recent years become a type of gay Mardi Gras with festive natives and visitors enjoying this wonderful holiday even more than Mardi Gras. I guess I should let the people in Oz know what they are missing. We may not have a World Nude Day in Louisiana, but with Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence, who needs one? Besides, that makes two for us. Well, come to think of it, a day or so like this naked event would be nice and revealing. Hmmm.

Naked Perusals

I

Fabulous Danny Fontenot

port the club of which he is a member, and he put in an afternoon of hard work like he always does for Apollo or other groups he is connected to. That makes him just about one of the most dependable guys I know. I appreciate his intense interest in helping out, and I try to let him know that he is loved as a friend and confidant. Sometimes I wonder if he even knows what a terrific human being he is. He came into my life, and I’m not letting him go. You just simply won’t find another human being like him. The mold was broken the moment he came into this world, and the world is better off for his entrance. I know I am. I cherish this guy, and I love him dearly.

World Nude Day

I

t is believed to have started as a joke, but it appears to have caught on – at least in Australia. Clips of the event are shown on TV (uncensored) and in newspaper articles (with strategically placed items covered, of course). It’s called World Nude Day, and it will take place on February 6, 2009. That probably wouldn’t work too well here, especially in Red Stick. As you may know, February is summertime down under, so running around naked would be pleasant there – and not so here. In the land of Oz, this holiday is like Christmas, and it is celebrated with great gusto. In our part of the world, we have Mardi Gras to revel in. It’s always nice when it is rather warm because it is then that the clothes come down to the bare essentials, and body parts are hanging out all over the place. Those who experience this Louisiana holiday are amazed at what they see – and feel. Once in attendance, people are hooked on this

like to peruse. Don’t you? It’s a technique you use when checking out a book, a newspaper, or even buying needed items. It is a way to check out things. I peruse constantly, and I have a feeling most of you do too. Take Luther, for instance. Every guy coming into George’s is guilty of extensive perusing. They are going up and down that body the entire time they are there. That’s what happens when you are such a gorgeous human being. I love to peruse him over dinner, and I know Gerry does. In fact, Gerry plays touch me, touch me constantly. That’s not for me. I’d rather do that in the privacy of my own home - or his. Goodness! I do look forward to our nights out. Perusals reach new heights every time I’m in his company. Luther is absolutely the best eye candy around – well, not completely, but he’s good for starters. Going to Splash is a treat, and perusal material is abundantly plentiful here. Take Lance, for instance. Like Luther, he is simply gorgeous, and there has never been a Mr. Butt Beautiful winner with such an outstanding asset as this young man. Those tight jeans and bountiful package just about sends me into orbit each time I see him. Now this is one guy that I could never tire of perusing. He simply gets better and better as the days go by. He has the charm, the wit, and the intelligence to place him far above so many others. I rather like those traits in a man. Another of my perusal favorites is the sexiest lawyer on the face of the planet, one Joseph of the house of Possa. He has both style and intelligence that put him into a category that few can reach. On top of this, he has to be one of the most beautiful guys in the world. I happen to know that with this one, the beauty goes beyond the outward appearance. He has an inner beauty that defies description. I like to think of this as a heart of goal. He is an honorable friend, and I’m glad to claim him as a friend. I can assure you that when it comes to perusing, I’ve taken it all in - all of it. My goodness! He is just absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous. My Colla boy is another of those ideal human beings. Besides his charm and his wit, he is definitely perusal material. I don’t see him as much as I used to, but I don’t get over to his part

of the state that much. And I never know where he is since his job carries him all over the place. I do know that he is a wonderful guy, with a lust for life and a way to fulfill his dreams. Along the way, he has crossed many paths, some good, some bad, but he always comes out on top. That is what being an outstanding human being is all about. He is another one of those where the mold was broken, and he stands tall in everything he does. I love perusing this one. I used to peruse Little John, but I leave that now to Mighty Phil. There comes a time when you have to give up some things, and what is left is only an occasional perusal. That’s fine. When someone comes forth with a great companion, that makes for a wonderful partnership. These two guys are so deserving of each other. It was a match made on earth but worthy of heaven. However, I now can peruse in double time, or in duplicate, or something like that. Mark has done a lot of perusing in his time too. However, he doesn’t have to do that anymore. Like Phil, his John has filled a void in his life and made him a better man. In fact, this is another combo ideal for perusing. Naked or clothed, these two are fantastically gorgeous. It’s a good example of what a nice southern boy always wished for – and got. In this case, it a Yankee stud with a body to die for. Oh, my goodness! My tongue is in high gear, and I’m drooling. What a beautiful couple they make! The last time I saw Blake was at the IML meeting in Chicago back in 2003, but that delightful image remains with me. He and Rod met me while I was there the year Hibiscus Bookstore sponsored Mark for the international title, and I tagged along. It was a reunion I hadn’t expected, and I still think about it. They were neighbors and friends, and they left the warmth of the south for the cold north country. You sometimes have to do what you think is best for your future, and that’s what both of these guys did. Blake came up with the love of his life, and Rod ended up with his dream job. It is always nice to see things work out so well, and these two are definitely deserving ones. I do miss them. I know Ty and Stephen think I have overlooked them, but I could never do that. When it comes to perusing, they are certainly worthy of consideration. I think they have the charisma that makes them stand out above so many others. That is easy to surmise when you consider their great personalities. I still consider Ty to be a quiet one, but I’m told that when he relaxes and gets to know you, he really comes out from that silent appearance and into a situation that he manages to control expertly and wisely. Stephen reached that plateau with me the first time I met him. He was one of those guys that just commanded [continued on Expose-19]

hot tails of red stick ...from Expose-16 my attention. I love a man who knows how to command. I doubt if he even knew he did that. As for the two of them, I could easily place them at the top of my perusal list. They are a magnificent couple. I could go on and on but space limitation means I have to stop. However, the next time you see any of these guys out, let me know what you think. I know you are going to peruse them. You’ve done it before, and you will do it again and again. And you know what? They know you are doing it. And they love to do the same. However you look at it, perusing works both ways, so go out and have a perusing good time. And it isn’t strictly a guy thing either. Females do it too. Just ask Coco. See? I told you so.

Whole Naked Truth

T

hanksgiving is that time of the year when we pay thanks for having another year of eventful and mostly rewarding experiences. It started long ago, but the holiday continues, and we share the bounty of our foods with friends and loved ones. The turkeys are stripped of their feathers, stuffed expertly, and cooked to perfection. It is a blessed time, and we can be thankful for all our accomplishments and our lives of fulfillment and promise. At least, we are supposed to feel this way. Wherever you are, my message to you is one we should think about at all times of the year. Go forth and spread good will. It will come back to you many times over. Have a great holiday - and enjoy the day with pride for the good (and naked) things in life.

The Sky is Gray: Visual Works Inspired by the Writings of Ernest Gaines

his innovative art exhibition features original artworks in diverse media by artists across the country and internationally including New York, California, and Paris, France. The exhibition, which was curated by Leslie Charleville, has been installed in the spacious Alfred C. Glassell Jr. Exhibition Gallery in the Shaw Center for the Arts, 100 Lafayette Street, in Baton Rouge through December 10. Participating artists include: Leslie Charleville, Michael Crespo, Addie Dawson-Euba, Demond, Malaika Favorite, Jacques P. Gasquet, Melody Guichet, June B. Gumbel, Robert Hausey, Randell Henry, Patricia Hough, Christopher K. Johns, Libby Johnson, Charlotte Ka, Kelli Scott Kelley, Salonga Lee, Marcus McAllister, AJ Meek, Darlene Moore, Thomas Neff, Joseph Pearson, Morris Thomas, and Lewis Watts. Artists were asked to create new works of art inspired by their personal reading of Ernest Gaines’ writings. Their visual responses to his literature will be featured along with the passages that inspired them. This exhibition is made possible through the support of Mr. Robert Galantucci, the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, Mockler Beverage, Budweiser, and Teach for America – South Louisiana. MFA Thesis Exhibition: EXHIBITION NEXT: Looking into the Future of Exhibition Design Santanu Majumdar December 8-12, 2008 Reception: Monday, December 8 2pm *Exhibition will be located in the LSU Museum of Art – Shaw Center Artist Statement: “At the very least,” Peter Lunenfeld writes, “design research saves us from reinventing the wheel. At its best, a lively research methodology can reinvigorate the passion that so often fades after designers join the profession.” Peter Lunenfeld inspires me to work on the evolution

within exhibition design. My thesis project is about the future of exhibition design, which will allow me to find out the requirements with the growing demand of time and economy. After attending a lecture in “Processing” (the building of interactive software through programming) in the beginning of Fall 2007, I was fascinated and excited by the introduction of new technology. As a result, I felt the need to find out how exhibition designers are going to prepare themselves for the demand in cutting age technology. It seems with the advancements in digital technology, present-day exhibitions (multi-disciplinary) will transform to fewer disciplines. For instance, today’s exhibition requires product design, structural design, textile design, graphic design, light and sound and so on. In the near future, digital technology will leave very little scope for so many other disciplines. Exhibition design is not going to fade out in the future, even with the fast growth of digital communication. Although there has been some interest in “virtual” exhibitions, these are unlikely to develop to any great extent as they lack the key advantages of the live arena, namely face-to-face contact and the ability to demonstrate products and services live. Exhibition Next is going to be a communication tool with which the viewer will carry back information of interest in the form of e-mail. This tool cuts down carrying brochure and DVDs, which eventually land up in the trashcan. This particular system will allow the exhibit to keep a track of data without filling up a physical/electronic form. The system will be possible through RFID technology. The installation of Exhibition Next at LSU Museum of Art, Shaw Center for the Arts is going to demonstrate the possibilities in future of exhibition. It opens on Monday, December 8 at 2pm and the exhibition runs till December 12. A Time For Adjustment: Part Seven

D

ale listened intently as Kevin and Kenny relived their past. He heard all about the first time they had swum out to the island off Crandon Park, after an afternoon of volleyball. He listened as they related their first sexual encounter, he could hear the excitement and lust in their voices even now after all these years and he began to wonder if years from now he and Kevin would feel the same way. They spoke of the things they had done as if they had taken place just a day or two ago, and when they got into the actual details about their sessions, he felt himself being drawn into them as if he were there participating with them. He not only heard how they felt kissing each other deeply, he could feel their tongues swirling around with his, and as Kenny described going down on Kevin, he could almost feel the warmth of his mouth. So much so in fact he felt himself rising to the occasion, until there he sat between the two older men with the towel making a sizeable tent in his lap. He looked towards Kevin and looked down at himself, so the other man would know the effect the conversation was having on him. Kevin winked at him and smiled as if to say there was nothing wrong with what he was feeling. He leaned over and kissed Dale deeply, Kenny straightened up in his chair moving slightly to ease the erection pressing against the fabric of his jeans. He wanted more than anything else to be the one Kevin was kissing now, he wanted it so bad, that he could literally taste it. He could almost taste the juicy fruit that Kevin was always chewing as a kid. Dale returned Kevin’s kiss leaning back in the chair. He leaned just a bit too far and slid off onto Kenny’s lap, his shoulder resting in his crotch. Christ, he thought to himself, he thought Kevin was exaggerating the size of Kenny’s penis, now he knew neither one of them was stretching the truth. He pulled himself up with Kevin’s help and disconnect the kiss. “Sorry about that man, I slipped,” was all he could think of saying. “No apology necessary, it was the best thing I’ve had between my legs in a long time.” “I wouldn’t exactly say that, you’re really packing.” Kenny laughed, “You thought I was kidding? I told you it was the biggest I’ve ever had and remember I was virgin when he plunged that monster into me the first time. I didn’t think I was ever going to walk again, and I was sure

when I got back to shore my mom would say something or another about the way I was walking.” “Did she?” “I told her I had pulled a muscle playing volleyball.” He laughed again. “So what do you think of it?” “Pretty impressive is what I think.” “Go ahead and take it in your hand, I’m not going to get jealous.” “Do you mind?” Dale asked. “If Kevin doesn’t I sure won’t.” Dale slowly reached over and took hold of Kenny through his pants. Kenny reached down and unbuttoned his fly releasing all of him. Holding it in his hand gently as if it might break Dale just stared at it with admiration. “Why in the hell did you two break up anyway?” “We had run our course that’s all.” “Actually, I was stupid.” Kenny stopped Kevin, “I thought that I had found someone better, when in fact I had not. I ran away with him, it lasted for a month maybe two, I can’t remember any more. I realized what I had given up, but I couldn’t return, I was too ashamed of myself for being so stupid and ever since I’ve regretted it. I’ve got to admit to the both of you that if I could erase all the time that has past us by I would.” Dale took his hand off Kenny and a worried look came over his face. “Is that why you came looking for Kevin?” “No, don’t get me wrong, I didn’t come looking for Kevin, it was just fate that allowed our paths to cross here in New Orleans. I actually came looking for you.” Dale’s heart sunk and he turned ashen. “Looking for me? Then I was right, my fears were realized, my father sent you? What are you a private dick?” Kenny smiled and looked down at his exposed privates. “I wouldn’t exactly call myself private at this moment.” Dale didn’t respond to this halfhearted joke. “So what happens now, you call my dad and tell him you’ve succeeded in tracking me down? You know you can’t force me to go back home I am an adult in the eyes of the law and have the right to live where ever I choose. I know my dad is a powerful man and could indeed cause a lot of grief for us… He stopped dead in what he was saying… I mean me of course. I don’t want to go back there I love my family, I really do, but I can’t live a lie, and I can’t expose them especially my father to the shame it would cause him letting his followers know that I am gay man. I don’t want to have to live a secret life, a prisoner in my father’s house. Being watched every second I step out, every where I go. I can’t be seen with

any of my gay cohorts, let alone have a relationship with one of them.’ “So you ran away from it? Has it truly anything at all?’ “I was just about to think it had. When I met, finally found Kevin that is. At last I was beginning to feel good about my new identity, at last I had found someone to put my trust in, someone whom I could finally love. But now you’re here and it looks like it is coming to an end.” “It doesn’t have to,” “You mean you won’t report back to my father that you’ve found me.” “I didn’t say that.” Kenny took Dale’s hand into his. “I could do that I suppose, but the fact is I’m not the only one that’s out looking for you, the company I work for has many other agents. Truth is if I found you it won’t be long before others do. Do you want to spend the rest of your life running from who and what you are? I guess what I am trying to say here simply put is do you want to throw your chance with Kevin away like I did?” “No, I really don’t. What I really want is to stay with him as long as he wants me to,” Kevin took hold of his free hand. “That day may never come, when I’d want you to leave, you understand that?” “I hope it doesn’t.” Dale leaned over and kissed Kevin on the cheek. “So who am I in love with? What is your name really? If you aren’t Dale Evans who are you?” “Daniel. Does it really matter?” “Not at all, after all I didn’t fall in love with a name; I fell in love with the person. A real live gem of a guy I might add. If you don’t want to tell me your name it doesn’t matter to me at all, in fact you can use mine if you would like.” “Is that a proposal by any chance,” Daniel smiled. “Sounded like one to me.” Kenny smiled at the two of them. The one man he had really loved growing up and the guy he loved now. “There is still the matter of my dad.” “Stop running from it, it really shouldn’t matter to anyone. Besides if he can’t deal with it, let it be his problem, it certainly should not be yours. Listen to me; he’ll just have to accept who and what you are, nothing more, nothing less. Set yourself free Daniel, not as Dale but as yourself.” “Perhaps you’re right.” “I know I am. Let yourself be free. Accept yourself for what you are, you’ll be happier. Don’t toss away what life has given you.” “Listen to him Daniel,” Kevin stood up and walked behind Daniel pulling him to his feet. He hugged the younger man pulling him close to his body. “Let go of what you are. Stop hiding, you don’t have to.” “You don’t hate me because of what I’ve done to you?” “You mean loving me?” “No, I mean lying to you.” Kevin laughed; Daniel gave him a curious look. “To tell you the truth, I

haven’t been exactly on the level with you myself. If we are clearing the air here I have some truths about myself that you should know as well. “Look, you both have a lot to talk about, I should be going.” Kenny interjected. “Not so fast, before you leave us we have to exchange address, phone numbers and such. I don’t want to lose you a second time.’ Daniel turned to face Kevin. “Would you like me to clear out for a little while so you can say your good-byes privately?” “That won’t be necessary.’ Kevin reached to Kenny and Kenny moved into his arms. They kissed once again and then another time, then separated. “I’ll leave my card on the counter.” Kenny said walking out the door. “Tell my dad I love him." Daniel called out. “I’ll be sure to do that right after I quit my job. To quote a rather fond TV character, “Live long and prosper my friends.” They all three laughed at that. Daniel and Kevin watched as Kenny walked out of the courtyard and onto the street.
