Bartender of the Month
M
y bartender of the month has been a person I have known peripherally for a time through other friends and acquaintances; that is until now. And, I know everyone may consider my choice a little bias, so what, this young man deserves many accolades, not only as hospitality professional but someone making a difference in the gay community. I am speaking about none other than my co-Pride Grand Marshal for New Orleans Pride, Matthew Birkhoff. Not only is he a wonder behind the bar at the Bourbon Pub, but he is also the talent coordinator and emcee for many of their shows as well as working hard to promote the Pride festival in his newly appointed title.
Bartender of the Month Matthew Since our election as grand marshals for Gay Pride, I have had the chance to hang out with Matthew more and he is one of the most cordial and entertaining individuals. When he is behind the bar, he greets everyone with a welcoming smile, his friendly demeanor and a wicked sense of humor. He is always on stage and that works for him, making him very popular among the Pub’s patrons. But his talent does not end there, his shows especially his Friday night strip offs with Jasmine Essex are my new guilty pleasure. He knows how to work a crowd, which makes his area at the bar a favorite. But it takes more than just people skills to work at one of the busiest gay bars in the city. You need to be quick, efficient and have a good work code. Matthew possesses all those characteristics, and he is also adorable on top of that. Whether you see him behind the bar or catch one of his shows, make it a point to get to the Pub and say hello to your newly crowned New Orleans Gay Pride Grand Marshal Matthew Birkhoff. The Bourbon Pub is located at 801 Bourbon Street.
Pride Gets Greater! Tuna, That is.
G
reater Tuna starring Jeff Mallon (aka Elizabeth Bouvier) and D. Michael Stevens (2011 Voice of Pride) returns to The Shadowbox Theater on May 10 at 8pm. All proceeds from this event will be donated to
New Orleans Pride. There are only 75 tickets available so get your tickets now before they are all sold out. Greater Tuna is the hilarious comedy about Texas’ third smallest town, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The eclectic band of citizens that make up this town are portrayed by only two performers, making this satire on life in rural America even more delightful as they depict all of the inhabitants of Tuna — men, women, children and animals. The production began in the fall of 1981 in Austin, Texas and early tour dates found an instant audience coast to coast as the show played to packed houses in San Francisco, Atlanta, Houston and Hartford before original stars Joe Sears and Jaston Williams found themselves performing Greater Tuna for over a year OffBroadway at Circle in the Square Theatre starting in 1982. This successful New York run lead to an HBO Special produced by Norman Lear which took the “Tuna” phenomenon to every city in America. By 1985, Greater Tuna was the most produced play in the United States with schools, colleges, community and professional theatres all anxious to add the hit comedy to their repertoire. Meanwhile, Joe Sears and Jaston Williams were continuing their whirlwind tours in such prestigious theatres as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the Marines Memorial Theatre in San Francisco. Greater Tuna’s popularity crossed the Atlantic in 1988 as the highlight of Scotland’s famed Edinburgh Festival. Back at home, the Marines Memorial Theatre in San Francisco began a local production of Greater Tuna which ran continuously for a record-breaking seven years. The Shadowbox Theater is located at 2400 St. Claude Avenue. Tickets are $20 and are available on the New Orleans Pride website PrideNewOrleans.ORG or by contacting nolapride@gmail.com. Tickets MUST be purchased in advance.

Party Down
D
on’t you love festival season. So much to do, great weather and the parties are numerous. I began my week of events on Tuesday when I went with my friend Nick to a sailing party on the Natchez to watch the ships pull into New Orleans for Fleet Week. Talk about amazing, as we rode in the rainy weather alongside these majestic ships from all over the world. Talk about a once in a lifetime experience. Cocktails while we greeted the thousands of sailors as they came into the Crescent City. What a great way to spend a Tuesday afternoon.
And it was an adventure to get there, blocked roads, a train stalled on the tracks and a torrential downpour was not able to keep us away from possibly meeting the sailors of our dream. On Wednesday, I went to the sports bar Walk On’s for a hospitality industry party, which was a fun networking event. After, I made it to the French Quarter to Oz for their ever so amusing Wednesday drag show. This show is always entertaining and Tommy Elias does a great job of keeping it fresh and innovative each week. Thursday, I went to the opening of a great new sandwich shop/deli in the Bywater called Jims. Now talk about great food, they do not have the usual po-boys, but a wide variety of sandwich choices to please everyone. My favorite was their Cuban sandwich. The weekend was a mixture of different styles of events. Friday, I was all over the Quarter, beginning the night at JohnPaul’s for the Two Tons of Fun Variety show hosted by Monique Michaels and Nathan Martin. These ladies may be a tad on the husky side, but they knew how to charm a crowd. And Nathan’s “I Can Do That” routine from A Chorus Line was spot on perfection. Congratulations to his successful event. After JP’s, I cabbed into the Quarter to Oz for their Pink Party, where literally everything was Pretty in Pink from the décor to the cute upstairs boutique. There were plenty of Taa Taa shots to go around, which we imbibed copiously. Adding to the merriment was the fact that Fleet Week was here so the gay clubs were inundated with men (and women) in uniform ready to seriously party. One of my favorite bartenders at Oz, Adrian showed me the perfect way to share a shot, which is flawless and sexy as hell. At midnight, I trotted across the street to the Bourbon Pub for their Strip Off contest at midnight. A bunch of my friends met me out and more libations were consumed as I judged the contest along with Bradley Latham and Chris Leonard. Talk about an exciting way to cap off the night, hot half naked boys, illustrious friends and lots of shots. Cheers to that. On Saturday, the scene changed as I along with the ever engaging Elizabeth Bouvier emceed the Dodwell House Fundraiser for St. Anna’s Church. The bad weather held up and the evening was a triumph, bringing in lots of money for their cause, some $18,000. It was also the place to be seen, the Times Picayune covered the event, and special guests were Orleans Parish City Council President Jackie Clarkson and US District Attorney Jim Letten. That man could indict me anytime, talk about a good looking gentlemen. The silent and live auction was amazing. I have to admit, I got some incredible deals there as well as an early start on my holiday shopping. Sunday Funday was a relaxing day with friends. We started out with drinks at my house in the Marigny, then Beaux, Barrett, Channing and I went to champagne brunch at Cafe Nero, which if you have not tried yet, make it a point to dine there. It was flawless, you are able to bring your own bottles, so we enjoyed impressive food and conversation over two bottles of champagne. Then we walked into the French Quarter to explore and meet a Navy man or two. We went to Good Friends for their Sunday Sing A Long upstairs for a brief time and was mesmerized by Cha Cha’s impeccable signing voice.
His rendition of “Waste of Time” from Avenue Q was just moving. Then we went to Oz for Sunday Dingo, and capped the night off at Lafitte’s for Trash Disco. What a great way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The following week, I had many things on the agenda. On Tuesday, the Chicory held an open house to show off their property in the Warehouse District and their new menu items. The Chicory is a wonderful venue space connected to Ernst Cafe right on Tchoupitoulas that is perfect for any corporate parties or weddings. Their new menu was simply divine, and the staff was excellent, so you can be assured that they will take good care of you. I was invited to the 3rd anniversary of the Irvin Mayfield Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta the following day. Among all the tee shirt shops and other businesses, it is refreshing to see a music club become successful and thrive. Congratulations to Irvin and may he have many more happy years at the playhouse. After the party, I went and played with the boys at Oz and took in their Wednesday drag show. When Thursday came around, I had the Jazz Fest fever. I started that night off by attending an open house at the Hilton Garden Inn Convention Center to celebrate their new renovations with my friend Laura. The place looks spectacular from their remodeled sleeping rooms to the pool area and lobby; guests are in for a treat. They pulled out all the stops to show people a good time and the champagne/coconut vodka concoction they were serving was the perfect summer drink. After the Hilton Garden Inn, we went to the Hilton Riverside to the Jazz and Heritage Festival Opening Gala which in one word was awesome. As you would expect, the music was superior with headliners Big Sam’s Funky Nation and Trombone Shorty. The crowning moment is when Trombone was joined by Glen Andrews on stage. Everything about that night shined from the food to the silent auction. Not wanting to end such a great evening, Laura and I went afterwards to Oz for their Thursday night Strip-OFF and to dance more. Music was in the air the entire weekend, starting Friday when my friend Nick and I went to the closing reception for the Maison Dupuy Wine Festival then to the stunning St. Charles Avenue home of Fivetime Grammy Award Winner Terrence Blanchard. Now that is what I call a party with a guest list that consisted of musicians, celebrities and locals, the entire environment was one of harmony and enjoyment. Later that evening, I stopped in to JohnPaul’s to catch the tail end of Cathy Fox’s Trois Femmes show with special guest Amanda Shaw. I arrived just in time to take to the stage and auction off a raffle prize comprising two jazz fest tickets with a little help from some half naked men. All the proceeds from the auction and Amanda’s performance raised funds for New Orleans Pride, which raised over four hundred this evening. The remainder of the weekend was Jazz fest all the way. Two non-stop days of fun in the sun with music, food, lots of drinks and great friends. On Saturday, Frankie Fierce, Dusty Debris (aka Kyle) and DJ John Buckley spent the day of VIP tent hopping and enjoying all the festival has to offer. Amanda Shaw, Cee Lo Green

Mother’s Day
M
other’s Day is fascinating - some might think it a day established by Hallmark Cards or a candy company. But in fact it has deep roots in the USA. Our Mother’s Day is quite different than that celebrated in Europe which has roots in the Christian Church. Our Mother’s Day has roots in loss and war. The first attempts go back to the mid 19th century when Anna Jarvis, in 1868, attempted to establish “Mother’s Friendship Day” as a way of mourning the loss of sons of the Civil War both in the south and north. The day as we now know it came about with the death of Anna Jarvis and between John Wannamaker in collaboration with her daughter Anna Maria Jarvis of Philadelphia in 1905. By 1910, through the efforts of Mr. Wannamaker and Miss Jarvis the holiday had spread to major cities in the United States. On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day and requesting a proclamation. On May 9, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the first national Mother’s Day as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war. Mother’s are a metaphor for all that is nurturing and life giving. It is true that not all mothers have been nurturing; it is true that some mothers are harsh or negligent. It is sad and it is true. But somewhere in our hearts we KNOW what a mother is or should be. First, as an icon or paradigm they are life givers. They bring us into this world in what can only be described as a profound mystery set in motion by God. I say so because birth is more than the coming together of elements and the spewing forth a baby. It is life with purpose, potential, and the ability to love and nurture. It is beyond definition really. It is one of the few things that we naturally do that mimics God’s good work of creation. There was a single mother who had just immigrated to the United States from Germany in the early 1950’s and found herself in Gary, Indiana. After some misfortune she and her two children moved into the projects in Gary, and Mom had to go to work each day in order to support her family in this land of opportunity. Miss Mary a very large black woman would come and stay with the children. Lyn, the young daughter aged 3, had been tossed about by life and all that she needed was a safe place. She would curl up in Miss Mary’s lap
and snuggle her small head between Mary’s bosoms and there, right there, was her warm and safe place. She knew that she was safe, loved, and that she was cared for. Miss Mary was that part of motherhood that when we think of it a special warmth spreads all about us. We all need that feminine place that is warm, safe, and speaks to unqualified love. We all need to be nurtured and fed with the good stuff of motherhood. “A mother can give her child milk to suck, but our precious mother, Jesus, can feed us with himself. He does so most courteously and most tenderly, with the Blessed Sacrament, which is the precious food of true life. With all the sweet sacraments he sustains us most mercifully and graciously. That is what he meant in these blessed words, where he said, ‘I am that which holy Church preaches and teaches you,’ that is to say, ‘All the health and life of the sacraments, all the virtue and grace of my word, all the goodness that is ordained for you in holy Church, that I am.” St. Julian of Norwich, Divine Revelations For St. Julian, Jesus’ nurturing nature was so much as a mother is supposed to

movie so it was exciting for me. On the way out of the festival, Beaux, Barrett and I enjoyed all the house parties along the way. Tito’s Vodka had a great hospitality area serving complimentary beverages for our long trek back to the car. But our night did not end there; we were invited by the ever so delightful Albert Carey to his lovely Warehouse District condo for Sunday dinner and a viewing of the movie The Boys in the Band. I had never seen the movie before and it truly was ground breaking for its time, if not slightly dated now. Dinner was magnificent as always as was the company. Albert and Brent always know the right mixture of people to invite to make the evening memorable. Every time I attend one of their Sunday “dinters” as they call them, I enjoy meeting a new mix of friends and it gives a welcome reprieve from the bustle of the bar scene. That is my adventures for another week, summer is up ahead, make sure you get your new summer wardrobe in order because it looks like it is going to be a hot
and Tom Petty were among my favorites. Amanda’s new drinking song called “Red Cup” is my new anthem. I would like to specially thank the Sheraton, New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau and Miller for giving us passes to their tents as a welcome oasis from the crowds. The following day, I was joined by my friends Nick, Laura, Beaux, Barrett and Terrell for a repeat of the day before. Although, the masses were even more intense, we shopped at all the craft booths and I got some great art, we saw some performers at the small stages such as Gospel, Jazz and Lagniappe. But once again, we found ourselves back at the VIP tents enjoying a welcome environment. I have to say, the Miller tent is the bomb. My favorite of course on Sunday was The Boss, he still has it after all these years. The man is amazing. My celebrity festival sighting was at the Sheraton tent; Jonathan Silverman who starred in Weekend at Bernie’s was there. Okay, I loved that

Tony’s Tidbits of Wisdom
C
lass is now in session. Today’s gay lesson is how to out hustle a hustler. Now this city is full of hustlers, but recently I have found that gays in the city are having trouble identifying who is a hustler or not. Automatically they think that if a guy dances on a bar, he is a hustler. He could be, that is true, but the definition of a hustler is basically a petty thief, a prostitute or someone who aggressively advances their career or status (social climber). These types of people can be anyone: the boy next door, the investment banker (we have seen a lot of those lately), hell they can even drive a firetruck. A guy dancing on a bar is doing a job, he bumps and grinds and you tip. That does not actually follow the definition of hustler in my book. The problem isn’t these types of hustlers, but the ones that fly below the radar which are much more dangerous. So how do you play a hustler at their own game? First off, realizing that someone is a person of shady character is the first step. That is the hardest part, next is finding out what they want. Now that is the key of any hustler, you have something they want, money, power or popularity. Those are usually the biggest needs. The next fact you need to realize is that you actually have the power. You can control the situation and his (or her destiny) as well as your own. If they are dangling sex in front of you for whatever reason, power or money, then either call him to task or send
him packing. You need to work out your barter system on your own. But whatever it is you work out, get what you want first, do not wait in hopes they will put out. Trust me there are cute boys around every corner. I do not care how hot you think he is; he is easily replaceable. Especially if you are paying for it. If it is popularity they are thriving for (I can write a book about this type of person), letting them in your social network is dangerous. They can spread like a computer virus, infecting all your friends and causing a schism that runs deep. Those type of hustlers need to be weeded out immediately. They will usually show their true colors quickly because they do not have the social skills, so they play their hand way too early. These people kick to the curb without hesitation. Word of advice from someone who knows; never introduce a new person into your calling circle unless you have been friendly with them for at least six months. Trust me on this. Hustlers tend to pray on the lonely. I am telling you now, if you are lonely, get a damn dog. They are faithful, loyal and will not alienate all your friends. If you crave sex that bad, then buy it, get it on grindr (please anyone can get laid on there, it is like an electronic bathhouse), or stumble into one of those dark establishments known for that type of activity. But whatever you do, please do not let yourself get played. Class dismissed, now go out young Jedis and conquer the Darth Hustlers of the city. If you have an event, story or idea, you want covered, contact me at tonymgp@hotmail.com.

a community within communities ...from 22 be that Julian called him “our precious mother.” Motherhood is then, in its nature, not essentially sexually feminine; it is a state of being when it is fully expressed with tenderness. Yet, in all fairness, it is woman that best expresses creation in birth. We, as a community, must move beyond the bravado of maleness, gay-
ness, lesbianess, straightness, and all the rest and if we do not have acquire a mothering nature. We owe one another a safe place to snuggle up and find peace, safety, and tranquility – a place of unqualified love. If your mother is such a person, or approaches it, embrace her and thank her. This holiday about dead warriors and grieving mothers is also about what motherhood brings to the world’s table. Even if
your mother is not all-in-all, forgive her, and return to her what she gave to you; life and potential, and thank her for at least that. If your mother is gone wear a carnation the American symbol of Mother’s Day; remember that Jesus is both mother and brother – he is all-in-all and it is our place to become like him. On an aside: St. Anna’s and Dodwell House want to thank everyone who braved the elements to make the EXTRAVAGANZA a success raising $18,000. We want to thank within this community Rip and Marsha and Ambush for their sponsorship and support; thanks to owners of the The Friendly Bar and Big Daddy’s and to Friend’s Restaurant and other great members of the community. THANK YOU – NEXT YEAR APRIL 20TH DODWELL EXTRAVAGANZA III!
