”
Each year, the July Amelia Islander Magazine brings the annual “Fun in the Summer Sun” guide, in which we try to highlight some of the varied and exciting activities available on and around the island during our gorgeous summer season. Putting together this issue always makes it tough for us to stay in our beach chairs because we are reminded once again about all the fun things to do on and around Amelia Island, and we’re not ready to let our summer visitors enjoy all the fun! We won’t always admit it, but for much of the year, we can spend too much time keeping up with work, kids’ activities, and so forth, that we sometimes forget we live between an unspoiled, miles-long Atlantic Ocean beach and the beautiful Amelia River. That’s why when school ends, we always commit to get out of the house in the summer months as much as we can. When summer arrives, we happily abandon our usual routine and start kayaking, surfing, fishing, cruising, sailing, and whatever else we can think of to bring Amelia Island’s extraordinary opportunities for fun into the ordinary activities of our lives. We’re ready to jump on a river cruise, take sail out of the harbor, hop into a kayak – that’s our summer homework! We like getting out on the water, but if you prefer keeping your feet planted firmly on the ground, there’s plenty of other fun things to do, like biking off the south end of the island or grabbing your golf clubs or tennis racquet. There are very good reasons why vacationers from all over the Southeast visit our island paradise in the summer, so get out and discover why—whether you live here or you’re here for a muchneeded vacation. Of course, we don’t want you to encourage you to get so busy chasing after summer activities that you forget to enjoy a quiet walk on the beach or find a good book to read. And while you’re relaxing, we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of this month’s Islander, which includes an article on the eye-catching butterfly sculpture on the west wall of the Lindy’s Jewelry on Centre Street, a sculpture created by an internationally-known artist who brought to life owner Lindy Kavanaugh’s vision, and whose butterflies offer us some important insight as we continue to grow as a community; a feature on Foar from Home and the Cross the Line Foundation, a group of four men preparing to row across the Atlantic to raise money for veterans with PTSD; a “Backyard Adventure” on a magnificent sunset cruise with Amelia River Cruises; and much more.

COMMUNITY YOGA +WELLNESS EXPANDS INTO ONLINE CLASSES When COVID-19 hands you lemons, you make lemonade! Just ask Lisa Waas, director of Community Yoga + Wellness. “On March 15, we opted for health and closed our physical studio to in-person classes. On the March 16, we opened our first online live class,” says Lisa. “Since then, we offer 15 classes a week using an online platform where the students and teachers interact and the teacher can give instructions and help to each individual student.” Little did Lisa realize how COVID-19 would transform her business model, enabling Community Yoga + Wellness a reach further than she ever dreamed. “All of a sudden, students who had come to our classes on their vacations, or ‘seasonal locals’ who winter in our community and love Community Yoga, could now attend their favorite class!” Lisa, along with so many other Amelia Island businesses, are realizing that our new normal has provided a reach beyond what they imagined. “We even have new students whom we have never met who found our interactive classes online!” Lisa and her team are excited about the future and plan to continue their popular online classes and will continue to expand their staff into a global roster! To learn more and participate, visit www.cyoga-amelia.com.
Dr. Scot Ackerman of the Ackerman Cancer Center on Amelia Island received one of the highest honors in his field when he became a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. Recognized as the gold standard in the area of radiology practice, science, and radiological care, a Fellowship with the American College of Radiology is the organization’s highest honor. Less than ten percent of the College’s membership is eligible for this recognition. To qualify, physicians and physicists must have distinguished themselves as leaders in the field of Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Medical Physics, or Nuclear Medical Physics, demonstrating its core values of integrity, quality, and innovation. Dr. Ackerman has more than 30 years of experience caring Dr. Scot Ackerman for the residents of Northeast Florida. With an eye toward innovation and a will to offer the highest standard in care, Ackerman Cancer Center became the first private, physician-owned proton therapy center in the world in 2015. The Center’s mission is to be the first resource where patients can turn when diagnosed with any type of cancer. Ackerman Cancer Center provides the most advanced radiation oncology treatments available, in a compassionate and respectful environment, using a highly trained staff of oncologists and medical professionals to provide excellent care locally. STORY & SONG BOOKSTORE BISTRO KICKS OFF NEW “HAPPY PLACE” MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM Story & Song Neighborhood Bookstore Bistro prides itself as being just as its name suggests—a neighborhood bookstore! In this spirit, COVID-19 and social distancing have made it tough for the whole neighborhood to commune at the store as so many enjoy doing. “Our customers are grateful that we remain cautious about health and safety, but that doesn’t mean that we are neglecting them,” owner Mark Kaufman assures. “We’ve adapted by transforming to be the best personal shoppers we can be! We spend as much time as they need with customers who call and ship to their loved ones.” Story & Song is thrilled to resume the ‘live’ events for which they are famous. Next up is Valerie Brandt and her “singing bowls” leading a meditation and yoga session on July 16. The team will also introduce a new offering, “Readers Meet Writers,” kicking off with an online author chat with Kristin Harmel on July 21. Best of all, Story & Song can’t wait to share with the community their new “Happy Place” membership program, affording special perks for customers who join the group, which is built around the theme, “Amelia Island is My Happy Place.” For more information, visit, storyandsongbookstore.com.

era Sue Sergent has been busy! But thanks to help from friends, family, and all the wonderful vendors at Antiques and More Treasures, her hard work is paying off. Antiques and More has moved from its original location to Amelia Island! The new location on South 8th Street will feature all your favorite vendors as well as many new ones. With 9,200 square feet, Antiques and More Treasures has more than tripled in size. But don’t worry, the gallery still has the same down-to-earth charm and relaxed feel that makes Antiques and More a favorite place to shop for locals and visitors alike. Sue, an interior decorator by trade, opened the gallery eight years ago. Always on the lookout for interesting finds, she has been drawn to items that make a difference in a room throughout her whole life. “When I was a child and we would go visit someone, my mother would tell my siblings to mind their manners, and then she would tell me not to rearrange anything,” laughs Sue. With so many booths and vendors, you are sure to find what you’re looking for, along with a few interesting surprises. Come prepared to embark on a treasure
hunt because hidden gems are to be found everywhere, including repurposed furniture and fun recycled items, eclectic items and quirky one-of-a-kind handmade gifts, and, of course, lots of beautiful antiques and collectibles. “If I had to pick my favorite part about having the store, it would be all the people that I get to meet here. I love our regular customers, and I love meeting new ones.” The only downside? “I want to take everything I see in the store home with me,” she says with a grin. Several local artists display their artwork at Antiques and More as well, so you add the gallery on your list of places to visit to support our local talent. Speaking of local talent, Antiques and More Treasures also has a room set aside for hands-on classes. The comfortable space is available to rent by the hour for anyone who would like to teach a class, giving other creative souls on the island a place to learn new crafts and skills. Be sure to add Antiques and More Treasures to your “to do” list when you’re out and about shopping on Amelia Island. The gallery is located at 329 South 8th Street. For more information, call (904) 226-0351.

onnie Southwick, a North Carolina native, moved to Amelia Island twenty four years ago. “There are so many great things about the island.” says Bonnie. “The community and local support are wonderful, and I have to say I have the cutest customers! The children make this store such a happy and joyful place to be.” Monkey Barrel of Amelia, a children’s clothing and toy store, offers a wide selection of children’s clothing, beach wear, and accessories. It’s the ideal place to update your child’s summer wardrobe, shop for a special occasion outfit, or find the perfect ensemble for a beach photoshoot. With brands like The Beaufort Bonnet Company, Bailey Boys, Kissy Kissy, The Proper Peony, Johnnie-O, Prodoh, and Hatley, it is a favorite place to shop for locals and visitors alike. “If you’re looking for a fun and educational gift for a child’s birthday or special celebration, we have a wide selection of unique gifts.” Bonnie adds. Monkey Barrel offers toy and game brands like PlayMonster, Fat Brain Toys, Playmobil, Melissa & Doug, Madame Alexander Dolls, WOW Toys, and more, as well as complimentary gift wrap with all purchases, perfect for those last-minute shopping trips. Monkey Barrel of Amelia is located on the south end near the Harris Teeter Supermarket at The Shops at Amelia Market, 4802 First Coast Highway. For more information, visit their Facebook and Instagram pages (@monkeybarrelofamelia), their website at www.monkeybarrelamelia.com, email them at mbofamelia@comcast.net, or call (904) 310-9463. 28 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
om Miller is working diligently to bring the well-regarded golf course at Amelia River Golf Club back up to “par.” The large greens, rolling fairways, and challenging pin positions make Amelia River one of the most prestigious and user friendly courses in all of North Florida. “Lots of exciting new things are in store for the course and the clubhouse” Miller says. Tom and his partners are committed to bringing the condition of the course back to where it was when it opened 20 years ago. Tom also took over the Putt-Putt Amelia Island, located in Fernandina Beach’s Main Beach Park three years ago. “Having played tournament Putt-Putt back in the 1970’s as a kid, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to own the oldest operating Putt-Putt in America.” He has the same passion for the 36-hole Putt-Putt that he has for the Par 72 Amelia River Golf Club. “The first thing I did at Putt-Putt was replace the old lighting with new amber, turtle-friendly lights and replaced all the putting surfaces,” says Miller, “It’s been a part of Fernandina’s history since 1959, and it still has the same family-friendly values.” With hotdogs, snacks, soft drinks, Kona Ice and Hershey Ice Cream available at the concession stand, it’s the perfect place to stop after a fun day on the beach. Putt-Putt Amelia Island, located at 6 N. Fletcher Avenue in Main Beach Park, is available for birthday parties, outings, and special events. Amelia River Golf Club is located on Amelia’s south end at 4477 Buccaneer Trail. For more information, visit www.ameliarivergolf.com.

With a butterfly garden and small park next store, the butterfly sculpture on the west wall of Lindy’s Jewelry building on Centre Street is attracting a lot of attention. BY JULIE SOMMINS • PHOTO BY CHRISTY LELAIT
T
here’s something intriguing about butterflies—their grace, their spectrum of colors, their momentary presence. Maya Angelou sums it up well: “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” The butterfly progresses from caterpillar to chrysalis to triumphant butterfly, and our small hometown of Fernandina Beach is a little like that, transforming through different stages of growth. It has lived under eight different flags, survived fires and renowned pirates, and it is now taking on COVID-19 and celebrating its diversity. Our town is proud of our spectrum of colors and strengthened by the struggles that lead to greater understanding. Celebrating our community emerging through stages of growth like the butterfly seems a fitting way to enjoy the new butterfly sculpture and garden downtown on the west wall of Lindy’s Jewelry. 35 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Mindful of the building’s history and appeal, Lindy always had an eye on the empty lot next door. “Our building is unique. At the back of the building is an exposed brick wall with a ghost sign, an old hand-painted advertisement from the 1950’s or 60’s, which was already a popular photo backdrop for locals and visitors. I imagined doing some planting, and then once I had the idea for the butterfly wall, it began to take shape.” Lindy got to know PunkMeTender, a French artist now living in the U.S., through a friend and began following his work. “I saw what he was doing in Los Angeles with butterfly sculptures, and how his art was becoming signature to different locations. I mentioned that next time he visited Amelia Island, he should create a butterfly wall at my store,” Lindy explains. “Ironically, I was in Paris when he one day called and said he was headed to Amelia Island and asked if I was still interested.” Lindy was definitely onboard, and continued on next page JULY 2020

they began to collaborate to realize her vision. PunkMeTender’s signature motif is the butterfly, and powerful themes are captured in his art. His entire body of work, he has said, is based on transformation, in the same way that the butterfly transforms itself from the chrysalis. The theme of freedom also runs through his work, represented in the 3-D butterflies freeing themselves from a flat canvas, and he sees the power of beauty as a unifying force in society to bring people together. Fernandina Beach Main Street, 501(c)(3), whose goal is to strengthen our community through preservationbased economic vitality, partnered with Fernandina Beach High School’s Key Club and Liberty Landscaping Supply to build a butterfly garden in the empty lot next door. “The 3-D butterfly mural on our building became the perfect finishing touch, and we love how the monochromatic colors allowed for a contemporary space while preserving the historic characteristics of our downtown location,” says Lindy. The whole community from toddlers to elderly are enjoying the art and garden. Even local educators are finding value in the one-year-old garden. “Working at a school in the historic district is fantastic for walking field trips,” says St. Michael Academy teacher Donna Runyeon. “We often walk down Centre Street teaching the children about the post office and courthouse. This past year, we’ve really enjoyed the addition of the butterfly mural at Lindy’s and the garden next door. The plants attract butterflies, and it’s been a wonderful learning tool for our life cycle project in the spring. It also shows the students how open spaces can benefit and beautify our community. The kids love looking for butterflies and taking pictures in front of the mural!” As we take pride in our downtown and where we’ve traveled to get to where we are today, be sure to stop by the butterfly sculpture and garden on Centre Street near the Welcome Center. And don’t forget your camera!

FOAR FROM HOME To raise money and awareness for veterans suffering from PTSD and at risk for suicide, four veterans from Fernandina Beach decide to row across the Atlantic Ocean. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY SHERRY CARTER
F
oar From Home is an ocean-row team composed of four veterans from Fernandina Beach, each rower having served in a different branch of the military: Billy Cimino, Army; Hupp Huppmann, Navy; Cameron Hansen, Air Force; and Paul Lore, Marines. In December 2021, these four ordinary guys will take part in an extraordinary event: rowing across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua in order to raise awareness and donations for PTSD and veteran suicides. It is estimated that 22 veterans die by suicide each day and countless others are now victims of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge begins in early December 2021, with 30 to 40 row teams participating from around the world. The race brings together teams from across the globe, who gather in the race village of San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands. The atmosphere is electric as people help each other prepare for the challenge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean, all with the same objective—to cross an ocean in nothing but a rowing boat. 41 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
However, the four veterans can’t make this journey on their own. They are asking their hometown of Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Nassau County, and anyone else committed to the cause to team up with Foar From Home and come along with them on this extraordinary journey to effect change for veterans in need. “We have a land support team of over 55 volunteers now, people who are helping us achieve our goal,” says Huppmann. “They include fitness trainers, rowing coaches, nutritionists, a boat maintenance crew, and the like. We’re hoping to amass a group of corporate sponsors and individual donors, too, and support from our community. It takes an island to cross an ocean!” “We can’t stress enough how important this project is to us,” says Lore. “When leaving the United States Military Service, our veterans, both men and women, face many challenges and issues while transitioning back into civilian life. Unfortunately, many veterans struggle with identity issues, financial problems, conitnued on next page. JULY 2020

housing issues, cognitive issues, and issues from PTSD.” “Foar From Home wants to take a bite out of the high suicide rate by running a significant awareness and donation campaign that will raise $500,000 to make a significant contribution for what veterans need now,” says Hansen. “We want to change the life of a veteran today, not tomorrow.” “Foar From Home is part of a bigger non-profit organization for veterans called the Cross the Line Foundation,” says Cimino. “Cross the Line raises money for other organizations that help veterans, like K9s For Warriors and Fire Watch, Northeast Florida’s fight to end veteran suicide. We also hold other fundraising events, like a paddle from St. Marys to Fernandina Beach, a silent auction at The Green Turtle, and a special luncheon at the American Legion. The Cross the Line Foundation is only successful because of the amazing community support we receive. We would not be able to contribute to veterans’ causes without your help.” The four veterans hope to make the 3,000-mile journey within 50 days or so; the record for the race is 29 days, and most crews complete the race in 50 to 90 days. These four rowers will row all day and all night, two hours on, two hours off, in rotation so that each rower can get the rest they need. They have much to do to prepare for the journey, including fitness training, sea survival training, and ocean first-aid classes. Foar From Home’s challenge wouldn’t be possible without support from their families, especially their wives, Lulu Huppmann, Starla Hansen, Katie Cimino, and Ruth Maestra. “We call them ‘The Steady Oars,’” laughs Lore. “They’re the steadfast ladies keeping us men on course.” For more information, to make a donation, or to become a corporate sponsor, visit www.foarfromhome.com. Heart Throb™ Hydrangea
heavenly hydrangeas With the hot and humid season upon us, garden in the early morning and add color to your landscape with a wide variety of hydrangeas or a Japanese Red Maple. BY BETTY MORRELL
W
e have reached July and the Hazy, Hot, and Humid season, which will be with us for the next several months. It is the time of year when “armchair” gardeners admire their lovely gardens created while planning in the winter months. However, new plants arrive daily at your local garden center, so you can add more color if you need it. Remember: this is the time of year when planting becomes more difficult, so for your own comfort and that of the new to-be-planted flowers and shrubs, plant in early morning or early evening so that the plants can sustain themselves through the heat of the day. Watering is essential; it is the magic ingredient for luxurious lawns, blooming flowers, and productive vegetable gardens. Taking a stroll back in time, I remember a couple of homes in Long Point at Amelia Island Plantation that had large gardens filled with Hydrangeas of all colors, sizes, and types in their front landscape. One couldn’t help admiring these beautiful shrubs with their magnificent blooms of blue, pink, and white, with a few multi-colored.
TIP OF T HE M O N T H Hydrangeas can be made (or kept) blue by applying aluminum sulfate to the soil, or pink by liming the soil or applying super phosphate. Apply well ahead of the bloom to be effective.
Many new colors are now available, and the spectacular blooms will continue through summer and fall. I have become a fan of the Hydrangea. Many gardeners overlook Hydrangeas because they don’t realize how handsome and reliable the new varieties are and that they fit into any garden as a specimen shrub, hedge, or potted for the patio. The new ones can be grown in sun, but delight in a little dappled shade in the hottest part of the day. Do enjoy one or two of these beauties in your landscape. Some varieties of Japanese Red Maples have been difficult to grow on Amelia Island because when it freezes, so do the red maples, and they die back or die completely. They also do not tolerate

intense heat. However, I have come across a beautiful, hardy variety for our area: Japanese Red Maple Tamukeyana, one of the oldest Japanese Maples, with records on it dating back to 1710. This tree has outstanding foliage throughout the seasons. When the new foliage unfolds, it is a deep crimson red, and soon turns to a dark purple-red until late summer. In the fall, the leaves turn a bright scarlet. This tree does well in both heat and humidity. A strong cascading form catches the eye as it grows 5 to 7 feet in the landscape in ten years. Planted in a container, this lacey-leafed tree grows 4 to 6 feet. If left to do its own thing, the branches of this beautiful tree will cascade to the ground, forming a beautiful mound of color and adding delicacy to your landscape. Use it as a specimen tree or plant it in a large pot for a beautiful addition to your porch or patio. You will enjoy this tree for many years to come. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

henever you come to Amelia Island, you want to stay here forever. Just ask Thea and Bob Gude. “We started coming down for work about five years ago from our home in Kansas City. On one trip, we stayed at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, and it was all over from there,” they laugh. “I rented a bike, and within five minutes, I was house shopping!” says Thea. “I absolutely loved the community, the canopies of oaks, the crash of the waves in the background – all of it. I’d never seen such a place.” The couple continued to visit for two more years before their property search intensified. “By happenstance, we met local realtor Sara Stancin.” Sara is under the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chaplin Williams Realty umbrella. “We instantly connected via our collective ties with University JULY 2020

of Missouri, and she started to show us around. We’d look at homes, but we never found just the right one.” But that all changed when they saw a rather unremarkable house on Beachwood Road in Amelia Island Planation. “It was far from the prettiest we’d toured, but it was on a really great lot and it had good bones!” the couple confirms. “As we signed the papers, we knew we needed help on our project.” A quick online search brought Thea and Bob to Tiffany Hinton, designer and founder of Lola Interiors and co-owner of Cape House. “Everything she does is our style,” says Thea. More importantly, they connected personally with Tiffany. “We appreciated how she portrayed her company and her spiritual philosophy. We were simply drawn to her.” Both the Gudes and Tiffany were satisfied with their partnership. “We were thrilled to work with Thea and Bob throughout the process of renovation, floorplan review, material selections and furnishing,” shares Tiffany. “We were able to grasp the client’s design style quickly because of Thea’s love of blue and white mixed with antiques, which just happens to be our personal favorite as well.” 52 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Above: Throughout the home, Tiffany worked with the Gudes to incorporate beloved artwork and special pieces they own while keeping with the coastal theme of the redesign. Left: Along with coastal hues, Tiffany incorporated interesting patterns throughout the home, with the tile floor in the laundry space being a great example.
“Tiffany was more than professional—she was kind,” says Thea. “I wanted to be part of the process, and she made my ideas count and incorporated them with her eye for detail, including accessorizing with my new and recent finds and some beloved artwork.” Not knowing anyone locally, Tiffany and her team were instrumental in pairing the family with Cotner & Associates for their architectural design and BKB Construction for the makeover. “This project was more than a simple update,” notes Tiffany. “We added a second level to the main house and a studio over the garage to transform the space into a fun destination for the couple’s four grown children and grandchildren.” Once the renovation was complete, Thea might just admit that she likes her home on Amelia Island a little more than her primary residence. “We added a screen porch for outdoor living, and this with the open floorplan, just make this home spacious and welcoming for my entire family.” 54 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

“The blue-and-white color scheme throughout, while giving personality to each room, is a highlight,” says Tiffany. “However, the mudroom/powder bath, with its fun floor tile pattern, turtle wallpaper, and vintage wall sink, might just be our favorite!” The recent coronavirus shutdown slowed the Gudes entertaining in their newly renovated home just a bit, but the family is looking forward to their summer stays. here is nothing like a long day toiling in the yard to work up a thirst and an appetite. That’s how I came to be bellied up at the bar at The Crab Trap recently. Thankfully, the summer swelter had yet to set in and after cleaning up, I was able to make it downtown on my bicycle without breaking a sweat. The dining room was already quite full, so without missing a beat, I bounced up the stairs, only to find a couple of large groups already seated, eating and having a good time. I snuck around the corner and found an empty seat at the bar. The
afternoon was drawing to a close, but the sun wasn’t ready to set quite yet, and the river was still sparkling through the window. The menu at The Crab Trap is a throw-back to old Fernandina. Southern hospitality and coastal charm combine at The Crab Trap to give a taste of the island to locals and visitors from all over the world. Since 1979, the Germano family has grown the restaurant into the institution it has become. Over the years, when family and friends came in from out-of-town, 58 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
they wanted to eat seafood and they wanted to do it downtown, and what better spot to do it than this comfortable place, which can accommodate a party of two or a party of 20. My meal started off with an order of Buffalo Shrimp. Fresh local shrimp are lightly breaded and tossed in a zippy Buffalostyle sauce, then served with their house-made coleslaw. In addition to the starter, I enjoyed a Florida Cracker Belgian-Style White Ale from Cigar City Brewing Company out of Tampa. It’s crisp flavor and citrus finish was perfect for the shrimp. The creamy coleslaw was the perfect pairing to temper the spice of the sauce. Late as usual, my friend James met up with me in time for dinner. He ordered a beer and got comfortable. For our entrees, he kept it simple, ordering a burger with fries, all the way. I went a different direction with a local classic, the Crabber’s Delight. I ordered the dish blackened, and it arrived overflowing with oysters, fish, shrimp, and devilled crab, with a baked potato that I ate dutifully. The burger was juicy and cooked to perfection, and the seafood platter was the taste of home I had hoped for. To my surprise, James ordered a piece of the Salted Caramel Cake for dessert. If you have a sweet tooth, this cake will definitely take care of it. I wasn’t in the mood for sweets, but I stole a bite. The cake was moist and rich, and drizzled with a delicious salted caramel sauce. I opted instead for another Florida Cracker to end the evening. There is so much more to get into at The Crab Trap, from daily happy hour specials to trivia nights and a dynamite lunch menu. They make it easy to enjoy it all. Open seven days a week for dinner and lunch from Wednesday through Sunday, The Crab Trap Restaurant is located at 31 North 2nd Street in downtown Fernandina Beach. JULY 2020

COURTESY OF AMELIA RIVER CRUISES
sunset
ON THE RIVER STORY AND PHOTOS BY JULIE SIMMONS
O
ne of my favorite things to do on Amelia Island is a sunset n ccruise! This summer evening, we were lucky to have 7:30 p p.m. reservations with Amelia River Cruises, which is l d at the bottom of Centre Street at the Fernandina Harbor located Marina. As we walked up the dock, we were greeted by owner Captain Kevin McCarthy and his first mate, Brett McCarthy. My daughter, Raleigh (12) and son, Carter (8), and I found a seat near the stern of the boat. We could smell the salt in the air and knew we were up for a fun hour on the family-friendly sunset cruise to Cumberland Sound and back. A family-owned business for 20 years, Amelia River Cruises offers several fun trips, including an extensive Cumberland Island Tour, a Beach Creek Tour, Adult BYOB Cruise, Family Friendly Sunset Cruise, and Shrimping Eco Tour. The adult BYOB sunset cruise is an amazing time for a couples evening out, a birthday celebration, or even a wedding party, which we enjoyed for my sister’s wedding. This was my first family sunset cruise, and it was extraordinary; instead of live music, renowned narrator Captain Kevin shares his endless accounts of local history and nature, mixed in with colorful tales about local people and his personal connections. In one hour, I learned more unique details of our past and present than I could have gathered in several books. For example, did you know that for the last 50 years, fishermen have harvested Florida Golden Crabs off our coast and delivered them to Japan still swimming? Did you know that 500 trucks a day come to our island with timber for
the mills? Or did you know that when one of the mills was struggling years ago, their business was saved by Amazon and its high demand for cardboard shipping boxes! I learned these fun facts in the first five minutes of our cruise. And how were the kids enjoying the cruise? My son was wide-eyed looking at the crab boat, the large machinery at the mill, and the garbage barge, which included a boat that was beached due to a hole in its bow. Captain Kevin knew just the right “little boy” details to capture his curiosity! Meanwhile, my daughter was thrilled taking photos of dolphins dancing around the boat and the gorgeous colors of the sunset against the sky with the beaches as a background. I won’t spoil all the details, but you’ll have fun learning about Old Towne, Fort Clinch, the lighthouse, our tides and waters, and Cumberland Island, all while seeing our majestic coast from the water, local shrimp boats headed back to the harbor, a variety of wildlife, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of the majestic wild horses on Cumberland. We were having so much fun that we almost forgot we were there to see the sunset! As the day was drawing to an end, we watched a big ball of fire descend behind the bluffs. The crowd grew silent as Captain Kevin idled the boat for us to soak in the beauty of nature all around us. There was something very special in these minutes—a child’s hand in each of mine, freezing this moment in our memories—all thanks to Amelia River Cruises. Visit ameliarivercruises.com to learn more about creating your own memories on our local waters.
