The ability to tackle a problem with no set solution - to think creatively and flexibly, to struggle, fail, and try again, to test, revise and reiterate. At Summer Spark, we strive to fill this gap. We are all about physical experiments, purposeful tinkering, messy construction. Creativity Unplugged.

What’s New
in the World of Higher Education? If you’re a parent or grandparent of a college student or soon-to-be college student, you might be interested to learn what’s new in the world of higher education.
Higher college costs Total average costs for the 2015/2016 school year increased about 3% from the previous year: $24,061 for public colleges (in-state), $38,855 for public colleges (out-of-state), and $47,831 for private colleges. Total average costs include direct billed costs for tuition, fees, room, and board; and indirect costs for books, transportation, and personal expenses. Together, these items are officially referred to as the “total cost of attendance.” Note that the cost figure for private colleges cited by the College Board is an average; many private colleges cost substantially more--over $60,000 per year.
Higher student debt Seven in 10 college seniors who graduated in 2014 (the most recent year for which figures are available) had student loan debt, and the average amount was $28,950 per borrower.2 It›s likely this amount will be higher for the classes of 2015 and 2016. Student loan debt is the only type of consumer debt that has grown since the peak of consumer debt in 2008; balances have eclipsed both auto loans and credit cards, making student loan debt the largest category of consumer debt after mortgages. As of September 2015, total outstanding student loan debt was over $1.2 trillion.
Reduced asset protection allowance Behind the scenes, a stealth change in the federal government’s formula for determining financial aid eligibility has been quietly (and negatively) impacting families everywhere. You may not have heard of the asset protection allowance before. But this figure, which allows parents to shield a certain amount of their nonretirement assets from the federal aid formula, has been steadily declining for years, resulting in higher expected family contributions for families. For the 2012/2013 year, the asset protection allowance for a 47-yearold married parent was $43,400. Today, for the 2016/2017 year, that same asset protection allowance is $18,300--a drop of $25,100. The result is a $1,415 decrease in a student’s aid eligibility ($25,100 x 5.64%, the federal contribution percentage required from parent assets).
New FAFSA timeline Beginning with the 2017/2018 school year, families will be able to file the government’s financial aid application, the FAFSA, as early as October 1, 2016, rather than having to wait until after January 1, 28
2017. The intent behind the change is to better align the financial aid and college admission timelines and to provide families with information about aid eligibility earlier in the process. One result of the earlier timeline is that your 2015 federal income tax return will do double duty as a reference point for your child’s federal aid eligibility--it will be the basis for the FAFSA for both the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 years. American Opportunity Tax Credit now permanent The American Opportunity Tax Credit was made permanent by the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015. It is a partially refundable tax credit (meaning you may be able to get some of the credit even if you don’t owe any tax) worth up to $2,500 per year for qualified tuition and related expenses paid during your child’s first four years of college. To qualify for the full credit, single filers must have a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) of $80,000 or less, and joint filers must have a MAGI of $160,000 or less. A partial credit is available for single filers with a MAGI over $80,000 but less than $90,000, and for joint filers with a MAGI over $160,000 but less than $180,000.
New REPAYE plan for federal loans The pool of borrowers eligible for the government’s Pay As You Earn (PAYE) plan for student loans has been expanded as of December 2015. The new plan, called REPAYE (Revised Pay As You Earn), is available to all borrowers with federal Direct Loans, regardless of when the loans were obtained (the original PAYE plan is available only to borrowers who took out loans after 2007). Under REPAYE, monthly student loan payments are capped at 10% of a borrower’s discretionary income, with any remaining debt forgiven after 20 years of on-time payments for undergraduate loans and 25 years of on-time payments for graduate loans. To learn more about REPAYE or income-driven repayment options in general, visit the federal student aid website at studentaid.gov.

Mindful Tips to Boost Self-Esteem Ever feel like your self-esteem is on an emotional roller coaster? Sometimes you feel good about yourself. Sometimes you don’t. There are times when you’re resilient and times when you’d like to curl up in a corner and disappear.
What’s going on? Taking a look at self-esteem can offer a clue. Self-esteem is the ability to feel good about yourself, appreciate your work, take pride in who you are, your abilities, and accomplishments… and at the same time know that you’re not perfect.
Step out of the past… Self-esteem is shaped by input from others. From earliest days, people around you have been sending messages – both verbal and nonverbal – about how you’re doing. Parents, teachers, family members, peers, playmates – their words and judgments can linger on. In fact, messages from childhood can affect how you’re talking to yourself right now!
And into the present… Although the roots of self-esteem are in childhood, the only place to begin the work that supports change is right here, right now. Achieving a clear and balanced view of yourself and accepting your value as a unique person – not a “perfect” person – can boost selfesteem and help you feel happier and more confident. That’s where mindfulness comes in. Simply being present in the moment in a gentle, nonjudgmental way can help you cultivate self-acceptance. If you listen mindfully you can start to hear an interior commentary that may surprise you. Sometimes it’s supportive, sometimes harsh. When you see and understand what you’re telling yourself – and when – you can begin to make changes to support self-esteem. Here are some mindful tips to help you get started:
32
Stop
the Blame Game! When you’re in a slump, you can be interpreting actions, events, and interactions in a way that builds negative momentum. Be mindful and challenge your thinking! Are you caught in an all-or-nothing pattern of thinking? “I didn’t do this perfectly… I screwed it up. Never get anything right…” Are you mistaking feelings for facts? “I feel like a failure… I am a failure…” How about mental filtering? “That’s no big deal, anyone could have done it.” Jumping to negative conclusions? Someone hasn’t called you back – could it be that she’s just busy? No need to create a low self-esteem story!
Start
practicing positives As you explore your self-esteem self talk, take some full gentle breaths in and out… and… begin to claim your successes! Acknowledge what’s worked, learn from your mistakes, and be kind to yourself. Understand that patience is important. Building selfesteem is a process that happens one moment at a time… an opportunity where you can change your life – and only you can do it!
Your Wellness
Tip To-Go: While we’re working on boosting our self-esteem it’s a great time to use mindfulness to stop negative self-talk as well. Use these tips to stop that nasty inner monologue! Stay in the present (in a nonjudgmental way) Learn to listen – to your internal self-talk Change the dialogue - If self-talk says “I never get things right,” try saying to yourself, “I’m having the thought that I never get things right.” This can help put things in perspective – it describes how you feel in the moment, not who you are.

Get the Best Value for Your Home Most sellers today are nervous and unsure. They wonder: is taking a loss on our house inevitable? The answer is no! A strategic sales plan, coupled with a smart buy in your new location will ensure that you recoup the maximum value for your home.
Think Strategy Consult with an expert, local real estate agent to ensure your house is priced competitively and well-staged. Why? Because while there are always three factors to getting a home sold—location, price, and condition—only two are under your control: price and condition. Of the two, which is more significant? Price. Remember that price will correct bad condition, but condition will never overcome a bad price. Act fast. You’re in a race against time—the best price you’ll get in today’s market is the one you get now. If you wait, it will be lower. And every month the price on your home decreases, your costs remain the same. For example, Keller Williams research shows that sellers who listed their home at the price the agent originally 34
$
recommended, sold the home 38 days faster. This is over a month of mortgage and tax payments! For a home that cost $200,000 at time of purchase, with 20 percent down and an interest rate of 6.5 percent, selling a month sooner results in a savings of $1101.31 for the mortgage alone, not including the taxes and insurance that the homeowner would be paying during this time. Don’t worry about where the market has been, keep your focus on where it is going. The price your neighbor down the street got six months ago is not relevant in a market where your house is competing with others from all across town. Again, a local real estate agent will have the kind of long-term, wide-ranging data that will help you decide how to pinpoint your price with precision.
