LUXURIANT AND S O P H I S T I C AT E D Western Red Cedar (thuja plicata) is one of North America's great renewable resources and has an extensive history of use by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, from Oregon to southeast Alaska. Some northwest coast tribes even referred to themselves as "people of the red cedar" because of their extensive dependence on the tree for basic materials. The cedar wood was used for making homes and totem poles, and also crafted into many objects including masks, utensils, boxes, instruments, canoes, vessels and ceremonial objects. Roots and bark were used for baskets, ropes, clothing, blankets and rings.

High cedar shingled roofs with elegantly cambered eaves and handcrafted leaded lights are but a few of the many attributes of Amdega’s celebrated Chelsea range. The distinctive hues of these two beautiful Kingswood models stand resplendent in their own right, amidst Nature’s profusion of colours.

Today cedar is more widely used as linings for clothes chests and closets, often referred to as cedar closets and cedar chests. The Juniper oil derived from the tree is distilled from the wood, and the twigs and leaves used in fragrance, given its distinctive musky smell. The cones can even be used to flavor gin and utilised as a natural kidney medicine.

Ensuring perpetuity When it’s unmistakably autumn the robust and spacious octagonal Jubilee becomes the ideal spot to paint … tranquillity becomes yours alone to savour. As the seasons change the Chelsea cedar shingled roof ages gracefully amidst nature’s skyline of tall trees and brilliant blooms.

Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada and less than 1% of standing timber is harvested on a yearly basis. For each tree harvested three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than manmade alternatives.

THE CHELSEA COLLECTION

A HISTORY OF

BRASS Brassware is the discerning choice for the Chelsea collection.

The history of brass uses itself is

interesting. It is documented that towards the end of the first Millennium BC the use of brass spread across a wide geographical area from Britain and Spain in the west to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India in the east. This seems to have been encouraged by influences from the Middle-East and eastern Mediterranean where deliberate production of brass from metallic copper and zinc ores had been introduced.

If there’s not much outdoor space it does not mean you have to miss out on owning a beautiful garden room. The Corner House is designed especially to fit neatly into the nooks of courtyards and walled gardens ‌ perfect for creating a secret sanctuary or an intimate dining setting for two.

By the first century BC brass was available in sufficient supply to use as coinage in Phrygia and Bithynia, and after the Augustan currency reform of 23 BC it was also used again to make Roman dupondii and sestertii coins. Unfortunately, little is known about the production of brass during the centuries immediately after the collapse of the Roman Empire. Disruption in the trade of tin for bronze from Western Europe may have contributed to its increasing popularity in the east and by the 6th-7th centuries AD over 90% of artefacts from Egypt were made of brass.

THE CHELSEA COLLECTION

S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y A little known but valuable attribute of brass is its excellent hygienic properties. It has been shown that certain pathogens, which can be spread by touch, will die in a few hours on copper and brass surfaces.

Spend your deckchair days lounging at the Mowbray; the largest of the summerhouses in the Chelsea collection. When heating and lighting are also added, the possibilities of this substantial garden room become endless ... formal dining, a cricket pavilion or a spacious TV or games room perhaps.

The brass industry throughout the world

is

well

organised

and

equipped to recycle products at the end of their long lives and process scrap (swarf and offcuts). Making brass from new copper and zinc would

be

uneconomical

and

wasteful of raw materials so, since new brass articles are made from recycled

scrap,

brass

is

acknowledged as sustainable and in the UK brass manufacturers use almost 100% brass scrap.

FOR YOUR

PEACE OF MIND The cedar used for Amdega’s Chelsea range of summerhouses and gazebos comes predominantly from Canada. All of Amdega’s timber products meet the requirements set out by the BMA TRADA Chain of Custody certification which is a timber products traceability system that ensures that certified products all come from well managed sources.

The style of the open sided Belvedere gazebo, with its distinctive ogee arches, is evocative of ancient times past. Yours to make a beautiful place to look out from when taking shade in high summer or shelter from April showers … and idyllic for creating a glamourous and bohemian lounging spot.

The chain of timber custody starts in the heart of the forest, where it is essential that the natural environment and indigenous species are maintained and protected. Amdega’s suppliers have a proven chain of custody and ensure that every link of the chain is strong, every step of the way, to enable Amdega to provide beautiful garden rooms, and that all important peace of mind, to our valued clients.

FOR WORK... Chic modernity achieved here. The seeds of inspiration bloom in a tranquil, contemporary workspace, far removed from the humdrum of ordinary office life. Or imagine a home gym ‌ no excuse to stop working, or working out, as the cloak of night descends.

Over 60% of new businesses are now started from home. This striking increase can be explained by a number of factors, particularly the availability of new technology. The exponential growth of the internet, in particular, has changed the way businesses work forever.

People can work from pretty much anywhere - even

making telephone calls for pennies via the web. Also consider the possibilities of a home gym to visit as you please, and being free from the restraints of expensive memberships.

An office at the end of the garden path offers many benefits. Garden offices are cost effective when you consider the alternative of out-of-home office leased premises or an extension.

Perhaps, as an added benefit, the purchase cost is an acceptable

business tax allowance. Compared to a traditional office, garden rooms win again on cost, time and disruption.

It’s a warm, well-lit, natural environment. No bright

fluorescent strips, grey walls and the white-noise of stale offices. No annoying traffic jams en route or crisp-crunchers at the next desk.

THE PORTLAND COLLECTION

SUMMER ROOMS FOR SUMMERTIME Amdega created the Portland range to fulfil the desire from those wanting to construct a garden room themselves, for use in warmer months only. The simplicity of the designs, specifications and materials for this collection, backed up by the fact that they are made by such a prestigious company, has earned Portland a reputation for being the intelligent choice in the DIY market.

After

choosing your desired model and then placing your order it will be no time at all before your Portland is delivered from Amdega’s workshops in Darlington directly to your door, ready for you or your appointed DIYer to get started.

Portland summerhouses all feature

hardware fixtures and fittings in brass, as a nod to and in homage of Amdega’s celebrated Chelsea range.

Each model is provided with full and

comprehensive fitting instructions and in a choice of two beautiful stains, or alternatively you can choose the unstained option, for you to apply your own colour to suit.

A little DIY confidence is all that is required for you to be able to create a Portland garden room where you will derive pleasure throughout the warmer months. The ever-popular Cliveden follows the traditional summerhouse look that has remained fashionable continuously since way back in the Victorian era.

THE PORTLAND COLLECTION

WOOD IS

GOOD Amdega’s

DIY

Portland

collection

comprises of the construction industry’s tried and tested material, redwood, in beautiful timber slats for the roof and in feathered edge boards for the frame. Interestingly, the first ever record of the redwood was written by Fray Juan Crespi way back in 1769. Its botanical discoverer was Archibald Menzies, whose collections are dated 1794.

The name "redwood"

comes from the first, Spanish, description of the huge trees, Palo Colorado, meaning simply "red trees."

All of the summerhouses and gazebos in the Portland collection allow you to cost effectively transform your garden and add another dimension to precious outdoor living. Make a date with nature and those sunny days your absolute priority, from the octagonal Aldbury summerhouse.

In the Age of the Dinosaurs, redwood species were dominant over much of the Northern Hemisphere, including what is now the Arctic. Redwood bark, which is soft and stringyfibrous, varies in colour from red-brown to greyish. On mature trees it grows to 30cm (1 foot) in thickness. This thick bark protects the tree from fire damage, although repeated hot fires can burn through the bark. These hollowed-out trees were named "goose pens" because inventive early settlers chose to keep their poultry in them.

THE PORTLAND COLLECTION

STYLISH AND

SIMPLISTIC The inside of a redwood tree contains lots of water. This water transports nutrients from the roots to hundreds of feet up into the tree, where the leaves use those nutrients to manufacture sugars and starches. The only way to raise water that high is with a huge pump. How does the redwood tree do it? The answer comes from Don Garlick, a geology professor retired from Humboldt State University. He states that evaporation from redwood leaves draws the liquid up through tiny micro-pores located in cell walls. The water and sap molecules stick together due to surface tension (that is what makes a drop of water bead up) and as long as the chain is not broken, a molecule will pull its neighbour along with it. As the tree grows, the water column extends with it ‌ Mother Nature at her very best.

Cleverly positioned offset doors are a key characteristic of the Richmond summerhouse design, allowing for utmost use of the interior floor space. Create a perfect place to enjoy the spirit of summer in this innovative garden room.

TO ENHANCE LIFE OUTDOORS Distinctive and substantial garden room living is so easily achieved from the Hartforth, an incomparable choice when considerable space is required, for relaxation, play or work perhaps, during the pleasant months. Far more than just a place to rest.

Imagine the possibilities of owning a garden room. All that is required from you is a little imagination, along with that DIY confidence, and your Portland garden room would very soon become an invaluable space where good weather can be fully enjoyed. For those social summer occasions; where an impromptu barbeque can quickly take place, or as the focal point for a child’s party at home, away from the house, instead of hiring an expensive venue. Kids run free and a downpour creates an adventure as they shelter from a storm. Or, for those tranquil moments when the gardener takes a break with a cup of tea, satisfied from their green fingered endeavours. Endless possibilities.

THE GREENHOUSE COLLECTION

FOR DISCERNING

GARDENERS Amdega has provided beautiful glass conservatory and orangery structures to the aristocracy and high society continuously since way back in the 1800s and boasts a formidable client list of nobility, financiers and movers and shakers across the world today. It was in honour of this unrivalled heritage that our design team went back to the Company’s roots and created this exciting collection of greenhouses.

Greenhouses were built in Italy in the 13th Century to house exotic plants that explorers brought back from the tropics and were originally called giardini botanici (botanical gardens).

The concept quickly spread to the Netherlands and then

England, along with the plants. Some of these early attempts required enormous amounts of work to close up at night or to “winterize”. Charles Lucien Bonaparte, a French botanist, is often credited with building the first practical modern greenhouse in Leiden, Holland to grow medicinal tropical plants, originally on the estates of the rich. Then, with the growth of the science of botany, greenhouses also spread to universities to allow extensive research to take place.

THE GREENHOUSE COLLECTION

From Ambition, determination and gain The Company name was originally derived from three crucial values, ambition, determination and gain, and it is with these longstanding values in mind that today’s greenhouse collection came to fruition, with the clear emphasis on attributes and optional features. Imagine for example the benefits of an irrigation system which could be set weeks in advance, and how precious plants could be taken care of whenever you are away. Stress free remote control gardening … no need to worry whilst sunning yourself on a beach for instance.

The French called their first greenhouses “orangeries” as they were used to protect orange trees from freezing in the winter. In the 15th Century owning an orangery was a status

symbol

amongst

wealthy

Europeans.

Experimentation in greenhouse design continued during the 17th Century in Europe with better glass and construction techniques. The greenhouse at the Palace of Versailles was an example of their size and elaborateness; more than 500’ long, 42’ wide and 45’ high. In the 19th Century the largest elaborate greenhouses were built. In England the conservatory at Kew Gardens is a prime example of the Victorian greenhouse along with Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace.

THE GREENHOUSE COLLECTION

OF AN ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDEN Your Amdega is far more than just an average greenhouse … it is a place for everyone. We have tried to envisage every consideration. The doors are wide, staging is high to avoid back strain when standing and it can also be lowered for the wheelchair user (who can also be provided with a ramp for easy access). Base walls can be brick or stone instead of cladding to blend with surroundings and the house if so desired and bench seating is available for that impromptu cup of tea in the sun.

The English garden is a landscape style which emerged in Britain in the early 18th century, and quickly spread across Europe. Presenting an idealized view of nature, it could include a lake, rolling lawns, tree groves, classical temple recreations, Gothic ruins and bridges. By the end of the 18th Century the English garden was being imitated by the French, and also appeared as far away as St Petersburg in Russia. It also had a major influence on the form of the public parks and gardens which appeared around the world at that time.

The most influential figure in the later

development of the English landscape garden was Lancelot “Capability” Brown (1716–1783) who began his career in 1740 and simplified the garden by eliminating geometric structures, replacing them with lawns and views of isolated groups of trees and artificial lakes.

THE RHS COLLECTION

IN HONOUR OF A CLASSIC

C O L L A B O R AT I O N Larch wood is strong and virtually weatherproof with the ability to endure changes from wet to dry without warping, splitting or shrinking, hence its inclusion in the RHS collection. When the larch was introduced to Britain in the 17th century it was planted solely as an ornamental tree. In 1885 the Duke of Atholl planted eleven Japanese Larches on his Dunkeld estate and two European Larches nearby. Seed was collected and planted and in 1904 it was noticed that young plants were exceptionally vigorous. The Hybrid Larch is sometimes known as Dunkeld Larch because of these origins.

Amdega has combined forces with the Royal Horticultural Society to create this distinguished range. Already stunning gardens and grounds can not fail to be further enhanced by the addition of a beautifully designed neat Kilburn, spacious Sherwood or light and airy Arden.

Deluxe Florentine Bronze hardware features in this range. In history the discovery of bronze enabled better use of metal objects than previously possible. Initially made of copper and arsenic, it was only later that tin was used, becoming the only bronze in the late 3rd millennium BC; as it was easier to cast and, unlike arsenic, the tin was not toxic. The earliest tin-alloy bronzes date to the late 4th millennium BC in Susa (Iran) and some ancient sites in Mesopotamia (Iraq). In Europe, the source for tin was Great Britain’s deposits of ore in Cornwall which were traded as far as Phoenicia in the Mediterranean.

TREE OF LIFE The eastern white-cedar is also called northern white-cedar, arborvitae and swampcedar. The name arborvitae or "tree of life" dates from the 16th century when the French explorer Jacques Cartier learned from the Indians how to use the tree's foliage to treat scurvy. Today, we use cedar leaf oil in medicines and perfumes. Because it is resistant to rot, we use it for shingles and other structures that are exposed to water or soil. Seedlings, saplings and young trees provide the most food for deer and small mammals, which feed on both the leaves and the bark.

The RHS was founded in 1804 as the

Comfort Pack Comprises of electrics, under floor heating and canvas roller blinds in Pebble or Chantilly.

The Roof Roofing is made from Eastern White cedar shingles with cambered eaves. The roof hips and fascia are also made from cedar shingles. Internally the roof is lined with exterior grade plywood with a vapour barrier to prevent moisture build up within the roof space.

Comfort Pack Plus Comprises of electrics and under floor heating, natural wood weave blinds in either Durham or Danby, and two stunning flooring options, Marmol Nilo Marfil or Silver Blue, from Spanish tiling experts, Porcelanosa. Tongue and groove boarding is replaced with a structurally boarded insulated floor to accommodate under floor heating.
