America SCORES, a national non-profit, serves over 11,500 children at over 250 public and charter schools in 13 major cities. America SCORES’ mission is to inspire urban children to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world. We achieve this mission through daily after-school programs that combine soccer, poetry and community service. This holistic, team-based approach works. America SCORES students, 85% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch, improve academically, increase physical fitness, and have a greater sense of confidence and belonging.

A MESSAGE FROM
Ben
SCORES has given tens of thousands of young people the opportunity to make their voices heard. Whether they are on the soccer pitch, in a classroom, on a stage, or in the community, our poet-athletes discover the power their actions and words can have toward making a positive impact, giving them a platform for success in school and in life. SCORES has never been more important than it is today. In this digital age, too few kids can relate to people without a screen, work cohesively as part of a team, or speak in front of audiences without fear or hesitation. Few choose to go outside to play, looking instead to digital devices and video games for entertainment. SCORES kids are different. SCORES teaches kids how to express themselves both in writing and verbally. SCORES keeps kids healthy and engaged in school, and instills the values of teamwork, leadership, and commitment. Kids in SCORES form lasting friendships and mentorships, and find success in a variety of ways. Fiscal year 2017 was a banner year for America
to meet the needs of their communities and better leverage increasingly locally-focused grant dollars
while further strengthening both the power of affiliate connections and America SCORES’ influence across North America. Whether it is expanding down to Kindergarten - 2nd Grade or increasing engagement across the network with ‘alumni’ now in high school and beyond, our network is committed to ensuring that the kids in America SCORES will be the next generation of leaders. As always, our work would not be possible without the leadership of coaches, school principals, parents, volunteers, funders, staff, and boards across the country and in Vancouver. Thank you for joining us in our vision to giving more and more kids from low-income neighborhoods a team and the opportunity to develop self-confidence and express themselves freely. We couldn’t do it without you.

Staff also had the chance to discuss inclusion and immigration with Andy Fernandez, director of RISERS, after a screening of the film, which focuses on America’s undocumented immigrant youth. Of course, SCORESCon 2017 was not confined to the classroom. Small-sided soccer games gave SCORES staff the chance to show others their skills on the field. On the last day, after having lunch at the DC SCORES office, a trip to the Newseum and a round of footgolf gave staff the opportunity to further stretch their legs.

The Boston SCORES high school program has been around for almost four years. In that time, the program has grown from 15 freshmen boys from East Boston practicing informally, to over 100 student-athletes from all over the city playing competitively on six different teams. In addition to representing Boston SCORES on soccer fields all over eastern Massachusetts, our high school student-athletes also participate in a wide range of off-the-field activities, such as college visits, professional development workshops, and community service projects. Staff at Boston SCORES are especially proud of the under-19 boys team, most of whom are playing in their third season with SCORES, and who won their division in Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) last spring. The Boston SCORES high school teams play competitively in BAYS through a partnership with South End Soccer.

Having won the BAYS division, they were awarded a berth in the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC). The team eventually won the tournament after beating Topsfield on penalties. Outside of their efforts on the field, the under 19 South End Soccer/Boston SCORES boys team also did some amazing work in their communities. They volunteered at the Greater Boston Food Bank, spent a day at Fidelity Investments for one-on-one success coaching sessions, visited Brandeis University and Northeastern University, refereed games for the Boston SCORES elementary and middle school leagues, and participated in a series of One Hen-inspired financial literacy workshops.
Commitment PROFILE
Coach Deborah VANCOUVER
Deborah Butowski moved to British Columbia in 1996 and found her passion. She dedicated her career to working with children and families of Edmonds Community School in Burnaby, British Columbia. Her commitment and love for the community is evident. Deborah admits, however, that although she finds her work fun and rewarding and the families are usually gracious, there are challenges. Deborah recognized the need for a Canada SCORES program at Edmonds Community School. “The Canada SCORES program gives all kids the opportunity to achieve success, gain self-esteem, feel happiness and make friends,” says Deborah. She challenged herself and began coaching four years ago. Today, many kids relate to her and some even confide in her. Each and every day Deborah is excited to see them grow. Some poet-athletes have kept in touch with Deborah. These students acknowledge how invaluable

Nowadays you need to talk smart, use their language and match their level. She also knows that it is also important to praise kids and show them encouragement.

BOARD PROFILE
Brendan Moylan Sports Endeavors, Inc.
Brendan Moylan was not the most coveted Moylan for the America SCORES National Board of Directors. In 2004, then Executive Director Paul Caccamo was actually more interested in Brendan’s brother Mike, who had attended Georgetown with Caccamo. Paul asked Mike if he would be interested in joining the board. Mike was honored, but immediately volunteered Brendan to serve, and what a great decision it was for America SCORES. Brendan has spent his working life in retail, focused primarily on soccer but also lacrosse and rugby. He is the Chief Operations Officer at Sports Endeavors Inc., the largest soccer, lacrosse and rugby retailer in the world. Early in the company’s life, the Moylans decided to do good with the Sports Endeavors brand. In 1989, recognizing a need in the worldwide soccer community, they started the Passback Program to channel old but usable soccer equipment to those without any. The U.S. Soccer Foundation has since taken over control of the program, and hundreds of thousands of items have been shipped to organizations in the U.S. and around the world thanks to their idea. Being on the America SCORES National Board, Brendan does not often get to see the action on the field, so the Poetry Slam! was always an event that he looked forward to. “It is the energy from the event that makes it so special,” Brendan said. “There is a joy that the National Poetry SLAM! creates for everyone who attends which made it an annual highpoint for me.”
“The America SCORES program works so I feel it is my responsibility to provide access to it for as many children as possible.” Brendan Moylan National Board Treasurer

Longtime America SCORES supporter Volkswagen Group of America stepped up their support to help us truly harness the power of our network through the expansion of SCORESCon. This year’s conference, the largest ever, included development, communications, and administrative staff for the first time, allowing affiliates to share best practices for everything from corporate fundraising to social media and online giving days. Thanks to VWGoA, staff from cities across the U.S. and Canada convened in Washington, D.C. to improve the programming we deliver to our poet-athletes and to ensure that we have the resources to grow for many years to come.
