Eid retains its joy, although traditions have changed Waking up to the smell of traditional Eid biscuits being baked and the call to prayer and the excitement of wearing new clothes for Eid are memories many cherish and are still keen to relive with their families during the celebrations. On Eid, the 6am Eid prayers usually mark the beginning of the three-day celebrations after 30 days of fasting. Eid rituals and traditions often include serving traditional sweets, biscuits and desserts, wearing new clothes, and gathering with family and friends to share the joy. Home visits, barbeques and the tradition of giving Eid money known as ‘Eidiya’ to children are also popular customs practised by many cultures. Amily, who attends the American University of Sharjah, said she is excited to be going home to Kuwait to celebrate Eid with her family, relatives and friends. Published on: Section: Page:

Opportunities Abound for Mars Probe Launch The UAE's space programme could inspire innovation and spur further diversification of the country's economy. A mission to Mars would promote a focus on making breakthroughs in the development of new technologies, which could be patented and sold to foreign space agencies. It could also inspire thousands of Emiratis to pursue careers in the space industry, opening the door to new research bodies and university courses in aerospace engineering. Robert Zubrin, the president of the Mars Society, said the government was encouraging Emiratis to "become a pioneer and an explorer of newworlds". The UAE has invested Dh20 billion in space technology, through the Emirates Institute for Advanced Science and Technology in Dubai, and Al Yah Satellite and Al Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications in Abu Dhabi. Strata, a Mubadala Aerospace subsidiary in Abu Dhabi, provides parts for global aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus. There's a lot of demand from initiatives like the UAE Space Agency, Eiast, YahSat and Thuraya, as well as non-space programmes like Strata, Emirates Nuclear and DEWA. Published on: Section: Page:

Staff crisis hits higher education data centre A nationwide project to collect crucial data about higher education has stalled after three of its four staff left. Education researchers and policy makers have voiced their dismay over the staffing problems affecting the Centre for Higher Education Data and Statistics. Education professionals say they now have to find the information themselves, which is not the best use of their time. Dr Fatima Badry of the American University of Sharjah said: "As a researcher on education policy and the effectiveness of reforms in higher education I have spent an enormous amount of time searching websites of each university to get basic information on such issues as enrolment numbers, percentages of nationals in each institution by college or major, information about faculty and top administration backgrounds, expenditure on research, and so on. You can be punished for spreading rumours' The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority has said that Mars, Snickers and Galaxy Milk drinks are all non-toxic and safe. The statement was made by the regulatory authority in response to rumours circulating on the social media calling the products harmful to health. Rumours like these begin as a small wisp of smoke from an irresponsible source and soon turn into a fire as social media denizens fan the flames by forwarding the message without checking its veracity, says Fadi Aloul, head of computer engineering and cyber security at the American University of Sharjahm, cautioning UAE residents from the after-effects of the irresponsible spread of unverified messages. As compared to earlier times when we had 'snail mail' it is very easy for people to mass forward a message on Twitter, Facebook or other social media platforms without so much as giving it a thought. Innovative mobile app I'm a computer engineering senior at the American University of Sharjah. I was born in Qatar and have lived most of my life here. I'm now an intern at Microsoft Qatar and have been given a project in which I have to develop a mobile application that could benefit people. I have seen how Qatar was in 1991 and how it has been developing exponentially through the years, that makes me really motivated to try and be part of this development. That is how I have come up with the idea of "Musaada" a mobile application that allows people in Qatar to send requests to police, ambulance, towing services and the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning.
