Gay Press Spending Sets Record at 381.4 Million in 2013; Circulation & Gay Tailored Ads also on Upswing; Annual Report Reveals New York, NY – Rivendell Media has released its popular, annual Gay Press Report to reveal that spending in America’s “Gay Press” for 2013 is at a record high of $381.4 million, up 18.2% from 2012 and showing that LGBT community media is as strong as ever. Spending and circulation in LGBT print media is up for 2013— bucking the trends in the mainstream press. Actual spending is up just over 18% from 2012 to $381.4 million making a new all-time high. Circulation and readership of LGBT media is also up a healthy 15.1%. “What a nice surprise to see both sales and circulation up by double digits” says Todd Evans, President and CEO of Rivendell Media. The LGBT print media once thought to be recession proof, was significantly affected by the recession and advertising showed wide swings from its previous high in 2009 of $349.6 million.

Among the other findings in the 2013 Gay Press Report: * 9 out of every 10 dollars spent in the gay press is spent locally. The gay press is comprised primarily of trusted community-owned businesses that reflect the specific need, interests and tastes of their readership. * In 2013, America’s gay and lesbian publications consisted of 125 individual titles, roughly the same size as 2012 with an addition of only 3 titles. Todd Evans, President and CEO of Rivendell Media Rivendell Media, the leading media representation firm for most LGBT publications in the US, reports that spending for 2014 should continue its growth based on impressive firstquarter sales for print advertising. “Print media remains an important part of the toolkit for any company trying to reach the diverse LGBT community,” said Tracy Baim, publisher of Windy City Times in Chicago. “This report shows that regional LGBT print media are especially key to national advertising campaigns. The LGBT community is among the most loyal of consumers, and they pay attention to brands that are creative and inclusive in their marketing efforts. It’s no longer good enough to say you have achieved a 100% ranking on LGBT issues. Brands need to dedicate marketing dollars to this niche, to fully communicate their diversity goals and to see a

Tony Marino's Annual St. Joseph's Day Block Party brings 500 Guest to Bourbon Street by Rip Naquin What an amazing site as we strolled down to the 1000 block of Bourbon Street reaching the police barricades as Tony Marino's St. Joseph's Day Block Party began. Both Marsha and I were so excited since this was our first time. Friends Jeff Palmquist and Coca Mesa invited us as their guests. After checking in at the barricade, we were allowed in. The beautiful sunny afternoon cast an amazing glow on Mr. Marino's St. Joseph's Altar right on Bourbon Street in front of his home. Not only that, he even had opera stars singing live from his balcony above. There was also an equally beautiful St. Joseph's Altar inside the home itself. The traditional gift packets with St. Joseph's prayer card and medal, lucky fava bean, and Italian cookie was a wonderful treat. Since my middle name is Joseph, St. Joseph's Day has always been a special day to me. We usually go to three or four altars every year. This however, was I believe the best St. Joseph's Day I've ever had. How could anything get any better than this as we mingled with some 500 guests, many who we knew, sipping non-ending glasses of wine. There was even a massive St. Patrick's Day feast on rows of banquet tables on Bourbon Street. Nothing like living in New Orleans! Thank you Jeff and Coca for including us. Mr. Marino, your hospitality and generosity made for a wonderful evening which we will always remember.

LGBT March & Rally Against Hate & Violence The LGBT March and Rally Against Hate and Violence is set for Wednesday, April 2nd, 8-9pm which begins at Armstrong Park in New Orleans.

According to host A D Kus Supps, "Please join us for a rally and a march to show the presence of the LGBT community in the French Quarter. As I am sure many of you know, there have been several recent anti-gay hate crimes in New Orleans and especially in the French Quarter and the Marigny. There have been many robberies as well. It is time that we start to show our connection to our community. We need people to see that we are united in our commitment to each other. We need them to know that if someone in our community has been victimized that we are there to support each other, either by getting people to report crimes that have been committed or by helping them to report the crimes if they feel that cannot do it on their own. During this march, the NOPD will be there to escort us and protect us. This is a great

opportunity to get to know your local police. I encourage signage and your presence to show that we can be united and that it is the responsibility of us all to overcome these crimes in our neighborhood. So please join us on a walk through the French Quarter starting at the entrance to Armstrong Park at the corner of N. Rampart and St. Ann. Details at www.Facebook.com, enter LGBT March and Rally Against Hate and Violence in search box.

Michigan Marriage Ban Struck Down DETROIT (3-21-14) – In a landmark decision, a federal judge ruled today that an amendment to the Michigan state constitution that excluded same-sex couples from marriage in the state violates federal law. ”Today’s decision is a huge victory for the people of Michigan. The momentum toward LGBT equality is accelerating as yet

allowing same-sex couples to marry is a matter of fundamental freedoms, economic security, and family values.” The lawsuit was filed by private attorneys on behalf of an Oakland County lesbian couple – April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse – who have been together for more than a decade and are raising three adopted children. The children,

however, are only able to have legal parent-child relationships with one of their parents because Michigan courts have interpreted state law to only allow couples to jointly adopt if they are married. The couple wants their children to have the security of having legal ties with both of them. [continued on 13]

another federal court finds that denying samesex couples the fairness and dignity of marriage is unconstitutional,” said Kary L. Moss, ACLU of Michigan executive director. “Public opinion has changed drastically since 2004 when voters amended the Michigan constitution to exclude samesex couples from marriage. tional amendment not only prohibited marriage, but virtually every form of recognition of same-sex relationships, including civil unions, domestic partnerships, and even domestic partner health insurance coverage. ”At its core, this case is about protecting Michigan families,” said Jay

moments in gay new orleans history by Frank Perez E-mail: f.perez@sbcglobal.net

“LGBT Community Center of New Orleans” The Lesbian and Gay Community Center of New Orleans turns twenty-two years old this year and a look back at its history is a fascinating study in the age old dichotomy of the ideal versus the reality. From its inception, the Community Center has embraced the noble vision of unifying the various sub-groups of New Orleans’ LGBT+ community; conversely, the reality is that the Center’s history has been marked by sharp division stemming from a lack of leadership, general dysfunction, and unrealized potential. Historically, the Center’s Board of Directors has been prone to coup d’états from within. And yet, the Center is still here, which is something of a miracle considering all the challenges it has faced. In 1992 the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of New Orleans was founded by a group of friends who believed the local LGBT community needed a central organization / location to dispense information and provide resources. Founding members included Stewart Butler, Betty Caldwell, Alfred Doolittle, Mark Harper, Nikki Kearby, Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain, Toni Pizanie, Dianne Ranna, Alan Robinson, J. Michael Tetty, Leo Watermeier, and others. Originally, the Center was located at 816 North Rampart Street in the first floor of a property owned by former State Representative and mayoral candidate Leo Watermeier. By the mid1990s, the Center’s Board began considering the possibility of a permanent home. In 1996, Co-Chairs Rip Naquin and Rene Parks led a fundraising campaign helping the Community Center raise $30,000 for a building fund. These funds were placed in two CDs. In 1999, Nikki Kearby and Betty Caldwell, who had co-founded the New Orleans chapter of PFLAG in 1982, graciously offered the Community Center the use of a building they owned on Decatur Street in the heart of the Marigny. Kearby and Caldwell renovated the space and charged the Center a very modest rent with the understanding that as the Center grew, the rent would gradually increase in order to offset the cost of the renovations. Kearby and Caldwell even expressed their intention to bequeath the building to the Community Center on the condition that it demonstrate it was stable and sustainable. None of this was in writing; Kearby and Caldwell made the arrangement in good faith. Various Boards throughout the 2000s squandered that good faith as well as the good faith of members of the community. The money raised for the building fund began to be diverted and used for operational expenses. In 2009, the Center was on the verge of closing due to lack of adequate funding, a sad note which Ambush columnist Toni Pizanie (and Center founder and former Board member) recognized in her column, “Sappho’s

Psalm.” Citing the Board’s arrogance, Pizanie wrote, “The blame falls directly on the Center Board, and the nonbusiness like or non-organized attitude that has caused the Center to fail . . . they have been unwilling to take advice or direction from anyone.” This criticism hit a nerve and as a result, the entire Board (Mary Griggs, Dave Haynik, Shawn Johnson, and Charlotte Klasson), with the exception of Crystal Little, resigned in protest. Little, a longtime volunteer, pleaded with them to not resign and argued that Pizanie’s criticism was constructive, but they didn’t want to hear it, thus proving Pizanie’s point.

tracked hate-based crimes against LGBT and other groups targeted by discrimination. In 2003 the Center began hosting an annual Trans Day of Remembrance to commemorate the lives of transgender people murdered every year. After Hurricane Katrina, the Center hosted a meeting of the Community Coalition, a collective of LGBT and allied organizations that met to share information and collaborate during the initial recovery period. And in 2011 the Center established a program called Safe Space for LGBT and questioning youth. The Community Center is currently in a transitional phase. Last year the Center moved into a small administrative space in the Art Egg Studios on S. Broad Street and established a new Mission Statement. The current mission of the Community Center is to provide resources and advocacy that foster community development and social and economic justice efforts to strengthen the collective power of gender and sexual minorities and their allies in GNO area. The vision of the Center is to create a greater New Orleans area where gender and sexual minorities are equitable and empowered. Concerning the future of the Center, current Director Sebastian Rey says, “We want to provide the things we can—information, referrals, advocacy, and communication. In fact, our online community resource directory

will provide accessible information about LGBT and allied doctors, lawyers, and other services in our area. Moving forward, we will focus especially on issues of economic and racial injustice, which we know disproportionately affect the LGBT community. In New Orleans, the income gap is severe, and LGBT people feel the effects through un- or underemployment—and we know that economic instability is a risk factor for HIV and suicide, which already ravage our community. Most importantly, we want to balance the trend of creating top-down programming with community-driven projects. We will support individuals in our community to pursue their own visions for LGBT equality, offering the tools for one person to create the veterans’ support program and another an LGBT youth book club. Nothing will move this community forward faster than enabling the individuals within it to realize their own power and their own ability to organize and make change.” Although the Center’s future is uncertain, one thing can be said about its history: it’s a prolonged study in untapped potential. In that regard, The Center is truer reflection of our local LGBT+ community than the Center’s critics would like to admit. Then again, Rey wryly observes, “Asking for LGBT unity is like asking for world peace.” Nevertheless, it’s still a good question, certainly one worth asking.

Book of the Month

Ambush columnist, the lateToni Pizanie When the building housing the Center suffered extensive water damage during Hurricane Isaac in 2012, Kearby and Caldwell’s adopted daughter (who had assumed management of the property) told the Community Center Board that it would have to pay increased rent to cover the repairs, the Board (which never paid the increased rent they agreed to in 1999 to cover the initial renovations to the building) decided it could no longer stay there. The Center has been homeless since then. All this is not to say the Center has not done some good. In 2000 the Center received a federal grant and launched the Hate Crimes Project, which

Stephanie Plum has returned with another fast-paced comedic adventure to keep readers riveted in Janet Evanovich’s latest installment Notorious Nineteen. All your favorite characters are back along with a new cast of bad guys. This new novel has lingerie saleswoman turned bounty hunter Plum tracing a skip wanted for embezzling millions from an assisted living facility. But tracking down the con man may prove harder than she thought. She teams up with her on-again, offagain boyfriend Joe Morelli to crack the case, while helping her mentor (and sometimes lover) Ranger fend off a deadly special forces adversary. She even enlists the help of her grandmother to go undercover at the old age complex with hilarious results. Evanovich once again keeps the suspense and the witty mishaps high. One of the reasons I love this series is its ability to bring the characters to life. With each of her novels, it is like I am visiting with old friends. Very rarely do I find laugh out loud books and this

series succeeds extremely well. Plum, although a flawed character, is the ultimate underdog that you root for. Each book is somewhat formulaic, but I never become disinterested, because the characters are so much fun. This speaks volumes for Evanovich’s ability to keep your attentiveness after nineteen books. For more information or this novel or any other Janet Evanovich books, go to www.evanovich.com.

a community within communities

by The Rev. Bill Terry, Rector St. Anna’s Episcopal Church Email: fr.bill@stannanola.org

The Very Purpose for this Column It is a grand and mysterious abode set about with vines and rusted fences. It is a court yard waiting to be transformed. It is a part of the spiritual realm that invites souls to meet. This grand mortar mansion has been a home to creoles, a residence to gentrification, a flop house for the addicted, a movie set, and house that cannot be hidden but languishes in noted disrepair. Four years ago a risk was taken to purchase this grand old home by St. Anna’s Church. The idea was to repurpose it to greater use and a new dignity and grandeur. The Grand Design has little to do with historic preservation, although that is certainly part of it, and much to do with … “A Community within Communities.” Not this column but a reality. The grand old building described is that center of our community life that is a cross roads for Gay and Straight, Black, Red, Yellow, White (or as my infant son corrected “Peach”). The Dodwell House is what we dream of in what has been called such things as “The Rainbow Coalition” or “The Beloved Community.” But more than speeches it is a sacrament in living terms. The Marsaudet-Dodwell House Community Center is an outward and visible sign of the inward and spiritual graces. These graces are called: charity for others, inclusivity that all might be one, a place to renew, restore, reconcile and to be a safe meeting place. The first fund raiser four years ago looked like this. It was a nice bunch of church folks, church folks, and church folks. It was an Episcopal Church project. So, by definition the event was tasteful very WASP and low key. NOT! A Bishop offered thanks, a Black pastor offered prayer, and yes the divine team of Tammy Tarmac and Miss Elizabeth Bouvier were the hostess with the mostest. Good gospel voices from the Treme Choir rung out; great Latin American harmonies hung in the air from Patrice Fisher and Arpa, art was offered by Amzie Adams the French Quarter character and Mr. Louisiana Leather 2010 was honored. Rip and Marsha were generous and open to the concept. A community within communities was started. In these four years a coalition of companions has helped us to: clean the facility out of debris, put into use the dependency, and to do some major structural repairs. Yet, much remains to be done. The primary missions of that little church, St. Anna’s, are the Medical Mission (featured in Ambush) and Anna’s Arts for Kids also mentioned in Ambush. These two combined save lives. Space limits the stories that can be shared but the point is all human beings deserve dignity, life, and hope. There are about 30 children and families that are cared for that are up against the odds. Help us as a community to help and empower them. The Phoenix, Mag’s, Kajun’s Pub, Cutter's, The Friendly Bar, Lords of Leather, Bears, Bear Trappers and all manner of LGBT community have at one time or another helped to save the lives of these children and families: A community within communities!

Le Petit Scores with Chita Rivera! The New Orleans Broadway Series has added another feather in their cap of bringing top named talent to the Crescent City with the legendary Chita Rivera. Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre and Producer Mark Cortale are producing a night of “Broadway @ Le Petit” starring two-time Tony winner Chita Rivera in two shows on Saturday, April 19th. Rivera will be joined by Sirius XM Radio’s Seth Rudetsky as pianist and host for an evening of unforgettable music and conversation. Chita Rivera originated the Broadway roles of Anita in West Side Story, Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie, and Velma in Chicago. A recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor, Ms. Rivera has won two Tony Awards as best leading actress in a musical and has received six additional Tony Award nominations. She most recently appeared on Broadway in Chita Rivera: the Dancer’s Life, the story of her own life in the theater. Among her many other celebrated stage credits are The Rink, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Nine, and Zorba. Rivera also played Nicky in the film version of

I am not sure if the rest of the city is exhausted, but this year’s Mardi Gras celebration wore me out. It is true as you get older the bounce back period from partying is substantially longer than it used to be. Remember when you were twenty-one and could drink all night, come home, shower, and work all the next day. Well if I did that now, I would be a drooling zombie by lunchtime. After Fat Tuesday, my world slowed to almost a screeching halt, except for receiving ashes on Wednesday and work, my body rested through Saturday. I did manage to meet some friends for dinner on Saturday at the new hotspot in the Bywater called Oxalis. This restaurant is a particular find for those who relish in combining craft cocktails, fine wine and spirits with amazing cuisine. Located in the building that once housed the local favorite Bywater BBQ, the look and feel of the entire restaurant has been transformed into a hip, stylish place for gathering. The cocktail menu is extensive favoring whiskeys, but do offer all the other potent libations. Their Boilermaker menu is wonderful and I urge everyone to try one. My favorite so far has been the Lion’s Tail, a delicious combination of Bourbon, All Spice Dram, Angostura Bitters, Simple Syrup and Fresh Lime Juice. On the menu, sharers include excellent choices for the charcuterie and house-ripened cheese plates. Under the small plates, the Sweet Potato Poutine is to die for and either the choices of American or Korean Chicken Wings are perfect table appetizers. The Cauliflower Steak entree rates high scores while the Steak Frites and the Oxalis Burger are more heavier and satisfying choices. [contined on 32]

trodding the boards by Brian Sands

Perfect Wedding at Fuhrmann Auditorium, Covington through March 30 and Slidell’s Northshore Harbor Center (Apr. 4-6) When a play opens with the discovery of very-soon-to-be-married man in bed with a woman other than his intended, both en déshabillé and hung over, a sex farce is likely to be lurking. And, sure enough, once Perfect Wedding gets going

under the gaydar ...from 30 The atmosphere of this winding restaurant is comfortable and tailored to fit the menu with dark woods. There are two bars, the large entrance one and a smaller on in the middle while both patio areas are wonderful spots for a memorable dinner. Then on Sunday, I went to see “Perfect Wedding” at Teatro Wego. For those not in the know, Jefferson Performing Arts Society (JPAS) offers fabulous theatrical shows in Westwego. The farcical comedy identity is written by Robin Hawkins and bought to life for New Orleans audiences by director Phillip Benson. The following week, I revved up my engines after the much needed break and attended the Degas House’s tribute to Lafcadio Hearn’s Creole Cook Book Dinner. Hearn was an international writer, known best for his books about Japan, especially his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories. In the United States, Hearn is also known for his writings about New Orleans based on his ten-year stay in that city. Here is a tidbit of useless trivia: more books have been written by Lafcadio than any former resident of New Orleans except Louis Armstrong. This seven-course dining extravaganza was prepared wonderfully by Chef Jacob Cureton and included some amazing dishes such as Tomato Jam, Queen Victoria’s Favorite Green Pea Soup, Mutton That Will Taste Like Venison, Chocolate Cream Drops and Orange Cheesecakes. Each dish was accompanied by a reading from the cookbook. Cureton did an excellent job putting his own interpretation on each since dish since none of the recipes contained any measurements. Thursday, I stayed on the culinary track by attending the United Way’s 14th Annual Got Gumbo Cook Off at the Royal Sonesta. Over a dozen restaurants were on hand to give their offerings on this New Orleans staple. All of the different dishes ranged from the traditional to the exotic. My favorites included all three of the gumbos from Restaurant R’evolution, the veggie gumbo from Bourbon House and the exotic gumbo from Desire Oyster Bar.

The weekend my St. Patrick’s day festivities kicked into high gear with Lark on the Park on Friday, which is City Park’s fundraiser fashioned after the Audubon Institute’s Zoo To Do. Lots of restaurants and bars pepper the Botanical Gardens while Flow Tribe performed that night. Saturday was all about the luck of the Irish. My friends Beaux and Barrett joined my day long adventure beginning at Contessa Breaux’s St. Patty’s Party on St. Charles Avenue for the Uptown Irish Parade. I dusted off my dirty tutu (an outfit I wear every year in honor of a friend of mine who passed away from cancer) and caught cabbage and enjoyed many jello shots. After the parade we strolled along the route and popped in on a few parties. Mark Behar and his partner Jeff had a wonderful Irish fare set out. Then we traipsed to the Quarter for more merriment and drinking, have to keep up the Irish tradition. We finished up with the Big Easy Sisters Trade Bingo Fundraiser at the Phoenix. All in all, good decisions had been made so far this weekend. Then Sunday Funday happened and all bets were off. I started with the parade in Metairie, moved to the Easter sponsor party at Cutter’s, followed up with the Lords of Leather Rush Party, continued with the Sunday Sister Social at The Golden Lantern and Dingo at Oz, then ended the night in a hazy fog. But on a positive note, my Irish ancestors (I could have them) would be doing a jog in their grave knowing how well I kept up the entire weekend. On the actual St. Patrick’s Day which was Monday, I worked then managed to attend the Downtown Irish Parade with my friend Laura mostly because it passed on my street, other than that reason, I would have been laid up. Here’s to hoping your blarney stone keeps shining the entire year round for you. Next up French Quarter Festival, Easter and Jazz Festival, are you ready!

Tony’s Tidbits of Wisdom Love her or hate her, everyone has to agree that Bianca has stepped up the talent quota on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

it provides lots of laughs. Even better, by the second act, in addition to the yucks, it transforms into a gently wise romcom as well.\ Robin (Don’t Dress for Dinner) Hawdon’s comedy has smoothly traveled from its original London hotel setting to a Louisiana plantation home B&B. Michele Miatello’s posh set reminds one of Oak Alley or Annadele’s in Covington. As with most such farces, Perfect Wedding starts slowly. The first fifteen minutes or so offered little hint of the [continued on 33] Besides cheering on the home girl, Bianca's brutal honesty and shoot from the hip attitude is a refreshing change to the past whining queens or bitchy cattiness. She takes these girls to a whole new level of shade. Not only is she quick with the one-liners, but she can sew, act, lip sync and most of all entertain us. I have recently heard others say she is not talented or her style of humor is not funny: she curses too much, she insults people, and she is just plain rude. To them I just say, go #@$$$$ yourself. Just kidding, I just channeled Bianca for a moment. Seriously, my only comment to that is that she at least tells you things to your face (and it is an act), unlike most of these haters who say things behind people’s backs or on Facebook on a regular basis (again what makes you any different than she is, oh yes she has talent and is on a television show, sorry my bad). The one main thing that rings true is that Bianca del Rio is a great ambassador for the city and anyone from New Orleans that does well nationally deserves a huge congratulations. Here’s to hoping she sashays her way into the winning circle. RuPaul’s Drag Race can be seen on Monday nights at 8pm central time on Logo.

To Quote A Queen To celebrate Bianca del Rio’s run on RuPaul’s Drag Race, I thought it would be fitting to have a few quotes from the Sashay Queen herself. So here are a few of my favorites from RuPaul I hope you enjoy. And Bianca, give those other girls shade, New Orleans is rooting for you. “Learn to love yourself, ‘cause if you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else?” “When the going gets tough, the tough reinvent.” “We all came into this world naked. The rest is all drag.” “You have to use what you have to get what you want.” “Don’t be afraid to use all the colors in the crayon box.” If you have an event, story or idea, you want covered, contact me at ledgemgp@gmail.com.

sooner than expected, Perfect Wedding provides a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable time with its not-too-toonaughty double entendres, mistaken identities involving girlfriends and chambermaids, and three doors that get a workout. And let’s not forget that toilet bowl brush that’s wielded as a weapon.

Director Phillip A. Benson keeps things moving at a dandy pace allowing the humor to emerge naturally as the wacky situations build up; only his use of music that comes in every now and then seems unnecessary. Perhaps Benson could have polished the overall stylization to a higher sheen—Lindsey

It closed, however, of the requisite dramatic tension out of just three months later, the victim of this tale. Still, compared to Gayland, which poor ticket sales. It has since gone on to be done all over the world; there was appeared in last year’s Fringe Fest and even talk once about mounting it on had a similar homo-normative theme, Zanna is on a level with South Pacific Broadway. Subtitled “A Musical Fairy Tale” by and My Fair Lady. Closeted behind Zanna’s overly creator Tim Acito (with additional lyrics sweet surface, however, is, I think, a

much more interesting story as personified by Roberta (Allee Peck) and Mike (Larry Johnson) the soon-to-be ex’s of Kate and Steve, respectively, that deals with those who are never lucky in love. Zanna, similarly, is in love with someone who doesn’t love him back but, in one of the show’s multiple endings, seems to wind up with someone who loves him; does Zanna really feel the same way or is he just on the rebound? To say that Acito could have the basis of a Chekhovian musical would probably be stretching things—A LOT— but it did come to mind. (I loved the Chekhovianish line “Nothing cheers me up like wallowing in my own despair.”) As with Evil Dead, Director Christopher Bentivegna has assembled an extravagantly talented and hard-working cast, some in multiple roles. That said, on opening night some of their voices seemed a little frayed, the result, I suspect, of an intense rehearsal period. I expect by now they’re all in top form. They certainly already were in top form for Lindsey Romig’s choreography which was not only peppy and cute but worked intricate miracles in the small space. In a cast where there were no weak links, I especially enjoyed Heck’s conflicted Kate, Kali Russell in general and her old style, high-kicking waitress in particular, and Elyse McDaniel’s “What’s-Her-Name,” that good ol’ member of the student body who never made much of an impression. Bentivegna costumed the cast in bold rainbow flag colors and added nice touches like a rainbow’s spectrum of notebook binders as well. Cartoonlike, perhaps, but not inappropriate for a fairy tale like this. Richard Mayer and Bentivegna’s simple set design allowed for a multiplicity of scenes with generally smooth set changes but their lighting could’ve been sharper. Michelle Bahlinger’s sound design definitely needs improvement; at times, announcements could barely be heard. Musical Director Natalie True, however, did an exemplary job as always. And not sure who did the special effects but Zanna’s flying pet bird was a hoot! I wish I could be more enthusiastic about Zanna, Don’t! (I also wish more people had caught the Anyone Can Whistle reference but that’s another story) but I guess I’m just gonna be in the minority for this one. Me, I’m looking forward to Zanna and Her Three Sisters.

Metropolitan Opera HD Encore/Prince Igor at AMC Elmwood Palace 20 through May 14 The recent Metropolitan Opera HD Encore screening of Borodin’s Prince Igor was more resonant than even the live broadcast a few days earlier. In that brief time, the Ukraine

crisis had intensified and the thuggish boyars on the screen made the brilliant director Dmitri Tcherniakov seem prescient in ways even he couldn’t have anticipated when he originally planned the production many months earlier. Prince Igor’s beautiful music hadn’t been heard at the Met in nearly a century; the last time it was performed there the Russian Revolution was going on. Back then, it would’ve been impossible to imagine the technology that allows the Met’s performances to be broadcast all over the world. Though some technical glitches remained in the Encore screening, the ability to enjoy this production without having to travel to New York far outweighed them. Opera singer Eric Owens made a good host (though I slightly prefer the ladies who host such as Deborah Voigt and Susan Graham) and, as usual, singers could be seen waving at the camera from behind him. When he interviewed Ildar Abdrazakov at the end of an act, the blood and dirt was still caked on the star’s face. Other interviews, both live and taped, truly enriched the overall experience. The broadcast offered clearly legible subtitles and excellent sound, though on some close-ups it didn’t quite seem to be emanating from the singer’s mouth. The fine camerawork brought us right into the action on stage and, during scene changes, allowed us to see all the intricacies involved in moving the massive sets around; it was especially fun to see a “dead” body picked up and easily carried away with its papiermâché weight. Something was lost from seeing the opera live only when Tcherniakov used projections on the front curtains, and during the Polovetsian Dances which he set in a field of 12,500 poppies. During this vibrant sequence too many close-ups undercut the overall visual power of Itzik Galili’s inventive choreography danced superbly by his multi-ethnic company. Otherwise, the magnificent singing more than made up for this. And Tcherniakov’s ending, with Igor leading his fellow citizens as they begin to rebuild their city was extremely moving as it recalled our own similar postKatrina efforts. You’ll have three more opportunities this season to take advantage of these broadcasts: Puccini’s La Bohème (live on April 5; Encore on April 9); Mozart’s Così fan tutte with James Levine conducting (April 26/April 30); and Rossini’s La Cenerentola with the lustrous Joyce DiDonato singing her first Met performances of the Cinderella title role and the handsome tenor Juan Diego Flórez as her Prince Charming (May 10/May 14). If you love opera, or have been too intimidated to see it live, don’t miss these.
