Health & Welness

The ABCs

Of Skin Cancer

Many of us know that cancerous spots can appear in areas that get direct sun, like the face, arms and neck. But body parts that aren’t so visible, or as closely inspected, can also harbor unseen spots that may go undetected and, therefore, escape early intervention.

36

“Under the nails is a very concerning area, especially with the common use of gel manicures,” which use a product that hardens by curing under ultraviolet lamps, says Dr. Laura Farrington, Medical Oncologist at our hospital outside Chicago. “The direct exposure of UV rays to the hands and nails, especially regularly, may increase the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers in those areas.” Even the bottoms of your feet, palms of your hands and your eyelids can be vulnerable to skin cancer. Likewise, your scalp, underarms and groin may not see much of the sun, but cancer can develop there, too. Routine checkups are key to early intervention, Dr. Farrington says. “The scalp is actually a common site for melanomas,” she says. “It is also important to have regular gynecological exams, because even though the pelvic area does not have much exposure to the sun, melanoma can still occur, and it may be difficult to check yourself.” For hard-to-see body parts, try using a hand mirror or asking your loved ones for help. Your hairdresser can also prove instrumental in checking your scalp and behind your ears during your regular visits. If you get massages, ask your therapist to look for unusual moles, spots or patches, especially on your back. See your doctor if anything changes or looks suspicious.

Even the bottoms of your feet, palms of your hands and your eyelids can be vulnerable

To help protect yourself and your loved ones, remember these sunsafety tips: • Wear broad-spectrum sunblock with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15, and reapply every two hours, as all sunscreens deteriorate after that time. If you are swimming, reapply more often. Don’t forget your lips, eyelids, between your fingers and toes and behind your ears. • Help your kids apply and reapply the sunblock, “because even one sunburn as a child can increase the risk for skin cancer,” says Dr. Farrington. • Avoid the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when rays are strongest.

Skin cancer affects people of all demographics, regardless of their skin color or pigmentation. That’s why it is important • Stay in the shade. If you have that everyone wears sunscreen, to be out in the sun during including African-Americans, who high-intensity hours, seek Asymmetry: “can still get melanoma, although the cover of trees or other Half of the mole is different than the other half. the risk is lower,” says Dr. Laurence Border: protective sun barriers. 7 to make springtime last a little longer tips

By: Stephanie Sullivan Whalon

Is it just me or is springtime the best season of the year? This year moreso than others. We’ve had some amazing weather, not too cool, and not too hot. But in true Central Texas fashion, it quickly bounces back to being predictably, unpredictable. Here’s a few tips to help keep that beatiful springtime feeling inside your home, no matter what the weatherman says. So pull back those drapes, and let the sunshine in. 38

1 Make a lighter bed As the temperature rises outside; let’s take this opportunity to pull back those drapes and let the sunshine in. So pack up the heavy throws, blankets, & comforters. Then time to make a lighter bed by brightening your room with lightweight bedding and beautiful pastel colors. Your bedroom is your sanctuary. It’s where you rest, rejuvenate and take a break from the chaos of everyday life. A brighter bedroom makes it easier to get out of bed in the morning. Incorporating bright colors and lighter weight bedding will energize you, so you feel ready to approach the day with a cheerful outlook as you head off to work.

2 Large-scale prints Talk about a comeback. I’m receiving vendor sample books with large, beautiful, bright florals. Simple graphic prints. And large-scale graphic-print rugs in vibrant colors. Pulling from the floral upholstery can go a long way toward “settling” a floral piece into a room. Aim for a mix of large-, medium- and small-scale prints in the room. For instance, a mediumscale floral-print armchair balances the small-scale graphic curtains and large-scale graphic rug. So be adventurous, a large-scale print rug will spruce up any room.

Florals for spring As the colors outside change from a dark, gloomy gray to perfectly sunny, our interiors also request a little freshening. Pick fabrics from a brand that showcases new collections. There’s no better way for your space to blossom than by embracing the newest trends of the season. Outdoor furniture is a great example. Everyone wants to be outside in the beautiful spring weather. What better way to enjoy this trend, than by updating outdoor furniture with beautiful florals? Remember, florals are not just for flowerbeds anymore.

Greenery The Pantone Color Institute announced their pick for the 2017 Color of the Year in January. Drumroll please! It’s fresh, it’s vivacious, and its name is Greenery. It’s a ”fresh and zesty yellow-green shade” that reminds you of the first days of spring. So let nature’s greens revive, restore and renew any room. An example, flourishing foliage with the lushness of the great outdoors. You can find this color everywhere, such as upholstery, paints, accessories and artwork. Be brave and start small; find a beautiful throw and add it to your bedding or be bold and try “Greenery” in a beautiful sofa for your family room.

Plants Everywhere They just have a way of making any space feel bright, lively, and gorgeous. As I search around for some new plants to adorn my home and outdoor space. I found some great ways to decorate with plants so that you mix it up a bit. That flowers in a vase thing and add some new dimension to your home. And you can throw in the color of the year, ‘Greenery’ in a few beautiful potted plants.

39

6 Declutter Go ahead and shed those winter layers. Put away the coats, scarves, and gloves. The rule of thumb, if you haven’t worn it in over a year, it’s time to let it go. (There are so many worthwhile places to donate.) Start with one room at a time in 15-minute increments; this will make the process less overwhelming. Decluttering destresses your already stressful world. Start by cleaning out that junk drawer. There are people who have built their entire small business around helping others declutter. It’s needed, because some of us don’t have the time or desire to do it. Either hire a professional to help you or do it yourself. Trust me you will be glad you did.

7 Sunrooms are big again Enjoying the Texas sun, without the torture of the Texas heat makes sunrooms the number one space for spring. Sunrooms usually act as a third living space. Outdoor furniture uses it best. It can do double duty as living and dining spaces. Keep the kids in the sunroom as they go in and out of the pool with water play without destroying the house. Have the girls over for cocktails, mint juleps or iced tea, and show off your new sunroom.

Extra tip Let’s talk about the color Blush. Okay I know this was last year’s’ Pantone color of the year, but is so beautiful, serene, and relaxing. It’s okay to add softer colors in the spring to give the nod to our favorite season. As we rush to get ready for prom, graduations, vacations, and end of the school year programs. The color Blush can refresh a guest bedroom or your women cave; consider the color blush magical. It looks great on draperies, pillows, upholstery and accessories. It’s time to create magic with the color Blush Pink.

How To Capture

The Best Bluebonnet Picture With all the rain and the beautiful sunshine bluebonnets are popping up all across the Lone Star State. We thought we ‘d share a few tips on how to get the best photos this spring. 1. Be safe: Choose a safe location – find a side road or park, alongside highway’s can be dangerous. 2. Lighting: Time your photo shoot properly to get the best lighting– before 10am or after 4pm. 3. Camera: Use a high quality camera 4. Be aware: Check your surrounding for local wildlife. 5. Bring props: Prepare for the photo shoot. Bring a small stool for kiddos to sit or stand on. 6. Keep Texas beautiful. Don’t neglect the wildflowers. We want everyone to enjoy them.
