ISLANDER Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Sales Manager
”
Known as the “Isle of Eight Flags,” Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island have a long and rich history. From the Native American Timucuans, who first inhabited the island from around 2,000 B.C., to French sailors led by explorer Jean Ribault, the first Europeans to set foot here, who named the island L’Isle de Mai, to the Spanish who defeated them and founded the Santa Maria Mission, to the English, to Americans after the Revolutionary War, Confederates, assorted pirates, and Americans again at end of the Civil War, the island has experienced quite a bit. In the period of explosive growth after the war, Amelia Island was well-positioned to flourish thanks to one of the deepest natural harbors on the East Coast and the arrival of the railroad in Florida, which brought visitors, new residents, and lots of opportunity. This period is often referred to as Fernandina’s Golden Age, and many of the homes, businesses, and churches built then stand today as a reminder of those prosperous years. While the extension of the railroad further south, taking business and tourists with it, brought an end to this era, we continue to enjoy the beauty and charm of the magnificent structures that grace Fernandina Beach’s Historic District. As Dickie Anderson reflects in our cover story this month, when the boom slows down, once-beautiful buildings are often broken up for salvage or taken down with little sentiment. After the historic Keystone Hotel was unceremoniously demolished in 1972, concerned residents swung into action and the Fernandina Beach City Commission appointed the first Historic District Council. In 1973, the downtown Historic District was included in the National Register of Historic Places. Thanks to the efforts of the City Commission and downtown residents, many of the beautiful homes and churches built in the late 1800s to early 1900s have been carefully preserved. The iconic Fairbanks House, one of the treasures of the Historic District, is now a luxurious bed-and-breakfast inn. The Bailey House and the Tabby House are private residences. And St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, built in 1881 and located at the corner of Centre and Eighth streets, is a NeoGothic gem. A special thanks to Dickie for sharing some of the history of Fernandina’s Golden Age. Her book, Great Homes & Churches: Architectural Treasures of Amelia Island, explores these magnificent buildings in more detail. Also this month, we take a look at Micah’s Place, which provides prevention and intervention services to victims of domestic violence in Nassau County; present a profile of Linda Love, a local businesswoman and avid outdoorswoman; feature a local ministry to the homeless offered by Sharing Hope and Reaching People; learn how to spatchcock and grill a tender and delicious chicken; and much more. See you around the island!

THEIR POPULAR RESTAURANT NEEDED A BANK WITH NO WAITING Two Friends Knew Local Banking Would Be the Recipe To The Boat House’s Success
Spurgeon Richardson wanted to open a restaurant on Amelia Island with one condition: Chef Chet Huntley. Longtime friends, and two of Atlanta’s most successful restauranteurs, they planned a family friendly restaurant in Fernandina’s historic downtown that would utilize locally sourced ingredients and would need a local bank which saw their vision. Luckily, they knew the bankers at PrimeSouth, whose quick decisions and flexible solutions were just what they ordered. Chet says their real reward in opening The Boat House is making customers happy. His bankers say that isn’t just a reward, it’s the reason they work at PrimeSouth!

FERNANDINA’S
Golden Age With stunning Victorian homes and majestic churches scattered throughout the Historic District, Fernandina Beach’s architectural treasures remind us of the island’s Golden Age.
BY DICKIE ANDERSON
I
n the late 1800s following after the Civil War, Amelia Island was a bustling center of commerce. Its deepwater port and the emerging development of railroads in Florida created great opportunities for the entrepreneurs attracted to the island. Many homes, businesses, and churches built during those years still stand today to remind us of those glory years. Why does Amelia Island have so many Victorian-era houses and churches in such good shape? The island shares an interesting history with Galveston, Texas and Mystic, Connecticut. Each has homes and buildings preserved in their original shape. Why were these communities frozen in time? There is a logical explanation. If a town or city suffers dramatic economic losses, all progress, growth, and change stop. Typically, towns evolve. Old buildings are torn down, and new ones are built. In the case of Galveston, Mystic, and Fernandina, everything stopped, and nothing changed hands or was altered. Galveston was a thriving port. When the port was moved because of hurricane threats, the town went to sleep. Mystic was a thriving port, where fleets of whaling ships were based. With the arrival of electricity and no need for whale oil to fill lamps, the port became quiet.

The dramatic shift of Amelia Island’s economy was largely due to Henry Flagler’s railroad expanding down the east coast of Florida, taking commerce and tourism away from Fernandina. The once-thriving Egmont Hotel, which welcomed guests from the Northeast, shut down. No use was found for the elegant building, and it was broken up into salvage. The so-called Three Sisters, a row of houses on South 7th Street, were built of salvage from the hotel. With no growth in the economy of Fernandina, there was little movement or change. The elegant homes of North 6th Street and South 7th Street remained unchanged and are there for us to enjoy today—a living museum.
PRESERVING FERNANDINA’S ARCHITECTURAL TREASURES Historic preservation has been a priority for Amelia Island and the town of Fernandina Beach since 1973, when the downtown Historic District was included in the National Register of Historic Places. The original designation included 1,500 acres of land. An additional 970 acres were added in 1987. Four hundred buildings are included in the district. As often happens, the teardown of a historic building created a sense of urgency to act in order to prevent future losses. Many tie the commitment to historic preservation to the loss of The Keystone Hotel. Built in 1912, it was the center of social activity in its heyday. However, it outgrew its usefulness and sat sad and empty on Centre Street. When the hotel was abruptly torn down overnight in 1972, a shocked community recognized the need to take action and protect its historic properties. It is important to understand that recognition by the National Register of Historic Places does not protect the buildings. It functions solely as a listing of historic sites, districts, buildings, and landscapes. It is up to local government to protect buildings or sites

from demolition or alteration. After the loss of the Keystone Hotel, concerned groups formed and the City of Fernandina Beach prioritized the protection of its historic buildings. The Historic District Council (HDC) was formed, comprised of five regular members and two alternate members, all appointed by the Fernandina Beach City Commission. The carefully preserved houses, buildings, and churches built during the so-called Golden Age were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s by the entrepreneurs and leaders in the community. Foremost among the leaders, David Yulee, was president and chief stockholder of the Florida Railroad Company, which ran 156 miles from Fernandina to Cedar Key on the Gulf of Mexico. He was a major employer. Yulee moved the original town of Fernandina from a bluff north of present-day Fernandina Beach, leaving behind “Old Town” and creating Fernandina Beach, or “New Town,” at its current location. He platted the new town to mimic Manhattan in New York City. Fernandina even has a Central Park just east of the historic downtown. Part of his relocation plans included offering prime locations to churches for their new sanctuaries at favorable terms.

Victorian-era buildings are recognizable for their elaborate detailing. Many houses in Amelia Island’s Historic District showcase a wide variety of window styles, fretwork, shaped shingles, brickwork, galleried porches, and a variety of paint colors. The more detail used, the more impressive the house would be considered. The majority of the houses in the Historic District were not designed by architects and are considered vernacular, an architecture style concerned with function and comfort rather than grandeur. So who built these amazing houses? They were the leaders of the community, the movers and shakers

of the day. George Fairbanks was a fruit grower, a historian, a lawyer, an editor of the Florida Mirror (now the Fernandina Beach News-Leader), and senator. Fairbanks hired architect Roberts Sands Schuyler, who designed St. Peter Episcopal Church and other buildings in the Historic District. The Fairbanks House is Italianate in design, one of the many variations popular during the Victorian Era. Details include an unusual oriole window, balustrade porches, dormers, bay windows, and its distinctive tower. The house, considered extravagant in its day, was nicknamed Fairbanks Folly. It is now a popular bed-and-breakfast inn. Considered one of the finest examples of Queen Anne architecture, the Bailey House sits on the corner of Ash and 7th Street. Built in 1885, the house offers examples of typical Victorian-era house detail. It has three-story turreted bays at the two corners of its front facade, and wide-eaved porches on its south and east sides. Fish-scale shingles cover its gables. Effingham W. Bailey was an agent for a Fernandina Beach shipping company and enjoyed a successful career with the railroad, built the trolley that ran from town to the beach and the Keystone Hotel. The Bailey House is a so-called bride’s house. At the time of its building, a gentleman was expected to provide a home for his new bride. George W. Barber of Knoxville, Tennessee designed the Bailey House. It is built of native heart pine and includes six fireplaces and Tiffany-style stained-glass windows. Local boat builders and ships carpenters probably were engaged to perform the exacting tasks of cabinetry, molding, and the carved railings and pillars.
THE TABBY HOUSE One of the more interesting houses in the Historic District is the so-called Tabby House, located at the corner of Ash and 7th Street. Most of the historic homes are named after their original owners,

but in the case of the Tabby House, it is named for its unique construction material – tabby. Built during the Golden Age, the house offers a sharp contrast to the more typical Victorian houses in its neighborhood. It was unusual to use this construction technique at the time it was built. Robert Sands Schuyler, the same architect that designed many other buildings in Fernandina, was the designer. It is the only existing tabby house on the island. The method of construction is simple. A mixture of Portland cement and oyster shells is poured into molds to create the walls of a house. Tabby is dependent on an abundance of oyster shells. Thanks to the Indian tribes that occupied the coast of Florida, many middens of oyster shells were left for later generations to use in the fabrication of tabby houses. The detailed trim on the galleries is typical of the intricate detail that characterized Schuyler’s buildings. Similar detailing can be seen in the Williams House, Fairbanks House, and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The house has had many lives. At one time, it operated as a funeral home; later it was abandoned, suffered a fire, and barely survived. It remains as one of the Historic District’s more unusual and important homes.

Amelia Island has always valued its houses of worship. Throughout the island’s history, churches have been established and organized that reflect the needs and interests of the people. Like most of the buildings in the Historic District, community churches were not designed by architects but were the result of the efforts, available resources, and talents of congregation members. When David Yulee convinced the residents of the original Fernandina, or Old Town as it is known today, to move to its current location, the railroad offered a very low price to “each body of Christians desiring a

place to worship.” Many took advantage of the offer and occupy prime real estate in the Historic District. Located at Centre and Seventh streets, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church was built in 1881 and is considered architect Robert Sands Schuyler’s masterpiece. Originally from New York, Schuyler was deeply religious. He built many churches throughout Florida in the Gothic or Carpenter Gothic style. Architectural detail includes nearly perfect proportions, arched windows, a steeply pitched red roof, buttressed walls, and its distinctive tower with a castellated parapet. The church’s stain glass windows are memorials to people who are part of the church’s rich history. The church is open to the public. A cemetery adjacent to the church is the graveyard of many leaders of the community. A more modest church, Trinity Methodist, sits several blocks away at Ash and Eighth streets. The small, boxy church has many details that reveal the congregation’s commitment to build a beautiful house of worship. The two-story masonry building is noteworthy for its lancet arched windows with belfry and square tower. Beautiful etched stained-glass windows line the walls and glow on a sunny day. In 1996, the church’s congregation had dwindled, and the historic church fell into disrepair. Leaders in the community stepped up and formed Friends of Trinity. In 2016, when Hurricane Mathew damaged the roof of the church, once again the community rallied, and a successful fundraising campaign funded the roof replacement and made other improvements to the historic church. With its lovely Victorian-era homes and historic churches, Fernandina Beach is a historian’s dream. In addition, you’ll find plenty of locally owned shops and restaurants on Centre Street and throughout the Historic District. And don’t miss the Amelia Island Museum of History for its informative exhibits and docent-led tours.

Omni Amelia Island Resort recently unveiled the lineup for its 2022 Sprouting Project dinner series, an epicurean adventure exploring the resort’s onsite Chef’s Garden and Barrel Room with an elevated five-course dinner under the stars—an intimate, Southern-inspired farm-to-table experience. Each dinner is themed by a locally sourced ingredient, which is then used throughout the entire evening from light bites to dessert. The summer lineup includes stone fruit on June 25, corn on July 15, and watermelon on August 13. Sprouting Project dinners continue into the fall, culminating with a special truffle event in December. “The Sprouting Project Dinner Series has always been a passion project for our team. This year we highlight some unique flavors and use them in some truly unexpected ways which will surprise and delight guests,” says Executive Chef Omar Collazo. “We’ve worked so hard over the years to build this sustainable space, and we love sharing it with guests.” Tickets for general admission are $99 per person and include cocktails and light bites at 6 p.m., followed by a five-course dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. Private dinners are also available. or artist Michael Rippey, oil painting has been a lifelong interest. “I always have had oil paints and an easel somewhere around the house, turning out a painting every few years,” he says. “But it wasn’t until I retired from the golf industry in 2013 that I pursued painting full-time.” Michael and his wife, Durenda, a former gallery operator, work well together. “Durenda knows
his inspirations. Growing up in the Midwest, he has always been attracted to barns and landscapes. Living near Lake Michigan as well as on Amelia Island, boats are also a common theme. Michael’s style is considered impressionistic; his clouds and skies are dreamy hues of color and light. Michael’s Michigan studio is located in Holland, a harbor town where the landscape features beaches, sand dunes, and rolling farmland. He shows his work at The Galleria, an innovative combination of cocktail lounge, studio, and gallery space. In Fernandina Beach, his home studio features paintings that can be seen by appointment. His work is also featured at JW Frame Gallery at 19 South 8th Street in Fernandina Beach. Dr. Paul Miller, Dr. Jackie Miller, Dr. Jessica Loumeau, and Dr. Mark Olbina
n 1987, Dr. Mark Olbina opened Amelia Gentle Dentistry. In 2013, he was joined by his daughter, Dr. Jackie Miller. In 2016, Dr. Paul Miller (Jackie’s husband) joined the practice, and two years later, Dr. Jessica Loumeau, a close friend and colleague, joined the team. “I was born and raised here in Fernandina Beach. My parents moved to the island in 1984 as my dad was a Navy dentist at the submarine base in King’s Bay, Georgia” says Dr. Jackie. “I love the great people here and the small-town feel of Amelia Island.” If you’re searching for a family dentist in Fernandina Beach, Amelia Gentle Dentistry is the team you can trust. They offer the latest in dental technology, outstanding patient care, and results that last. Comfort is their number one priority. Whether you need a preventative cleaning or a cosmetic procedure, you’re in excellent hands. “My favorite part of my job is that moment when my patient sees their brand-new smile for the first time. The most satisfying part for me is that I get to serve the community in which I was born and raised,” says Dr. Jackie. “And we have fun here! I love laughing and telling jokes with patients and my office team. I call them my ‘work family.’” When Dr. Jackie isn’t working, she enjoys reading, listening to live music, and spending time with her two young children, Theo and Isla. For more information, call (904) 277-8500 or visit www. ameliagentledentistry.com. Amelia Gentle Dentistry is located at 1699 South 14th Street, Suite #21, in Fernandina Beach.

Offering critical prevention and intervention services, education, and a 24/7 hotline, Micah’s Place provides hope and help for victims of domestic violence in Nassau County. BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTOS COURTESY OF MICAH’S PLACE

ore than 1,000 victims served. Over 5,000 nights of safety provided. Approximately 150 survivors legally represented pro-bono. 1,500 helpline calls and texts answered. Close to 3,000 members of the community trained and educated. That is the most recent 12-month footprint of the services that Micah’s Place—a domestic violence center here on Amelia Island—provides in our community. Micah’s Place is the only certified domestic violence center serving Nassau County, and its mission is to provide prevention and intervention services to victims of domestic violence and provide education within our community to effect change in behavior and attitudes. So, what exactly is domestic violence? The United Nations defines it as “a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner be it physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions.” Because of the scale of domestic violence, services like those of Micah’s Place 37 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
bring rescue, healing, and empowerment to victims in all stages of their healing journey. “At Micah’s Place, we work with each and every client to meet them where they are and offer services specifics to their needs,” explains Cassie Ott Crosby, Outreach & Community Engagement Director. “Everything we do is free, it’s confidential just like an attorney-client privilege, but most of all, it’s supportive; we like to think of our services as the soft hand on victims’ backs to guide them through their journeys. And each journey is unique and helps us to grow and become better at what we do,” she adds. A cornerstone to the work of Micah’s Place is its 24/7 hotline, emergency shelter, legal aid, and community education. The hotline, which now offers voice and text support, provides crisis intervention counseling, safety planning, and supportive services at the point of need. When a victim reaches out, the team is there to help navigate their next steps. continued on next page JUNE 2022

Sometimes the next step is for a victim to find safety in the Micah’s Place shelter, which provides all the basic needs, including meals and personal care items. At other times, clients benefit from added services such as counseling and support groups, financial and legal assistance, and education. “How we help varies with every situation, but at the end of the day, when a victim is reaching out, it’s terrifying, confusing, and Micah’s Place is able to step in and answer questions and offer assistance that the victim often cannot otherwise afford,” says Cassie. To offer these services, Micah’s Place relies on three key pillars: grants and fundraising, the Purple Dove Resale Center, and volunteers. On the fundraising front, Micah’s Place has been awarded a matching grant for $10,000 from The Community Foundation of Northeast Florida to strengthen the organization. Behind high-quality programs is a need for capacity building, the process of increasing a nonprofit’s ability to fulfill its mission. Increased capacity helps strengthen their roots and provide improved technology, strategy, and processes to better serve survivors. Every donation designated to the 2022 Capacity Grant will be matched dollarfor-dollar up to $10,000. To donate, visit: www.micahsplace.org/match. By donating your gently used clothing, household items, and furniture, along with shopping at Micah’s Place Purple Dove Resale Center, you are helping to provide 25 percent of Micah’s Place annual revenue and you are creating a supply chain to stock the homes of survivors who are rebuilding their lives. Purple Dove is located at 474311 State Road 200, and you may also donate items at 2118 Sadler Road, or visit the website at www.micahsplace. org/pickup to request free pick-up. And, by volunteering at the resale centers, assisting with donation processing, or spreading awareness, volunteer hours provide immediate help and leverage future grant dollars. For more information on how you can help, visit their website at micahsplace.org or call (904) 491-6364.

It was love at first sight, and her dreams of flying with Delta never took flight. Instead, she and Nat set off on a new adventure that included snorkeling, scuba diving, and saltwater fishing. Did you know that Linda is an avid outdoorswoman? She started hunting at the age of ten, but she was a city girl and hunting was limited. After she and Nat were married, they bought some land and had acres and acres in which to spend time enjoying nature. Eight years after they married, they started a family, but that didn’t slow Linda down. She was still climbing tree stands eight months into her pregnancy. At three years old, her daughter would go with Linda and sit in the deer stand, taking in the beautiful scenery with her mama. A coloring book and crayons kept her from getting bored. On one of their trips in the woods, Linda and her daughter had a visitor. A little fawn decided to lie down at the base of the tree. When they climbed down, the fawn followed them home. It was free to come and go, but the deer loved to come inside and snuggle up with Linda’s daughter in her beanbag. One day, Linda got a call from her daughter’s teacher, who claimed she was making up stories about her imaginary friend. Linda and Daisy May hopped in the car and showed up for show-and-tell at her daughter’s school. Linda says hunting isn’t about “the hunt” as much as it is about being outside and seeing all the beauty. She says she’s 51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
never felt closer to God than when she’s out in nature. “Do you think I ever shot anything with Daisy May hanging around?” she laughs. “The answer is no.” Linda started a women’s hunting group and was very active in the Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, and Elk Foundation. When their daughter moved to Colorado for college, Linda and Nat followed. Did you know that she and her daughter owned a store in Pagosa Springs called The Hideout? Linda was an interior designer, and the store was full of items she’d use in her work. Did you know that Linda worked with contractors on remodels and new construction to make sure her clients vision stayed true through the whole process? Just listening to some of the homes she’s designed is a story in itself. Linda has a natural gift for it. Whether it’s a huge project or a small one, she knows just what her clients want – sometimes before they do. After eighteen years in Colorado, now a widow, Linda decided it was time for a change. She followed her daughter and granddaughter to Palm Beach and planned to retire. But Palm Beach was a little too “busy” for Linda. She bought a new house that was a blank canvas in Fernandina Beach and, in making it her own, she realized how much she missed doing that for other people. Did you know that instead of retiring, Linda took a course in Staging with Transformations in Jacksonville, got certified, and started a new business? Bling Staging and Redesign, where the motto is “We Bring The Bling,” suits her to a tee. You’d never guess by looking at Linda, a small, blonde lady with her blinged manicure (including sparkling rhinestones that match the shine in her eyes) that she’s killed (and cleaned) a 400-pound elk and a 275-pound bear! But you know by that sparkle in her eyes she has some stories to tell! JUNE 2022

hope sharing
In partnership with First Baptist Church, Sharing Hope and Reaching People assists the homeless in Nassau County by building relationships with those in need. BY JULLIE SIMMONS • PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHARING HOPE AND REACHING PEOPLE
“I
t’s hard to believe it was over four years ago that myself and just a few volunteers gathered in the Salvation Army parking lot with 20 sandwiches, bottles of water, and flip flops to distribute to the homeless in our community,” Robbin Smith, founder of Sharing Hope and Reaching People, shares as her voice cracks with emotion. Robbin, along with her sidekick, Denise Nelson, have hearts of compassion for the homeless in Nassau County. They have spent most of their Saturdays over the past few years building relationships with these citizens, providing hot meals, and earning their trust. “God never wanted us to do life alone, and we have the opportunity to be there and help our neighbors in their different walks of life. As we’ve spent more and more time with these friends, we are breaking down walls between us,” she says. “The less fortunate want trust and connection just like you and I; sometimes they just need an ear or a chance to vent. For me, learning how grateful they are for everything we offer makes it worth it,” adds Denise. 61 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
In partnership with First Baptist Church Fernandina Beach, Robbin, Denise, and a host of volunteers serve meals and groceries to-go every Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. From that first Saturday with 20 sandwiches, the ministry has grown and provided over 7,000 meals, 700 bags of groceries, numerous snack packs, and more in 2021 alone, but that’s not all. “We are providing other services to those in need, including laundry and shower facilities. We have seen folks who were uneasy coming in for meals who now have the courage to use the church locker rooms for a shower, and some have even attended service and worshiped with us,” says Robbin. Sharing Hope and Reaching People is making a mark on our community, and next they have their eyes on Yulee. “With support from Christ Walk Church, Memorial United Methodist Church, 14th Street Church of Christ, Celebration, and The Journey, we are delivering nine routes of food bags to nearly 80 families each month both on Amelia Island and Yulee,” says Robbin. continued on next page JUNE 2022

Moreover, the delivery teams keep the same routes from week-to-week so they get to know the families, check-in with them, and have the chance to meet additional needs. “It’s amazing to see people from diverse backgrounds come together to serve our community,” adds Robbin. While there are so many encouraging stories of the great work of this ministry, Sharing Hope and Reaching People needs folks to partner with them to keep this important work alive. “We invite all to join us to serve the nearly 500 meals we offer each month or help bag food for the 100 families we assist, something you can do alone or as a family. If you feel led to donate, we always need cereal, condiments, spaghetti, pasta sauce, diapers, toilet paper, feminine and laundry supplies, or of course, monetary donations to support the pantry.” Additionally, the team needs delivery drivers and some tech-savvy friends to help with operations, social media, and grant writing. To fill a need or meet a need, simply text or call Robbin at (904) 868-8615, visit their Facebook page at sharinghopeandreachingpeople, or make donations at First Baptist Church Fernandina Beach at 1600 S. 8th Street.

IN THE GARDEN Neverland Agapanthus
perfect planters When starting a vegetable or herb garden at your home, try planter boxes and include Chef’’s Choice Culinary Rosemary, with its spicy flavor and colorful periwinkle flowers. BY BETTY MORRELL
I
can’t believe that at the end of this month we will be starting the second half of 2022, time is just flying by! Usually in June, I write about Roses and the flowers of the month, life advice but after thinking about how time flies, it got me thinking about how we also age too quickly. I have always loved having a vegetable and herb garden. Last year, I incorporated my veggies in pots into the landscape. It worked well, but they were hard to care for. This year, as the ground seems to be getting farther away and my body resists getting up and down, I have made it easier for myself with what I call my “Wee Farm.” My Wee Farm is made up of 6-foot long raised wooden boxes on 30-inch legs. I stained the boxes, then lined the inside with weed block fabric (stapled) and filled them with good garden soil. I had so much fun planting radishes, beets, eggplants, peppers, green beans, cucumbers, and of course, tomatoes. The cukes are planted in a 20-gallon planter and a 4-foot planter, both with a trellis. The tomatoes are in 5-gallon pots

and staked. No bending or stretching required, this endeavor has been quite successful. The herbs, basil, thyme, rosemary, sage, and oregano are thriving in 20-gallon planters. It’s almost time to harvest tomatoes. I am so happy with my “Wee Farm” that I just had to share it with you. Now back to this year’s Veri Peri Panatone-colored flowers for your garden. One of the nearest shades to true Veri Peri is the Neverland Agapanthus. It has lilac buds and variegated green foliage with chartreuse centers. This is an eye-catching, clumping beauty that tolerates heat and humidity well. They thrive in part-sun and grow 20 to 24 inches in height and 18 to 24 inches in width. Use them in borders, as accents,

edging, and mass plantings. They make great cut flowers. Here’s a plant that will appeal to almost every gardener: Chef’’s Choice Culinary Rosemary. Of course, you are thinking of the kitchen and cooking, but the Very Peri periwinkle flowers of this rosemary brings bonus color to this flavor-packed and easy-to-grow herb. This variety was specially selected for its higher oil content and spicy flavor. It has a compact mounding habit and periwinkle flowers that appear each spring. It is great in a container, herb and kitchen garden, or anywhere in your landscape to add a pop of Veri Peri spring color. Chef’s Rosemary will grow in full sun to part-shade, is aromatic, attracts birds and butterflies, is heat-tolerant, edible, and for those near the beach, it is salt-tolerant. Chef’s Rosemary has a spreading habit, growing 18 to 24 inches in height and width, and year-round interest. It’s a must for the garden! If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell33@gmail.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

That’s all I get to do?’” If you get a chance to meet Heather, you’ll know that 13-year-old Sam had a lot to learn when he thought he could relegate Miss Bass to some minor duties! And learn Sam did. reconnected, and Amelia Island is right in the middle of their story. “We first discovered Amelia Island in 2014 after reading about it in Coastal Living Magazine and making a visit to The Florida House Inn. We should have known we’d be back when we left our mark at The Green Turtle,” the duo reminisces, sharing that Heather stood on the handrail to write Heather ‘hearts’ Sam alongside the names of so many others. The couple went on to say, “I do” in the sand at the Omni Amelia Island Resort in 2015. Coming from Maine, the couple knows a great coastal town, and Amelia Island checked all the boxes. “We love the Victorian elements of the northeast U.S. that are here, the grittiness of the mills, and of course, the great restaurants.” But what they love even more is their brandnew home at Lofts on 5th, a 1960s-era three-story brick building that was once part of First Baptist Church and is today nine luxurious modern lofts. “When I first visited the concrete block and brick veneer building, I knew

it was something special,” says Sherri Rinker, the developer of Lofts on 5th. For Sherri, the chance to repurpose this three-story structure was the project of a lifetime. The City of Fernandina Beach liked what they saw and presented Lofts on 5th with two Preservation Awards: the 2022 Keystone Award and the 2022 Adaptative Reuse Award for projects that best represent historic preservation. Sam, a licensed building contractor who specializes in renovation and design himself, followed the development of Lofts on 5th and appreciated the highquality work of the renovation. “We were visiting Amelia more and more and we were thinking about buying. In addition to their gorgeous two-bed, two-bath condominium with spacious living spaces and an extra-large kitchen, the couple has a private 600-square foot rooftop terrace with unprecedented views of historic Fernandina Beach and the Amelia River. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunrise over coffee, and then enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine. Heather and Sam’s third-floor unit boasts impeccable interior design thanks to the talent of none other than Heather. “I am a psychotherapist by trade, but what I really do is create space for my clients. Sometimes its emotional and mental space, and other times it’s physical and lifestyle space 72 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
in the home design work I am able to do with Sam and in my new Marco Island boutique, The Curated Crab,” she says. The intentionality with which Heather approaches life is inspiring, and her design choices echo her passions. For instance, Heather and Sam talked Sherri into giving them some of the church pews to repurpose as wood flooring for the stairs leading to their upstairs garden. From detail to detail, the couple’s new home represents their love for each other, and perhaps nothing more so than the large scale of justice that sits on the kitchen island—a reminder of the balance they bring to each other’s lives, which began many years ago in a classroom in Maine and is alive and well on Amelia Island today. Leddy’s Porch In the historic Florida House Inn, with a large porch and a charming courtyard, Leddy’s Porch offers Southern hospitality and delicious Southern favorites for brunch. BY LOIS CHAPPELL WINKLER • PHOTO BY LILLY SCHEETZ
T
he last time my daughter, Sophia, and I were at the historic Florida House Inn together, we were in a family wedding in the courtyard. As flower girl, she processed around the top walk, down the stairs, past the fountain, and into the trellised corner. Last Sunday morning as adults, we reminisced with brunch on Leddy’s Porch, with orchids hanging like magic over the courtyard and fellow diners streaming in. No longer a passageway to the courtyard or a place to get away for a private conversation, the porch has become a focal point of the dining area. Entering the Florida House Inn from
the front, you pass The Mermaid Bar, while entering through the rear courtyard, you pass the giant mermaid fountain. Mermaids greet you whichever way you enter Leddy’s Porch. The inn was built in 1857 by David Yulee to house workers on his railroad; during the war, it housed soldiers, and then postwar, it was purchased by Major Leddy and his wife. They turned it into a fashionable hotel, where luminaries of the era visited or stayed. The ghost of Major Leddy’s wife might have 74 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
stayed a bit more long-term, it is said, for her lavender scent has been known to waft through the bar on occasion. If only we could ask that tree: In the center of the entire property is an oak whose measurements suggest it began life in 1772, at which time the English flag flew—well, despite objections from the King of Spain, but that’s another story. What tales that oak could tell! Our own brunch tale began with Bloody Marys, Pimento Cheese, and Fried Green Tomatoes. The olive-okra-pickle garnish was its own treat, as was the subtle burn of the pimento cheese and the firm bite of the three tomato cutlets. We could’ve made a meal with these by getting the Grilled Pimento Cheese sandwich or Fried Green Tomato BLT, but we were there to explore. The Fort Clinch Platter, The Hoss, and the Breakfast Bowl were mighty appealing, but we picked Fried Chicken & Waffles and Saltmarsh Shrimp & Grits. House-made jams with the light Belgian waffle got our breakfast started, while the generous serving of delicately fried chicken completed our lunch. The Shrimp & Grits was savory and similarly satisfying. Under the umbrella of Saltmarsh Hospitality Group, Ernie Saltmarsh and his family have restored and revived several beloved Fernandina historical spots, including Beech Street Grill, Down Under, and other grand venues for special events. Fernandina native Chef Matthew Kennedy unites the restaurant concepts as Food & Beverage Director. Our server Chrissy said she enjoyed working at both Beech Street Grill and Leddy’s Porch. With hints of Confederate jasmine in the air, we listened to the train whistling a few blocks away and watched a frog peeking out of a birdhouse a few feet away. Sophia was sure the orchids were real, but I contended that they were just too perfect. She was right, and furthermore, they are the work of Brian Saltmarsh. Luckily for Leddy’s Porch and the rest of us, Brian is moving to the island and bringing his orchid interests with him. That, too, is another story, but look for his blooms to proliferate on Leddy’s Porch at the Florida House Inn. JUNE 2022

re you appalled at the price of groceries these days? We certainly are! But that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop eating the food we love, and that’s when we turn to the humble chicken. As the price of meat and seafood goes up, chicken is still reasonably priced and adaptable for any meal, from a backyard cookout to an elegant dinner party. With Father’s Day right around the corner, we’re making Dad a grilled spatchcock teriyaki chicken for dinner. Spatchcocking is a culinary term for splitting open, or butterflying, poultry for grilling or roasting. In this way, the chicken will cook more evenly, and it will be tender and juicy. Using strong kitchen shears, cut alongside the chicken’s backbone from one end of the bird to the other. Then, cut along the other side of the backbone and remove it completely. Open the cavity and score the breastbone from one end to the other, without cutting into the meat and skin. Your chicken should lay flat at this point.
You may season your chicken however you wish before you grill it, but we like to make a teriyaki sauce and let the chicken hang out in the marinade, refrigerated, for about 4 hours before cooking it. When you’re ready to grill, remove the chicken from the marinade and pour the leftover sauce into a small pan. For a 5 to 6-pound chicken, grill on one side for about 25 minutes, then turn and grill on the other side until a thermometer reads 160 degrees. Remove the chicken from the grill, cover it with foil, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. While the chicken is resting, bring the leftover teriyaki marinade to a simmer, and cook until it is reduced by about half. Cut the chicken into serving pieces and drizzle the sauce over all. We like to serve this teriyaki chicken with broccoli ramen salad and roasted potatoes. Leftovers are great cold or at room temperature. But, knowing my Dad, there won’t be any leftovers this Father’s Day!

Preparation Combine all marinade ingredients in a pitcher. Place prepared chicken in a large Ziploc bag, then pour marinade over all and seal. Refrigerate for 4 hours, then grill as above. When chicken is nearly done, place orange slices on the grill and cook until tender. Makes 6 to 8 servings. BROCCOLI RAMEN SALAD For salad 2 small crowns broccoli 1/2 small red cabbage, thinly sliced 3 scallions, thinly sliced 1 package ramen noodles 1 handful raw pumpkin seeds For salad dressing 1/2 cup neutral oil 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 2 Tbsp. soy sauce 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, more or less to taste Preparation Make the dressing by combining the oil, vinegar, soy sauce, and brown sugar to taste. Remove the florets from the broccoli, making sure they are cut into very small pieces. Peel the broccoli stalks and slice very thinly into matchsticks. Using your hands, crush the ramen while still in the package. (Discard the spice packet.) In a large bowl, place broccoli, red cabbage, ramen, and scallions. Pour the dressing over all and mix well. Refrigerate for at least 1 to 2 hours before serving. Makes about 8 servings.
