Going by the book It’s amazing how random stories can be turned into a book. Alia Al Hazami is the epitome of an aspiring author. At the age of 18, she published her first novel, Alatash. The idea was inspired by a conversation with a relative. “I used 5 per cent of what the person told me. The rest was my imagination,” says the recent graduate of Al Ma’arifa School, Sharjah. Alatash means “wherever I go, I want to see you”. The book revolves around the tragic story of an African woman and how her life experiences shaped her into the person she is today. The book covers many angles of life -- from struggles to forced marriage and eventually divorce. I’d like to major in international studies and minor in English literature. I’m looking forward to starting my university life at the American University of Sharjah. Published on: Page:

Polygamous marriages give women bad feelings Women in polygamous marriages often suffer from negative emotions, a new study has found. Experts have said such feelings were expected and that the responsibility of relieving those emotions lay with husbands who had to make the right decision when remarrying. Dr Rana Raddawi, associate professor in the department of English at the American University of Sharjah, is to publish a research paper examining how women in polygamous marriages feel. Her survey of 100 Arab women found that many of them experienced feelings of neglect and jealousy. She said she was inspired to conduct the study because of family members who are in polygamous marriages. Published on: Section: Page:

Memories of fatal car crash haunt parents On most nights, a father finds his wife in the room of their late son, Yazan, holding his clothes to her chest and weeping — for her he exists in every one of his things. Lebanese Mohammad Al Ameen, 19, who went to the American University of Sharjah, as well as three best friends who graduated from Al Dawha School in Sharjah — American Yazan Nasser, Palestinian Izzeddin Al Battrwai, 16, Jordanian Abdullah Salah, 18 — were killed. They would gather in our house and play PlayStation and goof about. Published on: Section: Page:
