Trends & Forecasting Toolkit In Week 4 we were recapped on the types of trends; megatrends, macro trends & micro trends and what we needed to fulfil to make sure our presentation was completely accurate. We learnt that we needed to research and involve with: ● ● ● ● ●

Innovation Professionals Societies Market research Academic journals

In order to understand a trend we must realise: ● ● ● ● ● -

Who started it? Professional, eg. Designers, writers Amateurs – typically youthful subculture What should it be called? New austerity Athleisure Bleisure The optimized self Where it came from? Can be a real notional, psychological place where innovators gather According to Matthews & Wacker, this happens on the edge or fringe of society Cities are hotspots for innovation and emerging trends – it is important to monitor closely. Why it is emerging now? Can be complex to define Mega and micro trends impact here Ongoing and sometimes fragmentary research Can be marginalized at first, but gathers momentum to affect how we think and engage with the world around us When was it first noted? Innovation is constant and ongoing, but a points in time there is more., eg Renaissance, Age of Enlightenment, Modernism, or even now Strategic and serendipitous encounters with innovators sharing ideas between cultural/scientific/books/letters to allow an idea to develop

Potential Impact of Fashion Trends ●

People will have a lower disposable income, they will not be spending money on leisurely activities such as shopping and may buy second hand clothes in order to save money.

Bitcoin inflation UK inflation - is at the highest since 2011 jumps to 2.9%

Soaring to $5000, bitcoin currency is at the highest it has even been. People that have shares in bitcoin will have a high disposable income ensuring that they can spend their money on luxury end brands.

‘Me Too’ campaign women speaking out about issues. Uniting together through common affairs.

Women may begin power dressing in order to create an even more professional portrayal of the important messages they are presenting.

Technological

Accessories such as watches, bracelets and glasses are becoming ‘smart’ often driven through companies such as Apple and Samsung.

These devices can act as your smart phone, enabling all notifications from your smartphone (even phone calls) to go to this tiny gadget. It’s much more portable and can track fitness.

Environmental

Global warming California fires

Many houses burnt down - meaning they may need to purchase new clothes. These will most likely be second hand clothes as the victims will be wanting to spend on new housing.

Legal

The world wants to take Harvey Weinstein to court over many sexual harassment/assault claims

Women uniting together power dressing.
