“How the Greed of an Insurance Company Almost Killed John East” 2014 was another stellar year in the long struggle for LGBT equality. Same-sex marriage became a reality in twenty states, Michael Sam became the first openly gay football player drafted into the NFL, and President Obama expanded federal employment protections to include gender identity. One of the least recognized yet most significant victories involved health insurance for those living with HIV, and it originated in New Orleans. In January, 2014, John East received terrible news. His caseworker at the NO/ AIDS Task Force called to inform him that his insurance company, Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Louisiana, would no longer accept payments from third parties. The news devastated East because without insurance, his HIV and other medicines would cost him over $6,000 a month. East had faithfully paid monthly payments to Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Louisiana since 1985, almost 30 years. In 2009, East’s premiums became unaffordable when they were raised to $650 a month. On the day his insurance was set to expire, he qualified for insurance subsidies from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. East breathed a sigh of relief. He was not going to die for lack of medication. The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program was established in 1990 and works with local and state governments and community based organizations, such as the NO/ AIDS Task Force, to provide services to an estimated 536,000 people each year who do not have sufficient health care coverage or financial resources to cope with HIV disease. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Without insurance, East’s HIV medicines would have cost over $2,000 per month; combined with his other non-HIV medicines, East would have had to pay out of pocket over $4,000 per month for his medication. East’s financial crisis would not have been as dire if Republican Governor Bobby Jindal had not rejected $1.65 billion, funds offered to the state as part of the Medicaid expansion provided for in the Affordable Care Act (Obama-Care). When Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Louisiana announced they would no longer accept third party payments, Lambda Legal, a national advocacy group for LGBT rights, contacted East asked him if he would be willing to be the chief litigant in a class action lawsuit against Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Louisiana and two other insurance companies (Louisiana Health Cooperative and Vantage Health Plan). East was reluctant at first but ultimately agreed. Recalling his decision to participate in the lawsuit, East observes, “Health trumps privacy.” Lambda Legal initially sent the three health insurance companies a letter urging them to reverse their policy of not accepting third party payments. When the three insurance companies ignored the letter, Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit in United States District Court, Middle District of Louisiana on February 20, 2014, against the insurance companies on behalf of East and other low income Louisianans living with

HIV and won an emergency injunction to force the companies to accept the premiums until the case was settled. The Louisiana case caused the Federal Government to issue a regulation that insurance companies nation-wide accept payments from the Ryan White Fund. When the lawsuit was announced, East said publicly, “No one should be made to choose between medications and keeping a roof over your head and food on the table . . . It is unconscionable, despicable and a humanitarian atrocity that Blue Cross and other insurance companies are dumping policy holders with HIV.” Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Louisiana officials claimed they decided to stop accepting third party payments in an effort to reduce fraud but could produce no evidence of fraud with regard to the Ryan White Fund payments. Noel Twilbeck, CEO of the NO/AIDS Task Force sums up the case’s significance by stating, “John’s willingness to share his story enabled Lambda Legal to draw great attention to unfair and harmful practices of BC/BS (and possibly other insurance carriers). If the unjust insurance practices had not been challenged, the trickle-down effect of other carriers following them could have meant that hundreds of individuals who needed assistance with premium payments in Louisiana would have been unable to access Marketplace policies.” John East grew up in McComb, Mississippi, and has lived in New Orleans since 1977. He is a Navy Veteran and has worked in the medical industry for 30 years. Michael Callais, his partner of 14 years, died in 1991 of complications from AIDS, as did East’s little brother. East managed the food bank at the NO/AIDS Task Force in 1988 and 1989. Lambda Legal was founded in 1973. It won the nation’s first HIV/AIDS discrimination case in 1983 (People v. West 12 Tenants Corp.). Lambda Legal has a long history of forcing insurance companies to cover HIV treatments and it has also assisted in establishing privacy rights for people living with HIV.

Bartender of the Month Once again it’s time for the holidays, which mean spending more time with the family, maneuvering office holiday parties and dealing with out of town guests. So most people more than ever need a friendly face and a stiff drink, hence why I have chosen Ray Conrad at Oz as my bartender for the month of December. Armed with an exuberant personality and wonderful smile, Ray is a charming addition to the staff.

Bartender of the Month Ray Conrad @ Oz Even though he is fairly new to the bar, Ray greets you immediately when you enter the bar (or depending the night his section of the bar) and if you are regular quick to get your usual. He maintains a professional aura which meshes agreeably with his wit and natural boy-next-door looks. Oz is definitely one of the busiest bars in the city and Ray easily handles the task of keeping his clientele happy. He can maneuver a crowded bar with agility never wavering from his festive attitude. Keeping the customers happy and cocktailed is a bartender’s major job description, outside of actually knowing how to make drinks. From shots to more creative concoctions, he can make the gamut. Ray is also a hard worker; I even have seen him working another one of his jobs. I think his hospitality is what shines through most. He is eager to make sure everyone at his bar is having a good time. With superior service, it is no surprise why he is a patron favorite. So take the time to visit Ray when you want to get away from the madness of the season. Oz is located at 800 Bourbon Street.

Hot Happenings Below is a listing a few of the noteworthy events coming up. Check them out, there is sure to be something in here to suit your fancy.

Party Down So this portion of my column may is not as voluminous at it usually is since I spent most of the last two weeks in Hawaii (that Ambush on the Road will come later). But the time I did spend in NOLA was full of parties and events starting with a little gathering at Mardi Gras World on Tuesday hosted by the Ralph Brennan group to show off their outside catering capabilities. For those having events and weddings here, it is great to see that you can get your favorite restaurants now to cater your special occasion. Ralph Brennan did an outstanding job on the cuisine and Mardi Gras World’s Mansion Room was an ideal place for them to show off to the hospitality industry. The following day, I went to the opening of the new Fro Yo Café on Canal Street. Now I know it may seem like I will go to the opening of an envelope (I kind of will), but this wonderful establishment has introduced a new item that is perfect for our city, the King Cake Croissant. It is a perfect blend of buttery delight with a hint of sweetness and a great idea to bring a dozen or so to your next friend’s party. Of course they also have their normal offerings of yogurts and smoothies with a large array of toppings. This place is definitely worth trying out. Next I went to Café Adelaide who was celebrating the completion of their renovations. The entire restaurant received a shot of energy in the form of new artwork, furniture and carpeting. Their improvements may seem slight, but they combine nicely with the already award winning food to give diners the perfect dining experience. On Thursday, I tried a great new bar located in the lower Garden District with some clients, the Courtyard Brewery located on Erato Street. This brew pub has a nice selection of beers on tap and has just started their own brewing. The place is quickly becoming a hot spot in the area and for those beer lovers, the staff and owners are knowledgeable and willing to talk about all their selections. I now make the leap to the next Friday (Hawaii was in between) when I landed and like a good supporter of the gay krewes, I fought my jet lag and participated in Petronius’ American Horror Story event. With the wonderful aid of Barbara Ella, we brought back Madame LaLaurie and the Supreme from last year’s Halloween and nailed the costume contest. It was a fun evening with an entertaining show featuring an entire new slate of performers from out of town. Congrats to the krewe for keeping their events fresh and light. Saturday was all about the house parties. It seems that people were in the mood for Pre-Thanksgiving celebrating before the big turkey day when we all run off to be with our families at all corners of the globe. My friends and I started the night at Scott Spivey and John Pfeifer’s house in MidCity for their Friendsgiving party. They had a full holiday feast including candied yams and turkey. Then we went to my friend Brian Lagerquist’s home for another soiree Uptown. There was again more food and flowing libations. This is where I discovered the most fantastic party game ever called Head’s Up. This is a downloaded

app that will keep you playing for hours. It’s is an amped up guessing game that was so much fun, we drained three phones batteries playing it. Ending my two weeks on Sunday, I went to Amon-Ra’s Girls Gone Broadway event at Harrah’s Theatre. What a night of fanciful entertainment as the members of the krewe and invited guests did showstopping numbers to some of Broadway’s biggest shows. It was dinner theatre at its best (and the food was delectable). Congratulations to all involved in putting on this memorable night. Until next time, get ready to don your gay apparel because this is going to be one hell of a holiday season.

Ambush On The Road: Vegas Baby! Let me begin this section by saying three simple words. I LOVE VEGAS! OMG, it has been several years since I have been to Sin City and boy has it changed. Screw the days when they promoted a family friendly atmosphere (which there are things for kids to do there), but honestly parents, don’t you think there is a better kid conducive places to take Junior, ever heard of Disneyworld. But I digress. Las Vegas has become a sensual explosion of pleasures from top restaurants with the best chefs in the country, Broadway shows, incredible entertainers, risqué delights, unbelievable clubs and of course gambling. I arrived in Vegas on Sunday morning at 8:30am and took a cab to my hotel, The Mirage. The Mirage opened in 1989 and to me is Old School Vegas rejuvenated at its best. It is centrally located on the strip and has a more Polynesian flavor in décor. Since my room was not quite ready, I had a quick bite at the poolside restaurant Paradise Café. In Vegas, the pool scene is the social scene, from the over the top cabanas to the private, exclusive pools to Bare Pool Lounge, an adultsonly playground featuring Euro-style bathing, full-service bar, poolside menu, live DJs spinning and the hottest staff in Las Vegas. Seriously, pool life here brings sexy back to a new level. After breakfast, I checked in which was a marvel in itself mainly because they have the most breathtaking 20,000-gallon saltwater aquarium behind the front counter. This indoor coral reef is home to approximately 450 fish from 85 different species which include angelfish, puffer fish, tangs, eels and other exotic sea creatures. My room was incredibly nice and had a perfect view of the Volcano which is their signature attraction. This iconic front yard monument has tall explosions, fireballs and a driving rock soundtrack. It goes off every night starting at 6pm and is every ½ hour after that until 11pm. It is one of the city’s many cool free shows. I decided to explore the casino, so I started by going to the Siegfried and Roy Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. From 1990 through 2003, The Mirage was the venue for the Siegfried & Roy show. These two gentlemen were showmen who combined magic and the use of wild animals. Their show sadly closed in 2003 after performer Roy Horn was attacked and injured by one of the white tigers used in the show. Now they have this incredible respite from the madness of the strip. The Secret Garden boast white lions and tigers, leop-

book review A Gathering Storm by Frank Perez Email: f.perez@sbcglobal.net Jameson Currier. A Gathering Storm. Chelsea Station Editions, 2014. ISBN: 978-1-937627-20-1. 354 pages. $20.00. Although A Gathering Storm is Jameson Currier’s latest novel to be published, it was actually written fifteen years ago in the aftermath of the Matthew Shepard murder. Drawing inspiration from that case and other hate crimes that followed, Currier has written a novel about a hate crime that occurs in a small college town somewhere in the American South. Much has been written about the Matthew Shepard case, and it was covered extensively in the media, but Currier observes in the novel’s introduction, “I felt what was missing from the news were the details and stories of the individuals involved—the crime was analyzed and politicized but oddly not humanized.” In A Gathering Storm, Currier successfully humanizes not only the victim of a hate crime, but also the assailants, as well as the community in which the crime occurs. Written in the present tense from the perspectives of several people involved, the novel effectively explores not only the emotional nature of a hate crime, but also its causes and consequences—and how we as both individuals and as communities process such tragedies. The narrative structure of the novel is not linear, but rather circular and oscillates both in time and various characters’ perspective. Syntactically, the sentences are short and choppy (a departure for Currier) and serve to convey a tone of fragmentation. This book is not an easy read but it is a worthwhile read. It is a thoughtful exploration of the emotional complexities of homophobia and a reverent tribute to the victims of hate crimes. Despite its grim subject, the novel does manage to strike hopeful notes. Jameson Currier is the author of six novels: Where the Rainbow Ends, nominated for a Lambda Literary award, The

under the gaydar ...from 10 ards and now three new white lion cubs: Madiba, Timba-Masai and Freedom. I got to enjoy these playful guys first hand as they frolicked with their handlers, so cute. Afterwards I enjoyed the bottlenose dolphin show. After sight-seeing, next was shopping and in case you did not know; Vegas has everything and it is supersized. I started at the Kardashian Khaos store in The Mirage, sorry, yes I had to see what the queens of vapidity were selling and I am glad to say I hit a steal, you buy over $20 of merchandise and I received a complimentary Khloe Kardashian beach towel, I will cherish it forever. Next I went to the Forum Shops next door at Caesar’s Palace. Seriously this place is a shopping paradise. The shopping gods nodded and said let there be Cartier, Gucci and Jimmy Choo. Hell the H & M is a three story architectural wonder. And speaking of the gods, another free show is The Fall of Atlantis Show which highlights sibling rivalry at its fiercest. There

Wolf at the Door, The Third Buddha, What Comes Around, The Forever Marathon, and A Gathering Storm; and four collections of short fiction: Dancing on the Moon; Desire, Lust, Passion, Sex; Still Dancing: New and Selected Stories; and The Haunted Heart and Other Tales, which was awarded a Black Quill Award for Best Dark Genre Fiction Collection. Currier’s short fiction has appeared in many literary magazines and Web sites. His AIDS-themed short stories have also been translated into French by Anne-Laure Hubert and published as Les Fantômes. His reviews, essays, interviews, and articles on AIDS and gay culture have been published in many national and local publications. In 2010 he founded Chelsea Station Editions, an independent press devoted to gay literature. Books published by the press have been honored by the Lambda Literary Foundation, the American Library Association GLBTRT Roundtable, the Saints and Sinners Literary Festival, the Gaylactic Spectrum Awards Foundation, and the Rainbow Book Awards. In 2011, Currier launched the literary magazine Chelsea Station, which has published the works of more than a hundred writers and in 2014 re-launched the magazine as an online literary site. Jameson Currier is a member of the Board of Directors of the Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation, a recipient of a fellowship from New York Foundation for the Arts, and has been a judge for many literary competitions. He currently resides in New York. is roaring fires, splashing waters and lots of thunderous sounds topped with a horrific beast that pops out at the end. This marvelous 11-minute show boasts dramatic, mind-blowing special effects, neon lights and the surrounding fountains. Storyline is simplistic, witness the fall of Atlantis reenacted by 9-foot-tall lifelike animatronic statues (and a scary 20-foot winged dragon) costumed in armor and leather by the legendary Hollywood blacksmith company Sword & Stone. The tale begins with King Atlas deciding whether his son or daughter should take over in ruling Atlantis. Greed and haughtiness get the better of the two as they brag about how one’s ability is better than the other. The sister waves her staff and shows off her water power. On the flip side, the brother waves his torch and bursts of flames erupt all around him. The family learns the ultimate lesson — let’s just say it doesn’t result in a “time-out.” The decision falls out of the father’s hands and the other gods show their wrath with the Fall of Atlantis. A terrifying beast with wings appears from behind Atlas’ throne and watches the destruction of Atlantis. This is one incredible show and just a sample of the many free things there are to see and do in Vegas. That night I went to dinner with some colleagues at Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen and Bar located at the Quad. This place was over the top and his food was aweinspiring, I have never seen burgers quite like his. His tatted turkey burger and macaroni and cheese burger were to die for. And talk about oversized, the burgers are so big they fill up an entire plate and you need another one just for the sides. Don’t even get me started on dessert, their mountain of

chocolate mint chip ice cream was so big, that a table of six could not put a dent into it. After dinner we explored the Quad area and enjoyed the live entertainers, my favorite was the hot cowboys and Chippendale Dancers you could pose with for pictures. Good lord, they have everything there. I came back to the hotel and the bar inside the Mirage, Revolution was having Gay Night entitled Revo Sunday. Seems the gay scene shifts from club to club on the strip depending on the night of the week and as luck would have it, it was in my hotel on Sunday, yeah me! Revolution is a pretty creatively designed bar styled after the Cirque du Soleil’s Beatle’s Love. After a few cocktails, I turned in for the night. One thing is cocktails in Vegas are expensive. I will never complain about drink prices in New Orleans when the average drink there is about $12. I was in Las Vegas for the IMEX show which is a meetings industry trade show. I was part of the New Orleans CVB booth promoting the city to meeting planners worldwide. There were booths of cities from around the globe from London to Brazil, Japan to Cleveland and everywhere in between. This is truly a global experience and one I was truly in awe to be a part of. Monday I was in sales training classes all day. That evening we started with a small reception at the Paradise Café in The Mirage then we were off to the Light nightclub in Mandalay Bay for a private party. Now this is where Vegas shines the most at is their nightlife. Light is a technically charged experience that combines elements of Cirque with the cutting edge music and visuals on their Led screens that cover almost the entire space. Guests danced and drank as accomplished aerialists performed above our heads. Then after the event, we took the party upstairs to the House of Blues Foundation Room (thank goodness I am a member) which has a spectacular view of the entire strip. We continued our dance party to the wee hours of the morning. On returning to my hotel, I briefly gambled before bed. Tuesday was the start of the trade show which is an intense three days of appointments meeting with people trying to convince them to come to our wonderful city with their groups. That night I started at the Mirage with dinner at one of my favorite restaurants I tried when I was there, Japonais. This eatery is described as the balance of the East meshes with the exuberance of the West. Japonais is one of those memorable dining excursions that you talk about years after. From the chic décor to the deliciously imaginative dishes, this place was innovative. It is a hip, fresh and had one of the best dishes I have ever eaten in my life tempura Brussel sprouts. The Vegas restaurant (there is one in Chicago and New York) has garnered rave reviews such as Condé Nast Traveler – “Top 66 Restaurants in The World.” After dinner we went to the Bellagio for another private party at The Bank. This swanky, upscale hot-spot was once again tailored for guests. Tonight started with a meeting industry’s version of American Idol followed by dancing once again to the wee hours of morn. Tuesday was another day of meetings then off to a cocktail reception hosted by AVW Resorts at Table 10, an Emeril’s restaurant. Seem to never be able to completely get away from NOLA. After I went to see the Broadway hit Million Dollar Quartet at Harrah’s. This is a fun musical tribute

show featuring Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. I followed the show up with a quick dinner at Carnegie Deli at The Mirage, just like I remember it in New York. I finished the evening at one of the final private parties at the Drais Nightclub and Beach Club at the Cromwell Hotel. I have no other word to describe this place than sexy. I mean this club is like you have seen in the movies. You take an elevator up to the space and enter in the nightclub area. Large velvet red curtains three stories tall were pulled open leading you from the huge dance floor area to the Beach Club that had cabanas with infinity hot tubs in them. Because yes at a pool, you need a hot tub in your cabana. There were two huge pools each with a dance floor in it. All the pools in Vegas have DJs spinning at them it seems. From any spot in the outdoor area which had different levels, the view was astounding. Inside an eight foot LED disco style bar would lower and spin on above your head on the dance floor. At several points during the night a confetti launcher would drop tons of white confetti on the dancers, then when it touched the floor air jets from below would shoot it back up creating a eddying effect like you were dancing in a snow globe. Now this is mindblowing fun. Stripper poles were all over the place with dancers and guests were encouraged to stand on the banquets and dance. I have been to many nightclubs in my day both in the US and abroad and I have to say that this is probably rates as one of my top three. Simply marvelous night. On Wednesday, I spent half a day at the trade show before grabbing a bite at California Pizza Kitchen and heading out to the airport. And this is where Vegas reels you in, never play at the airport, you will always loose. This is where they need to get their money back before you depart, drain your last dollar out of you. So for those who have yet to get to Las Vegas, put it on your bucket list, there is truly something there for everybody. Now where is my next Ambush on the road, grab a lei, because I am Hawaii bound. Stay tuned.

To Quote A Queen Tis’ the season to be jolly. In honor of the yuletide month, I thought the next two issues would be a great time to share with you some quotes about this lovely holiday season. We will stray slightly from my format since not all these quotes are from people in the gay community. So relax, grab a glass of spiked eggnog and enjoy. “The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.” – George Carlin “Nothing says holidays, like a cheese log.” – Ellen DeGeneres “The Supreme Court has ruled that they cannot have a nativity scene in Washington, D.C. This wasn’t for any religious reasons. They couldn’t find three wise men and a virgin.” – Jay Leno “I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph.” – Shirley Temple “I’ve been giving back since I was a teen, handing out turkeys at Thanksgiving and handing out toys at toys drives for Christmas. It’s very important to give back as a youth. It’s as simple as helping an old lady across the street or giving up your seat on the bus for someone who is pregnant.” – Queen Latifah

“The Return of the Gutter Punks” Like a recurrent outbreak of herpes sores, the gutter punks have returned. Every October they descend upon New Orleans, bringing with them bad attitudes, aggressive behavior, malnourished dogs, and foul stenches. We’ve always had to contend with them but the general consensus is that this year they are worse than ever. Something has to be done about this scourge. Anyone who lives in, works in or visits the French Quarter is familiar with the problem. The gutter punks travel in packs and tend to cluster around stoops, intersections, and neutral grounds. Lower Decatur Street is a one of their favorite nesting grounds but infestations of them can be found all over the Vieux Carre. There are also extensive colonies of gutter punks in the Marigny and Bywater and most recently, they have spread to Mid-City. Once they decide on a location in which to fester, they become stubbornly entrenched for hours upon a time, if not days. Anyone who has the misfortune of living or owning a business anywhere near these crusty encampments is doomed. Many people will cross the street to avoid them and their putrid body odor. The gutter punks obstruct sidewalks and aggressively panhandle. And they won’t take no for an answer. Sometimes they will actually follow pedestrians for a block and threaten violence if they are not given money. When it’s time for them to feed, they will often rummage through trash bins. Longtime Quarter resident Dick Dooley recalls recently seeing one digging through a trash can and tossing its inedible contents all over the street before finding some scraps at the bottom of the can and nonchalantly shuffling off down the street. And when Mother Nature calls, these gutter punks have no qualms whatsoever about urinating and defecating in the street, on the sidewalk, on historic buildings, or on people’s stoops.

Personal Horror Stories When I began researching this article, dozens of people offered their personal horror stories of their unpleasant encounters with the gutter punks. Space prohibits recounting all of their stories but here are a

few that are representative of the whole. On the night of November 11, Jyl Odom, a local tour guide was escorting a private, corporate tour group through Pirate’s Alley when she and the group witnessed a gutter punk “pulling up his trousers after leaving a huge steaming pile of shit on the Cabildo.” Shaye Hope, a bartender at Pirate’s Alley for almost ten years, recalls a recent run-in with the gutter punks on Halloween night: “Different groups of them passed by trying to bum money, cigarettes, and booze (seriously, asking for the “rest of the beer in your cup”!) from paying customers. I ran them off many times . . . I ran off two who passed by late that night for trying to pee on the Cathedral. At the Alley, I stop them from defecating and urinating on the Alley at least a couple of times a night.” That was not the first time Hope had to fight off the gutter punks. On the Saturday before Mardi Gras, one of the punks came into the bar and ordered a shot of tequila. When Hope realized he was clearly intoxicated, she politely offered him a glass of water. The punk then became belligerent and when Hope moved on to another customer, the punk “spit snack mix on my back, and then water in my face when I turned around. I told him to get out of my bar, he stood just outside, by the patrons who were sitting outside, and cursed me for all I was worth. He also cursed customers who tried to intercede on my behalf. I called the nonemergency police line. NOPD showed up a few minutes later, and the officer walked the guy down the alley. Moments later, the officer returns with the traveler, who is now behaving meekly, and the cop said the guy was sorry. That was it.” The manager of a restaurant on Decatur Street recalls a recent run-in: “There were six or seven of them eating outside on the sidewalk and I heard one of them say they needed some hot sauce. One of them stood up and hung around the open door. I suspected trouble and hung back watching. The guy darts into the restaurant and grabs a bottle of Tabasco off a table. Just as he did, I grabbed his arm and got the bottle out of his hand and then I shoved him out the door. That was about 9:30pm. Later when I got off around 2am, I was walking down the street when the guy spotted me and screamed, ‘That’s that asshole from the restaurant!’ I walked right up to him and

Thanksgiving: Part II We find ways to give thanks in many ways and last column we gave thanks for the various and random acts of giving and selflessness shown by the community. This column is for this issue a bully pulpit. It will be a shameless demonstration of journalistic prostitution. DO I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION YET?! There are several churches and organizations that serve our various communities. Grab one and make a commitment to it. There that is my ecumenical pitch for inclusive journalism. It now goes downhill from here on. Do you remember when I told you about Derrielle, the little girl who cried out and was profoundly disturbed by the death of another little girl called “Ray Ray?” She is one of three siblings. I would love to post a picture of them but I really can’t because I don’t have the permissions. I can’t use their real last name so we’ll call them the “Jones” family. The siblings are: Derrielle aged 10, Derri aged 11, and Roderick aged 13. During this BUYING GUIDE ISSUE I want you… yes YOU… to work with me in affording these kids a real break that will change their lives. Here is why: Derrielle is blossoming into a very talkative girl. She is almost obsessed with the murders in our city and indeed in her own neighborhood. Just a week or so ago a lady in the hood was murdered. She used to give the kids candy. Yes, this woman was

a drug user and rough around the edges. But to Derrielle, she was a candy lady. Derrielle lives around murder all the time. This dimpled beauty deserves better. She has made it quite clear she is afraid in her house. Darrielle has bright sparkling eyes, a sweet smile, and very cute dimples. She loves hugs and has a heart just waiting to give love and care – Derrielle, the compassionate one. 11 year old Derri is a forceful young lady turning into a forceful woman. Oh you’d not think that this skinny little girl with a big smile and slightly off kilter teeth would be such a presence! Last week she proclaimed that she was “Over it!” Over what? She wants to learn, and the chaos in her under-performing school won’t let her. She is teased by the children as being a “goody goody” and the teacher does nothing to support her desire to learn. It’s a combat zone. This wisp of child stood before the City Council two years ago and spoke for her children peers advocating for a park in the hood. The Council had already said it was going to zone the property for commercial development. After Derri spoke, the vote was taken and it was zoned for a park. She is a force for the future, she wants to be mayor, she deserves our support. Derri is forceful, focused, and self-motivated. Like all the Jones’ she has a smile that touches you in a second, but she is serious too – Derri, the driven one.

out front Delgado Community College to Offer a Class on New Orleans Queer History Delgado Community College has announced it will offer a course beginning in February called LGBT+ History of New Orleans. Rachelle Matherne, Assistant Director of Continuing Education at DCC says, “New Orleans is important to the LGBQT history of the U.S., as much as LGBQT residents and tourists are important to the fabric of New Orleans, both past and current. There is a void in local educational opportunities related to these topics, and this class definitely fills that void. I’m very excited to be offering this class through Delgado Community College.” The course is being developed and will be taught by local historian Frank Perez. Perez has written two books on the history of New Orleans, In Exile: The History and Lore Surrounding New Orleans Gay Culture and Its Oldest Gay Bar (with Jeff Palmquist) and Treasures of the Vieux Carre: Ten Self-Guided Walking Tours of the French Quarter. He also has a regular column in Ambush Magazine entitled “Moments in Gay New Orleans History” and currently teaches the Advanced Tour-Guiding course at DCC. A licensed tour guide, Perez has also developed a walking tour of gay New Orleans history. The LGBT+ History of New Orleans course is non-credit class and enrollment is open to the general public. According to Perez, there will be no assignments and no grades, “just a lot of fascinating history.” The format of the class will be lecture and discussion. The course will consist of seven two-hour sessions on Wednesday evenings at the DCC City Park Campus and run from February 25 to April 8. The cost of the course is $160.00.

investigative report ...from 24 his group and started screaming and waving my umbrella and they all scattered. I grew up on Burgundy. These kids think they own the place. This is our neighborhood.” Jan Burguieres, owner of Gallery Burguieres on Royal Street, had to call the police when a fight broke out among 20 of the gutter punks who had set up camp right in front of her gallery. “A girl had laid down in the entrance to the gallery and they all had pints of whiskey and two of them started arguing with each other. When I asked them to move along and settle it someplace else one of them said to me, ‘It’s just a domestic disturbance.’ When the police arrived they just shuffled them along. No one was arrested.” Two heroin addicts / male prostitutes who hang out in Jackson Square heard I was writing a story on the gutter punks and came to my office to make sure I included their perspective. They report on several occasions getting into fights with the gutter punks at the gutter punks’ provocation. One even had his backpack stolen from under his head as he was sleeping. This young man has been on the streets for a number of years and tells me he’s never seen it so bad. Mollie Wallace recounts, “A friend of mine took her parents (who we’re visiting) down to the river to admire the view . . . and saw a group of gutter punks shitting off the staircase that goes down to the water, laughing, shouting obscenities and flipping the bird to everyone that looked. Dangerous? Eh, no, but do we need to have our visitors subjected to that? Do we need to see that? Why are we defending these people?” The problem is not limited to the Quarter. Jeff Holmes and Jane Lutz live in St. Roch and have been battling the gutter punks for the last several years. According to Holmes, the St. Roch neighborhood is “gutter punk central” because of four reasons: the train tracks, the lack of police presence, numerous empty homes in which to squat, and the St. Roch Tavern, which apparently welcomes the crusties. Holmes

and Lutz have been assaulted by the gutter punks on no less than four occasions. On one occasion, a gutter punk threatened to stab Lutz when she refused to give money to him. Holmes and Lutz have also witnessed male gutter punks pulling out their penises and urinating in front of children, including their daughter. Holmes and Lutz, both tour guides, report being consistently harassed by the gutter punks while on tour. “This is not what our tourists need to see,” Holmes laments. “I am constantly asked by visitors on my tour after a brush with the gutter punks, ‘Why does the city allow this?’ And sadly, I have no answer.”

The City’s Response Despite numerous complaints to City Hall and the NOPD, the city has been essentially non-responsive to the problems caused by gutter punks. Councilwoman Stacey Head criticized them as a threat to tourism in a 2010 City Council meeting but nothing ever came of her alarm. The police response to calls about gutter punks is typified by the following story by Paul McMahon: “I manage a warehouse close to the Press Street railroad tracks. There is a vacant, semi-standing house across the street from us that is often frequented by gutter punks. We have some young kids (early 20s) from out of state that work with us, and the gutter punks frequently verbally accost them and aggressively panhandle. I’m a bigger guy (ex-college football player) and frequently engage the gutter punks and let them know that my employees and my facility are to be left alone or else I will personally maul every one of the gutter punks that hang out at the vacant house.” “About 3 weeks ago, one of the gutter punks apparently overdosed, and the street between my warehouse and the gutter punk house was flooded with fire trucks and ambulances. Late arriving to the scene was a lone NOPD patrol car, with just one officer in it. The officer never got out of the patrol car, and after about 10 minutes I approached the vehicle, extended my hand to shake his (he never accepted the offer to shake) and introduced myself, my relationship to the warehouse, and requested that he help us

in keeping the gutter punks out of the vacant house. The officer, still sitting in the patrol car, snarled at me: ‘Do I look like someone who can help you?’ I told him that I was sorry for bothering him and turned around to walk back to my warehouse. The officer then yelled at me to ‘Get back here.’ I did as requested, and he then stated ‘I ought to arrest your ass for being sarcastic.’ I responded that I was not being sarcastic, that I was truly sorry for having bothered an NOPD officer with a request for help, and that as a retired lawyer, last I had checked sarcasm was not a crime, even in New Orleans. A NOFD person nearby, who overheard the entire exchange, started laughing and then stated to no one in particular, ‘and, they wonder why no one loves the NOPD’.” Repeated calls and emails to the Mayor’s Office and the NOPD for a comment have gone unreturned. Councilwoman Nadine Ramsey’s office did respond to my initial email request stating Councilwoman Ramsey would have a comment for me in a day or two but as of press time, no such response has been forthcoming.

The Dogs Among the chief complaints against the gutter punks is their poor treatment of animals, particularly dogs. I contacted the Louisiana SPCA regarding this issue and received a somewhat surprising response from Eric Durcinka, the Humane Law Enforcement Supervisor, who has extensive experience dealing with the gutter punk population population. According to Durcinka: > A large majority of the dogs are in excellent health and fully vaccinated. The “kids” bring the dogs with them from their actual residences and bring with them all the animals’ medical record information. > There has been a misconception that the homeless are unable to be arrested if they have a dog, and this is not true. NOPD will simply arrest the offender and we will impound the dog. If that happens the dog will only then be released back to the owner with proper medical records and in full compliance with Orleans Parish ordinance. > The Louisiana SPCA does have the authority to impound any dog in Orleans Parish that it feels is not being cared for properly or is a danger to the general public. Once animals are impounded the owner is typically cited for all applicable violations of which the dog is not returned until the issues are satisfied and the court citations are cleared. > Unfortunately, in any group of citizens there are dogs that are not appropriately cared for. It is easy to assume that the “traveling” groups of seemingly homeless people would take less care of their dogs due mostly to a lack of means, this is not the case. Often, the dogs are extremely friendly due to the constant interaction with diversified populations, they are in good health and well fed, having been given food usually before its owner ate themselves. > Overall our largest concern is the animals being subjected to the elements and eating foods that are not suited for dogs; i.e. human food. Obviously another common issue is when we receive calls that the dogs are being manipulated in some way when asking for money or food. The assertion that these dogs are in “excellent health” seems to me to be a rather dubious claim. It certainly does not jive with I have seen on the streets.

The Gutter Punks’ Side of the Story In the interest of fairness, I have attempted on three different occasions to interview a few of the gutter punks. My requests for an interview were met with two demands for booze and / or food, which I declined. My third attempt was met with the friendly sign of the bird, to which I responded with a few choice words unfit for publication here. Attempting to actually converse with these people is apparently impossible unless you smell like fresh shit on a day old corpse and have lice infested dreadlocks. They do, however, have an on-line presence in the form of websites and message boards and a casual perusal of them is very insightful. They have threads on topics like which city’s police departments are too aggressive and which ones are apathetic. Guess where NOPD falls on that spectrum. Other threads offer advice on how to most effectively beg for money or how to hop freight trains. One of the more popular sites is www.squattheplanet.com. Surprised that gutter punks have cell phones and internet access? Don’t be. A 2011 study conducted by the USC School of Social Work and published in the Journal of Public Health found that 62% of homeless youth have cell phones.

A Call to Action What can be done to address the scourge of gutter punks? One is tempted to hope that a gaggle of them is sitting under the next French Quarter building that collapses. But that’s not very nice, is it? Two things. One, make it uncomfortable for them to be here. Do not give them money or food. Tell them they are unwelcome here. Call the police on them when you see them break the law. Take pictures and video of them. Do not succumb to the temptation to have sympathy for these people. They are homeless by choice. They are not victims of unfortunate circumstances. They are lazy and selfish. Many are aggressive and violent. And although they are biologically human, they certainly don’t act like it. They are a blight on our city, a drain on our economy, and they hurt local businesses. They are arrogant and have nothing but contempt and disrespect for our city. Their sense of entitlement is immense but the only things they are truly entitled to are our disdain, disgust, and derision. Two, put pressure on the city to deal with the problem. Call the NOPD. Write letters and emails to the city council. Post pictures of them on the Mayor’s Facebook page. Perhaps a group of concerned citizens could attend a City Council meeting to voice our collective concerns. Or maybe round them all up and dump them on the steps of City Hall. Drastic measures are needed because the city government and local police have clearly demonstrated time and time again they are unwilling to address the problem. Mayor Landrieu has even described the gutter punks as “a colorful part of the fabric of New Orleans.”

Hurt In An Auto Accident? What Do I Do? First Things First Most of us have been there at one time or another… Your day is going just fine when, WHAM, this car flies out of nowhere and plows into your vehicle. You’re, of course, dazed for a moment. As soon as your mind clears, the first thing you want to do is to make certain that no one in any of the vehicles is severely hurt. This will determine if you call 911 for an ambulance and a police officer, or just a police officer, if no one is severely injured. The safety of the parties should always come first. The emergency lights of all the vehicles involved should be turned on and all parties moved to a safe location (unless more harm could be done by moving the injured party). In order to assist the police officer in the investigation as to who was at fault in the accident, the vehicles should not be moved – unless leaving them in there present location would create a hazard to oncoming traffic. If that is the case, the vehicles should be moved to a safe nearby location. While you are waiting for the police to show up (which could be quite some time), gather up your driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance paperwork. These should always be readily available,

communities ...from 24 Derri and her older brother Roderick share something in common. Unlike little Derrielle, they are not afraid of their neighborhood— which in the past two weeks has seen two murders and four shootings. They think it is normal to walk across the street next to the drug dealing house. They think it part of life to ride your bike between dealers and users. They know who is a “candy lady” and “nice man” in the neighborhood, and where they are. I want you to think about that. I want YOU, YES YOU and I to do something about these three. Roderick is a skinny kid at 13, just hitting that early adolescent stage where he is a bit shy. He’s concerned about perceptions. He tends to hide his face a bit when talking to a lot of people. He has just started playing for a local basketball team. He is absolutely sure after having made a basket that he is NBA bound. A year ago after carrying an Icon to the altar during worship, he was absolutely sure he was going to be a pastor (he does have gifts for this). Three years ago his Auntie who was the glue for the family died. He in effect became the principal caregiver for his siblings at age 10. He had to “be strong” for them. His cousin who is also 13 is already in “the trade” (yea drug dealing). But Roderick is still in St. Anna’s programs. His demeanor, his care for his sisters and his mother, and his direction for today is healthy, strong, quiet, and sure. Roderick, slim, with a Jones’ smile, who takes in and learns his faith, and walks it as best he can. Roderick – caregiver and protector. So, in this “Buying Guide”, buy the Jones’ a future. I want every reader to take a moment or two and donate money to

safely kept in your glove compartment. These are the items that the police officer will request upon arrival. You should exchange names, phone numbers and insurance information with all parties involved in the accident. (The police officer working the accident should do this for you, but sometimes they do not. If a party refuses to provide you with this information, inform the police officer when the opportunity arises.) I would also jot down the make and model of the other vehicles, their license plate numbers and the names and phone numbers of any witnesses to the accident. Almost never, do you want to flee the scene of the accident, unless you feel that your life is in danger. If you feel uncomfortable but not endangered and your car is in a safe location, you should lock yourself safely within your vehicle. What Next? So, the police officer has come and gone and you’re wondering “What do I do now?” Well, if you are hurting, you should immediately have yourself checked out at a hospital emergency room or a doctor’s office. Don’t be surprised if the day of the accident you are feeling fine, and then you wake up the next day or a few days later, and you’re in pain. Have yourself checked out! Delayed feelings of pain following an accident are actually quite common. Next, you have a duty to inform your own insurance company of any accident in which your vehicle is involved. You should do so as soon as you make sure your

[continued on 30] assist this family to get out of the system that is broken and into a system that will nurture their future. For now, that is St. Anna’s Church community outreach program, providing them with tutoring, spiritual and emotional support, and a safe place to be. Send a check to St. Anna’s and mark the memo: Special Kids. Or, go to the website www.stannanola.org and find the donate button, you can designate your gift to SPECIAL KIDS. I want this community within communities to proudly say, “We helped save these children.” I want you, yes YOU and I, to raise $5,000 in the name of these kids to help save their lives. Are three children worth $5,000 per year? What is the value of their lives? If we value them that much or more, how much more will we value our own lives and the lives of those that we know and love? SO, Christmas presents aside, turkeys during the holidays aside, bawdy gifts, fun gifts, sexy gifts, decadent gifts, destination gifts all set aside during the holiday season, let’s plan a life gift for the Jones kids. Then let’s work to make that gift, those gifts, sustainable until the children are self-sustaining and out of peril. If you want to ask questions about this or are interested in doing even more for these three children of light, call Fr. Bill at 504.947.2121. BLESSING BE UPON YOU. Give Thanks today and everyday that you have the power and potential to change lives.

The 2014 New Orleans Fringe Festival Looking back on my Fringe reviews over the years, it’s impressive to see how references have evolved from “30 offerings” to “45 entertainments” to “over 70 different events and productions.” This year the number rose to more performances rather than “That was inthan 80 shows in 44 locations all over the credible!” as I’ve heard at past Fringes. I city, expanding far beyond the Fringe’s missed the audacity of Desiree Burch’s 52 original Marigny/Bywater roots. Regardless of the foregoing, however, Now before anyone starts throwing anything that can get such a large amount rotten tomatoes at me, I fully realize I saw and wide variety of people out of their only a fraction of the offerings; perhaps if I homes and onto seats, benches, cushions, had seen them all, or at least a majority of floors, etc., etc. to enjoy such a cornucopia them, I would feel differently. the legal corner ...from 27 injuries have been addressed. Now, you’re probably asking about the other person’s insurance company. “Should I talk to them?” Chances are they have already been ringing your phone off the wall You should be careful here; remember that this insurance company is working for the other side. But you’re not at fault… What do you have to fear? The answer is PLENTY. While there are some excellent insurance companies out there, there also many unscrupulous ones that will do their very best to trick you into saying something that you don’t mean. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, they were recording you the entire time. “Then what should I do?” you ask. Hire an attorney. I Didn’t Think I Needed an Attorney… Famous words of car accident victims who were in the right but who were tricked and ended up getting nothing for their case or a whole lot less than what their case was worth. Quite often insurance companies are nothing but bullies! They know that they are the experts in the field and you are not. They will take advantage of you in every way possible. That’s where an attorney comes in. The attorney that you hire to represent you for your auto accident is your expert. Only then - when your expert has properly prepped you, should you give a statement to the defendant insurance company in your attorney’s presence. It is estimated that car accident victims who hire an attorney end up receiving a

40% higher settlement than those who do not hire an attorney. Some of the advantages of hiring an attorney include, but are not limited to: A quicker repair time for your damaged vehicle, a higher likelihood of receiving a rental while your car is being repaired, a higher settlement for your pain and suffering as well as a reimbursement for your lost wages, medical bills and prescription medications and a higher likelihood of receiving payment for the diminished value of your wrecked vehicle. Additionally, almost all personal injury attorneys work on a contingency fee basis, which means that they only get a percentage of your settlement if they get you a recovery for your injuries. Bottom line: Even if you are not at fault in an auto accident, it is wise to hire an attorney if you have been injured. A police report is not always the final word on an accident and many insurance companies will not accept a report’s findings. It is an insurance company’s job to pay you as little as possible or nothing at all. An attorney is your own personal expert whose job it is to make certain that you receive every single cent you are entitled to under the law. (These are the personal views of Troy A. Tureau, and nothing therein is intended to be legal advice of any kind. I invite your comments and questions.) Troy A. Tureau, J.D., L.LM., Attorney at Law, Compass & Tureau, LLC, 3801 Canal St., Suite 301, New Orleans, LA 70119, thelawprofessor@comcast.net 504.308.1608.

Les Kurkendaal in Nightmare in Bakersfield boyfriend’s buttoned-down white family, Nightmare tells of his attending boyfriend Michael’s 20th high school reunion where none of Mike’s classmates knew that he’s gay. Two themes thread through the narrative. First, Les’ apprehension of meeting Michael’s schoolmates in Bakersfield, a conservative city of “strip malls, ugly buildings and fast food restaurants” midway between L.A. and Fresno. Second, Les’ jealousy of Michael, who’s been named “One of the 100 Most Famous People to Come Out of Bakersfield” for co-producing the 2005 movie Thank You for Smoking; Les does try to tamp down the green-eyed monster but it’s not easy when you’ve always wanted to be famous even dreaming of being the “adopted black kid on The Brady Bunch.” At first, Les’ worst fears seem to be realized as a preponderance of the reunioners mistake the 5’4" Les for their one black classmate, a 6’3" basketball player, ’cause, of course, “all blacks look alike.” But as the evening wears on, and everything from his loss of virginity to a cancer scare crops up, Les discovers that the Bakersfielders are not such a bad bunch and comes to take pride in being Michael’s “trophy wife” and their enduring relationship. Kurkendaal creates fully rounded characters, and using wry humor leavened with wise & often catty observations perfectly distills his experiences at the reunion. Without overdoing it, he expertly employs different voices for all the people there so, aided by his sharp descriptions, you can vividly imagine each of them. Nightmare in Bakersfield almost ends on a too sentimental note but I was willing to overlook that when everything that had come before had such a tasty tartness to it. High school reunion as nightmare? Not the way Les Kurkendaal tells it. The nightmare of an upcoming Animal Apocalypse is prophesied in Violence of the Lambs, Chris Davis’ very dry, tonguein-cheek comedy adapted from a GQ article by John Jeremiah Sullivan. Certified Animal Behavior Expert Marcus Livengood (Davis), who might remind you of a bad junior high school teacher and who sports a comparative zoology degree from the Univ. of Phoenix, offers examples of sheep, dogs and even sloths who have attacked humans to warn of increasing animal aggression and an imminent Animal vs. Human War. Using stories culled from around the

world and laminated photos that he passes around, Livengood/Davis slowly builds from dogs gone bad (“Beelzepug”) to dolphins whose conversations of nefarious plots he translates for us as Violence spirals into absurdist craziness. Davis adds distinct physical traits to his excellent characterization of the nerdy Livengood for a convincing portrayal of someone you wouldn’t want to be trapped in an elevator with. And, performing in a neighborhood bar in the Seventh Ward, Davis is to be commended for his outstanding concentration which overcame a noisy video game, an energetic jukebox, and some loud customers in the front of the bar. Violence may be a bit of a, ahem, shaggy dog story, but it was clever and well done. The epitome of cleverness could be found at a new, chic coffee shop on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard where Claudia Baumgarten held forth in WIT & WRATH: The Life & Times of Dorothy Parker. Smoothly directed by Diana Shortes, Baumgarten was a stylish guide to Parker’s life and career.

Claudia Baumgarten in WIT & WRATH The Life & Times of Dorothy Parker Stringing together the highs (first female drama critic in America (1917); biggest selling book of poetry ever published (1926)) and lows (victim of McCarthyism, suicide attempts) of Parker’s life with her poetry and stories, Baumgarten demonstrated that Parker has lost none of her bite, though some of her references can be a smidge obscure now. As Parker’s blazing wit still holds up, W&W’s 50 minutes passed by very quickly, but her verses about love and yearning and hope and emotional desperation prove that Parker was more than just one of the Algonquin Table’s waggish geniuses. In fact, I’d like to see Baumgarten expand the “wrath” part of W&W to explore more fully both Parker’s moral outrage which lead her to take an ahead-of-hertime stance on race relations (she left her estate to Martin Luther King and the NAACP) and the anger which a less than satisfying love life (a bisexual husband whom she divorced and remarried; Charles MacArthur getting her pregnant and then paying for her to have an abortion) must have caused to boil over occasionally. A less than satisfying life caused emotions to boil over at The Other Mozart, Sylvia Milo’s involving portrait of Nannerl Mozart, Wolfgang’s sister. Although she too was a child prodigy, a keyboard virtuoso

trodding the boards ...from 30 and composer, who performed throughout Europe with her brother to equal acclaim, Nannerl would be relegated to the background, forced into assuming the circumscribed role of “future wife.” Milo well uses historical documents written by Nannerl’s parents and brother (hers have been lost) and her own imagination to convey the bittersweet tale of Nannerl’s frustration at being overshadowed by “Wolfie”; a momentary pride occurs when her name is listed ahead of her brother’s in a program. Performed by Milo (who alternated with Sara Florence Fellini) in the music room of a grand Bywater home, Isaac Byrne’s direction of The Other Mozart was polished to a high sheen ingeniously hiding props in the folds of an 18-foot-wide tulle and muslin dress that served as a “stage”. Her Austrian accent may not be the most convincing, yet Milo brought out Nannerl’s piercing intelligence and her sheer joy at making music, which was crushed when she had to stop because she was “of marriageable age.” If this engrossing narrative brought back to center stage someone who’s been consigned to history’s marginalia, The Other Mozart fell prey to a certain theme and variations format as Nannerl’s world continually shrinks even as her brother’s expands. Interestingly, Leopold Mozart, Nannerl and Wolfgang’s father, becomes the most dramatically compelling character as we see the toll it takes on him as his plans for the family’s financial success don’t always work out. Nevertheless, with its ravishing period & original music, a sound design that enhanced the text, and a final, stunning coup de théâtre, The Other Mozart was a worthy, sophisticated entertainment. Mozart, or rather Amadeus, played a small part as well in Kurt Fitzpatrick’s Best Picture in which all 86 Oscar winners got lampooned (or at least a mention) in an hour. It’s a cute conceit and there were some sharp moments but it could’ve used more of them. As it was, by the second half a certain similarity among the parodies prevailed depriving the show of the fizzy quality something like this requires. Still, the quick-changing trio of Fitzpatrick, Jon Paterson and especially Tara Travis, whose droll impersonations ranged from Julie Andrews to Meryl Streep and who reminded me of a young Joan Greenwood, were all game co-conspirators for this fluff. There seemed to be a conspiracy afoot in The Hole in the Coffin involving a deceased New Orleans musical legend, his warring family members, a dedicated fan of his, and the fan’s long lost love. Written and performed by Nick Jaina in a moodily low-key mode, after a bit of foreplay, Hole turned intriguing about a third of the way through, but while its emo songs added atmosphere, they slowed things down and I began to lose patience with the show’s dragginess. Chris Cromwell staged this nicely at Siberia and I admired Jaina’s talents playing the piano, guitar and even accordion, but this confessional tale trailed off rather than ending with a proper pay-off, a case of a shaggy dog missing its all-important tail. Over at The Orange Couch another conspiracy seemed to be going on with names redacted to protect the guilty. TED:

Ted offered a series of faux-TED talks steeped in the anti-technology philosophy of Ted Kaczynski, aka “The Unabomber.” This was as dry as a stone and it was almost hard to tell how much of TED: Ted was for real or how much tongue-in-cheek. As for Vodka, F*cking and Television, it seemed to have lost something in the translation from Russian to English. John J. Hanlon’s ponderous translation did little to find an American equivalent for this talky Slavic play of ideas in which a young husband (Ryan Broussard) tries to give up Vodka (Nancy Ramirez), Television (Angelica Menges) or you know what (Candace Taylor) in order to live a better life. The young cast from Lafayette did as much as they could with this, valiantly trying to form flesh’n’blood characters out of conceptual ideas; Taylor especially brought a warmth and sassiness to hers who turns out to be more than what she first seems. Then there was Pussy Panic!, a collection of four yarns written and performed by Dandy Darkly, a monologist with an outsized personality who knows how to work a crowd. Now, I LOVED the “Sweetly Sapphic Romance of Fanny and Dolores” an utterly charming and touching tale of two older women who find love in a seniors home. But “Little Sally, the Kleptomaniac,” who wound up with such things as an old boys’ club and a nuclear submarine in her vagina, and “Mr. Timothy, the Mortician,” who gets business by killing Hollywood dowagers, aspired to sinister Edward Gorey-esque flair but, despite their rococo verbiage, lacked the biting wit needed to fully pull it off. And as for the fourth tale, a noxious exercise in Madonna-bashing and Michael Jackson-knocking, it was about 15 years past its expiration date. So here’s to The Fringe. I look forward to an even more ambitious version of it in 2015!

Coming Attractions A Christmassacre Story, an original musical, will have its world premiere at The Shadowbox Theatre (2400 St. Claude Ave.) on December 4-7 and 11-14. Tony-award winning actor Michael Cerveris (Assassins, Sweeney Todd) will star as Burl Ives in this Christmas horror musical comedy for the first weekend while a surprise New Orleans celebrity guest star will appear the second. A musical mash-up of beloved Christmas TV specials & movies and The Silence of the Lambs, A Christmassacre Story will offer audiences an immersive, multimedia, heinously gory theatrical experience that will be the perfect way to spend a gruesome and entertaining night out during the Christmas season. Patrons are advised to wear their ugliest Christmas sweaters. Over at the House of Blues, our own Bianca Del Rio will touch down on December 13 with her Rolodex of Hate Tour. Nobody seems to know, yet, what she has up her sleeve or under her wig for this mega-tour, but she’s so popular a second late show has already been added. Don’t know what to get the person you love to hate? Tickets to Bianca should do the trick! [Correction: My review of The New Group’s production of Sticks and Bones, incorrectly referred to the director. He is Scott Elliott (not Scott Ellis). I regret the error.]
