By the end, after lifefulness to what on the page can Andrew has set her up on a blind date come off as flat and by-thenumbers. Though the Shadowbox space is not always the most conducive to graceful staging, I wish, however, that Clements had arrayed his actors so that their backs faced the audience less often. And at the risk of being nitpicky, there were a few details, like the color of the wine or Susan’s casually reading a magazine during a heated scene that seemed out of place for such a comedy of bad manners where appearance often counts for Joe Seibert, Angela Papale and Leon more than substance. Contavesprie in Becky Shaw The final “Becky Shaw”, Angela Papale’s portrayal of with his wife Suzanna’s best friend her, may be the best. been useful. An eminently likable person, Contavesprie has played the cad before in Fat Pig; I’d be curious to see what he’d do with a role more in the Jimmy Stewart vein. As Suzanna, Becky Shaw marks Caitlin Clifford’s first time back on stage since her Ambie-nominated performance in Loyola’s Bright Ideas four years ago. Here, after a slightly brittle start (the script’s fault as well), Clifford finds the proper, more naturalistic vibe as a spoiled girl forced to grow up. A 20something, Clifford is about 10 years too young for the role; not a biggie but it does bring a slightly different dimension to Gionfriddo’s tale. Joe Seibert strikes just the right empathetic notes as Suzanna’s laidback, would-be writer husband while Mary Pauley gets the best lines and takes full advantage of them as Suzanna’s overbearing mother. Seeing Becky Shaw, with the exception of Becky Shaw herself, I wished that the characters were a little less predictable. Another audience member, however, fully enjoyed watching those that were a reflection of people he knows. For the cost of little more than a movie ticket, you have one weekend left to judge this provocative entertainment for yourself.

Widow Bride at Slidell Little Theatre through March 18

T

here is perhaps nothing more challenging in the world of theater than putting on an original musical. Thus Slidell Little Theatre is to be commended for producing John Giraud’s Widow Bride a new work about the aftereffects of a soldier’s death in the first Gulf War on his wife and extended family. Giraud paints a warm-hearted picture as Maggie tries to deal with a teenage son prone to fights and a young daughter determined to get her own way. There’s Maggie’s lesbian sister Marie (aka Gus) who’s raising her own daughter, Priscilla, and their mentally-challenged but fairly high-functioning brother Mark. Add in their loving Father, Maggie’s abrasive mother-in law, and various love interests and it’s quite a cast of characters. Giraud has a way with a melody best heard in such fun songs as Dysfunction, When We Were Kids, and Awaken the Inner Diva as well as the more touching Why Didn’t He Leave Me Alone? and the gospel-tinged finale, Forevermore. Clearly a talented man (he was an Ambie nominee last year for Musical Director for Evita), Giraud may have bitten off more than he c ould chew by directing and leading the Widow Bride’s four piece orchestra in addition to doing the book and score. For, in a case like this, one needs a more objective pair of eyes, usually

provided by a director, to help whip the material into shape. As it is, Giraud’s book does not always well-serve the story he wishes to tell. For despite love in a variety of forms, family in-fighting, a special needs relative, economic and employment challenges, there’s surprisingly little tension in the libretto. We watch as Maggie et al. deal with their problems but things are resolved with a minimum of drama; that might be great in real life but in the theater it makes for a too low key evening. Even a potentially life-threatening fire comes and goes without raising the show’s temperature by too many degrees. Giraud’s conceit that Maggie reads and re-reads the letters sent to her by husband Marshall from the front may be valid, but is too passive a devise; unfortunately, the settings of these letters, sung by Marshall in flashback, are the weakest songs in the score. Michael Ducre as Marshall doesn’t help; while a solid presence, too often his singing was flat. I’d rather Giraud had eliminated Marshall altogether and concentrated on enriching the other characters’ roles which in turn would allow an audience to be more invested in them emotionally. Giraud would benefit from simply restructuring some of his scenes. His Act One finale is fun but doesn’t have the weightiness that that spot calls for while, towards the end, there seems like there is a succession of climaxes. And a pantomimed sequence indicating that time is passing has the cliched feel of pages being torn from a calendar in a 1950s movie. Director Giraud, while keeping a generally fluid pace (despite some overlong scene changes), does not always serve his work well. For example, on more than one occasion he has secondary characters doing stuff on the sidelines that takes the focus off of where it should be. Too often musical vamps go on too long leaving the actors adrift on the stage. And while I’m all for color-blind casting, as was the exemplary case in SLT’s recent The Importance of Being Earnest, in such a new work as Widow Bride, it muddied the relationships a bit; I seemed to spend too much time trying to figure out who was related to whom. More importantly, while it is certainly within a Director’s prerogative to cast whomever he thinks is best for the role, for a woman like Maggie to make a choice to be part of an interracial couple in Slidell in 1991 reveals a part of her character that is never fully explored (and which would be different from, say, an interracial couple in New York or the French Quarter 20 years ago or even, perhaps, Slidell today). In the large cast, Meghan Rose Shea made a lovely Maggie but at times was too grounded to convey [continued on 12]

New Orleans Legend Alice Brady Passes

by The Rev. Bill Terry, Rector St. Anna’s Episcopal Church Email: fr.bill@stannanola.org

A

lice Lee Brady, 84, long time gay bar owner passed away February 25, 2012. She was surrounded by family and friends and held court right up to the end; she was having it no other way. Alice was a truly remarkable person, born July 31, 1927 in Birmingham, AL, weighing just over 2 pounds and first kept in a shoebox, she would become bigger than life to her friends. Alice arrived in New Orleans from her childhood home, Alexandria LA, by

trodding the boards ...from 10 Maggie’s frazzled life; though, to some extent, certainly the fault of the book, a more emotionally communicative Maggie might bring out more of her character. To some extent, this was also held true for Celia Guillory’s Gus but, in her case, such reticence seemed part of her character. Joshua W. Brewer, as Maggie’s son Aric, was adolescently sweet, surly and believable as a troubled teen who straightens himself out in a much more engaging performance than his one in Earnest. As his sister Missouri (where’d she get that name?), Tate Robertson had her own sugar’n’spice qualities but seemed to have inherited her singing ability from her “Dad”. Perhaps the stand-out in the cast was Katie Lynn Cotaya as the hairdresser Maya, Gus’s squeeze. The most polished of the performers combined with the most well-defined role let her bring sizzle to the stage whenever the spotlight was on her. Also quite talented was Kaitlin Griffin as Priscilla; I just wish she had more to do. In a small but vital role as Maggie’s Dad’s paramour, Teresa Wilson Augustine was adorably girlish but nicely

strong-willed. With her strong voice that lit up the finale, one wishes she too had a larger role. Mention must be made of Troy Hedrick as Mark. A member of the Saint Tammany Association for Retarded Citizens, he performed flawlessly and brought a wonderful bit of verisimilitude to the production. This is a noble bit of casting but one wishes his character was better integrated into the plot and/or given more to do. Otherwise, it can seem to be a somewhat unnecessary device albeit a most worthy one. Widow Bride is clearly a heartfelt, well-meaning work. If it sounds like I’ve been a bit harsh on it, so be it (my companion for the evening was more favorably inclined). At this stage in the musical’s development such criticism can only aid in enabling it to fulfill its potential. Nothing would be more wonderful than if Slidell Little Theater was to become an incubator of new musical theater works that went on to conquer the world!

he ashes have been spent, the weather is warm and perfect, and the seafood platters are selling like crazy all in the name of Lenten discipline. Things are being given up like desserts or smoking and the Irish and Italians are meeting in smoke filled rooms plotting the best parades ever. St. Joseph altars with a bounty of breads, guava beans, baked goods are being planned; the tarantella was danced just a week or so ago; and lots of paper flowers are being made by little ladies in “Metry” and “da Parish.” Cutter’s hosted the Easter Parade fundraiser and bonnets are being set, glitter accumulating, and divine drapes are being laid out for the Easter Parade. Yea, this is a time of austerity and reflection in New Orleans – right! We must suffer through stuffed crab, boiled crawfish, and the decision to get the large or extra large seafood platter. It’s in the air, new life, and especially right now outdoor doing … whatever that may be. Yea, it’s Lent in New Orleans. Lent in New Orleans is as much a cultural phenomena as it is a religious response. At least at St. Anna’s it is the time when the brass is polished while it is hidden away. It is a time to clean what has grown tarnished and soot ridden from a year of veneration, funerals, baptisms, and worship. It is the time that we worship in austerity with maybe a little less glitz. In that austerity at this time of year, every year, light pours through three small windows high above the altar. These rays of sunlight

Well, I’m all healed now and looking forward to seeing this all-male burlesque show that will be at the House of Blues for two shows on Saturday, March 17. Boylesk! features award-winning burlesque stars delivering pure prime beef, emphasizing the masculine side of the tease with their sizzling surprise reveals and tongue-in-cheek exploits. Also on the bill will be Hot Toddy (Best Boylesque–2009 Burlesque Hall of Fame), The Evil Hate Monkey (Best Boylesque–2010 Burlesque Hall of Fame), the magic of Nathan Kepner and Morgan TsuRaun, and Mistress of Ceremonies Cora Vette. dance on the earthen ware chalice and fair linen that drapes the altar as if staged for a film. Wooden candle holders speak of nature and earthiness with deep rich tones. It is a time to take a breath. We never seem to slow down in New Orleans. Or, maybe we are always on slow and the party never stops. Hard to tell isn’t it. Lent in New Orleans is different, but then again, what about New Orleans isn’t different? How about this! Take some time off during Lent, take time to simply watch, observe, and experience where you are in life, where in you live, and what you are doing. Once observed list your five favorite things about that life, where you live, those around you, and where you are. Then, list five things that disappoint you about your life, where you live, and those around you. Now you are doing Lent. That’s it get started. Once you have the lists do something about it…now it’s about time for Easter. During this time of observing and listing soak it all up: the good and the bad. Now you are doing Lent. Toward the end of Lent take your list, oh yes I mean really write these things down, and place them gently in a box – a simple or pretty box. Let them abide by themselves and give them no thought. Holy week begins with Palm Sunday, we do a Second Line on that morning and you are invited, and runs through until Easter Sunday which is April 8. I want you to take that box out during Holy Week and focus on it. Your best and worst are there. You are standing outside of your experience and looking at it. Make this YOUR Holy Week a time to be Holy and to become whole! Open the box, in a special place offer a prayer, maybe your home, maybe your bar, maybe on the levee. Light both lists and offer them up. . . Remember the things that disappoint you? Change them heal them reconcile them . . . they are only five things, only five, not the world not your entire life five things, relationships, places, or behaviors that disappoint. Change it first by naming it; then by offering it; then by acting on it. Remember those five things that are your favorite. Are they still? If so, hold them in your heart, embrace them cherish them, they are five things that are so much more than the five things disappoint because they will always be with you. You are now doing Lent… Then order the big platter because it has the stuffed shrimp and crab balls – no further comments needed.

obituaries ...from 12 the bus and go back where she came from; she was much too young to take on the city, but take on the city was just what she did. She began working in local French Quarter bars and learned the trade and the workings of the city. Alice was gutsy and determined and eventually opened her own bar in 1952, The Mascarade Bar at 819 St. Louis St. Her goal was to have a place where gay patrons could gather and have a good time. At that time one could be arrested for gathering in a known gay bar, but this did not detour Alice; her customers were going to be safe in her bar. Alice’s compassion and close watch on her customers led to her becoming a legend in the Gay Community. Following the Mascarade she opened Alice Brady’s at 514 Ursulines St. Her third location was Mr. D’s HideA-Way and finally Brady’s at 700 N. Rampart St. She sold Brady’s in the late 1970’s and retired to Metairie with her first New Orleans friend Torchy. She soon found that retirement was not for her and she bought into another local bar only to sell her interest and retire again. Several bar owners tried to get her to return to the business offering her numerous opportunities. She came out of retirement and began tending bar again on Rampart Street, spending her shifts telling stories of her life in New Orleans, and pouring many drinks. She could fill a bar when she was working because the old and the new wanted to hear her escapades. She eventually moved to the Friendly Bar on Chartres Street and continued drawing in crowds until standing for hours became an issue and in the early 1990’s she had to give up bartending. Alice spent her later years visiting with her friends who would stop by, talking on the phone and sending e-mails. When she did make the occasional appearance in public she could still stop traffic, everyone loved Alice. Alice’s long and vast life experiences could not be learned in school, they had to be lived, and live she did. Alice was always available to offer advice gathered from her life experiences and knowledge. She was perhaps best known as the proprietor of lesbian bars but her personality spilled over to include the male gay community and many in the straight community. She had a passion for music, if you liked a certain artist or a particular song and Alice knew it, you’d get a CD from her. During her years in the French Quarter she became friends with many of the great musicians and entertainers playing on Bourbon Street as well as musicians from around the world. She shared her vast collection of music with her friends and bar owners making tapes and eventually CD’s that played throughout the city. Although Alice never had children of her own, she raised hundreds. She

was a friend to many, whose lives were changed and served as an inspiration to members of the gay community who went on to become doctors, lawyers, nurses, businessmen and women. Alice would say that she was helped by many when she arrived in New Orleans and in turn she helped many throughout her lifetime. Alice put forth a gruff demeanor but once you peeled away this facade of the ‘tough broad” you found the real Alice the one with the heart of gold. Alice was an original contributor in the 1960s to the newly forming Gay Mardi Gras balls and in the 1970s she helped sponsor local gay softball teams, bowling leagues and the Kitty Kat Koctail Klub, giving our community events outside the bars to participate in and bringing gay women and men together. Alice was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Pickles Brady, her father

Wilson D. Brady, and her sister Maude Eddie Winn. She is survived by her loving nephew Raleigh Winn, his wife Lois, of Pineville LA, great nieces and nephews, and her “adopted” son Dennis Sickles of Galveston, TX, his partner Randy Elwood, her very special close and dear friend Yanett, and many loving friends from coast to coast. Special thanks to Raleigh and Lois for your devotion and late night computer fixes. Sam and Gloria, Pam and Ludie, Marty and Koo, and Jackie for your close watch over Alice the past several years, she appreciated you all very much. To Mary Faucheaux, in Alice’s words “You are an Angel,” and to Cindy you showed Alice that you are never too old to be a valuable and productive confidant. Above all, Alice’s life would not have been complete had she not been able to share 21 years of her life with her dog, Colette. Colette was the love of her life and her devoted companion

and friend. Alice received the Gay Appreciation Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 along with another legend, the late John Dodt, the highest honor given each year by its board of directors. A memorial service is scheduled at St. Anna’s Episcopal Church, 1313 Esplanade Avenue, at 2pm on March 24th, followed by a reception at The Friendly Bar, 2301 Chartres Street. Please join in the Celebration of Life to remember Alice Lee Brady. Alice, you will be missed by your family and loving friends all the days of our lives. The legend of Alice Brady will be there always to remind us about the Alice Brady we knew and loved. From the 1940’s to 2012, Alice was and is revered in the Gay and Straight Community here and afar, and she will continue to be revered. We truly have lost a legend.

Bartender of the Month

M

ardi Gras has come and gone but the city is still full of merrymakers. It is wonderful to see the crowds in the city year round, and you know what that means; the more people in the city, means more business for the bars. And the gay bars have been rockin’ lately. The men and women working behind the bars in the gay establishments deserve kudos for dealing with the record numbers. And no one personifies this industrious spirit then my bartender for the month of March. His bar may be the smallest area at Oz, but because of Chris Picou, the Ruby Slipper has become the hippest place to drink on the weekend. Once a storage area, the Ruby Slipper is now a fabulously decorated lounge on the second floor. It is a great escape from the beat of the dance floor, but one of the main reasons for this little niche’s success is Mr. Picou. Chris has many endearing features, but beyond his flawless physical attributes, this young man is a hard worker. Whether he is slinging drinks behind the bar or working as bar back, Chris makes customer satisfaction his number one priority. Blessed with an award winning smile and a very toned physique (yes I mean smoking hot body), it is no wonder why so many people pack into his little area of the bar. But besides all those qualities, Chris is an engaging bartender. He remembers his regulars and makes

newcomers feel right at home. Charm and charisma married with an outstanding work ethic make him an employer’s dream. His fun-loving persona and his sensual appeal, make him everyone else’s dream. Eye candy definitely goes a long way in business. His expertise at making shots is also noteworthy. He keeps the vibe in the Slipper energized and stimulating. It also helps that he plays the hottest videos on the television. So next time you make it to Oz on the weekend (he also works Monday nights downstairs), maneuver your way upstairs for a cocktail from Chris. You will find that the Ruby Slipper is definitely the hottest scene in the club. Oz is located at 800 Bourbon Street.

he Mystic Krewe of Satyricon is hosting a special performance for the opening of the highly acclaimed Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire. This fundraiser for the krewe will take place on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30pm at the Michalopoulos Studio on Elysian Fields. What is so thrilling about this performance is the talented cast which includes the super sexy Michael Aaron Santos, Aimee Hayes, Ashley Ricord and Mike Harkins. This play is part of Southern Rep’s season. Another special item of mention is the production’s location, which is on Elysian Fields where the story was set. Tickets are $25 and the Michalopoulas Gallery is located at 527 Elysian Fields. For more information or tickets, call 504.943.6910.

The French Quarter Wine Festival

T

Chris Picou

he French Quarter Wine Festival 2012 has kicked off with a fabulous opening reception on March 2, but the festivities continue through the closing reception on April 27 at Le Meritage restaurant in the Maison Dupuy hotel. Every Monday and Tuesday night, this award winning establishment hosts vintner dinners which pair their delicious cuisine with some of the best wineries. I have been not only to the opening and closing receptions, but to some of the dinners and I can attest that it truly has been the best dining experiences. Most of this is due to Executive Chef Michael Farrell who has taken the New Orleans culinary scene by storm. Recently receiving four beans and four star ratings by some of the top food critics in the city, Farrell has been fea-

tured in Playboy and Esquire magazines as well as a host of other local publications. I suggest checking out more of these dinners, but act fast, because most of them sell out quickly. For more information on the festival and to purchase tickets, go to www.frenchquarterwinefestival.com.

The interior’s sleek design will feature beautiful golden hardwood and hand-blown glass amber lamps throughout the restaurant. An attractive array of threedimensional art, ranging from largescale metal sculptures of mangroves and fishing scenes to a large mystical fish rubbing, will enhance the ambience felt throughout the restaurant. While reservations are not required, they are available on a limited basis by calling 504.780.9964. I love this restaurant so much that I thought you might want to know a little bit about the chain. Founded in 2000 in St. Petersburg, FL, the Bonefish Grill experience is the perfect recipe marrying simplicity, quality and consistency in food, service, ambiance and value. As the “Fresh Fish Experts,” Bonefish Grill specializes in market-fresh fish and other wood-grilled specialties. Knowledgeable and attentive Bonefish Grill Anglers (that is what they call their service staff, cute right) provide the

best in what they like to call “chef’s coat service.” Their Anglers pride themselves on guiding the guests’ journey through the innovative, seasonal menu and specials, which feature only the highest-quality, freshest ingredients, including traditional and unique varieties of fish and seafood as well as numerous non-seafood items. They combine this with a big-city bar that offers bar fresh cocktails and an affordable, interesting wine list. Party Down

M

ardi Gras may be over, but the party continues down here in New Orleans as springtime fills the air. The weather is beautiful and so are the boys. I did not have any down time after Mardi Gras. The Mystic Krewe of Satyricon, which I am captain, did the premiere of the hysterical play The Divine Sister at the Mid City Theatre on Thursday night right after Carnival to a packed house. It starred the lovely Varla Jean Merman and was directed by Ricky Graham. From the festive mood and the large crowd, it seems that everyone was not ready to stop their celebrating after the holiday. I had to work most of the weekend after Mardi Gras, but managed to have a day off on Sunday. And I experienced one of the most fabulous Sunday Fundays in a long time, thanks to a little help from my friends. I highly recommend those days when you can get together with a group of friends and just cut loose, have fun and enjoy each other’s company. My friends Kyle (aka Dusty Debris), Frankie Fierce, Jared and I did just that; beginning with a three hour brunch at The Country Club complete with bottomless mimosas and excellent food. Then we meandered into the Quarter for a few cocktails at the newly renovated Carousel Lounge in the Hotel Monteleone. They truly did an excellent job on the overhaul transforming this once small bar into a spacious and swanky lounge. After a few spins on the carousel and some more cocktails, we went drunk shopping on Royal Street. Jared and Frankie bought some great artwork and Dusty ended up with some lovely drag jewelry. But to commemorate the day, we [continued on 25]

under the gaydar ...from 22 all bought crazy hats which we promptly donned for the remainder of the day. Jared was a wolf, Frankie a bear, I was a dog and Dusty was a ram. I love drunk shopping, because half the fun is waking up the next day to see what ungodly item you purchased that you would never wear again at least until the next drunken binge. After our spending spree, we went to Oz for the Oscar viewing party. I am not sure if it was just me, but honestly, the Oscars this year kind of sucked. Or maybe it was the excessive amounts of vodka, but on second thought I was right they did suck. The next Thursday, the city was given a treat, the Harrah’s Corporation held a free concert in Woldenberg Park. What was so great about this event; was that Harrah’s identified four cities to host this large scale event, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and New Orleans; and they pulled out all the stops. Mary J. Blige and Gavin DeGraw played and the audience was treated to live feeds from the other cities. I was lucky enough to be invited to the VIP tented area with food and libations and a perfect view of the stage. The show opened up with Celine Dion greeting everyone from her theatre in Vegas. She performed two of her hit songs, then actress, author and Access Hollywood reporter Maria Menounos took the stage to introduce the acts. It was a star-studded night across the country and thank you to Harrah’s for including New Orleans in the festivities. The next day I began my weekend with the opening reception of the French Quarter Wine Festival at the Maison Dupuy. The weather was just gorgeous for this fete that includes over seventy five wineries, award winning cuisine and great entertainment. There were psychic readers, caricature artists, two bands, buffet table models and a host of other fun touches to keep guests enthralled. The wines this year were outstanding. The party may have been fun, but it was the after party with a DJ that kept me and my friends dancing to the wee hours of the morning. Even though the next day I was moving slow, it turned out to be quite the full evening. My friend Jared and I went from drag queens to debutantes in one night, not many people can say that. We began with the Easter Parade Sponsorship Party at Cutter’s. Congratulations to Darwin Reed and Rhonda Roget who brought in over five grand in sponsorships. After a few auctions and the usual amazing food at Cutter’s, Jared and I quick changed into suits and sped off to Gallier Hall for my employer’s daughter’s Sweet Sixteen bash. The theme was Saints and Sinners and it was truly over the top. As you can imagine we decorated the venue from floor to ceiling to make the event special. Then afterwards, a few drinks at Mike’s on the Avenue, dinner at Vega Tapas and then a nightcap at the Friendly Bar and my evening was complete. Sunday was a day of celebrating with two gay carnival krewes in the city. The Krewe of Petronius held their event at Michael’s By The Park and the Lords

of Leather was at the Phoenix. I attended both and congratulated them on jobs well done. Both krewes helped make this Mardi Gras one of the best, so I look forward to all the other rush parties. So even though Mardi Gras may be over, the fun continues, so time to go out shopping for some Easter duds, it is going to be a great Spring.

Tony’s Tidbits of Wisdom

F

amily has always been very important in my life, and I consider myself very fortunate to have been blessed with amazing parents. But family is truly what we make of the people in our lives. Good friends can be as close to you if not dearer than blood relatives. So it is always hard when we lose a loved one, or even worse yet, when we see someone we love go through that pain. Recently my dear friend Jeff Mallon (aka Elizabeth Bouvier) lost his father who unbeknownst to me was a huge deal in his hometown of Austin, Texas. All I know is that Jeff was very close to his family and he was going through this very difficult time. It wasn’t until he forwarded me a press release the university where his father coached, that I realized how wonderful this man truly was. He had a memorial service in a stadium. I know right, a friggin’ stadium. In life many of us can only hope to be cherished in such a way as Coach Jim Mallon. So I wanted to share this press release with everyone. And Jeff, I am so sorry for your loss; my prayers are with you and your family. Southwestern University mourns the passing of baseball coaching legend, Coach Jim Mallon. Mallon, 67, passed away following complications from heart surgery. Services for Coach Mallon were held on the campus of Southwestern University at Rockwell Field on March 3rd with a following reception in the Howry Center. Jim Mallon was one of the most successful coaches in Southwestern’s history during his tenure as Head Coach of the Pirate Men’s Baseball Team. Mallon earned a B.S. degree (1969) and a M.S. degree (1970) from Baylor University and then, after a five-year stint with the San Francisco Giants organization, Mallon began his collegiate coaching career in 1971 at Southwestern. At the time of his retirement in 2004 he had amassed a record of 1,197 wins against only 601 losses for a winning percentage of .666. Mallon

ended his coaching career ranked third all-time in wins for both the NCAA and the NAIA. His teams won multiple championships. 1984 was one of the high points of his career with his team finishing third at the NAIA World Series. After Southwestern’s transition to NCAA Division III, Mallon’s teams won five SCAC Championships and advanced to seven NCAA Regional Championships. He was named NAIA District Coach of the Year on five occasions and SCAC Coach of the Year four times. From 1994 to 1999 he had players earn NCAA Division III National Statistical Champion honors six times. Eighteen of Mallon’s players advanced to compete in professional baseball with four reaching the major league level. Twenty-four players earned All-America or Academic AllAmerica honors. Mallon was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Southwestern University Hall of Fame in 2010.

Coach Mallon is survived by his wife Jane, sons Jeff and Jarret, and other family members plus a multitude of friends throughout Texas. The family has requested that donations be made to Southwestern University, Box 770, Georgetown, TX 78627-0770, for The Coach Jim Mallon Endowed Fund and/or The Baseball Locker Room Campaign in his memory. Donations may also be made to The Blood & Tissue Center of Central Texas.
