AMELIA MORRISON

I started the Interior Design program at BCIT in the spring of 2011 after realizing I needed a change in career; one that was perhaps more challenging, more thought-provoking, and yet tested the boundaries of form, function and idealistic expression. A career that answered the “why’s” and “how’s” of one’s creative soul. Soon after beginning the certificate of Interior Design, I developed a thirst for the Arts, from Graphic Design and Typography to Visual Illustration and Photography . I wanted to immerse myself in all that encompassed Design, and so, with an overwhelming curiosity of what else I could learn, I soon began and completed my Diploma of Interior Design. I look forward to creating beautifully diverse spaces in a world that is so beautifully diverse.

“With a continued thirst for knowledge and Design, inspiration never runs dry. ” - Amelia Morrison 3

CAMDEN ORA Furniture Manufacturer Head Office 2088 Yukon Street, Vancouver BC Proposed Development

A&B CREATIVE STUDIOS Design Principals: Amelia Morrison Basia Opiol

CONCEPT Inspired by the aerial views of vast tulip fields planted along the outskirts of Amsterdam, Camden Ora approaches its Vancouver office by visually representing new growth through the means of concentrated colour blocking, while incorporating key Elements and Principles of Design. Modern Dutch influences of sleek woods and bold concentrated colors provide a fresh interpretation of 60’s mod, while the uniform and lineal division of tulip beds are represented in the symmetrical use of line and repetition. Clusters of vibrant blossoms transition to the use of vivid patterns and saturated tiles while reinforcing continuity of colour within the space. By incorporating said contrasting elements, a prismatic perspective was achieved within Vancouver’s urban setting.

A&B CREATIVE STUDIOS Design Principals: Amelia Morrison Basia Opiol In keeping up with today’s technological demands, a designer must be able to interpret their vision via Digital Graphic Presentation. The transition from hard copy to digital format is extremely important, as it provides another platform to present professional quality graphics that are easily accessible. The materials and furniture pieces selected for this project have been formatted using AutoCAD, AutoCAD 3D, Photoshop and Publisher. 9

SPROUT BIOMIMICRY EDUCATION CENTRE 3548 Piikea Avenue, Kihei, Maui, Hawaii Proposed Development

AMARIE DESIGNS Design Principal: Amelia Morrison Client: Green Solutions LLP Site Location: Kihei, Maui, Hawaii

CONCEPT Inspired by the deconstruction of a mushroom and its fluid parallel lines, Sprout approaches its Maui location by visually representing new growth through the means of fungi-infused building blocks, materials and sustainable cultivation practices. Long-established waste materials such as sawdust, straw and wood will provide a fresh re-interpretation of what is to be conventional, mimicking the organic matter from which mushrooms feed from. The layered division of a mushroom cap provides an agricultural element used as a ceiling-to-wall built-in feature, while the irregularity and lineal division of a mushroom’s mycelial roots are represented in the asymmetrical use of line and repetition. Bright and bold colors of different species of mushrooms will separate the adjoining spaces of the centre, with a central stage that will provide as a gathering place, much like the central system of a fungi. By incorporating said contrasting elements within the space, an agricultural expansion of sustainable practices will both benefit the community of Maui and redefine the nature of “waste”. Commercial design has revolutionized the way we think as designers, whether it be by manipulating materials in a way that goes against what nature or society has intended, or perhaps by defying gravity. This idea, of deconstructing a mushroom and re-manipulating it to satisfy the eager learning minds of children of all ages, was successful in transforming concept into reality. The materials and furniture pieces selected for this project have been formatted using AutoCAD, AutoCAD 3D, Photoshop and Publisher. 17

ESOTERIC RESTAURANT 100 Alexander Street Vancouver, BC Proposed Development

AMARIE DESIGNS Design Principal: Amelia Morrison

CONCEPT Inspired by the art of clairvoyance and its ability to produce a second sight, or inner eye, Esoteric approaches its inner paranormal through translucency and transparency, interpreting a fortune teller’s ritualistic expression of crystal-gazing. Elements of stone, water, mirror and glass are deeply favored while representing the mysticism of foretold prophecies through the most desirable form of divination. Use of strong geometric pattern and streamlined symmetry juxtaposed with visions of soft luminosity channel the subconscious, creating visual temptation via unity, variety and contrast. Reflective metals, rich fabrics and deeply saturated jewel-tones are essential in heightening the perception of clarity via the reinterpretation of a private reading. By incorporating said contrasting elements, a cryptic and otherworldly perspective will be achieved within Vancouver’s historical setting of Gastown. Photograph: Amelia Morrison

BUILT MODEL| PRESENTATION By creating a 3D visual representation of the restaurant space, I was able to visually assess clearances and proximities while adhering to the rules of human dimension and scale. Visualization of scale and proportion is a necessary skill I have come to appreciate as it immediately transforms any space into good design.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN| BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT: To design a floor plan and build a 2-level residential model home according to the building standards of Canada, replicating proper building methods.

Design Principals: Amelia Morrison Jessica Myroon Residential design is a passion of mine, as it provides endless opportunities to be creative, exercising minimal restraint in order to maximize use of space. As I wanted this project to mimic the aesthetics of a real home, I had windows cut from plexiglass using CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. 27
