RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE STAFF DC is a city of well-known spots and hidden gems. A few favorites from several Studio staff members:

ADRIEN-ALICE HANSEL Literary Director: Slipstream: Brooklyn prices, with ambiance, exposed industrial elements, and unparalleled coffee craft to match. The monuments at sunset/just after dark: Marble + sunset is only marginally more gorgeous than marble + the lights at night.

AMY HORAN Marketing & Publicty Supervisor: Rice: The best pad thai in town. Menomale: It’s way over in Brookland but it’s the best pizza in the district.

ANDERSON WELLS Education Manager: Stoney’s: If you’re into shortening your life span, try the Super Grilled Cheeseburger. Zengo: $35 Bottomless brunch. Food and drink. Asian fusion breakfast foods. Every time I go I have such a good time I cry.

DEB THOMAS Properties Director: ThaiTanic has the best chicken lemongrass in the city.

JOSHUA GLENN DECKER Facilities and Event Management Apprentice: Potter’s House in Adams Morgan: Delightful bookstore/coffee shop (with lots of vegan & vegetarian friendly dishes), with an extensive and diverse book collection that focuses on international issues, down to local, DC happenings. Hip City Veg: A bit of a trek towards the Convention Center & Chinatown, but it’s a vegan ‘fast food’ joint. (P.S. Get the Philly “Cheesesteak”).

LAUREN HALVORSEN Associate Literary Director: The Phillips Collection: There’s an admission fee, but it’s worth it to see a wide-ranging collection on display in very intimate spaces. Kramerbooks: Bookstore open until 1AM on weekdays, 3AM on weekends. The café/bar is A+. Dangerously Delicious Pies on H Street. Once you’re in the area, get the goat cheese and honey bagels at Bullfrog Bagels, mussels at Granville Moore’s, and fancy coffee at Maketto.

MARY GRACE SHORT Manager of Institutional Advancement: Coffee: Check out La Colombe (in Shaw); Big Bear Cafe (Bloomingdale); The Wydown (by U St). Union Market (indoor market, mostly food vendors, worth the trek); Dumbarton Oaks (beautiful gardens in Georgetown, $8 entrance fee, but the gardens are seriously gorgeous and seemingly endless).

MERIDITH BURKUS Managing Director: Favorite Monument: The Barbie Pond on Q Street Best food/ drink: Hank’s Oyster Bar, Sette Osteria, Annie’s Steakhouse, Sotto

MATT TORNEY Associate Artistic Director: Duke’s Grocery: Killer burger. Also does a mean ‘English breakfast’. Showtime Bar: For a real treat go on Sunday night for see their house band ‘Granny and the Boys’. An 80 year old Granny funking it up on keyboards with some lads on drums and guitar. Definitely a unique DC experience. Old Ebbits Grill: If your dad comes to visit, take him to Old Ebbits for a Club Sandwich and a craft beer. Open since the Civil War, this is a dark wood DC institution with some fancy murals and actual gas light fixtures.

RACHAEL WILKINSON Senior Digital Marketing Manager: The Society of Cinncinnati - Larz Anderson House: Part art museum, part maintained historical mansion, part secret society club house (really). It’s free and a must-see. Mason & Rook’s outdoor patio: Yes, they’re our hotel partner, but also have you had the fries with powdered bacon fat? The cozy outdoor patio has fire pits and an expanding roof for year-round all-weather enjoyment. Baan Thai: Serves authentic Northern Thai cuisine. Personal favorite is the garlic rice with fried chicken, curries or soups (aka khao pad grà-tiiam gài), but it is hard to go wrong with their curries or soups - especially the tom yum. The chef is very particular about serving food her way and will not honor any requests or substitutions.

RAVENN MCDOWELL Education and Operations Associate: The Renwick Gallery: As one of the Smithsonian Institute’s best kept secrets, Renwick is filled with peculiar yet incredibly refreshing works of art.

ARTISTS WITH CHILDREN Local Playgrounds: Stead Park: (P St between 16th and 17th NW) Good climbing structures for kids 5-7, a little-kids’ side, along with a splashing fountain (Memorial Day Labor Day). Harrison Playground: (V Street between 14th and 13th NW) Colloquially known as The Music Playground, there’s a water-spouting clarinet and French horn (Memorial Day - Labor Day) and a fun climbing structure loosely based on the design of a piano. Bit of a hike from artist housing, but perfect for early weekend mornings with kids before rehearsal/tech. Smithsonian Museums: They are free. There are almost always places to run. Depending on your kid’s age, you’ll gravitate towards one or another.
