This year, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival is offering another extraordinary series of concerts through the winter and spring, beginning in February with the great violinist Itzhak Perlman.
”
ISLANDER Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Advertising Sales
Last year, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival (AICMF) celebrated its 15th anniversary by reorganizing its schedule. In its first season 16 years ago, the AICMF debuted with a tightly packed two-week schedule in June, and it was exhilarating. There were concerts almost every night somewhere on the island, but if you had already left for the summer or happened to be away, you missed the entire season. One reason for the June schedule was that an unproven festival couldn’t compete for world-class talent in the heart of the winter concert season because performers already had commitments, and nobody knew what to expect on Amelia Island. That is no longer the case. Last year, to underline that the AICMF has become one of the nation’s foremost chamber music festivals, festival organizers revamped the schedule to include a full slate of concerts running from January to May. To punctuate the change, the 2015 season opened with renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma on his first visit to northeast Florida. Now, again this year, the AICMF is offering another extraordinary series of concerts through the winter and spring, beginning in early February with the great violinist Itzhak Perlman. The season runs through the heart of Amelia Island’s busy season, ensuring that this year’s concerts will be enjoyed by as wide an audience as possible. As always, congratulations to General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex, founder of the AICMF, who has shepherded the festival to its current heights. He continues to attract the finest talent in the world of classical music to Amelia Island, while preparing a chamber music season of innovative programming that never fails to delight and surprise. This year, the festival is pleased to welcome in March the incomparable banjoist Bela Fleck, a 16-time Grammy Award winner. We also want to acknowledge AICMF Executive Director Dr. Joe Marasco, who has been pivotal in transforming the schedule and securing the community support that makes the festival possible. We are grateful to the local businesses, generous donors, and tireless volunteers who make each season such a resounding success. In addition this month, we suggest a few New Year’s resolutions for your list that might be worth considering this year; we enjoy another “Fernandina Faces” by Dickie Anderson on Joe Anderson (no relation), who moved from West Coast to East Coast with his wife, Judy, and became a tireless volunteer and docent with the Amelia Island Museum of History; we present a “Backyard Adventure” on becoming a “Heritage Monitoring Scout,” part of a new program designed to involve the public in monitoring cemeteries and other archaeological sites in Florida; and much, much more. See you around the island!

ntering its 16 season, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival has become one the nation’s foremost chamber music festivals. In recent years, the festival has featured such renowned artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, and Pinchas Zukerman, and this year promises to be even more exciting. Led by General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex and Executive Director Dr. Joseph Marasco, the AICMF has exceeded all expectations as a presenter of great musical artists from all genres. “I believe our success stems from the fact that Amelia Islanders own this festival,” says Rex. “It’s a powerful but intimate musical experience that the community has enthusiastically embraced.” Mr. Rex has been the general and artistic director of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival since its inception. Following his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School, he was a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. Mr. Rex joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as Principal Cellist in 1979, the same year in which he became the first cellist ever to win the string prize in the biennial Young Artists Competition of the National Federation of Music Clubs. He is a founding member of the Georgian Chamber Players, artistic director of the Madison Chamber Music Festival in Georgia, and he has served on the Board of Directors of Chamber Music America. Mr. Rex is a regular performer at the Highlands Chamber Music Festival in North Carolina and has been Principal Cellist of the orchestras at the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder and the Grand Tetons Music Festival in Wyoming, and the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina.

ITZHAK PERLMAN PERFORMS AT THE FESTIVAL IN FEBRUARY
Rohan de Silva
Dover Quartet
To kick off its 16th season season, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival is honored to welcome virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman. Mr. Perlman is beloved for his charm and humanity as well as his talent, celebrated throughout the world for his remarkable artistry and his irrepressible joy in making music. Born in Israel in 1945, Mr. Perlman was propelled into the international spotlight with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. Following his studies at the Juilliard School, Mr. Perlman won the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1964, which led to a worldwide career. Itzhak Perlman has appeared with every major orchestra and in recitals and festivals around the world. “I saw Mr. Perlman on the Ed Sullivan Show,” says Mr. Rex. “I watched it with my brother. He inspired both of us enormously.” Messrs. Rex and Perlman have played together on a variety of occasions over the years, including a recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and many concerts with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Accompanying Mr. Perlman is pianist Rohan de Silva, who has partnered with Mr. Perlman in recitals around the world, as well as every notable violinist on the concert stage today. Mr. Perlman has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Library of Congress, and at the White House at the invitation of President Barack Obama in 2012 for Shimon Peres; and at a State Dinner in 2007 hosted by President George W. Bush for Queen Elizabeth. Mr. Perlman’s concert will be held on February 6 at First Baptist Church. For information on ticket availability, call the AICMF office at (904) 261-1779.

On February 8, the Dover Quartet will be performing at 7:30 p.m. at the Nassau County Courthouse, 416 Center Street. The Dover Quartet features Joel Link, violin; Bryan Lee, violin; Milena Pajaro van de Stadt, viola; and Camden Shaw, cello. This warm and intimate concert highlights works by Mozart, Smetana, and Benjamin Britten’s String Quartet No. 2 in C Major, a work of startling originality, considered one of the most important string quartets of the 20th century. AICMF’s Quartet-in-Residence, the Dover Quartet catapulted to international stardom at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition. Since then, the Dover has become one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world. “The Dover Quartet carries the torch of the Guarneri Quartet,” says Rex. “They were the first Quartet-in-Residence for the Curtis Institute of Music after the Guarneri retired. We are so proud to have them as our own Quartet-in-Residence.” The Dover will also be performing on March 31 at 7:30 p.m. at Amelia Baptist Church.

ANNE AKIKO MEYERS AT AMELIA PLANTATION CHAPEL
Abigail Washburn and Bela Fleck
David and Julie Coucheron
On February 17, beloved violinist Anne Akiko Meyers returns to the festival in a concert at Amelia Plantation Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Ms. Meyers is one of the most celebrated violinists in the world today. With her passionate performances, purity of sound, and deeply poetic interpretations, Meyers has actively maintained an extensive touring schedule for close to 30 years. The program will include works from Beethoven, Debussy, and others, including Astor Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” Piano Trio, a composition inspired by Vivadi’s “The Four Seasons.” Accompanying Ms. Meyers is Wendy Chen, piano, and Christopher Rex, cello. Ms. Chen has garnered critical acclaim for her engagements with leading orchestras and concert halls worldwide. She debuted with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under conductor Andre Preven at age 15, and in 1990 became the youngest winner ever of the National Chopin Competition. She has performed at many of the top music festivals, including Tanglewood, Spoleto, and Montreux. “Anne Akiko Meyers and Wendy Chen are like family to me,” states Mr. Rex. “They have always been festivalfavorites, and we welcome them again this year.”

BANJO SUPERSTAR BELA FLECK AT OMNI AMELIA ISLAND PLANTATION RESORT
Christiania Trio
On March 5 at Omni Amelia Island Plantation Ballroom at 5 p.m., the AICMF is pleased to welcome Béla Fleck, a banjo superstar in bluegrass, folk, jazz, pop, rock, and world music. Fleck added classical to his repertoire in 2001 with his critically acclaimed “Perpetual Motion” recording that won a pair of Grammys, including Best Classical Crossover Album. He will be joined by his wife, clawhammer banjoist and singer Abigail Washburn. The duo’s debut album, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, took home the 2016 Grammy for Best Folk album. Winner of 16 Grammy Awards, Mr. Fleck has been nominated in more categories than any instrumentalist in Grammy history. “We’re excited to have Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn this year,” says Mr. Rex. “Having two artists in one family is a very rare phenomenon and their appearance in Amelia is a gift. It’s offerings like this that make the AICMF an unusual, eclectic mix of great chamber music.”
CHRISTIANIA TRIO AT PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH The Christiania Trio performs on March 12 at 5 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Featuring David Coucheron, violin, Julie Coucheron, piano, and Christopher Rex, cello, they will perform Brahms’ C Minor Trio, and Schubert’s B-Flat Trio, a lyrical and adventurous work in four movements. David Coucheron joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as Concertmaster in 2010, making him the youngest concertmaster of any major U.S. orchestra. Valentina Lisitsa
New to the festival this year is the City of Angels Saxophone Quartet, a group that has championed the emergence of the saxophone quartet on the concert stage for more than 25 years. Shortly after its founding in the early 1990s, the ensemble, based in Los Angeles, was the first saxophone quartet to win top honors at the prestigious Coleman and Carmel Chamber Music Competitions. Recent honors include concerts sponsored by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, appearances at the Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles, California, and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Artists include Bill Wilson, soprano saxophone; Sean Stackpoole, alto saxophone; Cynthia Swanson, tenor saxophone; and Matt Germaine, baritone saxophone. The concert will be held on March 19 at 5 p.m. at Walkers Landing at Amelia Island Plantation.
VALENTINA LISITSA RETURNS TO AMELIA PLANTATION CHAPEL On April 8 at 5 p.m. at Amelia Plantation Chapel, the AICMF welcomes back virtuoso pianist Valentina Lisitsa, who will be performing works by Rachmaninov and Ravel, and Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” a suite of ten pieces considered the composer’s most famous piano composition and a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. Ms. Lisitsa was born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1973. She started playing the piano at the age of three, performing her first solo recital at the age of four. She attended the Lysenko music school for Gifted Children and, later, Kiev Conservatory. While at the Conservatory, Lisitsa met pianist Alexei Kuznetsoff. The two performed together and, in 1991, they entered and won first prize in The Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition in Miami, Florida. That same year, they moved to the United States to further their careers as concert pianists. In 1992, the couple married. Their New York debut was at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in 1995. Ms. Lisitsa has performed at many international venues, including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and Royal Albert Hall. She has also collaborated with violinist Hilary Hahn for

various recital engagements. Amelia Island Chamber Music supporters will remember many spirited performances by Ms. Lisitsa, including an amazing performance on Two Pianos with Alexei at the Chapel. “Valentina was here for our first festival,” says Rex. “She was so striking, talented, and she drew so many people to our first year. I consider her a hero to our festival!”
NEWDOME FELLOWSHIP ARTISTS AT PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH Valentina Lisitsa
On April 21 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m., the AICMF welcomes the Newdome Fellowship Artists, outstanding music students from the nation’s premier conservatories. These promising young artists will have the opportunity to train with the Festival’s internationally acclaimed musicians. Artists include Julia Bradenburg, violin; Leah Latorraca, violin; Emily Bradenburg, viola; and Wyndham Tsai, cello; along with festival-favorite Elizabeth Pridgen, who has performed at the festival every year since its inception. Ms. Pridgen, praised for her “big piano presence” by American Record Guide, has distinguished herself as a soloist and chamber musician. She is the G. Leslie Fabian Piano Chair at the Townsend School of Music at Mercer University, and currently a Distinguished Artist and Piano Chair at the McDuffie Center for Strings.

Turtle Island Quartet
The Turtle Island Quartet will make its AICMF debut at the Closing Gala on April 23 at 5 p.m. at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Since its founding in 1985, the Turtle Island Quartet has been a singular force in the creation of bold new trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet genre with folk, bluegrass, swing, be-bop, funk, R&B, new age, rock, hiphop, as well as music of Latin America and India. The group’s fifteenth recording, Confetti Man, recently was nominated for a 2016 Grammy. Artists include David Balakrishnan, violin and baritone violin; Alex Hargreaves, violin; Benjamin von Gutzeit, viola; and Malcolm Parson, cello. “When the Festival began 16 years ago, it was modest in operation,” says Executive Director Dr. Joseph Marasco. “The support of the community and corporate sponsors has been astonishing, bringing the festival to the stature it enjoys today. Sponsors include Rayonier, Westrock, Florida Public Utilities, Keyboard Connections, WJCT, CBC Bank, and many more. But our individual donors are really the heart of our Festival, along with the many volunteers who help with tickets, parking, and ushering. It’s definitely a community effort.” In addition to the above concerts, there are four free concerts on March 20, April 1, April 15, and April 19. BROOKE RAULERSON OF ARTISTIC FLORIST WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, CFD, FSMD, took third place overall in the Gateway to the America’s Cup Floral Design Competition this fall in Vancouver. The threeday live competition featured categories such as bridal bouquet, centerpiece, fashion, interpretive design, and tropical design. For two of the categories, contestants brought their own products to the competition, and for the other three categories, they were all given the same materials to create different and unique designs. Brooke received multiple accolades, taking first place in the centerpiece category and third place in tropical design. First place overall went to Juliana Hames of Brazil, second place to Brenna Quan of Canada, and third place to Raulerson. Raulerson, owner of Artistic Florist, was honored to compete alongside 13 other talented contestants from countries in North, South, and Central America. All competitors were hand-selected based on competitions they had won in their represented countries, with Raulerson’s third place award representing the United States. This accomplishment comes after her recent first place award in a June competition, where she won the title of Florida State Designer of the Year. Artistic Florist specializes in floral art and European designs. For more information, visit them at 1430 Park Avenue, call (904) 261-5546, or visit www. artistic-florist.com or their Facebook page.
KATHLEEN MAURER AUTHORS THE FIRST ENCHANTED AMELIA ISLAND COLORING BOOK When artist Kathleen Maurer worked at the Island Art Association in the 1980s, she came up with an idea for an Amelia Island coloring book for children. “While I was sitting at the front desk, I saw that when visitors came in with their children, the kids seemed bored,” said Kathleen. “I thought if they knew more about the island at their level, they would feel more interested in this magical place. Amelia Island is a place of wonder with questions from all ages.” Kathleen’s book, “The First Enchanted Amelia Island Coloring Book” is intended to encourage the imagination of children, featuring pirates, mermaids, Fort Clinch, seashells, birds, and alligators. “Of course there are many story books about Amelia Island,” says Kathleen. “But as an artist myself, allowing the reader to get ‘hands on’ with a book, make their own color choices, and using their own mediums, ‘make believe’ seems much more fun!” The First Enchanted Amelia Island Coloring Book is available at The Book Loft and Eight Flags Antique Market. Kathleen will be signing copies of her book at The Book Loft on January 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, visit www.maurerfineart.com, or call (904) 261-8276.

rowing up in a family with art-related careers, Loraine King’s interest in art began as a child. Her journey continued as an art education major, with a broad knowledge of many mediums and techniques. As an art director for the Shenendahowa School District in Clifton Park, New York, she became an advocate for arts in the community. Upon moving to Amelia Island with her husband, Tom, and with help from the Cooper family, Loraine started the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery. Loraine’s art ranges from American primitive to traditional realism, impressionism, and abstract, including watercolor, acrylic, pastels, pen and ink, and oils. Her American primitives have sold through the Folk Art Museum in New York City, and she has been recognized by the Schenectady Museum and featured in many art publications. Loraine’s art is featured in collections throughout the United States and abroad. She embraces the nature and essence of the communities where she has lived, and her techniques, methods, and form have created interest in her pieces.
One constant in Loraine’s career has been her house portrait work. Working from photographs, she creates paintings in pen and ink, watercolor, or acrylic in contemporary or period style, painting on environmentally-friendly clay board. Why a house portrait, you ask? “Perhaps you have just purchased your first home or have finally completed your dream home after years of planning,” says Loraine. “Maybe it’s your family home or your grandparents’ home. A house portrait is a unique way to celebrate the heart and soul of your life, or those you care about. It makes a wonderful personal gift for someone you love.” Loraine’s work can be found at her home studio by appointment, Isle of Amelia Executive Suites, Amelia Island Real Estate, Scotch Cove Gallery, and on her expanded website. House portraits are the primary feature, but she also makes available her traditional, American primitive, impressionistic, and abstract originals, as well as giclee prints, note cards, and gift certificates. s a licensed life insurance agent, Suzanne McCloud realized she wanted to offer hard, tangible assets to her clients, and she was fascinated with the value of rare colored diamonds. After an exhaustive educational process, she became an Authorized Diamond Consultant with The Diamond Market. “Only 1 in 10,000 diamonds are true colored diamonds,” says Suzanne. “These exquisite rarities have appreciated 10 to 15 per cent each year, and are safe, lucrative assets, experiencing much less volatility than silver or gold. Yellow diamonds have doubled in value every seven years. Reds, blues, and greens have seen the greatest appreciation, having quadrupled within the last decade.” Rare colored diamonds are a growing trend across the globe, giving clients a perfect potential hedge against unstable paper currency and depreciating assets. “FOX, Bloomberg, CNBC, and others are talking about the trend of colored diamonds,” says Suzanne. “We create custom rings, necklaces, earrings in both men’s and women’s jewelry. All pieces receive a Gemological Institute of America grading report and appraisal. And clients can wear them for pure enjoyment while they appreciate in value, and pass them on to a loved one.” When she’s not selling diamonds, Suzanne is very active in the community with the Amelia Island Jazz Festival and Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise. For more information about The Diamond Market, visit www.thediamondmarket.com/ agents/suzanne-mcleod or contact Suzanne at (904) 662-2306 or Suzanne@theconnexionspecialist.com.

or over 26 years, Classic Carpets & Interiors has been family-owned and operated. Buddy and Gayle Kellum and their son, Eric Adams, have searched far and wide to provide their customers with the best flooring available. In 2008, they added 2,000 square feet to their warehouse and showroom. “The main reason for the expansion was to enlarge our hard surface flooring selection of tile and wood,” says Buddy. A wide range of tile is offered, including natural stone, porcelain, marble, and granite, as well as a variety of wood flooring, including green options like cork and bamboo. One of 800 Abbey franchise dealers in the country, Classic Carpets & Interiors also carries an incredibly diverse carpet selection. It is one of the few dealers in northeast Florida to offer premium quality Karastan carpets, and it stocks the largest collection of area rugs on Amelia Island. Classic Carpets also continually updates its styles and products. “One new offering is a patented fiber available from Karastan called Smart Strand with Dupont Corona,” says Gayle. “It offers superior stain and protection warranties—something very desirable to many families. We have also added an extensive selection of Listello Tiles in glass, travertine, and stone materials for bath remodels and backsplashes.” For every product purchased, an expert team that has worked with the Kellums for 16 years provides quality installation services. For more information, call (904) 2610242, stop by their showroom at 802 South 8th Street, or visit fernandinabeach.abbeycarpet.com.

A NEW DAY Since a New Year always brings New Year’s resolutions, here are a few suggestions that can make this year the beginning of a whole new day. BY KAREN MILLER
T
he New Year is here, and “out with the old, in with the new” usually means dieting, gym memberships, and cutting up credit cards. Why are our New Year’s resolutions always about giving things up instead of adding new and interesting things to our lives? A surefire way to approach the New Year is with a feeling of hopefulness and confidence about the future. Optimism is a trait we can train ourselves to adopt. The following are some great New Year’s resolutions we can’t wait to try!
JOIN THE BAND! Did you play the trumpet in the high school band? Maybe the clarinet? Why not dust it off and join the Nassau Community Band! Since 2012, a roster of 40 full-time residents of all ages and skill levels have joined the band, including music educators, college students, and folks who love playing their instruments. Now a multi-generational ensemble, the group is recognized for its repertoire of classics, pops, marches, movie medleys, and the unexpected. Thursday rehearsals are held weekly in the Yulee Middle School band room. Downbeat is at 6 p.m. and rehearsals conclude at 7:30 p.m. Chairs and music stands are provided. Interested musicians are welcome to sit-in at any rehearsal. For more information, visit www.nassaucommunityband.com.
VOLUNTEER! If you’re looking for a way to make a difference in the community, visit the Nassau County Volunteer Center. Serving the citizens of Nassau County, the Volunteer Center recruits and guides thousands of volunteers a year. These volunteers donate tens of thousands of hours to a wide variety of community nonprofit organizations. These hours of service translate into a monetary value of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year! Not sure where you fit in? Staff members will help you find your niche in the community by matching you with a nonprofit that suits your passion! For more information, visit www.volunteernassau.org.
GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS! When was the last time you shared a cup of tea with a neighbor? A smile and wave are a good start, but do you really know the people in your neighborhood? Strong, caring communities begin with friendly neighborhoods, where people look after one another. Invite your neighbors over for a potluck dinner, or get the gang together to pick up litter, or do some yard work for an elderly neighbor. You can even create a page on social network where you and your neighbors can connect and have continued on page 43.

J
oe and Judy Anderson moved to Amelia Island more than 20 years ago from the other side of the country, going from ocean to ocean. They left Malibu, California to be near Judy’s father, who lived in Jacksonville. Upon arriving, they found Amelia Island and built a home. Torn between wanting a historic home and one near the beach, they settled on building a new house near the water and adding architectural salvage from Savannah to the interior, including a newel post, columns, a fireplace, and a mantel. They quickly embraced the positive changes in their lives that the island offered. No more traffic jams and West Coast attitude. The friendly people of Fernandina Beach were quite a contrast to the Californians they left behind. A Notre Dame graduate, Joe remembers the glory years when the school won two national football championships. He tutored football players (including a Heisman Trophy winner) in the dreaded statistics course required of all business majors. He got his MBA at Harvard Business School, and ultimately became responsible for marketing for the largest bank in the United States. Starting his own consulting business, he worked with smaller banks, teaching them how to compete in the marketplace. He chuckles at memories of trying to help people in the entertainment business wisely invest their money. A lost cause, he smiles. The couple are world travelers and have enjoyed house swaps in Paris, Rome, Manhattan, Napa Valley, and Chicago, to name few. They admit it is not for everyone, but it has been a great way to spend quality time in unique places. They have rarely met the people that have spent time in their Amelia Island home. All arrangements are made by email and phone. Like so many world travelers, they find that one of the best parts of travel is coming back to Amelia, their home, and a sought-after destination for others. Joe is a familiar figure both on the beach or downtown, walking his dog Lily Rose, a 125 lb. Great Dane. He was not
allowed to have a dog as a child, so he has more than made up for it by having a Great Dane. In fact, Lily Rose is the fifth Great Dane the couple has owned. Joe and Lily Rose are pet therapy volunteers at Council on Aging, which they visit once a month. Both Joe and Judy are community volunteers. From his first days on Amelia Island, Joe has volunteered at the Amelia Island Museum of History, where he has developed tours and is a museum docent. He developed and leads the popular Friday night ghost tour. Joe also enjoys giving his “Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Being a Pirate” talk in costume. He serves as treasurer for the museum and he is on the museum’s board. Judy is one of the founders of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, and the couple enjoy the world-class musical events the organization brings to the island. The Andersons love walks on the beach, Egans Creek Greenway, and shopping at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning. Lily Rose is a regular at the morning market and knows which vendors are likely to offer her treats. For the world-traveling Andersons, Amelia Island is home sweet home.

TAKE A WALK! There’s a wealth of research to prove that walking is good for you and the results are impressive: major reductions in both diabetes and heart disease, decreases in high blood pressure, increases in bone density, and more all follow regular walking exercise. Walking is one the best things you can do to get in shape, and if you don’t want to walk alone, join the fun people at Walkin’ Nassau, a walking club that hosts two walks per month, along with various social events. Their mission is to give people an inexpensive way to exercise while seeing a variety of places on and around Amelia Island. SMILE MORE! The simple act of smiling can make you happier and healthier! Smiling activates the release of dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin, neurotransmitters that help reduce stress and elicit positive emotions. In other words, while your brain usually controls your muscles, the muscles used for smiling can actually influence your brain. In essence, the brain senses that we must be happy about something, and we actually start to feel happier. In addition, smiling is contagious, and your smile will make others smile, too! A
nother New Year brings with it so many exciting things to do and discover. Here are some of my new discoveries for the garden. Happy New Year to all! You have probably heard of “Bed in a Bag,” but how about a “Big Bag Bed?” A Big Bag Bed is a fabric raised bed. Three of the most popular sizes are 24 in. in diameter by 8 in. high, with a soil volume of 2.1 cubic feet (equivalent to 15 gallons); the “Mini,” a great size to grow herbs and veggies or garlic and onions; and “Big Brother, Jr.,” which is great for growing annuals and perennials. Big Brother, Jr. is 36” in diameter and 12” high, and it holds 5.9 cubic feet of soil (equivalent to 50 gallons), which gives a growing area of 7.1 square feet. And don’t forget “Big Brother,” which is my favorite. It is 50” in diameter and 12” high, with 1/2 cubic yard of soil (equivalent to 100 gallons), providing a growing area of 13.6 square feet. This bed is great for large veggies and flowers, bushes and trees, or maybe a fruit tree surrounded by some new plants. What’s nice about Big Bag Bed is that after the

season, you can re-use the product, fold and store it until next year, or leave it out in the weather. The tough fabric will not crack or break; just re-fertilize next time as needed. The Big Bag Bed is easy to set up. Just unfold it, fill it, and plant. Set the bed directly on the ground. The porous fabric creates excellent drainage and provides plenty of moisture movement within the bed, and the fabric bottom contours to the undulations of your ground. The air prunes the root structure of the plant, promoting better growth. The fabric releases heat, and it’s re-usable again and again for years! Another new addition to Southern Living’s new 2016/2017 plant list is “‘Marvel’ Mahonia,” an excellent yellow

border plant. Gorgeous sprays of fragrant yellow flowers appear in late fall and winter. Flowers develop into grape-like clusters of wax-coated black berries by late summer and autumn. This awesome little shrub is a great solution for anyone with a shady spot who is looking for an evergreen shrub to brighten it up. For edging or ground cover, I love “Genista Lydia Bangle.” In early summer, this vibrant selection smothers its dwarf frame with bright yellow blossoms. During the rest of the season, its small, narrow leaves offer good texture and complement neighboring plants with bolder foliage. For willowy grace and a haze of yellow flowers in the June garden, it is tough to top the members of the Broom clan. This plant thrives in sun and average soil. Fertilize only once in early spring with a granular balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10. If desired, prune after blooming to maintain the compact, lowmounding shape. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

P
am and Bill remember when they first discovered the charm of Amelia Island. “We read an article that said Fernandina Beach is the only historic town where you can walk downtown and purchase a toothbrush,” the couple recalls. The reality of a beautiful, yet practical, island intrigued the pair. “Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort offered a stay-andgolf package that we took advantage of a couple of times,” says Bill. The time spent on the island led the couple to fall in love with it, and they chose it as a warm and peaceful alternative to New York, New Jersey, and Delray Beach, all of which they have previously called home.
The couple purchased a gorgeous oak-canopied lot on the links in Golfside North at Summer Beach and selected Arthur Rutenberg Homes to design and build their home. “We enjoyed studying the plans and modifying them to extend the space into the perfect floorplan for us. The builder, Vic Buscaino, suggested flipping the original orientation of the home to save a large cluster of oak trees on the property,” says Bill. Part of the building process included a visit to a nearby Rutenberg model home, where the builder connected the couple with Nicole Herbert, designer and owner of Vignette

Design on Amelia Island, who supported the couple through their design selections. “Bill and Pam incorporated functionality and sophistication in the design throughout the floorplan,” explains Nicole. The couple was especially grateful for Nicole’s eye in pairing their Cambria Quartz countertops with the sparkling aqua blue backsplash. “Pam and Bill’s aesthetic of fresh, monochromatic hues with splashes of color inspired their other choices of sandy beiges and crèmes. The kitchen counters with their splashes of sea glass blue anchored the coastal palate.” An illustration of the couple’s attention to detail was the particular type of quartz they chose, in which the black tones represent the mountains, the green the sea, and the brown the sand—a few of the couple’s favorite things!

Mike’s creativity even extended to our garage, where we have cabinets that match our house color!” The beautiful interior woodwork houses a collection of “the things of our lives,” says Pam. “Each collectible and piece of glass has a story,” she shares. Bill discovered his love of collecting glass when he received a single 1925 Heisey Glass candlestick as a gift and then began a quest for its mate, which he found after an old-fashioned, pre-Internet search. A.H. Heisey Company was formed in Newark, Ohio in 1895, and Heisey and his sons crafted glass tableware and decorative pieces until 1957, when the factory closed. Today, Bill and Pam’s home is overflowing with gorgeous glass. “A beautiful part of this home is the organizational display cabinets we worked with Mike to design to display the antique glassware,” Nicole explains. “Pam has a real talent for display.” Pam and Bill have made a lovely home on Amelia Island, where they enjoy golfing, walking on the beach, riding bikes, and simply enjoying the charming island they are happy to call home.

La Mancha RESTAURANT Featuring Spanish and Portuguese dishes with Brazilian flavors, La Mancha offers delicious appetizers, distinctive wines, fresh steaks and seafood, and a new Surf and Turf Platter. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
L
a Mancha Restaurant is a one-of-a-kind restaurant featuring Spanish and Portuguese dishes with a Brazilian flavor. Owners Romulo and Amy Camargo, A. J. Adam, along with Chef Willys De Assis, have created a wonderful eatery in this new era of flavorful food and dining, with top-notch service and truly creative dishes. I recently joined my friend Sherry at La Mancha for dinner one night, eager to try some of La Mancha’s new menu items and signature wines. Our server, Damion, started us off with a glass of Casa de Vilacetinho Vinho Verde from Portugal, a young, tangy, slightly effervescent white, which paired well with La Mancha’s soft, yeasty bread and balsamic dipping oil. Sherry and I decided to share Tortilla La Mancha, a rich potato torte, created with layers of sliced potatoes, spinach, Manchego cheese, tavern ham, and eggs. This dish was
incredibly rich, savory, and could be an entrée on its own. To accompany the torte, Damion suggested Vivanco Crianza White Rioja, a beautiful, grassy, herby white, created from rare white Tempranillo Blanco grapes. What a treat for the palate!
Amy sat down and chatted for a bit, telling us about the latest goings-on at La Mancha. They currently specialize in corporate events and “buy-outs” for large groups, serving up to 100 guests. All of their steaks are hand-cut in the restaurant, their seafood is the freshest it can be, and their location at the beach makes for a great dining experience any time of the year. Amy suggested we try their new Surf and Turf Platter, and imagine our surprise when Damion brought us an entire butcher board heaped with steak and lobster tail! This dish is meant to be shared by two people, and it includes saffron rice, roasted plantains and potatoes, vegetable medley, and field green salad. The steak was an aged ribeye, topped with an amazing Spanish bleu cheese sauce, tender and juicy, perfectly grilled. An enormous Maine lobster tail was split in half and topped with garlic, herbs, and more bleu cheese sauce, a succulent treat you don’t see very often on a Florida menu! The vegetables were exceptional. The plantains and potatoes were roasted to perfection, crispy on the outside, and tender within. The field greens were tossed with hearts of palm and olives, and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. I especially loved the vegetable medley, which was a mixture of zucchini, cabbage, onion, and peas, freshly sautéed and seasoned. Sherry and I had a glass of Vivanco Crianza 2012 Rioja, made with 100% Tempranillo grapes, a mature red with hints of smoke and perfect with surf and turf. La Mancha’s Tres Leches Cake was a tasty ending to our meal, especially when paired with a glass of Mont Marcal Brut Cava Reserva, a bubbly cava with lime aromas. Tres Leches means “three milks,” and it is so rich and moist, it’s almost a pudding. It satisfied my sweet tooth perfectly! La Mancha is a warm, welcoming restaurant, a great place for date night or a family celebration. For more information, call (904) 261-4646 or visit www.lamancharestaurant.net. They are located at 2709 Sadler Road.

Preserving History preserving history

STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN MILLER
T
he Amelia Island Museum of History recently offered a special day-long seminar called “Cemetery Resource Protection Training” (CRPT), offered by members of the Florida Public Archaeology Network. I’ve always had a fascination with historic cemeteries and burial sites, and this was a great way to learn more about these very important “outdoor museums,” and about how to make them a living part of our own community. CRPT focuses on cemetery care and protection. Participants explore cemeteries as historical resources and learn about the laws that protect them, as well as about conserving headstones and markers, managing cemetery landscapes, and practicing hands-on headstone cleaning. During the morning class at the museum, Emily Jane Murray, Public Archaeology Coordinator, along with Megan Liebold, Outreach Coordinator, explained that cemeteries are endangered historic resources which need to be preserved and protected. By studying cemeteries, headstones, and burial sites, valuable information about people and cultures from long ago can be discovered. Florida has some of the oldest prehistoric and historic cemeteries of the New World, some from as many as 8,000 years ago. Florida is a cultural melting pot, and it contains burial sites for an array of ethnic groups, including Southeast Native Americans, African Americans, Minorcans, Bahamians, Cubans, Greeks, Spanish descendants, and Jews. The study of cemeteries is vital to our understanding of our diverse communities. The morning class also addressed federal, state, and local laws pertaining to marked and unmarked burial sites, and focused on what is appropriate and ethical when working in a cemetery. Cemeteries need to be maintained for visitor safety, while great care must be taken to respect the grave itself and the iconography that is present, including grave goods, shells, plants, or any items which the living have left in memory of their loved ones. After morning class and lunch, we headed out to Bosque Bello Cemetery to learn how to properly clean headstones, at the back of the cemetery where the oldest graves are found. Cemetery preservation and maintenance requires a biocide called D-2 Biological Solution, an architectural antimicrobial that removes stains on stone caused by mold, algae, mildew, and lichen. It’s quite expensive, but a little goes a long way.
Once a stone has been cleaned properly, it will be several years before it needs to be cleaned again. Emily Jane demonstrated how to check the stone for its sturdiness and safety, as larger stones can cause injury if they were to fall over while being cleaned. Once the stone is considered safe, care is taken to brush it well, albeit gently, from top to bottom to loosen dirt. Then the stone is rinsed well with water, before being spraying with the D-2 solution. Brushing again from bottom to top, it’s only a few minutes before years of dirt and stains begin to come loose. After letting it sit for a few minutes more, Emily Jane rinses the stone all over, and voila!, it’s clean! Our group spent about four hours cleaning stones that afternoon, and we learned about how to become a “Heritage Monitoring Scout,” CRPT’s new program to get the public involved with monitoring cemeteries and other archaeological sites throughout the state of Florida. For more information, visit www.fpan.us/CRPT or www.fpan.us/hmsflorida.
