Gay Easter Parade Wrap-up, Parade to Donate Over $25,000 to Food For Friends

T

he 2nd Bunnies In The Big Easy: Put The Good Back in Friday was hosted Friday, April 22nd at Harrah's Masquerade Club. The 12th Gay Easter Parade rolled through the streets of the French Quarter on Easter Sunday, April 24th. Due to press deadlines, details from these final two events will not appear until the May 10th edition of Ambush, as well as the complete financial report. The success of this year's 5-week run up to Easter with five great fundraisers will allow the Gay Easter Parade to donate over $25,000 to Food For Friends this year, an amazing feat in just five weeks. The parade minus expenses benefits Food For Friends, a vital program of the NO/AIDS Task Force, and $80,825 (not including this year) has been raised for charity in the past nine years. The parade is presented by Ambush Mag, LSGRA, Harrah's New Orleans, and Friday Night Before Mardi Gras. Gulf Restoration Gets Overwhelming Support from Voters Nationwide

O

n the first anniversary of the start of the BP Gulf oil disaster, new polling released shows that voters nationwide overwhelmingly support efforts to ensure that any fines paid by BP and others responsible for the spill are dedicated to restoring the region. Under the Clean Water Act (CWA), BP’s fines will be deposited into the Federal Treasury unless Congress takes specific action to direct the penalties to Gulf restoration. The bipartisan polling, conducted by Democratic polling firm Lake Research Partners and GOP polling firm Bellwether Research and Consulting, showed that 83 percent of voters support efforts to dedicate the BP oil spill penalties toward restoration of the Mississippi River Delta and Gulf Coast, and 69 percent strongly support it. The poll also showed that support for restoration is strong across party lines with 90 percent (76 percent strongly) of Democrats, 84 percent (69

percent strongly)of independents, 76 percent (60 percent strongly) of Republicans, and 78 percent (62 percent strongly) of those who say they agree with the Tea Party movement in favor of such a proposal. “This issue is strong and intense for voters of all partisan stripes,” said Celinda Lake, president of Lake Research Partners. “Not only do they strongly believe in restoring the Mississippi River Delta and Gulf Coast and holding BP and others responsible for the oil spill accountable for their actions, but they also understand the key economic role that this region plays across the country.” “The data is very clear that Republicans stand with Democrats and independents in wanting the BP fines to go back to Gulf restoration, even when presented with the option to direct these funds toward reducing the deficit or other pressing issues,” added Christine Matthews, president of Bellwether Research and Consulting. Also, a coalition of 261 businesses, elected officials, faith groups and other organizations from the Gulf region and around the country signed a letter to leaders in Congress calling for BP penalties under the CWA to go to restora-

tion in the Gulf. “This is a make or break moment for the Gulf, and we need your leadership,” reads an excerpt from the letter. “The nation needs a healthy Gulf. The region is the backbone of our economy – and the financial strength of the region is intrinsically tied to its environmental well-being.” The letter also highlights statistics that underscore the connection between the Gulf region’s environmental and economic health: * The Gulf currently supports a $34 billion per year tourism industry, and its fisheries support an estimated $22.6 billion dollars in seafood and commercial and recreational fishing-related activity. (Oxfam America/Center for American Progress) * The Gulf produces roughly 40 percent of all the seafood in the lower 48 states. (National Marine Fisheries Service) The polling—sponsored by the Gulf Renewal Project—was designed and administered by telephone, using professional interviewers. The survey reached a total of 1,006 likely general election voters nationwide. The survey was conducted April12-17, 2011. The margin of error for this poll is +/-3.1%.

Orange Flower Water at The Elm Theatre through May 14

O

range Flower Water is a simple tale of suburban, small town life. David, a pharmacist, is married to Cathy, a high school music teacher. Housewife Beth is married to Brad, a video store manager. Beth and David are in the midst of an affair. Out of this seemingly melodramatic material, Craig Wright has spun a story that hits at the core of what it means to love, and the pleasures and responsibilities that come with it. What started for Beth and David as platonic friendship has developed into physical romance shoe-horned in amidst PTA meetings and chauffeuring their teenage kids around to various activities. The question is, can their momentary satisfactions be the basis of a longer-lasting commitment?

Kerry Cahill & Garrett Prejean in Orange Flower Water While we root for Beth and David,

Wright refuses to make villains out of Brad and Cathy. Brad knows he’s a prick, but Wright makes clear that pricks have feelings too and wisely keeps Brad from doing anything whereby an audience might lose any sympathy we have for him. Cathy, logical and orderly, might be the most well-adjusted of the bunch, but she exhibits a controlling streak that could understandably dim David’s ardor for her after all these years. Wright’s dialog is so natural that, in the close confines of the Elm Theater, the production takes on a “You Are There” quality with some scenes evincing an almost painful intimacy. Mark Routhier’s direction is his most fully formed I’ve seen yet. Like a masterful conductor, he brought out each of the relationships’ essential characteristics without rushing anything, and let the pauses speak for themselves, while steadfastly keeping sentimentality at bay. The cast imparted a haunting überreal humanity to each of Wright’s jewellike cameo portraits. Without ever overdoing it, Kerry Cahill’s transparent face imparted a myriad of emotions, some not even fully-formed before another took its place. At times, her pain was so tangible you wanted to embrace and cuddle her like a small wounded animal. And though Beth asserted “I have dreams”, Cahill implied that they were of the nascent variety as though Beth had yet to ascertain exactly what they were. On the surface, David appears to be a decent guy, but Garrett Prejean conveyed a subliminal snarkiness, keeping the audience guessing as to how much he really loves Beth and how much he just wants to get in her pants. If David’s frustration at not being able to live up to his and Beth’s dreams was palpable, Prejean kept it in check so that his ultimate happiness seemed an apt reward for his triumphing over life’s challenges. Will Schneider made Brad suitably oafish but never stupid so that his was a credible self-awareness. Schneider’s desperation-laced machismo appropriately infused Brad and Beth’s breakup scene with the potential for danger. Completing the quartet, Veronica Russell brought a down-to-earth wryness to Beth while making clear she Oz, 800 Bourbon St., New Orleans; and Friday, May 13th, 11pm, Marcy Marcell's Lucky #13 Tribute, Cutter's, 706 Franklin, New Orleans. Ambush will release a complete financial statement following the May 14th celebration. See pages 20, 40, 43, and 45 for more on Marcy Marcell. knew how to look out for Number One. Though there’s an certain patness to Orange Flower Water’s short scenes, as though they were schematically meant to fit in-between commercials, and a final monolog that spells everything out a bit preciously, this may not be too surprising given Wright’s background in writing for television (Six Feet Under, Lost, Brothers & Sisters, etc.). Still, if Orange Flower Water is more small screen than grand theater, both the script and this production are extremely high quality TV indeed.

Dead Man’s Cell Phone at Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans through April 30

A

fter so many fine productions including Mama Drama, Twilight of the Golds, Extremities, Dinner with Friends, and a slew of Neil LaBute plays, Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans stumbles badly with Sarah Ruhl’s Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Cell Phone is not a great play to begin with. After a promising first scene in which a young lady in a café answers a ringing cell phone only to find out that its owner has just died, it soon turns preposterous as she gets involved with his bizarre family and his business which happens to involve buying and selling human organs. Ruhl gets off a few good observations about modern day communication, or the lack thereof, but otherwise her script seems like a sophomoric writing exercise. There’s something to be said for someone who makes things up, as the young lady here does, in order to please people and make them feel better, but Cell Phone’s characters and plot machinations are so cartoonish and unbelievable that, unleavened with any true wit, they quickly become tiresome. René J.F. Piazza’s direction lacks its usual polish but is at least competent. What is surprising, however, is that the cast he assembled is more “community theater” than the level of talent I’ve become accustomed to at ATNO. While it wasn’t painful to watch them (I have seen worse), they were unable to shape fully these quirky characters or pull off Ruhl’s arch dialog. Margeaux Fanning, as Hermia, the dead man’s widow, was slightly better than the rest but, admittedly, that isn’t saying too much. And while the cast should conclusively decide if the accent in “Hermia” is on the first or second syllable and whether “Gottlieb” is pronounced “Gottleeb” or “Gotlib”, someone should inform them that the 17th century English poet is pronounced “Done” not “Don”. In the meantime, this is a cell phone better left unanswered.

urrently dusting the sand off the bottom of my feet; had to spend a vacation at the beach in Mexico just so that I could relax, rest, tan, and ready myself for one of the best cultural events around. I’m talking about Festival International de Louisiane. Yep, it’s finally that time of year again so here’s the dish on what all should experience.

Festival International

L

afayette’s time to shine is each year in late April when downtown lights up with Festival International. For over twenty years this FREE festival highlights a plethora of worldly cultures. Participants can expect to experience an array of food, arts and crafts, jewelry, apparel, and music from around the world. Each year over four stages simultaneously display free concerts from several music genres from around the world. Beginning on Wednesday, April 27th and lasting through Sunday, May 1st; over 300,000 people will descend to the downtown area and take part in everything the Festival has to offer. You’re lucky if you’re able to experience everything that is featured. The best way to make sure that you don’t miss a thing is by downloading the Festival International app for your smart phone. Whether you’re an iPhone user (good for you) or an Android user (not so good for you) there is an app for that. If you so happen to lack the tech savvy smart phone then you can do things the old fashioned way…go to their website (www.festivalinternational.com) and check out an official festival map and festival schedule and then print it all out and bring it with you to the festival. Wow, when did that become the old fashion way? Nonetheless, both the website and the app have tons of useful information. For example, with the app you can create your own personal schedule by choosing from the list of concerts on the main schedule. Even more fun is that you can go to the actual website, create a personal schedule, and then sync it to your mobile app. Sure beats printing out a schedule (the old fashion way) and walking around like a tourist lost in NYC. Also available within both the app and the website; one can click on any item on the schedule and find detailed information about the particular artists. Details include a brief biography and description of music, photos and videos of performances, and comments. Other information included is social media information such as Twitter,

Facebook, and YouTube and local sponsors. Sponsorship is one of the most important aspects of the festival. In order to keep this a free festival it is important to support local sponsors. It’s also possible for attendees to do their part in supporting the festival by buying a festival pin, shirt, or any other memorabilia. Such pins and shirts have become collector’s items for many festival-goers. Pins often run out very quickly and can be bought from the festival website or during the festival at any festival merchandise tent. While at festival, don’t forget to check out many other cultural venues such as Cite des Arts, Acadiana Center for the Arts, Blue Moon Saloon, Artmosphere, and of course Jules Downtown. Jules will be extending its hours to service the festival. Opening at 11am each day from Wednesday through Sunday, Jules will be the perfect spot to take a break, cool off, have a drink, and be a meeting spot for friends. Many thanks and appreciation goes out to the many festival volunteers, sponsors, and staff who work year round to help make each year a success.

Recapping a Night Cap

S

o you know how you plan a big surprise for someone but then they end up planning an even bigger surprise on you? Then it kind of backfires on you and I guess the joke ends up being on you, right? Ugh, I hate when that happens…unless of course it’s not me who is involved. Then it’s just funny. Such an event occurred recently at Tonic. For many of you who were there to witness this, it was one of the best moments at Tonic and will probably be a memory which lives on for many years to come. So here is the scenario. Brodie Mess, as selfless and thoughtful that he can be (who knew), decided that he wanted to throw a surprise party for both Macky Ray and Steven Reed. The two luckily shared a birthday and celebrated by taking a trip together to NYC. Lucky bitches! As a birthday/bon voyage stunt, Miss Mess decided that he wanted to surprise the two by jumping out of a giant cake during Tonic’s Tuesday Night Talent Show. All worked out as planned…so to say…and the crowd went wild. Both Macky and Steven were very surprised. Just when you thought there were no more surprises, one lurked just around the corner. Well more so behind Miss Mess than around the cor-

ner. As Miss Mess sat inside of her giant cake and greeted the audience with her entertaining taunts, Macky held a very large sheet cake right behind her. Before Miss Mess even knew what was going on, Macky slammed the entire cake right into her face. A moment of shock followed by screams filled the entire club. I believe it took her a moment to realize what had happened. Guess the joke ended up on Miss Mess. I’m pretty sure the stunt is somewhere on YouTube or Facebook or something. Just search for Tonic or Brodie Mess. Thanks to Miss Mess for being a great sport and contributing to a very entertaining and memorable moment.

Bar Spill

A

s usual, if you have yet to experience Tuesday Night Talent Show at Tonic then you have no idea what you’re missing. Well I guess you do but why sit there and relive it second hand via some guy sitting on a computer typing it all out for you to only read about in Ambush or at AmbushMag.COM? It’s time for you to experience a fun-filled Tuesday night. Of course other things occur at Tonic on a weekly basis. Monday night is Customer Appreciation Night with Steven Reed and Beer Pong Tournament with Brodie Lee Meche (Not to be confused with Brodie Mess). Wednesday Night is karaoke with DJ Chad Evans followed by Thursday Night where for only $15 you can drink all you want and request all the songs you want from DJ Point-N-Click. Ladies Night then rings in the weekend each and every Friday night. Jules is also the best venue when you’re downtown for either out at Downtown Alive on a Friday night or especially as a nice cool break during festival season. Every other Friday Valerie Sugarbaker provides a drag show that gets many audience members excited for the weekend. As always, Saturday

nights at Jules are simply klassy with a capital ‘K’. Jules has recruited two more DJs, Jarrad Delcambre and Jared Vance. This gives even more reasons why one should check out Jules. The best part is when bartenders jump out the bar and start giving out the infamous free shots on the bar. If you haven’t experienced it then it’s a must. You just have to stick around because you never know when the shots will creep up on you. Don’t forget that each and every Thursday Night Blake Duhon hosts a very fun-filled karaoke night. Who knew you could have so much fun with a gaggle of drunken gay guys mixed in with some classy lesbians and the ever-supportive straight boys and girls who come to fulfill their curiosity? It happens all the time on Thursday nights at Jules Downtown. A special shout out to the newest employees of Jules: Joey Chitwood, Gabe Andrews, and Tonya Hughes. Side note to you three: Forget whatever rules Darren and Justin have told you for there is only one rule and that is do NOT touch my glass. See you around! Remember you can follow all of these venues and more on Facebook. Go to the fan pages of Jules, Tonic Lafayette, Lafayette Lesbians, Lafayette Gay Men, and Ambush Magazine and don’t forget to check out AmbushMag.COM.

Closing Out

H

opefully I have persuaded most of you, especially those from out of the area, to attend Festival International. Whether you come for a day, afternoon, evening, or the entire weekend I feel confident enough when I say that it will be worth your time. I look forward to seeing everyone in the downtown area. As always, drive very safely and do NOT drink and drive. It’s no secret that many have recently acquired an OWI. Keep it safe, Acadiana! And as always, keep the party going!

Interview: Felice Picano

T

he Saints and Sinners Literary Festival begins on Thursday, May 12. It is a four day event each Spring that features panel discussions and master classes on literary topics that provide a forum for authors, editors and publishers to talk about their work for the benefit of emerging writers and the enjoyment of fans of LGBT literature. Recently I got the opportunity to speak with one of their most notable speakers this year Felice Picano. Felice Picano is the author of 24 books of poetry, fiction, memoirs, nonfiction and plays. His work has been translated into fifteen languages. An honorary Saints and Sinner Festival “Saint” Picano recently became a Lambda Literary Foundation “Pioneer.” His recent publications include Art & Sex in Greenwich Village (2007) and a new production of his third play The Bombay Trunk, was a hit in Palm Springs. He guest-edited Volume 7 of the Parisbased Van Gogh’s Ear magazine (2010), and with Prof. Lazaro Lima compiled an anthology of GLBT LatinoAmerican fiction for the University of Wisconsin Press, titled Ambientes. Chelsea Station Editions published Picano new collection, True Stories: Portraits in the Spring of 2011. TL: Have you ever been to New Orleans before? FP: Yes, many times, although it has been about three years since my last visit. I have been here for various conferences and one year the Tennessee Williams Festival did one of my plays. But I have not been to a Saints and Sinners Festival since before Katrina. TL: Your newest publication True Stories: Portraits is getting some great reviews, tell me about it. FP: These have been some of the best reviews I have gotten from one of my books. Surprisingly, I was writing this book without really knowing I was doing it. I have been writing pieces of

it over the years as I met famous people. TL: Can you give me an example? FP: Someone had said once that Diana Vreeland had never been interviewed, but years ago when I was much younger I actually did interview her. This is when I had one of those life-changing moments. That is when I decided to go from being an artist to a writer. TL: Your current book has many stories about the celebrities you have known, are there many more not included? FP: There are lots more. I am in my sixties now, so the people I was friendly with thirty years ago are finishing off their lives. I begin to see their lives in perspective. When you live in Los Angeles, you are always bumping into famous people; the streets here are littered with them. TL: Any of the stories not published you can tell me about? FP: I met Mickey Rooney at this dinner once and we were seated at the same table. He had just had cataract surgery and needed help maneuvering his way to the restroom. So basically I had to escort him to the restroom. So you never know. TL: A New Orleans famous son Tennessee Williams is also mentioned in your book. FP: He had heard about me and actually had a character in his play Out Cry based on me. His name was even Felice. So he wrote about me without having yet met me. Years after he died, his brother Dakin gave a memento of his. It was a very sweet gesture. TL: Tell me about Bette Midler? FP: She is a fabulous, funny and very smart lady. My high school friend Jerry Black worked with her in her first fifteen years of show business, before she was a star. I met her through him. One thing I have to say is she is an extremely hard worker. TL: Do you have a follow up sequel to this book? FP: I could, I met so many people when I was young. But then I was naïve and oblivious, I only paid attention to things that affected my life. Like when I lived in Manhattan, one day I was trying to catch a cab with some friends and this woman tried to jump in front of us and take our cab. So I shoved back and told her to get away lady and we got in the cab. As we were driving away, my friend told me that I had just shoved Angela Landsbury. TL: In addition to writing, you are also a publisher and editor? FP: I was publisher of the Seaorse Press. I published books by authors such as Dennis Cooper, Doric Wilson, Brad Gooch, Clark Henley, Martin Duberman and Robert Gluck. I also handled Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy. TL: Tell me about your plays? FP: Two more popular plays of mine are the Bombay Trunk and

Ingoldsby. The Bombay Trunk was originally done in San Francisco in 2002 and is sort of wacky with a serious message. There are comedy and thrills. Ingoldsby is based on a short novel I wrote about time travel. The action takes place between the 1940’s and the present. It is another comedy and has a major gay character in it. TL: Are you working on anything new? FP: I am working on a play called Falling which is a serious play, funny at times, but it has to do with 9/11. I had lived in New York, but at the time of the event I was in LA and my friend called me early in the morning so I was experiencing everything in real time. TL: What are you looking forward to doing when you come back to New Orleans? FP: I cannot wait to eat, party and enjoy the literary festival. I love just visiting my favorite restaurants and haunts around the French Quarter and the Garden District. I also like perusing the many used book stores you have in the city. I find lots of weird 19th century ones. I personally am excited about this year’s Saints and Sinners Festival, there lineup of speakers this year is outstanding. It is a wonderful chance for you to mix and mingle with your favorite authors of LGBT works. For information on the events or tickets, go to www.sasfest.org.

April Showers Bring May Events

A

pril showers do bring May flowers and the first gay Mardi Gras krewe event is all about flowers. Celebrating their 10th anniversary, the Mystic Krewe of Satyricon is tying in all their events with one of the ball themes from the past nine years. Our first event is Satyricon in Bloom, a delectable springtime bake sale. The event happens on Saturday, May 7 (just in time for Mother’s Day) from 1 to 5pm at Napoleon’s Itch. The event will feature cakes and other baked good auctioned off by celebrity auctioneers and led by Becky Allen. We will also be premiering our signature Ken Cake series. So forget your easy bake oven and come buy a scrumptious cake, pie or other dessert. They will make a great gift for your mother or you can just take it home and enjoy the entire thing by yourself. Either way, you are supporting a wonderful gay carnival krewe. Also in May, the Krewe of Satyricon is bringing back cabaret legend Karen Akers on Thursday, May 26 at 8pm at Le Chat Noir. She will be performing songs from her upcoming show beginning in September at the famous Algonquin Hotel. This show will feature the songs of Rodgers and Hart, Irving Berlin, Sondheim and Cole Porter as well as the French language

classics we love so much. Tickets are $30. Le Chat Noir is located at 715 St. Charles Ave. For more information, call 504.525.4498. The Krewe of Petronius is having their Cocktails and Crowns party on May 21 at the M Francis Gallery from 7 – 10pm. This is a very fun event that includes food, free flowing cocktails and a silent auction. People are encouraged to wear their best and most regal rhinestone studded crowns or tiaras. For more information or to buy tickets, call 504.701.0631. Tickets are $30 and the gallery is located at 604 Julia Street in the heart of the Warehouse District.

s most of you are aware by now, the great Marcy Marcell, dubbed as the Queen of Rampart Street, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2011. I met Marcy Marcell for the first time in 2002 when I went to Rusty LaRoux’s New Zoo Review at Big Daddy’s. She was introduced to me by my new friend Princesse Stephaney and I immediately liked Marcy. We were both very boisterous Italians so of course we hit it off. She had one of those personalities that were larger than life. She embodied everything festive and flamboyant about the French Quarter to me. She in my opinion was a true New Orleans lady, bawdy, ballsy and brazen. I was always in awe of her performances. While all the other girls did a number that lasted three minutes, Marcy believed in showmanship and would do a medley of Irma Thomas’ best hits that would last nine to ten minutes for her first number.

But it wasn’t until we were grand marshals together for the Gay Easter Parade two years ago when we became real close, realizing what a truly special person she was. We were thrown together on many occasions during that time it seemed we were joined at the hip. I still vividly remember the day Rip and Marsha asked me to come for a drink at Starlight by the Park to talk over a few things. Marcy was bartending and we all sat down and that is when he asked us to be grand marshals of the parade. It was one of those defining moments in your life that you always cherish. We all embraced, had cocktails and laughed [continued on 42]

under the gaydar ...from 40 for hours. A sweet memory emblazoned in my brain of this wonderful woman. It is somehow strange that the small moments of your life can be the most significant. How I wish I could go back to that afternoon again. During that Easter season, we would sit for hours after an event and she would regale me with stories of French Quarter past when drag shows were all the rage. Those were the days of the Club My Oh My and Gunga Din. She always called people Pussycat and had words of encouragement for all the new ladies coming up in the ranks. She gave many of them their start in her shows when others would not give them the time of day. Even though the girls were obviously lacking basic drag skills and performed horribly on stage, Marcy would give them encouragement and a kind word. It brightened their world and gave them hope. She was a person who knew that you had to live your dream, keep persevering, and do not let anyone squash that flame in you. She cared for everyone, if you were her friend, you were golden. She was like a mama bear protecting her young. No one better mess with you. She watched over all of us, some of us never really knowing she was so sick in the end. There were so many things I wished I had to the opportunity to tell her. The week before her death, my life was crazy, work, deadlines, parties, the usual stuff of your daily grind. I told myself there was plenty of time to see her next week or maybe call her tomorrow. But tomorrow never came and our time ran out. I never had the chance to tell her how much I loved her or how much she meant to me and all who knew her. My guilt was unbearable. I found myself questioning my own loyalty toward people in my life, my friendships and what was important to me. I was ashamed of myself and felt angry with people who only knew Marcy a short time but acted as if they were long fast friends. But that was my own self-reproach talking. I recognized I had only known Marcy since 2002, how could I feel the same about her as people who have been friends with her since the sixties. The answer was very clear, even though I knew her a brief time she made a difference in my life. This went the same for others. That is what she did; she made an impact in people. And on Sunday, April 17 at her celebration of life event at Kajun's Pub, I performed a number as my alter ego, Antoinette Ella Chardonnay. Yes, I was one of those bad drag queens I described earlier. But I did this charity event for Amon-Ra earlier in the day and decided to stay in drag to do a number in memory of Marcy. I chose the song “Fame” because that song best de-

scribes my feelings about Marcy. She truly will live forever in our hearts. Jumping around on stage in front of her family acting like a crazed wild woman, gave me closure in a way. The audience cheered and showered me with money that will all go to her memorial that will take place on May 14. I was exhausted from wearing heels all day and channeled all my energy into the song, and for this amateur, that was a miracle. While on stage, something in me changed. Her sister hugged me and pulled me close, and I know this sounds silly, but I felt Marcy’s energy and spirit in her. It was like Marcy hugged me herself. I had my closure. Goodnight my sweet Pussycat, until we meet again, thank you for enriching my life and the lives of so many others. You are a true French Quarter Legend.

Easter Events Revisited

E

aster events have been right on track with the 9th Annual Spring Fever Event at 4 Seasons in Metairie on Friday, April 8. The courtyard was festively decorated that night and we had incredible weather which just enhanced everyone’s celebratory moods. There was a major spread put forth by Chuck and Bill and the entertainment that night was star studded. Easter Grand Marshals and GEP Board members Tittie Toulouse and Electra City were splendid as emcees for the evening and got things moving at a good pace. Taking the stage was Starr Daniels, Cathy Fox, Johnny Passion, Safonda Peters, Regina Adams, Rikki Redd and The Lady Hope to name a few. The auctions went well and we raised $2,339 for Food for Friends. Keeping with the tradition of great events, the Purple Party on Saturday, April 16 was a huge success. This was one of the best deals in the city that night. For a five dollar admission, you got an incredible buffet, a small show, a live auction and fun egg raffles with

great prizes. We raised $6,927 here and everyone had a gay old time. There was even a celebration of Chuck and Bill’s 40th anniversary. There was a special fund raised for a silver sponsorship in the Gay Easter Parade for Marcy Marcell, and Bill Miller donated a gold sponsorship for Marcy as well. My dear you will be there after all. The color purple does mean royalty and everyone that night was treated like kings and queens. Another fabulous event that same weekend that did not have to do with the Gay Easter Parade but was still themed for the season was Amon-Ra’s Playboy Bunny Reject pageant. People dressed as playboy bunny castoffs and performed for tips for the krewe. The person who raised the most money through tips and a basket they put together won. This event was not just fun, it was a laugh a minute riot with hosts Easter Grand Marshals Gary Vandeventer and Elizabeth Bouvier. They had six standout contestants who had a wonderful time and raised a lot of money for the krewe. Brent from the Krewe of Petronius who looked ravishing and a total Loni Anderson doppelganger came in third place. I also hear that they especially had a knockout contestant named Antoinette Ella Chardonnay who came in second place. She may not have been Miss Congeniality or very pretty, but she can work a crowd. Actually Robert as Miss June with tight abs and a cute smile won the pageant. But if I read the rule book correctly, if he is unable to perform his duties as Playboy Bunny Reject, then the title goes to the second place winner. I am brushing up on my speeches that I will have to give at store openings, ladies luncheons and Rotary Club meetings. I know this is slightly presumptuous of me, but one never knows when he may fall down a flight of stairs because someone carelessly dropped marbles on them. Just saying accidents happen.

Tony’s Tidbits of Gay Wisdom Chuck Turner & Bill Miller celebrate their 40th Anniversary @ 12th Purple Party

E

veryone does drag eventually so for all you men out there channel your inner woman now and accept it. Whether you are gay or straight, men secretly

want to know what it feels like to be a girl. If you do not believe me, just look at the major evidence when the Saints won the Superbowl, thousands of men followed Bobby Hebert through the streets of New Orleans donned in female apparel. Some men even dressed their young sons in girl’s clothes. In growing up, I always knew women had the power. They could get men to do what they wanted by just a wave of their hand or a toss of their hair. Women were refined and elegant, whereas men were rough and tumble. We grew up watching how Scarlett O’ Hara would get anything she wanted just by batting her eyes. Who doesn’t want that power? And on stage, all of the great divas were female, except for maybe Sir Elton John. They sang songs of longing that seemed to reach down into your core. They talked about things that related to gay men. Have I ever done drag? My alter ego Antoinette Ella Chardonnay made an appearance last year and for a few special charities, I brought her back recently as you will see in this issue. But I found out one thing, when you change your persona to a woman, all of a sudden the rules change. You become bolder, you flirt with men that you would be too shy to speak to as a boy. You feel taller than you have ever felt before (heels will do that for you), you feel pretty, you feel reinvented. Welcome to your new world. Things change, ideals are shattered and you become limitless to the possibilities. For those who are bashful, becoming a woman gives you strength that you may have never thought you had. It is more than just a fetish; it is a performance art that requires a lot of work, education and yes, money. Makeup, clothes, nails, and all the trappings that go into being a drag queen or a female illusionist do not come cheap. With the passing of Marcy Marcell, I thought it was fitting to talk about this dying art. Many years ago, all the great theatrical female roles were played by men since women were not allowed on the stage at that time, so hence the drag queen was born. So embrace the woman in you and next time there is a holiday, let her out and see what doors become open to you.

Marcy Marcell by Larry Graham, GrahamStudioOne.COM arcy and I had been friends for many years, when she sat for this particular portrait. Months before, I began an ongoing series called, French Quarter Icons. Reluctantly, she agreed to sit for me as an Icon, Queen of Rampart Street. I had photographed her several times in my studio, both before and after, for various reasons, birthdays, Easter Grand Marshal, publicity shots, etc..... but, this day was different. She was excited to have a great show every week, she looked fabulous, and she had a new love in her life. I picked her up that day at her home and drove her to the studio. I had some of her favorite wine chilled, played some Patsy Cline, and for the next two hours, had the best visit we’ve ever had. Marcy possessed such an uncommon, inner beauty, even strangers recognized it. The very moment she would begin a story, spoke of her friends, or told

M

you about her new show, you knew instantly, her heart was in every word. I’ve always adored people who made me feel better about life, myself and others. She did have a way about her. She told me this portrait was her favorite one ever. It must have been, just three days before she died, she called me to say she would like me to print her a poster of her ICON picture to give to her health care worker friend. I didn’t catch his name but, it was important to her that she give him one. I decided Marcy Marcell deserved an upgrade to “French Quarter

Legends, Queen of Rampart Street.” ..and she was. Like everyone, I thought we would have Marcy in our lives forever. She was an inspiration to me and so many others. Beautiful souls like Marcy’s, are rare.... rare indeed.
