Preface The actual story of Peacehaven begins in 1916. The story for me began a little later in January 2010. Instead of merely passing through this suburb of Brighton, one day I decided to stop. Armed with a camera I began to record my encounters with the town’s neat rows of bungalows and quiet, quite treeless streets. Ten months later a few photos has evolved into an installation about the town, its history and most importantly its people. The installation, ‘Peacehaven in III Parts’, is my own re-representation of this town’s fascinating and unique story. Portraits of residents taken during the exhibition within the installation space will contribute to the project and become part of a living archive.

Ah the views! Ah the views! Peacehaven was wide open. Peacehaven was wide open. This house is where everyone in my family started from, this was the heart. When we first drove along the cliff tops, the South Coast Road I thought wow...

I am a bit squeamish about me only remembering the Dell being just a place to drink cider underage.
But then it was rather hidden away, like a den and a bit of a strange place to put a park, which is why we could socialise there in the summer months.

I moved to Peacehaven in 1988. Many of its homes were in need of improvement and general renovation.
Over the next 15 years I purchased and renovated 12 properties, culminating in my final renovation here in Downs Walk. I like to move on when I have done them up. I’ve been in this one four years now and have become I enjoyed some 8 very comfortable years here but it is time for me to take on another challenge, quite comfortable here. Nevertheless, it’s still for sale and I shall move on to another place, with mother most likely.. a property that is suitable as a family home incorporating a full size annex facility.
This could be used (should the need arise) by my mother – Ian Buchanan

I don’t have any old photographs, documenting the past. An entire box of my family history in photographs was mistakenly thrown away in a move

so I followed.
I was a teacher when I was in Ghana. I moved to the UK because my husband moved first,
My mum misses me a lot she wants me with her all the time.
The weather was terrible for me to begin with but I am adjusting. I am here now, with my son.
Quiet.
That’s how I know life to be. Maybe I made that connection with Peacehaven, and have found my peace...

Oh them Doodlebugs. We used to hear them flying over all the time dropping their bombs in the fields out the back
Course, no one here knows about all of that
Reigna’s father he had a huge plot of land but that’s all been developed on now, they are building up instead of out! We’ve still got our views out here though.

The wind was blowing like mad, there was nothing growing when we moved here, I thought we’d made a mistake. It was hard work, the weather was quite something... We used to sit here with red wine and cheese watching the thunderstorms over in France! But the colours are amazing. I decorate the interior when I get inspired but it’s also about feeling settled. Tomatoes should be firm but ripe with calyx on – Peacehaven Horticultural Society
If you have not exhibited before you are probably not aware that the staging of your exhibit may go a long way towards winning.
All vegetables should be clean and fresh.
Good quality, combined with a size suitable for the table is important.
The stems of root vegetables such as beetroot, carrots... should be cut approx 75 cms long.
Onions: should be well ripened and firm with a thin neck.
