LETTER FROM THE
With each issue of AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE, we have the pleasure of presenting one of the most important occasions in anyone’s life: their marriage. It gives us a lot of satisfaction to present in these pages some of the wonderful couples who are beginning their lives together with great hope. These uplifting stories of love are always inspiring. Wedding stories document one of the most important rites of passage in life. Couples leave behind their former lives to enter together into a new one, a life that will bring new challenges and joys. Witnessing friends and family members experience this moment is deeply moving. In fact, seeing any couple, acquaintance or not, at this hopeful moment is heartwarming and life-affirming. Perhaps that is why people love to read wedding magazines, and why so many people comment to us when a new issue appears. The beauty of the occasion shines through in every wedding, large or small, lavish or simple. In this issue, we are happy to present to you once again the special stories of a few couples who created their scrapbook of unforgettable memories right here on Amelia Island. As we have noted before, Amelia Island is one of the top destinations wedding spots in the entire United

States, and it comes as no surprise. Amelia Island is blessed with historic churches and stunning natural beauty. Couples can enjoy an oceanfront ceremony or reception, panoramic marsh vistas that run out to the Intracoastal Waterway—which can include an unforgettable sunset in the early evening—or beautifully manicured golf course greenery with a backdrop of elegant oaks. All of these romantic settings can be enjoyed at the many wonderful venues—great and small —here on the island. One reason why Amelia Island is such a popular place to get married is that a couple can really have the wedding of their dreams here, whatever their dream may be. In this issue, as is often the case, we have the pleasure of featuring a few couples with deep roots on Amelia, who returned home with new friends to join old friends and family for a wonderful wedding weekend. Their stories are always fresh, and always inspiring. In addition to the few weddings we are able to feature, we want to congratulate all the couples who have joined their lives together on Amelia Island in the past six months, celebrating weddings that remain hidden from view. They are private affairs, gracious celebrations that bless the unions of couples who have decided to join their lives together in marriage. We hope you will enjoy reading this issue of Amelia Island Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Whether you’re a resident, a frequent visitor, or a newcomer to Amelia, we know you will see the extraordinary wedding possibilities available to you on this lovely 13-mile-long barrier island.

Jennie selected the historic Ribault Club on Fort George Island as the wedding venue, and she worked with her mother and Lorna to plan the perfect day. Jennie’s bridesmaids, including her childhood best friend, Jackie Olbina Miller, two of her cousins, and friends from college and law school, joined her in September for a “bachelorette weekend” at a historic family home in Atlantic Beach. The bridal party hit some of the same nightspots Jennie’s mother and her bridesmaids visited during her bachelorette party 30 years before. After the late Friday morning rehearsal, Jennie’s grandmother and aunts hosted the bridesmaids’ luncheon at the Timuquana AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15
Country Club in Jacksonville. Out-of-town guests were treated to a spectacular view of downtown Jacksonville, and they enjoyed getting to meet Jennie’s extended Jacksonville family. Justin’s groomsmen included Jennie’s brothers, Ben and John Morrissey, as well as his cousin and friends from high school and college. Justin’s family hosted the rehearsal dinner at the Morrissey home on the Friday evening before the wedding ceremony, where forty guests dined on tables set on the back lawn. On November 7, 2015, before 150 guests, Justin and Jennie exchanged vows in the late afternoon light under an ancient oak tree on the Ribault Club lawn. A classical trio played before and during the ceremony. Jennie wore an A-line Justin Alexander gown with a lace topper for the ceremony. Her exquisite Belgian lace veil was a family heirloom, belonging to her aunt, “Beezie” Towers, who had lived in Jacksonville. Mrs. Towers, who had five daughters herself, had purchased the veil in Belgium in 1959. After the traditional ceremony, guests were served cocktails on the clubhouse terrace before moving into the beautifully set dining room for dinner. Jennie had worked with Nonie’s Catering to create the perfect regional dish: shrimp and grits, 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
along with parmesan encrusted chicken. The couple sliced a vanilla and red velvet wedding cake from Alley Cakes Bakery of Neptune Beach. Oliv’r Twist provided libations and the Darren Ronan Band played dance tunes late into the evening. At the end of a wonderful evening with family and friends, the newlyweds left the reception in a vintage white Rolls-Royce—the perfect car for the 1920’s elegance of the Ribault Club. The couple left the next day for a week on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Jennie later told her parents that her wedding was “everything she had wanted it to be.” Many out-of-town guests from Justin’s home state of Vermont stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Fernandina and enjoyed visiting the restaurants and night spots. Jennie and Justin arranged for school buses to pick them up for the ride to Fort George Island on the wedding day. Out-of-town guests and members of the wedding party were treated to a Sunday morning brunch on the terrace of the Morrissey home. Ninety guests enjoyed quiche, Bloody Marys, and mimosas while remembering the wonderful time enjoyed by all the night before. Justin and Jennie left that afternoon for Costa Rica—a well-deserved rest after a full wedding weekend! AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17
Alyse & Matthew WALKERS LANDING By Karen Miller Photography by Watson Studios
Sometimes love needs a little help, and for Alyse Newton and Matthew Goolsby, it was an online dating service that brought them together. Alyse grew up on Marco Island, Florida, although her family divided their time between South Florida and Toronto, where her father works. She moved to Jacksonville in 2005 to attend the University of North Florida, and that’s where she met Matthew, who was working as an environmental engineer. Sparks began to fly, and after three years of dating, the couple became engaged on Captiva Island during a family vacation. “Everyone knew Mathew was going to propose, but I had no idea!” remembers Alyse. “After a walk on the beach, we returned to the beach house to find a bottle in the sand with a piece of paper in it. I pulled out the note, and it read ‘Will you marry me?’ It was so romantic, and we got to celebrate our engagement with my family that weekend.” Despite her connection to Marco Island, Alyse wanted to hold her wedding ceremony and reception on Amelia Island. “I feel that Amelia Island has much more diversity, and more options for a destination wedding.” The couple chose to have their ceremony at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort on the Oak Point Lawn, and then hold their reception at Walker’s Landing. “We love the beach,” says Alyse. “And Matthew loves golfing. Oak Point Lawn was the perfect atmosphere—it’s absolutely gorgeous, and it was easy to have our guests shuttled to the reception.” Alyse and Matthew had a wedding party of twelve,
18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
which included numerous family members, plus friends from high school and college. The ceremony was officiated by Pastor Bob Hovey. “Matthew and I decided to write our own vows,” shares Alyse. “That part of the wedding meant so much to me, to hear him say those things from his heart. That was the most special part.” The couple wanted to keep the reception simple, yet elegant, for their 130 guests. “We love the landscape and rustic qualities of Walkers Landing,” says Alyse. “We decorated with burlap, lace, and neutral colors. The Omni provided an amazing array of buffet stations, including an iced seafood station, salad bar, kabobs, and passed hors d’oeuvres.” Music was provided by the Atlanta Wedding Band, the highlight of the evening. “The band had as good a time as our guests, so much so that they didn’t even take their second break! Everyone was on the dance floor!” To help pull everything together, Alyse enlisted a wedding planner from Asheville, North Carolina. “She had been my sister’s wedding planner, and we just loved her.” Alyse also used
local vendors, including Artistic Florist. “Brooke and Aubri are incredible floral designers,” says Alyse. “Brooke is so passionate about what she does, and that makes it so easy to work with her.” Alyse and Matthew’s guests stayed at various locations around Amelia Island. Some came for the day from Jacksonville, others stayed at the Omni Resort, some in condos at the Plantation, and some at other hotels. The couple wanted their guests to experience their destination wedding as they would a true vacation, and their wedding guests enjoyed a myriad of island activities throughout the weekend. At the time Alyse and Matthew booked their wedding, the Omni Resort was offering a special honeymoon package. After a farewell Sunday brunch, the couple went off to spend two nights at another Omni hotel in Cancun, Mexico, and then two additional nights at a Ritz-Carlton resort, also in Cancun. “Our honeymoon was wonderful,” says Alyse. “The weather was supposed to be rainy the entire time, but it wasn’t! It was perfect. In fact, everything about our wedding and honeymoon was perfect!” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19
Cassidy & Chris FLORIDA HOUSE INN By Karen Miller
Photography by Andrew + Cass Photography
Cassidy “Danielle” Shaw met Chris Bryant at an oyster roast in Jacksonville Beach in 2009, where Chris burned his fingers shucking oysters without a proper glove. Cassidy came to his rescue with a first aid kit, and the two were instantly drawn to each other. After getting to know each other, Chris suggested a real date—a canoe excursion on the Intracoastal Waterway. “I thought to myself, ‘how romantic!’” says Cassidy. “Unfortunately, Chris was unaware of the low tide, and we ended up being stuck a mile into the marsh. That could have ruined everything, but then he became my knight in shining armor, carrying me on his back to safety, canoe in tow. We were inseparable after that!” When Cassidy and Chris met, he had recently graduated and was working at a specialty condiment supplier, while Cassidy was 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
attending the University of North Florida. She had grown up on Amelia Island, and she had a strong connection to the community, as her mother Ronda Shaw owns Eight Flags Antique Market on Centre Street. Upon graduating, Cassidy took a job in Charleston, West Virginia, where the couple purchased their first home, a fixerupper. After months of renovating it themselves, Chris proposed in their new living room. “I knew I wanted to marry Cassidy for a long time before I actually proposed,” says Chris. “When we went to visit her family in California, I asked her dad for her hand in marriage, and thankfully Mr. Shaw graciously approved!” It was an obvious choice that their wedding and reception would be held on Amelia Island. “I wanted our wedding to reflect my love for the natural beauty and history of my hometown,” says
Cassidy. “And I wanted our guests to experience that, too.” After a visit to Fort Clinch State Park, the couple fell in love with one of the vaulted-ceiling bastions for their ceremony, with the reception to follow at the Florida House Inn, two of the most historic sites on the island. The bride’s mother hosted a tented rehearsal dinner at her 1930s beach cottages with the help of Chris’s parents, serving a low country boil, roasted oysters, and Key Lime pie shooters. “It was a real beach party!” laughs Cassidy. “We all sat family-style at long tables, enjoying the ocean breeze.” The following day, the wedding ceremony was especially moving, as the couple paid tribute to their parents. Karen Roumillat officiated under a romantic arbor covered in beautiful floral swags created by Dottie B. Florist. Cassidy’s mom, using items from her antique shop, decorated the ceremony with rustic décor, including an array of reclaimed lanterns that lit the tunnel leading into the bastion. After the ceremony, Amelia Island Trolleys transported the guests to the Florida House Inn, where they enjoyed a cocktail hour with a delicious spread of artisan cheeses, fruit, and passed
hors d’oeuvres. While guests sipped on signature cocktails, the newlyweds were treated to a carriage ride by Old Towne Carriage. Upon the bride and groom’s arrival, the guests were seated for dinner. “The buffet dinner was amazing, with all our Southern favorites, like shrimp and grits, short ribs, collards, and mashed potatoes,” remembers Cassidy. DJ Kevin Snow of Jacksonville kept the guests on their feet, Nana Teresa’s Bake Shop sweetened the reception with a triple layer cake. Lisa Presnell of Coastal Engagements coordinated the day’s events. After the reception, everyone moved next door to the Green Turtle for an after-party. Chris and Cassidy spent an incredible honeymoon night on Cumberland Island at the Greyfield Inn. “It was truly a dreamcome-true wedding! All of our loved ones pitched in and pulled all of the details together to make our authentic Florida wedding a reality,” says Cassidy. Today, Cassidy and Chris have grown fond of their life in West Virginia, but are feeling a little wistful about Amelia Island. “I’ve always felt that someday we are destined to move back to the island,” says Cassidy. “And, hopefully, that day will come soon.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21
Chasta & Brett GOLF CLUB OF AMELIA ISLAND By Julie Simmons
Photography by Susan Scarborough, Smitten Images
It was a casual day on the water for Chasta Fletcher and Brett Moore when he cruised into Fort George Island to visit the historic Ribault Club, a place Chasta had always wanted to explore. As they wandered under a canopy of oaks, Brett got down on one knee, as tears flowed down his bride-to-be’s cheeks and champagne corks popped and cheers poured from the shrubs, where both families were hiding. On her finger, Chasta discovered her fiancé’s late grandmother’s diamond—a gift from Brett’s mother—custom designed by “Aunt Lindy,” otherwise known as Lindy Kavanaugh of Lindy’s, a favorite Amelia Island jeweler. Chasta was ready to start planning her wedding right away. The couple hired Susan Scarborough of Smitten Images for engagement photos, and that session sparked some great ideas. “First, we borrowed Susan’s crystal chandelier and hung it in 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
the woods for our engagement photos,” the bride explains. “Then we started talking about my gown, and Susan offered the imported Italian lace from her wedding gown to create sleeves. She was an incredible resource for making our engagement and wedding a success.” Chasta enjoyed choosing the décor and special touches that created the couple’s unique and romantic garden-themed wedding. “We used a neutral palate of creams and blushes with highlights of moss green,” Chasta says. “I collected over two hundred vintage brass candle holders of all shapes and sizes, which we used on the reception tables for a candle-light dinner.” The bride was grateful for the assistance of her family, who traveled from Louisiana the week of the wedding and love to craft as much as she and her mother do.
When the wedding weekend arrived, over fifty friends and family gathered at Stay N’ Country Ranch in Yulee for a low country boil rehearsal dinner. “Brett wanted a cornhole board for the party, which we customized with our wedding logo and colors.” Lots of special touches, plus entertainment from a DJ, made for a memorable kickoff event. On the day of the wedding at Amelia Plantation Chapel, Chasta set down her bouquet, held hands with her aunt and first cousin – her maids of honor – and prayed. “I will never forget the calm that washed over me at that moment,” she confides, as she prepared for her father and uncle to give her hand to the groom. “Then the doors opened, I heard the violinist, Brett and I made eye contact, and everyone else disappeared.” The reception was held at The Golf Club of Amelia Island, and guests were treated to stunning decorations created by the bride, her mother-in-law, and Susan, including a vintage five-foot gilded bird cage filled with fresh moss, lush cottage roses and flowering cherry branches—with the wedding invitation suspended from a golden perch—that welcomed guests.
After dinner, the party moved outdoors for live music by Chilula Band under lights hanging from the Spanish oaks. The bride’s uncle constructed a 12-foot wooden pavilion for the occasion, with the crystal chandelier Susan offered for the engagement photos crowning the space. The couple enjoyed their first dance under the pavilion and cut one of their six cakes prepared by Nana Teresa’s Bake Shop there. “We had five cakes for guests in different flavors and sizes, plus the groom’s cake created to look like a Yeti cooler with a sizeable Mahi on ice,” the bride smiles. As the evening drew to a conclusion, guests departed with mini monogramed boxes filled with the couple’s favorite chocolate and a photo booth picture and frame. The bride and groom, blessed with love from family and friends, retired to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Today, Chasta and Brett reside on Amelia Island and enjoy entertaining guests under their backyard wedding pavilion. In March, the couple welcomed a daughter, who today sleeps under the crystal wedding chandelier, upon which hang memories of a beautiful Amelia Island wedding. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 23
Haley & Brian WALKERS LANDING By Julie Simmons
Photography by Pam Bell Photography
What does a girl do when her boyfriend presents her with an invitation to an opera at Lincoln Center in New York City when she’d rather watch the University of Florida Gators beat Kentucky in basketball? Ask Haley Askew, who found herself in just this predicament. “Why, you roll your eyes during the phone invitation and agree with Brian that we should enjoy some city culture in the snow,” the bride-to-be laughs. “When we got in front of Lincoln Center, Brian suggested we pose for a photo, and someone who I thought was a bystander took our picture. Then Brian said, ‘one more,’ and that’s the photo where he’s on one knee proposing,” smiles Haley. “The bystander was a friend of his, who then joined us and many other friends at our favorite restaurant for cocktails and that basketball game!” 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Brian Deal graduated from Fernandina Beach High School before meeting his fiancé at University of Florida. Haley was raised in Orlando, and after two years of long-distance dating following college, she was eager to join Brian in New York, where he was working for Wells Fargo in private wealth management. The couple love living in the city among their friends, but they were looking for a more relaxed setting for their wedding. “Amelia Island was the perfect place to gather and celebrate our marriage. A weekend getaway for some, and home for others,” Haley confirms. Memorial United Methodist Church, where Brian’s parents are members, was the altar for the “I do’s,” and Amelia Island Plantation would serve as a marshfront backdrop for their celebration. Haley’s mother rented a home on Fernandina Beach’s historic American Beach, and the bride joined her. Friends began to arrive,
and they enjoyed their stays at the downtown Hampton Inn & Suites and the Residence Inn by Marriott Amelia Island. The visitors enjoyed the local nightlife with the bride and groom at the Salty Pelican and Green Turtle Tavern. On the wedding day, the Hunter family offered their Amelia Island Plantation home for the bridal party to dress. “Teresa decorated with photos of us and served lunch and mimosas,” Haley graciously explains. “The bridesmaids wore button-down, matching J.Crew shirts that were a thank-you gift for standing with me.” Natalie McBride of Swoon-Worthy Events assisted with wedding-day coordination, and Pam Bell of Pam Bell Photography captured every detail on film. When four o’clock arrived, Haley, dressed in the “Blush” gown from designer Haley Paige, walked to her groom as her sister played cello and her mother’s husband played violin. When the new Mr. & Mrs. Deal were announced, the pianist played “Jump” by Van Halen, preparing the crowd for the fun they were to have as the cocktail hour approached. Amelia Island Trolley and Amelia Island Transportation delivered the 150 guests to Walker’s Landing, which overflowed with orchids, the couple’s monogram in gold, photos of Haley and Brian, and music by The Bay Kings Band. Guests were offered the bride’s pink lemonade vodka served from pink bottles or the groom’s signature bourbon and ginger from green bottles. “Our family loves dining at Brett’s Waterway Café,” says Brian, “so Brett Carter was the natural choice to assist with our reception planning and catering. Brett shared his recipe for chess squares with my mom years ago, and they’ve always been my favorite. We opted to serve those in lieu of wedding cake!” A special moment for the couple was their last dance. “The guests were outside waiting for our departure, and the band sang one last song just for us. It was a few minutes to reflect on the amazing day and all the love our friends and family showed,” Haley reminisces. As they departed, guests shook blue and gold Gator-style basketball pom-poms, rooting for a long life of blessings for the Deals. Haley and Brian retired to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island for the weekend, before embarking on a honeymoon in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Today, the couple lives happily in New York, where Haley is a fundraiser for the Michael J. Fox Foundation and enjoys CrossFit exercise with Brian. And, of course, the duo still gathers to cheer on those Gators! AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

Seaside Amelia Inn By Karen Miller

Seaside Amelia Inn is one of Amelia Island’s favorite affordable boutique hotels, conveniently located steps from the beach via a private boardwalk, and it’s perfect for a beach wedding. Olivia Hoblit, the Inn’s general manager, confirms that the Inn has become extremely popular with couples looking to hold their wedding ceremony on the beach, and then stay at Seaside Amelia with their friends and family. “We have everything in this one, well-situated location,” says Hoblit. “Many couples like to hold their receptions at local venues or restaurants, and spend the weekend at the Inn, which features beautiful views, a full breakfast, parking, wi-fi, a pool, and of course, the beach. And our staff is absolutely amazing. We pride ourselves on our customer service!” 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Seaside Amelia Inn features 46 suites and studios, completely furnished in a comfortable, coastal style. Each room is uniquely designed, featuring a private balcony overlooking the ocean, the pool, or with a sunset view. A “Turtles Cove” activity corner and rooftop sun deck allow wedding guests the opportunity to meet and mingle throughout their stay. The Inn also provides free umbrellas and beach chairs, and a “Grab-n-Go” sundries center. “One of the things that our guests love about Seaside Amelia Inn is our daily Southern home-style breakfast, served every day from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.,” says Hoblit. “We have a real chef who creates made-to-order pancakes, eggs, grits, and sausage. We also offer pastries, bagels, yogurt, fresh fruit, juice, coffee, and hot and cold cereals—something for everyone!”
Hoblit suggests that wedding guests enjoy a cocktail or two on the Inn’s rooftop sun deck. “It’s the perfect intimate venue for a small group, and the views of the ocean are spectacular,” says Hoblit. “Guests are welcome to bring their own wine and hors d’oeuvres if they wish. We also have a third floor oceanfront suite, which is a nice honeymoon abode for a newly married couple.” Seaside Amelia Inn is located next to Main Beach Park, offering guests two sand volleyball courts, a playground, several picnic shelters, restroom facilities, outdoor showers, a multipurpose court, and a skate park. It is also conveniently close to historic downtown Fernandina Beach, with its boutique shopping, upscale spas, and a host of fine dining options. Fort Clinch State Park is only a few steps from the hotel as well. Its 1,100 acres include the 19th-century fort, a half-mile fishing pier, stunning sand dunes, plains, maritime hammock, and estuarine tidal marsh.
Other popular Amelia Island activities include golfing, kayaking, boating, tennis, biking, bird-watching, horseback riding, and nature photography. Egans Creek Greenway, a short walk from Seaside Amelia Inn, is the perfect place for a hike, a well-maintained nature trail where you may spot an otter, alligator, or even a bald eagle. “Seaside Amelia Inn is right next to Sandy Bottoms Beach Bar & Grill, with oceanfront dining right on the beach,” says Hoblit. “Guests can enjoy their wide array of popular island eats and treats, while listening to live music daily. Some of our guests have held their wedding receptions at Sandy Bottoms. And when the hour is getting late, your hotel room is right here, no driving necessary!” For more information about Seaside Amelia Inn, call (904) 206-5242 or visit www.seasideameliainn.com. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 29
engagement rings 101 By Brett Whitaker Few events in life are more significant than the marriage proposal. After much soul-searching about the decision itself, numerous hours are often spent by the groom-to-be planning the when, where, and how of “popping the question”. For most couples, this life-changing event will involve an engagement ring. While many young women have an idea of what style of ring they prefer, guys can be overwhelmed with the multitude of choices and wide range of prices. Many couples today do some preliminary shopping together, although some courageous men still choose the excitement and anxiety of attempting to pull off a complete surprise! Regardless of the process, this is a purchase that is rarely entered into lightly. As one who has been in your shoes but has also spent countless hours on the other side of the showcase, allow me to offer a few suggestions to help you through the purchase process. First of all, establish a budget. While it is tempting to go into debt via the easy-payment-plans available today, couples beginning a new life together will have enough financial challenges without adding jewelry to the list. An engagement ring is a significant 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
purchase, and one worth planning and saving for. If you are not in a position to afford the ring of her dreams, keep in mind that the center diamond constitutes the majority of the ring value. Consider purchasing the ring style she wants with a smaller center stone to stay within your budget. Ask the store about their trade-up policy to buy a larger diamond for a future anniversary. Next, consider where to shop. Be cautious about buying online for a number of reasons. Diamonds are fascinating creations of God, and like snowflakes, no two are alike. Diamond grading is subjective, and the location and nature of inclusions (flaws), along with the cut of a stone, can have a huge impact on overall beauty. Work with someone who has the ability to show you multiple diamonds within your price range, grade the diamonds accurately, and explain the particulars of what you are seeing. Ask around to find a store that is well established in your community and has earned a reputation for honesty and integrity. And don’t be fooled by deceptive marketing. “Direct from the cutters” may sound good, but every diamond must go through numerous steps to travel from under the ground to the showroom, and costs are associated with each step, regardless of who does it. It is prudent to shop and compare, but be sure you are comparing apples to apples, which is especially difficult with a product as unique and complex as diamonds. Finally, remember that knowledge and experience matters. Look for credentials as an indicator of how committed your prospective jeweler is to his or her craft. The two most reputable educational institutions in the jewelry industry are the American Gem Society (AGS) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). GIA created the diamond grading system used within the industry, and a GIA graduate has made a significant investment of time and money to become an expert in the field of diamond grading. AGS promotes high ethical and business practices and its members are evaluated annually to ensure they adhere to these standards. Less than five percent of jewelry stores nationally have met the requirements necessary for AGS membership. Hopefully, you will find these suggestions helpful as you maneuver through the exciting and challenging quest for that “perfect” ring. Happy hunting! Pronovias oɈers a mermaid-style beige tulle dress with lace appliques, thread embroidery, and fringes. The sheer halter neck and back with rebrode lace appliques will catch every eye. The gown is Änished with a skirt that includes more fringe appliques, but perhaps the best feature is the interesting veil presentation.
Gold is emerging in all wedding fashion and decor for 2016. Monique Lhuillier’s Langham Gown falls right into this hot spot, leveraging rose gold embellished tulle for a skirt that sprays behind the gown, illustrating the airy sensation that is so popular this season. The scoop neckline makes way for beautiful sheer long sleeve, making this gown suitable for any season.
white is back After recent experiments with reds, blues, and blacks, designers this season are working in white again, with flowers, tulle, feathers, and airy fabrics. By Julie Simmons Pop quiz: can identify this quote? “I’ll meet you at the altar; I’ll be the one in white!” While you think about your guess, let’s take a peek at wedding gown trends for this year—and white is one of them! After the recent departure from the long-standing tradition of white bridal gowns, white is back again, with experiments in pink, blue, red, and black taking a back seat. Replacing that colorful palate are this season’s new shapes and a bit of whimsy with 3-D flowers, tulle, feathers, and airy fabrics, all in white! For spring, flowers are everywhere, even in printed fabric. Previews of the fall line begin to move the floral trend to a new place, with 3-D embellishments both large and small as shoulder accents, on the sleeve, covering the entire skirt, or perhaps just the bosom on the bodice. Angel Sanchez presents some of the most 32 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
daring and unique offerings, including flowers on skirts or in pink across the back. Lela Rose also offers several fantastic floral dresses which provide unique variations on the traditional gown silhouettes. Some observers see airy gowns as one of the top trends of 2016. The airy look is created through light fabrics and lots of tulle and organza, as seen in Houghton’s and Monique Lhuillier’s lines. Sometimes the airy look emerges through a lack of fabric, which introduces the Angelina Jolie-style revealing leg slits, which Lhuillier is also promoting this year. Airy can also fly with “feathers” again this season, with Vera Wang using them on sleeves and other designers, including Lhuillier and Naeem Khan, fluttering them all over the gown. Last season’s Victorian influences, such as high necklines, sleeves, and hair pieces, are here to stay, and expanding. Hair

Lela Rose’s “The Dusk” is a favorite gown this season if you’re looking for something unique! The one-shoulder sheath with a sweetheart bustier and feather skirt is simple yet absolutely stunning in detail. And it’s in white, which is everywhere for the 2016 wedding season.
Monique Lhuillier is at it again with her Fairy silk white and champagne illusion embroideried bodice sheath gown with a Åowing chiɈon skirt. So classy with its Åoral appliques across the chest and into a one-shoulder sleeve. The Änale is the slit leg, oɈering a classic but very sexy presentation.
Pronovia’s Princia is another mermaid-style gown with a sweetheart neckline in beige tulle with lace and guipure appliques. The open back of this gown is stunning, as are the Åoral appliques and dramatic veil, which fall right in line with the trends for this season. Don’t miss the gorgeous chapel-length train, Änished with Åoral appliques. Absolutely beautiful!

jewelry in a sparkly, jeweled exhibition is new in Anne Barge’s, Hayley Paige’s, and Marchesa’s lines. Sleeves are all over the runways, often off-the-shoulder, especially in Rose’s and Barge’s look books. The cap sleeve also continues this season, and lace sleeves are still very prominent. My favorite sleeve is the 1970’s bell-style, which is making a comeback in long, short, or threequarter lengths. Reappearing with bell sleeves is retro fringe on the sleeves, bodice, or the way I fancy, on the scoop of an open back in Theia Couture’s line. The cape that emerged last year is back on the stage, but in a more dramatic presentation, like a superhero, as illustrated in the Pronovias line. Less dramatic but with a similar style is the body veil, which is a bit like a cape, with veil placement at the shoulder or back. Samples of this look can be found in Claire Pettibone and Ines Di Santo’s fall lines. For the bottom half of the bodice, detachable skirts remain popular, with a short bodice covered by a longer skirt that can be removed for the reception. Piggy-backing with the thigh-high slits are asymmetrical hem lines on the skirt, featuring a shorter front and a longer back of the gown that promotes fabric movement. Barge, Lhuillier, and Wang experimented with this design for 2016. And finally, a drumroll please! The answer is: “I’ll meet you at the altar; I’ll be the one in white!” is from Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. Brides, may your gown shopping be a truly romantic experience, and may you glow in white on your wedding day and in happiness in your marriage. Congratulations!

HERE COME THE
bride’s responsibilities By Julie Simmons Recently I heard a quote that went like this: “A good marriage is like a casserole, only those responsible for it really know what goes in it.” It made me realize that to be a successful bride, the same idea applies—it’s a casserole, and you are the chef responsible for the flavor! As a bride, your first responsibility is the wedding ceremony that joins you and your husband. But saying, ‘I do” also comes with a large to-do-list that includes bridesmaids, a luncheon, thank-you gifts, and your own etiquette. I want to share a few secret spices you can add to your planning to get the perfect blend. First, before you do anything, consider a wedding planner. “A good wedding planner will listen to you,” says Robyn Branch of Robyn Branch Design. The wedding planner approaches your day unemotionally and helps you to make good choices. Additionally, don’t feel like you have to break the mold on every detail. “ Every bride wants her day to be unique, but 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
wedding traditions become traditions for a reason!” adds Robyn. As you plan your day, don’t forget your parents, especially if they are financing the event. Yes, you are the bride and the day is about you, but remember that many times it’s your parents’ party, too. “It’s their chance to send you into the world with proper fanfare,” says Robyn. Next, you have to choose bridesmaids. Take your time and choose wisely. Many experts suggest one bridesmaid and groomsman for every fifty guests. This is a formula, not a rule, but the size of your wedding often dictates the size of your bridal party. Besides, more isn’t always better. The more girls, the greater the logistics of dresses, party, and shower selections! Plus, you want to be sure your maid or matron of honor isn’t just your BFF, but that she’s reliable, since she’ll have almost as many to-dos as you. Lastly, it’s okay to have uneven numbers of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Another reason to keep your wedding party small is because proper thank-yous, usually in the form of gifts, are required for each bridesmaid and groomsman. It’s up to you to purchase those. “Lately, we’ve helped brides with jewelry items and Swell Bottles for bridesmaid gifts, and Yeti cups and IceMule coolers for the groomsmen,” shares Jennie Stephens of Red Otter Outfitters. Other fun ideas include monogrammed robes, bags, wine glasses, or my favorite, post-wedding spa appointments. A special thank you for bridesmaids is often a special luncheon—just for the girls—for the bride to express her gratitude. Amelia Island offers many venues to make this occasion intimate. “Our team finds great satisfaction welcoming friends and family to Bar Zin,” says Tim Seyda, owner of the popular wedding venue. “Whether it’s a bridal luncheon or wedding rehearsal dinner, we realize we will forever be part of your wedding memories and work hard to meet all the bride’s expectations.” Finally, brides, you have a few notes on etiquette. “Never keep your guests waiting,” stresses Robyn, “for anything!” Think about how you can stage your event order and photographs so that invitees are not idle. “Brides must be mindful of the guests’ comfort. People are there because they love you and want to support you. Take time to show thankfulness.” And there you have it, a secret recipe for the perfect wedding. Wishing you all the best!

wedding Æowers & décor By Julie Simmons Brides, I have exciting news on the wedding floral and décor front for 2016! From dramatic versions of everything that’s been hot for the past two years all the way to red-hot piñatas, these exciting new trends are sure to pump up your wedding celebration. To begin with, when you meet with your florist, bring a selfie! “One of the first things we ask a bride is for a photo of her gown, preferably of her wearing it,” explains Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, CFD, FSMD, owner of Artistic Florist. “We want her floral choices to match her—and her gown,” smiles Brooke. Why is this important? One very important reason is that some styles of bouquet won’t pair well with the style of gown you’ve chosen. For instance, if 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
you’re not blessed with long legs, a cascade bouquet might dangle to your ankles. And, of course, some floral colors may not match your skin tone. Speaking of colors, Pantone Inc. recently announced its 2016 color, and for the first time, there are two colors: Rose Quartz and Serenity. “Rose Quartz continues the warm blush palate we’ve seen in recent seasons, but when presented beside the cool, tranquil blue Serentiy, you achieve a very mature, romantic feeling,” says Brooke. These colors will be seen on many wedding aisle throughout the year, paired with the cascade bouquets that emerged at the end of last year. “Cascades are here full-force,” confirms Brooke. “The bouquet may embrace it in shape or with elements, like with a trickle of berry, multiple ribbons, or ribbon trails.” Expect ribbon cascades to fall from accent lanterns, aisle markers, and all reception décor to create movement and fluidity. Another fun trend for 2016 is the use of “garden” characteristics. For example, bouquets are using herbs or a romantic garden theme, like newlyweds Chasta and Brett Moore recently chose. (Their wedding is featured in this issue.) Brides are adding fresh products like chamomile with wild blossoms like fresh lavender or other lilac, gray, and cream-colored blossoms to create a stunning display. The herbal elements also add a distinctive scent to your celebration. Similarly, Brooke explains that many new trends are developing not only with the flowers, but also with the foliage. “Brides are requesting variety in their foliage and looking for a light and airy organic feel, which we accomplish with greens like mint or even olive.” For the fans of baby’s breath, burlap, and mason jars, this taste is filing for retirement benefits. In its place, Brooke recommends gold and linens this season. “Brides are increasing their linen budgets and using gold chargers, napkin décor, chair ties, or even leased furniture to make a large space feel warm” she reveals. “Multiple metallic, like golds, silvers, pewter, and copper, are here and are being paired.” Unique for 2016—and my favorite—are wedding piñatas, custom paper-mache piñatas designed for the wedding and filled with celebration. Imagine your married monogram on a piñata filled with lottery tickets, small liquor bottles, or personalized chocolates, with cascading Rose Quartz and Serenity ribbons to release the treasure. It’s sure to be a hit! (Pun intended!) Congratulations to all brides-to-be! We wish you all the best on your special day!

By Karen Miller Amelia Island’s beautiful ocean beaches and quaint appeal beckon honeymooning couples to reconnect with the things that matter most in life. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday living, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, Amelia Island’s beauty is sure to inspire romance. Book a honeymoon on Amelia Island and your heart will be touched with a real sense of hospitality and warmth, coupled with a wide range of amenities that will create a perfect honeymoon experience. There’s a lot of work that goes into wedding planning, and by the time the vows are recited, the bridal cake cut, and the last guest strolls back to their room, the newly married couple is eager to spend time alone. Amelia Island abounds in upscale bed and breakfasts, world-class resorts and hotels, exclusive restaurants, and championship golf courses. There is much to do and see around the island, and lots of quiet time for newly married couples to spend together before setting out on their new lives as husband and wife. For couples who love the outdoors, Amelia Island has golfing, tennis, kayaking, surfing, fishing, beachcombing, biking trails, and horseback riding. 42 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
If relaxation is your preference, there are numerous places to enjoy spa treatments, fine dining, music, theatre, and art galleries. Whether lounging on the beach, luxuriating in a beautiful resort, or enjoying a gourmet meal together, sunny Amelia Island will help you celebrate your romantic union in style. In the center of Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed and breakfast inns in the country. Recently named the number one property in Conde Nast’s 2012 Gold List, the inn boasts striking Italianate architecture, along with rooms that are charming and comfortable, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton provides wine and chocolate-covered strawberries upon your arrival, as well as spa robes, upscale amenities, and free WiFi in the rooms. “We cater to romance,” says Hamilton. “We are all about quiet, romantic getaways, and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens and all rooms have coffee makers. A two-course breakfast, complimentary use of bikes, a pool and beach equipment, along with evening beverages and hors d’oeuvres, round out the carefree pampering that couples will remember for a lifetime. Equally charming is The Amelia Island Williams House, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on a quiet street close to the town center. This award-winning inn features charming spacious guest rooms with working fireplaces, baths with whirlpool tubs for two, elegant bedding, and all of the amenities you need for an atmosphere for romance and relaxation. Their honeymoon packages feature chocolate-dipped strawberries, dinners for two, and romantic horse-drawn carriage rides through the quaint seaside town. A three course gourmet breakfast is served each morning in the dining room, plus complimentary beverages
and snacks are available all day, as well as bikes, beach towels, and guest chairs for relaxing on the beach. Innkeepers Byron and Deborah McCutchen invite you to sit on their wide verandahs underneath live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss while you “wine” down the day, and enjoy views of their serene gardens, fountains, and koi pond. Located just steps from the Atlantic Ocean is the Amelia Hotel at the Beach. This locally owned and operated hotel is convenient to area attractions, dining and shopping. “Our hotel offers spacious guest rooms with a location designed to leave guests with great memories at affordable prices,” says Holly Germano, General Manager. “Guests love the comfortable rooms with abundant amenities, Hot & Healthy Breakfast, as well as our evening refreshments—and our Lobby Lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a night cap.” Amelia Island is also a great jumping off place for other destinations. The Travel Agency, a local, full-service travel source, offers a network of contacts and experienced and well-traveled agents who can provide honeymoon packages with VIP status worldwide. Honeymooning couples are known to return again and again to Amelia Island, to recreate their special day. It’s an extraordinary place where new lives begin, and memories are made to last a lifetime.
