in the present.

Good health is an important part of our general sense of well-being and our enjoyment of life, yet how we approach our health changes over time. When we are younger, we think about maximizing our health: how fit am I; how fit can I be; what diet will maximize my energy? As we get older, we find ourselves reflecting on our health in a different way. Little aches and pains, problems with our teeth or gums, or pain in our joints begin to enter our conversations. We begin to ask ourselves: how can I maintain my energy? What can I take to protect myself from illness and disease? How can I preserve my strength and mobility? Soon we realize that a big part of maintaining good health as we get older involves establishing good habits in the present. The Covid pandemic has dominated our thoughts on health for the last year, and it has reminded us that lasting good health depends on day-to-day attention to detail. Healthy choices mean healthy living. As we age, good decisions can considerably lessen our risk of being overwhelmed with health issues later in life. Our health also depends on good treatment and advice we receive at the local level. Having a vibrant medical community is crucial, and we are very fortunate in Nassau County to have excellent medical professionals close to home, led by the outstanding Baptist Medical Center Nassau, as well as in Jacksonville. Many innovative therapies, treatments, and surgeries are now being offered here on Amelia Island, providing more options in treatment and, of course, greater convenience. Each year, we use the October Amelia Islander Magazine for a “Health & Wellness” special issue to highlight important issues in maintaining good health. In this issue, we have asked some of Amelia Island’s local professionals to share their expertise with us. From answering questions about dental surgery and communication strategies when hearing challenges arise to taking a holistic approach to living well, we hope these articles will keep you informed on medical topics that are important to all of us. Many thanks to the generous doctors and health professionals who took the time to write these pieces and share a bit of their expertise with us. Also in this issue, we take a look at The Golf Club of Amelia Island, which offers golf, tennis, beaches, lots of amenities, and fun activities like this month’s Fall Festival; we catch up with the popular Newcomers Club of Amelia Island, which has both women’s and men’s clubs that offer a dizzying array of engaging activities; share an excerpt from Dickie Anderson’s updated book, Great Homes & Churches: Architectural Treasures of Amelia Island; enjoy a fun “Backyard Adventure” at Amelia Island Escape Rooms; and much more.

or both individuals with hearing loss and those with normal hearing, certain environments and situations can int interfere with our hearing ability, leading to a breakdown in com communication. The dreaded repetition of “what” or “huh” can frustrate both the person trying to listen and the person try to speak. trying It’s easy to both overestimate “normal” hearing ability and the ability of hearing aids. We all know it would be silly to try to rea a book from five feet away, and yet most couples try to talk read to each other from unrealistic distances, like from one room to an another. For appropriate communication, we really want our pa partner no further than six to eight feet away, as voices start to sou more and more muffled as that distance increases. sound Distance is not the only factor to consider. All individuals hav trouble with background noise. Background noises can have be interesting sounds such as a television, other people talking in the background, or music. They may also be less interesting sou sounds, like running water, the hum of a refrigerator, or a

fan. We should either turn off as many background noises as possible prior to communicating or change our environment to one with less background noise. Some rooms are just not set up for ease of communication. Many rooms are full of hard services that permit sounds to bounce off of each other and distort spoken words. To help around the house, consider adding soft objects such as rugs, window curtains, canvas art, or cloth-covered furniture to rooms where you typically talk to others. When at restaurants, consider eating outdoors, eating at non-peak hours, or eating at restaurants with carpet or booths. In any situation, there are two things we can easily do to help make communication easier. The first is to get our

communication partner’s attention prior to speaking. Simply saying their name and waiting for an affirmative response can make sure they are both paying attention and listening. The second is to make sure that they can see our mouths while we are talking. Many people lip-read automatically, and by looking at lips we can better tell which consonant sounds are being said, which is crucial when surrounded by background noises. If we are too far away to read our partner’s lips, we are too far away to have a conversation. Alexander Barnard is a Doctor of Audiology at Amelia Audiology. Much akin to this saying, residents at Osprey Village senior living encourage their neighbors and friends to jump in and try something new! Located in the Amelia Island Plantation, Osprey Village is a luxury senior living community that is committed to helping their members live longer, healthier, happier lives. A 640 square foot indoor heated saltwater pool and building opened in April this year, giving residents year-round access to swimming and aquatic activities. In addition to the community’s current wellness center and fitness studio, the pool provides another venue for residents to participate in low-impact cardiovascularbased workouts that are proven to improve overall physical health for al adults. “We are extremely excited for the pool opening because having it on-site further enhances our members’ health, wellbeing, and ultimately, increases the longevity of their lives,” says Matthew Barger, Executive Director at Osprey Village. And jump on in everyone did. “We’re currently offering two instructor-led classes in our pool each day,” says the community’s Wellness Director Nura Hussein. “They are some of the favorite activities that we offer each day.” Hussein and her team instruct 14 different topics per week in close to 40 classes that take place in both the fitness studio and pool. “Our team offers everything from yoga to www.AmeliaIslander.com

ental health is important to overall health, and increasingg d evidence shows the link between dental health and systemic health. The question is, why do people hesitate to seekk routine dental care? Many patients struggle with dental phobiaa and anxiety, or simply don’t like having dental care done. Forr p patients with these concerns, sedation is a great option to help relax and receive dental treatment in a way that is comfortablee for them. n There are varying types of sedation. A common misconception is that sedation is an on-and-off button. Instead,, sedation is more like a continuum with different levels. Manyy variables affect the level of sedation and onset, such as thee administration route, drug used, and patient factors, includingg age. Levels of sedation are more appropriately termed minimal,, moderate, deep, and general. General anesthesia, as an example,, is what is done commonly in operating rooms in hospitals forr more invasive surgeries. Deep sedation is commonly used forr outpatient procedures. Dental procedures and some outpatientt procedures use what is commonly termed moderate sedation. Unlike general anesthesia, moderate sedation is a level off sedation that does not require intubation, because it does nott inhibit an individual’s ability to breathe for themselves. Moderatee d sedation can be achieved through oral tablets or administered through an IV. Moderate sedation, when delivered through an IV, is easily monitored because a drug administered through www.AmeliaIslander.com

an IV has a fairly immediate response. This makes it easier for a physician to determine if more drugs will be necessary or not and proceed accordingly. Another advantage of IV administration is the ability to reverse sedation that may be unnecessary or unwanted, thus increasing its safety. Moderate sedation still requires the use of local anesthesia for pain management throughout procedures. Another great advantage of moderate sedation is the likelihood that patients will have little to no recollection of the dental procedure completed. Moderate sedation is effective and safe for most patients, but a thorough medical review is required before administration.

Various factors can affect the way a patient should be sedated or if they are even a good candidate for sedation. A patient’s reaction to the sedative drugs used for moderate sedation can be impacted by current medications, age, weight, and many other factors. For individuals with dental anxiety or in need of invasive dental procedures, moderate sedation is a great option to consider. hat is Direct Primary Care and how does it work? k? nt Essentially, Direct Primary Care is an arrangement rs directly between patients and primary care medical providers e. (doctors or nurse practitioners) that does not involve insurance. The primary care provider charges a reoccurring fee, which thee patient pays each month (or annually) directly to that primaryy at care provider, regardless of whether they see the provider that t, month. The patient can pay using a credit card, bank account, or health savings account. The primary care provider does not participate with anyy ce health insurance plans and does not submit bills to insurance companies. The patient can then communicate with thee rprimary care provider as often as needed and there are no pervisit fees (or drastically reduced fees in some cases). The primaryy care provider utilizes resources, when available, for imagingg h studies or lab tests, at greatly reduced prices when paying cash ). (sometimes less than the co-pay required with their insurance). d Patients may still have insurance, and it can be used d for prescriptions, imaging studies, lab tests, specialists, and ve hospitalizations. The most frequent complaints patients have with traditional primary care are: they have to wait a longg time to get an appointment; they are not able to speak directlyy n with the medical provider; they do not feel cared about as an individual; and/or they feel rushed at their appointment. Direct Primary Care transforms primary healthcare byy s, promoting health and wellness, managing chronic conditions, www.AmeliaIslander.com

SLEEP IS NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE BROKE… BY STEVE ADAMS

T

©ANDREA DE MARTIN

here was a famous quote from a few years ago by a celebrity pop singer which said, “Sleep is for people who are broke. I don’t need sleep.” For many years, most “peak performing” individuals shared this notion. The less sleep, the more time to be productive, make things happen, and ensure all my dreams come true. However, over the last five to ten years, people have begun to understand optimal health practices, like getting a good night’s sleep, to improve their performance rather than burning the candle at both ends. This is a good thing! But when you’ve eluded sleep for so long, it can be hard for your brain and body to know what to do when it’s time to hit the sheets. Here are a few simple ideas for improving your sleep:

DEVELOP A CONSISTENT SLEEP/WAKE CYCLE Start by going to bed within the same hour each night. Once you have bedtime dialed in, start applying the same principle to when you wake up in the morning, even on weekends. Make sure to allow for at least 8 hours in bed. doesn’t have to mean 8 full hours of sleep, but give yourself enough time in bed to get at least 6.5 hours of actual sleep. When you go to sleep at around the same time and wake up around the same time, every single day, your body develops a circadian rhythm.

DON’T EAT FOR 3 HOURS BEFORE BEDTIME When you eat too close to bedtime, your body’s focus is on digestion rather than restoration. During the night, the body and brain work at the cellular level to clean the cells, restore broken-down muscles, and flush out toxins in the brain. When you eat right before bed, everything gets pushed back. You begin your deep sleep stage 2 hours after you’re supposed to, causing you to disrupt your needed sleep cycle. Finish that last meal or snack 3 hours before bed and you give

your body time to complete digestion, ensuring a restful and restorative night of sleep.

GET A TRACKING DEVICE If you’re not measuring, you’re guessing. Maybe you feel great every morning when you wake up. Great! But you don’t know whether that’s because you had quality sleep or if you just have a natural surge of cortisol around 6 am. Either one could be true, but without a sleep measuring device, you simply don’t know. A few devices I would recommend are an Oura Ring, a Fitbit Sense, or an Apple Watch. Remember: at the end of the day, your body is your number one asset. Steve Adams is the owner of Nassau Health Foods. f you’ve watched television from October to December in the past few years, you have likely seen famous football legends telling you about all the free stuff you can get when you are on Medicare. While the information in these commercials is true, the messaging can be very confusing and difficult to understand what is applicable to you. To start, everyone gets Medicare Part A at age 65, but it is only “premium-free” if you have paid into the program through your taxes for a minimum of ten years. Medicare Part B always has a premium. For most people, this is $148.50. If you had a high annual income (as determined by Medicare) in the past two years, your premium for Part B could go as high as $504.90. We call this an Income Related Medicare Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). Part D premiums also increase if you are subject to an IRMAA. Electing not to receive Part B or D when you are first eligible will also cost you more in premiums later due to Late Enrollment Penalties. Parts A and B differ in out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Part A generally covers most bills associated with a hospital stay. Deductibles do apply: Part A beneficiaries must pay $1,484 for the first sixty days of hospitalization. Part B covers outpatient doctor visits and medically necessary procedures, for which you pay a $203 deductible first. Part B then covers eighty percent. Medicare has no out-of-pocket maximum limits, which means that you never stop paying the twenty percent coinsurance. What about the infamous Medicare Part D Coverage Gap (donut hole) that opens when Initial Coverage ends? For 2022, you reach the coverage gap when your total drug cost equals $5,582.50 for drugs covered by your plan. We were all told that the “donut hole” would go away in 2020, but that’s a little misleading since you will still pay some portion of the cost of your drugs while in the Coverage Gap. www.AmeliaIslander.com

The good news about Medicare is that having it opens up great options for you. Many of these options are plans that help pay a portion of your Medicare premiums and include benefits like Dental, Vision, and Fitness club memberships for no cost. Despite the gaps, Medicare shines in a time when health insurance premiums are at unrealistic levels. Through a thorough review with an insurance expert of your current and future health needs, you can discover the plan necessary to conserve your hard-earned funds. Work with a local independent insurance agent that will educate you on Medicare; review all of your options to find the benefits that are important to you; and most importantly, limit your total exposure with maximum out-of-pocket protection. *All figures in this article represent the 2021 calendar plan year. Medicare produces the new year changes sometime in the fourth quarter.

DIAGNOSING COMMON VEIN PROBLEMS BY GABOR KOVACS, M.D.

V

enous disease affects approximately sixty percent of adults over the age of 50. Many factors contribute to the development of venous disease, including hereditary factors and lifestyle factors such as obesity or excessive standing or sitting. Lack of physical activity can also be a factor, usually more for women than men. Sometimes pregnancy can cause venous disease due to pressure from the enlarged uterus causing dilation of the peripheral veins. Unlike arteries, veins don’t have muscles in the walls to help with pumping the blood. Veins depend on muscle movement in the lower extremities to transport blood back to the heart. Veins have valves that prevent the blood from flowing in the wrong direction, but when veins get diseased or dilated, these valves close down, allowing blood to flow down to the legs. This results in venous insufficiency, which leads to venous hypertension that causes veins to bulge and develop into what we call varicose veins. While varicose veins are not a life-threatening condition, they do cause symptoms such as swelling, heaviness, pain, sensation of burning, and sometimes contribute to what we call restless leg syndrome. Long-term venous insufficiency can also cause trophic dermatitis around the ankles and calves. In chronic conditions, it contributes to the formation of venous stasis ulcers in the legs. Diagnosis of venous insufficiency is usually made by ultrasound examination. Treatment is multifaceted. Compression hose are recommended to aid the veins in transporting blood to the

heart and keeping veins d decompressed decompressed. Lifestyle changes such as exercise, weight loss, avoiding prolonged standing, and a healthy diet are also recommended. If symptoms persist, the next step is medical intervention, which consists of laser or radio frequency ablation of the saphenous veins. Sometimes a micro phlebectomy is necessary, which consists of physically removing the veins. All of these are usually office procedures done with local anesthesia. Other venous conditions include spider veins, which are tiny superficial veins in the skin, or thrombophlebitis, an inflammation of the veins manifested by redness and pain along the path of the vein. The most dangerous venous condition is deep venous thrombosis, in which a blood clot develops in the deep venous system. This usually results from prolonged inactivity or dehydration, or a number of medical conditions that might create a predisposition to it. The risk is the clot could potentially break off and travel up into the patient’s heart or lungs, which can in some cases be lethal. If you have any of these conditions, it is usually a good idea to consult your physician or a vein specialist. Gabor Kovacs MD, FACS is a Board Certified General and Vascular Surgeon with Vein Care Center of Amelia Island. To schedule an appointment, call (904) 572-3074 or email at vccofamelia@gmail.com.

KEEP NASSAU BEAUTIFUL SPONSORS FREE HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION In their continued quest to reinforce the importance of a clean, green, beautiful environment, Keep Nassau Beautiful and Nassau County Solid Waste Management will hold a free household hazardous waste collection for Nassau County residents on Saturday, October 9 from 8:00 a.m. to noon. “This twice annual event helps Nassau County residents properly dispose of waste that when disposed of otherwise may lead to contamination of the environment,” explains Executive Director Lynda Bell Keep Nassau Beautiful. This is a great opportunity to roll up your sleeves and dig those batteries out of the waste basket, grab that empty hairspray bottle, or those power tools and appliances you are ready to toss and dispose of them properly. And when you’re loading up the waste, there are a couple of other things to remember to bring. One is proof of Nassau County residency. Secondly, you’re invited to contribute to the food drive being held in parallel for Barnabas Food Pantry. Non-perishable food items are appreciated and will directly support the needs of Nassau County residents. EMPTY BOWLS LUNCHEON BENEFITING BARNABAS RETURNS NOVEMBER 12 November is just around the corner, which means Empty Bowls, the annual Barnabas fundraising luncheon, will be here soon. Empty Bowls is a symbolic reminder of the many “bowls” in our community that need to be filled for people who struggle with hunger or food insecurity. The need for this event is as great as ever, as Barnabas has served more than 14,000 individuals this year with heathy food totaling more than 697,500 pounds. To keep up this important mission, Barnabas needs our support, and to keep attendees safe, the event is “mobile” again! In its eighth year, the November 12 fundraiser is a drive-through experience. Guests will follow a route and enjoy entertainment, a delicious meal of soup from the event’s presenting sponsor, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and a unique hand-painted bowl to take home. Barnabas Center thanks it’s legacy sponsor, Baptist Medical Center Nassau, and its generous champions. Proceeds help Barnabas achieve its ongoing mission to improve the stability, health, and well-being of individuals and families in need. Empty Bowls will be held near the municipal airport, and attendees will choose reservations between either 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. or 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.barnabasnassau.org.

LOCAL AUTHOR R.W. HERMAN WINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION Amelia Island’s own R.W. Herman was recently awarded a gold medal from the annual 2021 Florida Authors and Publishers Association President’s Book Awards for his book, The Unopened Letter. Hosted by the Florida Authors and Publishers Association, this prestigious national award is open to books published between 2019 and 2021. The judges for this national competition are librarians, educators, and publishing professionals. “We are proud to announce this year’s winners who truly embody the excellence this award was created to celebrate. Their works are representative of creative storytelling, bold concepts, and innovative ideas, which make the President’s Book Awards so well respected.” says FAPA’s President, Renee Garrison. The Unopened Letter is a coming-of-age story set in the Vietnam Era, when tensions registered in the “red” zone for 27 million young men who were fair game to be drafted and sent to Southeast Asia to fight in a hugely controversial war. Readers will feel the joy, humor, and heartbreak of the times, told through a teenager’s experience as he grows into a man. The Unopened Letter is published by Giro di Mondo Publishing and can be purchased at Story & Song Bookstore Bistro or online at various websites. BOSTON PHOTOGRAPHY

overs of art and antiques have to go no further than South 8th Street in Fernandina Beach to find treasures old and new at Antiques and More Treasures, which is celebrating its tenth year in business. “We can’t believe this is our tenth year!” exclaims owner Vera Sue Sergent. “I couldn’t have accomplished opening the new shop without the help of my daughter, Tammie.” Vera Sue attributes their success to their incredible group of talented vendors, shop keepers, and consigners for their loyalty to the business. “We appreciate each and every one of our vendors and consigners,” says Vera Sue. “Because of their efforts, we are excited to announce that we are now able to open up ‘More Treasures’ consignment space near the breezeway at the store.” Since their move from Yulee to 329 South 8th Street near the historic district, business has never been better. Its convenient location, at twice the size of their previous store, along with a large parking area and courtyard, have allowed Vera Sue to expand her inventory to include patio furniture and

outdoor accessories. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or buying gifts for others, you’ll always find something special at Antiques and More Treasures, including vintage and antique home décor, furniture, jewelry, bath products, and many unique one-of-a-kind gifts. “The support we have received from our customers has been incredible,” says Vera Sue. “All of us here are truly grateful for that continued loyalty, the many kind words, the laughs we share, and friendships we have created over all these years.” To keep their customers healthy, staff members clean and sanitize the shop meticulously. They also change and add new products weekly for their repeat customers, as well as to draw interest from their new customers. Vera Sue and her associates wish to thank their customers and vendors for making Antiques and More Treasures one of the Eighth Street District’s many successful businesses. “We look forward to seeing you today, tomorrow, and always!” says Vera Sue. Classic Carpets and Interiors

lassic Carpets & Interiors is a family-owned and operated business. Buddy, Gayle, and their son, Eric Adams, moved to the island from Jacksonville in 1990 when they purchased the store on South Eighth Steet. They’ve seen lots of changes over the thirty-one years they’ve been in business. “I worked at a couple of other places before I started here,” says Eric, “but I got tired of the corporate world. Plus, I don’t have to leave the island when I go to the office.” He smiles, then adds that one of the best parts of the job is taking care of new customers who eventually become friends. “Fernandina is such a small town. I’m always running into someone at Publix, football games, or the baseball field,” says Eric. When he isn’t at the store, he stays busy with his family. “We’ve got two kids in college, and two at home. I help coach football and flag football, and we take Roxie, our one-year-old Goldendoodle Covid puppy, to the beach as much as we can. We also like to get out to hear live music and frequent all the great restaurants on the island.” Classic Carpets and Interiors has a great reputation, having received the News-Leader’s “Best of the Best” award every year for the last seventeen years. They are a member of the Abbey Carpet and Floor group and offer a wide range of products from carpets, rugs, hardwood, laminate, tile, and many more. For more information, call the store at (904) 261-0242 or stop by the showroom at 802 South 8th Street. If you’re lucky, Roxie might be on mascot duty.

I love seeing people succeed and watching them achieve their goals in life and in business. It’s why I find my career so rewarding,” says Wesley. “It’s been a great experience with two amazing teams. I consider Nassau County home when I talk to family, friends, and business contacts.” Born in New London, Connecticut, Wesley has spent most of his life in Kingsland, Georgia. “My parents and I moved down in November 1990. I’ve always loved coming to Fernandina for the beautiful beach, great restaurants, and entertainment. Amelia Island is a vibrant community filled with people who make it worth visiting over and over again. You understand why people want to call it home. You’re welcomed here.” When Wesley isn’t busy helping people meet their financial goals, he loves spending time with family. He and his wife, Jessica, have two children. Emma is four years old and Ryane is 9 months. “And Lily, an eleven-year-old Bulldog and Bull Mastiff mix. She’s a big sweetheart and great with kids. he Golf Club of Amelia Island is a place to enjoy all that makes Amelia Island special, with golf, tennis, a private beach club, a number of excellent dining options, and an active social calendar. Surrounded by ancient oaks and overlooking an award-winning golf course, it’s also one of the most beautiful and elegant venues for weddings in the area. Located adjacent to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, members and guests can take advantage of all the resort property has to offer, and more. “The Clubhouse Dining Room offers a tempting choice of our members’ favorite dishes,” says Sheridan Regan, Director of Catering Sales. “Members love our weekly dinners and Tuesday Happy Hours. And the Legends Lounge, open every day, offers cocktail service and a welcoming place to relax after golf or tennis. Membership includes discounts at the exquisite restaurants of our neighbor, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, as well.” During the Covid-19 pandemic, interest in everything outdoors soared, including golf and tennis. The course at The Golf Club of Amelia Island, designed by PGA-Tour veterans Mark McCumber and Gene Littler, is rich in natural wonders and pure golfing pleasure, enticing veteran golfers and new 37 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

F

or new arrivals, and not-so-new arrivals who are eager to make new connections, Amelia Island is fortunate to have two very active Newcomers Clubs, one for women and another more recent club for men. The original club, the Newcomers Club of Amelia Island, began as an offshoot of the Welcome Wagon, when a few ladies from that group were asked to welcome new residents moving to the area. What started as ten ladies meeting for lunch in 1984 has grown into a 650-plus member organization connecting the women of Nassau County. The organization is overseen by a nine-member board that coordinates more than 150 member volunteers and 53 committees, which organize themesponsored activities, community service events, and provide behind-the-scenes technology support to support the club’s internal operations. The Newcomers Club’s monthly luncheons remain an ongoing and popular gathering. Nonmembers are invited to attend. Club activities range from fitness offerings, book clubs, travel groups, and games to dining excursions, boating, and more. Monthly “Mix and Mingle” cocktail parties and “Dinner for Eight” events welcome spouses and guests. Sandee Navarolli participates in a Newcomers Club walking group. “I not only explored many places on the island by foot that I may never have found on my own, but I made many new friends on the Fitness Walks,” says Sandee. “Walking and chatting is a great way to get to know people.” The club holds informational meetings for prospective members on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Fernandina Beach Library. This is where connections are made, with continued on next page

women meeting women and sharing their experiences as they acclimate to their new homes. Many are also navigating another transition in their lives: retirement. “I was hesitant moving into retirement until I found Amelia Island and Newcomers,” says Becky Bausch, a member since 2020. “As a single person, knowing only one person on the island, I was ‘starting over’ and looking for a new friend base, and Newcomers provided that.” Each month, the club supports a Charity of the Month, helping to raise awareness through volunteer services and online donations. The club also presents two large community service events each year: the Purple Elephant Tag Sale in October and the Give a Heart Luncheon in February. Now in its twenty-fifth year, the Men’s Newcomers Club was formed in 1996 by Harry Heyl, Bill Gorski, and Buck Weaver. The Men’s Newcomers Club has a smaller membership and offers luncheon meetings at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club on the third Thursday of the month from September through May. After a short meeting, a variety of speakers offer programs. Like the women’s Newcomers Club, its mission is to offer camaraderie and a variety of activities to its membership. Men’s Newcomers Club activities include Amateur Radio, Antiques,

Bicycling, Bridge, Community Service Projects, Finance/Investing, Fishing, Golf, and Walks in the Park. Groups have visited the Kings Bay Submarine Base and attended special events like Jacksonville Symphony concerts and sporting events. A signature event for the men’s group is their annual Spring Fling. Traditionally held at Walker’s Landing, it was canceled the last two years because of Covid. It is currently scheduled for April 2022. Described as a “glamorous event,” the evening features buffet appetizers, a three-course dinner, and a dance band. The two clubs have made a huge difference in the lives of those new to the community, allowing many to make new friends quickly and find others with similar interests. Both clubs depend on the evolution of their memberships, in which newcomers become longtime members and help coordinate the activities. Whether a newcomer or an “oldcomer,” the two clubs offer many ways to connect within their memberships and their community. Annual dues for the women’s Newcomers of Amelia Island are $40, while dues for the Men’s Newcomers Club are $15. Individual activities and events may involve fees. he two-story house is rich with the details that make it a great example of the Queen Anne style. Its features include a gable-on-hip roof, elaborate detail, bay windows, and a large verandah. The Chadwick House was constructed in 1881 of local heart of yellow pine, the preferred building material of the time. The front door still has its original stained glass. The Chadwick family can be traced to Falmouth, Massachusetts, where they were involved in the whaling industry. Three members of the family moved south in the early 1700’s to South Carolina, and they continued to make their living on the sea there. After the Civil War, members of the family, including Stephan Chadwick, moved to the St. Mary’s, Georgia area. During the Golden Age of Fernandina, the rivers along the coast were the highways of commerce. Extensive shipping records appeared in local newspapers. One can imagine the colorful image of a bustling port, where a wide variety of products were loaded and unloaded. In December of 1879,

the Florida Mirror reported 900 bales of cotton, 419 boxes of pencil wood, 294 cedar logs, 298 barrels of rosin, 634 boxes of oranges, and 38 barrels of syrup were all loaded onto ships and sent to New York. Crates of turkeys, ducks, and chickens were regularly seen on the docks. In addition, baskets of oysters and shrimp were abundant. Captain Chadwick was a successful owner of a fleet of tugboats, and he also operated a livery. The tugboat business thrived, as did the family. Their landholdings included the 3,500acre White Oak Plantation, which was located in Nassau County and eventually purchased by the Gilman Paper Company. Chadwick’s son, Louis, followed in the family’s footsteps, and he was a leading citizen and entrepreneur in Fernandina. He married Julia Brady, who inherited Lucy Carnegie’s Brewster “Victorian” carriage. Now owned by one of the carriage operators in the Historic District, the Victoria carriage still traverses the picturesque streets of Fernandina’s Historic District, offering tours and transporting an occasional wedding party.

IN THE GARDEN Lobster Claw Heliconia

terrific tropicals At the annual Florida Growers Show, new plants, trees, and bulbs were on display, including tropicals that are hardy for our area, like the beautiful Lobster Claw Heliconia. BY BETTY MORRELL

W

e are now officially in the beginning of the gardening season in Florida. October is a fun time to garden as the weather is more cooperative, and the annual Florida Growers Association show has come up with beautiful plants, trees, sod, and bulbs. Everywhere I looked I saw all shades of green, from miniatures to tall trees, and lots of colorful perennials and annuals. One shrub I used to love to plant for privacy, as a specimen, or in clumps was the Awabuki Viburnum. I found a new variety, a very popular landscape shrub here in Florida. It is the Sandankwa Viburnum (Viburnum suspensum). This one is a beauty and basically maintenance-free. Sandankwa is a native of Okinawa and other Japanese islands. It is somewhat drought-tolerant, and it also tolerates heat, humidity, salt, and wind. Large, oval green leaves cover the branches of this shrub, and an added attraction is its very fragrant rose-pink tinted white flowers, which bloom in spring and winter and are followed by red berries that darken with age.

TIP O OF F T HE M O N T H Now is the time to check out the local nursery for plants with beautiful colors that will stand out every fall. Choose your Mums in bud, they last longer.

Plant it in part sun/shade. If left untrimmed, this shrub can grow 6 to 12 feet in height and 6 to 15 feet in width. Pruning is recommended for shaping in spring and summer to limit fast growing shoots. This one is a great addition to any garden because its dense habit makes it a great hedge for screening. I absolutely lost myself in a Tropics display at the show. There wasn’t anything I didn’t want. Unfortunately, not many are hardy for our area. I did find a few Lobster Claw Heliconias that will survive here. The first one is Heliconia schiedeana. This one is cold hardy to 10 degrees. This happy Heliconia stalk, with bold large leaves, grows to 6 feet and is topped from summer through fall with upright, bright red, lobster-like inflorescences, with bright yellow flowers at the axils.

57 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

OCTOBER 2021

Next was a charming little gem named Dwarf Jamaican. This amazing Heliconia only grows 1 to 3 feet in height, so is suitable for planting beneath taller tropicals. This dwarf stands straight with 4 to 5 bright red bracts outlined in dark green edges. Plant this tight-clumping beauty in part-shade to all shade. You might want to plant it under Yellow Dancer, a pure yellow beauty, which stands upright 5 to 14 feet tall and blooms April to November. It does well in full sun to part-shade and provides great cut flowers, which last for weeks. Another tropical I was not familiar with is a beautiful Cordyline called Bolero tricolor. It is a perfect gem, medium in height with leaves that are wavy and wider than many Cordylines. The stunning foliage is green with rose red margins. It can tolerate more sun than other Cordylines. It has sporadic clusters of tiny purple, star-like flowers on tall spikes and is striking in mass plantings, borders, or containers. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell33@gmail.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

hen Barbara and Greg Bostwick decided to redecorate their Sea Watch condominium, they turned to Benjie McEntyre of Julia Hall Interiors to help them make old new again. Like so many homeowners on the beach, the Bostwicks wanted everything to be easy wear and easy care. The Bostwicks have long loved Amelia Island. Growing up, Greg vacationed on the island with his parents. The couple has been vacationing on the island since they were newlyweds 40 years ago. Through the years, they rented in many different island communities and found Summer Beach their favorite. They purchased their Sea Watch condominium in 1999. As Greg’s retirement approached, the couple decided to make some changes. Barbara describes the look of the condominium through the years as a coordinated combination of yellow and blue. The couple was ready for a change and an update. For the structural and finish work, they chose William Rushing Construction. The basic floor plan was fine-tuned. Bill Mooney of Mooney’s Custom Woodworks coordinated the remodel of the kitchen, taking a small space and making it both elegant and efficient. Special touches include English pewter hardware and cabinetry with chamfered detailing. The structural changes in the entry opened it up dramatically. A large chandelier of handblown glass makes a dramatic statement. Major changes on the second floor flipped the shower

and toilet of the guest and master bathrooms to make more effective layouts. McIntyre worked closely with William Rushing Construction on the total remodel. The main level is an open floor plan with plenty of room for dining, conversation, and the game nights the family enjoys. The walls are a light blue that changes with the time of day, but never looks pastel. The floors throughout are engineered French Oak. One striking detail is the unusual ceiling. “The whitewashed pecky cypress ceiling detail was definitely one of those ‘trust me’ moments with Barbara, but it really sets the space apart and gives such textural interest to what otherwise would have been a huge expanse of sheetrock,” shares McEntryre. Colors are soft and serene with an unusual punch of color in the corner dining area from a navy blue lacquered raffia sideboard. OCTOBER 2021

In addition to artwork collected through the years, new pieces created by local artists were added. A striking set of artwork hangs in the upstairs master bath over a stand-alone bathtub. Decorator became artist. McEntyre duplicated artwork he admired. He combined floating sand dollars on a background of hand-painted wallpaper that complemented the soft colors of the bathroom. The bedrooms in the condominium are designed to accommodate friends and family. A front bedroom includes bunk beds and can sleep guests of all ages, especially grandchildren. McEntyre and a good friend of the Bostwicks, Donna Cash, who has a design business in Atlanta, coordinated the bedding, bed skirts, pillows, and window treatments. The master bedroom was detailed with custom Schumacher fabric and Matouk linens.

Covid presented challenges, but through technology, decisions were made via video and phone. The Bostwicks trusted their team on Amelia Island. “I like a favorite slogan, ‘Teamwork makes the Dream Work,’ and that is exactly what has happened for us,” shares Barbara shared. “They included me in their team to create our family dream home—one that is a beautiful, soothing, and easy-care retreat for our whole family!” When not on Amelia Island, the Bostwicks live at Lake Lanier, Georgia. The couple has three sons, who work with their father as telecommunication contractors in the Atlanta area. The close family visits Amelia often. Father and sons are avid fishermen, both fresh water and saltwater, and appreciate their oceanside address. The Bostwicks are committed volunteers. Barbara served as past president of North Gwinnett Kiwanis Club, as well as past president of Northeast Georgia Medical Center Auxiliary. The Bostwicks look forward to years of welcoming friends and families to their newly redecorated condominium by the sea. 66 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

EATING SCENE

Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro With a welcoming atmosphere and innovative, classic cuisine, Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro in downtown Fernandina Beach has set the standard for over 20 years. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY SHERRY CARTER

L

ast Friday night, I finally found the time to sit down and enjoy an evening at Joe’s Bistro with longtime friend, Brett Blalock. The past few times I’d been into Joe’s, I was swinging through on my way to some mini-adventure and I would pop my head in the kitchen door to say hello to Chef Ricky Pigg, grab a little grub, and skedaddle. Tonight would be different. Since retiring from the Army, Major (R) Brett Blalock has been keeping himself busy working with Westrock in town and helping a legion of brothers and sisters to stay on the right path online and in person. You may have seen him around town pounding the pavement in laughably short shorts and a fifty-pound rucksack. He’s out there most days, exorcising his own demons or helping a friend get to know their own. If you see him, toot the horn to say

hello. We were getting together to raise a little Cain and enjoy some fine food. We did both with great aplomb, with my sincere apologies to anyone sitting nearby since neither of us know how to use our inside voices. 68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

We were seated in Joe’s open and well-appointed dining room at a table by the window. Brett took a seat where he could see all the exits, and I took one where I could see all the food coming out of the kitchen. (We all have our priorities.) Chef Ricky came out and greeted us with a bottle of Cab Franc in hand. It was the perfect wine for the occasion. A limited run edition, in hand-painted bottles, a unique wine for an equally unique evening. We had to maneuver through the menu a little, since the only weakness in the Major’s armor is his shellfish allergy. We shared the Tuna Martini and a Bistro Salad to get things going. Brett ate his tuna with a fork; I got to enjoy mine with the crispy fried wontons that come on the side. This is the perfect starter for someone who loves tuna, but doesn’t eat a lot of raw fish. The tuna fillet is seared and tossed with fresh tropical fruit and avocados, a true delight. The Bistro Salad was simple and refreshing. I love the subtlety of the tarragon vinaigrette. For our entrees, we engaged the menu by land and sea. Brett chose the Short Rib, Chef’s favorite, and I chose the Triple Tail special created by Sous Chef Adam Fortenberry, another local fellow who is making his way in the culinary world. The fish was bronzed and finished with a Tuscan cream sauce loaded with sundried tomatoes, spinach, and capers. Brett’s Short Rib was braised to perfection and served over an updated corn succotash that expanded his appreciation for the classics. The Major is a solid chef in his own right and gave the meal a huge thumbs up. We decided to forgo dessert for a few minutes at the Green Turtle before our curfew was up and our families called us home. Go see Ricky and Mari and the gang at Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro, they are open Wednesday to Sunday from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. Call for reservations.

BACKYARD ADVENTURE

lizabeth Eleanor Creighton disappeared on May 13, 1988. After months of searching, she was never found. Devasted by her niece’s loss, Verdie Creighton left Elizabeth’s room exactly as it was the day of her disappearance, then sealed it shut. Now it was up to me, my mom, my mother-in-law, and good friend Ms. Bea to solve the mystery – with just 60 minutes to do so! Amelia Island Escape Rooms is a locally owned, family-run business whose goal is to offer memorable, immersive experiences to visitors while contributing to the local community. Three of the four in our party had never experienced an escape room, and the welcoming staff sensed the nerves and warmly greeted us, explaining that we’d work as a team on a scavenger-hunt like event. To get started, we were invited to walk through the colorful hallways and past the other “escape rooms,” including The Library of Secrets, Dread, The Creighton House Attic, and Greybeard’s Treasure, until we arrived at the back where the entrance to our room, “Unlock the 80’s,” was located. Sage, our gamemaster, pressed play on a quick “safety video,” which was hilarious, reminding us to keep our fingers out of light sockets and to avoid doing anything stupid. We also were reassured that while we are challenged to “escape,” if we were ever feeling claustrophobic or had an emergency, we could just open the door and walk right out. With that, we were off to unlock Elizabeth’s secret! The countdown started as we dug through old VHS tapes, jewelry boxes, and looked under rugs trying to solve the mystery. If Sage sensed that we were hunting up the wrong tree or getting frustrated, he’d give us a tiny hint on the television monitor that was tracking our time. It was just enough detail to keep us going and having fun without divulging any of the mystery. We laughed when we got stuck, cheered when we would uncover a clue, and definitely questioned our intelligence a couple of times as we traversed the brilliantly designed adventure. When our hour was up, owner and designer Cari Cahill greeted us with a smile. “Dan and I discovered escape rooms in 2016 and enjoyed it so much we decided we wanted to bring this experience to our community.” Cari, Dan, and their 84 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

With a background in theater, they have big imaginations and have learned a lot about building props and designing sets that has proved invaluable in this business. “We are ecstatic when we come up with an entertaining surprise for a room, and trust me, we love designing the adventure just as much as anyone loves playing,” she smiles. history, facts, and real people in her designs. “We can make the experience as challenging or easy as you wish by giving you plenty of tips to help you out – or not – as you request.” Individuals, families, birthday parties, and large groups are all welcome, including kids who are old enough to read. If you want to catch the Attic room, you better visit soon because it is going to be replaced with a new room very soon! With four minutes to spare and many hints from Sage, we unlocked Elizabeth’s mystery and celebrated with a huge round of applause and laughs.
