a community within communities

by The Rev. Bill Terry, Rector St. Anna’s Episcopal Church Email: fr.bill@stannanola.org

How will we remember them? The shadows grow long, the air is crisp, even the old oaks are shedding some leaves. The small cottages become adorned with dried corn, cob webs anew, and images of the dark things of All Hallows Eve. Costumes are wrought, plans are made, and sensuality is in the air along side of waning daylight and coming darkness. The dark of our fair city is not a thing to hide from. Rather, it is a time and place where alter egos flourish and so many gather for libation, liberation, and fellowship. It is the season of dying, birthing, of the witch, and hearty ales and deep dish pies. For some, it is the start of a New Year, a new season. It is the announcement of Advent. The time of coming and anticipation and is adorned with deep purples or rich Marian blues. Four candles surround a Christ Candle, lights in the darkness telling of things to come. Advent wreaths, Advent Candles, Advent Calendars, are all harbingers of things to come. It is the time of All Saints Day and All Souls Day, of white washing tombs and remembering our loved ones as we would hope to someday be remembered. Over the past year, our lives have experienced great change. Perhaps this might be a time to reflect upon them. In these very columns we have visited the striking down of DOMA; we have equally talked about the striking down of the Voters Rights Act. We have visited peoples, who quietly give of themselves; who have shared their journeys; we have asked for community support because the funding landscape is changing but needs still exist. We have remembered the Upstairs Lounge Fire. Perhaps it is a time to reflect. Perhaps it is a time to take it all in and let it find a place in our lived experience, not forgotten information. Here is an invitation that may or may not be appropriate. Part of our living memory is the profound loss of friends and lovers over the years due to HIV/AIDS, or perhaps untreated illnesses, or perhaps even suicide, even murder. Instead of holding them in your

own memory only, perhaps naming them for prayers on November 2nd might just be a way for a community memory. If that is of interest send us the name, a memory of a loved one, and we will offer their name during our service that night – All Souls Day (11/ 2) – yes YOU are invited. It starts at 6:30pm and lasts about one hour. What would it look like for all of those that attended Marcy Marcell’s funeral to once again name that legend during this time of remembering – what would that look like? Or perhaps remembering Elwood Richardson, what would it look like how might it sound to hear their name in public in a traditional church that prays for extraordinary people? Malcome Poole, his name said large amongst so many others that we want to keep alive in hearts and mind. What would it look like? What would it sound like? How would it transform our community – no more fear. I have had the distinct pleasure of coming to know many in the “community” from Princesse Stephanie to Lauren, Sean, Don, Rip, Marsha, Rusty, Jose, Paul and many, many others. Some I know well and for some it is simply recognition and a quick kiss of friendship on the cheek. Universally there is a deep sense of spirituality. I have performed several memorial services on the second floor of the old JohnPaul’s now called Mag’s because the family just could not imagine being in a church (also it was very close to cocktails) following somber prayers. The refrain of a hymn says: "Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come follow me, and I will give you rest." The point here is that there is a place to mourn, a place to rejoice, and place to celebrate life that welcomes and is safe. What would it look like if the ‘community’ joined in this particular memorial? It would make a statement beyond the glitz, beyond the whit, beyond the hurt. It will say, I am here, my lover, my friend, my companion mattered. Neither Roman nor Protestant matters much here. It is about life and her cycles. You now have the invitation. No more love thy neighbor just not in my house; no more God wants us all just so long as you look and act like me; no more hypocrisy – no politics, no polemics, just prayer in a place where prayer is made valid by use. You have an invitation. Send me a name, a memory, life matters. All Saints November 1 at 6:30pm. The Litany of Saints and Victims of Violence. All Souls Day November 2 at 6:30pm. The Litany of our Dearly Beloved at St. Anna’s Episcopal Church, 1313 Esplanade Ave. If you are still afraid or just reticent to enter this house, send a name to: fr.bill@stannanola.org or by mail. All are welcomed none are shunned.

the Marigny Opera House (725 St. Ferdinand Street). The public is invited and encouraged to attend. The Mission of the LGBT Archive Project of Louisiana is to promote and encourage the preservation of materials that chronicle the culture and history of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender Community of Louisiana. The group’s purposes include: > Educating the community on the importance of ensuring that LGBT historical materials are archived and made available for future generations to access, research and study > Promoting the proper maintenance and preservation of historical LGBT materials > Providing an informational directory of archival resources where LGBT historical materials may be deposited or accessed for research and study > Indexing, publishing and maintaining a current list of locations of archived historical LGBT materials > Developing financial resources to assist in the preservation and availability of certain LGBT collections. The November 8th meeting is open to the public and will be both informational and invitational. The public will not only be informed of the project’s importance but also be invited to participate in the project. Opportunities for participation include volunteering to get involved with the group’s administration, volunteering to help the project achieve its purposes, learning about donating archival material, joining an informational mailing list, and donating money to the project among other things. Several exhibits of archival material will be on display at the meeting. For anyone interested in LGBT history, this meeting is not to be missed. The LGBT+ Archives Project of Louisiana is a new organization and this is an excellent opportunity to get involved with preserving our rich LGBT heritage.

OktoberFest You know it's Fall when you're off to your first OktoberFest celebration. This particular Saturday night kicked off at Cutter's, one of the most popular neighborhood bars in the Marigny. No OktoberFest would be complete without Jimmy's famous homemade brats, kraut and German black bread made with molasses. Rip's sister Cathy and friend Terri joined us for the feast. We all enjoyed Jimmy's culinary efforts, delish as usual! Got to chat with bar barons Mac, Dudley and Jimmy, as well as Orlando and Joe, and Lea with daughter Aliska. Really was nice to just relax and enjoy the company of those we were with. Bartender Jim Doyle served us some mean cocktails. And on our way out to our next stop, was surprised at the door when Jimmy and Dudley gave us a whole loaf of that fantastic German black bread. Thanks so very much! Our next stop brought us to a recreated German beer garden as we popped in for the Krewe of Armeinius' CocktoberFest at Carl Mack Presents. We were greeted at the door by Queen Armeinius Freddy Guess as a real man, oh my! Then King Armeinius Fred Arocho served us our first cocktails. There were several lovely "fräuleins" flitting around the room with pitchers of beer to refill mugs and cups. At this point we saw Elizabeth, as in Elizabeth Bouvier, motioning for us to come over to her private couch for seats as all of the tables were jammed full. We were not only greeted by Elizabeth, but the new Mr. Louisiana Leather Lance Baggett. Off to take a few pics and ran into both Queen Petronius Larry Anderson, and Armeinius Captain Blanche Debris as Kevin. After a little chit chat, there was some commotion coming from the stage when non other than Lola aka Antoinette Chardonnay (Satyricon Captain Tony Leggio) tumbled off the stage to begin her rendition of a drunken fräulein which was hilarious, while raising dollars for the krewe. Couldn't really understand what the emcee couple were actually saying, but when there glasses went up, we knew it was time to guzzle! Really, really, a lot of fun. After a quick drink at The Friendly Bar, we were off to the land of Oz, a must stop, anytime sister Cathy is in town. We arrived just in time snagging the last free bar stools in the house as the beefy dancers hit the bar top. The crowd apparently had been celebrating even more than we had, since they appeared to be quite full exhibiting their animal instincts. Don't know if the intoxication was coming from the cocktails or the HOT, HOT music by DJ of the Year JRB! Didn't know which way to look? Beefy boys on the bar, or the ones on Oz's all new dance floor. There were plenty to go around! But alas, our cocktails were catching up with us, so a few steps down Bourbon brought us home safe and sound.

fully and in many cases becomes part of the entertainment. Besides that, he possesses great cocktailing skills. He knows his clientele and greets them warmly when they come in, remembers patrons usual drink orders, but most of all is quick behind the bar. Scott is also all man; I mean seriously he exudes animal magnetism. His smile,

demeanor, and the way he carries himself all add to his sex appeal. So the trick is to go see Scott and enjoy a delicious beverage as a treat. Michael’s on the Park is located at 834 North Rampart. Happy Halloween.

Bartender of the Month I love the month of October for many reasons. My favorite holiday Halloween is in this month, as does my birthday month long celebration and fall weather starts creeping its way into our lives. I decided to pick a bartender who personifies this month. He has a wicked sense of humor and a devilish grin. He is none other than Scott who bartends at Michael’s on the Park. Scott is a ball of energy with a personality to match. He is playful, flirtatious and has a great time doing his job. To love your job is one of the best gifts anyone can get in this life, and you can tell he loves being a b a r t e n d e r. moments in gay new orleans history by Frank Perez E-mail: f.perez@sbcglobal.net

“Mike Moreau Makes History” October is LGBT History month and all across the nation, community groups, political organizations, liberal churches, major universities, and even some high schools will acknowledge the milestones of our collective queer history. Observances and ceremonies this month will commemorate all the major events that constitute our community’s narrative: the Stonewall Inn riot (1969), the first march on Washington for LGBT rights (1979), the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and the fight for marriage equality and so forth. And as important as it is to remember those major events that have propelled our movement forward, it’s easy to forget that the movement is really about individual people—not just the Harvey Milks and the Jeanne Manfords, but also ordinary, unsung people. And so in honor of LGBT History month, this column is dedicated to a local individual who has made a difference in our local LGBT community. Meet Mike Moreau. You might know him better as Opal Masters.

Book of the Month Keeping in the spirit of the holiday, I thought my book of the month for October should be something downright spooky. I chose Stephen King’s novel Joyland which is part coming of age drama, part ghost story mixed with an old fashioned murder mystery. There is nothing spookier than a Carnival and what can be scarier than a brutal murder in the funhouse. King, known for famous horror classics like Carrie and The Shining, weaves a touching tale mixed with colorful characters and a compelling storyline in this outing. The premise is college student Devin Jones fresh off a breakup takes a summer job at a Carnival in a beach community. He along with two friends discover that there is more to Joyland than meets the eye. It is not soon after starting work at Joyland, that Devin learns about the ghost of a young girl who was murdered that haunts the funhouse. Intrigued by this, he soon starts playing amateur detective with his friends, and before they know, they come face to face with a deadly evil that threatens their lives. This book is more than a ghost story, it paints a portrait of small town America and growing up, facing the harshness of life and alas growing older. What I enjoyed most about this novel is King’s characters. You can relate to them and his description of behind the scenes carny life is riveting. King has once again given the reader a wonderful journey that will have you looking over your shoulders if you dare read this alone. For more information on Joyland and other King novels, go to www.stephenking.com. Are You Ready To Get Sick Be prepared New Orleans because The Kinsey Sicks are coming to town in

Queen Amon-Ra XLIII 2008

King Cake Queen of Gay Mardi Gras XVII in 2010

Mike grew up in Opelousas, Louisiana, a small community just north of Lafayette in the heart of Cajun country. After briefly studying Business Administration at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (then known as U.S.L.), Mike moved to New Orleans in 1963. A good friend of his from Gretna had told him, “Being gay, you need to move to a big town. You’ll never find what you need or want here.” After stints as an accountant for two local companies, Mike worked for the Hibernia Bank as a collection clerk before becoming a credit manager for the Bank of New Orleans. In 1978, Mike started his own business, “Originals by Mr. Mike,” which designs and makes Mardi Gras costumes. Over the years, Mike has created thousands of costumes for a number of (mostly out of town) carnival krewes, including Diana, Gemini, Slidellians, and Troy—a Slidell krewe he founded in 1983. In addition to these contributions to the history of Carnival, Mike has also played a major role in the New Orleans gay krewe Amon-Ra, which was established in 1965. Mike joined Amon-Ra at its first meeting and has been active in the organization ever since. In 1970, Mike served as Captain of the krewe’s ball, a position he would hold with distinction five more times over the decades. He also served as Queen of Amon-Ra in 1975 and 2008 as well as King of Amon-Ra in 1980. Mike would go on to become King Cake Queen of Gay Mardi Gras in 2010 reigning over the Krewe of Queenateenas. As devoted as Mike is to Carnival, he is perhaps even more devoted to his longtime life-partner, Darwin Reed. Mike and Darwin met in 1975 at Travis’, a gay bar on North Rampart where Michael’s on the Park now is. Upon first seeing Darwin, Mike remembers, “I saw him in the bar and chased him around until he asked me to

dance.” The two became friends for a few months until one night they decided to consummate their relationship. As they arrived at Mike’s home, Mike told Darwin, “This is a one night thing. I’m not looking for anything permanent.” Not long thereafter, the two moved in together and have shared each other’s lives ever since. Both Mike and Darwin have a love of horses and eventually the couple moved to Covington to tend to their three American Saddlebred showing horses Horses, Darwin, and Carnival notwithstanding, Mike also loves performing in drag. Meet Opal Masters. Mike’s interest in drag manifested at an early age. As a child, he would raid his sister’s closet each Halloween and costume as a girl. When he began to perform as an adult, Mike’s friend, Corky Irwin, gave him the name Opal Masters. In the 1990s, Opal began doing drag shows around the state, mostly in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Alexandria because the pay was so much better than in New Orleans. In reminiscing about his life, Mike exudes a sense of contentment and gratitude, especially for the friendships he’s developed over the years. In our interview some names came up repeatedly: Mike Durocher, Ramona Le Ger, Patti Leplaesafe, Nicole Dubois, Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain among several others. Of these friendships, Mike observes, “We formed everlasting friendships—some for over fifty years.” Now 70ish, Mike Moreau can look back on a life already well lived (and with many years ahead of him) and say he has lived through one of the most exciting times in LGBT history. But more than that, he can also lay claim to helping create part of that history. As we celebrate gay history month, let us honor, not just Mike Moreau, but all gay folk of a certain age who paved the way for the freedoms we now enjoy.

praise from both Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan - the only thing they agreed on that year. A Kinsey Sicks performance was even used as the Season 3 trailer. However, once show producers caught wind of the Kinseys’ brand of politics, flavor of humor, and personal hygiene, THE KINSEY SICKS were cheerfully shown the door, and the performance footage was left on the cutting room floor. “AMERICA’S NEXT TOP BACHELOR HOUSEWIFE CELEBRITY HOARDER MAKEOVER STAR GONE WILD!” brings the group’s firsthand knowledge of the reality show experience to bear, poking fun at the genre’s blatant manipulation of contestants and audience alike - but, of course, all in effortless 4-part harmony! Party Down I love the fall and since October is pretty much the start of the holiday season my calendar fills up fast. So my two weeks were filled with celebration, costuming and just a little decadent behavior. On Monday, I had dinner at Mandina’s with a friend I met over the weekend. God, I love tourists, they are the perfect weekend boyfriends, they are in for some fun and frivolity, and then they are gone before you start to get tired of them. Mandina’s is still one of the best restaurants for local flavor and in my opinion a great locals’ hangout for Monday night football. The food was excellent and so was the company. After the meal, we caught the tail end of the game at Mags 940 and because of the win; I had two happy endings that night. On Wednesday, City Park hosted a special thank you reception for those who helped with Lark in the Park this year. The chairs and committee raised over $150,000 this year, very impressive. The party was by the carousel and guests were treated to rides on this historical wooden structure that has stood the test of time. My weekend began with a fundraiser at the Ursuline Convent for the opening of the Archbishop Hanna exhibit. The life of this extraordinary man is chronicled in this historic exhibit and the venue is perfect. The evening was just gorgeous, a soiree under the stars illuminated in blue lights with good food, flowing drinks and a magnificent setting. The convent has to be one of my favorite places to hold an event. I went with my friend Beaux and afterwards we journeyed uptown to the opening party of the Hookah House Café on Magazine Street. I am not a hookah connoisseur by any means, but this place was lovely. I got to try some berry and minty flavored ones. What is so cool is you smoke though either an apple or a grapefruit, never did that before. The following night was Art For Arts Sake and my friends and I hit the galleries on Magazine Street. This is the best art party in the city and the weather was delightful. There is something about strolling on this historic street, sipping cocktails, enjoying art and shopping at the stores. Later that night, Beaux, Barrett and I broke off from the others and went to Blake Bascle’s 50th birthday party at his house on Broadway. I love milestone birthdays especially when they are of very dear people. Blake was roasted by some of his best friends and the entire evening was in tribute to this lovely (and very sexy) man. Happy birthday my friend. On Sunday, I caught Opal Masters’ Jewel Box Revue at Michael's on the Park. As always, Opal and her cast know how to please a crowd. She truly is a legend in the drag world and the city is lucky to have entertainers like her performing, she is a true showman. The next week started my birthday week of celebration. I began on Monday by attending the first NOCCA Broadway series with Jane Krawkowski from 30 Rock and Ally McBeal. She is also a Tony award winner who is an excellent singer. My mom

under the gaydar ...from 31 and I attended this two hour show which was absolutely fascinating. Jane is personable, talented and funny. The time flew by as she kept the entire audience engaged. Afterwards we went for a late dinner at Booty’s in the Bywater. I love going to “hipster” places with my mom, I think it keeps both of us young at heart. Even on a Monday, this eclectic eatery was crowded. The food was good and so were their specialty cocktails. On Wednesday, Beaux and I went to two parties. The first was a book signing hosted by Festigals celebrating the New York published author Melanie Young, “Getting Things Off My Chest: A Survivor’s Guide To Staying Fearless and Fabulous in the Face of Breast Cancer.” This fabulous event in honor of breast cancer awareness month was a huge success and very well attended with specialty cocktails and some very cute Festi "guys". After, we went to City Park for Gambit’s Reds, Whites and Blues, a wine, spirits, food and music event benefitting the Foundation for Entertainment, Development and Education (FEDE). We sampled over 200 wine selections while sampling gourmet small plates and enjoying live music. Later that night, we stopped at Michael’s on the Park for the American Horror Story Coven premiere. They had

Boots Bartender Troy Parker joins customers on the other side of the bar on his day off a fun group and I have to say Jessica Lange gives a new meaning to the word Bitchcraft. Love the line, “don’t make me drop a house on you.” It also made me giddy to see all the New Orleans legends on the show like Madame LaLaurie played by Kathy Bates and Marie Laveau played by Angela Bassett. Thursday, the Roosevelt had the opening party for their new Fountain Lounge. This grand hotel is bringing the elegance of the old restaurant back once again as guests enjoyed music, food and lots of champagne. Friday was National Coming Out Day and my birthday, I know right, two of the gayest things on the same day. I celebrated in flair with a private soiree on the second floor of Chartres House. The food was spectacular and I had a great night in the company of many friends and family. I would like to thank Valerie, Laura, my mom, Beaux and Barrett for helping make it a huge success. Afterwards, the boys and I decided to play in the Quarter visiting several of the bars. My favorite drunken moment of the night was doing dick shots with Persana Shoulders. Now that is classy. On Saturday, I got my German on by attending Armeinius’ CocktoberFest at Carl Mack Presents Studio. This German throw down was a rollicking good time with German cuisine, a great show hosted by Barrett

I do not want to toot my own horn, but I won the sausage eating contest, no one can deep throat like I can, take that Lady Facile. Congratulations to the krewe on great event and I heard that this new Lola performer is taking the city by storm.

Later that night, I went to the Friendly Bar where I met some lovely men in town for the New Orleans Film Festival. They do documentaries, so ultimately no one sees their work. I am just kidding, we ended up bonding and I followed them to a party at the Art Klub on Elysian Fields for a late night costumed fete for Endless Gaycation, which was a four day queer/trans festival going on that weekend. Who knew? It was fun and

I even got to walk the catwalk. The event was their Peacock party, how appropriate. So after numerous more cocktails, I went home and called it a night. Sunday, I had Beaux, Barrett, Scott and his boyfriend John over for drinks and then we went to drunch, which is my pet name for drunk brunch. We went to Booty’s and enjoyed their bottomless daiquiris and the food was once again delectable. After an entire afternoon of many libations, I went home and laid it down missing the tail end of the Saints game which is kind of okay since we lost. Well, that concludes my two weeks, get prepared because Halloween is upon us and I feel that something wicked this way comes.

Halloween XXX Recap Do not forget to attend Halloween XXX this year as it celebrates a noteworthy anniversary. Halloween New Orleans is presenting Halloween 30, a four day celebration that benefits Lazarus House, October 24 - 27. The events are as follows. Halloween’s in New Orleans begins with the The Lazarus Ball to kick-off the weekend for Halloween 30 at the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center located at the WW2 Museum. This year’s event will feature live entertainment, great food, and their incredible silent auction. The auction is an important part of our yearly fundraising, and it is probably one of the best auctions at a fundraiser. This event is from 7:30pm to 11pm. Each night has a theme and this evening’s is “The Wedding Shower.” Dress is fancy cocktail attire. The following night is where you say good-bye to the single life at The Largest Gay Bachelor Party. Your wildest fantasies will come true as you dance all night to the tracks of Dallas’ breakout DJ Brandon Moses. The historic Civic Theatre where the very first Halloween New Orleans was held 30 years ago will be turned into the hottest dance club complete with drinks, sexy male dancers, and even a “Champagne Room.” As with any good southern bachelor party, they will have lots of booze and the boy, and hopefully you won’t miss the wedding. Remember this night is all about the last fling before the ring. This event is from 9pm – 3am. My favorite evening is Saturday as guests make their way down the aisle into the Chapel of Love and be greeted by our “minister”, comedian Shawn Pelofsky. With DOMA defeated, there are many ways you can have some

Blueberry Hill at Northshore Harbor Center, Slidell through Oct. 27 Blueberry Hill, a self-proclaimed “jukebox musical” that recently played at JPAS’ Teatro Wego on the West Bank, uses classic New Orleans R&B songs from the 1950s and ’60s to tell a simple story of new love requited and old love rekindled. Yet by acknowledging the knotty racial realities of yesteryear, it admirably has more on its mind than most such musicals. A winning cast makes Blueberry Hill’s well-paced two hours go by smoothly. Featuring such evergreens as Chapel of Love, It’s Raining, Ain’t That a Shame, and Mother-in-Law, it is thoroughly enjoyable on its own, extremely likable terms. So if you’re a fan of such classic songs and want to get away from the Halloween madness that will descend on New Orleans this coming weekend, then read no further and just head to Slidell to catch one of Blueberry Hill’s final scheduled performances. As a critic, however, I wouldn’t be doing this new-musical-with-old-songs any favors by ending my review here. Blueberry Hill has lots of potential but needs work if it’s to be the smash hit it could become. Let’s first acknowledge how difficult it is to create something like this, even when using certifiably wonderful songs. As one wag once quipped, “If Hitler is alive, I hope he’s out of town with a musical.” (Actually, the original quote was a little different, but you get the point.) As writer, director and star, Butch Caire has taken on at least one role too many. He’s a talented, Ambie Award-winning director (for Miss Saigon), but by casting himself in a principal part, Caire deprives himself of the necessary perspective to see the overall show. Too often, Blueberry Hill has a visual slackness, particularly during songs’ vamps, with characters merely strolling around the stage. Choreographer Griffin Collins, another Ambie winner, has fun recreating dance movements from the era but seems constricted by the small space. Likewise, in such a situation as this, Writer Caire needs a more objective eye and ear for his script than Director Caire seems willing to be. Blueberry Hill makes

no claim to be Shakespeare; still, though well-meaning and intelligent, at times its book is simply confusing, and one can see certain plot points from miles away. A pleasing continuity exists between the dialog and the lyrics, yet some songs seem pulled in by the scruff of their necks. And Blueberry Hill would benefit if sharper dialog replaced passages that are cliched or repetitious. Despite this, Peter Elliott and Jessica Mixon bring youthful innocence and earnest charm to the college-age lovers. Sabrina Mixon balances sassiness and circumspection as Caire’s once and possibly future inamorata. In supporting roles that could use some fleshing out, Donald Lewis, Jr. provides cheeky humor and proves to be a fine singer with a mellifluous voice; Ashley Rose Butler, a triple threat singer/actress/dancer, adds lovely grace notes whenever she’s on stage; and Whitney Mixon never overplays her infatuation with Elliott’s character but displays it appropriately throughout the show. Caire would be wise, though, to cast someone other than himself as the proprietor of The Blueberry Bar & Grill, Cosimo (a reference to Cosimo Matassa, I suppose, that’s more distracting than apt). Caire is an innately likable fellow who has shined as put-upon husbands and fathers in Hairspray and Plaza Suite. This Cosimo, however, requires some rougher edges and greater emotional depth than Caire is able to provide; if Dane Rhodes is available, offer him a contract pronto. Blueberry Hill needs some tough love. But none of its shortcomings are insurmountable, and it might yet achieve the broad, nationwide appeal that its glorious score already has. I hope it does.

fun with this theme! The event will be at Mardi Gras World with the amazing DJ ABEL (NY). Doors open at 10pm and the party rages to 4am. The costume contest starts at 11pm with celebrity judges Chet Pourciau, Chris Rice, Bryan Batt and Tom Cianfichi. The midnight performance will be The 30th Anniversary Show commemorating its past 29 years of stage performances with a cast of hundreds. On Sunday, we wind down with the Honeymoon or “Breakup” depending on how you look at it with a Gospel Jazz Brunch at the House of Blues from 1 – 4pm. There will be a New Orleans-style, all-you-caneat cuisine (including fried chicken!!) The party is over so you can EAT! The entertainment this afternoon will be Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes, Well-Strung and St Peter Claver Gospel Choir.

Tony’s Tidbits of Wisdom My tidbit for the month of October is short and simple, never go on Facebook drunk. Trust me you will be the better for it. Facebook is worse than drunk dialing, then only one person knows your foolishness, drunk Facebook opens you up for all your friends to see your lack of poor judgment. As your friends, we already know you make poor decisions; you do not need to give us examples in black and white. If you have an event, story or idea, you want covered, contact me at ledgemgp@gmail.com.

Well-Strung: The Singing String Quartet at Café Istanbul on October 29 If you haven’t yet heard of Well-Strung: The Singing String Quartet, get ready because the four handsome young men who comprise it shall soon be arriving in New Orleans for a variety of performances culminating with their local public debut at Café Istanbul. The concept behind Well-Strung is such a great idea that one wonders what took so long for somebody to come up with it. Take four cute, talented musician/singers (Edmund Bagnell (first violin), Christopher Marchant (second violin), Trevor Wadleigh (viola), and Daniel Shevlin (cello)) and have them do selections from the classical repertory as well as pop hits arranged for a string quartet. I saw Well-Strung about a year ago in New York. In addition to works by Mozart (Eine kleine Nachtmusik), Bach, Vivaldi (Summer from The Four Seasons), Dvorák (The “American” Quartet) and a tango by Gardel, the foursome offered Adele’s Rolling in the Deep, Whitney’s I Will Always Love You, and Edge of Glory by Lady Gaga as well as songs made famous by Ke$ha, Pink, Rihanna and Bruno Mars. I especially liked Britney Spears’ Toxic which was almost unrecognizable at first. In between numbers, the boyz tell stories of growing up, coming out, how they got involved with music, etc. If the Well-Strung Quartet breaks no new interpretive grounds on the classical pieces, theirs is still a brilliant concept, extremely well-done.

Well-Strung's Chris Marchant at Cafe Istanbul Oct. 29 Credit for the group’s success must be given to David Levinson who, along with Shevlin, did the excellent arrangements of the pop numbers as well as Director Donna Drake, a member of the original cast of A Chorus Line, who kept things moving along and set the proper “dressy casual” tone. As fine as the show is, however, I did feel that, after a while, a certain sameness set in, perhaps because of the concept of using mostly current hits or because of the dynamic, but similar-sounding arrangements; a Beatles tune, say, would have been a nice change of pace. For the upcoming NOLA engagements this may not be an issue as I’ve been told to expect new songs and dialogue co-written

by Drake and Producer Mark Cortale with additional material by Jeff “Varla Jean” Roberson. So get ready for some delicious fun if you’ll be going to the Halloween in New Orleans’ brunch at the House of Blues on October 27, or if you’re planning to attend the New Orleans Opera benefit at the Bourbon Orleans on the 28th. And should you be trick-or-treating those nights, you’ll be able to catch Well-Strung at Café Istanbul on October 29. Talk about a treat.

Spirit of America at the WWII Museum’s Stage Door Canteen Another treat’s to be had Wednesday afternoons at the World War II Museum’s Stage Door Canteen where The Victory Belles, three of the loveliest young ladies in town, celebrate the Great American Songbook as well as folk, bluegrass and patriotic classics. For Spirit of America, the Belles’ newest revue, Writer/Director Victoria Reed offers a potpourri with something for everyone’s tastes. Sure, there’re famous songs and salutes to the branches of the military, but Reed wisely includes Songbook numbers that are less well-known as well as a medley of Patti Page chart toppers, a nice tribute to the songstress who passed away at the beginning of this year. Sure, the baseball-themed segment features The Star Spangled Banner and Take me out to the Ballgame, but there’s also Joltin Joe and Love on a Greyhound Bus. And in the most unexpected and pleasant surprise of the program, we get the Hoedown section from Aaron Copland’s Rodeo in which the Belles (Courtney Boe, Cristina Perez, Mandi Ridgdell) prove to be adept ballerinas in addition to the divine chanteuses we’ve come to expect them to be. Their version of Shenandoah is especially lovely to listen to. Whether in stylish Vivien of Holloway outfits, Judy Claverie’s cute baseball uniforms or her gingham prairie-inspired dresses, Boe (sweet’n’sassy), Perez (sultry) and Ridgdell (wholesome with a twinkle) provide gorgeous harmonies, knowing just how to put over each of their numbers. Coming down into the audience during the Songbook medley, ingeniously strung together from viewers’ requests, the Belles charmingly interact with audience members, getting older gentlemen, some of them WWII Vets, to dance with them. The guys clearly relish their few moments in the spotlight with these beautiful gals (although one gent could be heard to exclaim jokingly afterwards “Made it!” as though he’d been on the Bataan Death March). My one cavil is that there’s a certain slickness to the Belles’ presentation, a kind of throwback to 1950’s TV variety specials, an almost too-nice quality that emanates from them, which might have once come off as sincere but now, in these more cynical times, can seem slightly less than genuine through no fault of the performers themselves. In any case, Reed moves things along quickly, never overstaying a segment’s welcome. The spirited choreography by Ford Haeuser, Rick Kerby and Reed as well as Alex Quinby’s buoyant lighting all add to Spirit of America’s success.

#1 If By Space, and #2 If By Sea Borrowing from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Paul Revere’s Ride,” we have the top two movies on the second weekend in October, 2013. Gravity remains #1, a second weekend in a row, with a total box office of nearly $197 million. Captain Phillips takes second place with an opening weekend box office of $26 million. Both are action thrillers, just on two different frontiers. Gravity opened the Venice International Film Festival in August 2013 and the Telluride Film Festival three days later. It went into wide release on October 4. It was directed by Alfonso Cuaron, produced by Alfonso Cuaron and David Heyman, written by Alfonso Cuaron and Jonas Cuaron, and edited by Alfonso Cuaron and Mark Sanger. Yes, Alfonso Cuaron was involved from the beginning until the end of this movie. It’s

from Esperanto Filmoj and Heyday Films, distributed by Warner Bros Pictures. Gravity had a budget of $100 million. It runs 90 minutes and was released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D. I saw it in 3D and it was amazing... see it on the biggest screen you can get to, IMAX if possible. The cinematography, by Emmanuel Lebezki, and the special effects are breathtaking... it is a big movie, don’t wait to buy or rent this one. It was filmed on Arri Alexas, a new digital motion picture camera. Academy Award Winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star, with Ed Harris as the voice of Mission Control. Harris starred in Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff, a nice touch in casting. Bullock is Dr. Ryan Stone, on her 1st shuttle mission... Clooney is veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski, on his last mission.

There is a bit of a back story, but Gravity is all about of Stone and Kowalski, tethered together, dodging space debris, cut off from earth, running out of time and oxygen. We watch them float, tumble and cling to each other for life. I’m not a science fiction fan and Gravity kept me on the edge of my seat. It is well worth seeing... visually it is awesome, detailed yet enormous... and at 90 minutes, it’s over before you know it. Captain Phillips is part thriller and part biopic. It is the story of Captain Richard Phillips, captain of the container ship Maersk Alabama. The Maersk is hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. Captain

Phillips is the story of the hijacking and the rescue. Captain Phillips is based on the book “A Captains Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at SEA” (2010), by Richard Phillips and Stephan Talty. It was directed by Paul Greengrass, produced by Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti, Scott Rudin, and Kevin Spacey. The screenplay was written by Billy Ray, the cinematographer was Barry Ackroyd. It’s from Michael De Luca Productions, Scott Rudin Productions, and Trigger Street Productions, distributed by Columbia Pictures. It was released on October 11, had a $55 million budget and runs 134 minutes. Captain Phillips stars Tom Hanks as Captain Richard Phillips and features Barkhad Abdi as Abduwal Abdukhadir Muse, the Somali hijacker leader. In spite of his attempt at a New England accent, Captain Phillips is a showcase for Tom Hanks and his acting ability and he gives a great performance. There is tension but Captain Phillips is not a likable person and you never quite know how your supposed to feel about the Somali pirates.... and why no gun power on board? A bit confusing... According to those who would know, there are inaccuracies in both movies. Scientist say there are some technical issues with Gravity... minor, but with a $100 million budget??? And some say Captain Phillips was responsible for the entire hijacking incident... that he had no concern for the safety of the crew, ignored warnings and set a course through the pirate-patrolled waters to shorten the trip and save money... some say he had a death wish. The Waterman Steamship Corporation and the Maersk Line are being sued for $50 million. Maybe there will be a sequel. This is the time of the year when just about every movie released comes with Oscar buzz. Along with a lot of technical nominations for Gravity, Sandra Bullock should get a nod for Best Actress... she owns the movie. Tom Hanks will get a Best Actor nomination for Captain Phillips... it’s his best work in years. Barkhad Abdi might snag a Best Supporting Actor nomination... but I’m just guessing. Both of these movies are great, fine acting, great scripts... action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. If I had to choose, I would say Gravity is the better of the two... it kept me on the edge of my seat and I’m not a sci-fi fan.

trodding the boards ...from 38 Also adding to the success is the buffet served before the show and catered by John Besh’s American Sector restaurant. On the day I attended, there was moist chicken breasts perfectly complemented by corn maque choux; expertly made dirty rice; string beans; a nice green salad; excellent potato salad; fresh rolls; and mouth-watering bread pudding. Water and iced tea were waiting for patrons at their tables, as they should be. If the otherwise fine wait staff had just offered to refill the iced tea glasses, things would’ve been perfect.

The New Orleans Opera/Der Vampyr at The Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts Much as I love opera, I’m not one to see the same old warhorses again and again. As New Orleans Opera has been rebuilding its audience since Katrina, I can appreciate their cautious programming to insure financial success, but, other than the magnificent concerts featuring Placido Domingo, in the past seven seasons, they’ve not offered anything that I hadn’t seen before. Well, this season NOO has thrown caution to the wind and I am happily back in its audience. Other than the season finale, La Boheme, NOO is presenting rarely seen works this year and based on the first offering, I’d strongly encourage you to check them out. Der Vampyr (The Vampire) by Heinrich Marschner started things off with a perfect nod to the Halloween season. Apparently this was once a hugely popular work but it has long since fallen out of favor. That’s a shame because it offers some lush, Romantic music and a plot that’s no more ridiculous than many other operas. Instead of going the full Gothic route, the NOO adapted the libretto to current day New Orleans which isn’t that much of a stretch what with The Originals being filmed here. Curses and blood and virginal corpses figured in the tale, as well as streetcars and second lines, and, of course, in the end, love conquered all. Starting with something as campy as this, Stage Director Matthew Lata wisely had his cast play things as straight as possible emphasizing the work’s authentic emotions. Lata began the performance with a clever stroke by having the “undead” chorus members rise one by one from seats scattered around the auditorium and approach the stage. I almost expected them to launch into the dance from Thriller.

I’m not sure whose concept it was to set the tale here but what a masterly idea it was. Not only did projections of Bourbon Street, St. Louis Cathedral, and underneath The Crescent City Connection draw us in to the goings-on with a cinematic flow, but I felt a possessive pride knowing this was done just for us and that no other audience anywhere else could fully appreciate it as we did. What anyone could appreciate was Conductor Robert Lyall’s accomplished job of giving the score propulsive force yet never overpowering the singers who sang in German but delivered the dialog in English. NOO assembled a superb cast for Der Vampyr. As the Vampire Ruthven who must sacrifice three brides within 24 hours(!), Nicholas Pallesen seems to be on the verge of a major career. He sang with a

plush baritone and devilish flair, exuding charisma in his duets with Bride #2 Jennifer Tiller, no slouch in the charisma department either. Tiller, along with Bride #1 Irene Roberts and Survivor Bride Marjorie Owens all delivered sumptuous tone, each bringing Wagnerian steeliness to these tough ladies. Owens, especially, in the brief moments when she’s allowed true love, sang with rapturous joy. Stephen West as her father made an appropriate Big Daddytype with his commanding bass voice. Next up, in honor of Benjamin Britten’s centennial year, is his Noah’s Flood (Nov. 15-17 at Trinity Episcopal Church) followed by Massenet’s delightful Cendrillon (Cinderella) (February 14 and 16, 2014, Mahalia Jackson Theater). I’m looking forward to them already.
