3 —Intro

I am a creative and enthusiastic BA Product Design Honours graduate from Nottingham Trent University looking for a full-time Kitchen design role in which I can apply the invaluable skills I have learnt from my education and experience. I have a passion for enhancing spaces within the home to create high-end and desirable environments. Daily use of CAD programmes in my current position means I have been able to transform images and specifications from clients into bespoke furniture. I also have experience with Adobe CC, to create concepts and presentation boards, strong verbal and written communication skills, am organised and meticulous about my work. After moving to London to pursue my design career I have gained further insight into the high standard of work that is essential when producing and presenting drawings to clients.

Modus Showroom - Exterior sign

Modular steel frame chair display for Showroom A main aspect of Modus’ values that I really appreciated was their attitude towards producing sustainable, carbon-neutral products and doing as much as they can to protect the environment around them.

Design and Marketing Intern —

Placement year at Modus FurnitureExperience

My placement year was 12 months long, working as an intern at a local furniture manufacturer, Modus Furniture in Somerset. Throughout the duration of my placement year I was lucky enough to experience a wide range of tasks that I found invaluable towards my progression as a designer. My experience highlighted the importance of efficiency, professionalism and creativity within the design industry in order to produce high quality, consumer-driven products.

1 modusfurniture.co.uk Price List 2020 Other work I was involved in throughout the year included creating new exterior signs for the showroom along with a modular chair display rack. I also was tasked with producing 3D CAD models, bespoke technical drawings and CNC drawings.

Experience

Using InDesign and Illustrator I also created assembly instructions for each collection, created space plans for future showroom spaces / design fair exhibitions and my most important task was to produce the 2020 price list, a catalogue of all products and their varying specifications alongside finishes and prices. This required me to collate all product information from various departments.

As I worked in both the Design and Marketing departments I got to see the whole design process including initial sketches from designers, such as Sir Kenneth Grange, through to their product launches involving photoshoots, social media planning and producing product specifications. These can be seen on the Modus Furniture website for each product under ‘product sheet’

million£300 is spent annually on stress-related absence in the NHS (this figure is prior to the pandemic)

1Project Pebble - Exhibited at The Lost Graduation Show, Salone del Mobile, Milan — Research

45% of 996 healthcare staff reported experiencing depression, anxiety, stress, burn-out or other mental health conditions relating to or made worse by the Covid-19 outbreak

Key research findings — From

49% of 178 senior doctors were at risk of burnout due to workload and stress pre-pandemic secondary research

45% of 1000 doctors and nurses surveyed across the UK reported experiencing depression, anxiety, stress, burnout or other mental health conditions relating to or made worse by the outbreak.

30% of sickness absence in the NHS was related to work stress. This equates to a cost of £300-400 million annually to the NHS. The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in hospital staff working even longer hours in much more stressful conditions than usual. They have had less time to take a few minutes for themselves which is vital in order for them to continue to perform to the high standards required working with sick patients. Stress and overwork can reduce the quality of care staff can deliver and potentially impact on patient safety. Covid-19 has caused negative effects on staff mental health and wellbeing

9 Refined brief & Development — Design a product, service or system that helps to minimise mental health and wellbeing issues in healthcare workers Pebble

—Solution Pebble - Healthcare wellbeing watch1Project Pebble aims to enhance the wellbeing of healthcare workers, advising the user to take frequent breaks to relax, refresh and recharge. Long hours and stressful environments mean healthcare staff are at risk of burning out due to anxiety, depression, insomnia and stress. Pebble’s break reminders, hydration prompts, and wellbeing insights improve health and safety for both staff and patients. Design Challenge: Work - User lives with partner. They work from home and need a space that feels like a workplace.

Customisation: There have been many benefits seen from offering customisable products . They seem to be able to generate more sales as customer loyalty is increased which, in turn, creates a larger profit margin.

Environmental: Increasing awareness of the environmental impacts of products is having an effect on consumers purchases. They are buying more sustainably made products where companies have perhaps have considered CO2 consumption and the sourcing of their materials. This has seen the introduction of recycled plastics in clothing and furniture, especially in the use of Terazzo.

2Project Ripple - Commended by PearsonLloyd Design Studio, London — Brief Trend evaluation —

You must also select a specific design challenge and develop an innovative product / solution in response to this need.

Modular: Having the ability to adapt a space, changing an environment within the home allows consumers to alter their furniture to their liking. It also means a customer is more likely to repurchase from the brand in the future.

To design a living space / products for the young, mobile urban dweller of the 21st century. Your living space is limited to 15 sq meters and must incorporate all of the basic housing products

3Project Tea Tips & LuYu Collection — Research One-third of food that is globally produced is disposed of every year, equating to 1.3 billion tonnes annually. When food decomposes in landfill it releases methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming As tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world (after water) and is usually disposed of incorrectly due to the plastic particles found in the tea bag, it also plays a part in this contamination of landfill, producing greenhouse gases. By increasing the consumption of loose leaf tea instead of tea bags would minimise the effects of micro-plastics in food waste and greenhouse gasses being produced. Aged 30-50 (Gen X) / Working professionals / Disposable income / Environmentally aware and trying to make a difference / Health conscious / Enjoys socialising and entertaining / Occasionally works from home Target consumer83%of 100 people surveyed said they would start using loose leaf tea if it was made easier to use Tea bags contain micro-plastics which contaminate food waste causing greenhouse gases when disposed of incorrectly Loose leaf benefits: - Mental clarity - Lower cholesterol - High in antioxidants - Prevents cardiovascular disease - Manages weight and metabolism

Inspiration Innovative, ‘experimental’ type designs have encouraged coffee consumers to purchase products like these seen below, becoming at-home barista’s. The product interaction appears to be a more desirable way to enjoy their preferred beverage. This is an area that can be adopted into the tea consumer market.

Refined brief — Design a product / service for the kitchen environment that encourages tea consumers to use loose leaf tea in order to reduce that amount of tea bags containing plastics being discarded into landfill.

Use inspiration from the Japanese and Chines tea cultures within the deisgn

3Project Final design — Tea Tips app The tea tips app promotes using loose leaf tea over tea bags, highlights the health and sustainability benefits of using loose leaf tea. It also provides a place for consumers to purchase a variety of tea blends

CollectionLuYu&TipsTea21

The LuYu Collection is inspired by the traditional tea drinking methods used in Japan and China. It is designed to enhance the loose leaf tea-making process, making it easier to reuse and discard the leaves

Plasma cutting

Laser cutting

There are no restrictions on type of product you produce however awareness of target and route to market must be considered.

Lasers can cut through all plastic, glass, ceramic, wood, rubber and lots of metals. It is more accurate and efficient than water or plasma cutting.

Contemporary lighting using sheet metal manufacturing Explore the commercial home-ware market, developing a single or range of products specifically for sheet material manufacturing such as laser, water and plasma cutting.

Water cutting

Best for cutting thinner stainless steel, titanium, aluminium, tool steel, ceramics, granite, armour plate and materials that are sensitive to high temperatures

Also good for cutting metals such as stainless steel, aluminium and copper, of varying thicknesses
