An island of many personalities, one of Amelia Island’s more fascinating aspects is its rakish pirate lore. In addition to being a pristine beach destination, an elegant retirement community, and a Victorian seaport with an architecturally significant downtown, Amelia Island has a deeper history than most Florida beach communities. Discovered by the French and subsequently captured by the Spanish, Amelia Island’s unique location as a Spanish port just outside U.S. territory made it a haven in the early nineteenth century for smugglers trying to circumvent the American embargo on foreign shipping. Its volume of trade and its position as a key stopping-off point for ships going to and from the Spanish territories to the south made it an attractive destination for pirates and other scoundrels. Much of the island’s pirate lore is shrouded in mystery, but historians report that LouisMichel Aury, a privateer (an officially sanctioned pirate) hired to harass Spanish shipping by South American revolutionaries, sailed into Spanish-controlled Fernandina and raised the flag of the Mexican revolutionaries (making the distinctive blue-and-white checkered flag one of eight different flags that have flown over the island). He was soon dispatched by a flotilla of American ships acting for Spain, but his short-lived rule is part of the island’s rich history. Karen Miller has investigated much of Fernandina’s pirate mythology, and she shares the results of her work in this month’s cover story. Aury certainly wasn’t the only pirate to set foot here. Did you know that Gregor MacGregor, a founding father of sorts on Amelia Island (he drove out an aging Spanish garrison ahead of Aury), was also a privateer sanctioned to attack Spanish shipping? Karen does a great job setting down what we know about the pirates of old that lived here, and sharing some interesting legends. And let’s not forget the Fernandina Beach Pirates Club! The club takes center stage each year during the Shrimp Festival, but they also do a lot of charitable work during the rest of the year. We thank them for their help with this article, and many thanks to Paul Massing and Steve Leimberg, who shared their wonderful pirate paintings and photographic pirate portraits, respectively. Also this month, we learn about The Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach and its affiliates, and their involvement in our community; we offer a Father’s Day portrait of a dedicated dad who is about to turn 100; and a “Great Homes of Fernandina” feature from Dickie Anderson on the historic Florida House Inn. We also have a magical “Backyard Adventure” with Kayak Amelia, a lovely “Island Home,” and much more. We hope you enjoy. See you around the island!

The Legends and Fol klore of Fernandina BY KAREN MILLER
irates, pirates, everywhere! Scoundrels and bawdy women! These are the people who made Fernandina part of the Buccaneer Republic, a place where stories and legends were made. No matter where you travel on Amelia Island, you are bound to come across a historic landmark, a wizened storyteller, or even a real “pirate” bringing to light the vast and fascinating folklore of Fernandina Beach. But why are most of these stories considered legends and folklore? Why are there so few historical accounts of pirates and scoundrels on Amelia Island?
PHOTOS BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
P
Frank Ofeldt, historian at Fort Clinch State Park, states the obvious. “If you were a pirate, carrying out illegal activities, you wouldn’t keep a journal of your endeavors,” says Ofeldt. “On a pirate ship, the only person who could read or write was most likely the quartermaster, the person who navigated the ship, read the maps, and kept notes. He would be paid very well to carry out his mission. The last thing he would want to do is record what they were actually doing.” 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JUNE 2014

Clockwise from top: Drawing of Louis-Michael Aury; circa 1724 etching of Captain Edward “Blackbeard” Teach by Benjamin Cole; etching of pirate ship battle.
Pirating was hardly a glamorous occupation, although you wouldn’t think so by the way that Hollywood has portrayed its buccaneers. “I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly... stupid,” says Captain Jack Sparrow in the popular movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean. But real pirates were not such brilliant conversationalists. They were desperate men, usually poor and hungry. Most pirates did not have chests full of gold coins; they generally had very little at all, and they stole things to sell for money. A pirate was simply a thief operating on the high seas. A privateer, however, was considered a “legal” pirate. He sailed on an armed private ship licensed to attack enemy shipping. Louis-Michel Aury was one such of those privateers. He was originally in the French Navy, but, in the early 1800s, he worked on privateer ships and eventually accumulated enough money to become master of his own vessel. He decided to support the Spanish colonies of South
America in their fight for independence from Spain, and, in April of 1813, he sailed from North Carolina on his privateer ship with Venezuelan letters-of-marque to attack Spanish ships. He eventually sailed into the port of Fernandina, where he overthrew the Spanish and raised the Mexican flag on September 21, 1817, just one of the eight flags that have flown over Amelia Island. Other pirates and privateers who were thought to have spent time in Fernandina include William (Captain) Kidd, Jean LaFitte, Gregor MacGregor, and Captain Edward (Blackbeard) Teach. Any pirate or sailing vessel that sailed along the east coast was bound to make a stop at the port of Fernandina, since it was a bustling seaport and the perfect place to load up on supplies while having a drink (or ten) at a local watering hole. During the early nineteenth century, Florida was still under Spanish rule, putting it outside the America embargo on foreign shipments. Cargo was unloaded and loaded freely here, then sent out onto the high seas filled with “riches” and pirate booty.

Left: “Pegleg” stands in downtown Fernandina Beach as a reminder of the island’s purate history. Right: Early plat map of what is now known as Old Town Fernandina, where much of the island’s pirate activity was centered.
Thea Seagraves, the Amelia Island Museum of History’s volunteer coordinator, has come to know Fernandina’s pirates and scoundrels quite well. “Louis-Michel Aury was a privateer, who came here to the island, we know that for sure,” says Seagraves. “But his bastard son was the real criminal. His name was Luke, and he was a rapist and murderer. He was due to be hanged for his crimes, but then he slit his own throat! He lived through that injury, and, indeed, was hanged after all. It’s a grisly tale. Many people believe that his ghost is the one that haunts the museum today, which used to be the old jail.” Seagraves goes on to say that there are many tales of ghosts and buried treasure in Fernandina, but nobody knows the exact stories because they are still considered folklore and myth. In a paper filed at the museum written by local writer Alice P. Youngblood, Youngblood tells a tale that she heard from former Nassau County Commissioner John T. Ferreira. “Old Mrs. Lasserre, mother of Captain Tom Lasserre, pioneer pilot and citizen of Old Town, lived during the pirate days,” writes Youngblood. “It seems that Old Town always put on a gala
appearance when the pirate ships came into the harbor. The pirates bought freely all of the wares the citizens showed them, and they paid handsomely in gold for everything they bought. They got their supply of fresh meat and vegetables from this island. Always a dance was given. The pirates brought gifts to the citizens of bolts of woolens, silks, and brocades.” And when the pirates came in, there were plenty of bawdy women to greet them. “From the earliest years, prostitution was very common,” states Ofeldt. “In Fernandina, in the mid-1800s, there were twice as many brothels as churches.” Ofeldt, who specializes in Civil War history, tells a tale of a fight that broke out involving Fernandina’s ‘fallen angels,’ or ‘soiled doves,’ as the prostitutes were commonly called. “In 1863, the Navy was in port,” says Ofeldt. “There were lots of warships in the area. The Navy men frequented the brothels, and the Provost Marshall was called to Fernandina about some disturbances that were going on. Apparently, these brothels were considered the Army’s territory, and fights were breaking out. One of the fights was particularly bad, in one

of the brothels in Old Town on Ladies Street. There was quite a ruckus. Sailors and women were pushed through the windows of the brothel and they were lying on the street, in various states of undress.” Ofledt goes on to say, “There are many letters and diaries we have collected that speak of these women, in which they are continually called ‘the black-haired Spanish beauties.’ Because of the eyewitness accounts of goings on in the brothels, the Christian Commission tried to close them down. The prostitutes realized that the outcome for them could be ruinous, so they attracted more customers by charging half price on Sundays, going from one dollar to fifty cents. They even handed out wooden tokens to draw customers to their houses of ill repute. That was certain to keep the men in their company, instead of going to church!” In the early 1800s, Old Town was home to a very special woman, who was considered a witch. She specialized in herbal medicine and healing, and also fortune-telling. Her name was Felipa, and she knew everyone in town. Seagraves takes

on the persona of Felipa as a first-person presenter for the museum. “Felipa could have been of Gullah Geechee decent, or perhaps an African princess, but she had special powers,” says Seagraves. “Felipa was known to say, ‘I have all the powers of my ancestors. I know this land; I know the wind.’” Seagraves goes on to say that sailors would visit Felipa as soon as they arrived in the port of Fernandina. She would read them their fortunes and tell them whether they would get rich, or perhaps find a beautiful woman. Felipa supposedly once healed a very powerful man. Because of her ability, it was said that her good luck and power increased. But Felipa also cured the sick with herbs and spells, delivered babies, and took care of the bawdy women of Old Town. Today, members of the Fernandina Beach Pirates Club bring back all the memories of the raucous pirate days from the early 1800s. The club has been around for forty years, and the organization is involved with civic and charitable projects on the island and in Nassau County. But the members also spend time strolling Fernandina’s downtown business district

on weekend afternoons, handing out beads and shouting “Arghhh!” and other authentic pirate greetings, sometimes stealing rings from women’s fingers, and then giving them back, all in good fun. The pirates call themselves “Amelia Island’s Goodwill Ambassadors to the World,” and their primary focus is promoting the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival every year. In addition to their involvement with many local charity events, the club even sponsors its own annual scholarship contest for Nassau County high school seniors. They also make appearances at community and private events, and support a blood drive with the Blood Alliance on a regular basis. Local artist Paul Massing has been enthralled with pirates since he was a young boy. Captivated by their rowdy life on the high seas, Massing and his peers formed a pirate gang when he was a teenager in the 1940s. “Pirates have always fascinated me,” says Massing. “With my teenage boyhood friends, we used to do a drama of a pirate gang. Bare-chested costumes were developed by wearing our sweatshirts as pants.
Beards and faces were made using charcoal from the previous night’s marshmallow roast. The hats were rumpled, insideout sun caps.” Massing, who calls himself an octogenarian without revealing his exact age, says the pirate allure hasn’t left him, even after all these years. “Many years later, to add to my fascination, I found my retirement home on Amelia Island to be infested with pirate lore, and Pirate Club members who inspired me to do portraits of any who would dare to sit for me!” Massing has painted many members of the Pirate Club, and it’s by far one of his favorite projects, capturing their capricious characters and preserving Fernandina’s folklore and folly. Perhaps our current Amelia Island pirates are mildmannered compared to the pirates that pillaged and plundered two hundred years ago, but that’s okay. Their mission today is to help us recall those wild and lawless days of the 1700s and 1800s—here in Fernandina—when pirates ruled the seas and bawdy women ruled the nights.

AMELIA ISLAND BLUES FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2014 HEADLINERS
BEST BUDDIES “EVENING AT SUNSET” PROM AT RESIDENCE INN Best Buddies is an international volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-on-one friendships, integrated employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Best Buddies-affiliated high schools pair students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in one-on-one relationships with their high school peers. On April 27, the Residence Inn Amelia Island hosted a very special “Evening at Sunset Prom” for members of the Yulee and Fernandina Beach high schools’ Best Buddies programs. “Because of the generosity of our General Manager, Bob Hartman, we were able to provide a real prom for these special students,” said Dottie Richards, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Residence Inn Amelia Island. The hotel provided a buffet, popcorn machine, beverages, and cake, along with decorations. Centerpieces were provided by Nicole Archard. DJ Eric Harris provided the music, and a photo booth was provided by Photo Fun Booth. Lori Venerdi from Fernandina Beach High School and Karen Cusick from Yulee High School were the Best Buddies Coordinators. This is the first year that a formal prom has been organized for students with disabilities and their peers from both schools.

The Amelia Island Blues Festival returns to Main Beach on September 12 and 13 for two great days of music. Four award-winning artists are set to headline this year’s event. Curtis Salgado, winner of the 2010 Blues Music Award, effortlessly mixes blues, funk, and R&B with a delivery that is raw and heartfelt. Grammy Award and Blues Music Award nominee John Primer, a Chicago blues legend, is one of the finest performers of Chicago blues today. Samantha Fish won the 2012 Blues Music Award for “Best New Artist Debut” for her album, “Runaway.” Bernard Allison’s acclaimed career includes decades of performing the blues. “We are very excited to have these world-class blues artists at our fourth annual event,” says Jeff Malone, president of the Amelia Island Blues Festival. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Friday, with music starting at 6 p.m. from Fernandina Beach’s “Blues in School” band with Johnny Robinson and Roger “Hurricane” Wilson, followed by The Mojo Roots. On Saturday, the gates open at 11:30 am, with music from 12:15 – 8 pm. In addition to the headliners, Ben Prestage will perform throughout the day, along with blues guitar prodigy Matthew Curry. For information and tickets, visit www.ameliaislandbluesfest.com.
TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN NASSAU CELEBRATES ITS 2014 GRADUATES Take Stock in Children Nassau celebrated its eighteenth annual Graduation Celebration on Tuesday, April 22, in the Yulee High School Auditorium. This year, forty-two high school seniors were presented with a Florida Prepaid College Scholarship because they had fulfilled the requirements of the Take Stock in Children program. Each of the students had maintained a 2.5 GPA or higher, attended school regularly, and met with their mentors on a weekly basis. Because of this, they have all been awarded a four-year Florida Prepaid College Scholarship, which they can use to attend any Florida public university. Kellie Boston of Boston Photography donated her time and expertise to provide professional photos for all of the Take Stock students. Chef Castleberry and his culinary arts class provided refreshments following the reception. “We are so grateful to the Publix Bakery in Yulee, Kohl’s and the “Kohl’s Cares” program, Yulee High School, and the Nassau County School Board for all of their help in making this event such a success,” said Deanna Gartenbush, Director of Marketing and Development for Take Stock in Children Nassau. (In the photo are Troy Morris, Dr. John Mazella, Fernandina Beach Middle School Principal, Colby Clemens, and Nick Volpitta. Standing are Leighla Leary and Haley DeVol.)

oraine King has spent over 40 years as a working artist and she maintains an active studio in her home. Her commissioned works include home renderings, in pen and ink, acrylic, and watercolor. A native of New Jersey and now a permanent resident of Amelia Island, King and her husband moved here in 2004. The artist received her B.A. degree in Art Education from William Paterson University and she was Art Director for the Shenendehowa Central School District in New York State. In Ohio, she founded The Dublin Area Art League. She also founded the Plantation Artists’ Guild & Gallery here on Amelia Island, where she shows much of her work, along with the Isle of Amelia Executive Suites and Amelia Island Plantation Real Estate, as well as her home studio. Why commission a house portrait, you ask? “Perhaps you have just purchased your first home or you have finally completed your dream home after years of planning,” says King. “Maybe you have feelings of nostalgia each time you see a photo of the place where you spent your childhood and
family gatherings. Perhaps it is your grandparents’ home, with the flood of memories that accompany it. A house portrait is a unique way to celebrate the heart and soul of your life—your home.” King works from photos of homes. The house portraits are then created in watercolor, acrylic, or pen and ink, in a period or contemporary style. Family members, pets, or special amenities can be incorporated in the portraits. “I paint on clay board,” says King. “That’s an environmentally friendly surface to work on, and it’s easily framed.” King’s house portraits take about six to eight weeks to complete, and she is especially busy during the holiday season. “I suggest if you’re thinking of having a house portrait done, it’s best to contact me well in advance. It’s quite a process to produce a meaningful work of art!” King has been recognized by The Schenectady Museum of Art, published in Early American Life magazine, and sold works in the American Folk Art Museum in New York City. You may make an appointment to visit her home studio by calling (904) 491-3737 or visit her website at www.loraineking.com.

hen Gianna Ragona-Suarez worked in the corporate world, she spent every evening teaching yoga at a local studio in Connecticut. After a while, she realized that she was meant to have her own yoga studio and put the corporate world behind her. Gianna came to yoga because of a car accident, which left her in a neck brace with severe migraines. She attributes her healing to the regular practice of yoga, and she experienced a complete recovery in a very short time. When Gianna saw that Go Yoga Amelia Island was for sale in 2012, she bought the studio and moved to Amelia Island permanently. Since then she has moved Go Yoga Amelia to a new location, a bigger and brighter studio off Sadler Road, which allows her to offer a wide variety of styles and levels to suit every person at every level. “I have a global view of yoga,” says Gianna. “I spent time in India, and the yoga I bring to Amelia Island is an ancient, classic style that joins body movement with breathing techniques. We offer a broad spectrum of classes, from beginners to advanced, and we focus on yoga as a process, along with wellness and nutrition.” Besides yoga classes, Go Yoga Amelia offers a comprehensive 200-hour Yoga Teacher Certification Course throughout the year, along with workshops and guest lectures from some of the best yoga instructors from around the globe. Classes are offered every day. For their complete schedule, visit www.goyogaamelia.com, call (904) 335-0539, or email Gianna at info@GoYogaAmelia.com.

Suntex Boat Club
ho doesn’t want enjoy the water on a lovely, sunny day? That’s the idea behind Suntex Boat Club, which was formed nearly five years ago by National Director Monty Kitchen. Folks who love the water and love boating don’t always enjoy the work that goes along with owning a boat, but the only concern for boat club members is simply to enjoy boating with family and friends. All the fun of boating with none of the hassles! Monty and his wife visited Amelia Island when they opened this location in Spring 2013 (four other locations include three in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and one in Atlanta) and fell in love with the island. A few months later, they moved to Amelia from Dallas. Unlike the big-city life they were used to, the island was a breath of fresh air. “We’ve met so many people since we moved here,” says Monty. “The boat club is a great opportunity to meet fellow boaters. Membership includes boat safety classes, fishing clinics, and other social events provided throughout the year.” Members pay a one-time initiation fee and then a monthly fee, which enables them to use any of the Suntex boats. “We have something for everyone here,” says Monty. “With the boat club, the only decision you have to make is what type of boat you want for the day. And tomorrow, your boat can be something different!” In addition, Suntex’s sister company, Suntex Watersports, offers daily boat and wave runner rentals. For more information, call (904) 572-3216 or visit online at www.suntexboatclub.com or www.suntexwatersports.com.

Founded to serve the community, The Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach and its affiliates enjoy friendship and fun, too. BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTO BY ELIZABETH WILKES PHOTOGRAPHY
“T
he Salvation Army requested ‘angel tree’ gifts for disadvantaged senior citizens,” remembers Jeri Johns, president of the Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach. “I was overcome with emotion by the items my angel listed— deodorant, socks, new pajamas. It touched me how little it was going to take to make his Christmas a good one.” The selfless emotion in Jeri’s remembrance mirrors the sentiments of the two hundred members of the three Amelia Island Woman’s Clubs, all of whom are committed to living each day to accomplish something—not merely exist—as reads the pledge of the Junior Woman’s Club. “The Woman’s Club, the Junior Woman’s Club, and Little Women fall under the umbrella of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), which originated in 1890 after newspaperwoman Mrs. Jane Cunningham Croly was denied entry to a banquet honoring Charles Dickens because she was a woman,” explains Junior Woman’s Club President Donna Runyeon. Croly founded a club for women only in order
represent their interests and encourage friendship. This ignited the birth of similar clubs across the nation, and GFWC unites them and supports their service efforts. “The Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach was organized in 1920 by 27 ladies, who met in the city library with the goal of doing everything possible to improve the city,” explains Jeri. In 1960, the Woman’s Clubhouse was constructed on Jean LaFitte Ave., just behind the Atlantic Recreation Center. Today the club’s members engage in volunteer work in the community. “We encourage membership, but we emphasize that we are ‘service-oriented’ first and foremost,” she stresses. Annually, the club grants college scholarships, participates in the Special Olympics, hosts Take Stock in Children’s “Christmas Glow,” helps Keep Nassau Beautiful, and supports Nassau County Public Schools, just to name a few things. If you are interested in joining The Woman’s Club, email fernandinabeachwomansclub@gmail.com for continued on page 43.

Leonard McNutt has seen a lot of the world in his almost 100 years, but family and fatherhood still matter most.

Father’s Day story BY KAREN MILLER

O
n the day that Leonard McNutt was as ix born, his father rode his horse six miles from his home in Stamford, Texas to ed retrieve a doctor. The doctor then hitched les his horse and buggy, and drove the six miles ard back to the house, only to find that Leonard had come into this world on his own. The y. year was 1914, and it was Christmas Day. 0th McNutt will celebrate his 100th ving birthday this year on Amelia Island, having moved here from Melbourne to be closerr to his daughter, Mary Lynn Torchia. Since his arrival, he and Torchia have spent every day nds, together, reminiscing about family, friends, and travel. “My father has traveled to over ed an 40 countries,” says Torchia. “He has lived extraordinary life.” Torchia believes thatt the key to her father’s long life is his attitudee and h I was growing his open heart. “Daddy was so easy going when up. I never felt insecure or unhappy. He always did exactly what he set out to do; he pursued his dreams and he encouraged me to do the same.” McNutt grew up on a cattle ranch and attended a tworoom school house, what he calls a “country school,” before
m moving into town and attending the “city sc school.” He met his wife, Pauline, in high sc school. They were married in 1938. A year la later, Mary Lynn was born. Torchia recalls h her early days in Texas. “My grandmother’s h house had a cold water pump in the kkitchen, but no indoor plumbing. They h had electricity, though. They had a good life tthere in Stamford. Even during the Great Depression, they grew their own vegetables, they raised animals, and they even had a car.” Before being called into active military duty, McNutt had a career as a high school principal, teaching history, geography, and mathematics. He retired in 1960 as a full colonel and spent many years traveling wi with Pauline, seeing places most people only d b l d the Great Wall of China and the Great dream about, including Pyramids of Egypt. One of those trips included a “See America First” expedition with his daughter, in which they traveled across the United States. Although McNutt traveled far from his family for long continued on page 67.

G R E AT H O M E S O F F E R N A N D I N A
The Florida House Inn BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES
T
he Florida House Inn is considered the oldest continuously run inn or rooming house operating in Florida. The main structure was built around 1857 by the Florida Railroad and initially provided housing for railroad employees. Its architectural style is vernacular with Greek Revival adaptations. The basic design is rectangular with a gabled roof. The doublegalleried porches are distinctive. The inn was an essential part of David Yulee’s ambitious efforts to establish Fernandina as a terminus for the state’s first trans-peninsular railroad. The Florida House was a center of activity and the primary place to stay for both employees and visitors. Florida’s first railroad linked Cedar Key and Fernandina. Yulee’s dream was connecting the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico by land to provide a safer and more direct route for the transport of goods. The dream was close to fruition when the Civil War abruptly stopped all forward progress, and much of the newly completed railroad was torn up for the war effort. The inn was a boarding house for Union officers during the Civil War. After the war, Major Leddy, the Provost Marshall of Northern Florida, and his wife bought the property and continued to operate it as a hotel. In 1865, they added living space for themselves and a dining room for guests. The dining
room proved very successful and served such notables as the Carnegies, Morgans and Duponts. The Carnegies were said to stay at the Florida House, play at the Palace Saloon and pray at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The Florida House has never been a private residence, but has always offered rooms as an inn or a boarding house. It is one of the grand antebellum buildings remaining on Amelia Island. Several additions were made through the years to accommodate the popularity of the island and the inn. The building was refitted as apartments. In 1990, it was sold and entered into a long process of restoration and, eventually, opened as a popular bed & breakfast inn. The building has survived hurricanes, tough financial times, severe weather, and the Civil War. Its survival is testament to the quality of the original building. The inn is a veritable museum of events in Amelia Island’s history. It is said that José Marti planned his invasion of Cuba while staying at the Florida House in 1883. President Ulysses S. Grant entertained at the inn when visiting his friend, David Yulee. During the glory days of the movie industry in Jacksonville, notables who stayed at the Florida House included Laurel and Hardy and Mary Pickford.

in the garden
perfect perennials Despite hot summers and occasional hard freezes in winter, hardy summer perennials provide lasting color on Amelia Island. BY BETTY MORRELL
W
e have had a wonderful spring, with rains that gave all our early bloomers a great start. Flowers were coming up everywhere last month, and they have now put on new growth, with buds opening. I’m often asked what perennials will survive the heat of summer and the cold of the winters on Amelia. There are a lot of wonderful summer perennials, and I want to mention a few that can be planted now and provide your garden with lots of color for the summer and fall. Let’s start with the stalwart perennial: Salvia Indigo Spires, with its deep purple blooms that stand tall through the summer heat. Mexican Petunia (which can be invasive when it re-seeds), Plumbago, and Society Garlic will add cool colors to your borders. Rudbekias, Summer Phlox, and Purple Cone Flowers will continue to bloom if spent blossoms are cut off as they fade. Whirling Butterfly Plant (Guara), when pruned back, will put on a fresh display the following month. Butterfly Weed, Cigar Flower, and Persian Shield make a great combination. Don’t forget the Shrimp Plant, which comes in white,

yellow, and orange. Blue Daze, Pentas, and Scaveola are beautiful and will bloom profusely. Lantana will flower and spread nicely to fill in any bare spots and bloom continuously. (This plant is known as an invasive weed.) Golden Dew Drop (Duranta) is a shrubby perennial that shows off all summer long. Add a Firebush (which likes a little shade in the heat of the day) and Turks Cap (malvavisens penduliflorus), and you’ll have a trio of plants that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. The Hibiscus, a tropical plant, comes in many colors, shapes, and sizes, and it can make a real statement in your garden either alone or in mass planting. Although it might die back to the ground in hard freezes, check it in early

spring and you’ll see small leaves poking their heads through the dirt, preparing for another season of magnificent color. For shady areas, there are many varieties of ferns. One of my favorites is the Holly Fern. Grasses of any shape and size also fit nicely into many gardens. With tropical plants, there are not too many that can grow in full sun. However, besides the Hibiscus, Canna Lilies make a wonderful statement mixed in with your everyday sun plants. With so many outstanding Canna, you can fit one into your landscape! The Canna generalis grows in areas with full sun and some soggy soil. (If you don’t have a soggy area, water it often.) “Ermine White” is a fast-grower, with dark green foliage and white blooms that last through the summer. “Richard Wallace” produces apple-green foliage and yellowish-orange blooms, while “Black Knight” has blood-red blooms that stand out against its attractive, dark burgundy foliage. For a tropical look, the Canna is a must in the garden. As always, please e-mail me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. And Happy Gardening!

Passion from page 27. more information. New members are required to attend a meeting and submit an application. About 65 years ago, a club for high school girls formed. Little Women of Fernandina Beach has a tremendous presence in our community and a fine reputation. “We are teaching our members to serve and give back to our community, as well as to be leaders,” explains Teresa Spence, chair advisor for Little Women and a member of the other woman’s clubs. At each meeting, the girls are educated on a topic pertaining to females, including a self-defense class demonstrated by the Marines, ballroom dancing, and Breast Cancer Awareness. While a major focus of the clubs is on service, there’s lot of fun, too! “The Little Women enjoy two dances each year, and the girls love the annual variety show of skits, whose proceeds this year were donated to Girl Power 2 Cure and the University of Florida Dance Marathon,” says Teresa. The other organizations with which the Little Women work include Friends of the Library, Simmons Road Cleanup, Toys for Tots, Quality Health, and Savannah Grand. Just five years ago, the Fernandina Beach Junior Woman’s Club formed as a place for younger ladies—many are mothers with children at home —who are passionate about service. This chapter is growing and hoping to expand. “We need more ladies who are interested in giving back and supporting non-profits through hours of service, buying and donating goods, and offering their unique talents to help others,” explains Donna. “I really enjoy the work we do, especially the holiday party for the Peck Center children.” If you are interested in getting involved with this group, visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ GfwcWomansClubOfFernandina. “We need community support for all our endeavors,” notes Jeri, speaking for the three clubs. “As you come across their projects, remember the good work these ladies—or, my sisters in womanhood—are up to. You are invited to join the club!”

A home with
heart

T
he old adage “home is where the heart is” was never more true than for Doris and Peter Maye and the St. Marys, Georgia marshfront property they call home. The couple was living in Atlanta when they began an exhaustive search for the perfect coastal home. They considered Maine, Charleston, Savannah, and other well-known locations, but a trip to Amelia Island’s sister town in 1995 sealed the deal for St. Marys. “The property we found in St. Marys had been for sale for a long time,” says Doris. “It’s as if it had been forgotten about.” But Doris and Peter knew it was exactly what they had been searching for, and they built their house there in 1998.
The connection to the land and the sense of place at the property is significant. The Mayes called their place “Ballastpointe” because it was positioned at the point in the river where 1700’s-era sailing ships unloaded their ballast stones prior to entering the port of St. Marys. Ballast stones are used to keep the ships balanced; they are loaded and unloaded as the ship takes on or depletes its cargo. Ten years after Ballastpointe was built, Doris and her designer daughter, Dana Hawthorne, opened Ballast Pointe Trading Company in Kingsland, only a short drive away. The main house was a collaboration between the Mayes and their talented master craftsmen. Builder Terry Stover

specializes in repurposing building materials and merging the warm aesthetic of their history with modern functionality. Ballastpointe showcases reclaimed doors and hardware, heart pine, old brick, and stained glass, as well as vintage beadboard and classic construction techniques. For example, the floors are pine boards of varying widths, laid side-to-side and fastened with square-head nails. The effect is striking and reminiscent of floors in country homes from the nineteenth century. 46 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JUNE 2014
Look around the home and you’ll see history and enchantment in every corner. The downstairs bath fixtures were discovered by Doris and Peter on family trips. The cast iron tub was resting in a field in Due West, South Carolina, while the pedestal sink was awaiting its new owners at a flea market in Forsyth, Georgia. “We love finding true gems like these,” says Doris. “It excites the imagination to wonder what these pieces have witnessed and also what new, special potential they

Kelley’s
COURTYARD CAFE
A Fernandina Beach favorite, Kelley’s Courtyard Café features fresh and creative food for the whole family in a charming courtyard setting. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
K
elley’s Courtyard Café is owned by the Gass family, a clan of lifelong Fernandina residents. Executive Chef Michael Gass is in charge of all things culinary. Mike got his start cooking right here in Fernandina before attending culinary school at Johnson and Wales, Charleston. Pat Gass, Michael’s mother, in addition to working as a Fernandina Beach City Commissioner, pitches in as book keeper and office manager. I recently visited Kelley’s with my friend, Sherry, for dinner in their charming courtyard on a warm, lovely evening. Our server, Laura, started us out with a glass of Edna Valley Chardonnay for me, and Fleur du Cap Sauvignon Blanc for Sherry. The California chardonnay, a bright and lively wine, had a pleasant acidy, and the South African sauvignon blanc was fruity and balanced, perfect for our appetizer course of Barbecue Shrimp. Chef Michael is a shrimp expert, a true local who knows the merit of fresh Fernandina shrimp. This dish uses local shrimp, grilled with pepperoncini, and topped with his caramelized onion and applewood bacon barbecue sauce. The shrimp and pepperoncini are threaded on a beautiful skewer and served with the restaurant’s famous cole slaw. There is also a balsamic reduction drizzle, a nice touch. The shrimp and pepperoncini were spicy, but the shrimp flavor shined through, and the cole slaw cooled the heat from the spicy sauce. I love that Chef Michael makes his own barbecue sauce, and the delicious cole slaw is a family recipe. Our salad course was a Mandarin Chopped Salad, a mixture of edamame, mixed lettuce, mandarin oranges, carrots, broccoli, and cashews, tossed in Kelley’s own ginger soy vinaigrette. This salad is out-of-this-world perfect, with a clean taste and a nice mix of crunch. The dressing is sweet and salty, bursting with the flavor of ginger. For our main course, we decided on the nightly Chef’s Special: Crabby Artichoke-Stuffed Flounder. Kelley’s always offers a wonderful special, a surprise, where Chef Michael presents his latest gourmet creation. But they also offer a “Blue Plate Special,” which is a home-style diner-type dish like country fried steak, made from scratch. Sherry and I opted for the flounder, which was served with flash-sautéed vegetables
(carrots, spaghetti squash, and spinach), cheese grits, and tropical salsa. This entrée has a little bit of everything. The fish was tender, and I loved the rich, artichoke flavor. With the entrée, we enjoyed a glass of Bridalwood Pinot Noir, one of my favorite summer red wines. It goes well with both seafood and meat, with dark fruit flavors of raspberries and cherries. Sherry calls pinot noir “the velvet scarf” of wine, and I can see what she means! My favorite dessert from Kelley’s is Granny Mott’s Blueberry Squares, but I decided to try something new, Cecile’s Caramel Pie. I love real caramels, and this dish reminds me of something from childhood. It’s like a soft, gooey, smooth caramel in an Oreo cookie crust, topped with whipped cream and a bit of chocolate syrup. What a lovely meal we enjoyed in a warm and friendly atmosphere! Kelley’s is a true family owned and operated restaurant, and a Fernandina Beach favorite, featuring fresh foods for the whole family, craft beer, and fine wines. They also provide on- and offsite catering. For more information, visit www.kelleyscourtyardcafe.com or call (904) 432-8213.

periods of time, he and his daughter maintained a close and loving relationship. “We used to go to the circus when I was little. We’d watch them unload the animals and set up the tents, and then see the circus,” says Torchia. “We moved around a lot because he was in the service. But travel and history were his passions. We even lived in a Howard Johnson motel in the Washington, D.C. area for three months. My father would come home every day at 3 p.m., and we would tour the city. There was not one monument, park, or museum that we did not see.” The world has changed greatly in 100 years, according to McNutt. “The Victrola used to be a cylinder, before the flat phonograph record was invented. Back in those days, telephones didn’t work very well and not everyone had one,” says McNutt. “The first time I heard a radio was over the phone. I held the phone to my ear to hear it. Now we have cell phones. Everything is so different now.” McNutt is pleased to be living on Amelia Island, close to his daughter and her husband. He is a resident at Savannah Grand. “We have dinner together every Sunday,” says Torchia. “That’s what we’ll be doing this Father’s Day, eating dinner and talking about the old times.” When asked about his most memorable moments in life, McNutt has a quick answer. “Being a father,” he says. “That was always the best thing.”

FIREFLIES
Kayak Amelia offers a variety of great kayak trips, as well as stand-up paddle lessons, bike or Segway tours, and a little twilight magic. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY SHERRY GARBARINI
A
little bit of magic happens every time we go out into nature, and Kayak Amelia’s Firefly Tour is a perfect example of that. For only four weeks of the year each spring, there is a special place where fireflies cover the forest floor on Fort George Island. Pair that with a sunset kayak trip, and it’s a backyard adventure of a lifetime. We all remember those long, lazy summer nights when our parents let us stay out after dark, and the miracle of seeing fireflies light up the night. It all comes back on this tour, one of the best that Kayak Amelia has to offer. The paddle begins at the Ribault Club on Fort George Island, and, if you have a chance to get there early, be sure to check out the visitors center and museum. My friend Sherry and I rented a tandem kayak so we could paddle together, and the friendly folks at Kayak Amelia supplied us with everything we needed for our adventure. There were about 20 people on the trip, of all ages and abilities, folks from all over the country who visit our island paradise. We began at 6 p.m. with a short kayak lesson, and then paddled across the Fort George inlet, where we landed on a patch of shore and got out of our kayaks to explore the beach. This paddle is not difficult, but we felt like we were getting a good workout. The evening was beautiful, and Sherry took lots of photos along the way and at the beach. Our guide, Chris, is gregarious and interesting, filling us in on the wildlife of the area and the tides. As the sun begins to set, we paddle back,
taking a slightly different route, and, just as we come ashore, we witness a beautiful sunset. Chris and his crew then packed up the kayaks, and we all met on the gravel road near the Ribault Club, where it was getting quite dark and the fireflies began twinkling. There is a special time between day and night when darkness falls over the forest like a blanket. There is a stillness and quietness that happens, and I suggest if you go on this tour, you should keep as quiet as you can to watch the magic of the nightfall and the fireflies. Along with our twinkling friends, we heard whippoorwills and other night birds, a symphonic accompaniment to our evening performance. There were thousands of fireflies floating in the air, and if you are very quiet and turn off your phone (to avoid confusing the lighting bugs with the light) they will blink synchronistically in the most remarkable display you have ever seen. “This is the closest we come to magic,” say the folks at Kayak Amelia, and I agree with them. What a beautiful way to end a day, with a sunset paddle and a firefly hike! Kayak Amelia also offers lots of other imaginative tours including a full moon paddle, marsh paddle, stand up paddleboard lessons, yoga, bike or Segway tours, and much more for people of all ages and abilities. For more information or to reserve a tour, call Kayak Amelia at (904) 251-0016 or visit their web site at www.kayakamelia.com.
