Super six showcase Emirati superhero A group of female filmmakers their opinions within the environment of their home or society - are just some of the issues that our film tackles," says Soltani, who worked on the animation and writing in the film. Although it is lighthearted, 'Super Lochal' also touches on some serious subjects. Family pressure, societal expectations and unwanted harassment are just some of the topics that the film's antagonist helps women speak up against. The film was written, produced, directed and animated by six female filmmakers - Sarah Alagroobi, Omnia El Afifi, Majida Al Safadi, Mahya Soltani, Maram Ashour and Sarah Adel, all 24 to 26 years old. The women met while studying film at the College of Architecture, Art and Design at American University of Sharjah. The six directors all contributed to the project in their own ways, resulting in a five-minute dark comedy that combines animation, narrative film and still imagery. Super Lochal' will screen as part of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival on Sunday, October 26 at 9pm and Wednesday, October 29 at 3pm at VOX Cinemas (Cinema 3) in Marina Mall. Published on: Page:

Educating girls is not enough As everyone knows by now, Malala Yousufzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Kailash Satyarthi, last week. While Malala was already famous for having been shot at by the Taliban two years ago for her campaign for girls' education, Satyarthi had been organising peaceful protests and demonstrations against the economic exploitation of children. The Nobel Committee duly highlighted the fact that a Hindu man and a young Muslim woman, an Indian and a Pakistani, were sharing the prize for "common struggle for education and against extremism". Nidhal Guessoum is a professor at the American University of Sharjah. Published on: Section: Page:

High education costs challnge UAE parents Parents in the UAE are highly ambitious when it comes to the education of their children — with a prestigious university degree being highly valued — experts at HSBC have revealed. HSBC’s report ‘The Value of Education: Springboard for success’ noted that with the increasing cost of higher education around the world, a vast majority (67 per cent) of parents in the country are not adequately prepared to fund the high aspirations they have for their children’s education. DSOA, Leading Destination of World's Technology Companies The Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA) is a free zone fully owned by the government of Dubai, and supports industries based on modern technologies. The authority thus provides companies with lands to build their regional headquarters and facilities, and now includes companies such as Porsche and Schneider Electric. It also considers the environment a central issue that has been given core consideration in all its projects and initiatives. In this context, DSOA has forged agreements with key partners such as the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE) and Enviroserve. As part of the agreement with DCCE, DSOA will play an active role in Dubai Carbon's Carbon Ambassador Programme, a national initiative by Dubai Carbon and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority. In 2010, DSO also signed an agreement with Enviroserve, a public-private partnership with the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water, for the effective disposal and recycling of electronic scrap collected from DSO premises. Moreover, DSOA has signed three memorandums of understanding (MoU) while visiting smart cities in the world, including one with Universidad PolitĂŠcnica de Madrid (UPM), to enhance technical and academic collaboration in the field of smart cities. By virtue of this MoU, a higher education programme has been established in the field of smart cities, and it will be offered by academics from leading universities in the world such as Oxford, Harvard, and London Business School.
