More than 25 Guardians accompanied Veterans on the Honor Flight. Guardians play a significant role on every trip, ensuring that every Veteran has a safe and memorable experience. Guardians included Austin Firefighters and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans. African Americans have participated in every war fought by or with the United States and have suffered both during the war and when they returned home. The stressors that African American military servicemen experience are both multi-layered and interconnected. Like many veterans, African Americans returned to American soil often feeling isolated, unsupported and alone. The Black soldier experience is unique in that after fighting abroad they usually were more likely to be attacked than honored. A 2015 report titled “Lynching’s in America” historians noted between 1877 and 1950 “no one was more targeted than black Veterans.” White supremacists disproportionately targeted black veterans for assault and murder. Despite their experience Black Veterans broke barriers, stood against injustice, helped to pull communities together and helped America overcome its darkest days. These military men and women and so many others have helped us build a greater nation and we owe them a debt of gratitude. Never forget.

[Re]Verse Pitch Competition Is Seeking Applications
T
he City of Austin has found a way to match Entrepreneurs with local businesses using scraps. So if you are interested in pitching scrap and by-product materials I’ve got news for you. They are now accepting applications from businesses and institutions for the fourth annual [Re] Verse Pitch Competition (February-April 2019).
Many organizations have waste products that have more economic potential than being sent to the landfill. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs across Austin are looking for new business opportunities with a positive social impact. The [Re]Verse Pitch Competition helps turn valuable raw materials that are currently leaving local businesses, non-profits, and institutions as waste 14

into the raw materials for new or expanding social enterprises. Entities in Austin that consistently generate or collect by-product, surplus or otherwise underutilized materials are invited to submit an application by December 7, 2018 to become [Re]Verse Material Suppliers and pitch at the opening event. All competing entrepreneurs receive guidance throughout the competition
as they formulate a business plan and test their concepts for viability. Details on the prize will be announced in the coming months. The application can be found at www.reversepitch.org Past [Re]Verse Material Suppliers have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in disposal costs, found new potential customers through the competition’s publicity and found creative new ideas for waste reduction. Peek Inside New H-E-B Technology
T
he future of grocery shopping is here, courtesy of a brand new app that lets you skip the checkout line and walk right out with your stuff. It’s like a fast pass for the grocery store. H-E-B has quietly launched a brandnew technology called “H-E-B Go” in 7 stores around Austin. “It’s pretty much a bypassing the line app in my opinion,” said H-E-B store manager Mando. It’s the latest push to keep up with their tech savvy consumers. “Grocery shopping is certainly changing and evolving and H-E-B is keeping pace with every way that our customers want to shop,” said Leslie Sweet, Director of Public Affairs.

You must first download the H-E-B Go app, then walk around with your phone and scan your items and bag as you go. Geoffrey Sanders is one of the first customers to try the new technology in Austin. “You just scan everything and go. It’s much quicker than before when you had to wait in line. I’m very impatient and I don’t do lines very well so anything I can do to avoid them is welcomed,” Sanders said.

The app keeps a running total of what you’ve picked out so far which is nice for shoppers looking to stay on a budget. When it’s time to leave, you completely skip the line and scan the QR code on a kiosk and walk right out the door. It should only take 10-15 seconds. After the QR code is scanned, it automatically charges the card that you put on file with the app and provides an electronic receipt as well.
Right now, the app is only available for use in these stores, but the technology will be rolling out to more stores in 2019. • Leander • Lakeway Rm 620 S/Main St • A 16 Hwy 183/Lakeline Blvd • Hutto Hwy 130/Gattis School Rd • A25 Parmer/IH 35 • Round Rock 05 IH35/University • Kyle

ACC Institutes Put First-Year Students on University Track Success begins with a strong support network. The recently launched academic institutes at Austin Community College (ACC) provide first-year students with exactly that, increasing the likelihood of timely graduation and university transfer. “Institute participants get to know each other in a way that is very rare on college campuses today,” says Dr. Samuel Echevarria-Cruz, ACC dean of liberal arts - social and behavioral sciences. “They also form deeper relationships with faculty than is usually possible.”
Institutes intended for university transfer with openings for fall are: • Business Studies • Pre-Engineering • Teacher Prep • Liberal Arts
Some of the college’s most experienced professors serve as mentors, offering individual guidance and support. They help students explore career possibilities and transfer opportunities.
The Liberal Arts Institute is a good choice for those wanting to explore their options. Students complete 12 credit hours each semester. They follow a predefined course schedule, which eliminates guesswork and saves money by guaranteeing that only the most necessary and relevant classes are taken. This focus on core curriculum equips students with the tools they need to thrive in college and beyond.
Many institutes prepare students to eventually earn their bachelor’s degrees from places like UT Austin and Texas State. These participants will leave ACC with a strong academic foundation and credits that are easily transferable.
“Students develop critical thinking skills, so they can engage with the world around them,” says Echevarria-Cruz. “Joining an institute is a great way to begin college life and start achieving your goals. ” For more information, visit austincc.edu/institutes.

CELEBRATING LIFE
Davis Family
Except from Achievements in Black Austin – A Historical Reference Guide, 2017 Richard O Davis Driven to Excellence - Richard Davis President – Sterling Acura of Austin Richard O Davis was born March of 1950 in a small town called Oren, MO, the second oldest of six children of a single mother. The family moved to Michigan when Dave was three years old so he considers Michigan his home. He graduated from Central Michigan in 1968 on a football scholarship and moved back to become a math teacher and football coach. The largest city Davis had ever lived was Kalamazoo. He knew life in a small-town, growing up in a town of 6000, so he stayed close and kept busy with football. Davis felt like he was a “solid B” student, the first in his family to attend college. His mother and family were always supportive of his dreams. It was in his Sophomore year of college that he decided to pursue education as a career. His first teaching job was that of a football coach at his old high school in a predominantly white community. There was a push then to find minority teachers, and he was well known through his athletic background. After leaving Central State, he joined a company called Aladdin and became a sales rep for thermos’s and lunch
boxes. He used thermal technology to make an insulated serving tray, which brought him to Detroit where he learned about servicing clients. Although he was offered several opportunities for promotion to Nashville, TN, he loved Michigan and was a young man with a new wife, a new home and new son - so family came first. Davis wanted to buy a new car for his wife while the country immersed in the energy crisis and the American Car business was based on big gas guzzling cars. He entered the General Motors dealership program designed to help minorities own their own dealerships and was eventually chosen by the business director to participate in the 12-month program that taught participants how to become dealers. Davis eventually built an Acura dealership in Austin from the ground up and has won several of Acura’s top dealership awards for his dealership excellence in customer service and sales. Davis credits the countless awards he has received to the commitment of his entire staff and team. He says, “all
Richard O Davis
of our excellent employees are driven to create an environment of defining excellence in the area of customer service.” Davis believes that when preparation meets opportunity excellence happens. He takes seriously that he is responsible for others’ livelihood and healthcare and he does not take that lightly. So, he strives each day to keep his nose to the grindstone and puts in the hours. He says it’s important to be a positive thinker, work hard, and do the right thing and if you do that he believes that everything will fall into place. Remembering that nothing happens without effort. Richard Davis is a man known for treating people with kindness and respect. He hopes he has lived a life that others can draw inspiration from. Davis gives credit to his mother for his achievements. He says, “…so much of who I am is due to my mom, because she was a domestic worker and raised six kids on her own and did a fabulous job and she has never got enough credit for it.” To advertise email sales@blackbusinessjournal.com

Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design showcases the work of over 120 artists and designers and illustrates how African design accompanies and fuels economic, social, and political change in the continent. Through sculpture, prints, fashion, furniture, film, photography, apps, maps, digital comics, and more, the exhibition presents Africa as a hub of experimentation that generates innovative design approaches and solutions with worldwide relevance. Organized by the Vitra Design Museum and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Making Africa focuses on a generation of entrepreneurs, thinkers, and designers from and within Africa who address a global audience and provide the world with a new vantage point on their continent. Ranging from playful to provocative to political, their work often breaks conventional barriers between disciplines and expands the potential of design in the twenty-first century. For more information about this exhibition, please visit the Making Africa website. This exhibition will be on view in our Butler Gallery, located on the ground floor of the museum.
