When I was young, my parents had seats for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and I would go with one of them to hear the orchestra perform three or four times each year. I loved the performances. For one thing, they were always on a Thursday night—a school night—and it was a great adventure for a ten-year-old to stay up late and drive into Hartford to Bushnell Hall. In those days, the conductor of the HSO was Arthur Winograd. Winograd, a founding member of the Juilliard String Quartet, was an enthusiastic conductor, and, as the performance progressed, his arms would wave, his reddish hair would fly, and he would almost split the seams of his tuxedo jacket. At that time, our house was full of music—pop, Broadway, and classical—and it was great to have the chance to hear excellent live musical performances. It remains one of my favorite things to do. My own tastes have widened through the years to include rock, jazz, blues, and bluegrass, and we try to hear live music whenever we can, bringing our kids when possible. Music is one of life’s sublime pleasures; it has a unique ability to move us, even elevate us, in an extraordinary way. The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival has been bringing extraordinary musical performances to our little island for over a decade now, and they embark on their twelfth season this month. We feel very fortunate to have enjoyed more than ten years of beautiful music from the acclaimed group of world-renowned musicians that have appeared here over the years. Artistic Director Christopher Rex has kept each season fresh with wonderfully innovative programming and various surprises every year. Over the years, we have enjoyed concerts at Amelia Park and the family concerts with our kids, and Hilary Hahn, Lynn Harrell, and the Eroica Trio without them. My musical journey has come full circle in a way on Amelia Island. In the last couple of years, I have enjoyed taking my father to concerts during the festival and have introduced him to the Linden String Quartet and other outstanding new performers. I have also had the pleasure of taking my mother, Elsie Kelly, to various concerts through the years, and she would often sit and quietly conduct from her seat. As many of you know, my mother passed away this winter, and we miss her a lot, especially when we are doing something that she loved, like listening to music. My mother was profoundly moved by music and shared that love with me and my family, and we will remember her and smile while we enjoy the festival this year. Also in this issue, you’ll learn about a committed group of people who have transformed the historic downtown with flowers; read about how Fernandina Branch Library serves the community; enjoy another of the “Great Homes of Fernandina” from Dickie Anderson; and much more. See you around the island!

MAY 11 - JUNE 1, 2013
ix Bach Suites, Five Beethoven Symphonies, Four violins playing a Vivaldi Concerto, Three Garage Band Musicians, Two Maestros, and One Licorice Stick make up just a small portion of the amazing Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival this year. For Artistic Director Christopher Rex, bringing unique and cleverly presented classical music to Amelia Island is a beloved challenge. “Our Festival has been built upon the dazzling array of artists who perform here each year,” says Rex, “in addition to our generous donors, dedicated volunteers, and thousands of music lovers who have attended our concerts over the past 12 years.” Rex joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as Principal Cello in 1979, the same year in which he became the first cellist to win the string prize in the biennial Young Artists Competition of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Since then, he has appeared as a recitalist and chamber musician across the nation. In 2000, his vision to inaugurate a chamber music festival on Amelia Island caught on quickly. From an intimate concert held at Eileen’s Art & Antiques that year, Rex and friends formed a small consortium of volunteers to set the festival in motion, and the rest is history.

Don Erdman Group
This year’s festival kicks off on May 11 with a free New Orleans-style concert at Amelia Park Concert Pavilion, featuring Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz. Performers Don Erman, Hal Johnson, Bill Rutan, and Stan Joseph will set your toes tapping to the music of Bourbon Street with favorites like “Sweet Georgia Brown,” Hard-Hearted Hannah,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Beyond the South, Hotlanta’s music has been enjoyed at clubs and jazz festivals throughout Europe and Asia. The festival continues with eleven more concerts in four weeks featuring an eclectic and talented group of internationally acclaimed classical musicians.
Six Bach Suites The Six Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach are some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions ever written. The Prelude from Suite No. 1 is the best known movement of the six, and it is widely heard on television and in films. Cellist Zuill Bailey will be performing the suites at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island on May 13 at 4:30 p.m., presenting to the audience a journey of sorts, in which he will chronicle the creation of Bach’s famous suites. Before the playing of each suite, the artist share entertaining anecdotes about the suites and explain how and when they were composed.
Bailey is widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world. His artistry, technical wizardry, and engaging personality have secured his place as one of the most soughtafter cellists today. A consummate concerto soloist, Mr. Bailey has been featured with the symphony orchestras of Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Dallas, Louisville, Honolulu, Milwaukee, Nashville, Toronto, Minnesota, Utah, Israel, and the Bruchner Orchestra in Linz, Austria. His performance of the Solo Suites for Cello of Johann Sebastian Bach is a repeat of his acclaimed performances at the Ravinia Festival and New York’s Le Poisson Rouge. Concert goers are encouraged to join Bailey and Rex for dinner at Café 4750 in The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, where they just might hear a spontaneous after-concert treat!
Two Maestros and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony Many of us don’t realize that the person who conducts the symphony is also an acclaimed and accomplished instrumentalist. This year’s festival features two of the greatest conductors of our generation, Robert Spano and Donald Runnicles, who are also consummate pianists. During his eleven seasons as music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Spano has elevated the ASO to new levels of international prominence and acclaim. Spano, who has conducted the greatest orchestras around the world, is

also music director of the Aspen Music Festival and School. Runnicles is general music director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He is also music director of the Grand Teton Music Festival and principal guest conductor of the ASO. David Coucheron, concertmaster of the ASO, has soloed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and he will perform with the two maestros on violin, along with Rex on cello. The two maestros come together for the festival to perform the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, in addition to pieces by Brahams, Schumann, and Haydn. The concert will be held at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m.
A Vivaldi Concerto for Four Violins A concerto for four violins by Guiseppe Vivaldi, composer of the famous “Four Seasons,” will be be presented at a very special concert featuring Robert McDuffie and the young artists he is mentoring. Performed at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church on May 17 at 7 p.m., the last movement of the “American Four Seasons” by Philip Glass will also be presented, along with music by Bach and Telemann. McDuffie is one of the premier violinists on the world stage today. A Grammynominated artist, he has appeared as soloist with most of the
world’s major orchestras, including the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics; the Chicago, San Francisco and St. Louis Symphonies; the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras; and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the North German Radio Orchestra, the Düsseldorf Symphony, the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony and Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala. McDuffie will be joined by pianist Elizabeth Pridgen and Rex on cello.
Christiania Trio with a Licorice Stick In this casual lunchtime concert, David Coucheron, along with Chistopher Rex and Elizabeth Pridgen, join Laura Arden, Principal Clarinetist for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Arden holds the endowed Robert Shaw Chair and she has been a featured soloist with the ASO in works by Mozart, Weber, Debussy, Copland, Bernstein, Finzi, Rossini, Shaw, and Michael Gandolfi. She has also performed with the Cleveland Quartet. She will bring her talent, her Trio, and her licorice stick to Café Karibo on May 21 at 1 p.m. Concert goers are encouraged to come early and enjoy lunch before the concert, then sit back and enjoy the music of Messiaen, Grieg, Verdi, and Beethoven.

Three Garage Band Musicians The world’s first classically-trained garage band, Time for Three, defies traditional classification. Performing music from Bach and Brahms to their own arrangements of the Beatles, Katy Perry, Kanye West, and Justin Timberlake, they have performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to jazz clubs, European festivals, NFL games, and the Indy 500, and for the very first time, at the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Time for Three, which includes artists Zachary DePue and Nicolas Kendall on violin, and Ranaan Meyer on bass, hails from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, the most elite music conservatory in the country. The concert will be held at Walkers Landing on May 22 at 7 p.m. Time for Three will also perform a free Family Concert at the Boys and Girls Club on May 23 at 4 p.m.
Beer & G Strings A favorite feature of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival is the “Beer & G Strings” series, and, this year, two concerts will be held – one at the historic and famous Palace Saloon, the other at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. On May 19, violinist Chee-Yun, with Andrex Diaz and
Wendy Chen, will be performing the Music of Mendelssohn, Glazunov, Kreisler, Piazolla, and Schoenfield. A legend and “rock star” in Korea, Chee-Yun’s flawless technique, dazzling tone and compelling artistry have enraptured audiences on five continents. Winner of the 1989 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the 1990 Avery Fisher Career Grant, she performs regularly with the world’s foremost orchestras. Pianist Wendy Chen has garnered critical acclaim for her recitals and engagements with leading orchestras worldwide, and reviews of her performances have exclaimed that “having pianist Wendy Chen on the program is a guarantee that sparks will fly.” Cellist Andres Diaz, awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1998, has made many orchestral and recital appearances with symphonies throughout the world. On June 2 at 7 p.m., soprano and two-time Grammy Award winner Sylvia McNair will be performing cabaret songs, both past and present, at the Omni Amelia Island. Her musical journey has taken her from the Metropolitan Opera to the Salzburg Festival, and beyond. Having appeared as a soloist multiple times with nearly every major opera company and symphony orchestra in the world, this songbird has flown the classical coop. She is retracing her star route

now with Gershwin, Porter, Sondheim and Bernstein. Rex is enthusiastic about her music, recalling fondly that he used to rock his baby daughter to sleep while listening to McNair’s albums. She will be performing with Jeremy Allen on bass, and Ted Taylor on keyboard. Other concerts include the Linden String Quartet on May 15 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 7 p.m., featuring the music of Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. This brilliant, young string ensemble has enjoyed remarkable success in four short years, winning the Gold Medal and Grand Prize of the 2009 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and several other prestigious awards. Violist and guest artist James Dunham will also perform with the ensemble, along with Rex. Dunhams’s rich background includes being a founding member of the Naumburg Award-winning Sequoia String Quartet, and subsequently violist of the Grammy Awardwinning Cleveland Quartet. An impassioned advocate of new music, he has premiered and recorded several works written for him by American composer Libby Larsen. Dunham is the only artist, with the exception of Rex, who has attended each and every Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival since the
beginning. The Beth Newdome Fellowship Artists Showcase and McDuffie Center Showcase will feature concerts of young, talented artists from these selective conservatories. Each year, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival presents a program that can satisfy a wide range of musical tastes, from traditional chamber music string quartets and larger chamber music ensembles—some including voice, guitar, and wind instruments—to non-traditional music that explores American folk traditions. This year, the festival introduced a winter season in February, which was extremely successful. Providing access to great music and educating the public on the richness of the classical music tradition are important parts of the Festival’s mission. Many of the guest artists live with families during their stay on the Island, and the success of the festival is contingent on the myriad of volunteers and donors who keep the event vibrant and eclectic from year to year. “We have developed an exciting schedule of established stars and new talent,” says Rex. “We strive to keep the festival fresh, innovative, and exciting!” To order tickets or view more information on the concerts, visit the festival web site at www.aicmf.com or call the office at (904) 261-1779.

AMELIA’S ATTIC CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN FERNANDINA BEACH
FORMER CATERER OPENS NEW PIE BUSINESS Karen Miller, formerly of Old South Yankee Catering, who writes the “Eating Scene” feature in the Amelia Islander magazine, has opened a new business at the downtown Fernandina Beach Market Place called Karen’s Pies. She is selling homemade pies every Saturday at the Market Place, open on N. 7th Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Miller takes orders for pies that customers can pick up at her booth, or they can purchase from her weekly selection that includes apple, mixed berry, strawberry rhubarb, sweet potato, pecan, and other seasonal varieties. Miller’s oversized pies are all made by hand and baked in glass pie dishes. Customers are asked to pay a $5 deposit on the dish, which they receive back when they return it, or receive $5 off their next pie. She also offers mini pies, which are a perfect serving for two. Miller is a two-time winner of the Desserts of Amelia contest, and also a food, travel, and lifestyle writer. She is also publishing a cookbook that is due out in early summer 2013. Miller closed her catering business last year to spend more time with her family, but soon discovered that she missed her customers, and missed baking pies.“Baking pies makes me happy,” says Miller. “Pie is the ultimate comfort food, and a true American tradition.” For more information, call (904) 614-7279.

Sylvia Gedeon started Amelia’s Attic, a familyowned furniture store, 20 years ago. Her vision was to create a local marketplace for people to buy and sell gently-used home furnishings. Sylvia’s mother, Vickie Poole, was involved at the store while she was alive, and customers still ask about her. Today, the store is operated by Sylvia and her daughter, Jennifer, along with Leslie and Deb as talented and helpful sales associates. Amelia’s Attic was the first home furnishings consignment store Jennifer Gedeon Crews and Sylivia Gedeon in Fernandina Beach, and soon expanded to include new furniture carefully chosen for its high quality and reasonable prices. The inventory at Amelia’s Attic is exciting because it is truly ever-changing. Many customers browse the store once per week to check out unique new arrivals. Amelia’s Attic now also offers the services of Deb Mischley, a local certified interior decorator, to assist customers with home design, re-design, and real estate staging. Visit Amelia’s Attic and congratulate them on their 20 years in business! They are located at 2164 Sadler Road, and they are open Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (904) 277-2095, or visit their web site at www.amelias-attic.com.
WADSWORTH’S AMELIA ISLAND CLOTHING LABEL OFFERS NEW STYLES Last year, Brenda DeMarco, owner of Wadsworth’s in downtown Fernandina Beach, teamed up with her daughter, Angela, to create their own clothing label, Wadsworth’s Amelia Island, featuring Fernandina Beach’s favorite mascot, the shrimp. “In July 2011, Angela drew a shrimp for me because we were discussing the fact that, in all my years of buying clothes for the store, I had never come across a shrimp logo on clothing,” explains DeMarco. She loved the drawing and kept it on her refrigerator for months. One day, DeMarco decided to take it to work. “That same morning, someone came in to sell me shirt with a turtle on it, and then another person came in with a salmon logo. Finally, I thought, ‘We’ll just have to make our own shirt with a shrimp logo!’” Wadsworth’s clothing line has been very successful and DeMarco has added new styles to their eco-friendly line, including ladies’ embroidered tees and yoga pants, in addition to their men’s cotton polos, and bamboo/poly polos, visors, and caps. “This new line was meant to promote a sense of pride in our hometown and demonstrate the importance of supporting our local community,” says DeMarco. “We’ve worked with local companies along the way, including P5 Productions and Hamilton Press.”

andra Baker-Hinton was an accomplished artist long before she opened Amelia SanJon Gallery at 218A Ash Street. She is a water media artist who works with both watercolor and acrylics, and, in addition, creates one-of-a-kind jewelry and “sea critter” ornaments by

fusing recycled glass. Nicknamed “The Turtle Lady,” the artist is also a naturalist, who sends out photography and nature stories a couple of times each month to interested readers. She loves to engage people by encouraging them to read her blog, which features her photography and goings-on around the island, from her sea turtle work to raising butterflies and squirrels,
and even local entertainment. She writes with an enthusiastic style: “Sea turtle hatching is about to start! Then things will really be rocking and rolling!” Anyone can sign up to receive her updates at www. ameliasanjongallery.com. She is also an excellent speaker and shares her love of nature with others in the community. So when does this busy woman have time to run a gallery? For Sandra, it’s all part of her life, as nature inspires her paintings and, in turn, her creativity inspires others to appreciate the natural world. After moving to Amelia Island, her commitment was to paint and to work with sea turtles. Although she has widened her commitment to include other wild creatures like monarch butterflies and orphaned squirrels, painting and sea turtles are still her first priority. Sandra opened the gallery in 2007, and she likes to focus mostly on local artists, nature pieces, photography, pottery, and vintage jewelry. She takes pride in having something for everyone, from greetings cards and small gift items to large paintings and sculptures. She has offered many painting classes over the years, and she sometimes shares her knowledge by showing step by step on Facebook how she created a painting. She does many pieces on commission, and even has three of her paintings hanging in a restaurant at Disney World in Orlando. Locally, her work has been chosen to represent Amelia Island’s Turtle Trot by creating a new turtle painting each year. “A love of the outdoors, inspired by growing up in the Appalachian Mountains of northeast Tennessee, guides me and becomes the underlying theme used throughout my work,” says Sandra. “The shapes, forms, colors, and textures in my work all reflect our natural environment.” For more information about the Amelia SanJon Gallery, call (904) 491-8040.

arie DeSoto moved her shop, Frugal Cachet, from its location on South 14th Street in August 2012 and created a new look in downtown Fernandina Beach. Marie has made her new shop a special place where shopping is fun, frugal, and relaxing, and anyone can browse happily among an eclectic array of antiques, collectibles, gift items, and art. Marie loves to see the parade of young women coming into her downtown shop looking for vintage clothing and handbags. “It’s a new trend we’re seeing. The young people really appreciate many of the older styles!” It may be clothing, shoes, and bags that first attract customers to Frugal Cachet, but Marie is an avid collector, and her love for history is obvious in the items she carries at her store. “I have been a collector all my life,” says Marie. “I’m fascinated with American history and the interesting items that tell the stories of the people who owned them.” One of Marie’s most remarkable finds is a set of Presidential china that was originally meant for Dwight and Mimi Eisenhower. President Eisenhower and his wife decided not to use the set and sent the china back to the factory, where the company then offered it for sale exclusively to their employees. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Marie moved to Fernandina Beach after working in the Bahamas. Frugal Cachet is open Monday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (904) 206-4444 or email marie@frugalcachet.com.

Marble Masters
andy McCommon and Bob Edwards opened Marble Masters as a tile setting company in 1987 when they saw the need for a company which could polish existing stone and restore its beauty. Along with restoration, Marble Masters began to provide quality craftsmanship in the fabrication of marble and granite for new surfaces. Mr. Edwards became a master craftsman by teaching himself the restoration process. In those days, only a handful of professionals possessed this skill. In 1994, Ms. McCommon’s son, Michael Bloodworth, came on board as an employee to learn the business. Later, when Mr. Edwards retired, he became part-owner of the company. A truly family-owned and operated business, Ms. McCommon’s daughter, Jennifer Stewart, began working in the office at the ripe old age of 13, and, today, they employ a staff of professionals who pride themselves on their customer service and commitment to quality. “We treat people the way we want to be treated,” says Mr. Bloodworth. Marble Masters offers fabrication of quartz, quartzite, soapstone, and other natural stones. “We pride ourselves on staying up to date with the latest trends in materials, edges, and finishes,” says Mrs. Stewart. “Our business has grown dramatically, and we have customers as far away as Hilton Head, Gainesville, and St. Simons Island, Ga.” The quality of their work has been spread through word-of-mouth, and that means hundreds of satisfied customers every year. Flowering Fernandina
A dedicated community group collaborates with the City of Fernandina Beach to beautify Centre Street. STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN MILLER
W
hile Eileen Shannon-Moore was traveling throughout New England, she noticed that a vital component of Northern small town charm was based on the region’s flowering plants and greenery. She found that nearly every historic community she visited was awash with hanging baskets and barrels of colorful blossoms. “Why don’t we have flowering baskets in Fernandina?” thought Shannon-Moore, whose Centre Street business, Eileen’s Art & Antiques, has always exhibited a colorful storefront. An artist by trade, Shannon-Moore strives for beauty in everything she does, and, apparently, so do many other Amelia Island residents because when she brought up the idea to friends and other downtown businesses, everyone was in favor of dressing up Centre Street. It wasn’t long before she had enlisted a group of volunteers to help with the project, and Flowering Fernandina was born. A collaborative project between the citizens and the City of Fernandina Beach, Flowering Fernandina is a grassroots community effort to beautify the downtown area with flowers and plants of all kinds – blooming hanging baskets, and baskets atop free-standing columns. Street-level flower beds planted by local gardeners will further enhance the appearance of the main and side streets. The planning began in 2010, when Shannon-Moore met a local gardener named Debbie Lott. They gathered some folks for a meeting or two, and then approached the City of Fernandina Beach about putting a flyer in the city’s utility bills telling residents about the beautification project and asking for donations. Since then, the group has raised enough money and gathered enough volunteers to help with the initial planting and watering of the baskets. Lott holds a training session for the volunteers on how to plant the baskets. “Besides planting, we need help with transporting, watering, and caring for the plants and flowers,” says Lott. “We also appreciate all donations, large and small, to continue our ongoing efforts.” Shannon-Moore is currently using her creative energy to acquire a golf cart to make all the watering easier on the volunteers. “We have around 20 volunteers on our committee,” says Shannon-Moore. “But we have 40 baskets to care for, and a street-ready golf cart will help us a great deal.” The group purchases the flowers and plants from various stores in the area and also through the City of Fernandina Beach. The baskets are planted all year round, utilizing seasonal flowers and greenery. In the winter, ornamental kale, pansies,
and petunias are grown in the baskets until spring, when they are replanted with colorful and hardy summer blooms. The local merchants are very pleased with the results of the Flowering Fernandina project. “Everyone loves Fernandina,” says Susan James of Pineapple Patch, a women and children’s apparel shop on Centre Street. “Visitors always want to come back, and the look of our city’s landscape makes a big difference.” Bill and Theresa Hamilton, owners of the Fairbanks House, a local bed and breakfast inn, have expressed their
satisfaction with the Flowering Fernandina program. “This is a great project,” says Theresa. “A colorful downtown is an invitation to come share the beauty of our community—its buildings, its people, its pride, and its spirit.” For more information about Flowering Fernandina, email them at floweringfernandina@gmail.com. To make a donation, make your check payable to the Historic Fernandina Beach Business Association (with a memo for “Flowering Fernandina”) and mail it to: Flowering Fernandina, 208 South 7th Street, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.

Where Community Begins The Fernandina Beach Branch Library brings the community together with something for everyone
BY WILMA ALLEN • PHOTOS BY WILLIAM RASER
I
n case you haven’t heard, our terrific little library downtown – the Fernandina Beach Branch of the Nassau County Public Library—will soon be getting a much-needed total makeover thanks to combined efforts of the City of Fernandina Beach, which owns the building; Nassau County, which runs the library; and the Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library, a 300-member organization of people who love it. All are chipping in to finance a major expansion and remodel which should break ground this year. To raise their share of the construction costs and additional funds for furnishings and equipment, the Friends of the Library has launched a $1.2 million capital campaign with the fitting title: “Your Library: Where Community Begins.” With the city,
county, and Friends of the Library working together, this is a true community partnership. Anyone who hasn’t visited the library lately will be surprised at the many different ways that it serves the community. Last year, the citizens of Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island made more than 107,000 visits to the library to do homework, prepare resumes, search for and apply for jobs online; take online tests and courses, apply for college and financial aid; obtain passports, find health and consumer information, visit e-government sites for Social Security updates, Medicare forms, and much more. Of course, they also browsed the stacks and borrowed thousands of books, periodicals, DVDs.
According to Library Director Dawn Bostwick, use of the library continues to grow, but funding has been cut severely in recent years. To illustrate how people utilize their libraries on an ordinary day, librarians across Florida organized “Snapshot Day” on January 30. On Snapshot Day in Fernandina Beach, scores of patrons were photographed as they browsed, read, worked on projects, studied, and surfed the Internet. Many provided written comments. Shannon, who was visiting the library with her children, wrote that “story time provides social interaction for my one and three year olds.” Lauren, another patron, said the library is “a tremendous resource for my young family. I’m so grateful for the library and its talented staff.” Paul agreed, saying of his daughter: “The library is helping to create a solid foundation for the rest of her life’s education.” Jack called the library “my salvation in the two decades we’ve been retired here. The library is my single largest and best source for information, entertainment, and relaxed leisure time.” Emily echoed that sentiment, noting that the library has “books to read, people to enjoy, and resources I need. I do not have a computer at home.” Another patron said, “It’s great for senior citizens, like my husband and me. We can’t always purchase books we’d like to read. Thank you!” “I improve my Spanish with the books and MP3s, and I found my job with the use of the Internet for an employment search,” James wrote. Veronica said, “It helps me stay connected to the community with information about services, activities and numerous resources. It fills a gap.” Added another patron, “It saves me money on books and movies. I also love the special programs such as the Civil War course.” The Friends of the Library are planning some exciting events to raise funds for its capital campaign. For information on how to donate or volunteer, stop by the library, call (904) 321-6529, or e-mail them at nassau.fbfollib@gmail.com.

The Duryee House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES
T
he Duryee House is the first house built in Fernandina after the Civil War. Like many houses built at the time, it is described as vernacular. Vernacular architecture is based on localized needs and construction materials, and reflects local traditions. Major Bedloe Crosby (B. C.) Duryee returned to Amelia Island after the Civil War. This is the first house he built. Later, he built a larger, grander house on the corner of Centre and Eighth streets. It was torn down to make way for a gas station. The house has a welcoming front porch that stretches across the front. Several houses in the Historic District have a cement step once used by those needing a step to climb into a carriage or to step out. The Duryee, Bailey, and Rutishauser houses still have their carriage steps. The ceilings in the original house were 13 feet, but they were lowered by later owners. In more modern times, the house has been pink with a soft turquoise ceiling to the porch. Some will claim the blue ceiling scares away the ghosts, but it more likely repels insects. Duryee was originally from New York. During the Civil War, he served as Assistant Adjutant General of the Federal Army and was badly injured at Antietam. He was eventually stationed in Fernandina and occupied the Reverend Archibald
Baker’s house on North Sixth Street. Ironically, Duryee was instrumental in saving the bell in Reverend Baker’s Presbyterian Church. It still rings today. In 1868, a presidential appointment as Special Deputy Collector of Customs brought Duryee back to Amelia Island. He found great opportunity and soon became a respected community leader. He built the Duryee Building in 1882. It was a substantial brick building at the base of Centre Street that housed the Custom’s House, the First Bank of Fernandina , and a printing press. He was elected to the City Commission and acted as British Vice-Consul. He was especially proud of his membership and support of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir and served as vestryman. His wife, a noted recluse, loved animals but, evidently, had little patience with people. She was known to take in all the island’s strays and donated a water fountain currently located in front of the railroad depot on Centre Street for the use of horses, dogs and cats, but not humans. Another story tells of seeing Mrs. Duryee walking down the street with a cat on a leash wearing spectacles! One of the island’s more persistent ghost stories is attached to the house. It is said that the image of an elderly woman in a rocking chair has been reported.

pretty powderpuffs The dwarf powderpuff is a versatile red flowering plant that will add color to your yard.
BY BETTY MORRELL

pril showers bring May Flowers, and how beautiful those flowers are! Everyone has been busy getting their gardens ready for the Shrimp Festival, putting their best foot (I should say flower) forward, as we do take pride in our gardens on Amelia Island. One of the most picturesque red flowering plants is the Dwarf Powderpuff plant (Calliandra emaraginata). This shrub fits in nicely in any yard, garden, or landscape. I adore these pretty plants! The branches grow outward in layers, with flowers and buds along each branch. The blossoms appear on and off all year (more often in the summer months), with buds resembling little red berry clusters that open into scarlet fluffy powderpuff flowers. This charming shrub attracts humming birds and butterflies and works well in almost any light, providing color even in partly shaded beds. Evergreen and cold tolerant, this plant is hardy for our area. It grows at a moderate pace, slower than the full-size powderpuff plant. The Dwarf variety can be kept at 3 feet tall. Although this plant can be grown in full sun, it seems

to do best in a part-sun/part-shade location. It works well as an accent plant by an entry, as a backdrop for smaller plants, or as a low- to mid-height hedge, or almost anywhere. Plant this shrub 2 1/2 to 3 feet apart, and plant it two feet or more from the house. It works well in containers, too. When planting, add some top soil or peat humus to the hole to enrich it around the root ball. You will only need to do occasional minor trimming. The plant produces seed pods, which can be cut off. Regular watering with time to dry out in between is recommended. Fertilize in spring, summer, and autumn with a good grade of granular fertilizer. You can supplement the feedings with bone meal and/or liquid fertilizer to promote heavier blooms, if you wish.

Gardenias are one of my very favorite flowers. I have come across a spectacular one with blooms 3 to 5 inches across. It is a native of China and grows in our area. Known as Bush Gardenia, Cape Jasmina, or Bunga Cina (Gardenia augusta, Gardenia jasminoides), this awesome gardenia has gorgeous dark-to-light green, opposite leaves on a shrub that can grow up to 6 feet, with almost an equal spread. The leaves are glossy and leathery. They bloom in mid-spring to early summer over a fairly long season. The flowers are white and turn to cream as they age and they have a waxy feel. This powerfully sweet fragrant bloom can perfume an entire room! Gardenias prefer acid, moist, welldrained soils. Use fertilizer for acidloving plants (like azaleas and camellias), bone meal, and fish emulsion. The best time to fertilize is in mid-March and again in late June to encourage additional blooms and to provide a boost to young plants for quicker growth. If you have any questions, e-mail bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

or Karen and Tom Ray, their home is all about family and community. The industrious and entrepreneurial Karen, who owns Bliss Cupcakery in Yulee, and her talented husband, Tom, superintendant of Karlen Custom Homes, decided to build their home at Fiddler’s Walk after owning another home there. “We loved the neighborhood,” said Karen. “Everyone looks after each other. It’s a close-knit community. It seemed natural to stay here.” Karen, Tom, and Allen Eldridge, builder at Karlen Custom Homes, worked hand-in-hand to create a house that would keep the family centered amidst busy schedules and a large group of extended family. Both Karen and Tom’s relatives reside nearby, and Sunday is family day at the Ray house.

As part of the great room, the kitchen, dining area, and living room allow guests to mingle and converse easily. Below: A formal dining room at the front of the home allows for more intimate gatherings.
“No matter how busy we are, we always spend Sundays cooking and enjoying quality time together,” says Karen. “I like to think our home is cottage-cozy, and welcoming. We’re pretty laid back, and we like our guests to feel comfortable here.” Karen and Tom love to entertain, and their home includes a very spacious kitchen with a 10-foot island, a family room, and a casual dining area that is home to the weekly Sunday dinner. The wide-open living space, with 8-foot doors along the back of the house that open up to an enormous patio and lighted pool area, is perfect for entertaining. At night, the area becomes an oasis of good times for friends and family.
Bliss Cupcakery is a successful and busy establishment. Karen and her staff are continuously baking cupcakes, wedding cakes, custom cakes, and other tasty treats for their customers in and around Amelia Island, but Karen never loses sight of what’s most important to her—her family and their home. While she and her husband worked on designing the space for her bakery, they also worked together on their house at Fiddler’s Walk. Karen had a vision of how she wanted their home designed and she worked with JAC Design Services to create a unique floor plan, which has since become a popular Karlen Custom Homes floor plan that appeals to both men and women. It is a

plan that is inviting, functional, and beautiful. The tiny details, however, are what make the house special. “The step ceiling has a luxurious feel, with crown molding and accent lighting, that makes the room warm and comfortable.” “The thing about Allen and Tom from Karlen is that they are completely hands-on when it comes to building a home,” says Karen. “They take part in every aspect of the process, from helping choose countertops to designing each room— every little detail is important to them. There is no aspect of any Karlen home that Tom and Allen don’t play an integral role in.” Allen says his company prides itself on using the finest building materials, especially when it comes to the bathrooms. “For Karen and Tom’s home, we used Schluter systems, an innovative method of installation for showers that guarantees there will be no problems with mold, mildew, or moisture.” Allen goes on to say that it was a collaboration between himself, Tom, and Karen that resulted in the energy-efficient “show
house” outcome of the project. “Tom built the custom fireplace mantel surround, laid the hardwood flooring and tile, and the seven-piece wood trim around the doors and windows,” says Allen. “Those details are what make the house special.” Fiddler’s Walk, located on Barnwell Road just off Amelia Island, is the perfect location for the couple. Close to the island’s beautiful beaches, restaurants, and shopping, it’s also just a stone’s throw from Karen’s bakery and many of her husband’s building projects. For this project, there was no need for an interior designer once the house was built. Karen has a knack for home decorating and she was enthusiastic about finding just the right furniture, accessories, and window treatments. “I like everything to be comfortable, cozy, and simple,” says Karen, who is drawn to clean lines and beautiful wood. With one granddaughter and a new grandson on the way, Karen and Tom are happily preparing for the next addition to their growing Sunday dinner guest list.

David’s
RESTAURANT & LOUNGE
With a comfortable, upscale ambience and New York-quality nouvelle classic cuisine, David’s Restaurant & Lounge is getting rave reviews. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
D
avid’s Restaurant & Lounge opened in November 2012, to rave reviews from diners, who have embraced their New York quality, nouveau classic cuisine. Owned by Deborah Gold and Myrta Defendini (who also own The Hoyt House), David’s features a private wine room that accommodates up to 14 guests, along with on- and off-site private catering for any occasion. Its mahogany woods, tile floor, and a copper coffered ceiling makes for a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience. My beau, Bruce, and I made a reservation on a Thursday evening because we also wanted to hear Grammy-nominated Aaron Bing on saxophone, who plays in David’s lounge. We started out with some cocktails at the bar, and then moved to the main dining room, which is a unique combination of Old World style and a contemporary, relaxed atmosphere. We started with an Amuse Bouche, a little bite of artichoke with mozzarella, on a crostini, and wrapped with prosciutto.
Everything at David’s is made in house—even the mozzarella is pulled by hand. We also enjoyed Foccacio with an amazing pesto dipping oil. Our server, David, suggested a Reisling, North by Northwest, that was surprisingly dry, perfect with our openers. A stuffed yellow tomato was next, bursting with basil, scallions, and mozzarella, presented on the plate beautifully. A Brie en Croute was brought to the table, served hot and gooey in a house-made puff pastry, with a fruit puree of blueberries, blackberries, and cranberries, and crostini. Next we sampled a glass of Macon-Villages Chardonnay, a delightful French wine, which paired well with our next item, Soft Shell Crab in a white wine, shallot, lemon and dill sauce, served with creamy Anson Mill grits. We especially loved the way that the crab was lightly dusted with flour, not battered. The dish really highlighted the sweet flavor of the crab. The grits were nearly the consistency of mashed potatoes—a perfect dinner accompaniment. Deborah brought us lemon sorbet as a little palate cleanser, and we took a little break from our savory meal to peruse their wine and menu offerings, which are presented on an iPad. What fun to scroll through and read all the details about their wine selections! I was yearning for more seafood, and the Seafood Risotto really hit the mark. Seared Scottish salmon sat atop a jumbo lump crabmeat and tomato risotto, that also included diver scallops and fresh, local shrimp. The seafood was perfectly cooked, rich, and delicious. Bruce’s entrée was Filet Oscar, an 8 oz. prime Filet Mignon, topped with jumbo lump crabmeat, béarnaise sauce, and prosciutto wrapped asparagus. Served with whipped garlic potatoes, the dish was splendid. The filet was beautifully cooked, rare, tender, just the way he likes it. Our wine pairings for these entrees were fantastic: a 2009 Rosenblum Zinfandel, a robust and peppery varietal, and for the seafood, and a 2011 Diseno Malbec, a big, outstanding wine that was perfect with the beef dish. We all know I can’t walk away without s sweet ending, and we enjoyed a trio of David’s favorite dessert offerings: Vanilla Gelato, Flourless Chocolate Torte, and Homemade Apple Tart, served warm, with walnuts, blackberry puree, and crème anglais. How could this meal get any better, you ask? We meandered back into the lounge, settling into a comfy sofa, listening to the smooth jazz of Aaron Bing. island entertaining
a Sunday luncheon in Fernandina Beach STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN MILLER
T
here’s a new entertaining trend going on in my circle of friends. It’s called the Sunday afternoon luncheon. Because so many people I know are busy all the time, Sunday is the perfect day to wind down a little and get together for a meal.
I recently hosted a Sunday luncheon at my friend Julie’s house. She lives in the historic downtown, and her dining room is on the second floor of her house, which features a lovely view of an enormous live oak tree and her eclectic neighborhood. Our plan was to enjoy
Wild Mushroom Soup
our luncheon, and then stroll through Fernandina with our friends. There are many advantages to hosting a lunch party rather than a dinner party. For one, you don’t need large quantities of food or drink like you typically do at a dinner party. It’s fun to simply begin with a glass of wine or two, or maybe a mimosa. Some of my friends are vegetarians, so for this luncheon I decided to make a rich and creamy wild mushroom soup, served with a garden salad, crusty bread, and a mixed berry pie for dessert. The soup is earthy, and satisfying, loaded with an assortment of mushrooms, laced with sherry, and drizzled with white truffle oil right before serving. The salad is made from everything that grows in my kitchen garden: various lettuces, herbs, pea shoots, carrot curls and radishes, and even pansies, which are completely edible. The dressing is simply freshly squeezed lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. And the bread is from the local farmers market. We began our meal with a chilled Spanish white wine, spicy pimento cheese, crackers, and apple slices. After a little conversation, we moved to the dining room and opened a bottle of pinot noir, which paired nicely with the soup. Because our meal was casual and relaxed, we’re able to spend a great deal of time catching up with our dear friends. And, by the time we’ve finished the last piece of berry pie, we’re ready to link arms and stroll through downtown. It’s a lovely, new way to entertain!
68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MAY 2013
Ingredients 2 lbs. sliced wild mushrooms, any variety 3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 3 cups sliced leeks 3 cloves finely minced garlic 6 cups vegetarian broth, or more 1/2 cup dry sherry 2 cups heavy cream 1 tsp. dried thyme Salt and pepper to taste White or black truffle oil Chopped Italian parsley Preparation In a large pot, sauté the wild mushrooms with the dried thyme on medium heat in the olive oil until golden. Remove them from the oil, then sauté the leeks and garlic in the same pot until translucent. Add the mushrooms back to the pot, and then sprinkle the flour over all and stir with a wooden spoon until the flour begins to “cook”. Slowly add the vegetarian stock and the sherry and stir until well mixed and heat gently, until soup gets bubbly and thickens. You want to taste the soup as you’re stirring, to make sure all the alcohol is cooked off. Add the heavy cream, salt and pepper to taste, until heated through. Do not boil. The soup can be made in advance and heated gently right before serving. To serve, ladle soup into bowls, sprinkle with chopped parsley, and drizzle with a bit of truffle oil. This soup is very rich, so portions can be modest. Serves six. For another Sunday luncheon recipe, visit www.ameliaislander.com.
