LETTER FROM THE
HOLLY ALLAIN PHOTOGRAPHY
STAFF Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers
AS THE PUBLISHERS OF THE AMELIA Islander Magazine, as well as Amelia Island Weddings, we not only mail the magazines to local homes, but we also send them to our friends and family who live in other parts of the state or country. While we receive lots of fun feedback, we’ve found that the issues of Amelia Island Weddings tend to be commented upon most frequently by our family members. In fact, my mother tells me that she almost always peruses Amelia Island Weddings as soon as she can, often while enjoying her morning coffee. Wedding stories document what is likely the most important rite of passage in people’s lives. Couples are leaving behind the old life and entering into a new one, a life that will bring unknown challenges and joys. At the threshold of this new life rests all of one’s hopes for a future filled with happiness and love. Seeing friends and loved ones at this magical moment in their lives is indeed a deeply moving experience. In fact, seeing any couple, acquaintance or not, at this pivotal moment of hope and love is heartwarming and affirming. Perhaps that is why people love to read wedding magazines, and why so many people comment when we come out with a new issue. We all love to share in a couple’s most important day, by reading

about their wedding celebration and, of course, seeing all those beautiful photos. The beauty of the occasion shines through in all weddings, large or small, lavish or simple. That is why—although I often reflexively address my editor’s note to brides and grooms—this time I wanted to acknowledge the many other readers who tell us that they’ve enjoyed the magazine. While many of them say that they have passed the magazine on to friends who have a family wedding coming up, others simply tell us how much they enjoyed reading about one story or another. So whether you’re planning your own wedding, know someone who is planning one, or just love to read those stories, we hope you will pour yourself a cup of coffee and peruse through the magazine yourself to steal a glimpse of these glorious and uplifting occasions.

8 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
THE WEDDING CELEBRATIONS WE DOCUMENT IN Amelia Island Weddings may vary in style, size, and level of formality, but they all begin with the decision to choose Amelia Island, a unique island getaway that is both accessible and a world-away-from-it-all. It is a setting endowed with a sense of beauty and serenity, a place big enough for exploration and yet small enough to get to know the locals and feel right at home. It is a place that doesn’t feel overwhelmed by throngs of visitors, but that nevertheless offers so many unique settings and venues to satisfy nearly every personality. A wedding on Amelia speaks to a love of natural beauty and serene surroundings and a desire to share that beauty with friends and family. It doesn’t take guests very long to discover Amelia’s unique allure. The vast stretches of beach, the scenic pockets of marsh, the moss-draped oaks—its beauty seems to resonate in the soul. And besides the much-loved nature, Amelia also boasts a wide variety of great venues with tons of charm. Wedding celebrations on Amelia differ from couple to couple: from barefoot, casual parties to lavishly elegant affairs, from a fivecourse gourmet dinner to a Southern barbecue, from beachside venues to beautifully-restored Victorians or historic buildings, the possibilities seem endless. With so much to work with, no wonder so many different couples find it an ideal place to create wedding memories to last a lifetime.

used in constructing their family’s old Georgia farmhouse. In the box was placed a very exceptional bottle of wine. The morning before the ceremony, Jessica and Jeffrey wrote love letters to each other and placed them in the box. The box was sealed before the wedding, not to be opened until their 10th wedding anniversary. “We worked together to put our own personal touch into every detail,” says Jessica. “From the ceremony to the reception, plus planning a fun weekend for our guests, we wanted everything to be special and unique.” Indeed, Jessica and her family put their individual touches on every aspect of the wedding. She, her mother, and her sister made homemade pear jam for all the attendees. The groom himself painted the guest AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15
book and a unique thumbprint tree. Mason jars graced the tables, and a Southern buffet brought forth warm memories of growing up in the South. The menu included homey favorites like grits, fried green tomatoes, macaroni and cheese, and even fried chicken and wafes. As with most destination weddings, Jessica and Jeffrey chose their venue also for its location, with the club’s close proximity to Amelia Island, historic Fernandina Beach and Jacksonville. Most of their guests stayed at The Residence Inn, Amelia Island, only a short walk from the beach, along with other locations on the island. Jessica and Jeffrey spent their wedding night at Elizabeth 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Pointe Lodge, in the fabulous Ocean House Tradewinds honeymoon suite. This third-floor suite has its own sundeck with a gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean. The Ribault Club’s wedding planner, Lorna Meehan, found the couple’s wedding delightful and beautiful. “I loved that Jeffrey and Jessica planned the wedding together, with so much thoughtfulness and consideration for their guests. They were wonderful to work with.” For Jessica and Jeffrey, the wedding was more than a one day affair: it was the commencement of their life together. Their special day was all about family, friends, a big, old, live oak tree, and a handmade wine box, to be opened 10 years from now, in another timeless celebration of their love. MANDY SUTTON AND BEN ZELINSKY STARTED OUT AS MANAGEMENT consultants who met on a job assignment four years ago, and their relationship slowly evolved from colleagues to friends to a couple. Both avid runners in New York City, they dashed straight to Amelia Island for their marathon of a wedding weekend in May 2012. “My husband Tom and I have traveled extensively, and we love Amelia Island for its charm and understated beauty. When we learned of our daughter’s engagement, it was a given that the wedding would be held here,” explains Mandy’s mother, Debi Sutton, who now lives at Amelia Island Plantation. On Wednesday of the wedding week, guests began to arrive from places like New York, Wisconsin, and Indiana, and they grew to love the island as much as the Suttons. Guests roomed at The Villas at Omni Amelia Island Plantation and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and each was presented with a welcome basket 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
made complete with white chocolate seashells from Fernandina’s Peterbrook Chocolatiers. By Thursday evening, everyone was in town, and the young gathered at The Surf Restaurant for dinner and entertainment, while the older guests enjoyed a wine tasting and dinner at Long Point Golf Club, which was organized by the bride’s father, Tom. Over the next two days, male guests competed in a golf tournament at the same location. The non-golfers in the crowd enjoyed fishing and catching a large shark aboard the charter boat, Heavy Hitter, with Captain Benny Hendrix. The ladies sunned and sipped margaritas poolside at Amelia Island Plantation’s Dunes Club. Friday evening brought the rehearsal dinner. “We invited all of the wedding guests to share in a pig roast and buffet at the Amelia Island Club’s Ocean Clubhouse,” explains Mandy. Much of the groom’s family is Polish, and they love what’s referred to in
the South as “a good pig-pickin’”—complete with an apple in the pig’s mouth. On the big day, the wedding party relaxed as their hair was styled by Julia Breeland of Images Hair Salon. Magna’s, A Full Body Salon, applied the party’s makeup. The girls then traveled to Walker’s Landing, a beautiful marsh-front setting on Amelia Island Plantation, for photographs, before Dana’s Limousine Service transported the ladies in a limo to the Amelia Plantation Chapel. At six o’clock, the bride, wearing a Kleinfeld’s Pnina Tornai gown, walked to her groom, and they were married by Rev. Ted Schroder. Following the ceremony, the guests and wedding party boarded Amelia Island Trolleys and arrived at The Ritz-Carlton’s oceanfront lawn for a cocktail hour. “With a lovely sunset, a breezy 70 degrees, and a string trio from Music by Pegge playing, the setting was just wonderful,” remembers Mandy. Catering Sales Manager Anastasia Stone explains that Mandy loved the beautiful ocean views of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, but didn’t choose a beach theme, as other brides frequently do. Instead, she opted for
simple ivory and black accessories, with nothing to distract from those views and the cool breezes off the ocean. The dinner hour was held inside the ballroom, and guests enjoyed a buffet that included Florida grouper and scallops. The Ritz-Carlton designed the cakes and flowers in the ivory and black color theme. “The beautiful part of Mandy’s wedding was her use of the traditional, formal elements of our resort, including our ballroom and antique Italian chandeliers to express her classic taste,” says Stone. The wedding cake was layered red velvet and dark chocolate, while the groom’s cake stole the show with its Wisconsin “W” shape and chocolate frosting. “Both of my parents and Ben attended the University of Wisconsin, so we had to celebrate with all of the huge fans at the wedding,” explains Mandy. Today, the Zelinskys are busy training for the New York City Marathon in November, 2012. But, on their vacations to Amelia Island, they look forward to slowing down and reminiscing about their beautiful oceanfront wedding. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19
Ginny & Jim THE FLORIDA HOUSE INN By Karen Miller
Photography by Pam Bell Photography
WHEN JIM ROTH DECIDED TO ASK GINNY GRAVES TO MARRY HIM, it took her by surprise. The two insurance adjusters, who had met at work during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, traveled in different directions for their jobs. But being the New Orleans gentleman that he was, Jim had already talked to Ginny’s parents, his parents, and their siblings about their upcoming engagement. “Yes,” laughs Ginny. “I was the last to know!” The couple was eager to plan a wedding that blended their families’ traditions. Ginny’s family was originally from Mississippi, but moved to Fernandina Beach in 1995. Jim’s family still lives in Louisiana. “We wanted to incorporate New Orleans, Florida, and Mississippi in a memorable wedding for our families,” says Ginny. 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
When the couple started searching for a venue, it didn’t take them long to set their sights on the Florida House Inn. Built in 1857, it boasts a storied history, a spacious courtyard surrounding its famous 350-year-old live oak tree, and enormous wrap-around porches. Add to that historic charm, its seventeen guest rooms, bridal suite, full catering facilities, on-site floral design, and a 200-guest capacity, and you have an ideal wedding venue. Innkeeper Emily Sands believes the inn’s special charm is perfect for a true, Southern wedding. “If you are a bride who likes a vintage, old-time feel, the Florida House Inn is for you,” says Sands. “My joy is wedding planning and floral design, and the Florida House allows me to blend the two seamlessly.”
The two families decided to incorporate some Louisiana flavor into their Florida-style wedding. The ceremony was held at the old First Baptist Church, followed by a traditional “second line” jaunt through the streets, hosted by the Dynamic Les DeMerle Band, featuring vocalist Bonnie Eisele singing “When The Saints Go Marching In.” Participants waved the customary white handkerchiefs and carried parasols while strolling through the center of Fernandina Beach on their way to the wedding reception at the Florida House Inn. “We loved everything about the Florida House,” says Ginny. “It was cozy and intimate—the perfect backdrop for our wedding.” In true Southern style, Ginny provided her own vintage china for the reception, reminiscent of her Mississippi grandmother’s refined way of entertaining. She even offered homemade fig jam that her mother made from scratch as a parting gift. Callahan Barbecue provided the food, which included prime rib, chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, pulled pork, and real, Southern cornbread. Many of the out-of-town guests stayed at the Florida House Inn, with others staying at the nearby Hampton Inn & Suites on the historic waterfront. And, since most of the guests came for the entire weekend, Ginny and Jim provided other activities throughout the island, including a ladies’ tour on Amelia Island Trolleys. Local photographer Pam Bell enjoyed photographing the festivities, which were joyous and full of character. “I have photographed over 300 weddings for sure, but this one was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime affair, and I was thrilled to be a part of it!” says Bell. Many unexpected photo opportunities added to the atmosphere of the wedding, including a perfect sunset over the harbor, the couples’ horse and carriage ride, and the unique touch of the “his and hers” parasols. “The location was walking distance to everything in the area, including the marina and restaurants,” says Ginny. “We also loved the fact that the Florida House is not compartmentalized. All of our guests and family were together in that beautiful courtyard. It reminded me of my grandmother’s parties. It brought back many memories.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21
Mariah & Gary SLIDERS SEASIDE GRILL By Karen Miller Photography by Red Queen Photography MARIAH AND GARY FOREHAND FIRST MET AT THE LEESBURG BIKE Festival in 2009, introduced by friends. Their first date, several months later, was a motorcycle ride to St. Augustine that lasted all day and long and into the evening. They began to see each other regularly, and they knew right then that they were made for each other. When Gary decided to “pop the question” to Mariah, he made the plan of a lifetime. The couple had booked a Caribbean cruise, and Gary’s intention was to propose to her on stage at a variety show, on the ship, in front of a huge, live audience. But alas, after he purchased the engagement ring, he could go no longer than six hours with it in his pocket, before he simply couldn’t stand it any longer. That evening, while the couple was singing karaoke in a local restaurant, Gary grabbed the microphone, and said, “Mariah, I’ve had the honor of calling you my girlfriend for the last two years. Now I would like the honor of calling you my wife.” To lots of applause and surprise, Mariah said “Yes!”, and the couple began the seven month preparation for their wedding. The wedding was to be held at Sliders Seaside Grill, a place that brings back fond memories for Mariah. Her grandmother worked there before Mariah was born, and her aunt worked there when she was very young. Mariah and Gary now are frequent visitors to the well-known local establishment. Since Sliders has recently been renovated to include a beautiful banquet facility and full catering services, it was the ideal place to hold their reception. The couple decided to get married on the beach, under an arbor that Gary built with his son, Derek, and the couple crafted their
22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
own origami, candles, and other decorations. Since Sliders provides all the food, linens, staff, and beverage services, Mariah and Gary were able to concentrate on having fun at their reception, letting Sliders handle all the details. The couple used as many local and personal acquaintances as they could for their vendor services—Teri Bishop from Red Queen Photography was their photographer, Hupp Huppman provided live music before the ceremony on the beach, and also the couple’s first dance. Greg Vierly of Cavsound and Productions provided all recorded music and video for the wedding, the dance music and video at the reception, and also supplied a time-lapse video of their ceremony on Sliders large, flat screen television. One of the perks that the couple loves about Sliders is their outside porches, and the beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the beach. Mariah adores the transformations at Sliders, the way the establishment stayed true to many of their original features,
which included using old doors for their tabletops, and keeping the venue “beachy,” yet sophisticated enough for a wedding. The 100 guests in attendance enjoyed appetizers, then a full buffet dinner of Sliders famous seafood and side dishes, such as crab cakes, chicken sticks, Southwest rolls, fried shrimp and flounder, onion rings, coleslaw, and salads. Their wedding party consisted of Gary’s two children, along with Mariah’s son and his girlfriend. But much more than that, many of the couple’s family members played a significant role in their wedding day. And that engagement cruise that Gary had planned? All was not for loss, as the couple changed the date, and turned it into a honeymoon cruise instead! And at present the couple still loves to sing karaoke whenever they can. They also love to pop over to Sliders now and then for a cold drink and a seafood platter, and talk about their special day—and how it couldn’t have been more perfect. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 23
Beth & Steve THE GOLF CLUB OF AMELIA ISLAND By Julie Simmons
Photography by Ashley Brooke, brookeimages.com
“THE BEST PART OF OUR WEDDING WAS THAT EVERYONE CELEBRATED with a joyful heart,” says Beth Messina of her March 31, 2012 wedding to Steve Cutler at The Golf Club of Amelia Island. And, for this couple, having a joyful heart has extra special meaning. They met by chance at a steakhouse in 2001, began talking, and soon started a long-distance relationship traveling up and down the east coast from Boca Raton, where she lived, and New York City, his home. In early 2003, Steve was struck with health problems that led to a heart transplant. Beth cared for him throughout his illness and recovery, and, in late 2003, the couple relocated to St. Marys, Ga. Engaged for 11 years, when asked, “Why now?” Beth laughs and says: “because we didn’t have a lot to do in 2012. It was time.” She wanted a formal wedding surrounded by her family and 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
friends—and this is just how their event evolved, with loved ones partaking in a sentimental blessing upon the couple. “Marriage is commitment with a period. A ceremony with our friends and family is commitment with an exclamation point,” says Beth. Close to 70 loved ones celebrated the wedding weekend, with some enjoying a stay at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation. A rehearsal dinner given by Steve’s family at Bar Zin Bistro and Wine Bar was a fun and delicious prelude to the wedding. Beth had discovered The Golf Club’s Fireplace Room a few years back at a golfing event. She knew, even before the wedding plans were in place, that the intimate setting would be the perfect space. The ceremony was originally planned on the Terrace, but rain forced the celebration indoors. “It was a very smooth transition,” recalls Beth. “The room twinkled with votives, there
were splashes of our navy, silver, and pink colors, and the beautiful wooden bookshelves surrounding the room were filled with framed photos of our family and friends.” Beth carried a satin-ribbon and crystal wrapped bouquet to which were tied her mother’s, father’s, grandmother’s, and Steve’s mother’s wedding bands. Artistic Florist designed all the gorgeous floral pieces, which filled the room. Following the 5:30 p.m. ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, where they sipped on a signature drink, “The Roxy,” named after the couple’s pooch. Appetizers included Sliced Salmon and Creme Fraiche Cucumber Wheels and an Artisan Cheese Board. The bride’s special recipe for Caviar Pie was happily prepared by Food & Beverage Director and Chef Kevin Krzeminki. The bride laughed that the chef presented the recipe better than she did! To begin the dinner hour, the bride’s friend sang the Etta
James song “At Last.” The Palmetto Catz with vocalist Richard Stratton played classical music throughout the evening, and guests gave toasts. The bride’s children live on a vineyard in California and treated all to a wine tasting. Next, a buffet was presented, comprised of Roast Beef, Mahi, and Chicken Lauderdale, with sides that included a Martini Mashed Potato Bar. Bliss Cupcakery prepared a delicious coconut cake, which the bride decorated with crystals, and guests also got to nibble on a selection of their decadent cupcakes. As a memory of the evening, Beth’s sister gave each in attendance a silver box of five Jordan Almonds, an Italian wedding tradition that wishes health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity upon the newlyweds. Those wishes are coming true for this couple, as they live each day with joyful hearts, ready to celebrate their new life together. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

arches, and detailed entablatures above beautifully paneled doors. Most of the rooms contain wainscoting, chair rails, and original terrazzo floors. “The facility is fully equipped for any size wedding, up to 350 guests,” says Meehan. “We have two catering kitchens, a lovely bride’s dressing room, and the rental includes tables, chairs, and banquet tables. I stay on site for the entire event, to ensure that the wedding goes as planned.” Meehan goes on to say that what clients love about the Ribault Club is that it is quintessential northeast Florida, reminiscent of the sumptuous South, with striking views and a gracious atmosphere. Most couples are drawn to the Ribault Club for its stand of live oak trees, dripping with Spanish moss. The backdrop offers a blank canvas on which many styles and decorative themes can be placed. Tiny Italian lights, satin drapes, and rose petals have all made their way onto the trees and grounds of the Ribault Club—with spectacular results. Another plus for families
desiring a destination wedding is that the venue is in close proximity to the Jacksonville airport and only 20 minutes from Amelia Island. So, in addition to enjoying a dream wedding at the Ribault Club, family and friends will enjoy shopping, fine dining, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, and, of course, the beach. Along with all that the Ribault Club has to offer, the energy and passion put forth by Meehan is also what draws couples to this exquisite location. “My own daughter was married here. I just love the young people I meet,” says Meehan. “It’s amazing how imaginative these young couples can be. Every wedding is special here.” The Ribault Club is located on Fort George Island, on Florida State Park land. It is open for visitors seven days a week. TRENDS IN
wedding Æowers By Julie Simmons READY OR NOT: EVEN WEDDING FLOWERS HAVE GONE viral! Amelia Island floral designers recommend that you go online when making your floral choices. “In the past three years, things have changed a lot in how brides are shopping for flowers,” explains Larry Miller, owner of Island Flower and Garden. “Brides used to come in, and we’d review photos to select what they liked. Today, brides surf the Internet and show up with a great idea of what they wish to duplicate.” Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, of Artistic Florist and Gifts, agrees. In fact, she has started boards on Pinterest (www.pinterest.com/braulersonaifd/) to help brides understand the trends and expense of the flowers pinned. “This is really helping brides financially plan for wedding flowers,” says Raulerson. “They have a visual image of the florals they can get for their established budget.” Miller agrees that a bride’s research really assists on the budget front. “As the bride shows me what she fancies, we discuss various ways to accomplish the look within the budget,” says Miller. “For 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
example, we often substitute a hybrid lily for a calla lily to save on a bouquet.” This season, as you begin to take a peek at the flowers online, you will see lots of color. “I am seeing tons of what I call ‘cosmetic colors,’” says Raulerson. “That means lots of soft pallets of mochas, crèmes, blushes, and peach.” Miller agrees and is designing in coral, orange, and especially peach. You will also see natural shapes, rather than the tight, meticulously gathered arrangements. Miller explains that the design trend is a hand-gathered look, with natural elements like wildflowers and thistles, exuding an airy feel. Raulerson agrees and has a Wild Flowers Pinterest board that offers a mix of urban and rural looks. Both designers encourage brides to consider the options for wrapping and securing the flowers: tulle, silver, twine, and raffia are all fun choices. The vintage style is huge today for wedding gowns, and Raulerson says that it can be utilized for flowers as well. “Brides are using anything old in their décor, like old chairs, old materials, burlap, and lace,” she explains. In flowers, the vintage theme is coming out in surprising ways, including the revival of baby’s breath. Raulerson also offers a Vintage Inspired Pinterest Board. “To accompany the vintage style, I often suggest Queen Anne’s Lace,” says Miller. “It’s a soft, feathery flower, and it shouts elegance and goes nicely with the strong lace the vintage style presents.” And this season, grooms are even included in the flower trend. “Boutonnieres are more stylish today—not necessarily big, but rather unique,” explains Miller. He sees the bride incorporating fabric bows that match the men’s ties into the boutonniere. Raulerson is seeing more masculine blooms used and boutonnieres that incorporate themed items, including foliage or even wooden buttons. “Another huge trend in boutonnieres is the use of a magnet instead of a pin,” adds Raulerson. Brides, it’s time to file those fingernails and click away to explore online and find the perfect floral design for your special day!

AN ENGAGEMENT
engagement ring FOR EVERY BRIDE By Gigi Grubner and Jennifer Ryals IT IS IMPORTANT FOR EVERY BRIDE TO SHOW HER individual style when planning her wedding, and the same goes for their engagement ring. More and more, society is moving away from the tradition of the man picking out the engagement ring and surprising his bride-to-be. Instead, many couples prefer to shop together to find the perfect ring to fit the bride’s style and personality. While colored stone engagement rings are still extremely popular this year, brides are begining to notice four other distinct trends. One of the most popular trends right now is antique or “vintage looking” engagement rings. These rings are always unique in their style and history. They are usually set in platinum or white gold and are perfect for the bride who has a more traditional or sentimental style. Going along with the antique trend is the still popular “halo” setting. Originally an icon from 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
the 1920’s and 30’s, this setting, with its border of diamonds encircling the center stone, has a vintage charm. This style is good for increasing the appearance of size when using a smaller center stone. In fact, the halo style can accommodate a range of gemstone sizes and budgets, making it an affordable but beautiful choice for many couples. This setting is the choice of celebrities like Natalie Portman and Carrie Underwood. Celebrities like Anne Hathaway and Kim Kardashian have been seen wearing engagement rings that are more square or rectangular in shape, such as the Princess and Emerald Cut. Brides need to pay close attention to clarity and color when purchasing an Emerald Cut diamond because inferior color and inclusions are more pronounced in this setting. The elongated shape of this cut is usually paired with accents on the side, which can be either diamonds or colored stones. The trim lines and sleek look make this a great choice for the bride with an elegant and sophisticated style. One of the most exciting trends in engagement rings—and really all jewelry this year—is the architectural detail element being incorporated in the design. These rings are treated almost as sculpture and are not only beautiful from the top, but usually have intricate design work done on the sides and sometimes underneath the ring. They are perfect for the bride whose style is one of a kind or the bride who wants to design her own ring. No matter what your personal style, there is an engagement ring for everyone in 2012. The most important thing is to go with what you love and not buy something simply because it is popular at the time. Your engagement ring should announce your style and who you are as a person to anyone you meet. It will be the one piece of jewelry that you want to treasure forever. Gigi Grubner is the owner of Amelia’s Fine Jewelry, located at 317 Centre Street, and is proud to offer exclusive designer pieces by award-winning artists, antique and estate jewelry, sterling silver items, chains, and charms, as well as custom-designed jewelry, redesign of existing pieces, repairs, and remounts. modern vintage Many wedding designers look to the past for their inspiration today. By Julie Simmons MOST BRIDES ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE OLD ENGLISH RHYME, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue,” which is the origin of the well-known tradition, according to which a bride wears or carries something of each for good luck on her wedding day. This season, when choosing a gown, brides may fulfill something old and something new at once if you choose to shop vintage! Modern vintage is quite hot this season, with designers Alfred Angelo and Justin Alexander presenting collections that are at the top of bridal fashion. In the 34 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
current collection of Justin Alexander Bridal, vintage wedding dresses are gowns that capture the feeling of decades past, especially the ‘20’s, ‘40’s, and ‘50’s. For over 10 years, Michael Shettel has been the exclusive designer for Alfred Angelo. Shettel explains that the world is fascinated with fashion traditions from the past. This is evident the success of television’s “Mad Men” and the resurgence of interest in 1950’s fashion design. Last summer’s British royal wedding and its strong link to the past is another source of fashion inspiration. It

is this fascination with the past that led him to reexamine the core of what is bridal. “For the launch of our Modern Vintage Collection,” explains Shettel, “I wanted to be true to tradition, but focus on modern love.” Key elements of the modern vintage collections include lots of lace and lace combinations, including chantilly, chiffon, and venice, in gowns that feature clean lines, defined waists, illusion necklines, beads, tulle, and ruffles. The Alfred Angelo gowns offer a variety of shapes, including ball gowns and form-fitting princess-inspired gowns that Shettel describes as, “timelessly glamorous, incessantly modern, and twinkling with crystallized elements.” He goes on to explain that these gowns “focus on contemporary and dimensional texture that lends five-star elegance to the fabrics, capturing the essence of youth and modernity with a touch of nostalgia.” From bridal gown designer Justin Alexander, the 2012 collection of gowns presents a variety of silhouettes, necklines, and colors.

Left: This Alfred Angelo gown features a chapel length train, lace over charmeuse, lots of rhinestones, crystal beading, and pearls to give brides the perfect glitter. Below right: This Justin Alexander gown presents a sheer venice lace sabrina neckline overlaying a traditional sweetheart neckline. The gown also offers a pleated regal satin cummerbund at the waist, a textured lace trumpet skirt, and chapel length train.
COURTESY OF ALFRED ANGELO
Bottom left: This Justin Alexander gown, with a strapless sweetheart neckline, comes with a removable, sleeveless sabrina lace cover up so that brides may choose a simpler or more detailed neckline. The modiÄed aline dress has intricate lace detail on its skirt and includes buttons over the back zipper leading to a chapel length train.
Options include a tulle or mermaid skirt, a mandarin or sweetheart neckline, and a cathedral- or chapel-length train. Vintage elements are also strong, but often updated. For example, adding a pop of color under a detailed lace is one way to accentuate the traditional look of a vintage dress, while giving it a new twist. Jewelry and accessories offer many opportunities to include “something new” in your walk down the aisle. A vintage-style gown offers continuity with the past, and perhaps that “something old” that you are looking for. This season, consider the charms of something old and something new with your gown—go vintage and see how it looks on you! 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

THE BEAUTY OF A
beach wedding By Lisa Presnell, PWC GETTING MARRIED WITH THE SUNSHINE ON YOUR face, the sand between your toes, the breeze flowing through your hair, and the sound of the waves crashing in the background—it sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Weddings on the beach are so beautiful. Beach weddings tend to be a little more costeffective and are ideal for elopements and small weddings. In recent years, they have become increasingly popular. There are, however, some important things you should consider before you begin planning. For a large wedding, ideally, you should secure a beach wedding with a local hotel or resort. They would handle the setup, obtain any required permits, and ensure your space at the beach. For those who like to do-it-yourself, the beaches on Amelia Island are public beaches. There are some areas that are more quiet than others. There is always a chance that someone else could be planning their wedding on the exact same day in the exact same place. Securing an area with a local hotel or resort can help you avoid this problem . 40 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
If you choose to do-it-yourself, check with the city or county to see if there are any permits or fees required when having a wedding on the beach in a public location. Beach weddings tend to be hard work. Setting up chairs and arches take time, so be sure to hire someone to set up and break down for you. Parking and restroom facilities for your guests could also be an issue. Be mindful of that in your search for a location. It could also be hot on the beach, so providing bottled water near the ceremony site would be a nice treat for your guests. You might also consider sunscreen, bug spray, parasols, and fans. What will you do in the event of inclement weather? You will definitely need a backup plan that you are comfortable with. As much as we would like to think Mother Nature will cooperate, she sometimes doesn’t. Don’t let that ruin your day. In the end, the result is the same: you will be married to the love of your life and celebrating with family and friends. Last, but not least, I suggest hiring a professional planner to handle all of the details for you. Often, you can purchase a package to include the officiate, photographer, flowers, chairs, and more. Many brides and grooms have learned that having all of the details handled for you is a worthwhile investment that allows you to enjoy a stress-free wedding day. All you have to do is show up! With proper planning— and a little help from Mother Nature—your beach wedding will be a fabulous day to remember. WILD HARVEST
wedding By Philip L. Standifer
AMELIA ISLAND IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO LIVE, WORK, and play, and, as couples from all over have come to discover, it is also a wonderful place to wed. At nearly any time of year, it’s not surprising to see more than one billowing white gown along the beach. Take a quick weekend bike ride through historic downtown Fernandina and you will see wedding guests chatting happily in the various porches or courtyards of our local bed and breakfast inns, while florists and designers are busy placing wreaths and arrangements on porches and in parlors. From the hotels and bed and breakfasts to the south end resorts, island brides and grooms are discovering lovely places to celebrate their marriage. No matter where the ceremony is held, there are two things all weddings have to be: special and beautiful. Designers are entrusted with the task of customizing an event specific to the bride and groom—and each couple is different. One of my favorite concepts is the “Wild Harvest” wedding. Every season on Amelia offers some beautiful and exciting options to embellish table tops, arbors, wreaths, and altars. Local cedar trees offer powdery blue berries born upon lush fragrant dark green foliage, perfect for door wreaths. 42 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Whenever I come across a new or different leaf or flower in the wild, I test it for longevity, measuring it in different scenarios. I began this study while working in a private residence on Cumberland Island. With last-minute parties and no way to get to town quickly enough, I turned to the forest and garden for anything beautiful to fill a vase or dress a mantle. It proved to be an experiment in local botanical culture, as well as an historical reflection upon the Victorian era, when garland and arrangements were often made of local foliage, along with fruits and nuts. One of my favorite botanicals is good old faithful Spanish moss. Our local variety, Epiphyte, may be manipulated in more ways than one might imagine. What about the redbugs? I have worked with Spanish moss for more than a decade with only one minor irritation. Simply microwave the moss for 15 to 20 seconds or mist with rubbing alcohol to eliminate pests. Harvest carefully in case a friendly local mosquito-eating bat is relaxing inside! At a recent beach-front wedding we used Spanish moss to make a screen to disguise an unsightly view. It can also be made into a small rope to tie bouquets for attendants and makes a great addition to boutaineers and corsages. At a recent oceanfront venue, I was faced with the challenge of creating a partially enclosed ceremony space, without blocking the view. What to do? Bamboo! Tapping into a local farm resource for very little cost, we made a bamboo fence row about twenty feet tall. Along the ground level, we partially buried palm fronds in the sand and splurged for tropical Heleconia from our floral designer. Your florist can help you to get the most beautiful flowers to complement your harvested items. At one event at Walker’s Landing, we lashed together branches, wrapped them with white lights, and hoisted what became a custom chandelier, under which the couple had their first dance as husband and wife. Whether you choose the beach or town, north end or south, you are sure to find just the right venue and just the right designer. Be it an extravagant destination wedding or a simple elegant affair, Amelia Island is great place to wed. Philip L. Standifer is a regional freelance garden designer and horticulturist (Auburn) working locally with InsideOUT Home & Garden.

honeymoons ON AMELIA
By Karen Miller FOR MANY, AMELIA ISLAND HAS BEEN ONE OF Florida’s beloved vacation spots for generations, yet it is still something of a well-kept secret. With its natural beauty and Southern charm, not only is it a delightful place to get married, but it is also an exquisite honeymoon destination, with a quiet, unspoiled ambience. Rich in history and pristine natural beauty, Amelia Island’s beautiful ocean beaches and quaint appeal beckon couples and families to reconnect with the things that matter most in life. There’s a lot of work that goes into wedding planning, and usually by the time the vows are exchanged, the bridal cake has been cut, and the last guest strolls back to his or her hotel room, the newly married couple is eager to spend some time alone. Fortunately, Amelia Island abounds in upscale, world-class bed and breakfast inns, exclusive restaurants, and championship golf courses. There is much to do and see around the island, and lots of time to rest peacefully in each other’s arms before setting out to start a new life as husband and wife. For couples who love the outdoors, Amelia Island offers a wide range of choices, from golf and kayaking to surfing and biking. If relaxation is your 44 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
preference, there are numerous places to enjoy spa treatments, fine dining, music, and art galleries. No matter what your choice, a honeymoon on Amelia Island will be a memorable one. In the center of Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed and breakfast inns in the country. Recently named the number one property in Conde Nast’s 2012 Gold List, the inn boasts striking Italianate architecture, along with rooms that are charming and comfortable, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton provides wine and chocolatecovered strawberries upon your arrival, as well as spa robes, upscale amenities, and free WiFi in the rooms. “We cater to romance,’ says Hamilton. “We are all about quiet, romantic getaways, and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens and all rooms have coffeemakers. A two-course breakfast, complimentary use of bikes, a pool and beach equipment, along with evening beverages and hors d’oeuvres, round out the carefree pampering that couples will remember for a lifetime. Equally charming is The Amelia Island Williams House, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on a quiet street close to the town center. This award-winning inn features charming spacious guest rooms with working fireplaces, baths with whirlpool tubs for two, elegant bedding, and all of the amenities you need for an atmosphere for romance and relaxation. Their honeymoon packages feature chocolate-dipped strawberries, dinners for two, and romantic horse-drawn carriage rides through the quaint seaside town. A threecourse gourmet breakfast is served each morning in the dining room, plus complimentary beverages and snacks are available all day, as well as bikes, beach towels, and guest chairs for relaxing on the beach. Innkeepers Byron and Deborah McCutchen invite you to sit on their wide verandahs underneath live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss while you “wine” down the day, and enjoy views of their serene gardens, fountains, and koi pond. The Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast, located in downtown Fernandina Beach, is an elegant 1905 Queen Anne-style mansion of gracious living of yesteryear. Known for its inviting guest and sitting rooms, three-course gourmet breakfast, and luxurious amenities, this inn speaks of romantic elegance. Honeymoon packages include chilled champagne and fresh roses in the room, the use of the inn’s bicycles, and a large heated pool and spa. In addition, the Hoyt House has a private twobedroom, two-bathroom motor yacht available for full-day, overnight, or sunset cruises.
Luxury honeymoon packages filled with romance, pampering, history & fun.

Located just steps from the Atlantic Ocean is the Amelia Hotel at the Beach. This locally owned and operated hotel is convenient to area attractions, dining and shopping. “Our hotel offers spacious guest rooms with a location designed to leave guests with great memories at affordable prices,” says Holly Germano, General Manager. “Guests love the comfortable rooms with abundant amenities, Hot & Healthy Breakfast, as well as our evening refreshments—and our Lobby Lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a night cap.” If you’re looking for a small, intimate lodge where you can fall asleep to the sound of the surf, perhaps the Elizabeth Point Lodge is right for you. With architecture reminiscent of Nantucket, it combines the twenty-four-hour service of a large resort with the quaintness of a boutique hotel. Breakfast is served in an oceanfront sunroom, after which you can settle into the rocking chairs on the porch to finish the morning paper, before plunging into the beckoning waves. “The majority of our honeymoon couples have chosen our Tradewinds oceanfront suite, which is decorated in a West Indies motif, and includes its own private sunning porch,” says owner David Caples. “Add to that around-the-clock concierge service, and a friendly, knowledgeable staff, and you’re sure to have a very special experience.” Amelia Island is also a great jumping off place for other destinations. The Travel Agency, a local, full-service travel source, offers a network of contacts and experienced and well-traveled agents who can provide honeymoon packages with VIP status worldwide. Honeymooning couples are known return again and again to Amelia Island, to recreate their special day. It’s an extraordinary place where new lives begin, and memories are made to last a lifetime.
