This month, the Amelia Island Book Festival returns with its 19th annual celebration of reading and the written word. In the last few years, with the support of donors and volunteers, and the leadership of St. Marys, Georgia best-selling author Steve Berry, the festival has presented some tremendous literary happenings here on Amelia Island. The festival’s community-centered vision has always been to open up the world for people of all ages through the promotion and celebration of literacy. In order to accomplish this mission, the festival has brought in a number of well-known authors, who have spoken and passed out books in Nassau County schools, and the festival has introduced a number of fun events that bring authors into the community. This year, Steve Berry passes the chairperson’s baton to best-selling author David Baldacci, a favorite of festival audiences, who has planned another great season this year. The festival kicks off with the wildly popular and appropriately named Kick-Off Luncheon at Walkers Landing in Amelia Island Plantation, which features well-known author Lisa Scottoline. The Tweens & Teens Scene, offered in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County, also returns to Fernandina Beach Middle School. This event, a huge hit with younger readers, features authors Sharon Robison, Susan Viau, Eileen Meyer, Stacy Horan, and Margot Lee Shetterley. And the Gala Dinner at The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island presents AIBF Honorary Chair David Baldacci, New York Times best-selling author Sandra Brown, plus bestsellers Kathy Reichs, Margot Lee Shetterley, and Sharon Robinson. The gala includes a gourmet dinner and a live auction, conducted once again by Amelia Island favorite son State Senator Aaron Bean. The impressive success of the festival depends on the Amelia Island Book Festival’s hard-working board members, the generosity of sponsors, and the efforts of an army of volunteers. All the festival’s great events raise money to place an author in every classroom in Nassau County and a new book in every child’s hand—13,000 books this year. Many thanks to Steve Berry and David Baldacci for creating the kind of fun events that bring authors and books to Nassau County for the benefit of young and old alike. The festival’s week-long celebration of reading perfectly fulfills its stated mission to promote a lifetime of learning. Also this month, we meet River, a Yellow Labrador puppy, who is in training to be a service dog, learning what it takes to train dogs for this indispensable work; discover the origin of Amelia Island’s popular “Story & Song” concerts and get a preview of the upcoming season; learn about some great local places for you and your family to fish; and much, much more. f you’re a lover of books, you’ll want to spend Valentine’s Day weekend with your favorite books and authors at the 19th annual Amelia Island Book Festival on February 13, 14, and 15. Almost 20 years ago, the late Don Parker and his wife Andrea, along with Joe and Joani Selement, had an idea to combine the lure of books with Amelia Island’s spectacular location. As the idea caught on, they gathered supporters and founded a nonprofit organization to launch the first Amelia Island Book Festival in 2001. Overcoming the usual challenges in the early years, its dedicated volunteers, board members, and internationally-known featured authors have made it one of the best book festivals in the country.

Kick Off Luncheon at Walkers Landing featuring Keynote Speaker Lisa Scottoline. A former attorney, Scottoline writes legal thrillers, standalone novels, and humor. Her latest is Someone Knows, a story of how a single decision can undo a family, how our past can derail our present, and how “not guilty” doesn’t always mean innocent. Scottoline’s novels are known for their emotionality and their warm and down-to-earth characters, which resonate with readers and reviewers long after they have finished the books. She also writes a weekly column titled ‘Chick Wit’ with her daughter, Francesca Serritella. It’s a witty and fun take on life from a woman’s perspective, published in the Philadelphia Inquirer. At the luncheon, she’ll be introduced by the festival’s honorary chair, David Baldacci, author of 38 best-selling novels, several of which have been adapted for film and television. His novels are published in

over 45 languages and in more than 80 countries, with over 130 million worldwide sales. He has also published seven novels for younger readers. Mr. Baldacci is the co-founder, along with his wife, Michelle, of the Wish You Well Foundation®, which is dedicated to supporting literacy efforts across the United States. “We’re so fortunate to have David Baldacci as our Honorary Chair this year,” says Larry Williams, AIBF president. “As our community grows, so must grow the Book Festival in order to meet our mission of providing one book to every student in Nassau County—over 13,000 books this year! TWEENS & TEENS SCENE AT FERNANDINA BEACH MIDDLE SCHOOL Also on February 13, Teens and Tweens are invited to come and meet celebrity, noted authors and learn about their writing journeys, in a special event called Teens/Tweens Scenes, offered in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Nassau County. Available to students ages 10 to 18, the event will be held at Fernandina Beach Middle School. Tween students will hear from Sharon Robinson, an educational consultant for Major League Baseball. She is the author of many works of fiction and nonfiction and written

several praised books about her father, baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Her latest book, Child of the Dream, is the story of how one girl finds her voice in the fight for justice and equality. In addition, three noted authors will present, including Susan Viau, author of Samantha Hansen has Rocks in her Head; Eileen Meyer, author of The Superlative A. Lincoln; and Stacy Horan, author of Inland. Teens will meet Margot Lee Shetterley, a Hampton,Virginia native, University of Virginia graduate, entrepreneur, and intrepid traveler, who spent 11 years living in Mexico. Her book, Hidden Figures, tells the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as “colored computers,” and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career. In addition, they’ll hear from three noted authors: K.I. Knight,

WRITERS WORKSHOPS AT FSCJ NASSAU IN YULEE On Friday, February 14, the AIBF and Florida Authors and Publishers Association are presenting a Writers Workshop from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., featuring celebrity author Sandra Brown as the Keynote Speaker. Participants will experience a stellar lineup of professionals to inform both aspiring and accomplished writers about the craft and business of writing. This year’s Writers Workshop features six programs divided into two tracks: The Writing Craft and Publishing/Marketing, with sessions running concurrently in each time slot. Each session (one hour and 15 minutes) will offer a dynamic speaker or panel of professionals, with tips, discussion, insider advice, and opportunities for questions and answers. Writers Workshop will be held at Florida State College, Betty P. Cook Nassau Center and The Bean Center in Yulee.
AUTHORS IN SCHOOLS LITERACY PROGRAM On February 14, the Amelia Island Book Festival’s Authors in Schools program provides students with the opportunity to meet their favorite authors, face to face. “Our partnership with the Nassau County Public Schools is especially key to the success of our Authors in Schools program,” says Larry Williams. “In planning for the festival, we work closely with the district’s administrators, principals, teachers, and media specialists to choose books
and authors which most interest the students. Where else can students be exposed directly to award winning authors coming to their schools to speak directly with them about a book they choose to read? Last year, one of our celebrity authors told us that this is the only book festival venue in the country that provides this type of opportunity for local students, and we are very proud of that!” Following a stringent application process and selection by school media specialists, AIBF purchased approximately 13,000 books for Authors in Schools, in which 30 authors will visit students to talk about writing, reading, learning, and exploring their world through the remarkable resource of books. A special bonus for middle and high schools is the chance to meet celebrity authors Lisa Scottoline, Sharon Robinson, and Margo Shetterly. David Baldacci is also participating in the program.

GALA DINNER AT THE OMNI AMELIA ISLAND PLANTATION RESORT On Valentine’s night in February 2020, ticket holders will be wowed by five celebrity headline authors during the AIBF’s most treasured event, the Gala Dinner held from 6 to 10 p.m. at The Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. Starting with the honorary chair, David Baldacci, the lineup includes prolific New York Times best-selling author Sandra Brown, plus bestsellers Kathy Reichs, Margot Lee Shetterley, and Sharon Robinson. The genre spectrum ranges from internationally popular legal thrillers and murder mysteries to biography and memoir. You can fill your Passport to Literacy with stamps from authors all around the Expo, and then turn it in to be eligible for prize drawings. The passports are designed to help readers circulate around exhibits and get the most out of the event. Funds raised during the AIBF provide two scholarship opportunities to high school students of Nassau County, available for students seeking college education in the communications or creative writing fields. In memory of their late daughter, the Powells joined with the book festival several years ago to co-fund an annual $2,000 college scholarship dedicated to encouraging young writers in their pursuit of a literary career. In addition, a new Amelia Island Book Festival Scholarship, funded by the AEL Family Foundation for $5,000, is available for any area of study. The AIBF also offers a Short Story Writing Contest for middle school and high school students, along with students from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County. Take Stock in Children has provided scholarships, mentors, and hope to academically talented low-income students in Nassau County for 23 years. To continue their invaluable service, the annual Light Up a Life fundraising gala is scheduled this year for March 27 at 6 p.m. at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The evening will begin with a choice of raffle opportunities and a silent auction featuring more than 100 items from businesses and artists across the county. A three-course seated dinner will follow, with an inspiring message from renowned author, David Baldacci. Additionally, current high school and college students, as well as college graduate participants, will share stories about how their lives have been changed by Take Stock in a newly produced video. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County Foundation presents its premier event of the year, their annual Benefit Gala, on Feb. 29. The 13th annual Gala, featuring dinner, entertainment, and an auction, is hosted by The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, a trusted friend of the Boys & Girls Clubs for many years. The Gala supports the work of the Boys & Girls Clubs in providing the youth of our community a safe space to work on academics, engage with positive role models, and develop into confident leaders. The evening features an auction offering everything from Robison Jewelry to hotel stays, cruises, and memorabilia. The day prior is the 2nd annual Swing to Open Doors Golf Tournament, hosted at The Golf Club of Amelia Island. This event is a great afternoon of fun and includes sponsorship opportunities, contests, and prizes for players. Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau depends on these annual fundraising events to support after-school and summer programs at their two clubs, where over 700 local youth ages 6 to 18 are mentored by professional staff and volunteers. DUKE UNIVERSITY CHORALE PERFORMS AGAIN AT AMELIA PLANTATION CHAPEL The Duke University Chorale will make its fourth visit to Amelia Island, March 11 at 7 p.m. for a concert at Amelia Plantation Chapel. During the university’s 2020 Spring Break, Chorale Director Dr. Rodney Wynkoop and close to 50 young men and women will launch their annual tour, which in past years included China, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, England, Wales, Mexico, and many parts of the United States. The Amelia Plantation Chapel has presented the group in concert in the past and is excited to host them again this year. Formed in 1970 when the Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs were combined into a single choir, the Chorale’s repertoire typically features both sacred and secular music ranging from Italian and English Renaissance to contemporary works, from serious to relaxed music, and from unaccompanied works to major pieces with piano and other instruments. In recent years, the Chorale has also performed major works with the North Carolina Symphony and other professional orchestras, including the Brahms, Berlioz, and Mozart Requiems, Bach’s Passion of St. John, Mendelssohn’s St. Paul, Handel’s Israel in Egypt, and Britten’s War Requiem. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door at 36 Bowman Road.

asey Matthews has been creating art since she was a small child. “My creativity begins with a constant state of awareness and appreciation for everything around me,” says Casey. “I’m always noticing patterns in nature, and the way inanimate objects and shapes harmonize with each other. I’m inspired by color, motion, how colors flow, and organic repetition.” Born in San Antonio, Casey moved to Amelia Island 20 years ago, initially creating art in her studio space at the Blue Door Artists. But in 2017, she realized she needed a larger space to work in, so she opened her own studio and gallery at 813 South 8th Street. Casey’s artwork

works on multiple pieces at once, inspired by the coastal community in which she resides. Her art can be found on her website and in galleries across the country, including Boston, Charlotte, Atlanta, Delray Beach, Birmingham, and New Orleans. Casey creates rich paintings with multi-media surfaces that are both visually intriguing and full of energy. They incorporate expressive color, fluid movement, and strong elements of design. She has developed a series of gestures and marks that make up a unique visual language. From a distance, her works impose a singular statement of color, composition and tone; viewed closely, they suggest a complex narrative that is multi-hued and textured. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to raise a service dog which will one day change someone’s life, look for the Yellow Lab with the red vest walking on Centre Street. BY MICHAEL TANNER
O
n any day you might see me and River, a female yellow lab puppy, walking in downtown Fernandina Beach on Centre Street or at the Farmers Market on Saturdays doing our training. My wife and I raise and train puppies to become service dogs. We are often approached when we are out with the puppy by people interested in our experience as puppy-raisers. We explain that these excursions are critically important for a service puppy’s training because the puppies need to experience all the sights, sounds, odors, and distractions of the outside world on a continual basis. It’s all part of turning a puppy a dependable service dog. Of course, River has her favorite watering hole spots, knows where all the vendors hide their doggy treats, and has her favorite place to do her business. This is the socialization part of the process, but it has some important limits. The red vest means she is on the job. It’s not playtime, and she must understand that. As we walk about, we ask people to respect this, knowing full well how hard it is to resist petting a cute lab puppy! The 33 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
first 18 weeks of a puppy’s life are very crucial in determining that puppy’s suitability as a guide dog. It is a time to show the puppy love, challenge its mind with puzzles, and teach it basic commands, a soft mouth and bite, and reward good behaviors. It’s not all fun for the puppy raiser, with sleepless nights, the housebreaking messy phase, chewing, shedding, and leash training. If you are interested, be prepared to spend a lot of time with your puppy. Dog parks and service puppy-raising do not mix well. It takes only one bad experience with a more dominant dog to make a lifelong impression on that puppy. An overly submissive or fearful puppy will not become a guide dog. Puppy-raisers are also responsible for some monthly expenses. Service dog agencies pay for all veterinary expenses, but puppy-raisers pay for food and toys, which can add up to $50 per month. Not all puppy-raisers make it, and some need to return the puppy. Many with very good intentions find out that it conflicts with their priorities and responsibilities. You’ll also experience a little heartache when it’s time to give continued on page 35

up the puppy you have loved for many months so that it can finish its training. That’s the number one question my wife and I are asked: “How can you give her up?” For us, we think of the puppy as our child, whom we raised and is now heading off to college (Guide Dog School), getting a job, and becoming independent. It does gives us some comfort. We tend to assume the puppy feels the same human emotion upon departure. When River looks at my wife and I, we feel the love emanating from her. We have been her “Mom and Dad.” But the amazing thing about dogs is that they always live in the moment. If treated with love, and well cared for, they will adapt and become that new family’s loving member once again. This is when the puppy raiser gives one last hug and kiss, and whispers in her ear (“We love you, but it’s time to become a guide dog and help someone”) before sneaking off with tears in your eyes. Separation is part of the job requirement. Some agencies will offer the adult dog back to the original puppy raisers after its service life is over. We hope to get River back some day. So, is it all worth the effort in the end? When you get a notice from the agency that your puppy has graduated and has been place with a person who is legally blind, it will bring tears to your eyes and joy to your heart. River is the fifth guide dog puppy we have helped raise and she will be our last. It was an amazing experience that made us better, more loving, and more compassionate people as a result.

W
hen Donna and Mark Kaufman left Nashville for Amelia Island in 2001, what they missed most was “Writer’s Night,” an event Donna started at the local bookstore/café she managed. Every Friday, a parade of singers and songwriters performed to a packed house, sharing their music and the story behind the song. With nearly 30 years of devoted to helping people launch and operate successful, independent bookstores, it isn’t surprising that the Kaufmans’ love of words would spill over into a love of music. Over 10 years of “Writer’s Nights” in Nashville, the Kaufmans befriended entertainers who had it all: the gift of voice, a penchant for writing poignant lyrics, and instrumental talent. “One of our favorite venues was the Bluebird Café, an intimate listening room where patrons were shushed by the staff for talking while a songwriter was performing. That venue launched the careers of quite a number of Nashville stars,” the couple reminisces. After relocating here, Mark and Donna began to dream about drawing on their network of musicians in Nashville
to recreate the experience of the Bluebird Café right here on Amelia Island. Today we know the event as “An Evening of Story & Song.” The inaugural concert was for their family and friends at the Palace Saloon’s pre-antique store space and it was spectacular, but the second concert was competing with a loud rockand-roll band playing at Uncle Charlie’s next door. “That’s when we knew we needed to change venues” says Mark. “An appreciation of the song’s lyrics can only come from listening to the writer’s story, and to do that, you have to be able to hear!” The next two sold-out shows were at Amelia Community Theater, an ideal venue, but it was tough to find dates due to the many theatrical performances. “As we looked around town for suitable spaces, we were concerned that we would not be able to deliver the series.” However, the generous Founders at historic St. Peter’s Episcopal Church graciously shared Burns Hall, which for the next 10 years was transformed into an intimate listening room for the Story & Song performances. demands of their bookstore consulting business forced the Kaufmans to end the series. But just a few short months later, everything changed! “We had always dreamed of having our own bookstore,” the couple shares. “Independent bookstores are magical places, where connections happen, meaningful conversations occur, and books change lives.” When the space formerly occupied by Artistic Florist came available for purchase, the couple jumped! “It was far more space than we required, but when we discovered the upstairs space could accommodate events of all kinds for as many as 125 people, we knew ‘An Evening of Story & Song’ was on its way back.” Today, the Kaufman’s invite you to visit their Story & Song Neighborhood Bookstore Bistro, nestled at the entrance to Amelia Park, where you’ll discover a unique combination of bookstore, gift shop, café, secret garden courtyard, art gallery, and performance venue—all under one roof! bursts of color As the cooler weather begins to give way for spring, get a jump on the season by adding a little color to your garden now, with hardy plants like Alyssum and Flowering Kale. BY BETTY MORRELL
F
ebruary is the month of romance, hearts, and roses. When it comes to roses, I like mine with the roots attached. In fact, I like all my flowers with roots, as they become an everlasting reminder, filled with happy memories. At this point in my life, I am almost all about memories. In February, I like to see some color in the garden, and several annuals can be planted now to enjoy until the warmer weather. Alyssum is available through March. It has sweet-smelling tiny whiteto-mixed colors of pink, lavender, and burgundy. They are compact, mounding to 6 inches in height, and they can be grown in full sun to partial shade. For an interesting, stand-out plant, try Flowering Kale in red and white. It grows in full sun, with ruffled, featherleafed, or wavy-leafed white or red colored leaves. It grows to 8 inches in height and it is salt-tolerant. Of course, the ever-happy Dianthus adds striking colors of pink, purple, white, red, and it also comes in very pretty mixed colors. Plant them in full sun, and deadhead to encourage additional blooms. They

grow to 12 inches in height. These plants do not do well in wet conditions. A wonderful contrast to colorful annuals is Dusty Miller. It grows 10 to 12 inches tall in full sun and is salttolerant. My Dusty Miller lasted all summer and into the winter, and then for another year. Enjoy yours with some snapdragons, petunias, or colorful pansies. For the arrival of spring, pot some sweet little viola to enjoy on your patio or put it in the ground; they can tolerate more shade than pansies. Planting time is just around the corner. Time to turn your “armchair” gardening dreams into new beds or additions to old ones. It is such fun to see our visions come to life. Don’t forget to prepare your soil. Clean out winter debris, add good soil and fertilizer, then

put your new plants into the garden, sit back, and enjoy what you have done. A plant that caught my eye with its beautiful colorations is Grevillea “King’s Fire,” a favorite of the newer Grevilleas. This attractive spreading shrub grows 5 to 6 feet tall, with white stems and soft gray-green dissected leaves with 5-inch long individual, toothbrush typeflowers that are deep red in color. The deep red changes to orange-red on red stems. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun, either in the ground or a container. It’s good for planting near the seashore. Watch the hummingbirds arrive and dance around those red blooms. It’s a great addition to the garden. The Grevillea comes in other beautiful colors. Peaches and Cream has interesting flower clusters of peach and cream all year, while King’s Rainbow has exotic-looking blooms that flower spring through winter. “T
he moment you cross the bridge onto Amelia Island, something special happens,” smiles Sherene Casey beside her husband, Thomas. “We wished to retire by the beach, and when we ventured to determine where, the northeast was out because we’ve already lived there, Hawaii is just too far away, and Florida made us nervous because of hurricanes.” But their confidence in Florida rose in 2010 when Sherene’s sister moved to the Gainesville area, convincing the couple they had an evacuation plan in the event of a storm at the beach. The very next year, the couple visited Florida, starting and ending on Amelia Island. They found a great realtor in Geoff Haynes and toured a number of beautiful homes that were either too big, too small, or just not right. That’s when Geoff pitched the idea of building.

Sherene and Tom decided that building was ideal and they purchased a lot in Amelia Island Plantation. Soon they began work on house plans with John Cotner of Cotner Associates. After many months of planning, the Caseys had blueprints and met with William Rushing of Rushing Construction. “We interviewed so many builders in the community, but we went with our gut feeling, and we couldn’t be more pleased with William and his kindness and patience.” Speaking of kindness and patience, Sherene and Tom learned that home construction takes a good dose of both. “We had the perfect marriage until we started building,” says Sherene as she looks at Tom, and they both laugh. That’s when we introduce Robyn Branch of Robyn Branch Design, who showed up to mediate—or decorate—or maybe a little of both!

“We were still living in Texas, and it didn’t take us long to say, ‘Whatever you want, Robyn!’” Both Sherene and Tom agree that getting Robyn’s help was the best decision they made, and their new home’s design owes much to her talent. “Every time we walk in the door, it’s like we are on HGTV! Robyn pushed us out of our comfort zone, but we wouldn’t have this without her! She has an uncanny ability to know what we like, and about halfway through, we figured out to just trust Robyn.” The home’s open floor plan with loads of natural light— even in unexpected spaces like the butler kitchen and master closet—makes the home special. “The view was paramount for us,” says Tom, who especially appreciates the view of the oak canopy from the master suite on full-moon evenings. Other important design features include wide entryways and spaces between counters. “The Caseys planned for the future in their design,” explains Robyn. “If mobility becomes a challenge at any point, this home is equipped.” For today, the couple is enjoying the home’s other features, like the steam shower in the master, an outdoor beach entry 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

The pecky cypress beams in the entryway and living area are the most prominent features of the home’s unique design. “They add texture and break up a large space with architectural accents,” Robyn explains. The team did a great job of incorporating keepsakes important to Sherene and Tom, including photos of their many travels, Indian fabrication as an homage to Sherene’s heritage, and

Tom’s piano. The couple also integrated beloved furniture to the new design, including their dining room table and bedroom suites by Copeland Furniture, where Sherene’s cousin is the design director. All pieces are hardwood and manufactured in the U.S.A. Since they changed their address last July, the Caseys did opt for one hurricane “vacation” when Dorian visited in the fall, but that hasn’t stopped them from settling comfortably into island life. Favorite days include their six-minute walks to the beach, dining downtown, and of course, spending time together in their gorgeous home.

ast week I had the opportunity to meet my friend, Cortney Gray, for dinner before a business meeting. The moon was almost full and the sun had just set, so we knew we wanted a place at the beach. What better spot than Sliders Seaside Grill? We decided to try out their new concept, Tortuga Jack’s, upstairs from the main restaurant.
It had been a beautiful day, despite being wintertime in Fernandina, but the temperature was starting to drop as the sun disappeared. Just the same, we opted to sit on the balcony, and our server, Staton, brought over a heater to keep us comfortable. We knew we had made the right choice as the nearly full moon crept up over the horizon; it lit up the entire ocean. We ordered a round of margaritas with a trio of appetizers, and enjoyed the live music coming from the tiki bar below. As the music floated up, we put a hurting on the appetizer trio, which consisted of piping hot queso, guacamole, and fresh tomato salsa with a basket of fresh fried corn tortilla chips. Cortney ordered a strawberry margarita and I a house 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
margarita, both on the rocks, mine with salt and hers with sugar. They came in mugs, and the crystal-coated rims glistened in the moonlight. I couldn’t decide between the Enchiladas with Salsa Verde and the Steak Fajitas, and after much deliberation, I went in a totally different direction, choosing the Fried Chicken Tacos. Cortney went with the Chimichanga. The Chimichanga was stuffed with seasoned chicken and rolled in a flour tortilla, then fried golden brown. It was topped with red chile sauce and creamy queso, served with black beans and rice, and finished with a roasted corn and black bean salsa. It looked terrific and I was instantly jealous. My Fried Chicken Tacos were equally delicious, if not quite as aesthetically impressive. The chicken was breaded and fried to perfection and came served on flour tortillas with fresh shredded lettuce, diced fresh tomato, sprinkled with shredded cheese and drizzled with a house-made ranch and sweet chili glaze. The portions were more than generous, and with our hunger satisfied, we paused to enjoy the night sky. Since we still had work to do, we reluctantly decided to skip dessert. A friend of mine and her family were seated on the other side of the heater from us. They too had come for the view and a bite to eat. As Cortney and I caught up on the week’s events, the nearby kids finished their meals and shared a basket of crispy churros covered in cinnamon and sugar while their mother snapped some shots of the moon slipping out from behind a cloud bank. We wished we had saved room for such a treat, but we felt a tremendous sense of gratitude and peace sitting in the moon glow. Sliders and Tortuga Jack’s are on the beach at the roundabout where Sadler Road and South Fletcher Avenue meet. They are open seven days a week from 11 am to 9 pm, 11 am to 10 pm on weekends. Tortuga Jacks also boasts a Sunrise Balcony Breakfast on the weekends from 6 am to 11 am Friday through Monday.

ne of my family’s favorite hobbies is fishing, and you don’t have to go far to find great fishing on Amelia Island! The price is right, it’s fun, and it gets us all outside together. For this adventure, let’s paddle around some of Amelia’s best fishing holes and see what we can find. With fall in the air, you’ll usually find us with our toes in the sand and a fishing rod in our hands. “As the water cools, the fishing only gets better,” promises my husband, Captain Greg Simmons, who just happens to be a professional outdoorsman and fisherman. Beach fishing is a win for us because there’s something for everyone. I love the serenity of the coast, the kids are all giggles chasing birds, and Greg is doing what he loves best while helping us all catch something. “The incoming tide brings the clean water,” he explains, and we sometimes reel in a pompano or whiting, fight a bluefish, or show off a shark to a tourist passing by. If you want to try beach fishing with your family, you don’t need a whole lot—just an extra-large surf rod so you can cast beyond the breaking waves, fresh local shrimp or sand fleas for bait, and a sand spike rod holder. And the best part of beach fishing is that even if it’s a bad day fishing, it’s still a great day on the beach! Unique to Amelia Island is George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park. As you head south on A1A off the island, you’ll see the mile-long Crady pedestrian bridge running parallel to the road. We have great memories watching our youngest peer over the edge wide-eyed waiting for his catch. As a bonus, the fish you’ll catch from the bridge make some of the best eating. “This time of year, you can expect to catch a variety of fish, including black drum, flounder, trout, red fish and whiting,” Greg explains. To get started, you need a medium sized spinning reel on an inshore rod, fresh local shrimp or mud minnows, and a smile for the boaters passing underneath. Another option for fishing and spending time together is just plain simple: a cane pole in your neighborhood pond. Many of our funniest stories involve Mickey Mouse fishing rods or tree branches with a string and a hook that the kids made and were so proud when a bream bit the bread ball bait! Here on Amelia, there are many ponds and freshwater spots where you can take a small rod and some can corn kernels, bread, crickets, or worms and bring a smile to everyone’s face when an eager child gets a strike. For special occasions, we go a little fancy, put our boat in the water, and set off to fight a tarpon, mahi-mahi, or even a billfish. If you don’t own a boat, local charter captains are always ready to take you inshore or offshore for an unbeatable fishing adventure. On Amelia Island, we have access to 13 miles of pristine coast, the ocean beyond, and all of our inland waters. At our house, we try to take advantage of the nature around us, and fishing is the perfect adventure to make family memories. So wet a line, catch some dinner, and share a laugh and some time together.
