IGLTA Becomes First Gay Organization in World Tourism Organization

T

he International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association was one of 14 Affiliate Members approved for admission in the World Tourism Organization in October, a first for an LGBT organization. The decision was made during the 89th session of the UNWTO executive council. Twenty-six of the 31 states comprising the executive council were in attendance, a diverse group that includes Brazil, France, Egypt, India, Iran, South Africa, and the Russian Federation. UNWTO is a specialized agency of the United Nations and the leading international organization in the field of tourism, serving as a global forum for policy issues and a practical tourism resource. IGLTA is the leading global organization dedicated to connecting businesses in the LGBT tourism industry. “Partnering with such a world-renowned organization positions IGLTA and its membership at the forefront of global tourism,” IGLTA President/CEO John Tanzella said. “It’s a testament to the progress of our association and its incredible members that IGLTA now has impact far beyond the LGBT travel niche. We are extremely pleased.” UNWTO plays a central role in promoting the development of responsible and universally accessible tourism. The organization unites 161 member states and territories and more than 400 Affiliate Members from the private sector. Among the new members joining alongside IGLTA were the University of Bologna (Italy), Promitur (Cape Verde) and Dar Al-Diafa for Hospitality and Tourism Education Consultancy (Jordan). “We are delighted that IGLTA has joined forces with UNWTO. We are certain that the relationship will be mutually beneficial as we exchange information on trends in world tourism and IGLTA helps to orientate UNWTO Affiliate Members in the world of LGBT travel,” said UNWTO Director of Affiliate Members, Javier Blanco. “Our two organizations share the values of sustainable, competitive travel and respect for UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism and this provides an ideal framework for future collaboration.” Founded with 25 members in 1983, IGLTA has now grown to include more than 2,200 member businesses in 84 countries. Membership consists of accommodations, airlines, tour operators, travel agents, destinations, media and other key players in global tourism. Servicemembers United Calls on White House to Publicly Declare NDAA/ DADT as Top Lame Duck Priority

S

ervicemembers United, the nation’s largest organization of gay and lesbian troops and veterans, called on the Obama administration to publicly and consistently declare that the defense authorization bill, complete with the DADT repeal provision, is an administration priority for the post-election legislative session of Congress. “President Obama and his spokesman have had several opportunities to publicly declare the administration’s set of priorities for the lame duck session of Congress. Unfortunately, completing the defense authorization bill has not been included among those priorities,” said Alexander Nicholson, Executive Director of Servicemembers United. “These omissions stand in stark contrast to what the President and his staff are saying elsewhere. Mr. President, either your administration is with us or its against us, and a mediocre level of public advocacy from your White House is not standing with us.” Congress reconvened for the postelection legislative session the week of November 15th, and Servicemembers United has led a public education campaign around the nuanced requirements for getting the National Defense Authorization Act passed during this session. As previously noted, the key to accomplishing this goal will be 1) getting Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to bring the bill back up under reasonable procedural conditions before the Senate’s Thanksgiving recess and 2) getting the White House to be publicly and heavily involved in efforts to see this happen during that period.

Movie Review: Inside Job

S

ony Pictures’ Inside Job is one of those documentaries, that after viewing, leaves you dumbstruck with a mixture of emotions ranging from anger to utter disbelief. This is one film that should be mandatory viewing in every school. Academy Award nominated filmmaker Charles Ferguson brings us the first film that exposes the shocking truth behind the economic crises of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over 20 trillion dollars, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and their lives and this movie tells you how it happened. Inside Job was an official selection of the 2010 Cannes, Toronto International, Telluride and New York Film Festivals. As producer, writer and director of Inside Job, Ferguson has done a brilliant job of exposing a rogue industry that has corrosive relationships which has corrupted politics, academia and regulation. I was fully enthralled by Ferguson’s film, as he takes you carefully and with methodical precision on how the crises started, it’s causes and the global effect it has had on the world. Through extensive research and interviews with financial insiders, politicians, and journalists, all the key elements are displayed beautifully giving an accurate timeline of the crises and a thorough identification of all the key players. No stone is left unturned in this searing account of the cause of the economic crises. From politicians, billionaires and global leaders to a psychotherapist and a notorious madam, Ferguson produces a wide range of experts and players in the financial industry. The film is narrated by Academy Award winner Matt Damon. Charles Ferguson, the founder of Representational Pictures, is a filmmaker, writer and political scientist. His first film, No End In Sight: The American Occupation in Iraq, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 wining their Special Jury Prize. It also was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary. I cannot urge people enough to see this film, it is an important wake up call for Americans. It’s insightful view into the financial industry and its corruption. LGBT activist and political leader Barney Frank is also interviewed. He is chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, which oversees the entire financial services industry including the securities, insurance, banking, and housing industries. This is definitely a large box of popcorn

Movie Review: Tamara Drewe

T

his month has been exceptionally crazy so unfortunately I have not had a chance to finish reading any novels, but I was able to fit another movie into my schedule. So lets talk about Tamara Drewe, a Sony Classics release by Stephen Frears and based on the graphic novel by Posy Simmonds. The story takes place in the English countryside, right outside the quaint village of Ewedown. Famous crime novelist Nicholas Hardiment, played pompously by the wonderful actor Roger Allam, runs Stonefield Farms with his wife Beth. The farm has been turned into a writers’ retreat through the hard work of Beth and gardener and handyman Andy Cobb. Cobb is played by the deliciously handsome Luke Evans who played Apollo in the Clash of the Titans remake. Cobb‘s family fell upon hard times and sold their neighboring farm Winnards to the wealthy Drewe family as their summer estate. As teenagers, he was romantically involved with the Drewe’s daughter. Now, he and Beth slave tirelessly keeping Stonefield running while Nicholas churns out best sellers and has numerous affairs with younger women. Adding to the complications is American writer Glen portrayed by Bill Camp, who is at the retreat to help his severe case of writer’s block and who has fallen in love with Beth. Then like a comet, Tamara Drewe enters the scene. She has returned from London after her mother’s death to fix up the family home. She is now a celebrity columnist who chronicled her recent plastic surgery. She is barely recognized by the locals since this surgery and the refinement of her nose which was large and beaklike. Gemma Arterton, who was cast opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in The Prince of Persia, has taken the role and made it her own. Rounding out the cast of characters in this romance comedy is Tamara’s rock star boyfriend Ben (Dominic Cooper), a local barmaid who occasionally sleeps with Andy, and two schoolgirls with a penchant for trouble. What ensues is a mixed bag of romantic and sexual dalliances among the cast. Tamara Drewe is a fun film, but ultimately does not add anything new to the genre. If you want lighthearted escap-

ism, it succeeds on that level and the ending is very predictable. Among the other film’s shortcomings is the plotline slowed in some places, but in the end it is the cast that saves this picture from being just another British romantic comedy. I recommend seeing this picture with a medium size popcorn, Luke Evans and the smoldering Dominic Cooper as rock star Ben make it worth the price of admission.

Great Collectors/Great Donors: The Making of the New Orleans Museum of Art, 19102010 will run through January 23, 2011. The Odyssey Ball was just an incredible evening of wonderful cuisine provided by the Ralph Brennan restaurants, great dance music, incredible décor, a one of a kind auction and of course, world renowned art. As guests entered the entire length of trees along Diboll was lit up in pink lights as was the front façade of the building. Once inside, the entire Great Hall illuminated pink. With inspired and artistic floral arrangements and décor, the night was turned into a special evening honoring those who have made NOMA the cultural jewel it is today. The special exhibition has been organized to examine the pivotal role played by private collectors in not only the growth of the permanent collection, but in creating its essential character by supporting specific areas of world art. Needless to say, hundreds of people have generously donated artworks to the Museum over the years. Great Collectors/Great Donors: The Making of the New Orleans Museum of Art, 1910-2010 focuses on just twenty-seven of these individuals or couples who have played a transformative role in setting new directions for the future growth of the collection. During the past century, NOMA’s great

collectors, together with hundreds of other donors, have built a fabulous art collection for the citizens of New Orleans. The exhibit gratefully salutes these donors’ foresight and generosity. The museum is open five days a week, Wednesday, 12pm to 8pm and Thursday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Louisiana residents get in free on Wednesdays. For more information, go to www.noma.org or call 504.658.4100.

Sunday Successes

O

n Sunday, November 14, I was able to attend two wonderful events that were lots of fun and very winning fundraisers for all involved. The first was the Mystic Krewe of Satyricon’s Holiday Auction and show at the Old New Orleans Jazz Hall. If you were not there then you missed an incredible afternoon of amazing food, a fabulous silent auction of wreaths, holiday décor and gift baskets, hot men and a drag show that was beyond words. I was lucky enough to emcee this event with the Hostess with the Most Stephen Rizzo, who just looked absolutely divine in his afternoon outfit. Entertainers included Deja Déjà Vu (who also donated some beautiful holiday displays for the auction), Queen Amon-Ra Countess C. Alice, Queen Petronius Natasha, Queen Petronius-Elect Bootsie Deville, Princesse Stephaney and King Cake Queen Opal Masters all doing holiday numbers to get everyone in the spirit of the holidays. Richie Rich kept things lively as the DJ. For more information on Satyricon and its events go to mystickreweofsatyricon.com or call 504.671.7410. As Captain of Satyricon, I along with the entire krewe offer our heartfelt thanks to all the people and other krewes that came out in support of our fundraiser. This was probably our largest fundraiser yet and it is all because of your generosity. Another thank you goes out to Scott Graves who donated many ornaments to our event for the auction. The second event of the day was Craftin’ and Cocktails with the Countess, the second fundraiser to help Odyssey House’s Women and Children’s Program. It was held at JohnPaul’s and was another huge success for Countess C. Alice. Guests were able to decorate their own gingerbread men while they dined on fabulous food supplied by Odyssey House’s own catering department. There was another fabulous show with some very special ladies of New Orleans. For more information on Odyssey House and its programs, go to www.ohlinc.org.

Tami Tarmac, Coca, Maybelline Mascara,Princesse Stephaney were just a few on hand. Actually there was nothing hard about working on this film. It was an absolute pleasure being part of a scene and I thoroughly enjoyed the morning of filming. So keep an eye out for this movie coming to theatres soon. About twenty of us boarded a hay covered wagon filled with beer, graciously donated for the event by JohnPaul’s. We slowly toured the historic Marigny neighborhood to our first stop, Cutter’s, where co-owner Jimmy made an amazing spaghetti dish. After a few cocktails and a quick roll in the hay with one of the regulars, I was off once again. We circled the crowded Bywater Mirliton Festival on our way to the next destination which was the Friendly Bar, where Marty and Koo had some incredible treats in store for us. Along the way, the merry revelers aboard the wagon picked up people and shouted "Hay" to the passersby. Some people actually thought we were throwing beads instead of hay and tried catching it. When we arrived at our final location, JohnPaul’s, everyone was pretty liquored up and the entire event turned into a dance party. So the Marigny bars do this event twice annually, so keep an eye out for this event and jump on the bandwagon (or more like hay wagon). When the person opened the door shock had set in. “What am I doing here, what are you doing here,” Cathy Fox said as she stood in the doorway in a plush white bathrobe, high heels, and a cigarette in her hand. “You are not room service.” “No sister, we are not, move aside,” said Elizabeth as she pushed her way into the room and went straight to the mini bar. She opened it up selected a mini bottle of vodka, downed it then retrieved another one. “Look Bouvier, those drinks are not cheap.” “Can it lady, do not poor mouth me, if you have enough money to ride on Vespa’s little scooter, then you can shell out for a mini bar drink, if you know what I mean.” “Cathy, what are you doing here with Vespa, he could be the one blackmailing you?” “No, not Vespa, we are in love, it can’t be him. It has to be one of the others. Vic and I are going to be married, you just wait and see. He loves me for my talent and my essence.” “Well I see he left some of his essence on these sheets,” Elizabeth said. “I do not think there is enough detergent in the world to get rid of those stains. I think they may have to be burned.” She downed another mini bottle of vodka and grabbed a beer.

If you remember a few years ago, this play debuted at the wonderful Le Chat Noir. under the gaydar ...from 18 “Don’t be disgusting. What Vic and I have is a beautiful thing shared by two people in love.” “And, also four hundred dollars, that is the going rate of a man whore who makes house calls,” Elizabeth said. “How would you know?” I asked her. “I take my research very seriously as a detective, besides not all of us are as lucky as you to get freebies like you. By the way how is Colston.” “Lets not change the subject.” I said wanting to get the attention off of my dating one of Rhonda Roget‘s stud boys. “Cathy, you are paying this love of your life, I assume,” she directed the question at Cathy. “Yes, but he is struggling his way through school.” “School, the man is in his forties, what school is he going to?” I said laughing. “He is going to cosmetology school, he wants to open a shop for bikini waxing. He is an artist down there if you know what I mean. Just see for yourself.” And with that she opened her robe. “Oh my god,” I screamed and turned away. “Calm down gay boy,’ Elizabeth said. “Is that a profile of Abraham Lincoln. He is good, I wonder if he can do mine like a butterfly.” “I am sure that he could, he can do just about anything. One time I asked for a Bo Derek, you know with braids, so I let my hair grow down there and he….” “That’s enough,” I interrupted. “So, if it is not Vic, that leaves two more left because we eliminated Renegade Robbie.” “Try Easy Bake Oven Lance next. He was not pleased when I stopped using his services. He even went as far as to threaten me by calling me a whore.” “Now that is literally the pot calling the kettle black,” Elizabeth said. “You think maybe you could have told us about him earlier, so we could have started with him. Cathy, obviously your detective skills compare to your ability to keep an audience captivated for longer then a three minute song.” “Drunken bitch,’ she spat back. “Ladies, calm down, come on Elizabeth, lets get out of here and go find Easy Bake Oven Lance next. Cathy, we will let you know what we find.” We exited the room, my stomach a little queasy from the sight of Cathy’s nether regions manicured to look like the profile of the sixteenth president of the United States. As we walked in the parking garage, Elizabeth called her contact at Rhonda Roget’s House. Rhonda was the madam of all these boys and was even suspicious herself with the way she had gotten Cathy hooked on using her boys. If Cathy had four boys on a string, Rhonda must have been raking in the bucks. Elizabeth snapped shut her cell phone. “My contact at the house says, Easy Bake is on his way to a date with a regular client now. The place he was going to was just a few minutes from here, lets go.” I sighed and got into the passenger seat of Elizabeth’s car. She started the engine and I noticed something on the windshield. It was a large piece of paper lodged under the wiper. She retrieved it and showed it to me. In cut out letters from different magazines it said: Stop your snooping or die! “We must be getting close, the blackmailer is getting worried,” Elizabeth said as she backed her car out and we left the garage. “I know, maybe we should stop, I mean this could be dangerous,” I said making sure my seatbelt was securely fastened. “Look don’t sissy out on me now. We are detectives now and danger is part of our line of work, so get use to it and man up. Besides how bad can this guy be, he wants Cathy‘s crowns and sashes. Does that sound like a butch person to you.” We drove about ten minutes to a renovated fiber mill in the warehouse district. The place had been turned to very exclusive condos now. We found a spot on the street and went to the front door. We saw the building was securely locked down with tenants having to type in their code to enter. There was a security guard if you wanted to call her that, in the front lobby. Currently she was eating a snickers bar and watching the Home Shopping Network.

A woman was struggling with her grocery bags at the door. I ran to her aid smiling broadly, let me help you, I’m going to see my boyfriend on the fourth floor,” I said instinctively. “This is my older sister, Ellen, I pointed to Elizabeth.” The woman smiled back and allowed us to help her inside with her bags. While I was getting the woman’s purchases in a cart used by the residents, Elizabeth scanned the names on the mailboxes. While the tenant was occupied, Elizabeth whispered in my ear, “No Easy Bake Oven Lance, that must be an alias.” “Really, brilliant deduction,” I rolled my eyes. “There is a Lance Jones on the second floor.” “Lets give that a try.” We said goodbye to the lady with the bags and took the fire stairs to the second level. The security guard not once looked up from her television. “Room 202, here we are, I wonder why he is called Easy Bake Oven,” Elizabeth said as she knocked on the door. A nice looking young man answered dressed in a suit with a giant name tag saying judge on it. Before he cold speak, a voice called out from behind it. “Get rid of whoever it is I am ready for my crowning.”

“I know that voice, Elizabeth said and she rushed pass the guy and ran inside the apartment. There was no one in the spacious den but the door to the bedroom to the right was ajar and she burst in the room with me right at her heels. “You can’t just barge in here,” the young man said right behind me. Once inside the bedroom, we stared at the scene before us. It was I who spoke first. “What in the gay hell is happening here.” (Remember this story is make believe, like one big Fairy Tale.) Can I finally be an American?

I

am at this moment I’m feeling so many things. My soul is bubbling over with mixed emotions: anger, frustration, sorrow, melancholy, hope, hopelessness, and disappointment. It seems I get this way every time I turn on the TV, go on the internet, speak on the phone or use any other form of media. The world as I know it has for ever changed, possibly beyond measure. I am no longer the child who was thankful to be born in America, I know longer have that beautiful innocence I once had. Looking back I wish I had clasped it as closely as I used to clutch my teddy bear! These familiar lyrics deeply affected me as a child: “For purple mountain majesties, Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!” That place in the song was the most beautiful place my 10 years old mind could imagine, and I believed I had the privilege of being born there. I believed every word with my whole heart and any one who knew me as a child could testify to the fact that I sang so loudly during assemblies in elementary school that you would have thought I had a solo part. I believed with every fiber of my existence this truly was “the land of the free”. Today I’m a long way from those sentiments in this ever-changing world, where in order to claim fame you must be eager to degrade, exploit, mock, and attack others with a sincere heart. I find if you can do these things without a conscience they can be most effective in attaining success in our society. There are all different kinds of people in the world but the two groups that I discern most readily are the predators and the prey. Predators being bred from a stronger group having more resources and are people who will typically go to great lengths to get what they want, even if it means the destruction of others. The prey are the gentle and the meek, the vulnerable and the helpless; what some would consider the weaker group. I think it could almost be compared to the lion and the lamb in the animal kingdom. America is a country that was founded by predators and established on the laws of predatory minds. Hence the people of this country who are “willing to play the game” are bound to become predators at some point or another. The American citizen who wants to live out the “American Dream” in my opinion will not be able to without becoming something of an opportunist, liar, persecutor, or possibly a hypocrite. In our society, if you want to ‘fit in’ and not ‘rock the boat’ then sooner or later you are going to have to take a position on issues regarding morals and ethics that will either offend or reassure your fellows. These same fellows

real estate New Foreclosure Scandal Impacts LGBT Buyers and Sellers

A

new drama in the foreclosure markets has shocked the real estate industry, is another sensational scandal for the mortgage sector, and is being carefully scrutinized by many consumer watchdog groups. The gist of the fresh turmoil is simple. The fundamental legality of the foreclosure process followed by major mortgage lenders is being questioned. There is a strong possibility that tens of thousands or even millions of foreclosures that were transacted within the last 2-3 years have no sound legal basis and are, in fact, fraudulent.

are going to be the ones who make the decision as to whether you will be trusted to lead, to have power and influence, and they are easily offended! In my experience most people - not surprisingly - agree to be lead by predators. These are the people who make life exciting, get us all fired up proclaiming a desire for peace.... while sending us off the war, often quite literally! Our American leaders want peace yet our troops our dwindling daily in a senseless and needless war. Our churches are supposedly set in place to teach us about the love and the peace of God yet they are constantly protesting and marching to stop the GLBT community from having the same human rights as every one else. They are passionate about continuing the oppression of the oppressed, It is apparent that the day has not come yet where the lion will lay down with the lamb, or the predator will lay die with the prey, and as long as we can not appreciate one another for differences then there will always be division amongst us, whether it is the persecution of a pedophile or a porn star, a con-artist or congressman, a sex worker or a salesman. Until we can start to try to understand each other before passing judgment then youth of the country, like myself, will continue to grow up with a absence of faith in the country, opting for suicide (as I had tried many times my self in my teens, when my young mind first learned the truth about my church and my government and their views about people like myself). In essence, the teen suicide has made a discovery as to what it truly means to be an American – an American who is not as the majority. If I could have one wish for America, my wish would be that American leaders would revisit those policies and laws which are redundant, an echo from an age of hatred and ignorance, and with the aid of the American people change them accordingly. Moreover, I wish they would uphold those principles that to this day still ring true. Until this is done, then the great nation’s pride is its own

The enormity of it all started to come to light last month when major lenders – including J.P. Morgan Bank, Bank of America, and GMAC’s mortgage division – issued a moratorium on foreclosures to give them time to reexamine their paperwork and procedures. Fannie Mae stopped doing business with a law firm that had been handling massive numbers of their foreclosures because they question the legality of its methods, and offices of the Attorney General in all 50 states began investigating foreclosure practices. One lawyer working to process foreclosures – including those against LGBT borrowers – instructed staff members to sign about 1,000 foreclosure documents per day. That’s more than one every 30 seconds, which means it was impossible to read the documents before they were

signed. Employees of that legal firm stated under oath that when the designated signers got tired they just asked other people in the office to sign them on their behalf. So signatures on many important affidavits – like those that confirm how much a LGBT borrower owes on their mortgage – are fraudulent. Many cannot be validated, for example, because two signatures that are supposed to be from the same person bear no resemblance to one another. In other cases signatures were ostensibly witnessed in the presence of an official notary public, but the notary’s address was hundreds of miles away from the address where the documents were signed and supposedly witnessed. Bear in mind that many of the docu-

undoing. It is a hollow vanity; for if this is the land of the free and we indeed are all created equal we should the same rights and the freedom to LIFE, LIBERTY and LOVE among two (or more) consenting adults and the pursuit of happiness. With this comes the right to responsibility - to serve our country honestly as our complete selves so that those of us who show great love, and devoted service to their homelands may take there rightful place in the history books, and etched into our nation’s memory, so that the next generation will come will know with all certainty..... ALL HUMANS BEINGS WHETHER GAY,

STRIGHT, LESBIANS, BISEXUALS, OR TRANSGENDER, HAVE LEARNED, LIVED, LOVED, FOUGHT AND DIED FOR AND ON AMERICAN SOIL. I guess my question is, when will I be able to be fully American? --Written by Tela Clark, a trans woman, and a member of The Big Easy Metropolitan Community Church. The Mystery of Irma Vep at Le Chat Noir

H

aving seen The Mystery of Irma Vep, Charles Ludlam’s send-up of Victorian penny dreadfuls, twice before, including the original Ridiculous Theater production with Ludlam, as I wrote seven years ago, “things just don’t crackle.” Well, attention Sherlock Holmes—the mystery of Irma Vep has finally been solved! Directors Ricky Graham and Jeffery Roberson wisely trimmed the script, especially the exposition-drenched first act, and came up with a far, far better version that garnered laughs galore from beginning to end with nary a dull spot in between. In this mash-up of Rebecca and The Wolfman with a vampire or two thrown in as well, double entendres abound along with a sprinkling of interpolated local references that made the fun even fun-er. Graham/Roberson paced the show brilliantly, allowing an audience little time to make sense of this sophisticated nonsense. Yet they never condescended to the material or camped it up for camp’s sake, but rather infused the show with a pulsing sense of true feeling and a high

real estate ...from 26 ments themselves – even before they got processed with obviously forged signatures – were somewhat questionable. Thousands of affidavits submitted to foreclosure judges, for instance, essentially state that the mortgage company “attests to the fact” that it cannot find paperwork to prove that it has the authority to foreclose, but that the paperwork is somewhere in the lender’s files. Even though they cannot fully demonstrate that they have the right to do so, in other words, lenders are evicting LGBT homeowners and auctioning off their houses. According to reporters from NPR and the New York Times, courts and judges have been pretty much going along with the process, and in some states retired judges have been reactivated out of retirement to help process foreclosures faster. They are given benchmarks for performance based on how many foreclosures they can push through the system, and in some courts judges are ruling on as many as 1,000 cases per month. To facilitate this kind of volume many of these judges work not in traditional courtrooms but from behind desks that are literally in the hallways of courthouses. People line up in the overcrowded halls to plead their cases for keeping their homes or having loans modified, and lots of cases are heard and decided in a matter of just one or two minutes – which does not give the homeowner time to explain anything. But these observations are not limited to disgruntled LGBT borrowers or investigative reporters. There are sheriffs who have stopped enforcing foreclosure actions in their counties because they are not

stakes, life-or-death urgency. Playing roles ranging from the upright Lord and the ditsy Lady of the Manor to the stern housekeeper and the hunchbacked stableman, Graham and Varla Jean Merman (Roberson’s alter ego) layered sublime comic timing with finely calibrated acting to bring an almost operatic grandiosity to the proceedings. Graham is so convincing when portraying a woman that, when he transformed into a man, one could mistakenly have thought he was a woman in male drag. Varla added a rococo filigree to her roles with his multi-octave voice that is seemingly able to make vocalizations which most of us could not even begin to attempt. If Varla outshone Graham by a smidgen it’s only because s/he played a ukelele too! Ricky and Varla may have achieved single name status worthy of Diva-hood, but they clearly work beautifully together, neither ever trying to outdo the other. We are fortunate to have these national treasures right here in the Big Easy. James Jennings’s multi-tasking set and Cecile Casey Covert’s opulent costumes provided visual wit and allowed the cast to make stunningly quick changes from one character to another. Su Gonczy’s

convinced that lenders have enough proof. In some regions of the USA title companies have even stopped guaranteeing clear title to properties that have changed hands due to foreclosure because the title companies are not convinced that the transactions are entirely legal. Investors who put up the money for mortgages that funded properties that ended up in foreclosure are also threatening to sue banks and other lenders for negligence based on a lack of proper documentation. Many experts believe that judges will ultimately side with the powerful banking industry and rule that these foreclosure paperwork oversights are acceptable. That would help cure the bottleneck of foreclosure proceedings clogging up the courts and it would be a big boon for mortgage lenders. It would also help rid the housing market of unsold foreclosure inventories which would push real estate prices higher. But if a court does deem a foreclosure invalid, either because the lender didn\’t have the correct paperwork or because the borrower was not actually in default, the title will revert back to the original owner. That could happen even if in the meantime the home was sold through foreclosure to somebody new. Naturally this situation has many LGBT buyers and homeowners wondering what it might mean to them in terms of their financial or real estate circumstances. Right now nobody knows for certain, and only time will tell what the courts decide. Diana Shortes & Keith Launey in Frozen lighting and Thad Griffin’s sound design atmospherically transported us from the moors of Britain to the depths of an Egyptian tomb and back. The wondrous stagecraft demonstrated by the entire Vep krewe was exemplary. Would that Ludlam was still around to have seen Ricky and Varla bring his The Mystery of Irma Vep to such joyous life.

Frozen at the Shadow Box Theatre

B

ryony Lavery’s Frozen explores the nature of forgive ness as a mother, Nancy, confronts the man, Ralph, who killed her daughter many years ago. If Lavery can’t provide any definitive answers for how to deal with such a heart-wrenching situation, she cannily illuminates one woman’s attempt to move on with her life. When I saw Frozen on Broadway in 2004, I felt it could’ve been a great one act, 90 minute play rather than a l-o-n-g two act one. While it could still probably do with some trimming, Glenn Meche’s production for the new Crescent Theatre Collective was paced, if not speedily, then with a bracing forward momentum one finds in a Mahler symphony when conducted by James Levine. Meche’s precise direction created the proper tension from the start that had been

missing on Broadway. This chamber work also benefitted by being done at the intimate Shadow Box Theatre rather than a large Broadway house. As Nancy, Diana Shortes kept her emotions just below the surface until they boiled over for the least logical of reasons. Bringing more gravitas to the role than Swoosie Kurtz did in New York, Shortes journeyed from a severe, if rational, perspective to wanting revenge desperately to a seeming acceptance of her lot. At times, Shortes’ eyes darted anxiously, perhaps hoping to find her missing daughter; at others, they seemed dulled, as though overwhelmed by her tragic burden. Shortes can sometimes be an overemotive actress but, in Frozen, by reining in her feelings, she gave a potent and moving performance. Keith Launey submerged himself into Ralph, making him seem to be of average intelligence but just a bit off; how appropriate for a child killer who can actually rationalize his actions. Launey’s too friendly face could alternately scare a child and attract her into his clutches. By presenting himself as “normal,” Launey made understandable, almost, how such a deeply disturbed individual could do these things. Without ever asking for our pity, Launey made Ralph an engrossing individual.

o you feel that? What is that? I think it’s your pants expanding. Yep, it’s the holidays and I’m sure that’s exactly what it is. I suggest wearing several layers of sweatpants so that you have the possibility of working off some of those holiday calories as you walk from table to table. Nonetheless, here’s the dish on some local favorites. You’re listening up with Joey Collins.

Holiday Pleasure

F

irst things first, what are you going to eat? Whether you’re not feeling the family thing this year or you are spending it with your alternate family, your friends, where would you like to eat on Thanksgiving Day? If you’re like me, you most definitely do not want to cook. I mean why cook? By the time you finish off your meal you’re going to want to be moving onto your fifth cocktail and by that time dishes are out of the question. Don’t worry, I have you covered. Hilton Lafayette, Acadiana’s premiere full-service hotel and conference center, will be hosting a Thanksgiving Day Dinner beginning at 5pm. This award-winning staff plans to welcome you with the ultimate Thanksgiving buffet. The menu includes the following: salad bar, carved ham with orange and maple glaze, roasted turkey with giblet gravy, macaroni and cheese, rice dressing, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole, candied yams, corn maque choux, and assorted desserts. Rick Rown, Corporate Sales Manager, excitedly discussed the traditions of Hilton Lafayette. “We always grow very anxious during the holiday season. It becomes a very welcoming experience for not only our guests from out of town but our guests who live locally as well. Each holiday meal is prepared with care just as your mother or grandmother would prepare it.” If you’re 65 years of age or older (Rick Rowan) then the price of $9.95 is almost a steal. Adults are $16.95, children 5 to 12 years are $9.95, and 5 years and under complimentary. For reservations you may call 337.235.6111, extension 2253, or visit their website at lafayette.hilton.com. The venue will be Alexander’s Restaurant on the Lobby Level. Interested in an Acadian experience? A staple in the downtown Lafayette area, The Original Don’s Downtown, features their annual Thanksgiving Day feast. With such items as roasted turkey, cornbread dressing, pecan pie, Waldorf salad, sweet potato casserole, and more, you’re in for a unique Acadian experience. Even if that does not satisfy you, Don’s will also offer items off of its awardwinning menu. Seating times begin at 11am but one must hurry because when I called the 11am seating was already booked and the earliest one was now available for 1:30pm. For reservations contact The Original Don’s Downtown at 337.235.3551 or visit their website at donsdowntown.com. One last suggestion always brings the kid out in me. The images of a Sunday afternoon and standing in a line filled with finely dressed people in coats, ties, and smeared gaudy makeup with long church dresses still remain fresh in my mind. What else would I be talking about besides Piccadilly? Piccadilly, America’s cafeteria, will be offering a Thanksgiving feast as well. The traditional items such as turkey, rice dressing, and pecan pie will be served alongside the traditional items of Piccadilly. For more information you can contact the Johnston Street location at 337.984.7876 or the one in the Oil Center at 337.232.4317.

he past two weeks have been very busy for both Tonic and Jules Downtown. Jules recently hosted its annual Moulin Rouge Party and participants were whisked away with a French burlesque theme complete with the can-can dance. Local DJ, DJ Digital, had the house jumping and lived up to his reputation. Tonic hosted the National Mr. and Miss Apollo Party with a magnificent reunion, so to speak, of the Apollo krewes from across the Gulf Coast. An amazing display of talent was displayed in the art of fashion, performance, style, and class. Tonic of Lafayette and Crystal’s of Lake Charles has announced One Messy Weekend. This spectacle, beginning on Friday, December 17th, and running till Sunday, December 19th, will feature the famous Bianca del Rio as Cher. The event will stretch from Tonic to Crystal’s. Much more is soon come on the event so

trodding the boards ...from 38 Shortes and Launey combined for a great scene when, after having served many years in prison, Nancy visits Ralph there and each tries to bridge the huge gulf between them. Portraying Agnetha, an academic involved with serial killers and their rehabilitation, Liz Mills was burdened with the please stay tuned. Jules will be hosting its annual Acadiana CARES fundraiser, The Red Party, as a benefit to raise HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and support for the local community. Dress in red and impress on Saturday, December 4th. Doors open at 8pm and a percent of the proceeds will be donated to Acadiana CARES.

oliday season in Acadiana can be one non-stop party. From holiday parties to office parties and a party just because it’s a Monday night, make sure that you keep it safe. The presence of the police is always heightened at this time. Enjoy the presence of friends and family, try to find the good person from within, and enjoy the party. As always, keep the party going. You’re listening up with Joey Collins, girl!

least well-written and developed role. Compared to the other, more compelling characters, it’s hard to care about Agnetha’s romantic break-up. An always fine actress, as was recently seen in reasons to be pretty, Mills did as much as she could— which was considerable—to bring Agnetha to life but even she couldn’t overcome the mere melodrama of this storyline. Eric Martin Webb fittingly lit the women in warm oranges and Ralph in cold blues. This was a simple but powerful production, made all the more effective by its simplicity. I look forward to the Crescent Theatre Collective’s future offerings.
