shopping during the holiday season.

With the holidays approaching, it’s a pleasure to watch as everything on Amelia Island slowly becomes transformed by the joy of the holiday season. Of course, one of the most cherished traditions of the holidays is the exchange of gifts with those we love. The joy of giving is at the heart of the Christmas season, and finding just the right gift for someone special in our lives is a wonderful blessing. Each year in November, we take great pleasure in presenting our annual Holiday Gift Guide. Our goal is to highlight some of the fabulous finds available at our local shops during the holiday shopping season. Whether you’re searching for the perfect gift or sneaking something for yourself, we’re certain you’ll find it here on Amelia Island. We are always proud to showcase all the terrific shops that Amelia Island has to offer. We hope that you’ll relax with a cup of coffee and spend a few minutes looking through these great gift ideas. Perhaps we’ll save you that joy-killing road trip to the mall or a few too many clicks on your over-taxed index finger. Especially in this year of Covid, make sure to support your friends and neighbors in Amelia Island’s fine shops, where you’ll find personal service and a variety of unique gifts. With a little luck, maybe you’ll meet an old friend and share a little holiday cheer. Spending time with family and friends is the most important part of the holiday season. The Amelia Island community is a warm and welcoming place, and never more so than around the holidays, when the spirit of giving moves strongly through the island. It is a time of year to be especially grateful for the precious gifts of family, friendship, and community. Once again, we are happy to present as part of our monthly “Island Home” feature a preview of the Amelia Island Museum of History’s 2020 Holiday Home Tour. The Holiday Home Tour is an important fundraiser for the museum, and this year the tour returns to the Historic District with five beautiful homes dressed in their holiday finest. And with the Covid virus still with us, extra precautions are in place to keep tourgoers safe. We hope everyone enjoys the tour this year! Also in this issue, we feature a profile of part-time Amelia Island resident Jacques Pépin, the iconic chef, television star, and author, who is also an accomplished painter; celebrate the 100th birthday of Navy veteran Dick Henry in honor of Veterans Day this month; present another “Fernandina Faces” by Dickie Anderson on Peggy Bulger, Florida’s first State Folklorist; and much more. Best wishes to all for a Happy Thanksgiving! See you around the island!

Each November, we at the Amelia Islander Magazine like to highlight the many great holiday shopping ideas from Amelia Island’s outstanding local stores. We hope this year’s gift guide will help you find the perfect gift for everyone on your holiday list.

35 The Incomparable Jacques Pépin After visiting for a petanque tournament in 2012, Chef Jacques Pepin now spends the winter months on Amelia Island, where he loves to paint, his other passion.

43 A Veteran’s Day

51 Fernandina Faces

57 Island Home

With honors from Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, and his neighbors on Piney Island, Dick Henry celebrated his 100th birthday this year.

Florida’s first State Folklorist, Peggy Bulger, has lived on Amelia Island since 2011, but she and her husband, Doug, spend time each summer on another island: Newfoundland.

This year’s Amelia Island Museum of History’s annual Holiday Home Tour includes five beautiful homes in Fernandina Beach’s Historic District, with Covid safeguards.

ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS FUNDRAISER FOR BARNABAS GOES MOBILE!

GFWC WOMAN’S CLUB OF FERNANDINA BEACH CELEBRATES 100 YEARS Did you know the GFWC Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach has been serving our community for over 100 years? Organized in 1920, the same year women achieved the right to vote, 27 local ladies met in the city library with the goal of doing everything possible to improve their city – educationally and physically – which marked the beginning of our GFWC Woman’s Club. A century of serving our community’s arts and culture, civic engagement and outreach, education and libraries, the environment, health and wellness, domestic violence and prevention, and programs for juniors certainly calls for a celebration! To commemorate, a 100th birthday party will be held on Sunday Nov. 15 from 3 to 6 p.m. at their clubhouse at 201 Jean LaFitte Boulevard. The entire community is invited to join this reunion, where members from generations past will gather, including nearly a dozen past-presidents. In addition to opening its doors for the celebration, the GFWC Woman’s Club invites all local women to consider if they have a talent to share, an idea to better the community, or a desire to serve. All women are encouraged to bring their passions and join the group. For more information on the celebration or to get involved, visit www. fernandinabeachwomansclub.com.

It’s November, and so it’s time for Empty Bowls, the annual Barnabas fundraising luncheon. Empty Bowls is a symbolic reminder of the many “bowls” in our community that still need to be filled for people who struggle with hunger or food insecurity. In this particular year, the need for this event is as great as ever, with Barnabas having served more than 3,900 local households with heathy food, which equals 208,000 meals. Barnabas needs our support, and to keep attendees safe, the event is going mobile! In its lucky seventh year, this year’s event on November 20 is a drive-through experience. Guests will follow a route and enjoy entertainment, a delicious meal of soup from the presenting sponsor, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and a unique hand-painted bowl to take home. Barnabas Center expresses its gratitude for its legacy sponsor, Baptist Medical Center Nassau, and all the other generous supporters. Proceeds help Barnabas achieve its ongoing mission: to improve the stability, health, and well-being of individuals and families in need. Empty Bowls will be held near the municipal airport, and attendees can choose a reservation for either 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www. barnabasnassau.org/events/emptybowls.

BARTRAM GARDEN CLUB REMEMBERS AMERICA’S FIRST GREAT NATURALIST Before Lewis and Clark, there was William Bartram. In March 1774, Bartram began his much-anticipated trip to Florida and the St. Johns River, first setting foot on Amelia Island. He traveled through Old Fernandina to Lord Egmont’s plantation, and then continued to the St. Johns River documenting the region’s flora and fauna. Bartram introduced the world to over 250 native plants. In order to continue Bartram’s legacy, the Bartram Garden Club of Amelia Island will host Sam Carr and Mike Adams of the Bartram Trail Conference at their November general meeting. Sam Carr will discuss the establishment of The Bartram Trail National Heritage Corridor which memorializes William Bartram’s explorations. Mike Portrait of Bartram by Adams will bring history to life in his reenactment of the naturalist Charles Willson Peale using Bartram’s words and illustrations. The meeting is open to all history buffs, naturalists, gardeners, hikers, and anyone interested in the recreational trails and botanical gardens along Bartram’s route. The presentation will be held November 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the GFWC Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach. Masks are required at the entrance and seating will be socially distanced. To learn more, visit bartramgardenclub.org.

J

im Ratliff’s two goals in life were to become an artist and a college football coach. Surprisingly, he achieved both at a young age. But after a few years of coaching, he was ready to move on, and he opened his own human resources consulting firm in Ohio, where he lived for many years with his wife, Catharine. The couple moved to Amelia Island three years ago. Throughout Jim’s successful business career, art has always been his passion. Many of his oil paintings can be found in sporting clubs, private homes, and businesses coast-to-coast. “I enjoy oil painting and have spent a good part of my pastime capturing things that interest me,” says Jim. “But when I became interested in Native American history, especially the Black Hills and the Sioux Indian Nation, my art took an unexpected turn.” Jim realized that he wanted to explore this narrative with bronze sculpture. Sitting Bull, who led the Sioux resistance to the U.S. government’s westward expansion, was Jim’s first bronze sculpture, and the beginning

of the story Jim wished to tell. In his “Black Hills Collection,” Jim brings forth the history of horses, buffalo, gold prospectors, and the Custer expedition in vivid, elemental forms. “Bronze sculpture has added three dimensions to each of my art creations over the past ten years,” says Jim. “They have mass, weight, height, length, texture, color, and can be picked up, moved, turned, touched, polished, or removed at will. No, they are not alive, but they can tell a compelling story as effectively as a painting. There are not many things I can do that give me more joy than bronze sculpture.” But Jim tries not to take himself too seriously. He and Catharine laugh when he talks about how Chief Sitting Bull began as a sculpture of her. Each of Jim’s sculptures take six months to complete, and the artist works on multiple projects at a time. “The Black Hills Collection” can be viewed at Plantation Artists Guild & Gallery, online at www.jimratliff.art, and by appointment at his home studio. For more information, call (330) 714-8558.

Amelia Respiratory and Sleep Medicine

D

r. Kathia A. Ortiz-Cantillo of Amelia Respiratory and Sleep Medicine is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. She takes great pride in caring for patients who are suffering from today’s most common respiratory illnesses and sleep disorders. Originally from Barranquilla, Colombia, Dr. Ortiz-Cantillo lived in Albuquerque, San Antonio, and Chicago before moving to Amelia Island. “My patients often want to hear about the family farm back in Colombia. Yes, this fancy doctor knows her way around the pasture, too!” What does she like best about her new home? “I am grateful to be able to contribute to the wellness of the community here each and every day. And the ice cream in Fernandina’s ice cream parlors isn’t too bad, either! But seriously, my favorite aspect of the island is the charm and warmth of the people here. It’s so refreshing to get ‘hellos’ from perfect strangers, and I enjoy running into my patients in public places. I feel I have a huge family here in Fernandina Beach.” Dr. Kathia Ortiz-Cantillo’s mission is to improve and maintain her patient’s overall health and to empower them with an understanding of their condition and an individual wellness plan. “We know there is no such thing as a one-sizefits-all cure, so we never use a one-size-fits-all approach.” Amelia Respiratory and Sleep Medicine is located at 1560 Park Lane. To make an appointment, call (904) 304-9068 or visit their website at www.ameliarespiratorysleepmedicine.com.

olor It Green is a family-owned business. Laurie Moffitt, her husband, Jimmy Kalista, and their three daughters— Owyn, Kendall, and Shay Porter—found a way to combine their desire for a better planet and their love for their c ommunity when they opened shop in November 2014. Laurie considers herself lucky to be surrounded by people who share her same vision. “Carlin Catanzaro helped me open the original shop and she has been back with me for the past year-and-a-half. She’s my right arm, and we run this store together! Bill Ratliffe has been with us from the beginning. He helps us with everything from merchandising to windows to creating our displays. He’s one of the most creative and talented people I know! My husband, Jimmy, builds all of the displays and our daughter, Shay, helps with all things writing related. Kendyl and Owyn each have their own art line, The Happy Sea and Kosmixx, which you can find on different items such as clothing, stickers, and cards,” says Laurie. “We are proud to carry a wide variety of local artists’ work, as well as products that are produced ethically in the USA. So when you shop locally, you not only support us, you’re also supporting causes all over Mother Earth.” Color It Green has everything you need to get you started on your journey to living a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Jacques Pépin After visiting for a petanque tournament in 2012, Chef Jacques Pépin now spends the winter months on Amelia Island, where he also enjoys painting, his second passion.

J

acques Pépin, the iconic chef, television host, cookbook author, instructor, and artist, is also a beloved member of our Amelia Island community. This charming and unassuming man has captured the hearts of culinary fans around the world, and his accomplishments continue to grow. Winner of 16 James Beard Awards and author of over 29 cookbooks, Pépin has starred in 12 acclaimed PBS cooking series and is the recipient of three of the French government’s highest honors: La Légion d’Honneur, Chevalier des Arts et Lettres, and Mérite Agricole. He is currently the Dean of Special Programs at the International Culinary Center in New York, an adjunct faculty member at Boston University, and Oceania Cruises’ Executive Culinary Director. During the winter months, you’ll find Jacques, his wife, Gloria, and their poodle, Gaston, enjoying the restaurants, stores, and farmers markets on Amelia Island, and of course, playing pétanque. But what Jacques really loves is sharing his books and knowledge with his ever-expanding legion of fans. He can often be found at Story & Song Bookstore Bistro and the Book Loft for book signings, special events, and even cooking demonstrations. “We celebrate each time he and Gloria return to the island with a special luncheon and art show, and we talk about food, family, community, and pulling everything together around the table,” says Donna Paz Kaufman, owner of Story & Song Bookstore. Amelia island has become a place where he can unwind, find inspiration, and paint. “Jacques came here for boules, and he loves to stay in town to be around people. He has such a generous spirit, and he loves giving to the community,” says longtime friend Kate Harris. “This is his inspiration island.” 35 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Jacques Pépin

The Pépins first came to Amelia for an extended stay in 2012 for the international Pétanque Amelia Island Open. For years, Philippe Boets, president of Pétanque America, had been shipping boules to Gloria and Jacques in Connecticut. In 2009, when Philippe decided to move his organization to the island, Gloria asked him what it was like. Philippe told her, “If you put Key West in a blender with Nantucket and sprinkle in a bit of Georgia, that’s Amelia Island.” “I’m so grateful to Jacques,” says Philippe. “When I organized the first tournament on the island in 2009, he and his friends were excited to fly down and join in the competition. He even offered to do a book signing. You have no idea how many people came for Pépin, and then discovered pétanque!” In 2019, Jacques was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmy Awards, where he was recognized for his career as a television icon. Many of us know him through his cookbooks and TV episodes with Julia Child, but did you know that he is also a successful artist? “I have been cooking for more than 60 years, and I have been painting sporadically for half a century. Both are part of who I am, how I feel, and how I react to a sensual or esthetic experience,” he explains. continued on next page

Jacques applies the same focus and technique used in his cooking to his paintings. During his time on Amelia over the years, Jacques has discovered inspiration in everything from the beaches and tree-lined drives to the simple beauty unique to our island. His extensive collection can be found on his website at jacquespepinart.com. In 2016, the Jacques Pépin Foundation was created with his daughter, Claudine, and his son-inlaw, Rollie Wesen, to provide culinary training to disadvantaged people. Through their website, jp.foundation, people can access his latest videos, demonstrations, and learn how to support those in need. The foundation is working with leading chefs to teach volunteers how to cook healthy meals using ingredients found in local soup kitchens. In addition, a new membership program was just launched wherein members will have access to special digital publications, exclusive events, artwork, and much more. Today, during the Covid pandemic, Jacques has turned to Facebook and other virtual venues to share his craft. Working from home in his studio kitchen with longtime friend and photographer, Tom

Hopkins, Chef Pépin is bringing families back together around the table. “He is the consummate adapter. Stuck at home from Covid, out of an ingredient? Take what you have, get your family together, and don’t forget the wine,” shares Kate Harris. Showcasing his recent efforts to encourage more home cooking with less stress is his newly released cookbook, Jacques Pépin, Quick & Simple. In it, he shares streamlined techniques and how anyone can make good use of everyday ingredients. Currently, Jacques continues to write, produce videos, and paint. He and Gloria are safely ensconced in Connecticut and look forward to their next rendezvous on Amelia. In the meantime, you can learn from one of the world’s greatest chefs by visiting him on Facebook (Facebook@ ChefJacquesPépin), on Instagram, or at jacquespepin.org, where you will find treasures and simple pleasures.

a veteran’s day With honors from Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, and his neighbors on Piney Island, Dick Henry celebrated his 100th birthday this year.

BY JULIE SIMMONS

A

s the Roaring ‘20s began following the end of World War I, families bought their first cars, commercial passenger flights began, and American women voted for the first time. But for the Henry family of Albany, New York, those events couldn’t match the excitement of the birth of a son, Richard, on September 27, 1920. Dick, as he would be called, saw electrical power illuminate the country and appliances like refrigerators transform life at home. But in those years, he was more interested in running through the forests near his home, camping, and eating hot dogs and watermelon on the Fourth of July. Then, just after Dick’s ninth birthday, the Great Depression brought the Roaring 20’s to a close, and the struggle to make ends meet changed every American family. For Dick, that meant kneading bread at Polonia Bakery in Albany for 12-hour shifts, earning $1 a day. During this time, Dick was inspired by someone with the same name, Dick Tracy, who starred in comic strips featuring things like rockets and two-way radio wrist watches. “Little did I know that I’d live to see all of these things become part of life,” says Dick, shaking his head. Like Dick Tracy, Dick Henry served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. “I enlisted in 1939 when I couldn’t afford to go to school and work. The Navy offered both.” Henry was serving onboard the USS Helena in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, when the ship was hit by a torpedo. Thankfully, it stayed afloat. Henry served as a Fire Control Technician, overseeing the ship’s weapons. He was hardworking and talented, rising to the rank of Chief. A weathered continuous service record maps Dick’s Navy career, from Rhode Island to Massachusetts, Virginia, Hawaii, and to almost every continent. But his favorite stop was New Jersey. “It was here that I enjoyed a lunch near the Brooklyn Naval Yard and met June Baumann, whom I married on December 29, 1950.” The Henrys shared a lifetime of traveling and love for our country before June went to her eternal reward in August 2019. The duo were also fixer-uppers before it was popular. “June loved buying and refurbishing houses,” says Dick. “Last count, we’d turned over 24 houses, four of them on Amelia Island, continued on next page

our home for over 20 years.” Always a favorite of June’s was her house on a point in Piney Island. “She would never let us sell it,” he smiles. When Dick turned 100 this year, it was clear why she loved Piney Island so much. “Dick is remarkable, walking three miles every single day at age 100,” says his friend Lisa Peat. “We wanted to surprise him on his birthday weekend, and boy did the whole community rally around the idea.” As the sun began to dawn on Friday, September 25, the red carpet was rolled out on the streets of Piney Island, with nearly every mailbox flying balloons and dozens of homes displaying “Happy Birthday” signs and patriotic décor. Dick was completely surprised as neighbors greeted him during his walk to honor his 36,525 days on earth. But that wasn’t all. On Saturday, he enjoyed a cruise with Amelia River Cruises before a surprise birthday party. On Sunday, he was invited to raise the flag at Naval Submarine Base at King’s Bay, Georgia, before attending his weekly church service at Liberty Baptist. Sunday afternoon, over 50 neighbors in decorated cars were led by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office in a parade through his circular drive, where he stood beside his dear friend, Joy Slebos, waving in gratitude. “I admire Dick greatly,” Joy shares. “His integrity, loyalty, patience, sound advice, and especially his military history, which reminds me so much of my own late father.” In addition, Naval Air Station Jacksonville hosted a celebration for Dick and presented him with coins, a traditional military honor which originated in World War I. King’s Bay also gave him a party with an enormous cake, while Rear Adm. John Spencer, Commander, Submarine Group 10, presented Chief Henry with the flag he had raised the day before, a letter, coins, and thanked him for his 20 years of honorable service. And what’s Dick’s secret? “Eat your apples and oats, don’t stop, and live day-by-day!” he says. We at the Amelia Islander Magazine want to wish Chief Henry a Happy 100th birthday, and a Happy Veterans’ Day to all our service men and women.

Peggy Bulger BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM

P

eggy Bulger and her husband, Doug Leatherbury, divide their time between two islands: one small, Amelia Island, and one much larger, Newfoundland. Both are full of history and the stories Peggy loves to collect. A public folklorist working at the state, regional, and then national level since 1974, she remains active in the American Folklore Society as a Fellow. In addition, she serves on the Florida Folklife Council, the board of Florida Humanities Council, and the board of the National Council for the Traditional Arts. She also served on the advisory board for the Gullah-Geechee Heritage Corridor when it was first proposed. Peggy originally came to Florida in 1976 to be Florida’s first State Folklorist. Prior to her assignment, she had never been to Florida! Raised in New York State, she received her M.A. in Folk Studies from Western Kentucky University. Hired to conduct a statewide survey of folk culture and folk artists in Florida, she was based in rural White Springs on the banks of the Suwannee River at the Stephan Foster Center, home of the venerable Florida Folk Festival. When not working, she craved the beach and the Atlantic Ocean coast. The couple met while Peggy was in White Springs, and Doug was a park ranger at the Stephan Foster Center. Her 13 years as State Folklorist included the production of several documentaries, including “Fishing All My Days” in 1985. The project brought her to Fernandina Beach to interview shrimpers, boat builders, and net makers. From that time, the couple knew Amelia Island would be their retirement home, and they moved to the island permanently in 2011. When Peggy and Doug’s twin daughters (Meagan and Hannah) were born two months prematurely, the experience so impressed Doug that he decided to go back to school and get his degree in nursing, becoming a pediatric nurse. The girls are now grown, and a grandson has been added to the family. There has always been a Scottish Terrier in the household, starting with Angus, a wedding gift from friends. The fourth 51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

and current Scottie, Fergus, is quite the character, reputed to watch TV with enthusiasm. The couple fell in love with Newfoundland, their other island, in 1985 while staying in a traditional “outport.” The small town, Keels, with a population of 70, charmed them and evidently, they charmed the town. After returning home, they received a call from the mayor, who said he had found a house for them. They explained the timing wasn’t right, as Peggy was still in school and Doug was starting a new career. When the mayor shared that the house cost $500, the check was quickly in the mail. They have traveled north to Newfoundland for two to three weeks each summer since 1986, and for two months since retirement. COVID prevented their muchtreasured trip this year. As Peggy shares, she has not retired, she has “rewired.” Her community volunteer activities have included serving on the board of the Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library during their Capital Campaign to expand the library, and she is currently on the board of the Amelia Island Museum of History, assisting with the Heritage Keepers Project. The project is right up her alley—collecting oral histories of community elders. Like many committed community volunteers, Peggy and Doug can be seen often at the front line of events and nonprofit activities, either volunteering or participating.

IN THE GARDEN Diamond Spire Gardenia

gorgeous gardenia With comfortably warm days and cool nights, November is the perfect month for planting winter annuals and new beauties like Spider’s Web and Diamond Spire. BY BETTY MORRELL

D

ays are shorter, nights are longer, cooler breezes blow, and leaves are changing, showing fall colors of red, orange, and yellow. The colors may remind of us the approaching holidays, but, for gardeners, this season beckons us to plant, plant, plant. The weather is perfect, comfortably warm during the day and cooler at night. It is time to fill in those shrubs you want and continue planting winter annuals. Everyone knows by now, unless you’re a new reader, that my very favorite flower is the Gardenia. And guess what I just came across? A remarkable and unique new Gardenia called Diamond Spire. Diamond Spire is an upright columnar Gardenia with coin-shaped glossy green leaves and fragrant white daisy-like blossoms that rebloom spring through summer. It is an easy-care, heatand frost-tolerant plant that attracts birds and butterflies. Use Diamond Spire as an accent plant, container plant (one on each side of your entrance would be nice), or as a low hedge. It grows 3 to 4 feet high and 2 feet wide, in full sun to part-shade. Feed

TIP OF T HE M O N T H Don’t forget your pretty winter annuals: pansies, winter petunias, dianthus, and snapdragons. Dusty Miller can be planted, but it may not survive a freeze. Bulbs for spring and summer can also be planted.

it during the growing season. No pruning is needed, but if you want to shape it, do so after the fall bloom. Diamond Spire is a new Southern Living plant, which can be found at Lowes or Home Depot, when available. Love this one. Another fascinating new Southern Living plant is the “Spider’s Web” Fatsia, a lovely, rare evergreen with white splashing and dotting on broad, palmate leaves. This plant has large clusters of white flowers in spring. In addition to being an eye-catcher, this plant boasts a compact habit, growing to 4 to 5 feet high by 3 to 5 feet wide. It is disease- and pest-resistant, dwarf-sized, easy-care, heat-tolerant, and it has fall foliage color and year-round interest. Fertilize it during the growing season, and prune after flowering.

Use Spider’s Web as an accent plant, in mass plantings, rock gardens, woodland gardens, tropical gardens, or in containers. Plant in full sun to partshade. I want this one in my garden. Let me introduce you to Touch of Gold Holly. The bright golden leaves on this dwarf low-maintenance shrub certainly catch your eye. This rounded beauty will brighten any garden as a foundation planting, in a rock garden, as a small hedge, or as a gorgeous mass planting. Try it in a mixed garden, it will fit in anywhere. Touch of Gold grows to 2 feet in height and 4 feet in width. This easycare plant makes a great replacement for boxwoods in borders or containers. Plant in full sun to part-shade; it is droughttolerant, heat-tolerant, and needs little pruning. It is also disease- and pestresistant, with year-round interest. Feed this Holly in spring and shape it in spring before the first flush. This new Southern Living Plant certainly caught my eye. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. Happy Gardening!

AMELIA ISLAND MUSEUM OF HISTORY

2020 Holiday Home Tour The Holiday Home Tour returns this year with some changes to safeguard tourgoers. BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTOS BY ELIZABETH WILKES PHOTOGRAPHY

O

nce a year the Amelia Island Museum of History coordinates a much-anticipated two-day event that kicks off the island’s holiday season. Five beautiful homes in the Historic District will open their doors for the 2020 Holiday Home Tour, scheduled for December 4 and 5. Now in its 14th year, the annual event raises money to support Amelia Island’s popular history museum. Co-Chairs for the event, Penny Reid and Lynn Cromer, shared their enthusiasm. “We are immensely grateful to our five homeowners who are enthusiastically supporting the tour. The five homes offer a wonderful representation of the history of Fernandina Beach in the late-19th and early-20th centuries, and all decorated for the holidays.” Despite the challenge of social distancing and the requirement of masks, event organizers have planned a safe event. Changes include a ticketing system which requires a separate ticket for each house, and a scheduled time to visit each house. There will be no shuttles this year, so those participating will have to plan carefully as parking will be limited. 57 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

In previous years, homeowners purchased (for $35) a paper ticket they would physically carry from home to home. This year, to assure the safety of guests, volunteers, and homeowners, guests will need to purchase their tickets online. There will be no physical ticket sales at the museum or other outlets. Guests will select time and date (Friday or Saturday) and purchase each house separately ($7). Guests can select and schedule all five houses or fewer. This allows event organizers to limit the number of guests to 10 at a time. Guests will check in at each house at their scheduled time. Participants are urged to leave plenty of time between houses as parking will be limited. The traditional raffle with its variety of offerings will be held this year. Items will be displayed at the Walsh-Meyer’s house and include: a round of golf, jewelry from Lindy’s, paintings by island artists, a two-day rental of Rollin’ Phat electric scooters, a holiday wreath from Revelation Design, a gift basket from Amelia Toffee, and generous gift certificates from island shops.

28 NORTH 4TH STREET Ella and John R. Hardee House David and Cindy Jacoby Residence Holiday Décor by Coastal Cottage Amelia Dating to 1904, this house was purchased by Ella and J.R. Hardee when they moved to Fernandina Beach from Georgia in 1912. J.R. was involved in the thriving shrimp industry. They had seven children, who joined four from a first marriage. The large family needed more space and added all that currently exists on the left side of the front door. The current garage was originally a playhouse for children. It was a popular gathering spot for neighborhood children, who would put on shows for a nickel a ticket. The frame structure house has heart of pine floors. The home has four full baths, three of which still have the original clawfoot tubs and fixtures. There are five working fireplaces with original mantels. The large Hardee family has happy memories of the North 4th Street house. At Ella’s 100th birthday in 1980, there were 77 descendants: 7 children, 27 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 14 great, great-grandchildren. The house remained in the family until the Jacobys purchased it in 2019.

28 SOUTH 10TH STREET The Steamboat House Mike and Christie Walsh-Myers Residence Holiday Décor by the Heirloom Yard Surrounded by stately ancient oaks, the so-called Steamboat House was built in 1883 by William Bell. It was purchased by a local saloon owner from Switzerland, John Rutishauser. He later became the city’s first fire chief. Its appearance, with elaborate detailing and galleried porches, is reminiscent of a Mississippi sternwheeler, earning it the nickname the “Steamboat House.” The house, with its picturesque oaks, has served as a set for many movies, including the remake of The Manchurian Candidate. Like many other homes in the Historic District, the house has experienced many lives, including the housing of law offices. Once again a residence, the current owners have added full baths, a kitchen, and a sunroom in an addition on the north side of the house. The interior of the home retains its heart of pine floors, the foyer/parlor’s tin ceilings, and large pocket doors. A variety of artwork in the home showcases folk artists, as well as art from Brazil and Mallorca. The yard features traditional Southern plantings, including azaleas, camellia, and hydrangea. A carriage step engraved with the year 1901 and the initials JJR adorns the south lawn. NOVEMBER 2020

17 SOUTH 7TH STREET The Lucy Cottage Deborah Connor Residence Holiday Décor by Lillian Adeline Designs Affectionately known as the Lucy Cottage, this charming circa 1882 home is one of three on Seventh Street that is connected to the Thompson family. With a design described as Gothic Revival, it features decorative vergeboards on the east and south gables, with steep roofs, false dormers, and narrow lancet windows. The house has six fireplaces and custom details typical of the time it was built. It was not unusual for family groups to live close together. The home belonged to the sister of William Naylor Thompson, a Florida senator and railroad man who lived next door on the right. On the left, a brick home belonged to the son of Senator Thompson. It remained in the family through a series of Lucy’s. The last Lucy died in 1999. The current owner is the first owner outside the family to own the house.

110 SOUTH 6TH STREET Jerry and Cathy Stoddard Residence Holiday Décor by Amelia’s Treasures Like many houses in the Historic District, this house has had many lives. The original two-story gallery house was built in 1897 with a wing on the east side running south. The wing was moved sometime after 1926 to face 6th Street. The two-story wing had 4 rooms with a fireplace in each. In 1929, a kitchen and dining room were added, plus an additional room over the dining room. For many years, the house operated as a duplex. It returned to a singlefamily residence in the 1970s. Through the years, many extensive renovations occurred. The current homeowners bought the house in 2003. The house offers a variety of art items, both modern and dating back to King David. Throughout the house, art by family members has been collected, including the owner’s son, aunts, and grandchildren.

Many homes in the Historic District have ties to the Hardee and Partin families. This home was built in 1883 during the so-called Golden Era of Fernandina. The house has remained in the family and is currently owned by Neil and Martha (Partin) Blalock. The current restoration was started in 2019. With history in mind, there was a focus on original colors and layout consistent with the 1924 Partin home, with accommodations to modern needs. The house has happy memories of five generations of Partin children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Throughout the house, there are items collected from the current owner’s great, great-grandmother’s ancestral home, the Merrow House, which now houses the current Port of Fernandina Beach general office. The rooms are filled with artifacts from this amazing multigenerational home. A light fixture from a French chateau adorns the dining room. Pride in family tradition is evident throughout the house.

EATING SCENE

Leddy’s Porch AT THE FLORIDA HOUSE INN With its beautiful courtyard, Leddy’s Porch is perfect for a leisurely southern-style lunch or brunch, with favorites like Fried Green Tomato BLT and Chicken and Waffles. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY CHRISTY LELAIT

O

n a recent Sunday morning, I had the pleasure of meeting up with a friend for brunch in the coolest courtyard in town. Situated within the historic Florida House Inn, Leddy’s Porch is a beautiful setting for a brunch. On this cool autumn Sunday, I met my friend Jessica for brunch on the back porch, which overlooks the beautiful courtyard and its mermaid fountain. Leddy’s Porch is so named after a Major Leddy, who purchased the inn after the Civil War, during which it had been used to shelter Union troops. The Florida House Inn has a storied past, and an equally impressive present. When we arrived, the place was packed, so we left our name with the hostess and wandered the sidewalks admiring the sights and sounds of downtown. Before long our table was ready, and we found ourselves at a high-top table on the porch. Our server darted about making sure all his tables were well tended to, and despite the brisk pace, he was personable and attentive. We got started with an order of house-made Pimento Cheese and Lavosh. Pimento cheese, sometimes called the “Pate of the South,” is a popular southern staple. At Leddy’s Porch, it was luscious and worth the trip by itself, with the crispy lavosh a perfect accompaniment. We browsed the menu while we munched on the delicious spread, eventually settling on sandwiches: for me, the Crispy Chicken Sandwich, and for Jessica, the Fried Green Tomato BLT. The pace on the porch does not seem to slow. Early or late, this joint is jumping, which speaks to its lasting legacy. Customers came and went, locals and visitors alike, and the courtyard was alive with laughter and conversation. Our meals arrived hot and fresh from the kitchen, and we dove in. I was delighted with my choice, but I admit I was a little envious of the Fried Green Tomato BLT. The green tomatoes where fried golden brown, and delicious all by themselves, but on the toasted farmhouse bread, with applewood smoked bacon and buttermilk dressing, the 64 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

sandwich was a perfect ten. The Crispy Chicken Sandwich is served on a toasted brioche bun with crispy greens and the same yummy buttermilk dressing as the BLT. The chicken is surely the star in this sandwich. Marinated in buttermilk and dredged in seasoned flour, the chicken breast was exploding with flavor and remained tender and juicy, enveloped in its crisp golden crust. After our meal, we lingered for a while, finishing our sweet teas and soaking in the historic charm. Leddy’s Porch is a perfect setting for a sleepy southern Sunday.

Leddy’s Porch at Florida House Inn serves southern-style comfort food and is open for lunch Wednesday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The inn provides catering for up to 250 guests and more, including weddings, family reunions, and other special events. The courtyard and porch are adaptable to several seating layouts and themes. The Florida House Inn is located at 22 South 3rd Street in the heart of Fernandina Beach’s Historic District. coastal THANKSGIVING

his year has brought challenges across the globe, and we are all making adjustments to the way we do things. For instance, this Thanksgiving my husband, Troy, and I have decided to forgo the heavy turkey dinner and crowded Thanksgiving table by opting for a fresh catch coastal Thanksgiving, served al fresco with a small group of friends. Our plan is to cook and serve our entire meal outside on the patio, doing as much of the preparation as possible in advance to avoid the normally crowded kitchen scene of so many past holidays. But that doesn’t mean we’ve left behind our Thanksgiving traditions entirely. We are including our favorite autumn ingredients, like cranberries and pumpkin, to create a fresh coastal Thanksgiving meal. Our menu consists of Crab and Pumpkin Bisque, Grilled Grouper with Cranberry Remoulade, Marinated Green Beans, and Pecan Pie for dessert. We will be setting up 3-small bistro tables on our patio and keeping our group at 6 to 8 guests. We are also placing cocktail nibbles at each seating and providing guests with their own bottles of wine at each table. Even though the world is a challenging place right now, we’re excited about our new Thanksgiving and thankful for our many blessings and our beautiful island community. 80 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
