ABOUT

A M ELI A ISL A N D

There are moments in life that stay with you. Where you embrace what really matters. That is what Amelia Island is all about.

Moments This Special, You Know By Heart. Amelia Island. Those two words evoke many fond memories for those who have been lucky enough to experience this magical place. Special travel memories mean different things to each traveler and that is certainly true on Amelia Island. Long known as an unspoiled barrier island getaway, this enchanted place just keeps getting better with age. And Amelia Island is still making memories for new and veteran visitors – including those young in age and young at heart. Amelia Island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. Just two miles wide and 13 miles long, the island features wide beaches, the state’s oldest lighthouse, towering sand dunes preserved to offer protected foliage and fauna, and a charming waterfront town that is an island hub. These diverse features provide the perfect setting for a wide range of accommodations, restaurants, and an array of activities to match any – and many – interests.

From the rhythm of its tides to the patter of its historic brick streets, Amelia Island is filled with all that makes great times together.

With park preserves at both tips of the island and award-winning planned developments in between, it’s only natural that Amelia Island has remained popular with visitors for decades. Today, multi-generational trips bring mothers, fathers, and AMELIAISLAND.COM

grandparents who introduce the pleasurable pursuits of “their” Amelia Island to the young – creating new memories for all to share. And Mother Nature, the mother to all, gives everyone a new appreciation of Amelia Island.

Amelia Island’s historical success as a vacation destination was preceded by centuries of interesting history. Much of this fascinating past can be explored at the can’t-miss Amelia Island Museum of History – the state’s first spokenhistory museum – where docents take visitors back in time to explore four centuries of island events and people. Who knew that Amelia Island is the only piece of land in the entire United States that has actually been under the rule of eight different flags? Or, that pirates once roamed off Amelia Island shores? And that Amelia Island’s historic American Beach was once a unique resort getaway for African Americans? Fort Clinch State Park, featuring a well preserved 19th century fort, also focuses on history – and nature, thanks to six miles of trails for hiking and biking.

Unique among Florida’s many outstanding treasures, Amelia Island is an enchanting showcase of all that makes Florida great.

With two feet and two wheels popular throughout the island, you can visit Egan’s Creek Greenway, which opened in 2001. Of course, beachcombing is always a popular pursuit on two bare feet, with lots of shells and even a few shark teeth, the goal of beachcombers. Endangered sea turtles also like Amelia Island’s beaches and return year after year to lay their eggs on the island’s shores in protected nesting areas. 8

Historic downtown Fernandina Beach is a popular alternative to sand and saltwater. Centre Street and other quaint side streets feature unique Victorian homes and one-of-a-kind shops, eateries, and places to stay. A tour by foot or horse-drawn carriage provides the perfect introduction to this friendly town that could only be found on Amelia Island.

AMELIAISLAND.COM

Fort George Island (including a 4.4-mile hiking trail), historic Cumberland Island, and Little Talbot Island and Big Talbot Island (both state parks) all await with their own natural charms. The islands hold something for everyone. From a simple morning stroll on the beach or down a shady trail to enjoying a sunset sail, the region beckons with possibilities of things to see and do from morning to night.

It’s only natural that Amelia Island draws anyone who loves nature with eco-based exploration including kayak tours, whale-watching, fishing, biking, and much more. World-class inland and ocean fishing draw anglers from near and far. Anytime of year is the right time of year to go after “the big one.” Back on land, greens are almost as plentiful as fish. Championship golf is a long-time hole-in-one on the 10

island, including oceanfront holes, marshview greens, and a challenging blend of great golf architecture. It’s obviously easy to play on Amelia Island, but it’s also easy to stay. With more than 20 unique accommodation options, you can stay right on the Atlantic, under a canopy of ancient trees, or within Fernandina Beach’s historic district. Whatever the location and whatever the style, it is sure to be a memorable stay.

When it comes to dining, the island’s menu of restaurants is extensive. Whether it’s fresh Florida seafood at the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry or dining with an international flavor, you won’t go hungry during this getaway.

Fernandina Beach, voted "Best Small Town Getaway" by Southern Living magazine, is the incorporated city on Amelia Island.

Another thing you won’t hunger for is the arts. An eclectic mix of galleries and shops dot Fernandina Beach. Both along Centre Street and in specialty shops throughout the island, art is an important element. The once monthly evening-long “Second Saturdays Artrageous Artwalk” provides a perfect way to find an art-inspired Amelia Island memory. Whatever your pleasures, many treasured moments await you here on Amelia Island. AMELIAISLAND.COM

Landscapes. Seascapes. One Fine Escape. Thanks to decades of forwardthinking and award-winning preservation efforts, Amelia Island remains a place where many memories come… naturally. With a setting that includes preserved and peaceful maritime forests and marshes, wide whitesand beaches, and surrounded by water, it is only natural that Amelia Island’s outdoor assets remain a big draw for both firsttime and veteran visitors who love Mother Nature. Amelia Island’s natural beauty can be enjoyed with something as simple as a walk on the beach, where the ever-changing tides make every stroll something unique and special. Finding that perfect shell – like scallops, moon snails, and whelks – is as easy as that low-tide walk on the beach. Florida’s beaches are also strewn with remnants of prehistoric fossils, including shark teeth. Searching for this elusive bicuspid has become a favorite pastime for tourists and residents alike. Sizes range from less than half inch to over six inches and are typically found at the water’s edge. Searching can be competitive so try and remember that it’s just a relaxing stroll on the beach! The beach also harbors numerous turtle nests near the dunes at certain times of year. Florida’s AMELIAISLAND.COM

Natural Appalachian quartz sand and dunes as high as 40 feet characterize Amelia Island’s unforgettable shoreline.

beaches are home to about 90% of all nesting sea turtles in the United States. The Amelia Island area is particularly welcoming to the 300-pound-plus female loggerhead and green turtles who lay their eggs on the beach to be hatched 55-60 days later. Locals have taken extraordinary steps to protect the nests and the hatchlings. Amelia has as much to discover inland and some of the discoveries move a bit faster than turtles. Animal spottings might include whitetail deer, bobcats, alligators, and even armadillos. Plant lovers COME MAKE MEMORIES

will find an abundance of live oaks, sea oats, pretty prickly pear, sea lavender, and much more.

UNFORGETTABLE BIRD WATCHING Whether you’re a casual bird watcher or a professional, you’ll enjoy spotting Amelia Island’s diverse species. Roseate spoonbills, barred owls, bald eagles, hawks, and even the more common varieties offer glorious viewing. Visit local nature centers or strike out on your own to see Amelia’s feathered friends.

Thanks to five area state parks and a stunning national seashore just across the river, Amelia Island’s natural treasures have been preserved for everyone to enjoy. The parks offer possibilities like hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, interpretive programs, and so much more. Historic Fort Clinch State Park, at the northern end of Amelia Island, is a great place to start communing with nature. Where cannons once fired, silence now remains, thanks to the early work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, which helped open the fort to the public in 1938. Shelling, fishing, nature and history programs, picnicking, hiking, and birdwatching are among the many options. Egan’s Creek Greenway consists of more than 300 acres of protected sensitive 14

lands along Egan’s Creek between Atlantic Avenue and Sadler Road. The two-mile Blue Heron Loop starts behind the Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center and runs between Atlantic Avenue and Sadler Road, while the 1.4-mile Red Maple Trail lies south of Jasmine Street. Early-morning and evening hikers can be rewarded with wildlife sightings that can include egrets, herons, raccoons, marsh rabbits, and maybe even a hawk or bobcat. Located at the southern end of Amelia Island, Amelia Island State Park features more than 200 acres of protected wilderness. Pristine beaches, marshes, and maritime forests await you. Fishing, beachcombing, and more add to the draw of this state park. Located off the southern tip of the island across a modern bridge is Little Talbot Island State Park. It features five miles of beautiful beaches and dunes, quiet marshes and estuaries, dense forests, and an abundance of wildlife. Fishing, hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, and camping are popular here. Be sure to look for (and respect) sea turtle nests each summer.

Amelia Island is one of the few places in the United States where you can enjoy a horseback ride along the beach.

Natural Wonders AMELIA ISLAND GARDEN SHOW Visit for this March event and enjoy nature’s brightest colors for two days in Central Park. www.AmeliaGarden.com WILD AMELIA NATURE FESTIVAL In May, come explore Amelia’s pristine nature with special tours, work-shops and more. www.WildAmelia.com

Even closer, nearby Big Talbot Island State Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Except for a boat ramp, picnicking facilities, and five maintained hiking trails much of Big Talbot Island is like the Timucuan Indians must have known it. Big Talbot Island also offers fishing, birdwatching, paddling, and biking.

Marina, on the St. John’s River, is the typical put-in for paddling this pretty section of the state’s waterlogged trail. Those visitors without their own canoes or kayaks will find plenty of rental opportunities, as well as a wide variety of rental boat and charter boat options for exploration out on the water.

A few more miles south is Fort George Island State Park, an area which attracted early cultures with abundant marshes and waters, while more recent visitors are drawn by abundant flora and fauna. A 4.4-mile loop nature trail is well worth the effort. Fishing, history, birdwatching, hiking, biking, paddling, and more can be pursued naturally.

Though it’s across the state line in Georgia, you may want to venture to the Cumberland Island National Seashore. Reachable only by boat, Cumberland Island was once the realm of the Carnegie family. Now a national treasure, it is the home of wild horses among other wildlife. Cumberland Island features 17 miles of beaches, historic ruins and buildings, hiking, biking, camping, fishing, birdwatching, and all of the natural activities Amelia Island visitors have grown to love.

Paddlers also will love learning that Fort Clinch State Park marks the eastern end of the 1,550mile Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail. The trail passes by all five of the area’s pristine state parks. Sister’s Creek AMELIAISLAND.COM

Of course, every Amelia Island season has its natural assets. Spring generally means warming temperatures and spring showers that bring – you guessed it – spring flowers. Summer brings perfect swimming weather and stunning sunrises and sunsets. Fall means crisp evenings and even some fall colors in the

marshes. Winter remains an Amelia Island secret to some – but not for long – thanks to a temperate northeast Florida climate that attracts more birds (and visitors in-the-know) than ever. No matter the season, Amelia Island’s pristine nature offers beauty and adventure you won’t soon forget.

Island Treasures A fun beach activity on Amelia Island is hunting for shark teeth. Here’s a look at what you may find. GREAT WHITE SHARK

GREAT WHITE SHARK From the mackerel shark family. The extant white shark has been recorded up to 36 feet in length. The huge and heavy teeth of the fossil C megalodon have serrations on both edges and are triangular in shape. SAND SHARK This species’ teeth are sometimes mistaken for those of the extant porbeagle shark that is a member of the Lamnidae (mackerel sharks) family. The teeth have a broad tripod like bases. The porbeagle shark does not. HAMMERHEAD SHARK The hammerhead sharks are late developments, possibly from carcharhinid stock. Sphyrna mokarran is the only hammerhead shark with serrated teeth.

SAND SHARK

HAMMERHEAD SHARK

LEMON SHARK Teeth of this species of sharks are distinguished by the combination of a long smooth-edged crown and a “wavery” edged base in the upper teeth.

BULL SHARK The bull shark is the only shark frequently living in fresh water. It also is common in shallow marine situations such as bays and river mouths.

& CULTURE Amelia Island has been a haven for Scottish smugglers, Mexican pirates, Cuban freedom fighters and anyone ready to explore an amazing history.

HISTORY BUFFS’ TO-DO LIST Discover Amelia Island’s fascinating history with a walking tour of downtown and the historic district or visit any of these historic gems: Amelia Island Museum of History, ghost tours, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and cemetery, historical American Beach and Fort Clinch.

4,000 Years. Eight Flags. One Fascinating History. It’s easy to dig deep into Amelia Island’s past thanks to a treasure trove of history, heritage, and attractions. With 400+ years of recorded history under eight flags, this island is an especially historical place that, “The French visited, the Spanish developed, the English named, and the Americans tamed.” And did we mention pirates? Records show that Frenchman Jean Ribault visited in 1562, but that Timucuan Indians were already living on the island. Many more people – and flags – would follow. The eight flags flown over the island included those from: France; Spain (many periods); England; the Patriots of Amelia Island (yes, they had their own flag); the Green Cross (raised by a self-proclaimed ruler); Mexico (the Mexican Rebel flag); the Confederate States of America, and the United States (from 1821 to present, with the exception of about a year during the Civil War when the Confederate flag flew over the island). To learn more, a fascinating onehour “Eight Flags Tour” is held twice a day at the Amelia Island Museum of History. Included free with admission to the museum, the tour provides an in-depth and insider’s view of the museum’s popular Eight Flags Gallery. AMELIAISLAND.COM

Of course, the Amelia Island Museum of History is a great place to start any exploration of the island’s intriguing history. It’s situated in the heart of town in Nassau County’s historic jail, showcasing more than 4,000 years of natural and human history with historic artifacts plus an array of displays and photography that highlight the area’s history. MUST SEE: AMELIA ISLAND MUSEUM OF HISTORY The Museum is housed in the former county jail, and showcases more than 4,000 years of history. Featured exhibits include significance of the Timucuan Indians to Amelia Island and Fernandina as the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry. www.AmeliaMuseum.org

The Museum Shoppe often is the last stop on a museum tour, providing books about the area and unique gifts and souvenirs found only here. The shop provides yet another way to take home an Amelia Island memory. The Amelia Island Museum of History also hosts other popular tours. Their “Pub Crawl” takes those 20

thirsty for history and more to four downtown pubs (participants must be 21 or older and bring an ID). On Fridays, the “Ghost Tour” features Amelia Island history mixed with a few ghost stories based on strangerthan-fiction events. In addition, the museum offers tours of Fernandina Beach’s historic private homes. If you want to dig even deeper into the area’s past, ask about the museum’s

research library and extensive archives, including information about Fernandina Beach’s original “Old Town,” which was platted in 1811 and has the distinction of being the last Spanish city platted in the Western Hemisphere. The 200th anniversary of this historic event was celebrated in 2011. Walking in and around historic Fernandina Beach is perhaps one of the best ways to explore the island’s history. Many of the buildings are on the National Register (as is the entire 50-block Historic District) and several historic homes now operate as bed-and-breakfast inns. 1882 Huot Building 101 North 2nd Street: Standard Marine Supply Company started supporting the shrimping industry from this building as early as 1900. Before these historic buildings lined the streets of Fernandina Beach, pirates roamed the town and Amelia Island. The likes of Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Pierre and Jean LaFitte, Calico Jack Rackham, Stede Bonnett, and others called on the relatively safe haven of Fernandina Harbor at some point. Pirate use of the island came to a head in 1817 when Frenchman Luis-Michel Aury took control of Fernandina Harbor. It took U.S. forces more than three months to capture Aury, who is said to have left behind buried treasure. It’s never been found, but Aury’s ghost still haunts 3rd Street.

As the area became more popular with boats and ships, the Amelia Island Lighthouse was first lit in 1839 using materials from the former Cumberland Island Lighthouse. A new lantern in 1881 brought it to a height of 64 feet and it remains the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in Florida. The city of Fernandina Beach offers tours of the lighthouse the first and third Wednesday of every month.

24

Island’s shrimpers moved to offshore shrimping to catch more shrimp. They switched from cast nets, haul seines, and bar nets to the modern “otter” trawl, and they progressed from row and sail power to motors, the docks of Fernandina Beach reflected these changes.

The island saw military action several times, including the Civil War and the Spanish American War. Historic Fort Clinch is named for the Seminole War’s General Duncan Lamont Clinch and it was visited by Robert E. Lee when he inspected the fortifications. The well preserved fort is now a quiet haven for history.

After the Civil War and well into the 20th century, African Americans still didn’t have access to many of the nation’s public facilities, including most public beaches. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Jacksonville-based Afro-American Life Insurance Company worked to resolve this situation locally. It procured land to start a resort community on Amelia Island called American Beach. Several historic homes built then remain in the original families today.

Economic prosperity returned slowly to the region after the Civil War and shrimping was a saving grace for Amelia Island. The turn of the 20th century brought innovations to the shrimping industry. Amelia

Amelia Island is still making history today – and memories – thanks to continued preservation efforts of the island’s historical and natural assets. The island is living history at its best.

Winding along a coastal Atlantic dune ridge, Ocean Links provides golfers with five oceanfront holes, where fairways and greens parallel Amelia’s beach and meander through a unique coastal maritime hammock. Named by Golf for Women as one of the 50 Best Courses for Women, its close proximity to the ocean and the ever-changing sea breeze provide the golfer with exhilarating views and intriguing play. Lagoons, marsh wetlands, and natural sand dunes on a seaside terrain offer golfers a nature tour as much as a round of golf.

NORTH/WEST COURSE STATISTICS FERNANDINA BEACH GOLF CLUB 2800 Bill Melton Rd Fernandina Beach, Florida 32034 800-646-5997 • 904-277-7370 www.FernandinaBeachGolfClub.com The 27 holes of golf, and proximity to Jacksonville and the beach make Fernandina Beach Golf Club one of the most popular municipal golf facilities in the country. The sub-tropical climate and warm Florida sun make the impeccable greens that much more enjoyable and enticing. With just the right amount of challenge, each course – north, south and west – offers the beauty of moss-draped live oaks and swaying palms – all part of the best of Amelia Island. Each golfer still will find a challenge around each bend, bunkers tucked into the terrain, and water hazards placed to encourage good golf play.

Completed in 1987, Tom Fazio’s award-winning design challenges golfers with natural hazards, tight fairways and elevated greens. It has been named one of the Top 50 Courses in Florida by Golfweek magazine and one of the Best Places to Play by Golf Digest. The rolling fairways wind through marshes, a thick oak and pine forest, and scenic oceanfront dunes. Long Point’s character is shaped by natural waste bunkers, large undulating greens and distinctive back-to-back oceanfront Par 3s. Several holes leave the casual observer with breathtaking views of the Amelia River and expansive salt marshes.

FISHING

& NAT U R E From the peaceful backwater to the deep blue sea, you’ll discover plenty of angling excitement on Amelia Island.

GONE FISHING Fishing takes many forms on Amelia. Find your way to the George Crady Bridge on the south end for great catches. Maybe grab a rod-and-reel and fish from the beach in the surf. Or find one of our great captains for a charter fishing trip among the backwaters or out into the deeps of the ocean.

Fish Tales Here Need Little Embellishment. Memorable fishing stories are told on Amelia Island and lots of them are about the big fish that didn’t get away. “Amelia Island offers a wide variety of angling opportunities for both family fishing fun and the hard core,” says Terry Lacoss, long-time owner and operator of the Amelia Angler.

and productive bass fishing. Various bridges, jetties, oyster beds, and more create “secret” spots where having a guide is the key to catching fish. Flyfishing the backwaters is also growing in popularity and Amelia Island is a great place to take an introductory lesson and outing.

Lacoss adds that anglers don’t have to go far on or around Amelia Island for some world-class fishing. Many brackish lagoons feature snook, redfish, and possibly some large and feisty tarpon. Walker’s Creek is a popular place, thanks to sea trout, redfish, and other saltwater fish that have made their way a bit inland. The waters of the St. Mary’s and Nassau Rivers, as well as creeks like Lofton and Boggy, make for convenient

Surfcasting possibilities include the fun of fighting bluefish, redfish, sea trout and lots more. Year-round action also promises advantages and fish specific to each new season. Even bigger fish can be found just offshore. Charter boats and experienced guides make it easy to catch huge black drum, redfish, tarpon, shark, amberjack, snapper and much more.
