“Queen of the Bears” Candy Samples Rocks ‘House of Blues’ for Decadence 2014 That ginger-haired classic from NYC, Miss Candy Samples is back for her sixth year, serving up her original music in her show, Sunday Services, at the House of Blues’ Big Mama’s Lounge, Sunday August 31 at 11:30am. Produced by Decadent Duck Events, “Queen of the Bears” Candy has made quite a splash on the Decadence circuit, presenting her pre-parade show and raising money for NO/AIDS Task Force's Food For Friends. What started out as a small ‘entertainment’ has grown into a 90-minute show complete with audience raffles which include Southwest Airline tickets, hotel offers and a Kindle Paperwhite. “Get there early, ‘cause we’ve got plenty of raffle tickets to get to sellin’,” says Candy. “We’re going to rock the House of Blues with this show, featuring new songs and old favorites.” This year’s theme, Under the Big Top, is especially meaningful for Candy. “We started this show as a grass roots fundraiser, and now its grown and grown. We’re hitting the big time ‘Under the Big Top’, y’all!” Troy Richardson of Decadent Ducks added, “It was time to find a bigger venue for the crowd that comes in to see Candy’s show and support NO AIDS, so the House of Blues seemed like the perfect place.” The self-proclaimed “Carole King of Drag Queens”, Candy tells the story of her life through song — sharing her ups and downs, all while keeping audiences in stitches. Her latest singles, “Queen of the Bears” and “Bear Season” tell of her love of the bear community, and she has been featured several times in Bear World Magazine. She plays throughout NYC, including her engagement at the Duplex Cabaret Theatre in Greenwich Village and her music catalog can be found on iTunes. Last year’s show at former Michael’s on the Park left quite the response from show-goers. One new fan wrote on Candy’s Facebook wall, “…honey, you’re not just an entertainer, you are a therapist, an inspirational speaker, and an instant friend. This bear loves you!” Whether you have the ticket for one of the many prizes, one always leaves Sunday Services feeling like a winner. Check out Candy’s show, a benefit for NO/AIDS Food For Friends on Sunday, August 31 @ 11:30am at House of Blues’ Big Mama’s Lounge, 229 Decatur Street. For more information, www.samplemycandy.com.

Decadence Book Signing at FAB Aug. 30 by Frank Perez Faubourg Marigny Art and Books (FAB) will host a book signing on Saturday, August 30, at 7pm. Clayton Delery-Edwards will be signing his new book The Up Stairs Lounge Arson and Gregory Alexander will be signing his new book The Holy Mark. On June 24, 1973, a fire in a New Orleans bar killed 32 people. This still stands as the deadliest fire New Orleans has ever seen. Arson was suspected, and investigators soon identified a likely culprit, but no arrest was ever made. Government and religious leaders who normally would have provided moral leadership at a time of crisis were either silent or were openly disdainful of the dead, most of whom were gay men. Although local officials distanced themselves, the fire soon became the focus of a brief but intense national relief effort organized by people such as the pioneering gay activists, Morty Manford and Morris Kight, as well as the Rev. Troy Perry, founder of The Metropolitan Community Church. Clayton Delery-Edwards has written a thorough history of the fire at the Up Stairs Lounge. He has drawn upon hundreds of sources including contemporary news accounts, interviews with former patrons of the lounge, and the extensive documentary trail left behind by the criminal investigations. The Up Stairs Lounge Arson tells the story of who used to go to this bar, what happened on the day of the fire, what course the investigations took, why an arrest was never made, and what the lasting effects of the fire have been, both in New Orleans and nationally. Clayton Delery-Edwards was born in Baton Rouge and raised in the New Orleans area. He attended the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, where he received both a B.A. and an M.A. in English. He later received a Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Since 1989 he has been a member of the faculty of The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts where he currently holds an administrative position as the Director of Academic Services. He has been interested in the fire at the Up Stairs Lounge ever since first following its news coverage in 1973. He lives with his husband, Aaron, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. In Gregory Alexander’s unique debut novel, The Holy Mark, a disgraced and exiled Catholic priest from a powerful New Orleans family ponders his future and reflects on his twenty-five years in the priesthood. Father Tony probably never should have been a priest. But there were none in the family, much to the shame of his immigrant Italian grandmother. So at his birth, when the old woman beheld a particular mark on his head and declared it to be a sign from God--a “holy mark”—his destiny was set. Those marked by God, though, are often marked by men as well: Father Tony’s jealous uncle will never forgive him for finding favor with the family matriarch. And with his ties to the city’s Catholic hierarchy, he’ll destroy his nephew if it takes the rest of his life. Meanwhile Father Tony is determined to outwit his uncle and the Church, even if he has to conceal his identity and prowl the streets of New Orleans by night to do it. The Holy Mark should appeal to anyone with an interest in Southern fiction, the clergy abuse scandals, Italian-American family dynamics, or just a good oldfashioned revenge story. Gregory Alexander is a lifelong Louisiana resident and has degrees from UNO in Psychology and American Literature, both of which disciplines are prominently featured in the novel. FAB is located at 600 Frenchmen Street. It is one of the nation’s oldest gay and lesbian themed bookstores.

Book of the Month Through the years, poetry is said to be the most beautiful form of prose. Poets have an inherent gift of stripping bare pretenses and showing the beauty and harsh reality of life. My choice for my August book for the month is Damon Ferrell Marbut’s Human Crutches. Like Marbut, many consider that life in the French Quarter of New Orleans a bar life. His book of poetry peels back the layers of the gay lifestyle and uncovers the splendor, drama and humor in a city known for its excesses.

in Dignity, Damon tackles many aspects of the Quarter life with both warmth and tenacity. I highly recommend reading this book, if only to see if you know any of these people. That also is part of the fun. For more information on the book, go to www.barebackpress.com.

Get A Seat At The Captain’s Table Daryl Dunaway, Captain Petronius Bal Masque LIV, invites you to join him and his krewe at a special Captain’s Dinner at Superior Seafood and Oyster Bar on Wednesday, August 27. The krewe is hosting an amazing night of good conversation and cuisine with a three-course dinner for only $45 (alcohol is separate). Break bread with the members of the oldest carnival krewe in the city at one of the hottest restaurants on St. Charles Avenue. Reservations are required. Superior seafood is located at 4338 St. Charles Avenue. For more information or to purchase tickets, email petronius1961@cox.net.

Fashion Jewelry Trunk Show

As a local, I have witnessed firsthand some of the exact things discussed on these pages. Met these people, seen their lives unfold before my eyes, both for the good and many tragically. Marbut’s time as a bartender in many of the city’s gay establishments have served him well as he has plenty of fodder for a series of books. The poems range in length and subject matter but all revolve around life in the Vieux Carre. Some of the more unique ones are even scribbled on bar napkins to add to their air of authenticity. Even though these characters described are fictional, we know them if you ponder the words. Many of the poems can shine a light on you, seeing yourself in many of these people. I absolutely adore when he calls New Orleans a third act city waiting to be written in the poem Know It All. Even in the most unpleasant poems in the book, the author’s love and respect for the city that burns brightly. Whether he is talking about people’s loneliness like in In Secret I Was With You or their desperation like

Everyone loves to sparkle, and in the gay community it is all about the glitter. Moan's Couture is hosting their Mardi Gras Truck Show on Saturday, September 13 from 5 – 8 pm at Albert Brown Salon. Moan’s Couture is a premier seller of high end costume jewelry. This trunk show is an excellent way to see a wide variety of their jewelry especially since Chris Crouch, the designer, will be present for the meet and greet champagne reception. Guests are invited to try on the jewels as the designer will be able to answer questions and offer advice on selections for people who are planning costumes for next year’s ball season. It is never too early to get your costume in order. Albert Brown Salon is located at 3424 Magazine Street. Moan's Couture will also be doing two trunk shows on Thursday and Friday, September 11 and 12 in Baton Rouge. For more information, go to www.moanscouture.com.

the "official" dish ...from 24 parade is the traditional 40th Southern Decadence Parade on Sunday, August 31. This parade contains no floats only fabulously outfitted revelers walking the route. It is led by our three wonderful grand marshals Chad Boutte, Reba Douglas and Aubrey Synclaire and their entourage. The party lines-up at 1pm with the start at 2pm and winds its way through the French Quarter also. If you only do one thing on my list, this parade is the one to catch. It is glamour on overload. 6. Make Up Please – This next thing to do is a hidden and free thing to do during Decadence that not many people know about. The grand marshals have their make-up party at The Friendly Bar in the Marigny. This is where they gather, put on their faces and don their gay apparel. They usually have some nice breakfast nibbles on hand also. The Friendly Bar is located at 2301 Chartres Street. 7. Enjoy the Longest Drag Show Ever – The Golden Lantern which is dubbed the official home of Southern Decadence hosts their Annual Official Southern Decadence Grand Marshals Drag Show (hell even the title is long) on Friday, August 29 starting at 11pm. The show features our current grand marshals as well as many former ones and special guests. This is like a drag queen jam session; everyone stops by and does a number it seems. But it is always a wonderful time and you get to see some great performers. The Golden Lantern is located at 1239 Royal Street. 8. Southern Decadence Kickoff Events – On Thursday, August 28, there are two kickoff events that are worth checking out. The first one Grand Marshals Reba Douglas, Chad Boutte and Aubrey Synclaire present the official kickoff party at the House of Blues from 7 – 10pm. This VIP Gala includes an open vodka bar, hors d’oeuvres, special performances and a live auction with all proceeds benefitting their charity PFLAG New Orleans. Advance tickets are $50 or $65 at the door. After the party, guests will then second line over to Harrah’s Casino for the second part of the night at Masquerade Night Club as they kick off the weekend with DJ Lady Bunny and JuJubee from Rupaul’s Drag Race. Doors open at 9:30pm and ticket prices are $5 with all the proceeds going to Southern Decadence and PFLAG. The House of Blues if located at 225 Decatur Street and Harrah’s is located at 228 Poydras Street. 9. Take A Walk – One thing about New Orleans is its rich and storied history. During Southern Decadence, the Crescent City Booking Agency is offering a Gay History Tour. Learn more about our fascinating and very decadent pass as you meander through the streets of the Quarter on this walk-

ing tour. For reservations or more information, call 504.568.0717. 10. Survive The Weekend – if you make it through the hectic pace of the weekend, congratulate yourself by taking part in the 17th Annual Southern Decadence Survivors Outer Loop Bar Crawl led by Cruise Director Ted Mahaffy honoring SDGMs XL Chad Boutte, Reba Douglas and Aubrey Synclaire. You begin your journey at 2pm with snacks at The Corner Pocket, then to The Double Play, Le Roundup, Voodoo Bar, and ending with a BBQ at GrandPre’s. This is a great way to spend your Labor Day, keep drinking. Once again, this is just a small summary of the many things to do over the weekend, so read Ambush completely for all the exciting things happening or check them out online at www.AmbushMag.com. And while you are in town, please make it a point to support all our advertisers, the New Orleans gay community welcomes you and wishes you a safe and satisfying Southern Decadence.

Party Down I cannot believe Southern Decadence is here already, it seems that just yesterday we just celebrated the New Year. Oh well time flies when you are drinking. The two weeks leading up to the holiday was a busy one. On Tuesday, the NO/AIDS Task Force hosted a night at Louisiana Pizza Kitchen Uptown to raise awareness for the NO/ AIDS Walk in September. A portion of all the sales that evening went to cover the expenses of the Walk. Many supporters turned out in force to receive information on teams as well as enjoy a great meal. Thursday of that week, I went to see the first of two plays. Bug is Tracy Lett’s emotional drama performed at the Allways Theatre. It is a gritty, desperate tale of two people that have severe psychological problems. The main character's issues whether imaginary or real is the core basis of the plot. Lett’s play premiered off Broadway in 2004 then was made into a film adaptation in 2006 with Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr. and Michael Shannon in the title roles. All of the action takes place in a seedy motel room, where a lonely waitress is hiding out from her abusive husband Jerry. One night she parties with her lesbian friend RC and meets Peter, a veteran of the Gulf War. This was an adult show with copious amounts of nudity and violence. I have to admit, it was as exhausting a play for the audience as it had to be for the actors. The following night, some friends got together to celebrate one of the Krewe of Armeinius best members and a true supporter of the gay community Albert Carey. To honor this milestone birthday, we hosted a soiree on the courtyard at Broussard’s with the theme come as your favorite Tennessee Wil-

liams character. I of course was Blanche from Streetcar. We chose the restaurant because Tennessee used to have brunches there on Sundays with friends that would literally last all day. Congrats Albert on another grand year and here is to many more. The next day was the Red Dress Run/Dirty Linen Night, or better known by me as drunken Saturday. I had been to Dirty Linen Night, but never the Red Dress Run and combining these two events is chaos. I mean this gives new meaning to painting the town red. Beaux, Barrett and I began the day with a party which began at 9:30am at the Omni Royal. We then traipsed down to the corner of St. Ann and Bourbon hanging out with the crowds at Oz and the Pub. At two I moseyed to GrandPre’s to emcee the Red Dress Revue. Opal Masters, Cookie St. Ann and Deja Déjà-Vu kept the crowds entertained as they shined brightly in their red ensembles. When the show ended we just rolled right into Dirty Linen Night attending a few private house parties, some we were even invited to and looking at the galleries and shops on Royal Street. One noteworthy thing we did attend was the new Tennessee Williams exhibit at Gallier House. Then obviously the retail bug caught me and I hit some of the shops on Royal with a fury. So much so, it was not until the following day and I saw all my purchases did I recall where I went. All I have to say is my socks from Rab Dab are adorable and my big blond wig from Fifi’s is fierce. Lesson boys and girls, retailing and cocktailing are never a good combination. The next week, I went to the second of my two plays seeing Saints and Sisters: Nuns with Guns in Old New Orleans on Wednesday at NOCCA. It was an interesting take on the radio shows of yore with a contemporary twist. On Friday, I returned to Broussard’s now becoming my new favorite hangout for their celebration of Napoleon’s 245th birthday (and Albert was worried about his age). They had complimentary champagne and a very potent drink called the Napoleon Complex, which if you think about it would be perfect for me. Saturday was all about the gay carnival krewes as I attended two fundraisers. The first was the Krewe of Armeinius’ Barbie-Q at GrandPre’s. It was an exciting afternoon with great grilled meats and trashy Barbie Show, which I am proud to say I was a part of. Frankie Fierce emceed as krewe members and supporters did numbers for the large crowd. I have to say my rendition as Barbie of “My Favorite Drink Is Alcohol” with Beaux and Barrett as my Ken dolls was spot on. Nothing like typecasting. Afterwards, we went to the Satyricon fundraiser Sippin’ in Sarongs held at the home of Marshall Harris on Bayou St. John. This lively pool party had everything like hula and

fire performers, flowing libations and delectable tropical cuisine in this lovely mansion on the water. Cheers to both krewes for two jobs well done. On Sunday, I went to the first ever Sushi Fest in New Orleans held at Mardi Gras World. It was a full afternoon of some great Japanese delicacies prepared by some of the best restaurants and caterers in the city. There was Sumo Wrestlers, a Geisha Stiltwalker, the uber sexy band Bag of Donuts, lots of sake and Sapporo beer along with the tasty cuisine. For being their first event, I thought it was a huge success and cannot wait to go back next year. That concludes my short and sweet two weeks, have a deliciously enjoyable Southern Decadence, see you on the streets.

To Quote a Queen In the gay world, there has been some great celebrity feuds, Joan Crawford and Betty Davis, Madonna and Elton John and Truman Capote with just about, well everybody. When I stumbled upon this list of noteworthy insults from our favorite queens, I had to share. So in the spirit of Southern Decadence, enjoy some of these more deliciously catty remarks. “She has a cult, and what the hell is a cult except a gang of rebels without a cause. I have fans. There’s a big difference.” — Joan Crawford on Bette Davis ”I wouldn’t piss on her if she was on fire.” — Bette Davis on Joan Crawford “When I get hold of her, I’ll tear out every hair of her mustache!” — Tallulah Bankhead about Bette Davis “Darling, they’ve absolutely ruined your perfectly dreadful play.” --Tallulah Bankhead to Tennessee Williams after seeing the film version of one of his plays. “The easiest way for you to lose 10 pounds is just to take off your wig.” — Madonna to Elton John “She looks like a f*#king fairground stripper.” — Elton on Madonna “That isn’t writing at all, it’s typing.” — Truman Capote about Jack Kerouac’s On the Road “I always said little Truman had a voice so high it could only be detected by bats.” — Tennessee Williams on Truman Capote “It was a good career move.” — Gore Vidal on Truman Capote’s death

moments in gay new orleans history by Frank Perez E-mail: f.perez@sbcglobal.net Photo by: Larry Graham, GrahamStudioOne.COM

“Grand Marshal Observations” This year Southern Decadence is expected to draw over 150,000 gay revelers to New Orleans, the vast majority of whom probably have no idea of the annual event’s fascinating history or the many rituals associated with it. Of all the traditions associated with Southern Decadence, perhaps the most intriguing is the selection of the Grand Marshal(s). For the first several years (1974—1980), the Grand Marshal was selected by group consensus. And who constituted this group? At its core were those who hosted the original party that grew into Southern Decadence. Southern Decadence authority to select his or began as a private party in her successor(s). Neither 1972. a community within communities by The Rev. Bill Terry, Rector St. Anna’s Episcopal Church, New Orleans Email: fr.bill@stannanola.org

“Alpha and Omega” Alpha and Omega are Greek letters. They also symbolize the beginning and the end. They are also used to describe Jesus. I also suppose that somewhere they are a fraternity or sorority. Who knows? Decadence Weekend is a sort of Alpha and Omega. It is the end of the dog days of summer yet it is still very warm. It is the start of the social season for many. For churches like St. Anna’s Advent is like Decadence in that it is the start of the Christian Seasonal Calendar. It offers the beauty of greenery and color changes. It talks much about what was and what is to come. It is therefore the Alpha and Omega of Church seasons, the end of “Ordinary Time” and the start of a new liturgical calendar. One thing about Decadence is it is truly a living in the moment time. It is debauchery, fun, drinks, parties, gayety (pun intended) as well as talks and lectures. I am told it is becoming more of a visitor driven festival and less local. Like most of those things there may be disconnects but it is what it is and despite the influx of visitors there are many opportunities to have some fun. Yes? If nothing else it certainly is a big bang to start off the social season in New Orleans in the LGBT community because after that bacchanal the plans begin for all sorts of good things. So, how has your summer been (Omega)? Did you reach out a bit during our sultry days and meet and greet someone new? Did you venture out of your comfort zone? Yea, remember we talked about that. Did you visit

other places, take pictures, enjoy unfamiliar landscapes and venues? If not, the good news is, you can start to reach out further than your own turf. Why, because it is also Alpha, a new season. So why does this column go on ad nauseam about community, reaching out, meeting new people, hospitality and so on? First, there is a hint in the name of this column “A Community within Communities.” You see our country, our city, our lives have become so compartmentalized that we find ourselves by our human nature segregated. LGBT with LGBT and the forces of fear continue to reign. Straight with straight, white with white, black with black, and the forces of fear continue to reign. We talk a good game about acceptance but do we live into that reality? At some point, it seems to me, someone has to take a risk to get to know and appreciate “the otherness” in our communities. There may have been a reason for the Gay Ghetto. Perhaps it is time to change that a bit. There may have been a reason for the black ghetto? It is time to change that. Believe me I understand those forces of fear that cause us to herd together. Why do you think that we have gated communities, subdivisions set apart, urban decay, and increasing numbers of hate driven incidents. We talk a good game about equality but when we are offered equality what do we do with it? We gather in our herds to stay safe. I also understand the forces of fear that cause people to “hate” the other. So many do not really know

LGBT persons not really and not in context that they shroud our community with silly myths and untruths. I once ran into a letter circulated by a church person to members of a church saying that Integrity, a gay voice in the Episcopal Church, was “meeting late at night plotting ways and means to transform our children into gays and to promote the gay agenda.” Yea, right! Sad really sad and if that person only knew that those of whom he was writing were not meeting late at night to plot, more likely meeting late at night at oh let’s see, Kajun's Pub, Mag’s, Friendly Bar, Cutters, Lafitte in Exile, and the only plotting was plans for costumes for Halloween, Decadence, and some of our fabulous gay balls. The only conspiracy is a conspiracy of generosity as the community helps the ill, the shut-ins, the despondent, and raises monies for things like food pantries, toys for children, and other good works. Yea, right it’s a conspiracy and if it is one it’s a good one. Homophobia is normally born out of ignorance and a culture gone bad. The culture is changing. But ignorance still has a grip on the state of our state, our city, and often communities within the city. So, do we stay in herds, unknown, different, mysterious, scary…other? A community within a community

should not be a ghetto in a community. It is time to venture out a bit and become less comfortable outside of the herd. Maybe a co-worker who does not know LGBT community can be invited to a dinner or a drink at one of our many local pubs – just a thought? I am convinced that the more people know each other the less afraid they are of what they do not know. In our faith we call this phenomena “The Kingdom of God.” Such a place is always near and not far off. Jesus at one point said it is here in this time and place if we have eyes to see and ears to listen. It is that place where harmony, love, charity, giving, and profound care for others is the norm. Help us to make our community within the larger community that self same “Kingdom of God.” So as we enter a new season of Alpha and Omega we can and should end our seclusion and separation and begin to claim our inheritance of equality, justice, liberty, freedom, charity, self respect and respect for others. It is time. So, rejoice in the spirit of Decadence, then plan on bringing in the Kingdom of God in the way envisioned by that marginalized Rabbi Jesus the Galilean. It will be a wonderful gift to the larger community. Be at peace brothers and sisters for you are “The Beloved Community.”

Saints & Sisters: Nuns With Guns In Old New Orleans at NOCCA’s Kirschman Art Space Ren French seems to have been born about 75 years too late. This local writer has a clear affinity and admiration for radio’s Golden Age. In his radio-style detective series Clifton Monroe Chronicles seen in 2012 and 2013, it was put to general good use. In the current “new old time radio show” Saints & Sisters: Nuns With Guns In Old New Orleans, however, we get a grindhouse gumbo of action-adventure, blood’n’guts, and priest-on-nun sex that’s more weird than witty. There’s a story of sorts involving offspring of Jesse James, the Ursuline Convent, a secret society dedicated to protecting New Orleans, and a power-crazed Mother Superior. French sprinkles this liberally with double entendres with an especial fondness for “cock,” “coq,””meat” and even “kielbasa.” Subtle it ain’t. Like Clifton Monroe, Saints & Sisters is wellconstructed. French knows how to build to climaxes, keep the action going, and create vivid characters, plus he includes silly, tongue-in-cheek commercials. But, even more so than with Clifton Monroe, French conflates two time periods with confusing results. That the radio show that’s being performed is set at the height of Prohibition is fine and clear. But what of the play itself? I’m not a prude, but if set in the 1930’s or ’40s, some of the cusswords used in the script would never be heard on the radio, and a reference to a guy’s boyfriend would be absurd. Yet if it takes place in the present, or some recent time, as it seems to be, then the vintage costumes seem [continued on 52]

wear it out by Johnny Joseph Delgadillo, Postulant Tazia Balls (Big Easy Sisters) E-mail: cuttingedgediva@yahoo.com

Meet Andi Eaton This issue I have decided to once again introduce you all to another mover and shaker in the New Orleans fashion arena. She is a true one of a kind. From having her fashion blog, Oui We, to styling many of the cities wewl known names and being one of the CoFounders of NOLA Fashion Week this fashionista is far from being done on her creative mission in the world of fashion in New Orleans. So here we go. Into the mind of one hell of a creative talent in New Orleans. LGBT New Orleans meet Andi Eaton/Nickens. Andi meet LGBT New Orleans. I decided to write all about Andi one evening last week as I was exploring my way through that ever so time consuming web site, Facebook, and came across a post she had made. It was the cover of her latest venture. Yes it was a photo of the cover of her new book New Orleans Style. At first I didn’t know if it was a new fashion

trodding the boards... from 42 peculiar and unnecessary. Either way, having a pregnant character drinking while the show is on the air comes off as doubly strange. And the characterizations of Blacks and Latinos in some of the commercials is downright cringeworthy. As the cartoonishness builds, French apparently decided that anything could go and so tosses Canadian accents and I Love Lucy references into the mix. Nothing wrong with either of them, but here it comes off as random rather than organic parts of a whole. A few less things in the pot might’ve made for a tastier stew. In addition to bringing the script’s sound effects to inventive life, Director Harold Gervais delivers a generally smooth, well-paced production that showcases the ridiculousness of French’s 22 characters, all portrayed by a cast of six. He could’ve toned some of it down, however; both Kerry Cahill and Matt Standley give in to yelling some of their lines making them occasionally difficult to understand. Their scene of vigorous sex while standing at side-by-side microphones, though, is a hoot. As the Narrator, Tony Bentley provides a sonorous voice; as Pappy, a homespun one. Jake Bartush amuses in a variety of roles, male and female. Jessica and Jasmine, the sharpshooting sisters from LaPlace given to Robin Hood-like escapades, are en-

magazine that she was spear heading or a book, so I asked. She responded promptly, and right away I knew I had to cover this along with her many other accomplishments in fashion here in New Orleans. I will be honest. I was reading an email she sent me where I had asked her a bunch of questions and she had supplied some wonderful answers. [continued on 54] gagingly played by Angela Jo and Cammie West, respectively, with West relishing Jasmine’s drinkin’n’sexin’. Yet there seems to be some rivalry going on between the radio actresses qua radio actresses that is never fully developed. In fact, no background information is ever given about any of the actors playing the characters in the two episodes of the Saints & Sisters radio serial that we see. French, of course, can write whatever he wants, but he might have put his talents to better use by giving us just one wacky episode interspersed with “real-life behind-thescenes” dramedy rather than two whole episodes. Still, if all you’re looking for is some subversive summertime zaniness, there are worse ways to spend a couple of hours than with the outrageous Sisters. [Note: While all of Saints & Sisters’s publicity says that it’s performed in NOCCA’s Kirschman Art Space, I believe its actual location is NOCCA’s Nims Black Box Theatre.]

Coming Soon Ah, August, that month when all the boardtrodders, well, most of them, are either recharging their batteries or busily rehearsing productions that will be debuted after Labor Day. Of course, Southern Decadence will soon be offering a performance art spectacle that everyone from the Marquis de Sade to Karen Finlay can ap-

preciate. But for those looking for a more subdued aesthetic experience, here are some upcoming possibilities starting with a smorgasbord’s worth of possibilities. The sixth annual arts celebration known as Culture Collision will be held at The National WWII Museum’s U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center on Wednesday, August 27. With over 50 local nonprofit visual and performing arts organizations participating, it’s an excellent—and free!—opportunity to pick up brochures and find out about all their season schedules. Reading this after the 27th? Then go to www.culturenola.org for links to all the groups taking part. What promises to be one of the highlights of the season is the local premiere of Chris Durang’s Tony Awardwinning play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at Le Petit Theatre. Reviewing the Broadway production last year, I felt it was Durang’s “best, funniest and most moving play yet.” Riffing on Chekhov, Vanya and Sonia are siblings, though she was adopted, who stayed at home to look after their elderly parents while Masha went off and became a movie star. Masha has now returned home with her new boy toy and threats to sell the family home. Complications ensue, both hilarious and touching, as coffee cups fly and Maggie Smith playing the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs puts in a guest appearance. Of course, Broadway had David Hyde Pierce as Vanya and Sigourney Weaver as Masha but with a cast that includes Martin Covert, Idella Johnson and Cassie Worley, and direction by Ron Gural, Le Petit’s Vanya should supply just as much fun during its September 5-20 run. Serving as Le Petit’s annual “Lagniappe” production, Nine Lives, Paul Sanchez’s musical adaptation of Dan Baum’s book, returns August 27 through 29 to commemorate the 9th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Tony Award-winner (Assassins), TV actor (The Good Wife) and Treme resident Michael Cerveris heads up a cast that also features Sanchez, trumpeter Shamarr Allen, and Bryan (Mad Men) Batt, among others in this mosaic of personal stories of a diverse selection of New Orleanians across the forty years between Hurricanes Betsy and Katrina. A diverse selection of other types of characters can be found in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest which The NOLA Project will be presenting at NOCCA’s Nims Black Box Theatre September 4-21. Last seen here eleven years ago at True Brew in a production that was honored with three Ambie Awards, it’s doubtful that Cuckoo’s Nest, with its firm stand against mindless, petty and unyielding authority, will be any less relevant today. Mark Routhier directs an ensemble that’s headed by Alex Wallace as that

ultimate rebel Randle McMurphy and Amy Alvarez as the autocratic Nurse Ratched plus Michael Aaron Santos, A.J. Allegra, James Bartelle, Mike Harkins, Keith Claverie, Kaitlyn McQuin Heckel, Natalie Boyd, Levi Hood, Sam Dudley, Richard A. Pomes, Michael P. Sullivan, Kyle Daigrepont, Kali Russell and Eric Charleston. In search of classic musicals? Then head to Slidell where that tale of shtetl life Fiddler On the Roof continues its run at Slidell Little Theatre through September 7, and the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar appears at Cutting Edge Theater August 29 through September 19. Up on the North Shore at Playmakers Covington from September 5 to 21, will be The Trip to Bountiful, Horton Foote’s poignant story of Mrs. Watts, an aging widow living with her son and daughter-in-law in a threeroom flat in Houston, who fears that her presence may be an imposition on others, and chafes under the watchful eye of her high-strung daughter-in-law. Mrs. Watts, originally portrayed on television and Broadway by Lillian Gish and subsequently by Geraldine Page on film in her Oscar-winning turn, and Cicely Tyson who won a Tony in last year’s Broadway revival, imagines that if she can return to her old home in the small town of Bountiful, she will regain her strength, dignity and peace of mind. So she runs away, but when she reaches a bus station on the last part of her trip, she encounters a sheriff whom her son and daughter-in-law put on her trail. The sheriff kindly allows her to complete the final stage of her journey, and she proceeds to Bountiful to make a simple pilgrimage to the scene of her old home. Derek Thrush directs. And last but not least, perfectly timed for Decadence, something I am SO looking forward to, is Anaïs St. John’s Last Dance...A Tribute to Donna Summer at The Allways Theatre on August 29 and 30 at 8pm. St. John has so far presented two terrific cabarets honoring classic performers, Lola Falana, Showgirl: The First Lady of Vegas in 2013, and A Purrfect Evening: The Songs of Eartha Kitt, her 2009 Ambie Awardwinner for Uniquest Theatrical Experience. With its all-star band including Mike Esneault, Mark Brooks, Don Vappie, Charlie Kohlymeyer, Romy Kaye, and Jayna Morgan Decuers, Last Dance promises to take an audience back to the days when Disco reigned supreme and Donna was the Queen. I suspect St. John will work hard for the money and, heaven knows, she’s some hot stuff, so if you ask “Could it be magic?”, I’ll just answer “Enough is enough, all you bad girls just get over to the Allways where we’ll dim all the lights and watch Anaïs do her Donna thing.” ‘Nuff said.

spotlight feature Chevron NO/AIDS WALK Marks 25 Years of Walking for a Cure The largest annual HIV/AIDS awareness event in Louisiana has announced the date of its 25th Anniversary WALK. Thousands of individual walkers and corporate and community teams will gather on Sunday, September 21 between 8 and 10am to launch the WALK beneath the majestic oaks of Audubon Park. The route will follow its traditional path through Uptown New Orleans, returning to a festival atmosphere on the grounds of the park.

wear it out... from 52 As I was reading it on my phone, wouldn’t you know it, my phone decided to drop and erase the email leaving me with what I could remember to write this article with. LOL! I think I retained enough to give her due justice. Anyway... I first learned of Andi because of her work with Nicholas Landry in putting together NOLA Fashion Week. I have since heard a great deal of good things about this wonderful woman from people around the city. Andi went to college at North Carolina State University where she studied communications. She made her way to New Orleans via Atlanta where she lived for a bit before deciding this was the place to be. The one place where she saw things happening. Exciting things. A place where her creative juices could flow, and the sometimes scary job that she was holding down at the time would be a thing of the past, and her passion for fashion would become her future. Since she has moved here she has started here fashion blog Oui We and has become a designer at Hazel & Florage, styled for and collaborated with some of the cities most notable magazines including SCENE, started one of the cities most highly rated fashion productions NOLA Fashion Week and now has a new book coming out. WHAT WHAT!!!!!!? A book! I mean this diva doesn’t stop. Bam to the BAM BAM! Let’s get to this book, New Orleans Style. Yes HUNTIES! New Orleans Style. If there is a single person other than myself I trust giving style advice and writing about it in this city it is Andi. With her list of accomplishments this book is sure to be a great addition to those table top books full of good New Orleans tidbits and history that will make a great read for those who are guest to our homes in the city we love. She told me in one of her answers that this city is a wonderful melting pot of cultures. From the French Couturiers to the Spanish flair and the soul of the Creole touch this city has much to desire when it comes to fashion. With her knowledge of the industry and what she has done with it mixing those together and creating this book have peeked my interest in wanting a copy for myself. She shared with me that the idea came about one night

while eating dinner with her husband. It was just an idea, and out of the blue the next day a publishing company contacted her asking her to write a book about style in New Orleans. Never mentioned a word to a soul about the idea she had at that dinner with her husband which told her and tells me that this was something that the FASHION GODS wanted to happen, not just for her but for New Orleans. Another mark for New Orleans in the fashion world. I asked Andi if there will be a release party and she said that there will be more than one. With this being said I will keep you all posted because I am sure a few fabulous drag queens will be needed to brighten the rooms up. Isn’t that how it always works in New Orleans? LOL! She also told me that the book will be available in most every retailer that sells books and online. You will also be able to purchase it through her fashion blog Oui We. Oh lord I truly feel that this book is going to be a big fashion hit and something we should all consider having as a interesting read or a beautiful table topper. Pictured here is a photo of the cover which I find historical and fun. Showing how a certain look from the past has been translated and updated to today's fashion looks. I am more than positive that the rest of the book will be fun like this.

So triple dipple queen fashionista snaps to Andi Eaton/Nickens for being a fabulously creative diva in our New Orleans fashion scene. You better work miss thang. I can’t wait to see what else you do within the next few years. As for all of you LGBT Fashionistas. Be thinking of what to wear to one of these release parties. We must represent people. BAM BAM that! This has been my bi-weekly fashion announcement brought to you by Me, Me and some more ME. Toodles.

The event benefits NO/AIDS Task Force, one of the oldest and largest HIV/AIDS organizations in the Gulf South, which will soon be expanding its community health initiatives through CrescentCare Health and Wellness Centers. The WALK is sponsored by Chevron, with presenting sponsors Avita Drugs and Shell. To mark 25 years of walking for a cure, walkers and donors will gather 8am for festivities and registration. The WALK kicks off at 10am with a second line to mark the anniversary and will proceed along a 45-minute route down Magazine Street to Napoleon Avenue and Prytania Street and then back into Audubon Park. Activities include water and doggie stops for pets, a children’s tent with special activities and food and drinks provided by Louisiana Pizza Kitchen Uptown. Live music and other entertainments are also provided, including a special appearance by the 610 Stompers and the Sirens of New Orleans. All funds raised at the Chevron NO/ AIDS WALK benefit men, women and families who are affected by HIV/AIDS: those served by NO/AIDS, as well as other programs and services through the “Walk Share Program.” Over 80 cents of every dollar goes directly to helping someone affected by the disease. Teams and individuals can register for free in advance by visiting www.noaidswalk.com or by calling 504.821.2601, ext. 256. By registering online, participants have access to easyto-use fundraising tools to help achieve particular goals. “The Chevron NO/AIDS WALK is our largest fundraiser of the year, and the funds it raises allow us to continue providing outstanding care for those New Orleans neighbors affected by HIV/AIDS,” said Noel Twilbeck, CEO of NO/AIDS Task Force. “This is a banner year for NO/AIDS as we grow into a multi-community health and wellness provider, CrescentCare. This growth strategy is designed to enhance and expand our focus on HIV/ AIDS, which will continue to grow under NO/AIDS, now a specialized division of CrescentCare. The WALK is a critical part of funding the many programs that focus on HIV prevention, care, treatment and support.” For more than 30 years, NO/AIDS Task Force has been providing hope,

care and compassion to thousands of men, women and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Southeast Louisiana. The Task Force acknowledges that the complications of HIV-disease are not just physical, but mental, emotional and social as well. We offer a full spectrum of care at low to no cost, including services such as: an HIV medical clinic, food pantry, home delivered meals, housing, mental health, medication support and many others. NO/AIDS also reaches over 20,000 each year through HIV prevention education efforts. For more information, please visit http:// www.noaidstaskforce.org or call 504.821.2601 ext. 218.

NOLA Leather to Geaux Just when one thinks New Orleans couldn’t possibly be more decadent, “NOLA Leather to Geaux” comes along. Yes, the news you’ve been hearing that a “real” leather run is returning to this great city is true. Coming soon, “NOLA Leather to Geaux” will launch for the first time the weekend of October 17 – 19. It will be a leather weekend where leather folk will have the unique experience of being out and about in this fun-loving and permissive city. "We will be drinking and mingling in the streets with our 'to go' cups in hand as well as frolicking in the dark spaces in our bars, all the while dressed in our leather and/or gear." The weekend’s host hotel is the Olde Town Inn, which is only one block from one of the great leather bars in New Orleans: the Phoenix Bar with its dimly lit Eagle upstairs. "We will have the entire hotel, which is under new management and recently renovated, reserved for our leather family with a special room rate starting at just $89." There are only 36 rooms available so they will sell out fast. To make your reservation for that weekend, please call the Olde Town Inn at 1.800.209.9408 or 504.949.5815 and make sure to mention that you are part of the NOLA Leather to Geaux event. You may also contact Jacques Boutte, the General Manager at gm@oldetowninn.com to discuss your accommodation needs. The list of events is still growing but the $75 weekend package ($100 after September 19) will include happy hour [continued on 56]
