Water and Mountain from Gaudi | Summer 2013

RE- FAÇADE CASA MILA | BARCELONA, SPAIN [1/4]

Instructor: Professor Amber Bartosh Collaboration: Rene Duchesne

For Antoni Gaudi, nature was a constant source of inspiration, and Casa Mila is no exception. His use of nature’s shapes is by no means superficial, and was often structurally effective. Its particularly impressive how technology (parametric design, in particular) has made it easier to recreate Gaudi’s notion of what’s organic with more precision. In this case, it is taken to an extreme. A parasitic piece that grows out of the original building, breaking out of its urban restraints, to the extent of uselessness. In its adoption of nature, it becomes unnatural, in relationship to its context, a shell unfit to host life, precisely because of its desire to resemble nature.

Resilience to inevitable flood | Fall 2014

WATERFRONT RESIDENCE | BROOKLYN, NY [1/6]

Instructor: JIill Leckner | SLAB Architecture PLLC

Premise on the project: As the analysis shows, the site is under the situation of inevitable flood in decades. So is the demand of residence in this area, and New York City. Hereby, it is obvious to demonstrate the dilemma in this design is to consolidate the intensity and infliction of residence stress and residence living protocol. On this will-be-flood land, no matter residence, museum annex and community commerce, it will be under the priority consideration of symbiosis condition with water surrounded. Mangrove biological traits illustrate the power of reduction of storm wave energy or tsunami flow, natural filter for urban and agriculture run-off, prop roots trap sediments and provide habitat and detritus forms basis to coast food web.

Historical Renovation | Spring 2014

CREEKWALK BOUTIQUE HOTEL | SYRACUSE, NY [1/6]

Instructor: Professor Arthur McdDonald Collaboration: Westly Ratcliff

[Enclosure Form] The hotel is situated on a site with an intricate condition. It is encircled by a major road from north, five story apartment building from the east and the Onondaga Creek from the west. [Material Assembly] The terracotta chosen for the facade is derived from its historic red brick building situation as a modern interpretation on the historic brick. [Visual and Thermal Performance] Windows oriented towards the South-West take advantage of the views and the southern light and skylights capture light and direct it downward. [Spatial Experience] The hotel overall form serves as a billboard as well as a visual connection to its environment.

Urban Adaption | Fall 2013

PENN STATION RENOVATION | NEW YORK, NY [1/4]

Instructor: Professor Anda French

The approaching of expiration of arena permit for Madison Square Garden, with Penn Station on top of, has urged the necessity to redesign this block along with the whole Hudson Yard development. The mission of this competition is to engage the broader public to insist a new Penn Station is an imperative infrastructure and livability issue for commuters and New Yorkers alike with the sponsorship of MoMA and NYC-DPR With the same understanding, new Penn Station block would continue the contribute to economic growth and transportation improvement, prolong the visionary affect about MSG and Penn Station. This is an opportunity to re-imagine and redevelop Penn Station as a world-class transportation destination.

PENN STATION RENOVATION | NEW YORK, NY [2/4]

Instructor: Professor Anda French

Optimum Orientation Location: NYC-Central parks (S), New York-USA Orientation based on average daily incident radiation on a vertical surface Weather Tool

The dataset collects the pedestrian flow for the spots in various corners of surrounding blocks of Penn Station. AM, Mid day, PM, Peak hours. The fluctuation of the date emphasizes these spots capable of “absorbing people to come, which results in the congestion. The electric filed lines are showing the correspondence among each spot, in which I would alter the current situation to improve the pedestrian problem

Sustainable Residence | 2011-2012 | Archiland International Full-time Intern

Instructor: Juergen Engelhardt Collaboration: Yating Pan

CITY GATEWAY | CHANGSHA, CHINA [1/7]

Changsha City Gateway, Wuguang residential complex, in Changsha, China, is intended to connect the modern living condition with well-considered sustainable design and accommodate the commerce and community amenity within walkable radius. Study about wind, sun direction and green facilities are deeply embedded in the process of schematic design and detail design. These two parts are what I was responsible during the time taking internship at Archiland International.

The sloping elevation, coursed by the offset in plan, gives better sun. Light conditions for the apartments and the public areas. Better wind circulation within the plan. And longer views from within the apartments.

Plug-in City | Spring 2013

FUN PALACE [1/1]

Instructor: Professor Julie Larsen

Taking the initiative from Fun Palace by Cedric Price in 1962, which has widely understood as the resource of Centre Georges Pompidou by Renzo Pianzo and Richard Rogers, further develops and depicts this utopia city with irresolvable situation assembled by self-constructed modules. Unfolding the unit of Magic Cube City Standard module for various functions can be seen in this shape, but for different scale. Normally one balcony, four directions to circulate within the whole complex and one large total space are composed of the whole unit of Magic Cube.

Sublimity while travel |Spring 2013

FAKE TOURISM/ MICROSCOPIC VERSION [1/1]

Instructor: Professor Julie Larsen

The sublimity result from death, sickness and oldness has been historically established by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and others, and now with the comforting living condition around, this hypothetical tourism agency would organize one trip routine for people who are interested into this kind of destinations with great danger to get close by, like Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, Bermuda Triangle.

Sublimity while travel | Spring 2013

FAKE TOURISM | KABWE, ZAMBIA [1/1]

Instructor: Professor Julie Larsen Collaboration: Rene Duchesne

Here in Kabwe, Africa, historically it was boomed by the discovery of large mount of lead and zinc deposit and then quickly shrink and abandon with certain basic living facility available behind after 90 years of mineral extraction. In this project, it is meant to adapt the form of flower-shaped structure inserted in this area, sealing the mines as well as providing a sensorially rich environment, The roofs of these flower-like structures will also serve to collect rainwater that will be redirected to buried storage tanks. Since precipitation in Kabwe reaches an average of 36 inches per year, this could contribute to the creation of new, clean water sources. But these roofs can also host underneath a market, treatment facilities, and lead poisoning testing centers. The center of these “flowers can host a series of underground chambers that can provide new sensorial experiences to its visitors.
