Dining Out for Life New Orleans - “It’s time to let someone else do the cooking!” Supporting NO/AIDS Task Force has never been easier or more delicious. The New Orleans community has a once-a-year opportunity to treat themselves to New Orleans’ best local eats while also supporting an important cause. Dining Out For Life is a “don’t miss” event. This annual fundraiser and awareness campaign, now in its 19th year, supports friends, families, and co-workers living with HIV and AIDS in the greater New Orleans area. On July 23, participating Dining Out For Life restaurants will donate a portion of their customers’ receipts from that day to benefit the Food For Friends program of the Task Force. Food For Friends serves home delivered meals to home-bound clients who are not physically able to cook for themselves. In addition, Food For Friends offers pantry service to needy clients who can choose nutritional items to prepare themselves. Food For Friends serves up to 23,000 prepared meals and gives out more than 185,000 pounds of groceries and personal items annually. Participate in Dining Out For Life by dining at participating restaurants, with a portion of proceeds becoming donations to NO/AIDS. “The great thing about Dining Out for Life is that every cent raised here stays right in the community to help the men, women and families affected by HIV and AIDS,” said Noel Twilbeck, CEO of Crescent Care. NO/AIDS Task Force is now a division of Crescent Care, a community health center provider. New Orleans treasure, Poppy Tooker, host of the weekly NPR affiliated radio show, Louisiana EATS!, is this year’s Dining Out for Life Chair for the 4th consecutive year. With her motto, “Eat It To Save It”, Poppy has been instrumental in reviving many endangered foods and food traditions. Tooker is always quick to say “heck yeah!” when asked to support the Task Force. Tooker shares her love of food and cooking with our clients through the Task Force’s Life Skills program and as Culinary Arts Chair for Art Against AIDS. Both are generously sponsored by Chevron. “It’s time to let someone else do the cooking! Dining Out for Life is such an easy and fun way to support NO/AIDS Task Force and our friends working in restaurants during the slowest part of the year,” said Tooker. Muriel’s Jackson Square is a long time participant and always one of the first to sign on each year. Denise Gratia, coowner of Muriel’s with her husband Rick, said, “Dining Out for Life is a highlight of our summer. It is one of our favorite events, and we love being able to support NO/AIDS Task Force and the people – right here in our community – which you serve.” Some of the participating restaurants

Decadence Says “I Do!” raises $5,948.66 for Southern Decadence Southern Decadence Grand Marshals XLI Steven Mora, Rip Naquin, Marsha Delain, Misti Ates and Frankie “Fierce” Wingerter are excited that “Decadence Says ‘I Do!’” raised $5,948.66 for the 44th Southern Decadence celebration and the 2015 Southern Decadence Charities. Not

only did the event make history as Louisiana’s first LGBT wedding expo, it was held on June 26, 2015, the same date the Supreme Court of the United States legalized same sex marriage in all fifty states. Southern Decadence charities include LGBT+ Archives Project of Louisiana, Louisiana Equality Foundation, and PFLAG New Orleans (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Scholarship Fund. None of this would have been possible without the extreme generosity of wedding and events venue, The Chicory, and vendors including Luminous Events, Melissa’s Fine Pastries, Perrier Party Rentals, Sapphire Events, and Urban Earth. The Chicory, an elegant venue for your New Orleans wedding ceremony and reception, features exposed beams, brick walls, and gas lanterns. Originally built in 1852 as a coffee warehouse, The Chicory has maintained its simple name with New Orleans pride. With over 9,000 square feet, the ability to accommodate up to 800 people and 4 different rooms, The Chicory is a very versatile space. From intimate private dinners to grand New Orleans weddings, and corporate events, The Chicory offers a unique and historic event space (www.ChicoryVenue.com). Wedding Belles and The Formal Connection provided wedding attire for the great wedding fashion show. Another tremendous thank you goes out to events planner extraordinaire Tony Leggio who put this fabulous evening together with immense help from Barrett Delong-Church and Laura B. Tennyson. Leggio is an account executive at Hosts New Orleans, a long-time Ambush Magazine columnist, and one of SDGM Frankie Fierce's lieutenants. DeLong-Church is Chief Project Manager at Element B2 Productions LLC. Tennyson is with Lura Belle Productions, and one of SDGM Frankie Fierce's lieutenants. The event raised $3,449.70 for 99 VIP and advance tickets, $1,729.08 for 50 tickets at the door, $420.00 for the Cake Pull raffle, and $650.00 for the Alex Harvie painting auction for a total of $6,248.78; minus $164.70 for TicketLeap charges and $135.42 for Pal Pal charges, for the grand total of $5,948.66. the legal corner by Attorney Troy A. Tureau Email: thelawprofessor@comcast.net

Marriage Equality: Be Careful What You Wish For! First, it has to be said: “CONGRATULATIONS TO US, every member of the LGBT community and all of our straight brothers and sisters who have fought so hard to make marriage equality a reality! We MUST also remember all of those who came before us and paved the way. As a young child growing up in Baton Rouge, I remember feeling like I was the only person in the world who was attracted to someone of the same sex. I still find it difficult to believe that we can get legally married! I honesty never expected to see it in my lifetime. Poor Bobby Jindal! Try as he may, he couldn’t stop it. Don’t worry about him though - he will find other ways to spew his legacy of hatred and intolerance. Now that we have gotten what we have wanted for so long, what now? Well, while I hate to be Debbie Downer (I am an attorney – that’s what we do! It is our job to look out for possible problems and ways to prevent them or alleviate them.), we need to think about some of the issues that surround marriage. Issues such as community property, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, divorce and alimony.

Community Property For those of you who do not know, Louisiana is one of nine community property states. So, what exactly does being a community property state mean? First, generally everything either of you makes or buys is community property and belongs to both of you. Separate property that you bring into the marriage and inherited property are exceptions to this rule and is each spouse’s own property. Second, with some

exceptions, debts incurred during marriage are considered community debts, making both spouses responsible for them. A few scenarios that might surprise you about community property: a) One spouse’s wages can be garnished to satisfy a debt incurred by the other spouse; b) One spouse’s retirement account belongs to both spouses; c) Income generated by separate property quite often becomes community property unless specific measures are taken.

a community within communities by The Rev. Bill Terry, Rector St. Anna’s Episcopal Church, New Orleans Email: fr.bill@stannanola.org

Jerome’s Wisdom Jerome is an odd duck in the 21st century. He is a legacy and sometimes an uncomfortable legacy. He is a black man that is an elder of “the movement.” He was in the sit in’s in the 1960s in New Orleans. He marched, he toiled, he raised his voice against racism and Jim Crow laws. He is still, on this very day, doing the work that he set out to do fifty years ago. Sometimes I wonder what makes a person like Jerome. What influences in his life created him to be the active justice seeker that he is? I would really like to know. He could well have turned violent, he could well have ignored the affront of racism, he could well have turned out a dozen different ways. Even in his own community some admire Jerome and some are uncomfortable around Jerome. But he still carries the banner of justice high. Regarding the Emmanuel Church shootings he had some interesting observations. First he viewed the kind of hatred that was exhibited as an illness. He said that such an illness is pure evil that even if two of the group were white they would have been dead and shot as well. Why? Because the illness of hatred fulfills itself with those acts of violence and that is the end not some shift in policy. Violence begets violence. Jerome, today, mentors many young Black Americans in the Treme. As such a young boy, 11 years old, started to talk to Jerome about the shootings: Boy: My Grandma goes to Bible study

every week and I like to go with her. If we went to that Bible Study at Emmanuel she’d be dead and I would too! Jerome: That kind of violence is a sickness. It only wants to kill what is in front of it. It really has less to do with skin pigment than it does pure evil. Boy: I want to go and shoot that dude. I want to kill the person who killed those people. I hate them. Jerome: I want you to think about Mary. When they killed her son she did not go out and kill a Roman or other perpetrators. If she did she would in turn have been killed and we would never have heard of her. But she didn’t she took a different way to make it right. Jerome then went on to explain to me that he believes that we must have a spiritual grounding and that children today are not getting it, at least not enough, because if you don’t have that spiritual grounding the only thing left is discontent and violent responses to oppression. Whatever Jerome is he has wisdom to share and I hope he shares it abundantly to those that are in his community. Jerome Smith continues the good fight without malice but with the certitude of a Gospel driven man. No, he is not preachy but he is informed by his spirituality. That is the grounding of his justice work. He does not talk much at all about his faith. He simply tries to transform the lives of those around him who are at the greatest risk of becoming haters. Jerome’s justice work looks much like

Prenuptial and Postnuptial Agreements Think of the community property regime as the default rules of the state of Louisiana. Although they are the law of the land, they can be altered. With prenuptial agreements and postnuptial agreements, spouses can choose to opt out of the community property rules and basically write their own rules that will govern their marriage (with some exceptions). Prenuptial agreements are those that are entered into before marriage. Postnuptial agreements are those that are entered into after marriage. Caution should be taken, however, because each state has its own rules which govern the validity of these agreements. Louisiana courts will not hesitate to strike them down.

Divorce and Alimony Of course all the divorce rules that have governed heterosexuals in Louisiana for many years are now applicable to members of the LGBT community. Louisiana does have both no-fault divorces and fault divorces. Divorces can be completed in as quickly as 180 days from the date that the spouses have been living separate and apart. Temporary and permanent maintenance (alimony) for a spouse is determined our own aging but active Stewart Butler. Stewart, for those that know him, is a font of wisdom. He is a living history in many ways. While he was largely unchurched for much of his justice work Alfred, his life partner, was not. Alfred sought Christ always and everywhere and it rubbed off on Stewart in ways that we have yet to understand. The fact is, like Jerome, Stewart Butler is/was a social justice speaker that sought real and concrete solutions to real issues and challenges and did so with a spirit. He took in young men who were ‘lost’ that is, had run away or were headed for sad endings. He became a surrogate mother and father to many. He was active in PFLAG and other organizations that sought equality and the freedom to love. One of the great virtues that I have seen in the LGBT Community is its concern for the young men and women just coming out. More often than not an elder in the community will become a mentor and kind of protector just as Jerome is to his own community. I hope that such continues. Now, more than ever, we should as a community seek and find that spiritual grounding that Jerome talked about and that Stewart lives. If you don’t seem connected to Jerome’s story then maybe you should think about your own story and how that might parallel his in so many ways. The more we seek, find, identify, and name common experience the lower the fence comes between our communities. Jesus called the ultimate expression of connectedness “The Kingdom of God” and later Paul called it “The Body of Christ.” These familiarities of person and experience are often the ties that bind us together a Community within Communities. Whatever may be said, we share a common pilgrimage. Yes, it is true that some of the travelers would reject our connection such as Pastor Fred Luter, Jr. and that is OK. They do so out of tradition and conservatism where change and adaptation are never easily worked out. But regardless of that perspective there are so many others that do stand in solidarity against that illness that Jerome spoke about, that hatred that knows only

by a number of factors including fault of the parties, the need of a spouse to receive and the ability of a spouse to pay. Alimony is one the many items that can be addressed in prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, with a few prohibitions. So, if you have plans to get married, I congratulate you and wish you the best of luck! If you live in Louisiana and the community property laws that I described above are in line with your wishes, there’s no need to do anything. However, if you and your spouse do not wish to be governed by the community property laws of this state, you’re in luck – prenuptial and postnuptial agreements are not just for the wealthy any more! I urge you to contact me or another attorney in order to draft an agreement that accurately reflects the rules that you and your spouse wish to govern your marriage. As always, I invite your comments and questions. (These are the personal views of Troy A. Tureau, and nothing here is intended to be legal advice of any kind.) Troy A. Tureau, J.D., L.LM., Attorney at Law, Tureau Legal, 4631 S. Carrolton Ave., New Orleans, LA 70119, thelawprofessor@comcast.net 504.308.1608. hatred and violence. We must stand together against this informed by the spirit, moved by the consequences of our forbearers Stewart and Jerome, and concrete in our message of Justice, Freedom, Peace, and Dignity for all human beings.

moments in gay new orleans history by Professor Frank Perez E-mail: f.perez@sbcglobal.net Photo by: Larry Graham, GrahamStudioOne.COM

“Upstairs Inferno World Premiere Makes History” June 24 marked the 42nd anniversary of the Up Stairs Lounge arson—the deadliest fire in New Orleans history and the largest mass murder against gay people in United States history. In 1973, the Up Stairs Lounge was a popular gay bar in the upper Quarter. On the fateful night of the fire, an unruly patron was thrown out of the bar and is widely believed to have started the blaze in a fit of anger. An arrest was never made and the case remains officially unsolved. The chief suspect, Rodger Dale Nunez, committed suicide about a year and a half after the fire, presumably because of guilt and remorse. June 24 also marked the world premiere of a new documentary film, Upstairs Inferno, chronicling the fire that claimed 32 lives. The film debuted to a packed house at the iconic New Orleans Prytania Theater. Documentary filmmaker Robert Camina had learned of the fire three years ago, and, like many people, was astounded he had never heard of the fire before. Until recently, the tragedy had gone largely ignored in national LGBT historical narratives. The first researcher to show any significant interest in the fire was Johnny Townsend, who began compiling information on the victims and writing the story of the arson in 1989. The manuscript he completed in 1990 would later be published as Let the Faggots Burn (2011). In 2013, on the 40th anniversary of the fire, filmmaker Royd Anderson released a short documentary called The UpStairs Lounge Fire and a short article, Remembering the Worst Mass Killing of LGBT People in U.S. History by Diane Anderson-Minshall, appeared in the Advocate. A longer article appeared in Time magazine, The Upstairs Lounge

Fire: The Little Known Story of the Largest Killing of Gays in US History by Elizabeth Dias. On the 40th anniversary of the fire in New Orleans, Frank Perez and Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain planned a Commemoration Ceremony, which was hosted by the Williams Research Center of the Historic New Orleans Collection. Artist Skylar Fein, who had previously created an exhibit based on the fire, gave a brief lecture accompanied by a slide show. Fein’s presentation was followed by a talk by author Clayton Delery-Edwards, who was then still writing a book about the fire. Attendees were then invited to a viewing the Williams Research Center’s archival material concerning the fire, including the original police report as well as an original manuscript of Johnny Townsend’s book about the fire. The Historic New Orleans Collection event was followed by a Jazz

commentary Bobby Jindal, Like Cheese, Does Not Travel Well by Frank Perez, f.perez@sbcglobal.net We are almost a month into Bobby Jack-Ass Jindal’s presidential campaign and the verdict is in: Bobby Jindal is more pathetic than anyone could have possibly imagined. The avalanche of national ridicule began as soon as Jindal “announced” his candidacy in a highly bizarre video taken with a cheap hidden camera he had installed overlooking his back patio. In it, Jindal and his wife are sitting with their three children, who are unaware they are being recorded, when he tells them he is running for President. The kids are underwhelmed. One of them asks if they can get a dog while another child is preoccupied with a nearby turtle lurching across the lawn. The audio quality of the video is horrible and the camera angle obscures nearly all their faces. Social media posts describing the event were filled with words like “strange,” “creepy,” “awkward,” and “bleak.” Rolling Stone went so far as to say, “Far from being folksy, it looked like the sort of footage the Tooth Fairy from Red Dragon uses to select his next victim.” Jon Stewart had a field day with the video on The Daily Show. Later, during his formal announcement speech, he invoked the words and memory of Richard Nixon when he declared that he was “Tanned, rested, and ready.” Creepy. Then Jindal went on Meet the Press and spat out his conservative talking points, never mentioning that Louisiana has the 7th highest unemployment rate in the nation and the 3rd highest poverty rate in the nation. Attempting to shred his “Kenneth the Page” image from his disastrous response to the President Obama’s State of the Union speech a few years ago, Jindal desperately tried to come across as earnest and serious, but what he projected was over-eagerness and silliness. The

moderator, in my opinion, was too easy on him but probably figured, what the hell; this guy is at less than 1% in the polls. And then there was the Twitter debacle. On the day Jindal participated in a town hall meeting in Iowa, he started an “Ask Bobby” campaign on Twitter. The idea was to have people ask him questions to be addressed at the meeting but the plan backfired when critics began posting tweets that mocked his ultra-conservative beliefs. Here are a few gems: “Do all Republicans believe The Flintstones is a documentary, or is there room for debate?” “When performing an exorcism, is it necessary to drag the recipient by the hair?” “if I sail too far will I fall off the edge of the Earth?” “If you’re going to spend 5 days a week in Iowa can we put the gov mansion on AirBnB & make up some of the deficit you’ve created?” “Which spice girl is your favorite and if you had a chance, what laws would you pass to oppress them for having a uterus?” The sad thing is Jindal is completely

funeral procession from the Williams Research Center to the site of the fire at the corner of Iberville and Chartres Streets. There, a solemn reading of the victim’s names took place. After the ceremony, a second line parade proceeded to a cocktail party at Café Lafitte in Exile. The commemoration ceremonies were capped off at Café Istanbul with the New Orleans premiere of Upstairs, a dramatic musical by playwright and composer Wayne Self. Delery-Edwards book, The Up Stairs Lounge Arson: Thirty-Two Deaths in a New Orleans Gay Bar, June 24, 1973, was published in 2014 and was named one of two Books of the Year by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. The book was also nominated for a prestigious Lambda Literary Award in the category of LGBT nonfiction. The premiere showing of Upstairs Inferno sold out quickly, as did a second screening. The premiere was attended by three survivors of the fire: Regina Adams, Francis Dufrene, and Ricky Everett; friends of victims: Stewart Butler, Henry Kubicki, Mike Moreau; relatives of the following victims: Joseph Adams, Ferris LeBlanc, Bud Matyi, Clarence McCloskey, and Duane Mitchell; close family friends and relatives of Up Stairs Lounge owner Phil Esteve and manager / bartender Buddy Rasmussen; witnesses Clancy DuBos, Ronnie LeBoeuf, Jimmy Massachi , District Fire Chief Chris Mickal, and Bishop Paul Breton; and special guests Louisiana State Fire Marshal “Butch” Browning and Deputy Fire Marshal Trevor Santos. Many of the aforementioned attendees came from across the country and some of them had not seen each other in over 40 years. Camina observed, “Never again will you have so many survivors and key players of one of the biggest events in U.S. LGBT History in the same room. It’s not hard to see the significance of that.” Camina is now taking the documentary on the film festival circuit. This is a daunting challenge because every film festival charges an entrance fee. If you would like to help with these expenses, you can donate to the film festival submission fee fund at www.UpstairsInferno.com. f you live in New Orleans and were unable to attend the two sold out World Premiere screenings of UPSTAIRS INFERNO on the 42nd Anniversary of the fire, we are happy to announce that the film is scheduled to play encore screenings at the Prytania Theater in New Orleans. The film will screen through July 16th at 3:45pm and 8pm. Tickets are available at www.upstairsinferno.com and http:// prytaniatheatreneworleans.com. The Up Stairs Lounge fire was a seminal moment in our history—both locally and nationally. It is a tragic story but one that is worth remembering. For that reason, we owe Robert Camina a debt of gratitude for making this important film. More information is available at unaware of how people perceive him. In his delusional mind, he sees himself as a great leader and moral crusader. In reality, most people look at him and see a dork. And while most republican politicians are generally creepy, even when they are not talking about legitimate rape or Jesus riding dinosaurs side-saddle, Jindal is just dweebishly sad. And pathetic. And lame. And limp. And all the political Viagra in the world can’t change that.

book review Bad Kid David Crabb. Harper Perennial. ISBN: 978-0-06-237128-7. 2015. 335 pages. $14.99. by Frank Perez Bad Kid is one of the best memoirs I’ve read in a long time. Honestly, I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy the book when I started it, but then, after a few pages, I was astonished at how good it is. Captivating, engaging and hilarious, Bad Kid is a must read. More than anything, the book is nostalgic. Crabb recounts his awkward adolescence in Texas in the early 1990s and in so doing transports the reader back to his or her own youth. As Crabb describes his coming out process, he unlocks the reader’s own memories of the joys and terror of being a gay teenager. His writing is a spell that effectively conjures up the mystery, curiosity, fear, excitement and sense of wonder that marks the first steps every teenager’s journey of self-discovery. Somehow David Crabb had convinced himself that every guy preferred Frenchbraiding his girlfriend’s hair to making out, and that the funny feelings he got watching Silver Spoons and Growing Pains had nothing to do with Ricky Schroeder or Kirk Cameron. But discovering George Michael’s Faith confirmed for David what every bully already knew: he was gay. Surviving high school, with its gym classes, locker rooms, and naked, glistening senior guys, would require impossible feats of denial. What saved him was finding a group of outlandish friends who reveled in being outsiders. David found himself enmeshed with misfits: wearing black, cutting class, staying out all night, drinking, tripping, chainsmoking, idolizing The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys, and Joy Division—and learning lessons about life and love along the way. This book is clever, vivid, truthful, endearing, delightful, and poignant. I highly recommend it. David Crabb is a performer, writer, teacher and storyteller in New York City. He is a Moth Story Slam host and three-time Moth Slam winner. His solo show “Bad Kid was met with critical acclaim from The New York Times, MTV, Flavorpill, NY Metro and many others, and named a New York Times Critics’ Pick. The show has been performed in New York City since 2011and completed a sold-out run in Virginia in 2013.

Mobile Bleather Weekend July 24 & 25 "DOUBLE XX: Mobile Bleather Weekend 2015" happens July 24 and 25 in Mobile, Alabama. The bear/leather event features two days of bar based events, culminating in the raucous Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest. This year's contest theme borrows from the traveling circus. "Big Top Bears" is it's official name, (but loose interpretations are accepted.) Mr. GCB is hosted by perennial favorite AJ McKay, and benefits AIDS Alabama South. The contest is Saturday, but the fun kicks off Friday at 6:30 with a complimentary cocktail at Gabriel's Downtown. By 9pm, the action shifts next door to B-Bob's as Bleather presents "The Big Bear Newlywed Game". Late Night turns into all night Friday when the more adventurous migrate to The Midtown Pub for TMP's Notorious Double XX Blackout Party. DJ Krave keeps it bumpin' long after the lights go low. It all ends when you do. Saturday, SLEEP LATE. It's going to be a long night, and besides Jack won't start corn holing until 2pm. If you've never corn holed before, not to worry. A couple of beers and a lesson from Flip Side bartender Jack Pierre, and you'll be sinking 'em in the hole before you know it! Flip Side Bar & Patio is located across the block from BBob's. By the way, Jack is that good looking bear all over www.mobilebleatherweekend.com. 6pm is a great time to gather again at Gabriel's Downtown for pre-contest cocktails and a chance to meet the Mr. Gulf Coast Bear contestants. Thinking about entering? Late entries are accepted here. Enjoy a complimentary cocktail and lite

bites courtesy of the Gulf Coast Bears. By 9pm, find your spot upstairs at BBob's as Mobile Bleather Weekend presents "Big Top Bears: The 20th Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest". Never seen a Mr. GCB? Let's just say we take advantage of our annual theme, which this year is "Big Top Bears". And it WILL be a circus. Louisville's AJ McKay returns to serve as your "ringmaster". Mobile Bleather Weekend is proud to celebrate the 20th (XX) Mr. GCB Contest, which has launched the careers of... well, no one really, but isn't it fun? Our contestants will also assist in our annual collection to benefit AIDS Alabama South. Contact us at mobilebleather@att.net if you'd like to enter (easy, fun, cocktails, admiration from everyone.) You know you want to. B-Bob's big show follows the contest. The night continues at Gabriel's as downtown Mobile gravitates late to Gabriel's Downtown. Karaoke turns to Bearaokee when you show up. Gabriel's is one of only a handful of nightspots allowed to stay open all night Saturday night. You'll have to get a club card, but they're cheap and easy and available at the door. Perfect, huh? Let's talk accommodations. This year's host hotel is Quality Inn and Suites in Historic Downtown Mobile. The rooms have recently been redone, and only three blocks from the bars in Mobile's new Downtown Entertainment District. If you hurry, you can take advantage of a special Bleather Weekend rate of only $50 per night. For the special code and contact number, visit www.mobilebleatherweekend.com for full details. Mobile Bleather Weekend is a bear/ leather/levi themed event. There is no run fee. The only requirement is simply to show up and have fun. well as friends from back in Texas, John and Bernie all of which have been together 40 plus years have always given me the validation that my lifestyle didn’t have to be condoned by the law to be alright, but it needed to be. The couples that didn’t make it to see this day, the ones that no matter how long they were together, no matter what they built together, had to be separated from each other, leaving their spouse to die alone, because the law said they were not family and had no rights, none of these people can be thanked enough for what they lived through and what they did whether knowingly or not for all of us. But what I hope we can all do is respect what they did and why. And realize that this new found right is not one that was gained overnight, and not one to make light of. I have no doubt that so many will run out and get married merely because they now can, not because they have worked on a relationship that is based on sincere love and the desire to commit lives to one and other. We have all made the jokes about what divorce court will look like now. It will be so sad if that ends up not being a joke. I firmly believe it will take a generation if not more for our mindsets in general to change, as we, especially those of my age have been conditioned thru society, to have never thought dating was something we could openly do until the last couple of decades, before that you came out and the vast majority, myself included just counted having the same trick more than a few times as a boyfriend. It was the minority that actually dated, well accept for lesbians, they did always seem to be ahead of us gays in that department. And others always called their newest, their husband, almost moving in over night. I had a many a close friend that rivaled Elizabeth Taylor on marriages three times over. The difference then is a divorce consisted of a uhaul truck

and, or a change of locks on the doors. To be recognized now is but the first step, it is up to this generation and those that follow to see same sex marriage become just marriage. As we have already seen the gay bashings have come back to the forefront, more than when I was a teenager, and I fear they will continue until the near future. So instead of giving those who will continue to fight against what is now law, ammunition for their self righteous guns, show them that while we are diverse, we are still human beings that just have a desire to love and be accepted, while not likely ever conforming to what some may ever see as the norm. I say if you want to dress as Cinderella and have your man ride in on a white horse, go for it, as I hope we never lose our creativity and our over the top gay ways, but always base on love, not just to throw it in others faces the way their norm has been thrown in ours. And for those who see an opportunity to make a fast buck, or another claim to fame by overnight becoming an ordained minister, Really? Think about those I brought up in the beginning of this soap box of mine. Many were ordained long before this and most like Derek took this new found day as a blessing to pass on to others, by offering their services free of charge, for that I applaud. Although I and others may never see the day that our way of thinking about relationships completely shifts from what we became to know as our only way of life, I’m grateful that I lived to see the day that others will be able to if they so choose and I thank all that played a part in seeing the birth of a new era! And that my dahlins is The Real Cheese! Till next time I’m Felicia Phillips, the Cheese Queen of New Orleans.

Don Rickles at IP Casino Resort & Spa in Biloxi The last time I saw Don Rickles, in 2004, he sang (If I Were A Rich Man), he danced (kicking like a Rockette), and, of course, he insulted. Now, nearing 90, he still sings and mercilessly puts down anybody within his range, but his dancing days are over. Seated for nearly all of his hour-long routine, the spirit, coated in bile and schmaltz, is as energetic as ever, but the body is ready for a trade-in. It made for a fantastically surreal experience. Seen recently at Biloxi’s IP Casino Resort & Spa, the show began with a cornucopia of ethnic songs (Hava Nagila, Never On Sunday, a tarantella, some samba, an Irish Jig, etc.) to

letter to the editor Dear Editor, This letter is being written on behalf of Johnny Jackson, Jr., who was first elected to the New Orleans City Council in 1986, and immediately became the Council’s No. 1 supporter of the New Orleans LGBT+ community by being the lead sponsor of the second attempt to pass an ordinance banning discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations on the basis of sexual orientation in New Orleans. We will never forget his 20 minute impassioned closing argument which covered all the bases. Unfortunately it failed to pass by a vote of 2-5, Councilwoman-At-Large Dorothy Mae Taylor being the other vote. Over the ensuing years, Johnny went beyond his duties as a Councilman in publicly demonstrating his support for our community in many different ways. One of the more memorable ones was his joining the Louisiana contingent to the 1987 March on Washington and helping carry our banner past the White House. On another occasion he participated in an AIDS sit-in blocking Loyola Ave. After being arrested and boarding the booking bus, he said to the person next to him, “Come on, let’s get to the back of the bus where there is air conditioning.” More important than his public demonstrations of support were his many scores of hours he and his chief assistant, Lena Stewart, spent meeting privately with us advising and strategizing in preparation for a third and finally successful effort in 1991 to pass the non-discrimination ordinance. During this time he also set up and accompanied us on lobbying appointments, including some with African-American church reverends. Johnny thus WORKED for our com-

munity for the full eight years as a New Orleans City Councilman. Add to all this the fact that Johnny is African American and was representing a most African American district with very few out LGBT+ constituents, and you can see why we have come to the conclusion that Johnny Jackson, Jr., has been the most LGBNT+ supportive local politician in the history of New Orleans. Now our friend Johnny needs OUR help. During the past year and a half he has confronted numerous health challenges, including a stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, dental surgery, colon cancer, surgery and chemotherapy. Although he fortunately is currently cancer—and chemotherapy— free and on his way to recovery, some health challenges continue. Johnny now faces the challenges of paying off his outstanding medical bills which, after his insurance has kicked in, currently exceed $11,500. Some of you may think that’s no big deal, but with his limited SSI income, it’s difficult for him to meet his financial obligations. Therefore he is hosting a benefit and gala fundraiser from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, July 17, at Zulu’s Roy A. Glapion Hall at 730 N. Broad Ave. Admission is by a $25 donation at the door. Even if you are unable to attend, you still may contribute a modest amount by writing a check made payable to Johnny Jackson, Jr., and including on the memo line “Medical Expenses” and mailing it to Johnny Jackson, Jr. 4800 Good Drive New Orleans, LA 70127. It’s important that somewhere on the check you write “LGBT+” so he’ll know it’s from a community that has not forgotten its friend.

fashion the proper framework for what was to come. Led by Rickles’ Musical Director Nelson Kole, the Tuscaloosa Horns sounded Vegas-y but very tight. The curtain then closed and vintage clips of Rickles performing at Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration as well as on the Carson and Letterman shows appeared. Still funny. As The Bullfighter’s Song played, the curtains then re-opened to reveal Rickles in a chair with a cane by his side. Surveying the audience, he got to the point, “I see things that make me laugh my head off.” With the casual irony of a true native New Yorker, he added, “Mississippi—if you do great here, you get to go to Alabama.” But he immediately made clear that no one was immune from his lovable venom, “My wife is up in her room on her broom.” Sure it’s an oldie, but Rickles quickly demonstrated that he hasn’t softened. Not even when it comes to himself; referring to the microphone cord that looped over his back, he declared with a tone showing just how much “fun” it is, “I’m giving myself an enema.” Mr. Warmth may have his own rolodex of hate that he nimbly pulls standard jibes from, but he certainly knew he was in Mississippi, making several direct digs at the state and Southerners in general, like “If you’re waiting for Billy Graham to come out and make a kid walk again, fuhgeddaboudit.” Whether people in the first few rows paid extra in the hope of being the target of Rickles’ barbs, I’m not sure, but many were rewarded with jabs about their looks, clothes or overall attitude. And two 30-year-olds, BIG Ashton from Alabama and a hunky NOLA firefighter, should treasure the experience of being brought up on stage by Rickles who then put them to work. The skit involved a Japanese movie with completely un-P.C. stuff that only Rickles can still get away with, but he had the young’uns cracking up...and the rest of the audience too. As always, Rickles seesawed between insults and avowals that “I’m a nice guy.” But if there seemed to be less of the apologies and lovey-dovey stuff this time, Rickles, perhaps taking into account the recent events in South Carolina and the Supreme Court’s gay marriage decision, made very few jokes at the expense of blacks and no fag gags at all. In other ways, it seemed as though we were listening to Rickles’ greatest hits with humor going back 50 years, but even if he still describes his and his wife’s sex life as a game of “Barge coming up the Mississippi and she’s the dock,” his timing’s as sharp as can be and he’s as much a laugh-maker as ever. Rickles could stay comfortably back home. But as he affirmed that “I love to do what I do for just a little love from you,” you got a true sense of this

great entertainer’s primal urge to perform. Because of this and his marvelous talent, the audience’s love and admiration for this living legend was palpable, as was their willingness to indulge the visibly frail 89-year-old who’s still giving it his all. As wonderful as it was to see clips from yesteryear of a much younger Rickles performing, a little indulgence was needed as they did go on a bit too long. But perhaps Rickles needed to take a breather. The Merchant of Venom then continued with tributes to his pals Frank Sinatra, who helped to launch Rickles’ career, and Bob Newhart. The Newhart and Rickles families often get together, but when it comes to grandchildren, Bob’s “trying to sell his.” Who knew? Rickles also mentioned that Jimmy Cagney encouraged him early in his career. This led into a very credible impression of the song-and-dance man singing I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy as photos from WWII of Navy Seaman First Class Rickles flashed overhead. Hard to imagine he was ever that young with such a full head of hair. Plugging an August 4 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, who’s “a nice kid...a little annoying sometimes,” Rickles made it clear he has no plans to retire. Which is at it should be. Another legend will be coming to the IP Casino this month. Liza Minnelli, winner of four Tony Awards, an Oscar, a special “Legends” Grammy, two Golden Globe Awards, an Emmy, and one of the entertainment world’s consummate performers, brings her Liza Minnelli In Concert show to Biloxi on Friday, July 24. If you haven’t seen her before, now’s your chance to catch up with everyone else. If you have, you know why you’ll want to see her again. Either way plan to be in Biloxi that night. And plan to be there four weeks later when the Grammy- and Oscarwinner Melissa Etheridge brings her THIS IS M.E. SOLO tour to the IP Casino on Friday, August 21. The performance will feature songs from her latest album, her 12th collection of new material, as well as, I’m sure, many classics from her singular and impressive career.

Great Beast’s Sidewalk Sale of New Work at Old Marquer Theatre through July 14 On a warm, but pleasant, summer night, it was heartening to see several dozen people at Great Beast’s Sidewalk Sale of New Work, three short plays by Michael Martin. If they promised more than they delivered, that’s part of the adventure of experiencing original works. Done outdoors adjacent to the Old [continued on 27]

trodding the boards ...from 24 Marquer Theatre, playgoers are asked to reposition their chairs in between the plays as each is done in a slightly different area. The evening begins with Smokers in which an everchanging group of workers assemble on a loading dock for a couple of puffs. The dialog is naturalistic for this cross-section of ages, genders, sexual orientations and, especially, attitudes. From talk of politics (“Hillary transcends gender”) to a pretentious poetry-spouting two-timer to one character who “wants to peel back the layers of space/time using just his hands,” it’s an intriguing group. But with small talk that’s a little too small, despite some amusing character-driven insights, Smokers is more sketch than play. Under Daniel Schubert-Skelly’s direction, the large cast was still working out the rhythms of the play (apparently the first performance was washed out by rain; I saw what was to be the second), but they’re all game and easily establish the requisite familiarity with each other. My Hair, My Home, the second work on the bill, is one of those classic love/hate letters to Nawlins. Though it threatens to slide into cliche with talk of go-cups, streetcars, potholes and the city’s “danger”, Martin’s knowing specificity when it comes to the city’s bars and other locales keeps it fresh. Billed as a “parody of Margaret Abrams’ A Bittersweet Goodbye to New Orleans”, this sweet portrait of a party girl with glitter and champagne running through her veins is bought to piquant life by Maggie Blaeser whose captivating performance is utterly disarming. Glenn Aucoin directed this brief but highly enjoyable, less-than-ten-minute monolog. And then there was Thee, in which two lovers in a boat “adrift on a Samuel Beckett sea” argue and talk endlessly about their relationship. Various people pop up out of the sea—a father with a bouquet of flowers, an ex, a gunman who robs one of the women of her tiara—but any real drama was scarce and unconvincing. Though I have had the pleasure of working with Martin before and admire all he’s done for our theatrical community, this hour-long piece is simply not one of his better efforts. Director Andrea Watson and lead actresses Annie Gaia and Kathryn Merris Scott must share some of the blame for not bringing more nuance and stylistic variety to this soggy mess. While you can see one, two or all three of these playlets, my advice would be to bail after the first two.

America’s Wartime Sweethearts: A Tribute to The Andrews Sisters at the WWII Museum’s Stage Door Canteen [This show has been extended for Wednesday matinee performances through August 19. Here are excerpts from my review which ran last October.] America’s Wartime Sweethearts: A Tribute to The Andrews Sisters is a sprightly hour-long introduction to a group that virtually defined the decade. Following other such revues that paid tribute to Frank Sinatra and Louis Prima, the Canteen’s Director of Entertainment Victoria Reed has discovered just the right ratio of words to music for these entertainments. With over 30 numbers, the balance rightly tilts towards the music but along the way we learn that oldest sister Laverne was the only one who could read music; the trio recorded over 600 tunes, sold over 90 million records and was the best selling group during WWII; and that they were inspired by the Boswell Sisters of New Orleans.

Book of the Month I love discovering new writers whose books may not be in the normal genre of fiction that normally makes my must read list. That was the case with “Send More Idiots,” a darkly humorous thriller by Tony Perez-Giese. Set at the border between El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico, the novel begins with the disappearance of an American real estate broker under very mysterious circumstances. His brother Jon comes to the area in search of him, not exactly knowing how to go about finding him. Soon he gets embroiled in a devious web of drug cartels and a host of other shady characters his brother was somehow mixed up with. Aided by a rag tag but interesting group of colorful people along the way who somehow fall into Jon’s life, he soon is drawn into this dangerous borderland world where death can

Reed’s supple direction unobtrusively keeps Sweethearts moving along fluidly while occasionally getting audience members involved for a little dancing with the featured performers, the Victory Belles. Reed’s inclusion of clips from some of the Sisters’ films is a nice touch. Heidi Malnar’s choreography is simple but period-appropriate and inventively enhances the vocals. With their creamy voices and terrific harmonies, the Belles (Shelbie Mac, Cristina Perez, Mandi Ridgdell) gorgeously recreate the sound of that era without slavishly imitating the Andrews Sisters. The three of them effortlessly shift from a polka medley to a Latin one while capturing the differing styles of each Sister. Canteen veterans Perez and Ridgdell take Maxine’s high and Laverne’s low parts, respectively, leaving Patty’s leads to newcomer Mac, who’s an absolutely adorable blonde. From Rum and Coca Cola to Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, four generations after these songs sat at the top of the hit parade, they still hold up as archetypal pop tunes. The Andrews Sisters may have been “America’s Wartime Sweethearts,” but if there’s any justice, the catchy songs they made famous will live on forever. Lots more classic hits can be heard Saturdays through September 12 in Sentimental Journey: The Big Bands of World War II, in which The National WWII Museum’s Victory Swing Orchestra celebrates such bandleader greats as Glenn

come very quickly. The novel moves quickly into the action and the character development is wonderful, especially Jon, who leaves a life behind in which he was going through the motions to find his brother. His uncharacteristic actions create the draw for the reader as he risks his life for a man who he had at best a very strained relationship with. Tony does an excellent job at delving into his characters and their situations. The humorous parts of the book are downright funny at times, as the reader gets a peek at a life in what many would see as a modern Wild West. The only minor complaint I have was the ending seemed slightly rushed, but still satisfying. “Send More Idiots” is a fast and funny read that that has both action and heart. After the success of his first novel Pac Heights, it looks like Tony has another hit on his

Miller, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw. The evening will feature memorable tunes like Sentimental Journey, Begin the Beguine, Stardust, Sing, Sing, Sing, and Take the A Train which are sure to put you In The Mood to dance the night away.

And on the North Shore... Playmakers Theater of Covington presents 9 to 5 - The Musical through July 26. Based on the hit movie and with music & lyrics by Dolly Parton, 9 to 5 follows the exploits of three female co-workers and their ultimate revenge on the sexist, egotistical, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. Directed by Justin Lapeyrouse, 9 to 5 features Arianne Poole, Madison Weathersby, Emily Hynes, and Shannon Williams. I’m planning to tumble out of bed and stumble to Covington for this one!

Thursday, July 16, 2015 That incomparable group the Big Easy Sisters is holding a variety show and Chinese auction to benefit St. Anna’s Food Pantry entitled Yoko’s Let’s Have A Kiki. The event will be held at Mags 940 (940 Elysian Fields Avenue) from 7:30 – 10:30pm. With this zany and fun-loving group, you are assured to have an excellent time.

Friday, July 17, 2015 In 1995 on July 17th, a monumental broadcast hit the radio. It was the broadcast of the very first show of OUT! With Michael-Chase. This groundbreaking show changed many lives including the star himself. After years of hearing personal stories from friends and total strangers, it apparently made a difference in thousands of lives in Southeast Louisiana in the mid 1990’s. It was a fun, wild, explorative, and late night openly gay and everything else talk show on B-97 FM. It was the first one of its kind on a major market, commercial FM radio station. Come celebrate the 20th anniversary of that very first show and that historic night at Lafitte’s in Exile (901 Bourbon Street). The event begins at 7pm and runs to midnight.

Saturday, July 18, 2015 And if you miss the Sisters on Thursday, catch them on Saturday as they present their own twisted and festive take to Bingo from 8 – 10pm at the Phoenix (941) Elysian Fields). Bingo: Big Easy Sister style is always lively and you can win some fabulous prizes. But be warned if call a false Bingo, you will be spanked by a Sister.

Sunday, July 19, 2016 If you are enjoying the fabulousness of Tales of the Cocktail, wind down you cocktail adventure for Distillery Day at Old new Orleans Rum (2815 Frenchman Street) featuring delicious barbecue, live music,

and never-before-tasted rums straight from the barrel. This local distillery will be having an open house from 12 to 5pm, with guided tours running at 12 and 3pm. You can get your tickets at https://www.zerve.com/ OldNolaRum/Distill. Get an opportunity to meet the distillers behind our famous rums as they break open aged barrels for the first time and share them for you and enjoy a variety of delicious barbecued meats and sides from McClure’s Barbecue. Live music keeps the party going! Gypsy Elise and the Royal Blues will serenade us all afternoon. Buy your tickets early to reserve a seat on our complimentary shuttle from the Michalopoulos Studio at 527 Elysian Fields Ave.

Sunday, July 19, 2015 One of my favorite Petronius events is coming up, so get those credit cards ready and tune into the Petronius Queer Bar Shopping Network (WPQBSN). This festive event that supports the oldest Gay Carnival Krewe will be held at Mags 940 (940 Elysian Fields) from 1 to 4pm. There will be holiday and seasonal wreaths for all seasons and other super items for auction! Desserts will also be provided for your sampling pleasure! There is a $10 donation at the door (American Express, Discover, Visa & Mastercard accepted).

Wednesday, July 22, 2015 Everybody Scores! HRC Louisiana is hosting the 2015 Bowling For Equality event to help build a community focused on equality for everyone and raising money to support the efforts of the Human Rights Campaign. The event will be held at Mid-City Rock N’ Bowl (4133 South Carrollton Avenue). Registration for the event is $40 per person for unlimited bowling, drinking, and eating as well as membership to HRC Louisiana or $20 for unlimited drinking and eating and membership to HRC Louisiana. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event starts at 7:00 p.m. For more information, look on the Bowling For Equality Facebook Page.

Thursday, July 23, 2015 Dinner never tasted so delicious then when it is for a great cause. Did you know that New Orleans consistently ranks in the top five cities in America for new AIDS cases? The NO/AIDS Task Force serves over 2,500 clients who need a variety of services. You can help these people by dining out at participating restaurants to increase profits and donations given back to NO/AIDS. Treat yourself to New Orleans’ best local eats while also supporting an important cause. Participating Dining Out For Life restaurants will donate a portion of their customers’ receipts from this day to benefit the Food For Friends program of the Task Force, which serves home delivered meals to home-bound clients who are not physically able to cook for themselves. Don’t miss this annual fundraiser and awareness campaign, now in its 19th year locally, as it supports friends, families, and coworkers living with HIV and AIDS in the greater New Orleans area. For more information on the event and participating restaurants, go to www.noaidstaskforce.org.

Saturday, July 25, 2015 Are you ready for one of the most incredible nights of entertainment in July? It’s Johnny Passion’s 2nd Annual Smatch Game! If you missed it last year, make sure

to put this o your calendar now. It is being held at the Pelican Bay Restaurant (1701 Elysian Fields Avenue) starting at 10pm. It’s a fundraiser for Southern Decadence. How this event works is you take RuPauls Drag Race and the old TV game show Match Game and blend them together with hilarious results and stars several of our local entertainers as your favorite celebrities (including moi)! Cover is only $10 at door. There is VIP seating available and several baskets filled with Liquor auctioned off.

Party Down My last two weeks was quite the whirlwind wind of brunches, birthdays, tikis, wedding shows, proposals of marriage and a quick trip to Washington DC. And I still had time buy a new vacuum cleaner, which by the way those Shark steam vacuums are amazing, but I digress. I began my two weeks with a quick trip to Washington DC for the FICP convention. FICP stands for Financial and Insurance Conference Planners and they were having a convention in DC so I joined several of my colleagues from the Hosts family from around the country to throw a party for them during the convention at this hip warehouse called Union Market. I enjoy attending these types of conventions because I get to visit exciting cities, see new trends in events and promote our wonderful city to others. There were educational seminars and great events at several different rooftops overlooking the city. Two events were on the rooftop of the JW Marriott and the W Hotel with great views of the Washington Monument and the White House. I love DC; there is just something so awe-inspiring about being in a city with so much history and power. And the events at the conference will exceptional, saw some new cool things in décor and entertainment that I will try out here like the disco/lounge in the back of the semi-truck. So way cool. I got back from my trip on Friday and jumped right into the party scene; in fact doing an event I hosted. I was lucky to be named as Frankie Fierce’s lieutenant for Southern Decadence and one of my duties was to host a fundraiser for the organization and the three charities they support. I came up with a LGBT inspired wedding event. Who would have guessed our timing would not have been more perfect than the day that gay marriage was legalized by the Federal Government. With Frankie at my side the entire way along with Laura Tennyson and Barrett DeLong, we threw one amazing event. But there are so many other people to thank beginning with the incredible people at The Chicory (Brent, Gina, Jay, Jim and Cindy) whose kind donation of the space, liquor and delicious cuisine could not have even made this event possible. The Chicory is truly one of the absolute best places to throw an event at in the city. Next Evie and the staff at Sapphire Events for their hard work in helping get vendors to donate as well as locating the perfect bridal boutique for the wedding fashion show. The fashion show turned our better than I anticipated thanks to the models that made it fun, flirty and very over the top. The guys and girls worked that runway liked they owned it. Good job to Chase, Chad, Beaux, Adrian, Jessica, Kitty, Elizabeth Bouvier and Frankie Fierce. The tuxedos were from The Formal Connection (thank you Ronnie and David) and the gowns were

from Wedding Belles. Adding to the fun, we had a cigar roller (The Cigar Factory), massage therapist (The New Orleanian), photo booth (Boogie Booth), interactive DJ and an on-site artist named Alex Harvie (who did a brilliant piece that now hangs in my office) painting the portrait of the party which we later auctioned off during the night. The décor was done by Luminous Events with their illuminated LOVE sign setting the tone for the entire night. It was truly event filled with love. Three couples got engaged that night at the event including Misti Ates. The breathtaking floral arrangements were donated by Urban Earth thanks to Julian and his wonderful team of designers. The spectacular cake with the rainbow interior was courtesy of Melissa’s Fine Pastries. The rentals came from Perrier Party Rentals. I even supplied a basket of liquor and other fun goodies from my stash for the cake pull auction. Re-Purposing NOLA also donated the gift bags for the VIP’s which were hand-made. The entire night went off flawlessly. Huge thanks go to grand marshals Frankie, Steven, Misti, Rip and Marsha who worked their butts off. Laura who was my public relations guru had numerous newspapers (The Advocate, Gambit and the Times Picayune) and three television channels on – site doing interviews before and during the event. And lastly Barrett DeLong who kept me from losing my mind especially when I realized I was going to be in DC right up till the day of the event, no pressure whatsoever. It took a team of wonderful and talented people to pull this soiree off and I humbly thank each and every one of them and their organizations sincerely. Now we all can say “I Do.” I followed up the following day with another event I helped with, the Friday Night Before Mardi Gras’ Twisted Tiki party at the luxurious home of Michael Shlenker and Don Schwinn. There was great cocktails provided by the host who had his mixologists create specialty libations just for the occasion. Food and exotic drinks in a nice setting who could ask for more On Sunday, I celebrated my friend Beaux’s birthday with a dinner at one of the mainstay restaurants in NOLA that weirdly enough I had never been to before. The Crescent City Steakhouse on Broad Street is a gem in the increasingly growing number of eateries in the city. No pretention here, just good food and service for a great price. Their cozy dining room feels like you stepped back in time and their steaks are mouth-watering. I can see why they have been in business for over a decade. The next week I began my evening events on Tuesday with the June Hobknobbers event at Canal Place. The monthly networking meeting was hosted by New Orleans Magazine and the Shops at Canal Place. The theme was centered on James Bond and each cocktail was a 007 inspired drink. Models milled around the crowd wearing the latest fashions from the stores in this upscale mall. It was a great event with music from the Brat Pack. Afterwards, a group of us went for a late night bite at Sukho Thai’s newest location on Elysian Fields moving from the Marigny Triangle to the Marigny Rectangle and literally around the corner from my house. The new place is larger and laid out well, a great addition to the neighborhood. Before I knew it, the week had slipped

under the gaydar ...from 30 by and it was already the 4th of July long weekend. On Thursday night, I went to Todd Woodruff’s 40th birthday party at the Four Seasons. There were many wellwishers and we ushered him into a new decade. But the highlight of the night was when Ms. Rhonda Roget came out and did her rendition of Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday Mr. President. Scandalous. On Friday, some friends and I kind of bar hopped after a delicious dinner at Noodle and Pie on Magazine Street Uptown. If you have not been, make it a point to check this place out. We then stopped at Tulane Avenue Bar to see the singing duo of Vanessa Carr and Sydney McMath who lit up the place with their vocals. From inspirational and fun to rock and roll, they covered a gamut of fun tunes for guests. We then went to Paulie’s for a nightcap and got our groove on with the Essence crowd in town. Dancing till the wee hours, this new bar has really remodeled nicely. Saturday was all about the red, white and blue. I hauled my lily white butt to Elizabeth Bouvier’s Chalmansion for her 4th of July swimming party soiree, drank myself a blue streak and ended up red faced with embarrassment from the night’s antics. But all I have to say, I was not the worse and what happens in Chalmette better stay there. All kidding aside, it was a great gathering of friends to eat barbecue, have lots of liquor drinks, swim, watch the fireworks show (which was directly across the street perfect view) and enjoy each other’s company as we celebrate our country’s independence. Good times were definitely had by all. I ended my crazy two weeks with the Southern Decadence Brunch on Sunday at GrandPre’s. The food was delectable especially the stewed chicken thanks to Philip and Rip and Marsha’s Frittata. It was a relaxing way to end the long weekend, surrounded by friends helping support the Decadence Parade and their charities. So until next week, stay Decadent.
